His take on Halloween may be one of the funniest things I've ever heard (On hearing about Halloween for the first time as a kid, Seinfeld says his reaction was, "You mean everyone we KNOW is just GIVING AWAY CANDY? What's WRONG with them?"). He segues from this into the meanings of "up" and "down" for kids and adults: "When you're little, life is up. Wait up, hold up, shut up! Mom, I'll clean up! Lemme stay up! Parents, of course, are just the opposite. Just calm down! Slow down! Come down here, sit down, put that down! Keep it down in there!" This album deserves your undivided attention--to really enjoy it, my husband and I recently listened to it on a long drive when we were going on vacation and we both were nearly in tears from laughing so hard. Great stuff!

There simply aren't enough positive adjectives to describe this soundtrack. I wholeheartedly recommend it to all---those who fondly remember the TV special and look forward to its return every year; those who desire to add a slightly different flavor to their yuletide music collection; and those who enjoy fine jazz, by an artist whose immense talent was barely realized, but fortunately captured here. And pardon the cliche', but like a fine holiday wine, this one only betters as it ages. Drink it in as it rekindles your most joyous childhood memories. STAR TRACKS: Classic carols "O Tannenbaum," "What Child Is This" (extended later on the album as its traditional "Greensleeves"), and "The Christmas Song" each are delivered in a style unlike any holiday chestnuts, but "My Little Drum," a lovely interpretation of "The Little Drummer Boy," is a far more stirring rendition than the famous original it borrows from. "Christmas Is Coming" and the ebullient "Linus and Lucy" are spirited, youthful celebrations guaranteed to raise a smile on anyone, anywhere, at anytime. But for pure imagistic splendor, the beautifully desolate "Christmas Time Is Here" (performed twice, once with a small children's choir) and the colorful "Skating" may be the album's most evocative numbers, transporting the listener into the story's animated world which every one of these enchanting songs so perfectly support.
Vince Guaraldi's soundtrack to the 1965 classic TV special A Charlie Brown Christmas helped incorporate the style of music that became known with Charlie Brown specials (he would do several more soundtracks for Charlie Brown TV specials and their 1st movie until his untimely death in 1977). This is more than just a soundtrack, as there are many pieces not featured in the special ("My Little Drum", a variation of The Little Drummer Boy, "The Christmas Song", "Greensleeves", and "What Child Is This"). Then of course come the songs from tne special. There's the original compositions "Christmastime Is Here", which opens the special, "Linus and Lucy", which would be featured in many of the other Charlie Brown specials for years, and "Christmas Is Coming" (a bossa nova number, which sounds a little like Richie Valens' "La Bamba"). Of course, you have the traditional Christmas carols included like "O Tanenbaum" (if you close your eyes, you can almost picture Charlie Brown and Linus shopping for the perfect Christmas tree!) and "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" (which closes the TV special. Sorry, you don't get the anticlimactic "MERRY CHRISTMAS, CHARLIE BROWN!".). Then there's the ode to Schroeder's favorite all-time composer, Beethoven, who as Lucy points out "never got his picture on a bubble gum card" with "Fur Elise" (you can almost picture Schroeder tickling the ivories as you hear this!).
There really isn't any more to be said about this CD. Everyone's seen the show, and the music of Vince Guaraldi is timeless. One of the all-time greatest jazz musicians, Guaraldi had a unique and almost universally liked style few, if any, modern musicians can touch. The soundtrack has taken on a life of its own - play it at a party and people will smile and relax as they are almost subconsciously transported back to childhood. The Christmas season starts for me right after Thanksgiving, when I first play "A Charlie Brown Christmas". Through all the hassles of traffic, shopping, cooking, cleaning, and the overall holiday rush, this CD always reminds me of the true meaning of Christmas, what this season is truly about. And I still take out and admire securely-stored LP version which I will never give up. ... Read more | |

I don't know how to classify Rodney Dangerfield, but I do know that he is one of the greats.

