After releasing seven successful AIDS benefit compilations that focus on genres from dance to indie-rock to country, in 1996 the Red Hot Organization put out its first hip-hop record, America Is Dying Slowly (note the acronym). But with African Americans accounting for 60 percent of U.S. AIDS cases, and AIDS now the No. 1 cause of death for Americans 25 to 44, you'd think an album like this would have been produced sooner. Apparently, though, it took the AIDS-related death of rapper Eazy-E the year before to awaken the hip-hop community to the problem.Unlike past non-rap Red Hot projects, which were more about raising funds than increasing awareness, the conversational nature of rap allows it to address the issues directly without sounding awkward or preachy. While making us dance and laugh, Domino tells us to "Sport That Raincoat" and Biz Markie, Chubb Rock, and Prince Paul warn, "No Rubber, No Backstage Pass." But the messages sent are not always on the mark: there are bits of the usual conspiracy theories (Mobb Deep) and entirely too much finger-pointing at the "nasty hoes" (Sadat X, Fat Joe, and Diamond D.) and "no-good hoes" (Spice 1, Celly Cel, and Ant Banks). But the compilation also delivers sensitivity and subtlety from some unlikely places. Wu-Tang Clan's title track, for instance, limps along a simple two-chord piano loop that makes for some of the most melancholic hip-hop ever created. Adding to the various viewpoints offered here, Eightball and MJG offer "Listen to Me Now," a rap from the virus's perspective. It all seems appropriate; AIDS, after all, has long been the most ruthless and indiscriminate gangsta in town. --Roni Sarig ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Buy
My favorite tracks are "America" by Wu Tang, "The Hustle" by Dela soul, and "Hoes" with Sadat X and Fat Joe.These songs alone are worth the price of this album.I even liked the song by Common who i don't usually enjoy.Amaze your friends with these unheard Jewelz by Rappers at the top of the game.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good message and album
The only reason I give this album a four is because it has some great tracks that it seems no one has ever heard about.Personally I could do without the Wu-Tang and gansta stuff...but the tracks by Buckwild/OC, Oranized Konfusion, and Common are increible unknown tracks that everone has to check out.Plus the CD is for a good cauze. Peace,SV

I bought this CD thinking it would have a lot of pac on it but there was only one song of his. This CD is almost all Bay area rappers. There are A LOT of artists featured so if you are looking for any bay area rapper they are probably on the CD. I'd say the music falls in between underground and mainsteam. Tommy Boy has givin us what the DJ's have had availble for years, some rarities. On this collection you find hard to find songs like the promo only SHe Fe MC's by De LA Soul and ATCQ which shold have been put out on one of their great releases. Another rare song is the first song recorded by RZA aka Prince Rakeem, the song sounds corny but it is dope as well. Now you can see where the head of the WU Tang Clan has evolved from. The last stand out track is the remix of Jump Around done by Pete Rock which he puts his musical genius to work. I can't recommend this any higher to a hip hop fan or collector of music. PEACE ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Midwest Flava
COG is one of my my favorite rap groups. For them to be new and only have one album that's saying alot.COG consist of Goldiiz,Bad Seed and P Child. They coming straight from chi town wit that great Midwest flow and rappin over some very impressive beats. The albums full of street songs and some chillin trackz along wit it.This features Mack 10,Soultre,Mc Eiht,Baby from cash money,B.G and Juvenile aswell. It's a great album it should have gone platnium or Gold, but there was not much promotion.Mack 10 still did a good job wit this young group and he definetly found a winner here. So if you don't own this one pick this up next trip to the store.

4-0 out of 5 stars COG display some tight flows on their debut CD.
Despite what some people may say, Chilldrin Of Da Ghetto sound NOTHING like Bone Thugs & Harmony. In fact, if you didn't know who they were, you'd probably swear it was Crucial Conflict you're listening to. To me, the seven members in the two Chi-town groups have the same exact sounding voices. But what separates COG from being complete Crucial Conflict clones is the talented Goldiiz, who not only can flow but he also PRODUCED this entire album. Definitely some tight beats on here, and he also uses very little sampling, which is to his credit. It comes out sounding like a perfect blend of that West Coast, Hoo-Bangin feel and that MidWest, Chi-town feel. Standout trax on here are the first single "Luv At First Sight," which is not too sappy as the title might make it look, "It's Time To Roll" featuring Mack 10, "Better Days," "Mistake," and "Hoo-Bangin COG Style" featuring Mack 10 & MC Eiht. On "Lonely," Juvenile drops by for a lethargic, non interesting verse in which he sounds like he's congested, taking away from the overall nice feel the track has. The second single, "Wild Side," could easily be confused as a Crucial Conflict track, from the title to the flows. But again, it's Goldiiz work behind the boards which provides the distinction. Overall, this is a nice debut album, showcasing this group's high potential. A worthy buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Children Of The Ghetto
C.O.G could probably end up the best new artist of the year. Personaly the cd was tight know what I'm saying they kept that CHI-TOWN flow going on. You hear this cd you think of Do or Die & Conflict you buy it won't regret it. CHI-TOWN REPRESENTING. brewera566

