Randy Travis's throaty baritone glows like the embers of a Yule log all year long, so this selection of old and new Christmas favorites is every bit as cozy as a rug and a hot toddy by the fire. The Nashville all-stars backing him on this 1989 release make the classics (including Willie Nelson's oft-covered "Pretty Paper") sound sweet, but the real treats here are Travis's own "How Do I Wrap My Heart for Christmas" (co-written with hitmaker Paul Overstreet) and a pair of tunes that put an ironic twist on familiar titles, "Oh, What a Silent Night" and the wonderful "White Christmas Makes Me Blue." --Michael Ruby ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A mellow traditional country Christmas album
This was recorded by Randy in the late eighties, at the peak of his popularity. It is a well-balanced mix of originals and standards - five of each.

The five originals are made up of two sad songs of lost love (White Christmas makes me blue and Oh what a silent night) and three happy songs (How do I wrap my heart up for Christmas?, Old time Christmas and my favorite track on the album, Meet me under the mistletoe).

The standards are well-chosen, including God rest ye merry gentlemen, perhaps the least-covered among them.

Even the happy songs never rise above mid-tempo, although that's just the style of the album and it works well. This is not a Christmas party album, but it is great for those moments when you can relax around a warm fire (as suggested by the closing song).

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb CD
This is an excellent CD. To me is the best christmas CD I have (among 7 others christmas cd's). Travis in this CD is in his best. (I ask you to apologize for my english mistakes because I am brazilian)

3-0 out of 5 stars Pure Country Christmas
This CD is COUNTRY all the way, so if you don't like twang, don't go near this. I'm sure you all know what Randy Travis sounds like, and know whether you like the idea of a hard country sounding holiday CD.

The two best cuts on this CD are Winter Wonderland and a perky, happy song called Meet Me Under the Mistletoe. He does a good, but unspectacular, job on some Christmas standards. Old Time Christmas is nice enough.

There are some clunkers on here. There are two my-woman-left-me-so-my-Christmas-is-blue songs, which leave me cold. He also does Willie Nelson's Pretty Paper, another country tearjerker. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like sad and miserable Christmas songs.

I recommend this CD only to fans who like their music really country. Even then, I'd say many people will prefer something like Ricky Van Shelton Sings Christmas, which is country without the crying in your Christmas beer selections.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest country Christmas album!
The best country music Christmas CD I have ever heard. I have always been a fan of Randy Travis. During Christmas, this CD is continously being played on my stereo. I would recommend this album to anybody who likes Christmas music not just Randy Travis fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Country Christmas Album!
Randy Travis is the most unappreciated artist in country today. Not since Hank Williams Sr has anyone been able to put so much heart and soul into his songs. Real country fans have got to appreciate his style, he's not a tag along to the "Young Country" fad today while essentially being of the same generation of artists like Garth who sing top 40 country. Even Christmas music illustrates his soulful style! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificant Recording of 'Scrooge'
This recording of Scrooge is really wonderful. I enjoy it! It's really neat! Anthony Newley is the perfect Scrooge! He sings songs believe it or not! That's why it's called a musical. A great musical! I bought it! I own it! I paid for it with my own money. Money! Money! Money! Scrooge loves it! I should know - I listened to it. Plus, I saw the movie! It was filmed! Oh yes, Scrooge hates Christmas! He made it quite clear in one of his songs, 'I Hate Christmas!' Here's a portion of it: Scavages and Sicafats! Flattereres and fools! Pharises and parasites! Hippocrites and ghouls! Calculating swindelers! Provaticating frauds! Perpetrating goodness as they roam the earth in hords, Feeding on their fellow men, Raping rich rewards, Contaminiating everything they see, Corrupting honest men - like me! (knock on wood) I Hate Christmas! I Hate Christmas! I hate seeing poor, pleasant peasants, Squandring hard-earned pennies on pres. Poor men proudly purchasing presents! Can't adibe it! Woe betide it! People are dispicable creatures, Loathsome and expicable creatures, Good-for-nothing, kickable creatures! I Hate People! and there's more! Buy this CD! You'll love 'Thank you Veddy Much!' I'll write the words down. Thank you veddy much, oh yes,

NOTE: Veddy means very. Constance Towers said it in the 1977 version of 'The King and I.' It starred Yul Brynner as the King. I loved the song 'A Puzzlement.' and 'Getting to Know You.' They are genuine classics. I also loved the 'Overture.' Here's the words. Um, wait, it - uh - has no words! But if you liked the King and I, you should see 'Mrs. Santa Claus.' It stars Angela Lansbery as well - Mrs. Santa Claus herself. I liked the song 'Almost Young.' Too bad you can't listen to it as a clip, because this is supposed to be a review of 'Scrooge.' But I'll tell you the words to 'Almost Young.' I don't know it by heart. But I'll tell you the words to 'Whistle.' Whistle, when you feel that no one is near. (Nora whistles and strikes a careless pose, just as Anna Leonowens did during 'I Whistle a Happy Tune' in 'The King and I.' IT goes like): The result of this deception is veddy strange to tell. For when I fool the people I fear - Like Bean did in the Jim Henson Muppet Movie 'The tale of the Bunny Picinic.' Such a classic! On the back cover of the video box it says 'Discover the adorable, fun-filled world of the Muppet Bunnies! The new treasure -' Oh yes, have any of you seen the Broadway show 'Raisin?' It's a true treasure! Especially the song 'A Whole of Sunlight!' Sun was shining through the rainbow when Dorothy sang 'Over the Rainbow' in 'The Wizard of Oz.' It goes like: 'Somewhere over that rainbow, Skies really, truly are blue, Well, yes, there's a land I know of somewhere else.' I know nothing. But if you're looking for a real treat, go to your nearest Dunkin' Donuts' for glazed, or chococlate-filled, or jelly-filled, or boston cream, or plain, or raisin-filled, or - Get this movie soundtrack of 'Cinderella' with Brandy. It is great! Especially when Zero Mostel sings 'If I Were A Rich Man!' from 'Fiddler on the Roof.' Did you make it to Haviland Middle School's dance last Friday? I can't believe Johnny threw Jackie right into the punch bowl. Speaking of punch, Johnny and Ricky had a fight. Speaking of Ricky, did you see last Tuesday's episode of 'I Love Lucy?' If not, then do so! Go back in time! Now, buy this CD of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 'South Pacific' or is it 'Oklahoma!' I know this review was boring, becuase I'm very blunt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable STAGE version of "Christmas Carol"
For anyone expecting the soundtrack of the film starring Albert Finney, this might be a disappointment. Yes, the same songs are used, but there is a vast difference between a work performed live on stage and one done on film. This CD presents a record of a show presented live and with a completely different cast from the film. I am lucky enough to have an LP of the film cast and will listen to that when I want to hear that version. I must admit that the best numbers are those that are common to both versions. The new numbers that expand the stage version are not as effective as the older ones. The stand outs are still the infectious "Thank You Very Much", "December the tewnty-fifth" and "I Like Life".

