5-0 out of 5 stars great
my favorite jaz cd///if you like slow relaxing jazz this is a must buy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what Beauty "sounds" like
Prepare yourself to be wrapped in a Smooth, Relaxed CD unhurried at it's best. This was my first acquaintance with Terence Blanchard and I've been hooked ever since. He does Billie Holiday Justice and every time I hear this CD it reminds me of Sundays with Rain outside my window pane or Ballroom dancing with flowing gowns. I hope one enjoys this masterpiece as well as I do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Renditions of Billy's Classics!
This is arguably Blanchard's best work. Smooth, soothing ballads and groovy upbeat renditions make this album fly by. I'm not a big fan of trumpet muting, but he employs it here without being shrill or annoying. The vocals are wonderful too. Jeanie Bryson does Billy's emotion justice while adding her own dash of sultry swing and flair. It's a great performance on all parts. Many of the ballads are reminiscent of "I'm Old Fashioned" by Coltrane and "Blue in Green" by Miles Davis. If that's what you like this has it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, entertaining, different Christmas music
The New Christy Minstrels were a great sixties band who had a lot of fun making folk-pop music, but underwent a lot of line-up changes even during their best years. They recorded two Christmas albums, three years apart, with completely different line-ups. All the 1963 members had left by the time the 1966 album was recorded. The staff turnover was so high in 1966 that most of those who recorded the album (in May) had left by the time the album was released in the fall. Among those who joined in 1966 (after the album was recorded) were Kenny Rogers and Kim Carnes, but even they could not halt the steady decline of the group.

An earlier reviewer suggested that those who like one of the albums making up this twofer might not like the other. Certainly, they are different from each other in some respects, but I love them both.

The 1963 album (titled Merry Christmas) was recorded when the band was at it's peak, with Green Green (their biggest hit) having it's chart run that year. The line-up was Nick Woods, Art Podell, Barry McGuire (who sang lead on Green Green and became famous for Eve of Destruction after he left the band), Barry Kane, Larry Ramos (who later founded The Association, famous for Cherish and Never my love), Clarence Trent, Doug Brookins and two female singers, Gayle Caldwell (soprano) and Jackie Miller Davidson (alto).

Most of the songs on the 1963 album were written by various members of the band, so even those (like me) who have large collections of Christmas music will find plenty of interest here. The songs are of a remarkably high quality and it is perhaps surprising that none of them have become standards.

The 1966 album (titled Christmas with the Christies) was recorded when the group was already in decline generally, but this is still a fine album - it was probably the last great album recorded by the band, although I haven't heard any of their later music, very little of which is available now and probably for a good reason. The line-up was Bob Buchanan, Bill Teague, Bill Skiles, Pete Henderson, Michael McGinnis, Peter-John Morse and two female singers, Ann White (soprano) and Ede Mae Kellogg (alto). Another fine alto, Karen Gunderson, had joined the group, stayed for two years and left between the two albums so was one of the few Minstrels from the era to miss out on both albums.

The 1966 album is slicker than it's predecessor - more pop, less folk, and consists almost entirely of standards which appear on many other Christmas albums. However, these versions are distinctive, with all the different voices and a variety of lead singers, so I still rate it highly.

The New Christy Minstrels were different from all their contemporaries and there has never been anything like them (regardless of line-up) before or since.

5-0 out of 5 stars Searched for years for the CD version of Merry Christmas.
I grew up with Merry Christmas as my favorite Xmas album of all time and searched for years for the CD version and had given up until I found it together with the later 1966 on Complete! It is wonderful to be able to listen to it now without all the scratches and skips. It is the favorite in my household and now everyone has this CD in my family. I collect Christmas CD's buying several new ones each year, but this is my favorite still. I still favor the 1963 LP although I enjoy the bonus of having the 2nd 1966 Xmas release as well. I too cannot believe this CD doesn't recieve more reknown and airtime play during the holidays. The last bonus track is one of the most hauntingly beautiful melodies I have heard.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the better Christmas albums
One of the better Christmas albums!
A well recorded and performed collection of material,
Merry christmas!

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth purchasing
The album comes in two parts: The first section is songs specially written for the band by the bandleader, the second part is covers of classic christmas songs.

I find the first part worth the price of the CD, as the songs reflect the band in its best light. The second part, while decent, seems more workmanish and rote.

Most interesting are the liner notes, which trace the various members through the years. One would almost be surprised to find that Kenny Rogers was once a member of this band -- and that he went on to create the psychadelic-country band "Kenny Rogers and The First Edition."

All in all, a good thing to purchase

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas with The New Christy Minstrels
Easy calming listening and also a rollicking good time. a combination that was good to visit again. This album combines both. Excellent sampling of the folk music styles of the 60's, when we still had some of our innocence and before the horror of Vietnam and the protests. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Straw-buh-buh-buh-buh-berry Good!!!!
I bought this CD for my one-year-old daughter for Christmas. She absolutely loves this!!! She listens to this CD every day and dances along to it! She will even find the jewel case and carry it around the house, saying, "Buh-buh-buh!" The songs are catchy and fast, and the little children's high-pitched voices are kind of sweet (not overly annoying). I often find myself humming the songs in my head as I go about my day. This one is a favorite in our house, even after Christmas is over! ... Read more

Cohesiveness is what separates this all-star Christmas release from the others. During the last four years, Dave Koz, vocalist Brenda Russell, pianist David Benoit, guitarist Peter White, and trumpeter Rick Braun have hit the road spreading holiday cheer among the smooth-jazz masses and their collaborative ease is palpable throughout these 14 tracks. Benoit is featured on "Hark the Herald Angels Sing," while Koz adds one of his best solos. Braun has the spotlight on "Little Drummer Boy," where Benoit shines too, and White highlights "Silent Night." All five players are credited for arrangements on most tracks, the craftiest of which is the '50's doo-wop of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," where you can almost hear the Drifters singing in the background. Russell also does a holiday version of her hit "Get Here," which is as powerful now as it was 10 years ago during the Gulf War. --Mark Ruffin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Really Beautiful Holiday CD.!!
I just received this excellent album by the superb Dave Koz and his wonderful group of musicians. It really is a winner, in so many ways. Relaxing, soothing and, as well, a great way to celebrate the Holiday season all year round.

