You might remember this flashy a cappella group from their five-year stint on the award-winning PBS program Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? or from their jazzy Folger's coffee commercials. This time, they apply their considerable talents to Christmas music, releasing their second album of holiday cheer. New bass singer George Baldi helps the group breathe new life into old favorites like "I'll Be Home for Christmas," "Home for the Holidays," and "Rocking Around the Christmas Tree"; the vocal arrangements are marked throughout by crisp rhythms, precise harmonies, and witty phrasing. Stretching out beyond doo-wop, they mimic a brass band and Elvis Presley on "Please Come Home for Christmas." And they have some fun with the boy-band movement on the gorgeous "Love and Lights." Although not associated with Christmas, their reggae version of Disney's "Small World" is a charming highlight. --Jaan Uhelszki ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best group for Christmas music!
OK, I am a big fan of Rockapella. But they consistently release CDs with music of exceptional quality and entertainment value. Their holiday CD from 2000 has been my favorite for the last 2 years. Now it will at least be a toss up.

Scott Leonard has several original songs on this one. Little Mary Snowflake is a fun tune, as is This Christmas Day and Snowstar. Surprisingly, none are along the same lines as previous Leonard Xmas originals, which have tended to be slower and more intimate. These are more peppy, just what you'd expect now from Jiffy Pop!

How great to find original tunes from Kevin Wright (Love and the Lights) and Jeff Thacher (Peace on Earth)! Both deserve to take their place as holiday classics. Combined with Kevin's angelic voice, they are perfect to listen to on a cold winter's night.

Those songs that get covered by everybody still sound unique when done by Rockapella. Their signature treatment (many layered vocals and Jeff's amazing percussion) makes each song their own. Even if you have a prior CD with one of these, they always manage to make the song new and different. And too cool to find a cover of Merry Christmas Darling, one of my favorite (Richard) Carpenter holiday songs. For a showcase of new bass George Baldi, try track number 5 - I'll Be Home for Christmas. Yay George! For the finale, Scott lets his Disney past show with a rendition of It's a Small World, but it just sounds to great to be corny.

Definitely a CD to have on hand for all your holiday celebrations. I need to get more copies so I do not have to keep dragging it back and forth between work, home and the car!

3-0 out of 5 stars Diehard somewhat disappointed
Ah, the first album with all bass comepletely done with George. Now that I've heard the album all the way through I have a few things to say. First, George isn't HORRIBLE. He's got potential, however I just feel his technique doesn't fit in with the group. The bass in most of the songs is just way too thumpy and distracting IMO. It just doesn't give the music the strong backbone that it needs, and once had with Barry. One song he does decently on is Peace on Earth. The rest, I just don't feel he blends with the group. He has muych more of a Boys 2 Men sound than he does a Rockapella sound. This all surprises me because I thought he blended very well on Here Comes the Sun and after hearing that, I had high hopes.
As for the rest of the CD, It has its high points and a couple low points.
Up until now, I've never actually disliked a Rockapella song so much that I couldn't bear to listen to it, and was embarassed to let others hear it. That's all changed with Kevin's rendition of "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." First off, the arrangement is pure cheese. Secondly, Kevin doen NOT have the right voice for this song. Another low point is the "snowowowowow" repetitions in Snowstar. I feel this song could have been one of the strongest tracks on the album, if it weren't for those parts.
On "I'll be Home For Chrismas," bassist George almost sounds like a lounge singer or something. His voice is just too smooth and again, sounds better suited for Take 6 or B2M than he does Rockapella. His voice doesn't convey much personality on this song either, leaving the vocals sounding very stiff. However, the intro to this song is some of the most beautiful harmony the group has *ever* done.

I did enjoy Love and Lights, Peace on Earth, Merry Christmas Darling, and Please Come Home For Christmas the most. Kevin and Jeff did wonderful jobs on Love and Lights and Peace on Earth, respectively. Merry Christmas Darling is beautiful and rich, definitely one of brightest points of the disc. Same with Peace on Earth, Jeff's contribution. This Christmas Day is a decent song, as is Little Mary Snowflake (which has a part that bears a striking resemblence to the "Legends of my youth" line in their song "All That Comes to Mind.)
While their arrangement of the song sounds decent, "Its a Small World" has nothing to do with Christmas and doesn't fit with their rest of the album. They definitely could have stuck another track on the album in place of that one. Also, I didn't really see the point in recording "Home For the Holidays" again, especially since the arrangement is IDENTICAL to the BASH version, right down to the horn solo.
Overall, I'd give this CD three stars out of five, due to the bass work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Christmas Music
This is the classic work of Rockapella for all those who know and love their music. However, it is not the best work that they done. I still prefer their album "Christmas" during the holidays. George Baldi's voice is very smooth and melodious, but I think that it will take more time for him to be truly integrated with their unique style. It does have a different sound than their previous work, but their origional songs such as "Little Mary Snowflake", "Love and the Lights" and "This Christmas Day" keeps with their tradition of wonderful music. It is fun to listen to and gets you in the Christmas spirit.

2-0 out of 5 stars Another cheesefest
Stop it, please. Please stop making these albums so full of cheesy adlibs and little snips of kids gurgling. Yes, the kids are cute. Yes, it was neat to hear one of the group members' kids on Hope We Hold on the last Christmas album. But the same process was done in Smilin' and this latest disappointment, Comfort and Joy. The kiddies just begin to lose their charm and become annoying the sixth, seventh, and eighth song around.

Reader, if you are not a fan of the group, do not buy this album. If you are a fan of this group, just get recordings of the three good songs on the CD from someone else and add them as bonus tracks to the original Christmas album. These songs made me save the album from a direct deposit into the garbage can and saved this CD from getting a one-star review. They are: Little Mary Snowflake, This Christmas Day, and the incredible Merry Christmas Darling. These three songs were wonderful.

The other tracks put me in an anti-Christmas mood. George's solo on I'll Be Home for Christmas was not cool--too much scooping that is usually reserved for country singers. Blech. Love and the Lights made me embarrassed. Home for the Holidays? I almost laughed out loud when I heard the trombocal solo in the middle of the song. Never before have I heard something that seemed so out of place and poorly executed from a professional a cappella group. Please Come Home for Christmas has a terrible ad lib in the middle of it that prevents me from letting anyone listen to the song. Please save the Elvis impersonations for live shows. Rockin' Around the Christmas tree is as bad as some of the other reviewers have already mentioned. Snowstar had a chance to be great. But the background, "Sno-ow, Sno-ow, Sno-oh-ow" is very grating on the ears and is unfortunately repeated incessantly throughout the entire song. The middle of the song gets very cool again with the change of pace that has an ethereal quality to it; I especially liked the soft high tenor part in the background. Then the song goes back to its grating ways. Peace on Earth was not very good, and then we get to a song typical of the latest Rockapella style, It's a Small World--a song that is out of place, cheesy, and involves the repetitive usage of recorded bits from their children.