The first time I listened to the CD, I was not too happy with the characterization of Scrooge as presented by Anthony Newley. He was a unique talent and seemed a strange choice for this part, but in subsequent hearings, he has grown on me. I get the feeling that seeing him in person would give a completely different feeling as you could then picture him as you listen. After all, when listening to the film soundtrack, you can picture Albert Finney who was great in the film even if not a good singer.

A listener must take into consideration that a CD of a stage show may not have the same quality of voices as a film as there is no chance of dubbing another voice for an actor who can can act a part but not sing well. For the stage, the producers must pick someone who is able to perform the material live and do a complete performance -sing, act, dance without stoping once the show starts. Sometimes all the necessary qualities do not come through on a recording. I find that the whole "Scrooge" recording grows on you with each hearing.

I have copy of the full script and find that the music fits the script very well. For anyone really interested in a theatrical performance, this can be a really enjoyable experience.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just OK.
Anthony Newly is a disapointing "musical Scrooge", and is really misses the mark here. Where's the "Scroogy-ness" here? And Newly's singing isn't able to give us the transition
of cranky old miser to being filled with the Christmas Spirit. Overall, this version of "Scrooge" is OK, but I feel it pales in comparison to the movie soundtrack featuring Albert Finney.
Unfortunately, the movie soundtrack is only available on LP I believe, but it's worth it!

1-0 out of 5 stars WARNING: DO NOT BUY IF YOU EXPECT QUALITY
After reading the previous reviews, I knew not to expect the film. However, I was still astounded by the incredibly vast gap between what was a quality production in the film and what has become a haphazard piece of crap. This is not unlike the famous curse on the musical "Chess" where subsequent rewrites continued to lessen the integrity of the show. First of all, changing "I Hate People" to "I Hate Christmas" has totally cheesed up what used to be a fairly intense song when done (and acted) right. One believed "I Hate People"- changing it to Xmas over-extends the hatred of Xmas into a less believable but commercially viable "Scrooge is expected to hate Xmas so let's sell it that way" product instead of probing Scrooge's character in the way that "I Hate People" did. Did people feel that "I Hate People" was too dark and unsympathetic? TOUGH! It was more realistic! I bought this CD hoping that it would at least have the mark of a musical that aspires to a higher standard than all the crap that's out there today- intelligent orchestrations, trained singers with REAL acting experience, etc. However, this CD brings it into that company and pushes it back into the fray. Anthony Newley is a typical cheese musical theater performer and totally overacts- nothing special at all and I've heard 30 million like him. I actually am throwing this CD away. What a f$#^king waste.

3-0 out of 5 stars Newley plays Scrooge (about 20 years too late)
As much as I enjoyed Albert Finney in the movie SCROOGE, I had always imagined Anthony Newley in the role. Working with his old partner Leslie Bricusse, Newley finally got a chance to play the role in a theatrical adaptation of the movie. The only trouble is this is the Newley of the early 90's, his voice no longer up to the demands of the role. While Finney talked his way through the film's score, more is expected of Newley and he can't quite pull it off. The orchestration calls for him to reach for notes that were no longer a part of his range and this shows up throughout the recording. Despite these limitations, there is a lot to enjoy on this CD. Newley still entertains throughout and the score has a number of catchy songs ("December the Twenty Fifth," "I Like Life," "Thank You Very Much") that will leave you singing along. I'm more disappointed in what could have been, but for a true Newley fan this is something you should own. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Classical type Halloween music anthology
While this CD might cover most of the standard "creepy classics", there are a few more it could have covered, but frankly, the only song on the whole thing I didn't care for was Ives "Halloween". Some people may think that completely discordant music is great, but I do NOT! Otherwise, everything else was a great selection, and very entertaining. Definitely worth having, esp. if you like classical music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for Halloween Gatherings
If you're looking for a fun CD with spooky sounding music that reminds you of old Disney cartoons...I think that this CD was meant to be fun, NOT for the classical conisseur. It would be a nice CD for a Halloween gathering, or something similar, as background music.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classical education in creepy music for Halloween
You know, I am beginning to believe that there are more classical pieces appropriate for playing on Halloween night than there are novelty songs. I mean, once you get past "Monster Mash" and "Ghostbuster," with maybe "Werewolves of London" and the theme from "The Addams Family" thrown into the mix, what is left? "Fright Night: Music that Goes Bump in the Night" takes the high road and obviously opens up the playlist to anything magical and mystical. Just look at the first three tracks: "Night on Bald Mountain," "Danse Macabre," and "In the Hall of the Mountain King." Those will put you in the mood for terrifying trick or treaters right there (and you can get bonus points by pretending that the Mountain King lives in the Mines of Moria). This collection also does a nice job of touching on the known, as in "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" from "Fantasia" and "The Ride of the Valkyrie" from "Apocalpyse Now," with the unknown such as "Witche's Ride" from "Hansel & Gretel" and the aptly named "March to the Scaffold" from "Symphonie Fantastique." This is one of those albums that you can put on for background music as you run back and forth from the television to the front door to hand out candy and at some point your kids much actually pay attention and decide that classical music can be good music as well. "Fright Night" is a nice little collection of thematic music for a dark and stormy night (even without loads of free candy).

4-0 out of 5 stars A great theme anthology
As a regular classroom teacher, I'm always looking for music to use in the classroom for various occasions. I have used this collection with grades 4 through 7 with positive results. The students have written some interesting journal entries when they write while listening to this music. It's a great way to gain the interest of the most callous student who thinks of all classical music as "elevator music." The only down side comes when my hyper kids decide to move along with the music. Maybe I should give them a grade for interpretive dance.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's all here (well, almost)
I'm not much for anthology CDs, especially of snippets from larger works, but this is a must-have for anyone who plays in or conducts a school or community orchestra. Why? Because of those October concerts that always include at least one of the pieces on this CD. The orchestra I'm in is playing three of them this time around, and has played two of the others!

Especially welcome are "Danse Macabre", which isn't that commonly recorded, and the absolutely delightful "Halloween" by Ives. What's scarier than an out-of-tune string quartet?

I give this CD only three stars because of a sloppy middle section on "Sorcerer's Apprentice" (the brass just don't mesh), the ADD quality, and the non-existent liner notes. I also would have preferred the waltz from the "Masquerade" suite to the Mephisto Waltz, and I'm not sure why "Mars" is here.