5-0 out of 5 stars HOO-BANGIN
This CD is tight. Good production by Goldiiz. They have the same Midwestern flow as Bone Thugs and Crucial Conflict but are a lot better. I can't wait until part two comes out. GO GET THIS CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Production.
Go out and buy this album. The group kinda reminds you of bone thugs. Great production by goldiiz. Mack 10, Mc Eiht, B.G., and Juvenile are featured. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Celluloid is best for independent old school HipHop
Celluloid Records (thanks to Bill Laswell) stands for tunes like Grandmixer DST's "(The Bronx) The Home Of Hip Hop", Time Zone's "The Wildstyle", Fab Five Freddy & Bee Side's "Change The Beat" (sample: ahhhhhh...this stuff is really fresh), Futura 2000's (of Aerosol art fame) "Escapades Rap" (backed by The Clash) or Aerosol artist and Futura's companion Phase II's "The Roxy" (the legendary B-boy club). All these cuts are worth your hard-earned money for sure as this CD is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL and pure HISTORY. It's also part of early HipHop underground. Go ahead folks and do the maths of wayback. 5-0 out of 5 stars A tribute to Roger Troutman
Okay, this is the first of many tribute albums to come for the late great Roger Troutman. Roger still lives on in our hearts when you play this album. From California Love, to True Love, your neck will not want to stop snappin'. Big Robb is even on this album, and that's great. There is even some old classics like, EPMD's Chill, and Blackstreet's Booti call. You even get to here the old Jodici song What about us. I'm tellin' you if you want to remember Roger Troutman then get this excellent album. You won't be disappointed. I wasn't when I bought it and I plan to keep playin it until the disk needs to be replaced.

5-0 out of 5 stars confusing but interesting
for all zapp and roger fans, these contains artists who sampled mr. troutman over the years, they could have used new songs cause these songs are old, but still interesting the artists who sampled roger was innumerous, i wish we could have heard the unreleased cut with roger, bootsy, sly stone, and george clinton, man i wonder how that sound, also how come funkadelic did'nt contribute something especially, shirley murdock, and bootsy. but anyway still worth the money, rest in peace roger we still bouncing, the rappers are still sampling your music.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good selection of Zapp inspired vocoder tunes...
...what in the heck is a vocoder? It's that mouth tube that's hooked up to a guitar or synthesizer to give that robotic sound that Roger/Zapp were famous for. Some folks have listened to that sound for years and had no clue to what it was or what it was called...My first exposure to it was when Peter Frampton used it on his live album. Then Stevie Wonder used it on some of his lesser cuts in his masterpiece era. Zapp/Roger came about in the 80's. By the late 80's, rappers and DJ's were mixing Zapp/Roger to their repertoire. One of the first Zapp sampled tunes I noticed was EPMD's "You Gots To Chill". And a year or two afterwards came MC Breed's "Ain't No future in Your Fronting"...both have sampled "More Bounce To the Ounce" liberally. Years later H-town disguised Zapp's "It's Alright" pretty handily in "Knockin' the Boots". Those three jams are included here. One could also see how whoever put this together could be prompted to call this a tribute with the likes of Dre & 2 Pac's "California Love" and Jodeci's "How About Us" in the mix. A better tribute would be for various artists to redo some of Roger's tunes. Not that I'm complaining about this CD, though... ... Read more

Everyone and his cousin has done, or been the subject of, a remix record at this point, so it takes something special for one to stand out from the crowd. Old School Vs. New School qualifies--emphatically. A celebration of some of the Jive and Silvertone labels' best singles, it pits killer tracks from A Tribe Called Quest, Kool Moe Dee, Boogie Down Productions, Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, Whodini, and the Stone Roses against the talents of Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim), Doc Martin, Rabbit in the Moon, Aphrodite, and other well-known--and talented--remixers. With the exception of Hollis Monroe's take on R. Kelly's "Sex Me"--easily the weakest track on the album, both in its original and remixed form--all of the songs are somehow treated with respect and given a fresh life. Cook's take on A Tribe Called Quest's "I Left My Wallet in El Segundo" gives the track a tropical feel, the Bassbin Twins give their take on BDP's catalog in a tribute medley, and the two takes of the Stone Roses' classic "Fools Gold"--from Grooverider and Rabbit in the Moon--bring out two different sides of a deserving song. You'll want to dig out the originals again and listen to them side by side with the remixes. --Randy Silver ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dearly dissappointed...
After hearing a few tracks from the second volume I thought the first one would be even better... Yet I was extremely dissappointed when I heard the album... If you like old 80's hip-hop with boring, weak techno beats then this is the album you have been waiting for...