A Smooth Jazz Christmas and I Remember December CD with Patricia O'Callaghan and the Timmins Youth Singers are presently two of my favorites CDs. I collect all kinds of Christmas CDS...but there are only a few that remain at the top of my list..and A Smooth Jazz Christmas is one of them!

Dave Koz...thank you for creating such an inspirational Holiday recording.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tops for a smooth jazz Christmas
This is a group that really works together, especially on jazz arrangements of Christmas standards.

Dave Koz certainly doesn't hog the spotlight here. He and Benoit do share honors in a splendid rendition of "Hark The Herald Angels Sing". But other highlights include Peter White's guitar in a movingly effective "Silent Night", and Braun's trumpet with Benoit's piano on "Little Drummer Boy". And vocalist Brenda Russell quite shines with "Boogie Woogie Santa Claus", "White Christmas", and "Get Here (For the Holidays)".

The music and the Christmas feeling here transcends genre. I most heartily recommend this to one and all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, iam late for the party but its worth the journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Christmas
I was at work this month and happened to find this CD on the shelf next to the CD player. I put it in, not knowing who the group was or what their music sounded like. I was amazed when I heard O come Emmanuel. What a great song!! I listened to the rest of the cd and was instantly hooked on Selah. Their voices are amazing. I took the CD home and made my own copy. The rest of my family loves the CD!! If you're looking for a Christmas CD that doesn't sing about snow, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph or the 12 Days of Christmas, this is the CD for you. A great buy and something you can look forward to every christmas!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of Christmas carols
Nicol Smith, Todd Smith and Allan Hall make up Selah, a trio that I knew nothing about when I bought this album. All three of them are wonderful singers and each gets a chance to sing lead. The songs are a mix of originals and covers but all of them focus on the religious aspects of Christmas - you won't find Santa, reindeer or snowflakes here.

Silent night, O come o come Emmanuel, What child is this and O holy night are just distinctive enough to make them interesting, but no attempt has been made to do anything too clever with them.

Dolly Parton guests as duet singer on Once upon a Christmas, a song that she wrote for the Christmas album she did with Kenny Rogers in 1984. It was the title track and I think it is one of the best songs of its kind ever written. Dolly sang harmony (with Linda Ronstadt and Neil Young) on Emmylou's original version of Light of the stable, also covered here.

Those are the only songs that I'd come across before, though Rose of Bethlehem, written in 1992, may also a cover. This stirring song, sung by Nicol, provides a brilliant climax to a stunning Christmas album. Nicol also sings lead on What child is this, Joy and O holy night. From hearing these four songs, it comes as no surprise to learn that Nicol has recorded solo as well as with the men in Selah.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
This album is just perfect just as perfect as Be Still My Soul & Press On. It was just what you would expect from Selah, beautifully arranged, a pleasure to listen to and we are not even close to Christmas yet. I am waiting with bated breath for anything else they release.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent all year long
My husband and I are still listening to this CD even though it's March! We haven't grown tired of the beautiful melodies and words. It is truly glorifying to the Lord!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Timeless
This latest offering by the sibling duo is another jewel in the crown of Great Christmas Albums. From the beautiful duet of Silent Night to the inclusion of Dolly Parton on her own Once Upon A Christmas, this album spans they years of time and the talents of many of the Christian World's best song writers. The album as a true treasure in it's simplicity and message of the birth of our Lord. I love their rendition of O Come,O Come Emmanuel as well as the very soulful song Mystery. This album is definitely on my newest "Best Christmas Album" especially for Christmas Eve when the family gets together to remember the blessed night. ... Read more

Although Dan Peek left America in 1976, the remaining members--Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley--recapture the magic that put the folk rock trio atop the charts 25 years ago on Holiday Harmony, their first Christmas album. Much of the credit must go to seminal 1970s figure Andrew Gold, who not only produced and engineered the record, but played all the instruments (save Beckley's and Bunnell's guitars) and added his own soaring background vocals to the 13 songs. Gold also cowrote "Christmas in California," one of the three originals on the disc, which, with its tight harmonies and breezy subject matter, could have been lifted off The Beach Boys' Christmas Album. In an unusual twist for a holiday album, America's newly penned songs are the best tunes on the collection. Beckley and Bunnell haven't lost their chemistry and homespun imagination, conjuring images of Yuletides past on the excellent "Christmas to Remember" and the witty "Winter Holidays." When the duo cover Christmas classics, they seem to bend them to their will, adding background harmonies on "Winter Wonderland" that recall the ones they used on "A Horse with No Name." On their version of "White Christmas," Beckley and Bunnell incorporate the melody line from "Tin Man," with surprisingly good results. --Jaan Uhelszki ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This was my favorite gift!
I have to say I am somewhat surprised to say this is a great album! America covers the holiday classics with their own unique touch and wrote three new songs that range from very good to excellent. They have never sounded better. This is a must purchase for any America fan and I recommend it to others as well. If hearing the backbeat to Tin Man during the start of White Christmas enhances your enjoyment rather than detracts, this will quickly become your all-time favorite holiday CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Ole Favorites with the Magic of America
Once again, America delivers a knock out album......and what an album it is.......great traditional Christmas favorites with the inimitable style of Beckley and Bunnell. Also, the 3 new original songs are awesome...especially, "Winter Holidays". I had not bought any new Christmas music this year for the lack of something new or different...then comes along America....splendid!! I have been a fan since I was 6 years old in 1974 and it never ceases to amaze me on how the Duo keeps churning out great music with great guitar playing, that still lifts me up like no one else can.
Keep it up, Guys.....and Merry Christmas!