Still, I think it's a great collection for musicians who play these warhorses every fall. You can just stick it in the CD slot in the car or computer, and have everything you need to prepare right there on one disc. In fact, I'm buying a copy for my conductor. ... Read more

A middle-of-the-road rock and pop assortment, The Edge of Christmas repackages chestnuts such as Bing and Bowie crooning "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy" and Dave Edmunds's version of Chuck Berry's classic "Run Run Rudolph." In between there are marginal readings of "Please Come Home for Christmas" from Pat Benatar, "Winter Wonderland" by the Cocteau Twins, and Queen's "Thank God It's Christmas." The real treasures are the Pretenders' "2,000 Miles," a wistful, tender lament about being away from loved ones during the holidays, and the Waitresses' zesty minor classic "Christmas Wrapping." The scruffiest gem is the Pogues' "Fairytale in New York," with animated vocals traded by Shane MacGowan and Irish folk-rocker Kirsty MacColl. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wanting to play it but it's only August!
I love this cd. I have tons of Christmas cds, both classic and funky, but this is my favorite. I hate to play Christmas music off season, but I also hate to wait to hear 2000 miles. These are all great songs that will become a tradition around my house.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have Christmas CD
This has become my favorite Christmas album. Starting out with Queen's Thank God It's Christmas and ending up with Christmas Wrapping, this CD will fill your holiday music fix, especially to for those long weeks leading up to the holidays. Other favorites include 2000 Miles from The Pretenders and The Pogues Fairytale of New Your. Keep your Transiberian Orchestra CDs for the family gathering and use this on Christmas Morn as a way to wake up your kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars a winner - trust me
a good christmas cd to me has either 1) new songs with off-beat lyrics or 2) traditional songs updated, say, with a rock tempo. this cd delivers both. every cut has something going for it. the eerie first cut by 'queen,' which i had never heard before, had me hooked. the production quality of this album is superb. it will make good use of latest technology in speakers and headphones. you are gonna love this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars good antidote for boring Christmas music
If I have to live in a world where John Tesh and Barbra Streisand have dueling Christmas CDs then this CD makes life bearable. Great songs, only one I grit my teeth through is Kate Bush (sorry, but I am the one person who didn't like her in the 80's and still don't, so there). My favorite is the Queen song and the Pogues are great too. How can you not like a song that starts off in the drunk tank on Christmas Eve?

5-0 out of 5 stars Over "The Edge..."
This 43 year old male loves this CD. I actually have worn out (little scratches) my first one from playing it so much and ordered 5 copies to keep as back-ups (in a safe!)in case they ever stop making this CD. It is such a great blend of songs. My favorite HAS to be the David Bowie and Bing Crosby duet. I saw them singing it live on TV a million years ago and the song has haunted me since then. I was so happy to find it on this CD.

A great and unique gift that I listen to all year. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The good doctor visits the Star Trek universe and beyond
It seems strange to say that "Hits From Outer Space" is not exactly mainstream Dr. Demento because we are, after all, talking about Dr. Demento (a bit of hyperbole since Barret Hansen only has a master's degree in music from U.C.L.A.). I have to admit I was thinking to find oldies like "Purple People Eater" on this 2002 collection, but the only song I recognized was one of the newest, "The Saga Begins," Weird Al Yankovich's brilliant setting of the story of "Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace" to the tune of Don McClean's classic "American Pie." The rest, such as Boots Walker's "They're Here" are new to my little corner of the known universe.

The good doctor probably should have worked "Star Trek" into the title of the album because we have "Beam Me Up, Scotty" by Terry McGovern, "Star Trekkin'" by Firm, "Stardrek" by Bobby Pickett & Peter Ferrara, "Do the Picard" courtesy of Humphires, Rusty & The Boneheads, "What's Up Spock" performed by Great Luke Ski, and "Star Trip" by the Congress of Wonders. Then you have "Twinkle Twinkle Little Earth" performed by Leonard Nimoy and you are wondering why William Shatner's "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" is not included in the mix. The "star" of the album is Leslie Fish, who has both "Carmen Miranda's Ghost" and "Banned from Argo," but I have to admit a special place in my warped little musical heart for "The Ballad of William Robinson" performed by Bill Mumy, who gives his "Lost in Space" character a good going over. The net result is that I liked this collection a lot more than I ever thought I would once I scanned the playlist. Not too many gems, but no really clunkers, and that ups the overall average in a good way.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Final Frontier
This is a Dr. Demento compilation featuring cuts with an outer space theme. With only twelve tracks, it's a bit on the short side. They could easily have fit half a dozen other cuts on it. Off the top of my head, I can name "The Flying Saucer", "The Martian Hop", "Martian Boogie", "Kirk and Spock", "Star Wars Cantina" and "Yoda" as tracks that could have been included. But I will judge the CD based on what it is, not what it could have been. First off, let me advise you not to get this CD if you are not interested in Star Trek, because over half the tracks have a Star Trek theme. "Beam Me Up, Scotty" is a slight, but fun, song based on the misquoted Star Trek catch phrase. "Star Trekkin'" is the funniest song ever written about Star Trek. "The Saga Begins" is a great parody by "Weird Al" that sets the plot of "Star Wars: Episode One" to the tune of "American Pie". "Star Drek" is a classic skit parodying Star Trek that will be familiar to regular listeners of the Dr. Demento Show. "Do the Picard" is a terrific song about Star Trek: The Next Generation. "Carmen Miranda's Ghost" is a strange, but fun, song about a space station being haunted by, yes, Carmen Miranda's ghost. "They're Here" is a decent song about alien invaders that has a similar arrangement to "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!". In the corny "Twinkle Twinkle Little Earth", Mr. Spock says a few words about the stars. I didn't care much for "Banned From Argo", which is about shore leave. In the great "The Ballad of William Robinson", the now middle aged Will Robinson of "Lost in Space" updates us on his life. "What's Up Spock" is an okay parody of the rap song "What's Up Doc?". "Star Trip" covers similar ground as "Star Drek", but it's twice as long and half as funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Demento has another hit
Another fine collection from Dr. D. It's been awhile since the good Dr. has put out a CD but this one is worth the wait. My favorite is "Do The Picard" by Rusty Humphries and the Boneheads, a true classic. Humphries also has a CD out called "Bomb Iraq". You couldn't do better than a double whammy of this CD and Rusty Humphries. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
Absolute perfection. She is one of the rare few who possess a voice such as this - not just technically moving, but there is no doubt that it's her soul singing.Thank you, Amazon, for introducing me to her music.Allison Crowe's voice not only gives me chills but leaves me breathless as well. It's a shame that talent such as this gets so little attention while at the same time we're inundated with singers who can't sing and other such crap.I can't wait for her next album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice!
This album is a wonderful addition to your CD collection if you have a love/hate relationship with seasonal music. The covers are good, but the holiday songs are where Crowe really shines. I discovered Crowe's "O Holy Night" purely by accident, and couldn't be more thrilled. I play this album at work, and people are constantly asking me who the artist is. I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful...everything
wonderful album. pretty much her voice + a piano producing great music. throws a little pop/jazz into classics, yet she doesn't totally profane the music such as so many modern renditions of old favorites do. (i mean, some of staci orrico's covers seem like they took the old songs, ripped em apart, set em to a bunch of synthesizers, drums, and guitars. not so with allison crowe) she has an incredibly powerful voice, and the piano parts are also well arranged. sometimes, however, she does fall into the pit of going overboard with the "remake" part of remaking the classics. anyway, it is a wonderful album, moving, peaceful, sublime, a fresh breath of good ol' christmas time air, and a should-be classic. ... Trying to capture the magic of her now-traditional Christmas road show, Amy Grant offers the solid but not substantial A Christmas to Remember. Since 1993, Grant and friends, along with the Nashville Symphony, have taken their brand of musical holiday cheer on limited tours. Show staples such as "Gabriel's Oboe" and "Highland Cathedral" are documented here, but they sound flat. However, a few songs--the newly penned title track, the nostalgic "Christmas Can't Be Very Far Away," and the playful "Mr. Sandman"-redo "Mr. Santa"--live up to Grant's usual high standards. A moody, ethereal "Silent Night" and a subtle reworking of Michael W. Smith's "Agnus Dei" are also of interest. While A Christmas to Remember may not be one of Grant's finest moments, after three Christmas albums what's left to do? --Michael Lyttle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Music Ever!
I'm your average 12 year old girl. I have always listened to Pop music, and enjoyed it thoroughly. I never really focused on Jesus, and Amy Grant's CD helped me to go back to Jesus. I went to a performance of hers with a couple friends and walked out a totally new person. As a goodie bag we received the Amy Grant Christmas CD. I loved her music, so I played it in my room when I got home. As I listened to 11. on the CD, I started crying. Since then I have become a devoted Christian and have pretty much changed my likes in music. This is the best CD there is on the market (in my view) because you get the Christmas songs everyone loves, but Amy also incorporates Jesus in nearly every song. If you are struggling and want to go back to Jesus, I highly recommend this CD. Even if you are a devoted Christian I think you should purchase this CD. It is the greatest Christian album out there, along with Point of Grace and Michael W. Smith! A MUST BUY!

