5-0 out of 5 stars 4 Aces is a wining hand indeed!
This has to be the quintisential Tornado recording, all members of the group seem to be in tip top form, performing the fervor of teens, these "oldtimers" can still show their stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Winning Hand
These "Four Aces" may be grandfathers, but they've still got it all. From the music one hears their playfulness, their emotions, their mastery of the music, and their sensuality. Thanks, hombres, for the happy feelings I get when I listen. Don't you just love those men from Texas

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent. Give it a whirl.

5-0 out of 5 stars una flecha en mi pecho
I have been listening to this CD for several weeks and have learned most of the lyrics. I have just in the last year figured out what I was missing not listening to our Mexican neighbor's great music. I bought this CD for "Mas que tu amigo" -la tema de 'Velo de Novia' con Jorge & Andrea, but then the other songs were great as well. They are witty lyrics and well written, & M.A. can really sing too. I don't like Tejano and I'm glad there is not much of that influence on his music. You can improve your Spanish too, because he sings slowly and clearly enough to pick up on pronunciations. Este 'CD' es muy bueno!

5-0 out of 5 stars Por Fin!
Mas Que Tu Amigo, #7, was used as one of the main musical themes for the novella "Velo de Novia" and has a very catchy beat and rhythm. I bought the CD for the one cut, but have been pleasantly surprised by the spirit and life of the entire CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars He has done it again with different rythms/beats
I am 24 years old and let me say that I have almost every CD of Marco Anotonio....I love him since his first songs back in the late 70's early 80's. I grew up listening to him at home. This man does have the heart, brains to compose some great songs. You really have to give him a lot of credit...there is very few people that can compose almost every single song on their CDs'. You can never go wrong with any of his CDs...I just don't listen to his music..I really pay attention to his writing, instruments that he uses and you can feel how much love and thought he puts into every song. There is always a song on all of his CDs' that you can identify yourself with. And of course you are always going to have your favorites and like one song more than the other ones. In this new favorite tracks are #1, 4, 8, 9, and 10. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy his other ones. Since he came out solo in 1996, I thought I was going to be dissapointed because I was thinking he was not going to be the same without the "Bukis." But he has done it once again...and I love it!! It's not that he is better...but it's just different and it's still great. This is his 5th CD as a solo artist and I truly enjoy and love them all. His music is so relaxing, and when you're in's just wondeful to listen to. Since it all comes from his heart, that is why we feel it in our heart also. You just can't scan through it or "just listen". You really have to pay attention, listen to where he is coming from in every song and listen to the lyrics and that is when you'll appreciate his music. Good job Marco Antonio Solis...
... LIke they say "Music doesn't have boundaries"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great cd from 'El Buki Mayor'
If you are looking for something 'musically new' you will find almost naught. Marco Antonio Solis is a 'song' composer not a mere music composer. Marco Antonio Solis new cd is a step back from the orchestral arrangements which he was collaborating with Silvetti; instead he uses mariachi as his second orchestral choice- a panoply to his lyrics. The latter is something he has done before. The only diference 'musically' is an unusual interesting 'brass sound' on some arrangements here and there and the clear tumbao rhythm-he has done caribbean rhythms but not as 'explicit' as in this cd. Solis is more of a composer so his song compositions are still remarkable and convey the strong emotions and romanticism he is known for. The first song is the single that premiered the cd. The second song, Con la Vida Comprada, is the usual ranchera. The third song, El Milagrito, is a mellow banda-norteña song-remember that banda song in the Buki album 'Por Amor a Mi Pueblo'? well, Milagrito, is arranged that way. The latter is a nice insouciant composition. The fourth song is a ballad-ranchera. Ranchera because it uses a mariachi. Que te Quieran Mas que Yo is a love ballad where the author wishes on his love the best: including that she is loved more than what he has done. The fifth song, El Diablito, starts out with an explicit guagancó until a nice a-la Buki keyboard arrangement transforms it very Buki and hence very Mexican. The song is arranged with the famous 3-2 Cuban clave. Furthermore, the song has also that brass sound aforementioned that sounds nice. Diablito is sang in a Juan Luis Guerra style. After the guagancó intro it goes into a mambo that reminds you of the Pedro Fernandez re-make of 'Yo no Fui'-it actually uses that little happy laugh Pedro has throughout.
The sixth song is the regular ranchera : Ni alla donde te Fuiste. The latter has the traditional ranchera-harmonica intro. In the middle, the back up band artist, who speaks in the middle of the song, sounds very remeniscent to Vicente Fernandez' 'Volver, Volver'. The seventh song is a nice andean cumbia.- one of my favorites. I wish the rythm was exploited a bit more. The latter is called Mas que tu Amigo. The eight song, Te me Vas, is also ranchera-like . The ninth song is a bolero-ranchera-ballad. It starts out with a requinto that is also heard throughout the song. I say it is a ranchera because it uses mariachi. It is a ballad because it is not a ranchera rythm and the voice leans towars a ballad. Bolero because of the requinto heard through out. Finally the last song: Las Noches las Hago Dias. The latter is a norteña ranchera. The mariachi singers provide the backing vocals.
This cd is another showcase of 'su majestad'(or Buki Mayor or Marco Antonio Solis) song composition at its best. I still would like him to get back with the Bukis. Why? because his compositions would transcend to another dimension. After all, the saying goes that two heads are better than one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cd
Tu Amor O Tu Desprecio is the 3rd cd I have bought from Mr. Solis. The guy makes nice cds. Out of the 3 cds I got I have not been dissapointed at all. All 3 I like the whole thing. I did not know Marco Antonio Solis untill 1999. In fact I had never seen what he looked like befor 1999. His new cd is a more mexcian style cd which fits him perfectly because hes mexcian. I am not from mexico. I am from New York. There were no reviews on his new cd and I was worrid that it would be a bad cd because he just did a cd 2 years ago. When I heard the wole cd I was releved. It very nice. Over all its a cd wroth getting for yourself or that special person you love like your wife. Nice cd!!!! 5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Milgaro: One Of The Best Albums Ever!
Wow!!!!! This is one of the most beautiful CDs I have heard in a long time! This is not your typical Latin album that you are hearing, guys. It does have the mix of Spanish guitars, dance, pop, ballads, and tons more. It is a very beautiful collection full of clean, unconditional love, plus some praise and worship of God, among other topics.