I miss the days of Don't Tell Me You Do, 2, and Christmas. The latest albums from the group have been an extreme disappointment, and I have a feeling the trend will not stop.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best, but still good
I am such a HUGE Rockapella fan (going back to version 1.0 - Sean, Steve, El, and Barry), that I eagerly awaited both this album and Smilin'. Having seen the guys live with George in Barry's role (you can't say "taking Barry's place"), I really wanted to hear this CD. I will admit that I was a little disappointed overall. Too few classic tracks and some unnecessary adlibs or dubbing or something on a couple of the tracks left me feeling like it was in my collection just so that I could say it was complete.
Now that's not to say there isn't good music here. "Little Mary Snowflake" is truly awesome, and Scott and Jeff do masterful jobs at writing the original tracks. It just seems that something was missing from this one and I'm really not sure what it is. ... Read more

Amazon.com essential recording

Kenny G's 1994 album of economically arranged standards, which also happens to include Brahms's "Lullaby" and his own "The Chanukah Song," pales in comparison to his other holiday record, the highly creative and memorable Faith. That said, Miracles will appeal to some for its easy (some would say lazy) jazz renderings on G's soprano horn. The most inventive thing on the CD is a witty reading of "Greensleeves" wedded to Dave Brubeck's "Take 5." For sheer commercial appeal and enough romantic notes to keep the fireside roaring, Kenny G will make a good Santa for his many, many fans. --Martin Keller ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FILLS YOU UP WITH THE TRUE MEANING OF CHRISTMAS!
A wonderful CD! I live in the tropics with sunshine and beaches all year round. So it is very hard to imagine a Winter Wonderland, but thanks to this CD, one can get into the magical Christmas Spirit right away. Kenny G has mastered the art of conveying that warm and beautiful feeling of Christmas through his music ~ definitely a Christmas CD that must be added to your Christmas Collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
I'd really give this CD 3 1/2 stars. It had the potential for being a great CD, but Kenny fell just a little short. In his attempt to make the holiday songs "unique" and his "own interpretation," he lost some of the traditional beauty of the songs. This is especially evident in songs like "White Christmas," "Winter Wonderland," and "Away in the Manger." However, many of the tracks are good. "Silent Night," "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," an up-tempo version of "Greensleeves," and "Silver Bells" are all very enjoyable songs. Kenny offers two original songs on this disk - "Miracles (very pretty song) and "The Chanukah Song." The CD ends with a pretty rendition of "Brahm's Lullaby," even though that is not necessarily a holiday song.

It could have been better, but it's still solid. It'll get some play in your CD box.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings Me To Tears...
This is without a doubt The Greatest Record Of All Time...

5-0 out of 5 stars Kenny G's Best Christmas CD!
I own all of Kenny G's Christmas CD's and this, his first, is by far his best! The original recordings of Miracles and The Chanukah Song are wonderful, as are all the old Christmas standards like White Christmas. That's Kennys' son on the cover of the CD with him, and Miracles was written with him in mind...what a beautiful tribute from a marvelous talent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, Calming Christmas CD
All the tracks on this CD are beautiful and very calming. Essentially, you can "feel" yourself sitting in a darkened room before a crackling fire while snow falls outside. Of the 11 tracks, I've rated six of them as Very Good, four of them as Good, and only one as merely OK (I use Media Player's five star rating system where two stars (not three stars) is OK). My specific track ratings are:

1. Winter Wonderland -- 4 Stars
2. White Christmas -- 4 Stars
3. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas -- 4 Stars
4. Silent Night -- 3 Stars
5. Greensleeves -- 4 Stars
6. Miracles -- 3 Stars
7. Little Drummer Boy -- 3 Stars

2-0 out of 5 stars It's either Been There Done That or Never Wanted to Do That!
We had this CD on in our store during the holiday shopping season this year...unfortunately. Either the stuff on here could be found elsewhere and plenty of elsewheres (ie. "Christmas Wrapping" by the Waitresses, though that's one of the few HIGH points on this disc), many of the songs on this disc are headache enducing. Why, oh why, did anyone let the version of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Tom Jones and some chick whose name I never bothered to learn out of the studio? It's horrible. We would race to the CD player to skip that one and plenty of others.

3-0 out of 5 stars Its an ok cd
Some of the songs are wonderful but I could do without Destiny's Child and B2K doing their renditions of some old classics. Good thing there is a fast forward button on the cd player. I LOVE the classic songs sung by Andy Williams, Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, etc. It does have a good variety of music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another great collection of Holiday hits.
This is another great release of Christmas music by the Now! producers. I assume they had no original plans to release a second volume of "Now That's What I Call Christmas!", or didn't expect the phenomenal success they got with the first, because a lot of songs on each collection could have been omitted and/or combined to make THE definitive Christmas collection, without the filler.

The one song that is absolutely horrendous and almost single-handedly drags the album's rating all the way down to three stars, is B2K's "Santa Claus is Coming to Town". Matter of fact, I couldn't even finish listening to that track after about 6 "yo's", "hey's", "wassup's" and the like right at the beginning. Nothing against their style of music, I just personally wouldn't regularly listen to it, and it is certainly not Christmas-friendly in this case. If these guys just had to be used, like another reviewer said, it should have been at a point on the disc where you could skip past it. At the very least, they should have done an original instead of mangling a classic. I doubt they're that talented to come up with something new in terms of holiday music, though. Evidently, the Jackson 5 version, although beyond superior, wouldn't have been "appropriate" with the controversies currently surrounding Michael in the news. Manhattan Transfer does a great rendition that they could have gone with here and Bruce Springsteen has a stellar version available on the first volume also that could have been used again if necessary.

Notable omissions this time around include versions of "O Holy Night" by Josh Groban and/or John Berry, which could have replaced the Celine Dion version used, "Hey Santa!" by Carnie and Wendy Wilson along with "Jingle Bell Rock" by Hall and Oates, and Gayla Peevey's "Hippopotamus Song". Maybe for Volume 3!

Highlights: The classics such as "Step into Christmas" by Elton John, "Rudolph..." by Burl Ives, and tracks by Christmas mainstays like Andy Williams and Johnny Mathis speak for themselves, of course, and Kylie Minogue does such a brilliant rework of "Santa Baby", you barely think it's a remake. Nothing beats the original, but this is one "sequel" that comes close. Happy Holidays! ... Read more

This time out, Baby Einstein shines a light on the Christmas tree andpromises peace in the nursery, if not on earth. Familiar carols like"Jingle Bells," "Silent Night," and "Joy to the World" undergo theexpected twinkly xylophone treatment, but a clutch of others getswept off to the Caribbean (the steel drum-studded "Twelve Days ofChristmas"), the plains of Africa (the earthy, percussive "We Wish You aMerry Christmas"), and additional exotic locales. Afteryuletide stopoffs in France, Japan, and Germany, the "Holiday Concert" part of the disc takes over, featuring brainier but still festive selections fromBach, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky. This mid-CD switchoverbarely registers--each of the 28 mini-tracks (most average a minute anda half) does its part to stir visions of sugarplums and furthers thepossibility of a truly silent night for the Santa's-lap set. --Tammy LaGorce ... Leave it to Rhino Records to come up with the best party music for Halloween rave-ups. In contrast to New Wave Halloween, this set of 10 tunes is aimed squarely at the family listening environment. "Monster Mash," sung by Bobby Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers, is a hoot decades after its origin. And Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put a Spell on You" is aptly eerie, if not a tad funny in this setting--considering that "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" comes after and the Addams Family theme comes before. And lest you think this set of tunes is mired in the depths of Halloween tunes from generations ago, it also has "Ghostbusters"--which reeks of datedness anywhere but here. --Andrew Bartlett ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Halloween Hits
This is a wonderful CD for the family. My young children love it and we spent lots of time dancing to it. We even listened to it at my child's kindergarten Halloween party. It was a big hit. Unlike many of the Halloween CDs today this one is not frightening. It is fun and upbeat. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A CD every Hallowmaniac should have.
This is a wonderful CD! It's packed with such greats as the Monster Mash, Purple People Eater, and some lesser-knowns like the Martian Hop! Much better than those other "Halloween Hit" CDs. Ultimately, add this one to your collection now!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fairly Solid Halloween Holiday Music.
I originally discovered this album several years ago while working on the children's radio program I used to dj and produce. I really enjoyed listening to the music, but had to leave the cds behind when I left the show after moving out of the city. Now that I currently am back on the air with an internet radio show, I've been looking around for some good quality Halloween music to play on my new show. There really isn't much out there. A lot of the Halloween cds you buy are compliations of songs rearranged by different artists or studio groups. That's not the case with HALLOWEEN HITS. There are only 10 songs on the album, but they are all sung by the original artists. Some of them are Halloween favorites, such as "Monster Mash" and "Ghostbusters" while others are related to frightening/scary/monster themes and shows, such as the "Addam's Family Theme" and "The Twilight Zone Theme". It would be nice if this cd had a few more tunes on it, but for less than $10, it's basically a bargain. A good cd to play at Halloween.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Halloween Music Ever !!!
This is the best Halloween compilation ever. If you're loking for your party music , this is it!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Monster Mash, Killer Tomatoes and a Purple People Eater
Proposition: "Monster Mash" is to Halloween parties what "Rock and Roll, Part II" is to time-outs at basketball games. The only real complain with "Halloween Hits" is that there are ten of them, but you would be hard pressed to name another song off the top of your head that should be on this album. I had to think for a couple of minutes before I could come up with anything ("Werewolves of London") and I have been listening to Halloween music all day. I mean, to be honest, Sheb Wooley's "Purple People Eater" is not a "Halloween" song, and the same goes for "Martian Hop." If anybody out there wants to write new Halloween songs for the 21st century, then go ahead because there is space available. Hearing Screamin' Jim Hawkins do "I Put a Spell on You" is always a treat (he was the proto-Alice Cooper you know) but this album gets bonus points for doing the theme song from that cult classic "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" ("I know I'm going to miss her, a tomato ate my sister..."). Four other tracks come courtesy of the movies ("Ghostbusters" and "The Blob" ) and television ("The Twilight Zone" and "The Addams Family"). (Oh, the theme from "Halloween," or even the souped up version John Carpenter did for "Halloween II.") "Halloween Hits" is certainly a decent enough collection for only ten tracks and provides the yearly song requirements for this secular holiday. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jethro Tulls Christmas Songs from the past and more
Being my all time fav band, this has to be the best tull since Crest!!!!! This is not a traditional xmas album in the sense of pop standards but a very unique beautiful Holiday cd!!!!