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall, very inspiring
We've practically worn out "A Christmas Album" it's so wonderful, and this is the second Amy Grant Christmas collection I've purchased. It is truly inspiring, especially the awesome song "Welcome to Our World." This sends chills up my spine every time I hear it as does "Agnus Dei." "Christmas Lullaby" is also wonderful. My only complaint is with "Jingle Bell Rock" and "Mister Santa." They're OK, but she really doesn't seem into them. "Sleigh Ride" and "Immanuel" on her "A Christmas Album" are better. The accompaniment by Patrick Williams and his Orchestra and choir is first rate. What wonderful musicians! A beautiful album. Oh, yeah, my only other complaint is that the CD is too short! I wanted more songs from this talented artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good album made by a solid team.
I think this album is the best one she made about Christmas. The choice of the song are excellent, the vocal interpretation is quite perfect and the production (as usual with Michael Omartian) is perfect.
In this album, you have perfect voice with the perfect musical arrangment and musical interpretation.
I'm expecting the future collaboration between this 2 great Artists (Amy & Michael) for her next album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easygoing Christmas
This is a nice calming piece of work. Good to listen to when doing last minute wrapping or shopping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings the true spirit of Christmas to Life
I have always listened to Amy's music and know that when I do, it will be the best. I love the idea that she is a very strong Christian who loves the Lord and shares that Love with others. This CD is one of the best Christmas albums that I have heard. I love listening to wonderful christmas music, and feeling the spirit of the words and the sounds of Christmas. Backed with wonderful orchestra and sounds this one is one of my favorites. All of the songs are my favorites, I just can't choose just one, and will not.

So, if you really love Country music and Christmas Music, you will love this one, and for many years to come. ... Read more

Featuring a crack backup band that includes Spooner Oldham, Benmont Tench, and Chris Etheridge, John Prine Christmas is positively electric and rocking coming from a guy known for his rustic charm. Prine recorded this eight-song EP with a vague Christmas theme as a stopgap between his "comeback" album, 1991's The Missing Years and 1995's Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings. The live cuts (including collaboration with the Cowboy Junkies on "If I Were the Woman and You Were the Man") are charged with Prine's good stage sense and relaxed delivery. All exhibit his excellent wordplay and great musical sense. --Rob O'Connor ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's a Christmas album; just go with it
OK, so at least one song has nothing to do with Christmas ("If You Were the Woman and I Was the Man), although it's a beautiful song. And in one, he mentions Christmas in the intro only ("All the Best"). And one mentions Christmas in the song, but is arguably not a Christmas song ("Everything is Cool"). And there are only eight total tracks on the whole thing. But this is taking it's place very close to "Phil Spector's Christmas Album" as my all-time favorite.

John Prine is also very close to Bob Dylan in my eyes for title of all-time best songwriter. His quirky use of making us look at the meanings of words a little differently has always mesmerized me. A good example is in the best original Christmas song here "Silent Night All Day Long". Just looking at the title is a good example of this. It is the closing line of a very moving chorus of a song that would be a modern classic if radio programmers had any sense.

He also throws in a few traditional songs, "Silver Bells" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", the latter being done with a rollicking saloon piano in the background. Of course we get his immortal "Chrismas in Prison", and who thought THAT song would ever appear on a Christmas album? The closing monologue is touching, and has a surprise ending that, once again, may not be traditionally Christmas, but somehow fits and leaves you with a good feeling.

This album gets more likeable each time you listen to it.

I've struggled with this critical citation much longer than most, over the last few months this disc has turned thru at least a couple dozen times, and I'm still on the fence for words. I suppose the artist shared simular sensations while songsmithing his seasonal sleigh ride, a unquie sincerity is reflected throughout. 5-0 out of 5 stars Of Course John Prine Rocks
I recently saw John Prine in a small club in Berlin Germany with Todd Schneider opening up. It had been years since the last time I saw him and never had had the good fortune to see him in such a small setting. He is one of the few great American song writers. You know one of those who writes songs that you really have to listen to, to appreciate. Then there is the musicianship. No synthesizers, scratching records, light shows, or other gimmicks, just good music that takes you back to the America of the 50's, 60's, 70's..... and wherever else he wants to take you. After seeing his performance in this small club with two other backing musicians, I am not surprised to hear someone use the adjective "rockin" in connection with John Prine. If you've never seen him or heard him you're really missing something. I can only say, I hope to see him in Quasimodo again real soon, because like a good bottle of wine, John Prine keeps getting better with age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prine has it right -- Christmas is about memories
Imagine your favorite uncle telling you Christmas stories fireside in song. That would be this CD. It connects. Like Prine, I remember writing new Christmas wish lists every night from the Montgomery Ward catalog starting in August. Thanks for the memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best purchases in a long time
I am a huge fan of Westcoast music, many of which feature great keyboard and piano-based ballads with great vocal harmonies. I became familiar with Michael Omartian after seeing his name on many CDs. This CD is amazing. I have been listening to it for about 5 days straight at work, at home, etc. The music is addictive, the singing is diverse, and the CD works really well for me. Most of all, the songwriting and piano/keyboard playing, along with the arrangements, by Michael Omartian is unbelieveable. I highly recommend this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully arranged and performed.
This is NOT one of your typical Christmas CDs. It's much better! This CD is the story of Baby Jesus' birth, written and produced by the Omartians. Michael Omartian is the man behind the huge hits of Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, Christopher Cross, and so many others. (I particularly LOVE his production with Summer's Christmas CD-Christmas Spirit!) This music is simply breathtaking as it takes you through each character's performance in the story. Standout performances are Donna Summer (When the Dream Never Dies) and Richard Marx, Vince Gill, and Amy Grant. This Christmas musical is also touring around the country. If you see it advertised, be sure to buy tickets. You won't be disappointed. Great stuff!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Amazing Experience!
My first exposure to this recording was during some choir rehersals for this performance. My choir at school was offered to sing this big event with many Christian artists performing. I am truly amazed by this music and its power. All of the artists gave so much of themselves to the words and there meanings. Crystal Lewis was incredible and so was Twila Paris and Steven Curtis Chapman, some very talented artists gave so much to this production. The young Rachael Lampa shines and Anna, she posseses an amazing vocal gift. Not to mention she is very sweet in person:) In conclusion I reccomend that you give this recording a listen and try to make the production if you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful version of the Christmas story!
I absolutely love this CD. With the wide collection of talents and voice styles, one would wonder how it could be any good, but the artists manage to combine their talents to create a superb piece of work. My favorite piece is "We Have Come to Worship Him", which combines the talents of Wayne Watson, Bob Carlisle, Michael W. Smith, and Gary Chapmen, four men who have very distinctive voices but managed to make themselves sound as one in this beautifully worshipful piece of music. I highly recommend this CD if you don't already have it! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the price
It's a mediocre collection of horror movie music. Not bad for the price, but it sounds a bit too synthesizery.