Jaci has proven herself again, with a deep maturity to her voice, with a lot of emotive versatility. The songs she picked for this particular album are all so outstanding!

1. "En El Centro De Mi Corazon": This is a great song to introduce the rest of the CD, because it starts out very soft, as an intro, and then...BANG! Jaci hits it again!
2. "No Hace Falta Un Hombre": This is the Spanish hit of her single, "I Don't Need A Man" from the movie, CHASING PAPI. This is a cool song. Jaci wrote both versions.
3. "Milagro": The title track, which is so inspiring, because it reminds me of her hit single "Llegar A Ti" (My all-time favorite song of hers)! Awesome!
4. "Un Trocito De Cielo": A good song to dance to! Good beat, great rhythm!
5. "Perdida Sin Ti": This song is cool, 'cause it has this edgy rock sound to it.
6. "Eres Tan Grande": This song is also neat, because it has sort of an R&B sound, only it has its own thing about it as well.
7. "A Un Paso De Mi Amor": I absolutely LOVE this song!! Her voice is just beautiful on it! I love singing it,'cause it gives me a feeling of knowing God's presence is truly here!
8. "Me Valga Dios": I love the intro music to this song. Jaci sings this song with a delightful emotion!
9. "Es Amor": I love this one as well! It's simple, but very pretty!
10. "A Tu Lado Es Mi Lugar": This is the Spanish version of Jaci's "Where I Belong" from UNSPOKEN. I really like both versions; Jaci co-wrote them as well!
11. "Mi Vida No Es Nada Sin Ti": This is a really beautiful song, co-written by another all-time fave of mine, Gloria Estefan! I believe it's the Spanish version of her hit, "Can't Stay Away From You." Great job, Jaci!

Jaci, you did it again! Congrats, and may your faith in Christ remains undying all your days! Plus your music!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Her Best Latin Record so far...& a some surprises
I was concerned at how tough a job it would be for Jaci Velasquez to top her last "Mi Corazon", but this cd has some great surprises. It is clear that she has matured since her last projects:
She is not only tackling important emotions but her voice at certain times has incredible bravado ("A un Paso de Tu Amor") which had yet to be experienced as passionately and outstandingly in past projects. These songs seem to showcase her vocal abilities/control better than any other...Her voice knows when to shy way and when to break through. It is evident that she has pushed her voice creatively to new limits. Only one track (Me Valga Dios) seems a bit of a mismatch (in style) but all in all the album is one of the best of the year in latin pop.

She diligently makes it clear that she's many things: vulnerable, strong, questioning, assured...It is a great/brave for a Christian artist these days to express her faith and feel confident enough to reflect on and celebrate love (pure love) in parallel markets.

Must listen to:
* Moving confessional : "A Tu Lado es Mi Lugar"
* Rougher electro-rock texture of "Perdida Sin Ti"
* Soft vulnerability of "Es Amor"

BEST SURPRISE: Last Track: "Mi Vida no es Nada Sin Ti".
This is an INCREDIBLE spanish cover of Gloria Estefan's "Can't Stay Away from You". She holds her own here.
I recommend it! (HIghly)

4-0 out of 5 stars A fan who expected more of Jaci
I know this is Jaci's homeback from a long time of not-doing-any-music, BUT... Let me fill you in with the defects:
-The lyrics are very mundane: I know they were written by great writers (like Emilio Stefan, Estefano and Gloria Stefan) but it?s not the kind of love I would expect Jaci to sing. I mean, the "Take me to the sky", "All this love is making me crazy"; "You make me crazy with those kisses that take me to heaven" (in spanish it doesn?t sound that cute). It just does not sound right... maybe it?s because they went a little bit over with the love subject.
-She has totally opposite ideas in the same CD: First she is sick of boys (I feel the same some days, and those days I sing along with her) but inmediately she is begging for a kiss... in the next 5 musics. Come on.
-Not everything in life is love: I hate to say it, because I have a bf, but come on! More things go on in life than love, boys, kissing, blah blah blah. She can sing about friendship, dreams, achievements, working hard... just a thought
-The lyrics are not included... I get annoyed every time a singer does not put the lyrics into the CD.
-There is not at least one music to dance: she sings great and I love dancing and doing choreographies of her music. But this time she did not do ANYTHING to be danced. :-( sad, sad, sad.
I have to give her credit for other things, though.
-Beautiful voice: as always, but it?s good to know she keeps it. No way of doubting she found grace in God?s presence. An angel and much more!
-Nice photos and new image: congrats on that, Jaci
-Good rythm: the musics have varied ways of starting, if you know what I mean. The rythm they used for each music is good and appropiate, and new!
Conclusion: I will keep loving Jaci, and buying her albums