I will not get into each tune but some rmakes are included from the past including Bouree, A Christmas Song, Weatherock, Another Christmas Song, Ring out Soltice Bells, Bouree and Fires at Midnight!!!!! some are not traditional xmas songs but fit the spirit of the Holiday season. Season favs include God Rest, We 5 Kings, and a twist on Holly Herald. New great tunes withg a christmas edge are Jack Frost, Pavane, First Snow and A Winter Sounscape!!!! The sound of this JTull cd is similar of Songs from the Woods and Heavy Horses and is more on the acoustic side then the electric side but Martin plays just wonderful!!!!! If you are a Tull fan, u need this being the best one in a while. The best thing is that this album can be played at any time, not just around the holidays!!!! There are several cool instrumentals but most with vocals, Bouree, Solstice, Christmans Song and Another Christmas Song are great new remixes and new great tunes include Jack Frost and First Snow. This is a definate Tull album and JTull is back in bloom again. This is a great christmas album in the sense where u do not get all the rehashed xmas songs on every artist's christmas album!!!! This is just beautiful and essential. Then get Ian's Rupi's Dance which is in the same vein and a more acoustic based album. Without any doubts, the best christmas album of the year, so Celebrate and celebrate often with this holiday extravaganza!!!!! If you have any Tull albums, you need this on, NOW

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy Holidays From Jethro Tull
The holidays have gotten even brighter with Jethro Tull's marvelous offering for this time of year, "The Jethro Tull Christmas Album." Ian Anderson & company serve up a hearty yuletide blend of new Tull Christmas originals, including the terrific "Birthday Card At Christmas," "Last Man At The Party," and "First Snow On Brooklyn," as well as new re-recordings of old holiday-themed Tull favorites like "A Christmas Song," "Another Christmas Song," "Ring Out Solstice Bells," and the signature Tull tune, "Bouree." Along with that classic instrumental, the band give us some more wonderful instrumental tracks, like the brilliant jazz take on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "Pavane," "Greensleeved," and the beautiful closer, "A Winter Snowscape." The band play brilliantly, and Anderson's voice and flute are still in pristine form. "The Jethro Tull Christmas Album" is a magnificent gift from one of rock's most enduring acts. Happy holidays from Jethro Tull!

4-0 out of 5 stars Christmas With Tull
I don't see why some reviewers feel there's a lack of energy here, but then I haven't gone back and compared these song versions with previous ones. All I know is I haven't cared too much for some of the more recent Tull albums, but thought I'd give this one a chance. I was very pleased with the whole album. I've heard a couple of the tunes before, like "Solstice Bells" and "Bouree". "Bouree" is definitely a remake. Can't say it's better than the original but it's definitely no worse. Jethro Tull, to me, is unique in the rock genre for the skillful blending of old and new. It's rock with folk undertones, and Ian Anderson's gift for songwriting and arranging is unparalleled (catch "Greensleeved" and "We Five Kings"). I've got friends who won't give Tull a listen because they claim flute has no place in rock music. But Tull is not the typical rock group, and they don't know what they're missing. The whole album is enjoyable listening even if you're not into Christmas music. Even without the holiday theme, the songs are strong and melodic in their own right. Highlights are "Another Christmas Song" and the incredible instrumental "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen".

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit disapointing
Mostly new material is pretty lousy. The only song before this was "A Christmas Song",which isn't that exicting either. This is for diehards. I'd guess I am, but I was overall disapointed with this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tull with no ROCK, wots up?
On 1st listen, I considered this album a bit flat, a bit jaded as it were, compared to other Tull offerings. Why. Took me a few listens to figure it out. No driving classic Barre rock guitar!. This would be the first Tull album that has not generated excitement on first listening. I had to listen hard for the normal Anderson/Barre guitar/flute interplay that is expected of Tull, and it just does not exist. After a few more listens, the guitar is tastefull & understated.

This is more like an Anderson solo album rather than Tull. Maybe, as indicated in the sleeve notes, it was the way it was recorded. Band members were not present, and recorded around Ian's pre-recorded ideas. Ian did the final mixing.

The re-recorded songs just don't seem to have any sparkle compared to the originals. This is a shame, because Tull have done it before & did it well. Just listen to "The Beacons Bottom" tapes from the 25th Anniversary Set. This songs are brilliant re-records of the originals & stand up well in there own right.

Bouree, great tune, but why keep on dragging the old carcus up?

The album needs to be taken for what it is, a celebration of christmas, & not an album of classic Tull rock/folk type stuff. As usaull, the muciscanship is superb, but could Anderson finally be getting a tad stale? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So beautiful I cried
I serendipitously stumbled across this British import version of the CD with the Caroling Medley, which is missing from the US version. This was one of my favorite Christmas albums when I was younger.

When I put it in my CD player, of course I had to start with the Caroling Medley, with its distinctive acapella harmonies. It was so beautiful, exactly as I remembered, that I cried. How moving for me to have this part of my happy Christmas memories made fresh, and how wonderful that I can now share it with my daughter and my own family.

It's beautiful.

Oh, and for the other stuff: sound is clear and sharp. Graphics are mostly nonexistent, text is small and hard to read, but it's the sound that matters, and that's Osmond-perfect as always.

Now if they'll only release a version with ALL of the songs....

5-0 out of 5 stars MARIE IS THE BEST ON THIS ALBUM
THIS ALBUM IS GOOD AN COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER IF MARIE SANG MORE...AS FOR THE PERSON WHO SAID MARIE IS SO-SO...YOU NEED HELP!!!!! IF IT WERE NOT FOR MARIE ...WELL I WONT EVEN SAY IT CAUSE I LOVE THE OSMONDS AS A WHOLE..BUT YOU STILL NEED HELP..ALL OTHER BUY THIS CD..ITS WORTH EVERY PENNY!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone
This is one of the best Christmas Albums ever made! The Osmond Familys' harmonies are so smooth!
The Con: I guess I would have to say that Marie Osmonds' "Let it Snow" is so-so and there have been changes made to this CD. In the original album, Marie didn't sing with the Brothers on "Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells". It was Donny who sang the solo parts. Marie does not sing as well as Donny, and it was a disappointment to hear her sing Donny's part of the CD. I am sure Marie pushed for that, but someone should have left well enough alone. Funny enough, they left "Silver Bells" as is, with Marie singing the song when she was 19, rather than the updated Marie voice (in her 30's)used for updating the "Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells" song. Jimmy's song "I wonder when He comes again" was removed for the CD, but they left "It never snows in L.A." and "If Santa were my Daddy" in. Silent Night is just so precious, and my favorite is the Christmas Waltz song--just touching and superb! Overall I believe this is the greatest Family Holiday CD, and it really does capture the spirit of Christmas. Gift someone with this CD, and they will thank you and think of you for years! Or, just buy it for yourself, and you won't be dissapointed. Not unless you're into rap... ..