1-0 out of 5 stars Blah!
Some of them sound like the original recording.

Others sound like MIDI tracks burned to CD. With such a good lineup of movies (sans X-Files), I was thoroughly disappointed at how "synthy" it sounds.

To get this CD all you have to do is use your favorite search engine and type "midi and horror".

I want my $$ back.

3-0 out of 5 stars Horror muzak for parties.
If you are looking for a solid collection of classic horror themes recreated as heard in the movies, then you had better look elsewhere. This collection is not for you.Various musicians either play respectable covers of classic themes (i.e. The Exorcist or Halloween) or completely slaughter them with poppy covers.Harry Manfredini's already silly disco-pop theme to Friday the 13th Part 3 is destroyed so badly you would think that Jason Voorhees himself had stomped into the recording studio.Fans of pure, play it like it sounded in the movie recordings will be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Money's Worth.
I picked this cd upand it is more than worth than I payed for it. The music isn't the "original" music from the films and television shows in the sense that it was taken from the original sound tracks. However, it is the "original" (as in written) music from the tv shows and movies. In some instances, the music sounds better here than in the movies (this is one of the most crisp HALLOWEEN themes I have heard). A great cd well worth your money's worth.

Depending on your point of view, Christmas is either a quaint sonic time capsule extracted from the mid-1980s or a timeless holiday classic. The first in what has become an ongoing series of Mannheim Steamroller Christmas recordings, this CD has sold millions, which seems to indicate that it is everything its advertising claims it to be: "America's favorite Christmas music." The powerfully successful Mannheim Steamroller formula, conceived by group mastermind Chip Davis, involves a blend of Renaissance-flavored moods and instrumentation (strings, harpsichord, flute, French horn) intertwined with polite pop instrumental music. At times, the analog synthesizers used in this 1984 recording sound dated and a little cheesy, particularly on "Deck the Halls" and "Good King Wenceslas." But it is a forgivable offense since live instruments and the earnest but ersatz medieval atmosphere they evoke dominate 8 of the 11 tracks. As pleasant and soothing as a Willard Scott birthday wish, Christmas does offer one selection that truly merits "classic" status: the reverent, prayerful, slow-motion interpretation of "Silent Night" ("Stille Nacht") for piano and strings that closes the album--a beautiful and heart-touching work. This selection alone makes this album worth owning. --Terry Wood ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars from Solo Piano Publications
The first of the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas albums, this one is a lot of fun, too. A bit more traditional than "A Fresh Aire Christmas", this album has a lot of arrangements that could be from The Renaissance. Harp, lute, hammered dulcimer, and clavichord join more contemporary instruments in stylings that are sometimes classical and other times modern. A rollicking "Deck the Halls" opens the album. Its fast tempo and heart-thumping bass line let you know right away that this Christmas album isn't going to take itself too seriously! This is definitely a modern arrangement, and it is gregarious to the fullest degree. "We Three Kings", "Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella", and "Coventry Carol" sound ancient with mostly acoustic instruments. Next comes a rock and roll "Good King Wenceslas" with plenty of voltage powering the instruments! The next four "olde English"pieces comprise the "Christmas Sweet" played in a style and instrumentation befitting that era. The rocking version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is possibly my favorite Christmas recording of all time. It is totally infectious and commands me to hit "replay" every time it gets near the end. Full of joy and fun, this is what I think Christmas should feel like at least a few times during the season! "Stille Nacht" closes out the CD on a soothing and peaceful note. This is a great Christmas album, and I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Beautiful Album You'll Ever Hear
We've all heard "White Christmas" sung in millions of ways, heard punk versions of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman" and heard Bruce Springsteen sing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." All of them are great. Christmas music is good stuff. Yet, I think there comes a point when the holiday classics need to sound as beautiful as they can. Mannheim Steamroller accomplishes this on Christmas 1984, performing some of the most haunting, beautiful melodies I've ever heard.

Kicking off with a combination of orchestra and techno, not only is every song on this album beautiful, but they are unique as well. With an amazing choir, a wind machine, and the most amazing orchestra I have had the pleasure of listening to, this album ends better than it begins, with Stille Nacht, a haunting melody that is a reflective and quiet tribute to the idea behind Christmas. It's the loveliest version of any Christmas song I have ever heard.

This album is unique, and it sounds absolutely wonderful. Not a day has gone by since the day after Thanksgiving where Christmas 1984 has not been in my CD player. This CD will be an investment worth your time. Give yourself a little gift this holiday season and pick up Christmas 1984. It won't leave your CD player until next Christmas.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Any Christmas Music Collection!
I'm a big Christmas music fan and I'm also a Mannheim Steamroller fan, I have been a fan ever since the time I was visiting my sister and I heard her Mannheim Steamroller Christmas CD and I was amazed by how wonderful and different they were so I went out and bought their first three Christmas CD's and this CD is my my #2 favorite with Christmas in the Aire being my #1 favorite. I love how they blend synthesizers with Christmas music and I love the often old world sound along with the modern sound. I greatly recommend this CD

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This is Mannheim Steamroller's first--and best--Christmas album. If I had to pick an all-time favorite Christmas album, this would be it. My favorite cut is the rocked-out version of "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen," which will compel the listener to jump to their feet and start dancing. That cut is followed by a haunting version of "Silent Night," which will bring back childhood memories of soft Christmas lights twinkling in a darkened living room...at least, it always does for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mannheim Steamroller? Sure, I'll buy!
If you don't already know, Mannheim Steamroller is the cream of the crop as far as today's Christmas music goes. Mannheim knows how to blend the radical synthesized sounds of the new millennium with the traditional to create a truly unique category all its own, commonly known as "The Best".