5-0 out of 5 stars Muy bien!
This CD rocks! The first track is DA BOMB! It's powerful, and like she did with Como se cura, she starts off with a strong point and message, and really makes your soul feel something good. The music arrangements for it are incredible! The instrumental break is beautiful! Jaci's voice on this album makes me want to listen to her more and more and more. I may not be a Spanish major, but a friend of mine, well, he's been translating some of the songs, and I'm liking what I read and hear. Buy this CD if you love Jaci's voice, good instrumental arrangements, and Spanish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, but lyrics not enclosed
Two Spanish versions of Jaci's English songs appear on this album: "A Un Paso De Mi Amor" (from Crystal Clear) and "A Tu Lado Es Mi Lugar" (from Unspoken). The artistry is excellent, but it's unfortunate that the lyrics are not enclosed with the CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Que puedo decir acerca de este album ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Review
Just wanted to add to the already wonderful reviews. Like another reviewer, I don't speak any Spanish (although my basic Italian gives me a slight clue as to the gist of the songs) - but this is great music. It is beautifully orchestrated, soothing; Luis Miguel has a great voice. The songs are so singable that I am continuously trying to sing along phonetically. I never get tired of this CD, I can play it over and over.

Though I speak no Spanish, this album is a must for those who wish to surround themselves with soft, lush romantic music. Laying poolside, sipping Margaritas, soaking up the sun and dreaming of a romantic encounter all are enhanced by this album. Peppered with some lively songs just to keep you from forgetting where you really are!

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Grammy
A bit of pop, some R & B and a little jazz are all complimented by the perfect voice of Luis Miguel culminating into his 2nd Grammy for Best Latin Pop. Inolvidable!

5-0 out of 5 stars a polished jewel
This is the 1st in the "Romances" series and is a fabulous, lush CD that shouldn't be missed. The arrangements by Bebu Silvetti are incredible...the crisp rhythm sections of "Inolvidable" and "Mucho Corazon", the smoothness of "La Barca" and "Contigo en la Distancia"...and Luis Miguel sings every song magnificently.

Armando Manzanero's "Te Extraño" is sublime. It will make you weep for a lost love or one that has yet to arrive...It's truly one of the most moving, beautiful songs I've ever heard. It reaches that rare level called perfection. "Te extraño/ cuando camino, cuando lloro, cuando rio/ cuando el sol brilla, cuando hace mucho frío/ porque te siento como algo muy mío".

The booklet is minimal. It does contain lyrics (though not order of play) and the total running time is 44:12. This also comes as part of a 3 disc set, "Todos los Romances". Though maybe not as extraordinary as the 3rd in the series, "Romances", which I would place top 10 in any CD collection, it comes pretty close, and if only for "Te Extraño", this one is a must to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and very best of his "Romance" series.
I first discovered Luis Miguel with his breakthrough 1990 release titled "20 Años" when I visited Mexico while on vacation and I can't believe that I still play that release so frequently so many years later. It's simply pop at its best so shortly thereafter, I decided to give his first stab at Latin American standards a try and all I can say is "WOW." Luis Miguel brought a totally new the passion to timeless masterpieces and managed to make them as if they had been written exclusively for him. His amazing voice is elegantly complemented by the lush instrumentation that quickly made it one of my favorites. Songs like 'No Me Platiques Mas," "Involvidable," La Puerta," "La Barca," "Usted" and many others make this one of many favorite releases and easily earns 5 stars. He subsequently released others in this genre, while all very good, none compare to this amazing collection.

I'm not the biggest Luis Miguel fan, but I have to admit he is along with Marc Anthony, they are the greatest latin voices of our time.
This is one of those albums that you listen once, and you won't stop listening to it over and over again for months (or perhaps years).
The secret of the success of this album?... a combination of creativity and talent. Behind of Luis Miguel's powerful and soothing voice, there's a team of music masters who are mainly responsible for this fabulous creation.

The very essence of this album is re-creating some of latin music's finest and most beloved bolero classics of all time.
'El Maestro' Armando Manzanero did a great job in terms of production, along with contributing with some of his own classics chosen for this album.
Bebu Silvetti gave and outstanding contribution with the orchestral arrangements for this masterpiece, which capture the very essence of the melodies of these songs and take them to a whole new level.

5-0 out of 5 stars a jewel to make love to......
This album is wonderful! I heard the song, "No Se Tu", on the Speechless movie, and HAD to find it! I don't normally buy Spanish albums, but this? This was one you HAVE to have!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this album
This qalbum is truly a master piece. All the tracks are wonderful and the sounds are so relaxing and pleasing that you'll fall in love with this album from the first time you listen to it. Marco's soft voice and the way he sings the songs with such passion, really make you get into his music and take you to a place of comfortness and lovelyness. I can't say anything bad about this album because there really isn't any flaw in it. From the first track to the last one, this album guides you in such a way that is incredible. This artist makes you think about love and about things in life that you really only see in movies. You can tell that Marco Antonio writes his lyrics with a deep meaning that comes from the heart. This Album is only one of many that he has made that touch you and make your love stronger. I love music and specially the knid of music that I can listen to and relax and this album does that and then some. I highly recommend this album, even if you don't understand spanish. Just by listening to the sounds, specially the Violins, you can appreciate the album. This is truly one Latino artist, who should be topping all kinds of charts. Forget Ricky Martin, Ricky has nothing compared to Marco Antonio Solis. This is what real music is all about. Thanks a lot Marco for being so gifted and sharing your thoughts and feeling with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ay ay ay!
If you can understand Spanish: load the album on your iPod, lay down on the couch with good headphones, get taken away into a sweet sad world, and be in tears by track 5.