The artists on this are fantastic. From Gal Costa do Vinicius De Moraes, you're taken on a real trip through some of the classics in Brazilian music. Perhaps most interesting and stellar of which is the Elis Regina only vocal of Waters of March. It has such an innocent sound! Carlos Lyra's "Influencia Do Jazz" will take you to a beach in the late 60's, and Baden Powell's Consolacao has that rich acoustic sound I've grown up with and love. And check out Joao Gilberto's song here along with Gal Costa's tracks... She's a VERY underrated singer IMO. But this CD isn't without fault. The sound quality can be suspect on some tracks, and a song or two weren't what I would have selected from the musicians here. (You can find "Aguas De Beber" and "Girl from Ipanema" on virtually every compilation. Still I would have to recommend this. It's not that expensive, and out of most of the Bossa Nova/MPB samplers, this is one of the better ones IMO. For the make of Samba De Bencao, Elis Regina, Baden Powell, Tamba Trio (who did the wildly successful take of "Mas Que Nada" that featured in the 1998 World Cup commercial with Brazilian footballers in an airport) and the others... good tunes. Also check out Nova Bossa Nova - a companion piece to "Red Hot & Rio". There is some overlap, but the other version of Baden Powell's cut on that comp is better than this one IMO. Maybe also check out Bossa Nova Gold, a two disc set of MPB and Bossa Nova.

I love all kinds of Music. But it appears these days, I am drawn more and more to peaceful, meditative Music such as "Gifts of the Angels." (Funny, but I am filled more with Peace than I have been in a long time. Perhaps we seek out Music that represents our state of mind...I don't know. Or maybe we take on the emotions/message of what we listen to most. Again I don't know.) I remember how upon the first listen I didn't care for "Gift of the Angels" that much. The truth is, I didn't Get it. I wasn't Ready for it. Ah, but I felt there was something THERE. Whatever it was, it drew me to listen again and again. And I am so glad it spoke to me and continues to do so. If you are still reading this, and your "Peace" cds are in short supply, please purchase this and truly listen and Allow it to Regenerate you. You deserve that and every Joy. Many wonders await you. But you have to open the door and let them in. Soar!
I heard a few similar sounds in this CD which I had heard in other recordings, however this one is especially inspiring. To me, it sounds like what you might hear if you were floating out in space and you could hear angels singing. It also feels like you could be a star falling slowly through the sky, just observing the earth. This music makes you feel as if you are floating above the earth. Close your eyes and you will see what I mean. Listen to: "Gifts of the Angels" and "Awakening." Sand Dance is also quite pretty and you can hear more of the harp music in that selection. ... Heavy Metal by Sammy Hagar Okay, three songs. I was going to add Blue Oyster Cult's 'Veteran of the Psychic Wars' or Black Sabbath's 'The Mob Rules,' but they just aren't in the same class as the three listed above. And the rest of it? Well, Cheap Trick is always entertaining but never amazing. The songs by lesser-known bands are okay. Journey's 'Open Arms' is completely out of place. So is Stevie Nicks. You have to admire the wide range of songs here, but the top three outshine the rest. (And there's something funny about the fact that the two best songs on the Heavy Metal soundtrack are BOTH called Heavy Metal. Maybe the producers should have given each band or musician that requirement: "The song has to be called Heavy Metal.")

For the listener who has only a passing familiarity with Stereolab, this will sound like more of the same (bleeps, blops, french accents). A closer listen reveals rich, carefully constructed soundscapes. With respect to their previous albums, this one's closest to Sound Dust (song structure: each one has at least one major transition) and Emperor Tomato Ketchup (sounds, energy, alt-pop/post-rock feel). The recording is sharply divided between left and right channels, particularly noticeable on headphones. See the forum on stereolab for a debate on the pros and cons of that. p.s.
However, I am not a fan of Emperor Tomato Ketchup. Compared to their earlier stuff, and their more recent stuff, ETK is extrememly weak and boring. IMHO. The death of Mary Hansen was a serious blow to them. They didn't let this deter them, as they rose out of the ashes and gloom of her death to make their best album yet. The tracks on this album are much shorter than their others, but they're tighter. They took their previous 7 or 8+ minute releases and compressed them into shorter, but simply astounding pieces. "Feel and Triple" is a poignant and touching epitaph for Mary. In this album, they have taken elements from their past sounds and combined them, to reinvent themselves once again. There are echoes of a much younger Stereolab in this album; and there are echoes of an older, wiser Stereolab in this album, too. If you are a longtime Stereolab fan, you will NOT be disappointed by this album. If you are a new Stereolab fan, this is a brilliant introduction to the band.