This album is Mannheim's first. Hence, the rather traditional title "Mannheim Steamroller Christmas". This group got its start publishing stereo demo music. Much to their surprise, customers said "I'll take the stereo, and do you sell the demo CD too? Sounds awesome!" It was thus that Mannheim entered mainstream media, quickly soaring to the top.

Here's a summary of the tracks on this album.

Track 1 (3:39): So you pop this CD in your player, then go back to what you were doing. Suddenly, WHOOM! Extremely cool, modern, synthesized sounds rocket out of the speakers, however small they may be, and grab at your ears. My friend, you have just entered a new era of Mannheim Steamroller, and your Christmas experience will never be the same again. This old fashioned decorating song has been invigorated and given the modern flair of synthesizers, and it is awesome. It is just the beginning.

Track 2 (3:40): Done just like you think it ought to be. A Middle-East flair accompanied by background jingling brings to mind the perfect image of three ancient sovereigns as they visit the new-born Messiah. More instruments join in on the chorus to make it sound more traditional, and pretty.

Track 3 (2:32): I still have no idea who Jeannette Isabella is, but the tune is done very sweetly, and quietly, with the beauty of the alto recorder carrying the tune.

Track 4 (2:38): Just a quiet little guitar to offset this ancient, simple, pretty tune.

Track 5 (3:29): Ha ha, hear that? If you thought track 1 was radical, think again! Once again, primarily modern instruments bang out this tune, giving it a very macho feel. These guys know unique.

Track 6 (2:20): A very renaissance-sounding tune, but it's got a jig-like tempo, proving that mixing 21st century sounds with 12th century sounds is just as good as the rest. The track, still, seems only average to me, if that word can go together in the same sentence with Mannheim.

Track 7 (2:03): Very quiet and simplistic. But then, so are birds.

Track 8 (1:28): The third renaissance-sounding tune, there's really nothing super-cool worth mentioning on this track.

Track 9 (1:37): Done at what sounds like a galloping tempo, it's upbeat and original.

Track 10 (4:19) I say, didn't we just hear this tune? Not like this, you didn't! Composer Chip Davis decided to do two variations on the same tune, and I must say I prefer this one to the previous. Majestic horns step in to give this tune a very bold feel, and cool.

Track 11 (5:25): Wow, what a sweet track, ending a sweet album. A quiet choir, accompanied by piano, starts the song out, and then the violins begin, adding perfect resonance and beauty. Perfect for quiet reflection, or the background theme for your family re-telling of the precious story of the Savior's Birth - one Silent Night long ago.

From beginning to end, this CD is really awesome, and begs to be added to your Christmas stash this year. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Musically Soothing Christmas Delight!
With the Holiday's fast approaching, most are looking for some really good Christmas music to buy for themselves or as gifts. Trust me on this, you can't go wrong with "The Carols of Christmas." It's one of my most favorite Christmas cd's (the other being "A Charlie Brown Chritmas: The Music of Vince Guaraldi"). It has become a Holiday classic in our home! With a delicate, yet strong balance, this cd is beyond beautiful! Musically, the sounds vary from solo paino, acoustic guitar & synthesizers to saxaphone, clarinet, harps & percussions - It's totally instrumental. Windham Hill fans, rejoice! George Winston, Will Ackerman, Liz Story, Brian Keane, Jim Brickman, John Boswell, Tracy Silverman, David Darling, etc....it is a holiday sampling of Windham Hills' best. And yes, this would make a great Christmas gift for anyone - I always give a couple each year. Perhaps the best way to describe this compilation is "New Age meets Light Jazz"...and thats a wonderful thing. It will leave you with a soothing, serene excitment for the Holidays. Makes for wonderful background music at any Christmas celebration! Cuddle up with a hot cuppa peppermint tea or some hot cocca and let "The Carol's of Christmas" work it's magic on your heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas music for the soul
This is a great CD! I generally go for really traditional Christmas music, but this adds a soothing, contemporary element to those familiar carols, in a purely instrumental form. The blends of sounds, the moods conveyed, all come together to give a wonderful listening experience. This intimate, sometimes melancholy music makes you want to snuggle up to someone you love.

3-0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTING TO ME PERSONALLY.......
I DON'T CARE FOR ALOT OF PIANO AND GUTIAR SOLOS. IT SEEMS ALL THE WINDHAM HILL CD I HAVE JUST PURCHASED ARE LIKE THAT AND I JUST BOUGHT ABOUT FOUR OF THEM, I AM QUITE DISAPPOINTED. I WILL PROBABLY JUST PUT THEM AWAY IN CASE SOMEONE ELSE MIGHT LIKE TO LISTEN TO THEM.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have
I never write reviews or anything remotely close, but I have to throw in my two cents here...and rather than gush, I'll just say that I have now purchased this CD 4 times since it came out - and they've all been for me (I tend to lose all my good CD's). There isn't another album out there that would make me consider doing the same. The holidays, simply put, are not complete without "The Carols of Christmas."

5-0 out of 5 stars Best christmas disc I own !!
I have always enjoyed the Windham Hill label. I was at a bass seminar and Micheal Manring was one of the instructors. 5-0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Performances of Christmas Classics
I was given this CD as a gift, and I wasn't sure I would like it since I tend to stick to classic renditions of well-known songs - especially Christmas carols. I was wrong! The artists on this compilation have put a very tasteful and unique spin that (dare I say) seems like a refreshing change to some of my holiday favorites.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE.........
I THOUGHT I WAS GETING EITHER TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS MUSIC OR
NEW ARRANGEMENTS OF THE OLD FAVORITES. FOR ME PERSONALLY, THERE WAS TOO MUCH PIANO AND GUTIAR SOLOS. I AM SURE THERE ARE A GREAT MANY PEOPLE WHO LIKE THIS TYPE OF MUSIC, IF YOU DO THEN YOU SHOULD LIKE THIS CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice alternative sound for Christmas
The Carols Of Christmas & Carols of Christmas II are a wonderful alternative to the standard carols. I would recommend these CD's for those who are into "new age music" or "soft jazz". You can listen to the songs on these CD's anytime of the year.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sequel is not as good as the original
Although this album is pleasant enough, the variety of music is not as great as the first album of The Carols of Christmas. It is OK if you want mostly guitar music. One of the tracks is misnamed (i.e., Angels From the Realms of Glory is actually Angels We Have Heard on High), and is just plain weird. Loreena Mc Kennitt's Middle-Eastern twist on God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is unusual, but has grown on me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The family favorite
Our children love to hear it in the car during the holidays. They even request it long after Christmas is over. All the original songs from the classic TV favorites. You more than get your money's worth with this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Memories, Plus Your Kids Will Like It
Many favorite childhood songs are here on this disc. You can't help but feel better after listening to songs like "Put One Foot in Front of the Other" and "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year". It's also great fun to be able to share these terrific songs with your kids.
You'll play this one over and over.
You may even play it too much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rankin/Bass Greatest Hits (Almost)
"Rudolph, Frosty and Friends Favorite Christmas Songs" is a fun little Christmas CD. It has a hodge-podge of hits from four Rankin/Bass Christmas specials ("Santa Claus is Coming to Town," "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," "The Little Drummer Boy" and "Frosty the Snowman."), featuring such great Holiday singers as Burl Ives, Jimmy Durante and Fred Astair.