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Remix Compilation
I was looking for a breakbeat compilation and found this. A few tracks have some sweet breakbeats, but there's so much more funk that can't be contained by just one musical subgenre. These new school remixes have taken these already great tracks and transformed them. There are a couple tracks on the CD that don't quite slide with me, but the majority are awesome. Whodini vs The Freestylers, A Tribe Called Quest vs Aphrodite, and A Tribe Called Quest vs Norman Cook especially are otherwordly and deserve to be cranked up on everyone's stereo system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Studder scratch, studder scratch filling up the beats
Yummy scratch tracks laying down fat fast pistol oomph. If you funk the vibe, ya know that the skunk is tribe. A burning blend of aboriginal harmonies in accordance with section 12 of the Funk Nation Treaty. Fat Boy Slim brings pounds of carpet to the already cantonese tribe tune.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive mixes
Even though I'm getting sick of techno compilations, this one didn't disapoint. The remixes are fresh and original. All the Tribe remixes are incredible, especially the Aphrodite and Fat Boy Slim mixes. A great mix of house, break beat and trance versions of some classic music. But R Kelly? Why?

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS CD IS DOPE!!!! BUY IT!!!!
This is on of the best CD compilations to come out in a while. This brings back to the limelight two of my all time favorite groups, ATCQ and the Stone Roses. The first time I heard the mix of "Can I Kick It" it got me so movin I brought the house down, serious. BUY THIS CD!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD is a jewel for underground heads everywhere!!
I must say this is one of the best compalation album's I have ever heard. I love hiphop/rap music, and have been listening to it since '96 and love all sorts of good stuff. I recommand this CD to anyone who likes COMPANY FLOW, THE WEATHERMEN, Or MF DOOM. This CD is packed with real hot beats and some real dope lyrics. It also has a little humor in it, which is always funny. The CD also includes a little story about the DJ named Bobbito Garcia aka DJ Cucumberslice. It has songs mostly from the era of Stretch and Bobbito. I think the best songs on the CD are The Cenonbites f/ Bobbito with "Kick a Dope Verse", and Yak Ballz with "Flossin". This CD is a perfect example of excellent underground sound. Blows away anything commercial. Go pick this up!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's 4.5 stars, but regardless, you should buy it.
If you've been sleeping, Bobbito Garcia's Fondle 'Em label was a great place for NYC-based hip-hop in the mid-to-late 90's. Featuring energetic, ridiculously talented MCs and producers, there were more than a few classics released on Fondle 'Em. Catch great moments from the Juggaknots, MF Grimm, MF Doom, The Cenobites (Kool Kieth and Godfather Don), The Arsonists, El-P, J-Treds, Binkis Records and more on this retrospective compilation. If you like fun, yet substantial hip-hop, with an East Coast slant, this album should be yours. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
I've always been a fan of hip hop as an artform. Listened to artosts like dr. octagon, dj shadow and krush and knowing that this form of music had a great amount of potential. This cd made me realise that hip hop is in fact the most relevant and maleable form of music out there today. I picked it up on vinyl at a local store because of the shadow track. That track turned out to be very short and not all that great just shadow and cut chemist having fun with some brainfreeze type stuff. But as I got further into it I realized that it had a wealth of great undiscovered to me talent. The track by presage is phenomenal (by far my favorite on the album). It's a 10 minute long epic with amazing vocal samples and a shadowesque sound to the music. I ended up buying presage's outer limits cd because of this song and that too is a great cd. Also on this album are dj faust, the mammal, dj zeph and a host of others. I don't have the track list with me so it's a little hard to remember all thats on there, but it is a solid album with a prevailing theme: hip hop is reconstructing itself, watch out. ... Read more