4-0 out of 5 stars two things to love
this album combines two things i have loved for a very long time: Christmas music and the incredible voices of "America!" if you are an "America" fan, you should consider adding this to your holiday music collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a pleasant surprise!
I got this as a X-mas gift and have always loved America. But ,I'll be honest, I thought," America doing Christmas songs?" Come on -how good could this be?
It is Wonderful! I've listened to it all day today on Christmas Eve and it will be my favorite each December. It may be the best holiday cd in my collection. I highly recommend it, It's cute how they use Horse with No Name and Tin Man melodies in several of the tunes too.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT Christmas Album
This Christmas Album/CD is the most TASTEFULLY done, brillantly written, and uplifting piece of work done by anyone else, whose attempted,in the last DECADE. They have managed to take the old classics/favorites and personally and respectfully done them in the great AMERICA style we all know and love. They have also written 3 original tracks as well on this CD,and they are so awesome,SO,AMERICA.This is a great CD for the whole family to listen to and enjoy, and a keeper for all Christmases and all year around. I'ts the great, vintage AMERICA sound. Very well done, hats off to you both. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sacred Pleasure
It is a wonderful thing when the skill in a musician's hands is wedded to affection for God in his heart. Cyrus Chestnut brings that powerful combination to the keyboard, and it is most evident in this recording.

_Blessed Quietness_ has it all: boisterous exultation in God's glory, quiet adoration of God's beauty, thoughtful contemplation of God's love, pleas for God's mercy and help, playful frolics in God's joy. That Cyrus Chestnut can say all this so clearly through a piano says a lot about his hands, mind, and heart. Listening to him play is a distinct pleasure.

Lest non-Christians think, based on what I've written so far, there isn't anything here for them, I will say this: there's plenty of flat-out good jazz here that anyone can enjoy. The devil doesn't have all the good music, you know. And if this recording is any indication, God still has the very best music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect piano arrangements of familiar inspirational songs
Through his mega-talented fingers, Cyrus breathes new life into each song represented here. This collection of music is both relaxing and engaging to listen to at the same time, depending on what your mood happens to be while it's playing.

Note: the only instrument on this entire body of work is the piano...period. But with Cyrus, trust me; that's more than enough! You will be amazed at these arrangements, and the piano is used to bring out each and every nuance, even ones that you might not expect. It also helps that the sound quality of this recording is top-notch, also.

"Blessed Quietness" lives up to its title, and will water your soul. Thank you Cyrus, for this spiritual and artful masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blessed Indeed
I'm fifty-four, am tired of the malls, of the madness, and of the materialism--you know, the Christmas-in-America thing. What I want and need are those tender mercies that this season affords, those blessings that sometimes get lost amidst the shop-'til-you-drop frenzy.
Cyrus Chestnut's cd is all you need for this season or any season. It speaks directly to the soul, with spirituals such as "Walk with Me, Jesus" to a starkly simple "Silent Night" to the title track. Cyrus is in no hurry; he lingers over these tunes, massages the keys, and produces music that is sweet, fragile at times, and always affirming.
A cd for all seasons from one of jazz's most original and soulful young talents.
Don't rush to the store. Order on-line. It's crazy out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music for a Silent Night
A year or so ago, I was watching a TV show where Kathleen Battle was being interviewed. When asked what she would be listening to during the holidays, she mentioned Cyrus Chestnut. With this kind of endorsement, I knew I had to hear this musician, and when I lcoated the CD with the wonderful name of "Blessed Quietness", well........! This is a beautiful CD and with its inclusion of spirituals and hymns as well as carols, it need not be put away after the holidays. It is good for an evening of blessed quietness whatever the time of year.

5-0 out of 5 stars "inspired music to live by"
Cyrus plays with a combination of touch, passion and grace. These inspired songs put me right where I wanted to be, in touch with the Almighty. Having seen him live in New York last year, it was even better in person.

Thanks for sharing! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I'd Give it 2.5 if I Could..but
The songs here are lovely and are sure to invoke childhood memories and the holiday spirit, however, despite having the same picture on the front, this is NOT the same Time-Life Christmas CD set you've seen advertised on TV. THAT set you can order directly from Time-Life...and it contains over twice as much music and the songs are performed by differnt classic performers. Considering what you get, I'll spend a little extra and order it there. I'm sure this CD set will please, but I think it's deceptive that Time-Life is marketing this with the same name and cover given the significant differences between the two sets.

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I am 38 years old and bought this CD trying to get into the christmas spirit for the wife and kids. However, my wife and I didn't grow up in the era of these musicians, and our parents didn't listen to them much either. So the album is pretty boring for us. Might be good in a department store.

2-0 out of 5 stars Should have been sold as one CD.
The music itself is fantastic but as the other reviewers have mentioned, the songs could have all fit into one CD. I have the original 2-CD set from TV, but frequent use took its toll so I bought this one. I listen to this copy often as well, but am a bit slighted by the undisguised attempt to charge more for less.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a Rip-Off
I have the original Time Life Treasury of Christmas Set. Same Cover ect. Unfortunately I scratched Disc B and wanted to replace it. The original set had 22 songs on disc A and 23 on disc B. All great classics. Now Time-Life is trying to sell half the music for twice the price. Forget it. What's here just isn't worth the money.

3-0 out of 5 stars All the Classics
I'm a big Christmas Music fan - I've got over 20 CDs, which is a lot for just one month's worth a listening a year. This CD is a great start for any collection.

It's got all the classic recordings by the quintessential artists. You won't find Britney Spears doing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer - it's Gene Autry, thank you very much.