All of the songs are well done, and come straight off the soundtrack for the Christmas special. Rankin/Bass has always meant holiday fun, and this CD is no exception.

The only complaint about this CD is that it could have been better. Rankin/Bass has a treasure horde of Christmas songs, both traditional and original. Songs from "The Year Without a Santa Claus" would have been appreciated. For what it is, it is a good CD. But it could have been better.

Ah well, "Jingle, Jingle, Jingle, I can hear those sleigh bells ring, I am old Kris Kringle, I'm the king of jingle ling..."

4-0 out of 5 stars Have A Holly Jolly Christmas!
This is a great CD, the songs are fun and they bring back good memories of listening to the songs when I was a kid watching these Christmas specials, all the songs are good but the best are Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, Frosty The Snowman, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Holly Jolly Christmas, Jingle, Jingle, Jingle and Silver and Gold. I very highly recommend this CD for both the young and the young at heart!

5-0 out of 5 stars Holiday Masterpieces on CD...
This CD is a MUST have for ANY true fan of truly masterful holiday classics!!! This CD contains spliced versions of "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman" (my personal favorite). Chilly, forced, and overdone, this mixed bag of modern classics, tarted-up traditional carols, and trio of tunes penned by Beyonce Knowles doesn't conjure a single warm and fuzzy image of chestnuts roasting on an open fire or Jack Frost nipping at your nose. Rather, it's just another forum to showcase the band's Gucci bag of vocal gymnastics and crass materialism. The Texas trio takes seasonal classics like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas," "Silent Night," and "Little Drummer Boy" and embellishes them with their own trills and off-kilter harmonies, obscuring the songs' simple beauty. "On the eighth day of Christmas, my baby gave to me a pair of Chloe shades and a diamond belly ring," brags Knowles in the title song, a takeoff on the "12 Days of Christmas," without ever explaining why they lopped off four days. The band is shamelessly self-indulgent throughout the dozen songs found here, taking untold liberties, like renaming "Carol of the Bells" "Opera Bells" and recasting "Silver Bells" as "Platinum Bells" to reflect their multiplatinum status. But the low point of the record is when Destiny's Child hawk their Hasbro-manufactured dolls in the intro of "Platinum Bells": "Ladies, remember long ago we asked Santa to give us Christmas dolls? This year the dolls are you and me under the tree." Humbug. --Jaan Uhelszki ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Funky Holiday Fun!
The new Destiny's Child Christmas cd offers a nice mix tmeless christmas classics and some funky new songs that have the famous Destiny's Chils trademark with the funky percolating rythyms. These songs you can skip like the title cut 8 days of Christmas( while a good song, the lyrics are inappropriate for Christmas time). The coice cuts are the ballads and the new versions of the classics such as Silnt Night, O Holy Night, and Do You Hear What I Hear. The girls sound better than ever and the harmonies are breathtaking. The Highlight is Opera of the Bells. It showcases the lovely threesome at their best. Flawless harmonies and strong solos. One note for Beyonce. Stop with all the vocal acrobats. These are Christmas songs and should not be glossed over with a bunch of riffs. Sing them how they were meant to be sung. Beyonce does have a strong voice but it seems to me she's trying to out do the other two...Michelle and Kelly are just as fantastic and should get just as much time in the spotlight at Beyonce. But overall a very nice Holiday collection that is ure to have something for everyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment
While Destiny's Child has great harmony and good producing skills, this album is somewhat lacking. The first three tracks are nice and enjoyable. "8 Days of Christmas" and "Winter Paradise" are nice Christmas songs for the new generation and "A DC Christmas Medley" fashionably mixes a number of good Christmas songs. After that, the rest of the songs are missing something. "Silent Night" seems to be extremely over produced with Beyonce' breathing over her singing just a little too much. The song is naturally beautiful and with Beyonce' singing, the song should have been a pretty good one. However, towards the end you are wishing that she would stop breathing so heavily and just sing the song. "Little Drummer Boy" claims to have Solange, but you barely hear her over Beyonce'. They sound so similar that you have to struggle to hear Solange's 15-year old vocals. The song is decent, but it leaves you wondering if Beyonce' steals the spotlight from everyone, even her little sister. Kelly and Michelle's solos stand out from the rest of the album... Maybe because you don't hear Beyonce' taking all of the good verses. "Do You Hear What I Hear" is definitely the best Classic song on the album. "O Holy Night" is mediocore with Michelle singing the entire song. She has a pretty voice, but it can be a bit irritating towards the end. "White Christmas" and "Platinum Bells" are both too short. They should be interludes instead of songs. But after hearing "Platinum Bells" a couple times, you are glad that it is so short. "Opera of Bells" is a great harmonizing song. However, it makes you wonder why they are a trio if Beyonce' does all of the harmony and sings over herself instead of having Kelly or Michelle cover her vocals. The entire song is vocals, but you never hear Kelly or Michelle. Nonetheless, it is a gorgeous song.