If you don't understand Spanish, I'm sure you'll still appreciate the sounds (and, if you're female and/or so inclined, the photos of Marco), and maybe you'll get inspired to learn some Spanish so you can enjoy the poeticism of the lyrics! ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!!...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great and Peculiar Production...
Alejandro Fernandez has said many times that he is always looking for "new sounds". We can see this on his musical productions, from "Muy Dentro De Mi Corazon" (mariachi/traditional) to "Me Estoy Enamorando" (boleros) to "Mi Verdad"(mariachi/traditional) to "Entre Tus Brazos" (pop), and finally "Origenes". The CD starts of with the nice sounding single "Tantina Pena" which heavily borrows flamenco sounds and rythms. The very talented poet/composer Fato made excellent contributions with the beautiful "Si Tu No Vuelves" and the inspiring "Duerme Tranquila" which adds that romantic-pop flavor to "Origenes". Beautiful lyrics coupled with rythm is savored with "Amor De Luna" and while a very poetic and sentimental "Come Pez En El Agua" adds a gracious touch to this production. The more traditional Mexican sounds are also found in the contributions made by the talented composer that is Manuel Monterrosas with "Ay Amor", the highly-rythmic and beautifully composed "Donde Vas Tan Sola" and "Tu Regresaras". Another welcomed contribution is by Roberto Cantoral with "Jamas Te Vi Tan Linda", which is truly an inspiring piece.

Overall, this musical production is a gem and quite peculiar. With different sounds and great musical interpretation by Alejandro, it is a definite addition to any music lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
Alejandro Fernandez is clearly one of the great romantic singers of his generation and this CD is a fabulous example of the modern fusion of ranchera with flamenco, jazz, and even Native American music. I must have heard "Tantita Pena" over a hundred times and I can't get tired of it. When I first heard it the flamenco guitar strains made me sit up and take notice as much as his voice did. The music video of this is on a DVD called "La Trayectoria" (see my review of that) and it is an amazing production.

"Pajaro Perdido", "Donde vas tan sola?", and "Ay, Amor!" are also musically interesting with beautiful lyrics. Anyone who hasn't investigated Latin music recently should probably start with this CD, which will create a very serious appetite for more. Lyrics included, along with some good photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lo mas suave que nunca!
I fell into purchasing this disc by listening to a Spanish radio station that was giving Tantita Pena a lot of air time. Like most everyone I kinda cringed, hoping I wasn't being suckered into buying another crummy album for one song.
Let me tell you, this entire album is pure dynamite! From the first song to the last (Las Mananitas, hidden on track 30) every track is first rate. The melodies are each unique and the care in production and delivery is patently obvious.
The origen of each song speaks volumes and who better to deliver the message with power and sincerity but Alejandro!
I would highly recommend Origenes, consider it an investment in fine music.

I don't even speak spanish and I like the vocals. Damn these foriegn singers have more skillz than britney spears, N'stink and gaystreet boys.

Where have all great american singers gone to? Stop the bubble gum insanity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alejandro Fernandez without Pedro Ramirez
You have his old albums? Wondered how he might sound if the songs he records are arranged by other people other than his father's team of writers, producers, and arrangers?
Well, this is what this cd is. One interesting arrenger on this cd , which I think is one of the best in the genre, is Eduardo Maguellanes. His arrangements are very beautiful yet I don't think Alejandro's voice fitted up to the arrangement. Other arrangements are done by Kiko Campos who is more of a pop arranger. Nevertheless, he did a good job in this cd.
THere is also an extra hidden track : Las Mañanitas. I think it is very bad. For some reason it leads me to be believe he tried to secularize the traditional song by taking out parts that include San Pedro and San Juan. If you get bothered by the original version because of that then get this version.
I don't know why this cd is called Origenes because the songs are not anything related to that word. ONe high note and praise is the arrangements in the cd which some are very new to mariachi. THis is not a ranchera cd. It is more like pop-balada ranchera which suits Alejandro Fernandez right.
I have seen him perform when he started with his father and once in Teatro Blanquita. Back then I saw promise but by now , if he cared, he should be at least some kind of tenor. His image does seem to have gotten better. 3 stars because of the beautiful arrangements. ... Read more

A bevy of high-profile guests pops up on Amor, Familia y Respeto --Sheila E., Chris Perez, Nu Flavor, Fito Olivares, eventalk-show host Cristina--but A.B. Quintanilla y los KumbiaKings remain front and center on their inspired debut album. Much like he didwith his late sister Selena, Quintanilla fuses the traditional cumbia soundwith reggae, rap, rock, and dance music on songs such as "Azúcar,""Fuiste Mala," and "Reggae Kumbia," turning the Tejano sound on its head. Thegroup also dabbles in old-school R&B on "Together," featuring vocals by thelate Roger Troutman, and"U Don't Love Me," a silky crossover-hit ballad. Amor, Familia y Respetoalso features "Oh No," a sweet cumbia cowritten by Selena that she never had thechance to record, but which her brother included here as a tribute. --JoeyGuerra