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Christmas CD's on the planet!!!
A wonderful Christmas CD this is. 18 of the 20 songs from their 1976 vinyl album. The USA CD version which came out in 1991 only had 12 of the 20 songs. This import 2001, is missing 2 songs, but if you have the US version of the CD then you will have "The Christmas Waltz" song, which is not on this import CD. Now we need one more song "A Very Merry Christmas". I suppose in 2011 we may get a CD with all 20 songs. But, enjoy this CD it is great. It has the only 3 songs that the Osmonds (A, W, M) wrote on the vinyl album. The 3 songs are "Sleigh Ride" an upbeat song (my favorite), "An Old Fashioned Christmas" sung by Donny-I know Donny's voice, even though the CD says the Osmonds sing it, and "It Never Snows In L.A." one of little Jimmy's best. The CD doesn't give credit to the writers of the songs, but if you have the old vinyl album you will see which songs the Osmonds wrote. You will not be disappointed. You will treasure it for the memories it brings back. GO, GO, GO, GO, OSMONDS!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
My daughter loves this CD, and listening to it was the only way she would tolerate riding in the car... until we got another Raffi CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for the holidays!
This has some great holiday songs, but I think Raffi should have a Chanukah album or a Kwanzaa album for people who don't even celebrate Christmas. And the song, "Comin' Down the Chimney" should have been on this album as opposed to the More Singable Songs album because the song is obviously about Santa Claus.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 years running
This is our favorite Christmas CD for five years running. Both of my girls love it and know all the songs by heart. My favorite song is "must be Santa" which has the beautiful voice of children singing the chorus. My oldest daughter loves Petit papa Noel. If you love Raffi you will love this CD, if you find some of Raffi's music overboard or obnoxious (bananphone maybe) you will still like this CD, it is toned down of his typical silly kiddie CDs and filled with more beautiful classic Christmas songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of our family favorites
We bought Raffi's tape for our daughters years ago, but I think my husband and I enjoyed Raffi and his Christmas selections as much as the girls... This year, I bought the CD for my oldest daughters who's in college, just to bring back memories of our music-filled Christmases at home. Beautiful voice. And his rendition of Petit Papa Noel brings tears to my eyes. So glad it's available in CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant Holiday Songs

Following the 1999 success of her CD single of "The Christmas Song," Linda Eder delivers a full-length holiday album that will please her fans for years to come. No surprise that the program includes a hard swinger ("Here Comes Santa Claus/Santa Claus Is Coming to Town") and a gorgeous Judy Garland cover ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"), but "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and "O Holy Night" sizzle with a gospel choir, and she adds a lovely descant to "Silent Night." Her "Christmas Song" performance is reprised here, and a medley combines the very familiar "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Let It Snow" with the too seldom heard "Silver and Gold." And of course no Eder album would be complete without songs from husband Frank Wildhorn. In addition to the pleasant title track and "The Bells of St. Paul," "Christmas Through a Child's Eyes" features a lyric by Eder herself, written for their young son. --David Horiuchi ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CHRISTMAS COMES EARLY WITH LINDA!!
Probably one of the last things the world needs is another slew of new Christmas albums, especially when most get released and quickly forgotten. How many holiday CDs have you bought in recent years that still get pulled out and played year after year like a Nat King Cole or Phil Spector Christmas album? Enter this new one from Linda Eder to add to that short list.

She is still one of the best kept secrets in music. However, if you have any of her other CDs you already have a clue that this will also be one to treasure. The album sports two new holiday gems co-written by Linda and her husband and musical partner, Frank Wildhorn - "Christmas Stays the Same" and "Christmas Through a Child's Eyes" There are many classics as well, including "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and "Little Drummer Boy" sounding remarkabley fresh even though we have these songs hundreds of times. "Silent Night" featuring glorious back-up from the Broadway Gospel Choir comes across very inspired and original. "Here Comes Santa Claus" and "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" are combined into a sassy, brassy medley that would have done Frank Sinatra proud. She also gives "O Holy Night" and "The Bells of St. Paul" (maybe the best track on this CD) her trademark soaring vocals that will give you goose bumps.

Linda's incredible voice, the terrific arrangements, musicianship and the excellent support from the Broadway Gospel Choir may have you wanting to pull this CD out and play it come July!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Christmas Album . . . EVER!
Linda Eder's is the definitive Christmas album. She has such a soulful voice, particularly on this recording. From the moment she begins, with the warm title track, you are swept into a seasonal masterpiece. Following the first song, "Here Comes Santa Claus/Santa Claus is Coming to Town" is a wonderful swing/big-band song with powerful vocals. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is delicate at first, but ends strongly with powerful, belted notes. The fantastic percussive rhythm of "Little Drummer Boy" is addictive, and the lyric is wonderfully done by Eder. "Do You Hear What I Hear?" is also great, and the last chorus is rousing as the choir backs up Eder's flowing and majestic voice. The lyrics of "Christmas Through a Child's Eyes" was written by Eder for her son, Jake, and it is touching. "Silent Night", though almost unrecognizable as Eder lends her extremely high aria in the middle, is achingly beautiful. "What Child is This?" is done very religously, and with deep male voices chanting "O Come O Come Emmanuel" in the background. "The Christmas Song" identical to the single version, is light and crisp with a simple piano accompaniment. "The Christmas Medley" is another jazzy, big band number with a trio of holiday carols. "Ave Maria" is unbelievably holy-sounding, and Eder's soprano voice comes out clear and angel-like throughout the beautiful litling melody of the song. "O Holy Night" is a song that always gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, so naturally with Eder's spine-tingling voice, I was goosebumped away by her powerful, tear-jerking rendition of the gorgeous song. "The Bells of St. Paul," though a little on the non-Christmas like side of the Christmas song spectrum, is a very, VERY beautiful song with an amazing vocal by Eder. If your a fan of Linda Eder, Christmas music, or both your would be insane not to buy this CD. It is simply the best Christmas album by anyone in the entire world ever!

3-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Stays the Same
I purchased this CD because I heard the song "Do you hear what I hear" and loved it. The African beat was a very nice change. Unfortuantely none of the other music on the CD is as original as that song. Her music is beautiful but I was expecting something much better.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you like Linda, you want this. Otherwise....
Linda Eder is one of the great vocalists of our time. Unfortunately, her Christmas album is on the mediocre list. Sadly, someone on her team tries too hard to make her sound like a pop princess, and the background vocals and bands often get in the way of allowing the listener to really hear and enjoy Linda's amazing voice. (This is my complaint on many of her albums.)

I agree with other reviewers that the new songs are ho-hum, and would add that her rendition of "The Christmas Song" is much too similar to Barbra Streisand's; however, there are some nice recordings here, too.

Overall, if you like Linda Eder, you'll probably want this album. If you've never heard Linda before, try "It's No Secret Anymore" instead :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite good, except for the original songs
This CD is a very entertaining Christmas album. Not too contemporary, but not too old sounding either! The addition of the Broadway Gospel Choir frankly makes this album, and Linda Eder's voice fits in quie well, even though she's about as far from gospel as you can get without crossing into opera.