On their companion album to the splendid Book of Rap Lists, the folks at Ego Trip assemble a compelling anthology that plumbs hip-hop's historic (1983's epic "Beat Bop" by Rammelzee and K-Rob), obscure (MC Mitchski's lost "answer" rap to the whole Bronx/Queensbridge beef, "Brooklyn Blew Up the Bridge"), and esoteric (MC EZ and Troop's "Get Retarded") offerings from the 1980s' so-called golden era. Archival standards aside, the comp has some killer singles from rap's yesteryear, especially the brilliant "Droppin' It" by the Bizzie Boyz and Ultimate Force's hyper-than-a-heart-attack "I'm Not Playin.'" Just like the New York hip-hop scene enjoying its breakout moment in the mid- to late-80s, The Big Playback comes out swinging with swagger, every song an attempt at a knockout punch. --Oliver Wang ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a really good compilation album!
Hip-hop compilations and soundtracks are often wack (at some rare occasions decent) cause they often contain a load of commercialized bs. But the Union's "Organized Rhymes" is a really good compilation with some of the underground's best artists. Ras Kass, Guru,Sticky Fingaz, Da 5 Footaz and Big L (just to name a few) all make slammingguest appearances. The CD is worth buying for the "NY Freestyle"track (with Big L, McGruff, I-Born and CL Smooth) alone! 5 stars, no doubt!

Definitive Jux Presents II is the rarest of artifacts: a label showcase album that's consistent, cohesive, and utterly exciting. Listening to this potent New York label's artists is like being inducted into a secret society where hip-hop is smart and brutal, immediate and experimental--a true street art. 2001's Def Jux Presents was notable for the brilliant last recordings of the legendary Company Flow and their mastermind MC, El-P, who incidentally owns the Def Jux label. El-P dominates this volume, as well, producing nearly half of the tracks and starring on two. One of these, "Stepfather Factory," is the epitome of the Def Jux style: a dense, fierce fuzz with lyrics whose sci-fi turns of phrase never weaken their emotional punch. There's nothing here from the label's other heavy hitters, Cannibal Ox, although Ox man Vast Aire does crop up alongside El-P as part of the Atoms Family collective. The new stars this time are elegant DJ Shadow-style RJD2, baroque rhymer Y@k Ballz, and ultrasharp Boston MC Mr. Lif, who manages to name-check Harry Potter and Troy McClure on "Sneak Preview." This is odd, vivid, 100 percent compulsive stuff. --John Mulvey ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The New Independant Flag Ship!!!
Here we are again El/P and the crew with there brand of progressive dirty crazy hip hop fun for all the family!!
First off this is a much better showcase for the Def Jux label than the last 8 track offering, Yak balls, the Weathermen. and Atoms family all make their mark on an immensly diverse pack of crazy layered beats and grinding bass lines to please all Co flow fans of the past! Saying that. it does have a new flavour to it and eveything on this album will grow on you.... Check Yak balls freak show! One of the best beats I've heard in a while. and Paper Mache CRAZY BABY!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Jux (4.5 starz)
Def Jux is simply one of the best labels out there right now for independent hip hop. With great artists such as Mr. Lif, Murs, Aesop, C-Rayz, El-p, Cannibal Ox and Rjd2, th line up is very solid and looks very promising for the future of underground hip hop.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is [good]
I have listened to this album so many times I lost count. It is utterly essential listening for anyone into this music scene. This has not left my CD case even once, except to listen to it over and over. Have you ever shuddered when listening to a really great song? Do you ever get goosebumps or feel a tingle when you are deeply touched by a peice of music or a good book or film? Do you choke up a little when your favorite tune comes on. This record did that for me. I like every song, but the first track is the very best. I demand that you fork your hard-earned money over ... and get this record. You wont be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars I want more, gimme more. 4 1/2 stars
I love the direction that El-p's production is going in. I love all the beats they are so sci-fi/techno sounding and heavily layered. I think this is the best compilation album of all time, but I havent heard the Molemen - Ritual of the Molemen yet, I heard that is a good album. Anyway, Aesop comes with a strong track this time to make up for last albums dissapointing Kill Em All. Rob Sonic's track is cool but not as good as most of Sonic Sums material. Camu surprised the hell out of me, I think he's the 2nd best in MHZ aside from Copywrite. RJD2 track is unreal, I dont usually listen to just beats but I cant resist it. Atoms Fam has deffinately improved 110%. Yak B@llz song, pretty good but not as good as Tru City Killuz. Now for the best tracks, Mr. Lif and Murs have the illest cut on the album, Lif has me droolin for a new release. The other Lif track is nice too. I like the rest of the tracks, but they dont stand out as much. Worth every penny, dont let the price scare you. ... Read more