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Cumbia
This is one of my favorit CD's. My Bestfriend doesn't speek spanish but she loves this CD, it is a very dancible and upbeat CD. it has taken classic cumbia and made it more modern for the newer generation of listiners but it also interests older classic cumbia lovers too! this CD shows the changes SELENA was doing with her own music. A.B. has a great talent for writing and i can't wait for his next CD. He has taken the style he and Selena created and if she were still here she would ahve changed the style even more like this CD. this is a wonderfull CD,even though it is mostly in spanish I feel that it has potential in the english market, it is latin but not so that it can not be enjoyed in the anglo market. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great like always
I have to say this is by far one of my favorite Selena cd's because it has all of her spanish hits. I'm glad they did it is they any more to say. This has to be the first cd in your Selena collection if you are just starting out because it has what she is all about. Then go pick of the live cds because it her hits live and from there you decide.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one
If you have room in your budget for only one Selena CD, this CD is a good one to have.Personally, I prefer "ALL MY HITS, VOL. 1" because it includes the original version of my favorite "No Me Queda Mas" and does not include my least favorite "Techno Cumbia."However, if you really like or think you may really like Selena, then I would disagree that this CD is a good place to start. This is because all of Selena's original albums were so very good. Now that those original albums have been reissued, I would strongly suggest that you eventually add all of them to your collection, and avoid most of these new compilations as they contain very little that is new and are therefore unnecessary. The great thing about Selena's original albums is that nearly every song on them is just as good or better than the ones that keep turning up on these new compilations for the 5th or 6th time.I give this CD 5 stars because the music is so great, but you probably don't need it.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love it, but...
Every year since Dreaming of You in 1995, a new Selena compilation has been released. Sometimes I do think all of these CD's are a bit much, because the selections are almost always the same. Being one of the people who never knew of Selena until after her passing, I would love to hear some of her harder-to-find material (Sus Inicios/the Early Years, volume I compilation from 2000 was nice; but where are the others? Doesn't the "volume I" indicate a series with more to come)?

Ones opens with "No Quiero Saber" from Ven Conmigo.Even though it says 2000 mix next to the song, it sounds just like the original version, which I actually prefer. The CD ends with a beautiful medley featuring "Si Una Vez," "Amor Prohibido (my favorite Selena number)," and "Como La Flor."You'll also find the ballad she did with El Salvadoran singer Alvaro Torres entitled "Buenos Amigos," and the Spanish version of "Dondequiera Que Estes" with the Barrio Boyzz (the bilingual version can be found on Dreaming of You).

Nevertheless, all of these hits are wonderful and Ones is definitely a great starter CD for new fans, but I wouldn't have complained if the songs had at least been altered somehow and given a different flavor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Selena "Ones" is THE introduction to Selena
For real, it is.

Here's why it is: Only one remix, and it rocks. 19 non-remixed songs, only remastered for better sound clarity. All the tracks on this CD, from 1-19, are all on Selena albums recorded while she was still alive - Ven Conmigo, Entre a Mi Mundo, Live, Mis Mejores Canciones, Amor Prohibido. Including "Buenos Amigos," which was NEVER before on a Selena CD. If you wanted it, and you lived in the US, you either had to download it or order Alvaro Torres' album, "Nada Se Compara Contigo," which is an import.

If you've never heard a thing by Selena, and you're curious enough to want to buy a CD of hers, buy THIS one. You will not be disappointed...unless you're looking for rancheras, which are NOT on this CD. Looking for rancheras, then see her CD "Mis Mejores Canciones - 17 Super Exitos." ... Read more

Hofner is an only-from-Texas kind of Western swinger, hailing from the state's wide Czech belt, claiming Czech as his first language, and often singing his polkas, waltzes, and traditional tunes in that language. He also had the hit version of the traditional fiddle tune "Cotton-Eyed Joe," which has since become a must-play for any band on the Texas dance hall circuit, and turned in credible Bing Crosby-derived vocals on pop standards. And his bands, which included his brother Bash on steel and often the great hot fiddler J.R. Chatwell, swung with the best of 'em. --John Morthland ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A swinger swing, a fiddle lover delight
Hofner's Texas band really stay where Texas swing started without going to the electric guitar, steel guitar, electric mandolin, etc trio sound that Wills and later Spade Cooley made the standard in California based Western swing after the War. Here you have bright and sometimes hot fiddles, nice lead guitars, and a bouncing, always dancable rhythmn. There is some wise witticisms in some of the songs--I always remember My old guitar. Some of the Czech tunes here like the Jesse Polka are real classics. It's interesting that in Texas, the Bohemian and German influences blended in with the Mexican music--that where Flaco Jimenez's grandfather got the idea of playing the button accordian and any serious Tex Mex dance will have its polka.
Anyway, if you think you know about Western Swing and don't have this CD, you don't. Whatever you know, this is some nice music.