My complaint about this CD is the original songs, particularly "Christmas Stays the Same" and "Through A Child's Eyes." These songs are pretty mediocre. They're not atrocious, but I always skip through them when I listen to the CD. "The Bells of St. Paul," however, is a nice piece. ... Read more

Dan Fogelberg's first Christmas album is a smartly informed collection of familiar holiday hymns, carols, and deliciously original music inspired by the Renaissance period. The standard interpretations such as "I Saw Three Ships" and "O Tannenbaum" prove satisfying and enjoyable. "At Christmas Time," a Fogelberg original, sounds as if it were lifted from Dickens's A Christmas Carol, while the peaceful and bright "Winterskol" and other simple guitar pieces make The First Christmas Morning a truly great holiday find. Extra points to Fogelberg for unearthing such beautiful music as the 15th-century carol "This Endris Night." Recommended.--Martin Keller ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Christmas CD is uneven -some good and some bad
I've been a huge fan of Dan Fogelberg for a couple decades, so I was looking forward to the release of this CD. I'm disappointed. It's uneven to me--some of it is good and some is bad.

The good: All the instrumentals, the title track, This Endris Night, In The Bleak Midwinter and What Child Is This? My favorite instrumental is Snowfall.

The bad: Packaging--I agree with the other reviewer that the cover art is amateurish and I would have liked to have seen some of Dan's REAL art on the cover. This tells me there wasn't much in the budget for something better--or it wasn't all that important to him since he is taking partial credit for it. Also, I noticed a few errors--there is no track 15 even though musicians are being credited for that track number. This is another sign of amateurism and haste. The liner notes are fine but the picture by the fireplace is the worst photograph I have ever seen of him.

The music: The intro piece isn't even Dan so it seems out of place--more like filler. I'd have liked a great musical intro like he has done on many of his other albums such as Wild Places or Captured Angel.

He can still hit the high notes but why do it? His voice sounds much better when it doesn't sound unnatural and strained like that.

But the worst of this has to be O Tannenbaum. The sound volume is very low and must be turned up to hear it--and I don't care if that makes it like an "old" recording it's just a pain to have to go and turn it up and then turn it down again--and it made it sound sloppy to me. None of my classical albums have to be turned up to hear and they are definately authentic to their eras. The autoharp is boring--but it did bring to mind my first grade teacher! --and those high notes made me wince.

I will play this one during the holidays because the good stuff is a joy to hear--but I'm glad I can set my player to program the ones I want to hear. It's too bad that such a talented artist as Dan could give us something that doesn't shine from start to finish. I'm surprised that the other reviews are so good--maybe the anticipation was so great for everyone that most people can't allow themselves to feel let down.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Christmas CD
I have to admit I have loved the music of Dan Fogelberg since I first heard the album "Netherlands" in 1977, so maybe I'm partial, but I've listened to Dan's new CD twice now, and I know it is my favorite Christmas CD. I have collected so many, trying to capture the special feeling of my youth when Christmas was near. Dan's beautiful voice and wonderful orchestration is perfect for this type of work. He's brought it all back! Reading the other reviews, I can only echo their sentiments and add that I love every song on this CD. I somehow knew, but never really thought about the fact, that the English Medieval and Baroque times in music and film are among my favorites. This is such a treat for me, because I treasure this artist's music. In my opinion, he is the most gifted in his field, and everytime he comes out with something new, I am amazed that I love it more than the last thing he released. The songs that I seem to enjoy the most are Dan's compositions, proving to me that he is the most talented song writer of his time. I hope you all enjoy this music as much as I do!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Strong Addition to the Christmas Rotation!
I've been listening to Dan Fogelberg since the early 70's and seen him in concert many, many times. I agree with a lot of reviewers that sometime after "The Innocent Age" Fogelberg went way too pop, and lost me. However, I became interested in this cd after reading all the reviews - I love Christmas music and I enjoy listening to music that celebrates Jesus Christ all year 'round. Certainly, looking at the reviews, people seem to feel strongly about this cd, one way or the other. If you enjoy a variety of Christmas music, are interested in Medieval/Baroque/Renaissance style music, or if you just want a Christmas cd that celebrates the Birth of Christ, I suggest you buy this one. I can't understand why some long-standing Fogelberg fans are so hard on this one - unless they just don't like the Medieval theme, or they're uncomfortable with Fogelberg singing about Christ and Christmas.

Some reviewers have a hard time with the opening cut, some mentioning they're disappointed that Fogelberg himself doesn't sing it. I say, "So what?" The whole point of music is to convey a message - the artist is simply the conduit. This cd celebrates Christmas - Fogelberg is letting that take first place. The piece itself is well done as a choral number, and the bells "work" for me. "At Christmas Time" feels a little rushed to me, like he's running out of breath. I would like to have seen Fogelberg do it as a duet with someone, rather than take both 'parts'. He sounds like he's being stretched vocally (though elsewhere on the cd he sounds as good as ever), and it's a little uncomfortable to listen to, though I like the idea musically and I think the lyrics are good.

"Winterskol" is clearly a standout instrumental, and it reminded me of so much of Fogelberg's early stuff. "Snowfall" is good, too. "Feast of Fools" and "Yule Dance" are fine, if you can appreciate what Fogelberg is trying to do (and I can), which is to evoke a certain musical period. Even if you're not totally caught up in that effort, they still make nice instrumentals to listen to while you're decorating the tree or enjoying some egg nog while sitting in front of the fire after a long day shopping at the mall!

"The First Christmas Morning" and "Christ the King" are great original songs which clearly celebrate the Christ of Christmas but in classic Fogelberg style - I can only say "Well Done!" here. A lot of "Contemporary Christian" artists have failed to deliver such a clear message. "This Endris Night" is beautiful, and Fogelberg sounds great doing it - it could've been his own song. I appreciate the fact that with the non-original cuts on the cd, Fogelberg dug deep. Not that I don't appreciate songs like "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree", but they've been done to death! He delivers "I Saw Three Ships" and "We Three Kings" well, helping me to appreciate a couple traditional songs that have previously always left me cold. "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "What Child Is This?" are a joy to listen to here. I wasn't surprised - Fogelberg is great with this type of song - he's got the voice for them.

"O Tannenbaum" was a disappointment to me. I agree with some other reviewers about the problems - it sounds like Fogelberg is straining to reach for the high notes (I guess he was a lot younger when he did 'Netherlands'?), the whole "half volume, going for the dated feel" is more frustrating than successful, and even Fogelberg can't quite pull off the autoharp thing. I was mostly disappointed because I think, with his talent, he could have done something so much better. Oh well! It doesn't ruin the cd for me, and for most people, it's just a matter of hitting 'skip' or pre-programming that one out of the sequence.