If you just want something to put on after Thanksgiving or while you're wrapping presents, this is a good choice. It'll get you in the Christmas mood. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is Christmas!
I've had this album for many years now, and I cannot emphasize enough just how good it is. There is not a single track on the entire CD that even slips to mediocrity... they're all excellent. Most people claim that the original Mannheim Steamroller Christmas was the best, and in all fairness, this one is highly derivative of that album. But Chip Davis has taken everything that worked on that earlier album and improved it here. I even think his rendition of "Cantique De Noel (O Holy Night)" is superior to what he did with "Silent Night" on the first album, and that's saying a lot. Chip perfectly blends acoustic and electronic sounds throughout the album, and hearing the Cambridge Singers sing "Veni Veni" and "Still Still Still" is quite beautiful. The two most prominent Christmas moods (joy and nostalgia) are each captured perfectly throughout the album. If you have any interest at all in Christmas music, you'd be shortchanging yourself by not buying this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Must!!
This album contains some of the most beautiful Christmas music I've ever heard..."The Holly and the Ivy" has to be one of my favorites on this CD, it's so gorgeous. And Chip Davis' attempt at writing his own Christmas carol was definitely successful, I hope he continues to do more (his "Christmas Lulluby" on the following Christmas CD is just as wonderful, even though it heavily borrows from Brahm's lullaby.) I have to say though, since "O Holy Night" is my favorite Christmas tune of all time, I was somewhat dissapointed by this rendition of it...he takes some liberties with the melody in the first verse that I didn't agree with; I thought it should've been left in its traditional format. I did, however, love the Beethoven style piano in the intro. Overall, a beautiful collection of Christmas music. If you don't have it, get it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Any Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Music Fan!
I like Christmas music and when I heard Mannheiem Steamroller's Christmas music for the first time I was mesmerized by how wonderful and different it is. Now Fresh Aire Christmas is not my #1 favorite Mannheim Steamroller Christmas CD but it is very good and has some wonderful Christmas music and I love how they blend modern sounds with an old worldy sound and I greatly recommend this CD along with ther other Christmas CD's!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply necessary for your Christmas season
As far as I could search through the seas of mediocre Christmas music, Mannheim Steamroller is definitely at the very crest of the Christmas genre. Mannheim knows how to blend the radical synthesized sounds of the new millennium with the traditional to create a truly unique category all its own.

One of four Mannheim Christmas albums, the name of this is A Fresh Aire Christmas. (Mannheim is always including the word "aire" in their album names. It must be something in the watre)

Track 1: (1:23) A slower beginning than the usual "grab your ear" track that begins a Mannheim album, yet this one is just a warm-up. It is a slow tune, yet majestic in its own way. But it merely lays down the pavement, then steamrolls over it to bring you....

Track 2: (3:27) The very kind of Mannheim you're looking for. Digital, synth, percussion, strings, bass, this tune is upbeat, fun, and enjoyable.

Track 3: (4:15) A haunting, gorgeous rendition of the traditional tune "O Come, O Come Emmanuel". It is sung in Latin, and it makes you feel as if you were hearing the song at its first playing, in a Gregorian monastery. This is precisely the Mannheim Maestro intended, and he carries it off absolutely beautifully.

Track 4: (2:58) Very simple at first, and easy listening. Primarily flute in the beginning, it reminds one of a simple holly bush silently bending in a snowy, winter wind. Very lovely track.

Track 5: (4:06) Primarily synthesized sounds for this classic drum song. It grows gradually much more majestic. Nice.

Track 6: (3:39) A very soothing, beautiful carol sung by a choir. It is almost lullaby in its tune, and an excellent track just to sit down and chill from Christmas bustle.

Track 7: (2:23) Very traditionally done, primarily by the classic orchestra sounds.

Track 8: (2:43) This carol originates from a legend of a German monk in 1365. The title is Latin, and the song is a rather Scottish, or Celtic flair to it. (By the way, it is also known as "Good Christian Men Rejoice")

Track 9: (3:24) A rather quiet tune. Mostly strings and flute, but this track too grows into a very lovely, meaningful tune.

Track 10: (3:48) This is a mega-cool version of the Carol of the Bells. Beginning slowly with hand bells, it quickly escalates into ultra-modern, spectacular Mannheim tune. Probably one of the best that they've made. There are bells galore, but the best part is when the grand horns sound in. Way cool.

Track 11: (3:42) This song is an original composed by Chip Davis. (Presumably for his wife, based on the comments in the insert) The song is one of THE sweetest, most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life, and don't underestimate that claim. It brings to mind the warm, fuzzy memories of Christmas mornings as a kid. Family reunions, apple butter, pine trees all come rushing back in a lovely wave of nostalgia. We should all get on our knees and beg Chip Davis to compose another original.

Track 12: (5:19) Otherwise known as O Holy Night, it begins very quietly with piano keys playing a charming little melody, but is joined by a lovely violin to play the actual song. Even though this is one of my favorite Christmas songs, it is still beat out by Traditions of Christmas, but Cantique de Noel is still great.

Mannheim is simply a must-have for your Christmas season, whether you like to rock your roof off or stick it in your mini stereo. Do yourself a favor, and buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Christmas CD!
I have listened to most of the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas albums, but I really like this one - mostly because of "Carol of the Bells". I absolutely love this CD! I would highly recommend it, along with the other Mannheim Steamroller Christmas albums. ... Read more

Veteran Christian band Newsong decided to include thesentimental ballad, "Christmas Shoes," as a bonus track on 2000's Sheltering Tree, unaware that the almost O. Henry-esque tale about a young boyattempting to buy a pair of shoes as a Christmas present for his dyingmother would blow up into a massive hit. So overwhelming was theresponse to that song (it landed atop Billboard's Adult ContemporaryChart) that the group decided to fashion an entire holiday album aroundit, naturally titling it Christmas Shoes. In addition to theheart-wrenching title track, the contemporary Christian rockers serveup some beautifully arranged versions of cherished favorites such as"Away in the Manger/God Rest Ye, Merry Gentleman," "The First Noel,"and "What Child Is This," as well as an impish, rather histrionicversion of "You're a Mean One, Mr.Grinch" which should tickle theunderage set. Newsong have also written a number of well-crafted,infectious holiday songs that don't bludgeon you with heavy-handedinspirational messages, but instead shine brightly with the true spiritof the holiday. --Jaan Uhelszki ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it because of the famous song, LOVE all the other songs!
Last Christmas, radio stations were playing "Christmas Shoes". Just in case you missed it, here's the Chorus:

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

So it's worth buying the album for that one song, but every song on this album is GREAT! I love their opening track Christmastime is Here/Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. Sing Noel is one of my favorites on the album. Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree is such fun to listen to! Then they stuck "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch". I like their version of it better than the Go Fish version on their Christmas album "More Than a Story".