This is an album that compels you to make 'if' conjectures: if Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain had been an album, it would have sounded like this; if Björk ever picked up an acoustic guitar and lived in a van in Alaska like Jewel, this would have been the result. The first song, Terrible Angels, sums up the mood perfectly as the ambient noises of the sisters' Paris flat and recorded barnyard animal noises add idiosyncrasy to the questioning, childlike vocal duet: "If every angel's terrible, then why do you welcome them?" The wistful, helium-pitched gospel stylings of By Your Side add a faded linoleum tinge, as Sierra warbles "I'd wear your black eyes, bake you apple pies...I just wanted to be your housewife", while listening to the unpolished, organic '70s style acoustic guitar melody of Good Friday is like eavesdropping on the two sisters as they tinker away quietly in their white-shuttered flat. The tinny sounds of Tahiti Rain Song evoke ethnic music heard through a scratchy, broken-down transistor radio while sitting in a thatched hut in a steamy jungle. Their record company labels them "tiny field mice singing gospel" and, for once, the hype is spot on.
If you believe in the idea that big things come in small packages, La Maison de Mon Rêve is the type of album you'll want to hear. It comes in the form of a duo called Cocorosie. What makes the album immediately charming is the restrained humility that surrounds each of these songs. From the extremely gentle, yet very old-fashioned, vocals of Sierra Casady to the sparse organic sounds performed by her sister Bianca, La Maison de Mon Rêve is expressive art in its most basic form. Although it's blatantly obvious that the easiest reference here would be Devendra Banhart and his ghostly style, there are additional layers in Cocorosie's music that make it just as promising as anything Mr. Banhart has currently completed. This is primarily due to the fact that there are more instruments and textures in Cocorosie's work. One of the most influential things about Cocorosie is the fact that they've actually (re)invented a genre consisting of folk, hip-hop, and blues that has never been pursued prior to today. What that genre will be called remains to be seen, but I'd call this album a dense study in "delta folk-blues." Funny enough, because if you research back to the beginning of blues music, you'll find that there aren't too many (if any) female artists from the 30s, 40s, or 50s that played the same type of music as a Robert Johnson or Skip James. Fifty years later, however, Cocorosie actually possess these qualities that were missed by the female artists of those periods. Not all of La Maison de Mon Rêve is folk and blues based. In fact, on songs like "By Your Side," "Not For Sale," and "Hatian Love Songs," there are tiny hip-hop beats that give the album yet another unlikely dimension. The single greatest element of this album is the vocals given up by Sierra. Her vocals and songwriting abilities are passive, yet entirely effective ("Jesus Loves Me" and "By Your Side"). These are the types of songs I've never heard before; at least in this context. The lyrics themselves are worth their weight in gold; but the entire album is a forward-thinking piece of music. Only on rare occasions do artists come along and create something completely detached from the rest of the field. They immediately become a trendsetter, and inadvertently inspire many other artists to attempt the same sound. This Parisian duo is one of those artists. I can almost guarantee you haven't heard anything like it in the past, but we'll probably see a lot of imitators in the future. I get extremely excited when things like this come along and remind me that big things do come in small packages. And for the time being, La Maison de Mon Rêve remains the most original sounding album I've heard this year.
The above formula seems to best sum up their style and the style present on La Maison De Mon Reve. Most songs featured Sierra making a commotion with various found noismakers while caterwauling mournfully, backed by the stunning voice of her sister and her willowy acoustic pluckings. For an example of the glitchy found-sound rythem section Sierra creates, I might cite the end of track 10, "Madonna". One my favorites is "By Your Side", with lyrics that conjure up Lady Day not only in tone but in substance, I recall them recreating this number on stage with some recorders of some sort managing the volume and effect by simply moving it around and closer and then back from the mic. Stripped down but complicated; eclectic but somehow steeped in tradition, this album is certainly worth taking a chance on to see if you too are surprised, and thus rates a generous 4 star rating.