Overall, I was pleased with the cd, and I'm sure it will enjoy its turn in the season's rotation for many years to come!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally - Christ is back in Christmas
I happened to be out shopping when I heard one of the songs on this CD being played over the speakers, and was blown away by Dan Fogelburg singing a Christmas tune. I grabbed the nearest clerk and had them lead me to it. It has been my favorite Christmas CD ever since. It has a beautiful Renaissance feel to it, that just makes you want to dress up in period clothing and and go dancing in a castle. What is best about this CD though, is its true spirit of Christmas. He actually says that the Lord has given us a Redeemer to save us from sin. Way to go Dan! If you truly want to find the spirit of Christmas, to celebrate the birth of Christ, this is the CD for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Joyous, Timeless
Dan Fogelberg has taken some ancient Christmas lyrics and songs and brought them into the light again, and his original songs sound like they stepped from the same pages. Inspired by the Rennaisance, Baroque, and Medieval times, this recording has a marvelous Celtic feel. I start listening to it right after Halloween to get inspired to do my Christmas projects. ... The Winter Solstice series from Windham Hill is an appealing souvenir from the label's early days, when guitarist Will Ackerman still served as its chief guiding light and fount of original thought. For years Ackerman shunned the overt commercial trappings of traditional Christmas recordings and instead offered odes to a broader season that, like his artists' music, is compatible with periods of sustained, hushed contemplation. Winter Solstice II, released in 1988, mixes original and traditional compositions (none that specifically brings Christmas to mind) and is adorned with classical overtones from front to back, conveying the high-minded earthiness associated with the label's then all-acoustic format. A few pieces on the 50-minute disc clock in at under than two minutes, and a couple others are duds, yet several selections make this quiet disc a worthy listen: a handsome interpretation of Bach ("Prelude to Cello Suite No. 1") on harp-guitar by Michael Hedges, plus gorgeous, yearning piano solos by Philip Aaberg ("The Gift") and Michael Manring. Better known as a bassist, Manring's reworking of one of his own works, "Sung to Sleep," may be the disc's highlight. Ackerman's contribution, "Abide the Winter," and "Medieval Memory II" by the sadly disbanded duo of pianist Ira Stein and oboist Russell Walder, float through the air as beautifully as winter's first snowfall. --Terry Wood ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Mellow!
I like Windham Hill and though A Winter's Solstice Vol. 2 is not my favorite Windham Hill album it is still pretty good and a nice CD when you want to chill out and listen to something mellow and it also makes great background music when you are having a dinner party and want music softly playing in the background. The CD has music from some good Windham Hill artists and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite CD of the Windham Hill Artists
I love this CD! I listen to it at least once a day. I have almost all of the Windham Hill CD's and this is my absolute favorite!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking and peaceful
Without a doubt, this compilation of material is terrific. My family has listened to this CD each Christmas season for several years; we are still fascinated with the depth and beauty of the recordings from start to finish. Especially, as Bach advocates, the rendition of "Prelude to Cello Suite No. 1" by Michael Hedges is a virtuoso performance, which I listen year-round. "Sung to Sleep"..unbelievable...just buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A holiday tradition I look forward to year to year
I have the first 6 Winter's Solstice compilations, and this is the best of the bunch, with Vol.6, Winter's Solstice on Ice, far at the other end. I bring this disc out on Thanksgiving every year and can't bear to put it away until the end of January. It makes me feel the season even more than traditional Christmas songs. Highlights to me are the bookend solo piano pieces at the beginning and end of the disc, and the two featuring the hammered dulcimer of Malcolm Dalglish, both solo on "Come Life Shaker Life" and with Metamora on "This Rush of Wings". I challenge anyone to listen to these latter two while looking at the tree and watching the snow fall and not be transported to a better place.

5-0 out of 5 stars My very favorite Christmas CD
This is my favorite Christmas CD. It exudes such warmth and mystery and I love to listen to it while I lie in the dark looking at my twinkling Christmas tree. It really becomes a classic when you make it part of your holiday every year. My best friend has this CD and he listens to it all year 'round, he loves it so much. It is a beautiful CD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Salva Nos
I was just at my favorite record store when I came across "Salvo Nos" in the used bins today. Being a big Mediaeval Baebes fan, I had to buy it. Besides it was the only cd by the group that I found in the bins that I didn't have. As always, I was not disappointed with "Salva Nos". I have yet to be disappointed with a MB cd. I noticed on "Salva Nos" that the minimal use of instruments. Very little percussion was used but otherwise the primary focus was on the women's beautiful voices.Judging by the lyrics on this album, the songs pretty much celebrates the birth of Christ. After a few seconds into the song "Veni Veni", I realized that this was the same Christmas carol I am used to singing otherwise known as "Emmanuel". There was not one song on "Salvo Nos" that I didn't like but then again I have yet to hear one song by the Mediaevel Baebes that I didn't like. I look forward to hearing more from this lovely group of women.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun to listen to, worth having
My first Mediaeval Baebes album was Undrentide, it had a lot of good stuff in it but mixed in some synthesizer sounds, this one is much better. Salva Nos is the Baebes first work and it is a very good album with no modern sounding instrumentation in it at all. Of the 16 tracks only 7 have ANY musical accompaniment, in many of those it is subtly done.
I can't say which is my favorite tune but everything has a medieval sound and feel to it, I love the way they got such a good harmony and sound going just with their voices. Singing in 13th to 15th century English or Latin, mostly (lyrics provided in both the original and modern tongue), these women clearly don't need musical instruments.
Buy this album for the good music, enjoy it for the lack of intrusive modern sounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoy listening to these Baebes, but don't cross 'em
Sweetly blending voices.
Mix of haunting, sprightly, wickedly funny, old favorites (Gaudete, Veni veni, Coventry Carol) and unfamiliar delights (Adam Lay Ibounden, Now Springs the Spray).

Settings more traditional than Steeleye Span, richer texture than Christmas in Anglia.

Enjoy listening to these Baebes, but don't cross 'em,
This Ay Nicht sounds like a curse with real sticking power.

4-0 out of 5 stars medievil magic
Highly enjoyable! when you finish work, come home a little bit 'wired', nothing compares to sitting back with a beer or a port, turn down the lights and playing this album. It's mellow and magical melodies are extremely relaxing and highly enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for listening, if not for scholoars
As another reviewer pointed out, this isn't for the medieval purist, but it is fantastic to listen to. I take a more relaxed view of medievalism. Songs spread by oral tradition would could have many versions, so why not sing some with new arrangements, so long as they convey a "medieval" feel.

Many of the songs here bring to mind a group faire maidens singing for pure joy. "Ah Si Mon Moine"and "Verbum Caro" are just plain fun, while the dirge "This Ay Nicht" sends a bit of a shiver.

If you enjoy anything even vaguely Middle Ages sounding, you'll like this. No wonder thier other CD's are on my wish list. (hint hint) ... Read more

Just when you resign yourself to the fact that everything's probably been done in the world of holiday albums, a disc like A Joyful Noise comes along. Not that there's exactly anything new about the collection: with the exception of two originals, including the title track, the choices are all classics. But Jo Dee Messina brings a unique charm, warmth, and subtle sexiness to standards like "The Christmas Song" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," attributes that are often missing from yuletide releases. As a vocalist, Messina could teach today's pop divas a thing or two about how to create memorable vocals without resorting to histrionics. Vince Gill shows up to add even more charm on a duet of "Silver Bells." The nifty arrangements certainly count for a lot, and something like the haunting harmonica solo on "Let It Snow!" is truly unique to recordings of that particular song. But in the end, it's Messina's wonderful voice, spirit, and personality that make this the finest Christmas release of 2002. --Bill Holdship ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A voice made for caroling...

I know it's still kind of early yet, but Jo Dee's (finally!) holiday CD has got me in the spirit. The only thing more exciting than the CD is her upcoming Christmas tour!

Jo Dee seems to stretch out her voice more than usual and at the same time, it is soft (most noticeable on "I'll Be Home For Christmas"). "Sleigh Ride" is playful and upbeat, and her version of "Let it Snow" is trademark Jo Dee sassy, especially cute on both is the pause...then giggle at the end. Another very cool thing is the children used as background singers on "Winter Wonderland". Slightly more experienced background singers join Jo Dee on "What Child is This" (Kenny Rogers) and "Silver Bells" (Vince Gill)

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" gives me chills when I hear it, it is just Jo Dee and a piano - it is very touching in its simplicity. Jo Dee co-wrote "Keep the Faith" in her usual style of rising above hardships - it is the best song on the CD! Also original is the title track, about the hope of the season.