There is often the unsaid words about why Hofner never made it further. It was his bad luck to be named Adolph Hofner, and to play in an art form that peaked in popularity during World War II. I believe for a time Hofner changed his last name, but nothing helped him overcome this obstacle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings back the good old days
I'd forgotten how absolutely entertaining Hofner was. He's even better than I remember from my misspent youth, at places like Pat's Hall in Fredericksburg, Texas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Texas swing
This is actually better than I expected it to be. The Czech-language tunes don't resonate with me, I'm afraid, but the western swing tunes are very well done, with a solid sense of swing, perfect tempos, and fine soloing throughout. Nothing against the other players, but for my money, the fiddlers are the real standouts, especially Leonard Seago, who plays on most of the tracks, but also J.R. Chatwell. You can hear that the 78s these tracks were taken from were not exactly pristine, but the remastering, with the NoNoise system, leaves them sounding pretty doggone clean, and although it does leave them a little flat on the top end, they still sound good. The final track, a radio transcription complete with chatter and a beer advertisement, was a great inclusion. If you're building a western swing collection, this would certainly be a good addition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Slice of Texas
Texas is home to many different musical styles, and Adolph Hofner is one of those artists who seems to capture nearly every one of them in his recordings. What strikes me is that while many would label his music as "diverse," Hofner would probably have just called it "music." The fact that Hofner is not well known and celebrated nationally puzzles me, for I believe he is one of the great Texas recording artists of all time, which puts him in grand company.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Glimpse Into a Great Regional Culture: Czech Texas
The Czech recordings on this album provide a look back on a regional culture which is rapidly disappearing in Texas, that of Bohemian and Moravian Texas. While listening to these recordings, you may find your mind drifting back 50 years to a rural Texas dance hall. The smell of cotton fields mixes with the smell of cold beer and kolaches, while happy people dance to a beautiful Adolf Hofner waltz. You can feel the history in these recordings. ... Read more

It's bizarre at first to hear Mexican diva Thalia's biggest pop hits adorned with blaring horns and oompah beats, but she ultimately pulls it off on Banda Thalia Grandes Exitos. Thalia has enlisted a solid lineup of musicians and producers for the project, but this is hardly banda music in its purest form. Cumbia and pop rhythms regularly find their way into many of the tracks. The slick collection revisits--and reimagines--Thalia's most successful singles since joining EMI Latin in 1995, making for an uneven but interesting project. Tracks such as the already festive "Amor a la Mexicana" and "Por Amor" work well within the traditional banda setting, while ballads "Quiero Hacerte el Amor" and "Entre el Mar y una Estrella" drag a bit and are best showcased in their original arrangements. "Arrasando," the title track off Thalia's stellar 2000 album, is sapped of its energy, but the inclusion of traditional gems "Cuco Pena" and "La Revancha" is a genuine treat. Through it all, Thalia remains an authoritative--and irresistible--presence. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Her best yet!
I have to say that this is one of Thalia's best albums yet.
It was very creative of her to do her greatest hits in the genre of Banda. To take that risk as a pop artist and to pull it off for the most part is something that Thalia must be applauded for.
I also agree with that other reviewer who said that maybe it would've been better for her to have done an actual album of musica banda with NEW songs instead of re-doing her old ones.
She showed a lot of potential of being able to pull that off on the only 2 new songs on the album called cuco pena and la revancha.

All in all, a worthwhile best of CD to check out where Thalia shows she's got potential to evolve from her poppy sounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Alternative Album
I think it is a matter of taste whether you're going to like this CD or not. If you are a Thalia fan, a latin dancer, a Mexican or a lover of banda music, don't hesitate a second! In case you can't do without the loud beats of discotheque and modern orchestrations, this album doesn't do for you. If you are somewhere in between, think if modern songs orchestrated in a more traditional but festive way could be an alternative choice among your CDs and a way to let off steam and unwind. Personally, I love it! It was a surprise Thalia preferred to make a BEST OF collection by rerecording her greatest hits in another music style. This means "Thalia con banda" is a carefully done production through which Thalia had a chance to reinvent her songs and (why not) herself as a singer! Many of the songs remain catchy: "Amor A La Mexicana", "Piel Morena", "Rosalinda", "Por Amor", "Maria La Del Barrio", by far the best among really beautiful songs!! Couldn't they be beautiful? We are talking about a "greatest hits" album!! In a nutshell, this is an ALTERNATIVE album, the choice is up to you!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not normal greates hits, It's something Special...
Thalia made great work with this album. She changed her hits into something new! Hip-hopish ARRASANDO, Dance AMOR A"LA MEXICANA, or Ballad QUIERO HACERTE EL AMOR are now hmm... SO DIFFERENT!!! Very Latin, very mexican, very BANDA. It's not another GRATES HITS complication, it's album with "new old songs". Great Cd for Thalia, and Banbda style fans:)