You will recognize "Light Your World" - it was written in 1989, and I had never heard it on an album - just on the radio. So that was a wonderful surprise! And I liked what they did with the traditional Christmas carols. Sometimes they're changed so much in trying to make them unique that they aren't at all appealling! You will surely enjoy the lush orchestration on all these wonderful Christmas carols.

The original songs "As the World Slept" and "Christmas Carol" will become a favorites. Listen carefully to the lyrics - unfortunately the liner notes have the lyrics for just one song -Christmas Shoes.

NewSong's rendition of "O Holy Night" is majestic and moving! A fitting end for a great Christmas CD!

May God bless you as you celebrate Jesus' birth this Christmas season!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD!
I have been a fan of Newsong for a few years now. Last November, I was listening to country radio and this song came on entitled "The Christmas Shoes." What a touching tribute to a mother who gave everything for her family. Everybody I talked to loved this song, even though they cried through it. And now it's the title cut on a Christmas CD for Newsong! I just had to buy it! (I have always had a weakness for Christmas music as well.) "Christmas Carol" was a beautiful song about a fading lady who remembered the true meaning of the season. Newsong put their classic "Light Your World" on this project, reminding us that we need to let Christ's light shine to all we see. I loved the new version of "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree" - it made me want to dance. And they added "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch" to lighten up the serious mood. "As The World Slept" made me wonder just how quietly Jesus entered the world in order to change the destiny of every living soul forever. This CD is a must-have for any collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Album Ever!
I don't care what anybody says I love the song "The Christmas Shoes", I hear it on the local radio station at Christmas time and always hope that they will play it again, and I cry everytime I hear it. And also if anybody reads this(ever) Merry Christmas to you all!

1-0 out of 5 stars Shameless
Look, I understand that we all like a good cry now and then, but this song is over the top. A poor boy wants to buy his dying mother a pair of shoes for Christmas, and has to hurry "in case Mama meets Jesus tonight"? And the nice guy behind him in line gives him the money, so now he understands the true spirit of Christmas? Oh well, I guess it could have been worse: they could have switched the roles and had the mother buying one last toy for her dying child.

And, despite what one earlier reviewer said, not liking this song doesn't make one heartless. Anyone can make people cry by conjuring up images of dying parents, dying children, dying pets, whatever, and then throwing the whole Christmas spirit thing on top of it... it's called emotional abuse. You want to sit there and listen to "Christmas Shoes", and cry, be my guest. This song is no different than me walking up to you, saying "Hey, do you have kids? Imagine how they'd feel if you were dying on Christmas. Have a nice day!", and then walking away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome! Amazing! Fabulous!
The Song The Christmas Shoes touched my heart!!! I don't understand where people get off saying that it's annoying! They are probably all skeptics with no imagination or sympathy. They need to listen to the song and see what it really means. I'm only 12 years old and even I cry when I hear it. It makes you think about world problems that are happening today in our very own country! I love The Christmas Shoes!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Traditional carols at their Best!
If you are looking for recordings of some of the traditional carols and songs from your childhood to share with your child, look no further. This CD collection is great for home, school, or church. The children's voices on the recording are good without sounding like a "pop star wannabe". I play this CD for my 18 month old to dance and sing with, I use it at school, and the split track format allows me to even use it for performances at school and with my children's choir at church. I own the cassette version as well as the CD version. There is also a companion product from the same company entitled Christmas Carols that is a great addition to your collection, too. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Some good gems, but my least favorite of series
There are some good moments on this one, but this is my least favorite of Winter Solstice series. I think Windham Hill did return to form & quality with their next offering, "A Winter Solstice Reunion". This one opens with an uncharacteristically "smooth-jazz" piece called "Joyful Times".
"Yesterday's Rain" & "Snow Dance" are pleasant, but to my ears they are in a similar vein. (Perhaps more New Age-like). And "Western Sky" is similarly pretty, but at nearly seven minutes, it becomes a bit long & repetitive. This is the most uneven disc to date. The earlier discs contained quiet, often acoustic pieces that weren't quite as slickly (over) produced. Most likely this reflects the departure of Will Ackerman a few years before, and I believe Dawn Atkinson may not have worked on this one either though I may be mistaken. There are still some great gems here, such as Michael Hedges' "Ursa Major", Liz Story's "Snowfall" & Tim Story's great contributions .

5-0 out of 5 stars Slow pace Christmas treat, sit back and enjoy....
This is the most relaxing Christmas Music. Each note is in a way a Christmas Present for your ears. The Celtic influence is a lovely change and you can feel a sense of Christmas magic is woven through this CD. Some pieces are Jazzy, but still laid back. "Secret Places" is in a way haunting. "Snow Dance" is serious, while "Western Sky" is all encompassing and classic. You really can't feel rushed when you want to listen to this music. I won't let you rush at all, it will make you sit down and sip hot spiced apple cider! Take a deep breath...you can do this....

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best of the Winter Solstice series
I have bought several of the Winter Solstice records as an alternative to the usual fare including "Winter Solstice Reunion",and "Solstice on Ice" which came after this release and which I thought were substantial disapointments.Winter Solstice VI is by far better than those and better than the original Winter Solstice releases as well which originally led me to hear this cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Broad Appeal
The Windham Hill Winter Solstice series started out as primarily holiday music. In this sixth, and perhaps the best, incarnation, that no longer appears to be the case. Consequently, enjoying this beautiful music is not linked to the Christmas season. One need not feel the least bit self-conscious about playing this CD in July or August. And what a break that is; this music is too pretty to be couped-up for 11 months out of the year and only enjoyed for one. So enjoy it when the snow flies and also around the pool with a tall glass of lemonade.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best!
This is so different from the others in the series. Everyone who has heard it, even when playing softly in the background, have stopped and commented on the beauty of it. Don't miss this one. ... Read more