Masterfully produced with always wonderful work by the Nashville String Machine, Jo Dee's holiday CD is heads above the others. Her personal story and the pictures in the liner notes make this truly a must-have!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Joyful Christmas Thanks to Jo Dee Messina
Since the day I heard Jo Dee was releasing a Christmas Album, I was so happy to hear that, even though it was mid-summer. Originally she was supposed to release it in early October, then they pushed it back a few weeks to Oct.29! Anyways I bought it at Tower Records and I just love the CD! The CD Booklet and Cover are Beautiful as well. There are many pictures of Jo Dee as a child, pictures of her with her family, and in the studio recording THIS album! There are also a few Stunning professinal pictures of Jo Dee in the CD Booklet too! I was also very IMPRESSED by Jo Dee's liner notes. I was touched to see her write a very pretty thank-you to her Savior, because that is what Christmas is all about, right? I'm the kind of person that not only looks forward to hearing the music, but I also look forward to seeing the CD liner notes and pitctures, etc etc..... Now let's get to the Music! My favorite song on this Album is "Sleigh Ride". It's very upbeat! I also enjoy two NEW tracks, "A Joyful Noise",and "Keep the Faith". Both songs are VERY TOUCHING! She has definitely out-done herself on this CD! Her vocals are as good as always and she still has that kinda spunky attitude in this CD!...This CD is one of the best Christmas CD's ever!(In my opinion) For Jo Dee to take time out of her hectic summer schedule to record this Christmas CD is AMAZING! I was surprised she would make a Christmas CD this year! I'm glad because now every Christmas, Jo Dee will be a part of me decorating my home!...I hope everyone enjoys this record as much as I do! I definitely give it Five Stars! Merry Christmas and Enjoy!...

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFUL MIXES!
BORING,BORING,BORING, AND CAN YOU SAY BORING...THIS TYPE OF GARBAGE SHOULDNT BE ALLOWED ON THE FREAKING SHELVES. IT BELONGS MORE LIKELY IN THE TRASH LIKE HER!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good mix of old and new!
This CD is really nice at Christmas time. The songs give you a nice feeling since they are new and fresh but grounded in a traditional style. Jo Dee's voice is beautiful and strong - truly a joyful noise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not typical Jo Dee but very nice
Jo Dee built her success on predominately up-tempo songs recorded in a contemporary country style. I therefore expected that any Christmas album would reflect that, but I realized from other reviews that this album is not like that at all. In fact, this is a generally mellow album, with an orchestral backing used sparingly but effectively. The result is an album that bears no relation to the contemporary country scene, but is nevertheless a very enjoyable listening experience - at least to me, though some country fans will inevitably be alienated. While this is different from Jo Dee's other work, it is an easy-listening musical style that I appreciate in a different way.

Jo Dee demonstrates that she can sing with restraint as she works her way through a succession of classic Christmas songs. Only towards the end of the set does she loosen up, but even then she does not use the full power of her voice, which is on her other albums. After all the classics, the album ends with two excellent original songs.

Jo Dee's die-hard fans will accept this change of style as a contrast to her other albums, as will those (like me) with eclectic tastes. If you are looking for a contemporary country Christmas album, this is not it. Likewise, Jo Dee's less committed fans may hesitate. If in doubt, you might be wise to listen to some of it before buying. I thought long and hard before buying this but I'm very glad I did. ... Read more

Jim Carrey stars in the Ron Howard adaptation of Dr. Seuss's enduring tale of the evil Grinch in Whoville and the Christmas he looks to sabotage. Carrey also lends his quick mouth to "Grinch 2000," a rap duet with Busta Rhymes, and to "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," which he goes alone in a voice somewhere between Buster Poindexter, Don Rickles, and Pavarotti on acid and amphetamines. The mistletoe has its place above country-pop star Faith Hill, who delivers the album's first single, "Where Are You, Christmas?"

Other high-profile names here include those Canadian jokesters BareNaked Ladies, ska-punks Smash Mouth, and that omnipresent boyband 'N Sync. Lesser names like the Eels, the modest pop experiment of a man called "E", and the orchestral grandeur of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra contribute solid festive tunes. A few dialogue bits are scattered throughout, and James Horner's movie score finishes things off.--Rob O'Connor ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Grinch is great for christmas
I think that this grinch cd has plenty of good songs for christmas.First off the Faith hill " Where are you christmas" has a sorta of beat where you just have to sing along.Nsync ok some people might not like them but this sing is about true life that one of the guys goes through and i think that when a song comes from the heart it always has to be good in some way.The Busta Ryhmes/Jim Carrey rap deut is very up beat and a sure music groover except usally on christmas you want a slow or calm song so its good but i don't know about for christmas. For the "Why can't i find you" by Taylor M. I think this song is cute but she doesn't have the best voice but not all kids do. the song doesn't sound right on the cd but in the movie the song goes great with what she is doing. Well I think this is a good cd so, like its not a must have but i am glad i got it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining
James Horner did it again. He comes up with a song that I just can't get out of my head or hate for that matter despite whoever sings it, and that song is "Where are You Christmas?" sung by Faith Hill. I am definitely no fan of Faith Hill and never will be but this syrupy ballad has suckered me into buying the soundtrack alone.

I absolutely hated the tracks by NSYNC, Isidore and the Inquisitors, and Smash Mouth. They just got on my nerves and I always skip them. The Ben Folds song wasn't too hot either. His voice is very flat. The dialogue from the movie was... unnecessary.

"Grinch 2000", "Christmas is going to the dogs" and "Green Christmas" are other favorite songs off the soundtrack. I was very surprised that I liked the Barenaked Ladies track since I find them rather annoying in general. Not being a hip hop fan, I also found myself shocked to like Busta Rhymes contribution to the soundtrack. Overall a cute cd but I've heard better soundtracks in the long run than this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite What the Dr. Ordered, But Fairly Close.
I bought this cd to play on the internet radio show I host. The album basically contains some modern-sounding Christmas songs, sprinkled with a few traditional-sounding Christmas tunes, interlaced with movie dialogue and ending with the musical score written by James Horner. This isn't the typical Christmas album and neither is it the usual movie soundtrack. Instead, HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS Soundtrack is something of a strange hybrid of the two. Besides the songs updated from the original televsion special, the only songs I really enjoyed were "Green Christmas" sung by the Barenaked Ladies and "Where Are You Christmas?" sung by Faith Hill. Those two songs along with the score and movie dialogue make this an interesting piece of holiday music to listen. I don't think it's quite what Dr. Suess would have had in mine, but it's fairly close.

5-0 out of 5 stars great, fun CD...for a WONDERFUL movie
My daughter loves this CD, cause it reminds her of the great movie....I love it cause it's fun....and it reminds me of the great movie!

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, if you like the movie, you will like this CD
I enjoyed the movie dialogue on this CD almost more than some of the songs. The movie was awesome. There is certainly a variety of tunes here...from Smash Mouth to Faith Hill to N'Sync. (My favorite being Hill's "Where are you Christmas").

It is certainly original, and fun, but if you want traditional tunes, this is not for you. Obviously if you are interested in buying this CD because of the movie, than you can't miss; making this CD worthy of 4 stars. ... Read more

Recognizing that the holiday season really begins at Halloween (and, in some quarters, doesn't end until the Super Bowl), Vince Guaraldi and his record company have wisely assembled the hummable themes from various Charlie Brown TV specials. What we have here is the album's ability to communicate the playful irony and loopy, lovable characters that people Charles Schultz's "Peanuts" comic strip every week. Though only one actual Christmas tune is included--"Christmas Time Is Here," in both the vocal and instrumental versions--kids from ages 1 to 92 will still appreciate the "Great Pumpkin Waltz," the "Thanksgiving Theme," oddities such as "Heartburn Waltz" and "Joe Cool," and, of course, the "Charlie Brown Theme." --Martin Keller ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Charlie Brown Holiday Hits
This CD was excellent! What you can't necessarily tell from the song titles is that it includes almost all the music from each holiday special. For example the Heartburn Waltz is the title song from Be My Valentine Charlie Brown and there is music from the Easter special as well. An excellent choice for all of us that grew up watching those specials. Not to mention it's a great classic jazz CD as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost and Found Charlie Brown Songs Finally Released
I have this CD and I like it because it has music from Vince Guaraldi's lost and found soundtracks for PEANUTS TV specials. Other CD's of interest may be "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" and "A Charlie Brown Christmas". Both of them are soundtracks to PEANUTS TV specials and movies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good CD
One thing I was worried about before I bought this was if they had entire songs or just samples. They have entire songs. I don't understand song 6. "Good Grief" doesn't fit, it is ONLY vocal. Other than that, the songs are good, even if you don't know where they're from. Individual info:
Surfin' Snoopy is on "A Charlie Brown Christmas" when Snoopy decorates his house.
Heartburn Waltz is on "Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown" as the main theme, it is played during the class party.