This is a compilation of Thalia's Greates Hits in Banda. To truly appreciate what banda is though you wnat to venture on to the tracks called "La Revancha" and "Cuco Pena" those new songs for this cd is waht banda rally sounds like. The other songs are just her hits with banda which sound more like Pop Banda which is a great combination. Definitely this cd is a must have for fans and those who like banda and would like a different perspective for it than the same old. Way to go Thalia, this cd is a winner!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thalia con Amor a la Mexicana!!!
I must admit I'm not a pop fan, but I do like musica banda and let me say that this album blew me away. Thalia is a very talented singer, and when she decided to do a album con banda she knew exactly what she was doing. Combine Thalia's amazing, sexy voice with the instruments of authentic Mexican folk music and what you get is a superb, top quality album that lets us have a taste, a reminder of what our culture is all about-con Amor a La Mexicana! ... Tejano star Selena's death hasn't stopped label executives from releasing material or fans from snapping it up. According to the EMI Latin label, 1996's Siempre Selena features the last of her previously unreleased songs, "Siempre Hace Frio." The lavish, three-disc Anthology, however, is a must-have for its glimpses of Selena honing her vocal skills and sharpening her talent. Divided under the headers "Pop/English," "Mariachi," and "Cumbia," the set showcases hard-to-find early material and hits, including a club remix of the Diane Warren-penned "I'm Getting Used to You" and a disco-flavored take on "La Bamba." The liner notes offer background information on every song, and these discs also underscore the talents of Selena's brother, A.B. Quintanilla III. He gives many of the older tracks ("Dame Tu Amo," "Salta la Ranita") fresh arrangements that match the energy of Selena's more recent material. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anthology is a complete retrospective to cherish.
As those of you in Digital America have noticed, I am a devoted Selena fan. Anthology is categorized into three groups: Pop, Mariachi, and Cumbia. Each disc is a different window into Selena's far-reaching talent. She could just as easily belt out a love song in Spanish as she could a deep dance groove in English. The best way to experience this collection is to play each disc back to back. No two tracks are the same, yet her voice remains constant from one range to another. No female artist now or in the past, except maybe Patsy Cline, could hit a blues note so carefully and completely that you don't know you've been hit until you are under her spell.

When I bought this album in 1998, I was fairly unfamiliar with Selena's music, especially her earlier tunes. For any fan looking to dig back into the past, this collection is perfect. It is a true testament to Selena's versatility, and the genuis behind her producing brother A.B Quantinilla III.

The first disc that owns the heading "Pop/English" is full of just that, lilting ballads, thundering dance beats aned expert writing. Almost every track is dancable, including the geniusly remixed "Disco Medley" that focuses on the best-sung disco covers from Selena's original live perfomance. Along with a giddy cover of La Bamba and a firey rendition of "Getting Used To You", there are surprisingly rare English pop songs that are again a testamant to what Selena could have become in the English Market.

Under the "Mariachi" bill, the second disk is less impressive, but still emotional. The song "Dame Tu Amor" is one of the best in the anthology, and it's remixed version is far better than it's orignal conception. Unlike the first disk, the mariachi disk focuses mainly on Selena's early recordings, where talent is very evident, but not quite developed. While Selena's vocals are never flat, they are less interesting.

The Cumbia disk (the third disk) is a mix of giddy dance beats and remixed pop ballads that come to life. This seems to be the only disk in the collection that lives up to just what an "Anthology" means---the best of the best. With the dancable "La Llamada", the great vocal performance on "No Debes Jugar" and a little "Corazoncito" thrown in, it hits the jackpot.

Over all, the "Selena Anthology" is a collection of remastered, older material with a song for every taste. But unfortunately, it doesn't always live up to its name. If this is supposed to be the best of Selena, then where is "Como la Flor?" Where is "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" on the cumbia disk? And where, for god's sake, is "Dreaming of you" and "I Could Fall in Love" on the pop disk? It just doesn't make any sense. While this is certainly a must-have for Selena fans, and proves to be a great collection of great music, don't bill it as an "Anthology" if you don't truly have the best of the best.
Otherwise, kudos to the Quantinillas.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique Popurrí... Como el pétalo que se ha cayó
what with all the hype and fuss, praise and criticism surrounding this anthology, i really don't see how you can find fault: this album, though not definitively, because inevitably songs had to be omitted, is still nevertheless, the life of Selena: besides, if you feel this collection isn't authentic or definitive enough, there are plenty of her other songs available in numerous compilations, and in their original, un-remixed form. i think this album purposely omits some of the more obvious hits because they are already quite known and available on nearly every album of hers in some form or another. i think with anthology, her family wanted to create an unusual bouquet, one that would come as a surprise, albeit a welcome one, to fans, and possess a unique fragrance this album does. i am so glad the Quintanilla's have made this, even if many claim that everyone's just "jumping on the bandwagon" to make yet MORE money off of Selena's death- how cliché! if your daughter, who possessed an infinite ocean of talent exuding magnetism, radiance, unfathomable depth, and earth-shaking soul and passion, and brought joy to so many people, had her life taken away, you'd want to keep her memory alive, too. if not for yourself, than certainly for the fans, and what better way to do that than through re-creating and re-producing her music?? i personally, as one of many millions of her fans, cannot complain, i can only be comforted by the fact that a new compilation is released in her name each year, because in a strange sort of way, it does have a comforting effect on you, almost as if she is still alive, because selena was one of those rare people who radiated every bit of her energy, which translated through her voice to the audience, whether in recording or in live performance- she was that incredible. so to have a new piece of her musical legacy, is like keeping her flame burning- and no matter what the occasion, any album of hers is a joy to hear. with this particular reincarnation, "anthology", it helps the listener catch a rare glimpse of the singer in her early years as well as her most recent ones- yes some of her classics take on new and different forms, but it's still the same selena, spirit and all, and every song is like a rose petal. at first, the succession of songs from each disc to the next took some getting used to, because everything is so strikingly different as evidence for the immense versatility which she possessed, but then i came to realize that each piece, whatever the color, whatever the emotion it painted for you, turned out to create a beautiful rainbow- a soundscape for all the colors of her life, past and present, and then this album seemed to become a seamless masterpiece embodying the bright star that Selena was and still continues to be, for even in death, she is alive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Selena get's box set of songs
This has to be the coolest collection of Selena songs yet to date. Why because this has some rare Selena songs and ones that we all love and know and I think that is pretty cool. Thanks for bring the fans something we can enjoys for years to come.