Backed by lush orchestration and a choir of quite formal carolers, Michael Crawford's A Christmas Album plays as an elegant concert rather than a random collection of seasonal ditties. An entertainment embracing the good news of Christ's birth, A Christmas Album is thankfully not something we'll hear booming all over town as we shop till we drop. Instead, this is precisely the type of recording one might enjoy at home with family while making an advent wreath or preparing holiday goodies to be shared with loved ones. Crawford's rich theatricality and classical arrangements invoke a joyful sense of spirit in readiness for the Holy babe who came to light the world. There is comfort here. Following ritual and tradition in this timeless mode of celebration, one is both warmed and delivered by the heralding tones of Crawford and his army of singing angels. --Paige La Grone ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Michael Crawford's Lush Voice in an Atypical Christmas Album
Like most Michael Crawford fans, I am drawn to most anything he does. His particular vocal quality makes even mid-range high notes sound like he is soaring (and with ease, I might add) -- this is one of any tenor's appeal to the masses. Additionally, the songs are in many cases little known, so I found myself listening more intently to the lyrics, which are beautiful in their simplicity. They bring home the message of Christ's birth and its importance in our world.

I did find some of the arrangements to be rather unusual, and in some cases (Joy to the World, in particular) the tempo was simply too fast. That said, however, Michael Crawford comes off once again with a sincere and appealing sound, and a recording that you won't duplicate with any other collection or performer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CHRISTMAS ALBUM
I WAS JUST ABOUT TO ASK A CLERK IF MICHAEL CRAWFORD HAS DONE A CHRISTMAS ALBUM. BEFORE THE WORDS CAME OUT I FOUND MY ANSWER. I HAVE REALLY BEEN INSPIRED BY MICHAEL CRAWFORD'S PRESENTATION OF MUSIC. THIS NEW ALBUM IS JUST AS EXCITING. OUR CHOIR JUST DID THE CANTATA "MARY DID YOU KNOW". THE FAMILIAR WORDS OF THIS SONG TOOK ON MORE MEANING AS I LISTENED TO MICHAEL. THE RENDITION OF"PEACE, PEACE/SILENT NIGHT" HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FAVORITE. FOLLOWING A SERMON ABOUT JOSEPH THE LITTLE KNOWN EARTHLY FATHER OF CHRIST OUR PASTOR PLAYED "A STRANGE WAY TO SAVE THE WORLD". SO APPROPRIATE! MY HEART SANG WITH THE MUSIC. I LOOK FORWARD TO MORE CD'S/ALBUMS BY MICHAEL CRAWFORD. EACH NEW ONE BRINGS MORE SURPRISES AS HIS RENDITIONS OF MUSIC MAKE YOU WANT TO LISTEN AND REALLY FEEL THE MEANING OF THE BEAUTIFFUL WORDS. HE IS CERTAINLY AN "ANGEL OF MUSIC". MUSIC CAN TOUCH THE HEART BETTER THAN SERMONS, READING, ETC.. IT'S A BEAUTIFUL ART FORM. MICHAEL CRAWFORD UTILIZES IT TO THE FULLEST. KEEP THE MUSIC COMING MICHAEL. YOU'RE FABULOUS!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gentler Side of the Phantom
You think the Phantom of the Opera is some sort of monster, don't you? No, you are the monster! How dare you judge a man by his outward appearance! I'm sure if you took two seconds to truly reach out to the Phantom, you would find that amidst his killing, scheming, and kidnapping of young women, he too enjoys singing Christmas Carols just like the rest of us!

So stop being such an awful, judgmental person, you pitiful excuse for a human, and go out there and buy the Phantom's Christmas CD right now!

Go on! Shoo!

Irish music is particularly rich in songs relating to the celebration of Christmas. Cherish The Ladies, an all-female band made up of Irish-born and first generation Irish-American performers, has mined the purest gold for this delightful set. The 10 tracks are given sensitive yet robust acoustic treatments by a consort of top-notch players. Bandleader Joanie Madden's mastery of tin whistle, low whistle and flute has taken her all over the globe and onto dozens of albums. Lead singer Heidi Talbot's husky-sweet tone is further graced by refreshingly uncluttered phrasing. Mary Coogan's intricate plucked strings, Mirella Murray's lively yet mellow squeezebox, Donna Long's Cape-Breton-inflected piano and Marie Reilly¹s propulsive fiddle are all remarkable but each nonetheless meshes into a tightly arranged, flawless whole. The program evokes nostalgia for joyous childhood holidays long past but also reflects the wistful prayer for peace that a modern celebrant might offer up in difficult times. --Christina Roden ... Jim Brickman's 1997 holiday package is all satin bows and glowing hearth embers, precisely the approach his romantically inclined legions would have wished him to take. Those with less sentimental ears might argue that at times the pianist's approach is a touch too sweet. "Joy to the World" would be more affecting as a solo work, for instance, and we could have done without the strings and music-box embellishments heard in "Angels." Yet Brickman compensates by delicately tracing a path to our heart-of-hearts in the album's two superb, nonholiday originals, "Fireside" and "Winter Peace." Three vocal tracks surface here: a breathy Kenny Loggins sings on the album's obligatory lullaby ("Starbright"), the female gospel group Point of Grace takes a bow ("Hope is Born Again"), and country vocalist Collin Raye performs a heart-clutching duet with Susan Ashton on the title track. It's not Brickman's finest record, but it's a very pretty one. --Terry Wood ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Christmas CD, it's well worth your money!
I love this CD so much! My mom got me hooked on Jim Brickman and his "The Gift" is one of the best. I liked the song "Hope is Born Again" so much that I played it on repeat all night during the holiday season most every night. The "Gift" and "Starbright" are also some of my non traditional Christmas favorites. For those fans of traditional Christmas music, he has also included many beautiful arrangements of these. It is a must have CD for the Christmas season!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for Christmas meditation
I sure won't disagree with those who think this a great CD for background Christmas party music, or for a romantic atmosphere, but I find it also ideal for private meditation during the season, when you are alone in a darkened room lit only by a Christmas candle. The familiar carols are all instrumentals played in such a way that you find yourself meditating on the familiar phrases. "Joy To The World" is a prime example. You won't find yourself singing along to this kind of rendition, but you will find your mind focussing on the words in a meditative way.