Charlie Brown Theme is on many shows, played many ways.
Charlie's Blues is on "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" when Lucy tricks C.B. into kicking the football.
Great Pumpkin Waltz is on "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" as the main theme and is played in the pumpkin patch.
Thanksgiving Theme is on "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" as the main theme and is when Snoopy and Woodstock eat.
Linus and Lucy is the main theme for all.
Christmas Time is Here is on "A Charlie Brown Christmas" both CD and show.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection of Peanuts music!
Anyone who grew up watching the Peanuts specials is sure to love this collection of songs composed by the late, great Vince Guaraldi. It's guaranteed to bring on a great deal of nostalgia but it is also a CD you can play repeatedly, especially when you're in the mood for something relaxing and fun. Along with "Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits", I also highly recommend "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "A Boy Named Charlie Brown" as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Probably Not Worth Your Money
"Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits" is a latter-day Guaraldi sampler that combines several previously-released "Peanuts" classics (including "Linus & Lucy" and both versions of "Christmas Time Is Here") with a few unreleased nuggets - the most essential of which are "The Great Pumpkin Waltz" and "Thanksgiving Theme." In short, there's very little here that you don't already have, and it doesn't really work as a "holiday" album either. Instead, it's an extremely poor substitute for a badly needed Guaraldi box set or rarities sampler.

This disc would make a good child's gift; otherwise, it's for Guaraldi completists only (and they won't be happy with it). ... Read more

It never snows in the Florida Keys, but as every Parrothead knows, Jimmy Buffett was born on Christmas Day 1946. His Caribbean folk tunes have always had a festive air to them, and his Coral Reefer Band tackle these holiday songs in their usual laidback style. Buffett turns out both traditional carols ("Jingle Bells" with a few tropical ad-libs) and his own myth-building originals ("A Sailor's Christmas," "Merry Christmas, Alabama"). This may not be the traditional Christmas fare of chestnuts roasting on an open fire, but for those who enjoy ocean breezes and "wasting away" to this most successful beach bum, Christmas Island is exactly what the cruise director ordered. --Rob O'Connor ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brings the Carribean North in winter
Just as with "everyday music," when you're tired of the same old stuff on the radio, be it rap, rock, country, or Montovanni, Jimmy Buffett brings the welcome change of an island breeze. So too with this Christmas album. When you've heard enough of White Christmas and Deck the Halls, Jimmy Buffett takes you someplace different. It's still Christmas, though, and when you get back to Bing, Perry, and the Vienna Boys Choir, you're awfully glad you've had a chance to feel the Island breezes, too. Thanks again, Jimmy Buffett!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tropical Christmas Paradise
For years, Jimmy Buffett has put out many classic tunes throughout his career. This holiday album falls true to his reputation.

CHRISTMAS ISLAND is a super holiday album with a tropical twist to it. Not everybody lives in a winter wonderland, and this album is perfect for those who spend the holidays in a warmer climate. Buffett does an excellent job of combining some your favorite holiday classics with a little bit of a Carribbean twist.

Buffett belts out "Jingle Bells" in a way that will have you snapping your fingers and stomping your feet in no time. Other standout singles include the Hawaiin classic "Mele Kalikimaka," and a snappy, toe-tapping, hand-clapping version of "Ho Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum."

Overall, this is a very peppy album that is sure to bring a different type of joy to your home this holiday season. CHRISTMAS ISLAND is an amazing album and is an excellent gift for this time of year. It is the perfect background music for your traditional Christmas dinner of a "Cheeseburger in Paradise."

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun Christmas CD
I've always liked Buffett, but I'm no parrothead. That said, this CD is great! It constantly brings a smile to my face and is great fun to sing along with. I played this at work on Christmas Eve and had people hula dancing to "Christmas Island" and "Mele Kalikimaka". It's also great to listen to in the car as you're stuck in holiday mall traffic.

"Silent Night" and "O Holy Night" have their places at Christmas time, but to really enjoy yourself (and maybe pretend you're in a place where the breeze doesn't freeze your snot) this CD really pulls through.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD CHRISTMAS ALBUM!
Buffett never seems to disappoint! This album is full of good cheer and the spirit of Christmas -- Island style! The standout is his cover of John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War is Over)," just as haunting and moving as ever! "Ho Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum" will leave you laughing as Santa takes that long overdue vacation! The rest of the album is solid, cheerful, and different from most Christmas records, but a worthy addition to any Christmas collection! Grade: A-

5-0 out of 5 stars JIMMY IS THE BEST!
Yes, fellow parrotheads, he's done it again. Another great album by the king Parrot himself... and just in time for the Holidays! The renditions are great and the original songs are even better! My favorite is "Ho Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rhum". This is definitely a must-have Christmas album! ... Read more

This is the best of the Winter's Solstice series thus far. The songs are traditional enough to evoke the season, and the arrangements are unique enough that you can listen to this all year long.

Home is the last place these pop-aholics will be at Christmas: 'N Sync were on such a tight touring schedule in 1998, it's a wonder they even had time to record this disc in time for the holidays. The standard carols--"The First Noël," and "The Christmas Song"--aren't nearly as much fun as the original tracks here, but the a cappella version of "O Holy Night" is by far the masterpiece, and proof that the boys are more than just hyper-pretty faces. In fact, their superbly blended harmonies save what could have been ill-fated attempts to put a '90s R&B spin on songs like "In Love on Christmas" and the title track. "The Only Gift" and "Under My Tree" are addictive despite being overly cute, and you'll have a hard time getting "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" out of your head. Keep in mind that Christmas CDs belong in the background, let go of your anti-pop prejudices for just one day, and you'll be bopping along with the boys in no time. --Rebecca Wallwork ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Christmas CD!
This is a great Christmas album. *NSYNC's original Christmas songs are really fun to listen to. I especially love the songs "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" and "Kiss Me At Midnight". They also did a few covers on this album. "The First Noel" and the accappella version of "O Holy Night" are wonderful to listen to and shows that these guys can actually sing. I think that this is a must have for all *NSYNC fans and, even if you aren't a fan, I recommend this album for all pop music lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ok so its July...I'm still listening to it!!!
Well, even though it's nowhere near the Christmas season, I am still listening to this CD. My favorite song on the CD is the last one, 'Kiss Me At Midnight' I love that song, and Justin can kiss me anytime, not just at midnight. Just kidding to all you freaky Justin luvers!! (He's my favorite though, just cuz he's the closest to my age, and, oh, those blue eyes) But my all time favorite Christmas song is 'The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)'. I love that song no matter who sings it, but *N Sync sings it the best, no questions about that. I also love how they sang 'O Holy Night' a cappella. Its amazing what they can do with their voices. The only song that was odd was The Only Gift. The lyrics sounded like they should have been sung by a female, but nevertheless, *N Sync pulled it off. Another funky song is 'In Love on Christmas'. Its very R&B, and it really doesn't sound like *N Sync. If you were to hear it on the radio, I betcha you wouldn't know it was them. 'All I want Is You This Christmas' is very catchy, along with 'Love's In Our Hearts On Christmas Day'. Perhaps the song that will sound very familiar is 'Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays.' It was in the Christmas movie starring Johnathan Taylor Thomas and Jessica Biel. I can't seem to remember the name of the movie right now, but its on the tip of my tounge. I think it was called Home For Christmas, but I'm not sure. Anyways, this CD is great overall, so I am giving it 5 stars. If you are looking for heartfelt songs with meaningful lyrics and wonderful voices, plese buy this CD. I can guarrantee it, you won't regret it!! I will always luv *N Sync.