The album is a good album for teenage Christmas music. It is not however, a classic Christmas album... Unlike Mariah Carey's Christmas album, it will not contimue to sell after next Christmas. Furthermore, for Destiny's Child to be so religious, you wonder where is the soul? Christina Aguilera's Christmas CD has more soul and gospel music than Destiny's Child's CD. Christina Aguilera is more pop while Destiny's Child still try to link themselves with a R&B genre. If they are R&B, where is it in their Christmas album? The absence of soul or gospel really left the album incomplete. It is a nice ablum to have in your Christmas collection, if you have a Christmas collection, but it is definitely not one of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great CD
I have read all the diffrent comments that people have written and i feel you have not given the cd credit deserverd....... Although maby the cd was put together in a short period of time, I feel that the vocals on this cd are way better than that of Destinys Child first album No, No, No and that of Survivor.... dont get me wrong, Survivor was a great album but u still didnt get to hear the vocals of Michelle and Kelly enough. In 8Days Of Christmas they each have an individual solo song and each of them just as good as the other. Yes I do agree that Beyonce's voice is overused and would like to hear a diffrence in the next Destinys Cild album... And there are more than just 2 good song on the album. My few Fav's are, 8 Days of Christmas, Winter Paradise, A DC Med;ey, Little Drummer Boy, Do You Hear What I Hear, Spread a Little Love on Christmas Day (which is my ultimate fav) and This Christmas...... That is almost the whole album. I think the reviews that are shown on this are from buyers who just bought the Cd and wrote it a week or 2 after buying it and listening to it 1 time. I admit after I heard the Cd for the first time I regreted I bought it but after listening to it over and over again you learn how to appreciate the song just like any other cd. I congradulate DC3 on this cd and wish them the best of luck...... I dont get or understand how people wrote what they did but thats your choice..... I say the CD was GREAT and I advise everyone to go out and buy it........... I feel everyone just need to get out of this old school thing..... we are in the year 2004 not in the year 1960. Things are gonna change and i find it great that DC broke out of the original instead of the same old classic christmas songs. It gets boring. If you want classic go and buy "Now Thats What I Call Christmas" Dont complain because they are trying to stay witht the times they are in.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing
There are only two songs on this entire CD that I recommned: "8 Days of Christmas" and "Opera of the Bells." 8 Days has a great dance beat, it just makes me wanna get up and dance! Opera shows off Destiny's Child's amazing vocal skills and harmony. The other songs do too, but their just not very good. The other songs I feel as if they're trying too hard to sound good. They should just sing naturally and it would be awesome. Don't buy this, it's only worth the two tracks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too good to only play around Christmas time!!
OK, so I'm a huge fanatic of DC, but I try to be honest with my reviews ... AND THIS IS TRULY AN AWESOME CHRISTMAS ALBUM!!! if you're not a fan of R&B or DC, I'm not trying to force you to go buy this (why are you even reading this?), but if you are, what are you waiting for? Since i'm really bored and have a lot of time on my hands, I'll give you a quick summarey of each song:
8 Days of Christmas is an awesome, funky twist on 12 Days Of Christmas. love it!
Winter paradise is cool because every member has a verse to themselves. Awesome!!
A DC Christmas Medley is a bouncy number with about a zillion different Cristmas carols mixed cleverly together and each member has a verse.
Silent Night really shows off Beyonce's vocal range. You go, girl!
Little Drummer Boy is really cool. It features Beyonce's sister Solange.
Do You hear What I Hear is my favorite! Kelly has a beautiful voice, and the harp and guitar are soooo pretty underneath it!
White Christmas is rather short but has great harmonies!
Platinum Bells is another short one but it's another clever twist on Silver Bells.
oh Holy Night showcases Michelle's rich and soulful voice.
Spread A Little love on Christmas Day is a good dance number with positive lyrics!
This Christmas is an awesome remake!
Opera Of The Bells is an excellent opportunity to show off DC's precise harmony! Jaw-droppingly perfect!
Proud Family is catchy and fun.
Emotion with Strings was a really pleasant surprise. Even my dad liked it, and he was stuck on the BG's version!
OK, this is getting very long, so in closing, I was once again wowed by these ladies! Holla!

5-0 out of 5 stars stupidrocker
I used to think that blink-182 was a band of drunken rockers who thought they were something great. I had a bad idea of what rock really was. Then my friend proved me wrong. She convinced me to buy this single, and I loved it. It was then that I realized blink-182 is the most awesome band. I now have all their cds and singles, and this one was by far my favorite. It is a true blink-182 classic. Oh yeah, some advice to middle-schoolers: if you want to scare your friends, walk around singing this song the day before Christmas vacation. It worked for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Typical Blink
Anything associated with Blink-182 automatically rocks. It just so happens that this song does too! It's my favorite holiday tune, even when its not the holidays! It has a great guitar and backround percussion. I suggest it to all fans of Blink-182, Sum 41, Green Day, A New Found Glory, or Box Car Racer. You'll love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars SWEET CD!!! BUY IT!
I love blink! This cd is the best one. It combines all there music! It combines most there cd's, so its kinda like cd sampler, but all blink. I wont be home for christmas (which isnt heard by much)with all the small things (enema), Josie (dude ranch), and Please take me home (take off). All very good songs, all should be listened by millions if not yet! ... Read more

Like Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera never met a melissmatic phrase (that gospel-like elongation of syllables) that she couldn't love. And she deploys more than her share throughout this 11-song holiday disc. Her excessive style is best-suited to "Merry Christmas, Baby"--complete with a surprise cameo by Dr. John. When she isn't blowing out her chords with embarrassing emoting, at times, Aguilera sounds like she's shouting. Still, you know that if you don't get this for your teenaged fan, it's you who will get that lump of coal in your stocking. --Martin Keller ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My, My Christina
Christina Aguierla explodes in this Christmas album with traditional and orginal Christmas pieces. I will admit she embellishes a little too much with some songs but others, are just perfect. 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' is not usually a song to be reckoned with but, you would swear she was the first one to record it. Her embellishments are perfect, and does a jazzy version. Fabulous! This version should be turned into the classic.
The song that best suits her, and a big buying factor, is 'Merry Christmas, Baby'. Another Ella Fitzgerald like song, it's awsome. Her rendition of O Holy Night is incredible, and shows her indiniable talent. Even my cousin, who dislikes Christina to all end enjoyed this song. 'Christmas Song' was a great belt out way to start the CD - even her attempt in rapping (which is improving every time she does it). Definetly speaks about all kids around the world celebrating this Holiday. I never would have thought that a very Christian song (Angels We Have Heard On High) would sound good with drums and turned into r'b. Very Ella, and is a treat to the ears.
The enhanced CD portion is great, too. And, the CD packaging is extremly inviting, the colours are great and inviting. This CD is fabulous and will be enjoyed by all, even the (picky) parents and older siblings.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Good
I'm a very big Christina Aguilera fan but I don't recommend buying this album. Maybe she shouldn't have recorded two albums at the same time while she was touring the world. You can't get a good album in doing all that. Well, on to the album-- the original songs range from bad ("This Year") to terrible ("Xtinas Xmas", what is that?). They have cheesy beats and don't bring any sort of holiday cheer. As for the traditionals, they are for the most part very very over-sung (even if Christina does have a beautiful voice). I've recently started listening to blues, so I like "Merry Christmas Baby" w/ Dr. John (the song that convinced me to buy this album) but shes not really on the mark with that one either, but its pretty good. Same deal w/ "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". "The Christmas Song" is the best track on this album, which is beautiful but other than that the album basically flops. Christina should have done this album when she wasn't so busy so more time could be put in it. If you're a big Christina fan, I advise getting her Spanish album instead of this, its wonderful (even if I don't know what shes saying). I still love you, but Christina, honey, you messed up on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christina all year
By far the best Christina album ever. This Christmas album really dose justice to the vocal talent that are Christina possesses. If you doubt Christians talent please buy this album you'll soon be a believer. I listen to this album not just around Christmas but all year i love this CD .Stand out songs include OH HOLY NIGHT, HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS, AND CHRISTMAS TIME

3-0 out of 5 stars good Christmas album
I'm not really a fan of Christmas' albums but I had to buy this one since I'm a die hard fan of Christina Aguilera and I wasn't really disappointed. If you expect something boring and religious then you're wrong, there are a few party Christmas tracks and a few tracks where Christina can really show her wonderful vocal range. But it could have been better, there are a few fillers and I always try to avoid albums with fillers. Not disappointing but not impressing.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amzing christmas album
It's amost christmas !! If you want to have a happy christmas !!
Bring Christina Aguilera's "My Kind Of Christmas" home right now!
It's the best christmas album i ever got ! The songs are great !