The instrumental originals such as "Angels", "Fireside", and especially "Winter Peace" are also conducive to contemplation as is the Kenny Loggins vocal on "Starbright".

However, "Dreams Come True" towards the end of the CD, a duet with saxophone, rather breaks the mood and prepares one for the final cut, "The Gift" with Colin Ray and Susan Ashton. The only nitpicking I have, and it's minor, is this: I already have this rendition on another Brickman CD and expect to find the exact same rendition on the Collin Raye Christmas CD I have ordered, not to mention the Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson version on "Winter Solstice on Ice" and personally think: "Hey, isn't that enough of 'The Gift?'"

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely religious Christmas piano music
I purchased this cd because I had heard "Joy to the World" on a compilation CD of various artists. I was otherwise unfamiliar with Jim Brickman. I liked his piano style on this song with some light jazzy overtones. "The Gift" is a mostly instrumental CD. I would have liked a bit more variety in his piano playing from song to song. I enjoyed the largely traditional treatment of my favorite Christmas carols. I recommend this CD to anyone looking for religious Christmas piano music. The music is both spiritual and soothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars must-have CD
If you like Jim Brickman's music, you must have this CD. You may play in Christmas season.

Ireland's world-class ambassadors the Chieftains seem determined to play with anyone who is anyone, regardless of genre. On The Bells of Dublin, they do an exceptional job of teaming up with the likes of rockers Jackson Browne and Elvis Costello, as well as songbirds Marianne Faithfull, Rickie Lee Jones, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, and Nanci Griffith. There are many resplendent performances here, the least of which is Costello and company's raucous "St. Stephen's Day Murders." 3-0 out of 5 stars Has not aged well.
I bought this CD the year it was released in '91, and every Christmas season since I've listened to it.. However, it seems that every Christmas it gets less and less playing time than some of my other Christmas CDs. It's a mixed bag. I absolutely love the opening reel- "Christmas Eve" and think all the songs performed with the Renaissance Singers to be pretty terrific. I also greatly enjoy the traditional carols and instrumental medleys which occasionally feature the Voice Squad.

However, I think the 4/10/01 review hit the nail squarely on the head about why this CD does not achieve greatness- the Chieftains decision to let fading rock/pop stars not only sing with them, but also write some very bad songs which were then placed on the CD. Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Ricki Lee Jones, and Marianne Faithful weren't exactly at the peak of their careers when this CD was recorded and now ten years later they're even more irrelevent. The two biggest offenders are the songs of Mr. Costello and Mr. Browne. The "St. Stephen's Day Murders" was an attempt to be funny and lighthearted, but comes across as dreary as its author/singer, Costello. Browne's "The Rebel Jesus" is a preachy, hippie-dippie ditty which will probably make the listener more apt to yawn than waste time dwelling on Browne's condenscending message.

I would recommend this CD to lovers of Irish traditional music who would like a CD with a Christmas flavor. However, it's highly advisable to use your program device on the CD to avoid the very weak songs featuring the talents of over-the-hill singers with weak voices.

5-0 out of 5 stars The world's fastest way to get the holiday spirit!
Every year I try to restrain myself until the day after Thanksgiving to bring out The Bells of Dublin. After that I play it almost continually until Christmas, and I never get tired of it. It starts up a giant holiday party in my heart.

From the moment the bells peel on the first track ("The Bells of Dublin"), calling in the season, to the angelic voice of the lad who begins the final medley (beginning with "Once in Royal David's City"), I love every bit. In between there is joy (Skyline Jig), beautiful melody (The Wexford Carol with Nanci Griffith) quiet reverence (O Holy Night with Rickie Lee Jones), the sweetness of voices in harmony (Il Est Ne with the McGarrigle Sisters), celebratory dancing I defy you to sit still to (The Wren medley), and even enough little tongue-in-cheek Irish subversiveness to avoid sentimentality (St. Stephen's Day Murders with Elvis Costello, The Rebel Jesus with Jackson Browne).

The Chieftains' worldclass expertise on traditional Irish instruments is front and center on this album, but the many famous guests also have lots of fun. I have never known a Christmas album that could come anywhere close to the Bells of Dublin for generating the holiday spirit.

4-0 out of 5 stars A (mostly) terrific CD
This is a delightful compilation of the Chieftains' rendition of Christmas songs. My whole family enjoys it immensely. I have to agree with another reviewer, however, that it does slow down into a non-Celtic vein on a couple of occasions, like Jackson Browne's "Rebel Jesus", which I like anyway, but really bogs down with Rickie Lee Jones's "O Holy Night" - which we skip.
Well worth the investment, for the most part.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This excellent CD contains twenty-three (!) tunes by the incomparable Chieftains. Most of these wonderful tunes are the Chieftains working with others, such as the Renaissance Singers and even Elvis Costello (St. Stephen's Day Murders has to be heard to be believed). The tunes themselves uphold the Chieftains tradition of excellence, and make an excellent addition to anyone's Christmas music collection. As a matter of fact, I have to say that this CD is so excellent that it is worth listening to at any time of the year. My family and I highly recommend this CD to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Chieftains very best!!!
The Bells of Dublin is by far and away one of the best productions of the Chieftains without a doubt! I listen to it every Christmas(and months in between)for it is suitable for all times of the year. My favorite's include Burgess Meredith and Kevin Conneff in "Don Oiche Ud im Beithel" and "Wren in the Furze". The Chieftains have succeeded in fusing the spirit of the Christmas season with the uplifting and toe-tapping traditions of Ireland! The Bells of Dublin will sit in a place of honor in your own music collection if you decide to add this CD to your favorites! ... Read more