See, I expected a collage of nearly unlistenable, profane, garbage pieced together in an experimental, haphazard, or non-traditional manner, hailed as 'progressive' by genuinely weird people looking to be different. Uh, no. Actually, what I found was a VERY listenable, VERY catchy, VERY unique, amalgam of musical styles, samples, and unusual lyrics resulting in an amazing work of musical genius. Boy, was I impressed. Tracks begin and end in a random manner, usually ending with a sample or something, but not necessarily. Within each, the music might jump from piledriving metal to smooth jazz, to quiet electronica, raucous funk, or upbeat ska. Video game loops and random samples noodle in and out of the mix, as guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, saxophones, bells, whistles, and the manic vocal stylings of Vlad Drac(Mike Patton) burst out over top of it all. He does everything from growling, squealing, rapping, croaking, crooning, talking like a retard, barking like a dog, and more, all in his Real Thing-style vocal prime. Needless to say, this affected FNM to the point that Angel Dust came out a year after this with so much Bungle influence that it was a different style than The Real Thing. Memorable moments? Look at these: The keyboard-laden circus-styled riff jumping to laid-back jazz phrase in "Quote Unquote," a song about a man who has nothing but a nose, A true kaleidoscope of musical insanity and creativity, breaking the rules and making new ones on the way. It's not atonal by any means, with plenty of catchy goodness, sing-a-long passages, and memorable, wacky, and hilarious moments. It might take a few listens to digest, just don't force yourself. You'll come back to it eventually. It's a crowning achievement in music. The album begins with 30 seconds of silence, and that's all the rest your senses really get...
The band created a very unique dark carnival landscape. Try to imagine a clown at a child's birthday party wearing a bulky jacket that is hiding a bottle of scotch and an old issue of ... If you can, then you have a pretty good idea of what kind of world Mr. Bungle created with songs like: 1. Quote Unquote - A funky circus metal number about a blind, deaf, and limbless man whose only sensory input is through his nose. Kind of like Metallica's "One" with a sense of humor. 2. Slowly Growing Deaf - My personal favorite. Like it or not, Mr. Bungle somehow make punk and progressive rock coexist. Dramatic, and full of teeth. 3. Squeeze Me Macaroni - A raunchy little ditty about a food orgy. Quite funny and funky. 4. Carousel - Another circus metal song, this time about about an evil carnival. If you listen closely, the lyrics that say "Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee" sound suspiciously like "Will Warner Bros. put this record on the shelf?". Hmmmmm. 5. Egg - Sounds like a cross between Napalm Death and Fishbone. Nice videogame music intro. The lyrics seem to be about overprotective parents. I could be wrong. 6. Stubb (a Dub) - Bizarre tune about a dying dog. Combines extremely upbeat cartoonish music with lyrics that are so morbid they are almost funny. A fine display of the band's musicianship. 7. My A** Is on Fire - I like the combination of jazz and metal - listen to Candiria if you want to hear a group who knows how to do it - but it is quite annoying having to hear Mike Patton's lousy imitation of Dennis Hopper's character on BLUE VELVET. 8. The Girls of Porn - I don't mean to sound like a member of the Moral Majority, but the lyrics seem like an excuse to write something dirty. This song is filler compared to all the other songs on the album. Fortunately, they didn't make a career out of writing songs like this. 9. Love Is a Fist - Weird ( as opposed to what? ) and violent. Another jazz-metal song. 10. Dead Goon - Just as strange as anything else, yet Patton sings with quite a bit of emotion here. The lyrics will either weird you out or make cry, maybe both. One thing I didn't mention was that this album has entirely too many extended samples. Who honestly wants to hear a poorly made recording of when the band was trying to sneak on board a train? Or better yet who wants to hear someone taking a dump? Mr. Bungle was creative and talented enough to not need to resort to such measures. But overall, the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages. The band's lowbrow humor is not enough to disguise the fact that they are amazing musicians. Also check out their other two albums if you like this one. The fourth one might be out in 2003 since their albums seem to come out every four years (1991, 1995, and 1999). Overall rating: 4.5 stars.
All of this thematic theorizing is, of course, a bunch of subjective horse feces. This music is incredible. They probably think they have outgrown it and maybe they have, but I sure haven't. In my opinion, Mr. Bungle's three records get successively better, so if you like this one, listen to others as well. Just don't expect to hear more of the same thing. I have made the mistake of trying to describe this music before. I always fail miserably. You will just have to give it a listen. "Mr. Bungle" came out in 91'. Remember that while you are listening to it. An underground classic.