Disney's new carol collection is sure to set sugarplums dancing in future hipsters' heads. All the usual suspects turn up on this jingle-bell best: Hilary Duff's "Santa Claus Lane," familiar to fans from her own Christmas release, gets a springy North Pole remix,Raven-Symone vamps it up Supremes-style on "My Christmas Wish," and Skye Sweetnam and Ashlee Simpson scribble their names on the naughty list courtesy of their contributions--"Why Doesn't Santa Like Me?" and "Christmas Past, Present and Future" respectively. Capping this squeal-and-giggle sleigh ride is a Christmas version of the Disney chestnut "Circle of Life," but if that track prompts peace-on-earth placidity don't expect it to last: Jingle Jams delivers plenty of joy, but stops far short of a silent night. --Tammy La Gorce ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Harmony
While on a business trip about a year ago in Alabama I stopped in an eclectic boutique furniture store and they were playing David Wilson's music. This wondrous music kept me in the store much longer than I had planed on. It was so light and cheerful and somewhat magical sounding. I soon found someone who worked there in the store and I asked if they knew who the music was by. They had supplies of his cd's on the counter. The lady told me that they had so many people ask about the music that they now were selling it. I bought both, "The Romance of Paris" and "There's a Small Hotel."
It is not your typical `easy listening' style of music. It is a little hard for me to explain other than it makes me feel deep down in my soul with a sway and a smile. The harmony is so sweet and swirls around in such a way as to lift you gently and ever so slightly up off your heels and onto your toes.

5-0 out of 5 stars David Wilson,OneOfAKind
Having an appreciation for "easy listening" music, I thought I had heard about the best, until I was enthusiastically introduced to the CD"There's A Small Hotel".

There is no comparison to David Wilson's playing of the violin: a flow and technique so captivating that it compares to reading a good book and not being able to lay it down.He plays the violin with such mastery, as would a fine chef prepare his delicacies.

I am able to play this CD non-stop and never tire of it.It's wonderful to fall asleep listening to this collection of beautiful songs played by David Wilson.

5-0 out of 5 stars C. Palmer
My wife bought this CD on a whim. I assumed it would be like many others that she had purchased and after one play, collected dust. However, it only took one playing until I was hooked. I have never heard a violin "sing" like it does on this CD. It is always on our CD player and we have had many friends hear it and go buy one. We are now ready to buy his other CDs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stars and candlelight
I first heard David Wilson performing live at Il Cielo restaurant in Beverly Hills, many years ago. It was a starlight summer evening, we were dining outdoors, and David strolled from table to table, serenading each couple in the best European tradition. His wonderful violin music added immeasurably to the old-world romance of our dinner, and I ended up buying two copies of "There's a small hotel" on the spot. This CD is highly recommended for lovers of romance and European nostalgia.

5-0 out of 5 stars I thank God for David and his unique and beautiful music.
What a great gift to yourself and for others. When David plays the violin, I hear the beauty of each note, and have a deep sense of peace and delight.I experience his unique sound, and play his CD (on loop cycle) at leastfive days of each week. His CD is also a MUST whenever we have guests. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars O Come O WHITNEY !!!!!!!!
This album is proof that Whitney is on a comeback trail. I enjoyed "Just Whitney" while acknowledging that her voice has transitioned. It's deeper and a bit raspy. Her note-inflections are more provoked than natural. But make no mistake, the girl can still sing her face off. Buy this cd only if you are:

1) into holiday music
2) a music lover who can understand vocal transition

Best cuts on this CD are "O Come, O Come Emmanuel", "One Wish", Deck the Halls/Silent Night" & her soulful take on an otherwise "plain" song (in my opinion) "I'll Be Home For Christmas". "The Little Drummer Boy" is sweet ...with Bobbi Kris.

Not so good cuts are "Have Yourself A Marry Little Christmas" and why she (or they at Arista) included cuts from "The Preacher's Wife", I don't know. But for those of us who bought that particular CD, we feel short-changed.

Overall, good product and a good stocking stuffer!!!!

Peace and Love to you throughou the year!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One Wish---ANSWERED!
This album is so awesome! I simply cannot wait until Whitney releases her next album with Clive Davis. It will be so good! Whitney Houstoun is very beautiful and talented. I just read that she is out of rehab and working on her next album. This is wonderful!

1-0 out of 5 stars At least she didn't Swear
At least she made it threw the 11 Christmas Songs with out swearing.....but it's hard to accept these songs from a woman who can's say 2 words without swearing....Sad

5-0 out of 5 stars A CHRISTMAS MASTERPIECE
WOW! What an album. Whitney you have outdone yourself on this one. Every track, pure perfection, even the two last tracks, which brings me back to the greatness of THE PREACHER'S WIFE Soundtrack. My favorite song on the album is "O Come O Come Emmanuel", which gives you this Take 6 vibe with the throat and choral production. I feel that Whitney's talent is now being overshadowed by her personal problems, and it should not be that way. People have to realize that we are all human and do things that may make us fall off track but with the help of GOD, we can get back on our feet. I still feel that WHITNEY HOUSTON is the one of the most legendary divas in the industry. Hey so what she made her mistakes, EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET OVER IT and get back to the real reason she was put here, FOR US TO HEAR HER SING, NOT TO PRY INTO HER PERSONAL LIFE. I feel that's no one's business but hers and GOD's. STAY UP WHITNEY! YOUR TRUE FANS STILL LOVE YOU! ... Read more

Leave it to a coupe of quirky Arkansas buskers preoccupied with all things snowy to deliver a uniquely hatched collection of original Christmas songs. Ezra Idlet and Keith Grimwood have made a name with a family brand of entertainment that combines humor, harmony and imagination. There's plenty of each on Merry Fishes to All, but this is truly a record wrapped with the kids in mind. Surveying the seasonal landscape, the flaky duo sizes up the disappointments of getting clothes for Christmas, having a birthday on December 25, and getting a Cheese Log! In between there's a whacky reworking of a classic called "The Eleven Cats of Christmas" and some simply lovely songs even a hardened old Scrooge could love, including "Snow Is Falling"and "You Got to Get Up," the enchanted desperate plea of every kid who ever burst from bed Christmas morning before sunrise. There's only a couple limp lines drifting off here, but overall the fish are jumpin' and Santa approves. --Martin Keller ... Read more