Which leads to the two caveats: 1.) The "20 Tracks" label shouldn't be confused with 20 songs and 2.) There are no special lyrics/pictures/etc. encoded on the disc. Several other reviewers have groused on point two, but I see it as being like enhanced CD's: Sure the extras are neat, but I buy it for the music.
The production certainly sounds professional and I probably wouldn't have known the vocals weren't the originals on the songs I didn't know. The problem isn't with the production or even the song selection, but rather the degree of difficulty. These are not the easiest songs to sing which I think would make this prohibitive for most kids, as well as adults who have trouble enough screeching their way through "My Girl" and "Born to Be Wild". It should also be noted that the lyrics do not display on your screen, but are included in the booklet.

We watched his new sitcom and laughted at it so much. "Finally, I said, something to really laugh about. His sitcom was so much down to earth, simple, innocent, entertaining, loving, caring, and extreme sincerity. Just heard that George Lopez Show is coming back in fall. Can't wait to see it!!! Didn't we have enought of George so far? Someone might ask. NO No NO NO NO we never can get enough of him. After we bought the CD "Right Now Right Now" we listen to it and laughted again on the way back home. We laughed so much with "lick and pass, lick and pass, take a bite out of it and see what happens"... He was talking about a ice cream in a little cone and ten latino kids sharing it.
This cd is a definate must for chicanos. If your a Joker and stuff. A must for this hilarious cd.

The greatness of Bill Cosby isn't that he is funny. Lots of comics are funny. What makes him great is that he is as funny the first time as he is the 500th time. He paints a picture you can see and hear in your imagination. When he talks about kindergarten you are transported back to your kindergarten room. Same with shop class, and a $75 car, and playing on a horrible team. And he can make a 7-year old kid laugh at the same time he makes a 50-year old laugh. And he is clean! There is very little if any comedy for shock value--what he says isn't funny because you can't believe he said it. It's funny because you know EXACTLY what he is talking about. You can relate. The man crosses all cultural and ethnic boundaries, proving that deep down we are all more alike than we are different. I had just about all his albums at one time, then loaned them to a freind who never returned them. It is great to see them available on CD. I can't wait to introduce my kids to Fat Albert and the statue of Frankenstein they found (stole it, really...but that's another CD)

POISONING PIGEONS IN THE PARK - Delivers a poisonous dose to all those 'Springtime walking in the park with my love' type songs. BRIGHT COLLEGE DAYS - Come on, all of you must have heard a school song you wanted to cringe at. They're trotted out at every school reunion. A CHRISTMAS CAROL - A carol celebrating the monetary (and the montonous) aspects of Joyous Yuletide. THE ELEMENTS - Inspired by the tongue twisting genius of Danny Kaye and the music of Gilbert and Sullivan. Lehrer sings the periodic table of elements! I wish I could've heard this song much earlier . . .it could've stopped me from failing high school science! OEDIPUS REX - A title soing that never was for the movie version of Oedipus Rex. "Of all ideals they hail as good, the most sublime is motherhood". LOL! IN OLD MEXICO - A ballad of Old Mexico; complete with a half a ton of angry pot roast, Lehrer's brother's pet dog Rover, typhoid, dysentary, and a stolen wallet! CLEMENTINE - The traditional singalong as reworked by Cole Porter, Mozart("Or one of that crowd . . ."), a bebop beatnik, and Gilbert and Sullivan. IT MAKES A FELLOW PROUD TO BE A SOLDIER - Tom Lehrer was in the army for two years; from January 1955 to January 1957. This track is full of characters he could have rubbed shoulders with during this time, but most likely didn't. SHE'S MY GIRL - Despite all your lover's faults (inability to cook, bathroom habits), you still love her/him. This track could use a bit of a gender swap, though. THE MASOCHISM TANGO - A tango for all you gluttons for punishment who want the love for your partner to be a flame, not an ember. WE WILL ALL GO TOGETHER WHEN WE GO - This should have become an anthem for the 'anti-nukes' and 'anti-war' protestors from the '60s til the present day. It packs the same punch as the early Dylan protest songs or the later electric ones by the Turtles, Country Joe & The Fish et al.
But I think the real reason Tom Lehrer's "An Evening Wasted..." has held up so well for so long is that his humor and craft are top quality. We still read Mark Twain's acerbic satires. Will Rogers is still an American icon, while others have come and gone. And in the tradition of Twain and Rogers, Lehrer, while commenting on contemporary conditions, takes them and twists them in a way that is nothing short of brilliant. And, without realizing it, has given us a better understanding of his times, while making us laugh (or weep) at ours. Forget all that heavy stuff: this is just a darned funny collection!