Luis Miguel is to be admired for his steadfast homage to the classic Mexican bolero, the romantic ballad that emerged in the 1950s. Over the course of 10 years, he produced four albums of bolero remakes, and introduced them to new generations of music fans. But enough was enough. With 33, Luis Miguel returns to the torchy pop ballads that were his forte before his bolero phase. It's good to report that Miguel is in great shape. He plumbs emotional depths on the classy "Un Te Amo," where a lover appreciates small blessings, and "Devuelveme el Amor," on visiting old friends, solitude, and desperation. But it's not all gloomy. Dance fun is evoked on "Te Necesito," with its fingersnapping beats and backing vocals by Take 6, and "Con Tus Besos," with its thrilling big horns, crisp percussions, and energetic singalong choruses. Production values are excellent throughout, and Luis Miguel's vocals are full, strong, and emotive. Songwriters include Armando Manzanero, Juan Luis Guerra, and Kike Santander. This 11-track CD is convincing proof that even at 33, Luis Miguel is still at the top of his game. --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent!
I think that Luis Miguel is the best singer in the world. I love the rich tone of his voice, the way his voice follows along with each note. He's always flawless. This album contains the best ballads, ever.
In "Un Te Amo"...He sings with so much feeling (and effortlessly).
His voice is so strong and intense in "Nos Hizo Falta Tiempo".
"Devuelveme El Amor" - smooth as silk!
"Ahora Que Te Vas", "Que Tristeza", "Que Hacer". - all songs are very complex, with beautiful ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars Una voz inolvidable
Nunca hubiera podido aprender español si no habría descubierto a Luis Miguel. Me dio ganas de aprender. Les recomiendo que compren este disco y los otros que ha producido. BUY THIS CD! IT'S GREAT!

3-0 out of 5 stars El Sol de Mexico
If you are a LuisMi fan than you will probably like this CD; if not than you will probably bash it and say it is no good. Somewhere in between lies the real answear. Is it good? Yes. Is it great? No. Is it better than most of the romantic pop Latin music out there ? Yes. You must understand that LuisMi employs the best people to produce his music and the results are top notch productions. First of, it was nice last summer to see a release from him where romance wasn't in the title. I bought it up thinking he's moved on; after listening to the opening track, "Un Te Amo' I quickly realized the formula was still being used. It is a departure of sorts but a full circle anology might make more sense. This is the closest CD that he has released that has the pop luster of his wonderful disc entitled "Aries." This is clearly evident on the second track entitled "Con tus Besos" where the uptempo pop stylings of "Aries" come through like a flashback. About half of the songs are in the pop vein and the rest are more "Romances " like tunes. Some of the songs are just too gushy. Also some of them lament a lost love way too much which is an ongoing theme running throughout this disc. Don't get me wrong the lyrics to the boleros are by and large quite poetic and beautiful but some are just too sappy. On "Ahorra Que Te Vas" where he states "si algun dia te vas al mar recuerdate de mi" (if someday you go to the ocean remember me) everything is fine until the syruppy lyrics go on to say later "llorandote en mi almohada pienso en ti"(crying over you on my pillow thinking of you). Come on!! Crying on your pilow? Was he biting it too? Was he on his stomach and kicking his feet too? Guys don't cry in bed over women. None that I know anyway. Sorry ladies even LuisMi wouldn't do that. Anyway this is the type of corniness that goes way beyond the sesitive male and makes for a drippy song. Back to the good stuff though. The popish formula of songs like "Vuelve, " Eres " and "Con Tus Besos" are uplifting , in spite of their melancholy theme, with their fine chorus and strong arrangements that gets you going with their lush jazzy and orchestral backing. Overall this is not his best by his standards but pretty darn good anyway. A three star LuisMi disc is a four star disc for most other artists in this genre. If you are a die hard fan get it, otherwise try "Aries" or one of the gazillion "Romances" discs to see if this is for you.

This third compilation of Selena's material is hyped by EMI officials as being a complete collection of her biggest hits. It is no exaggeration. All 16 tracks are hits, and the disc includes her biggest numbers, such as "Amor Prohibido," "Como la Flor," and "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom." The CD features her English-language hits as well: "I Could Fall in Love," "Dreaming of You," and "Missing My Baby." There's also "Disco Medley Pt. II (Last Dance/The Hustle/On the Radio)," recorded live at the Houston Rodeo. Selena and the band sound sharp and on the money. "On the Radio" impacts in particular, through its lyrics about love conducted in secret--a situation that applied to Selena and her guitarist Chris Perez before they were married in 1992. --Ramiro Burr ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!
I saw the film Selena for the first time this past November and immediately fell in love with her. I went out and bought this CD and i must say it's great. Before i bought this cd the only Selena song i knew of was Dreaming of You and now i know them all. I really can't fault any song on this album and in my opinion her Spanish songs are the best(even though i can't understand all the words). Como La Flor, Amor Prohibido, No Debes Jugar and Bidi Bidi Bom Bom are my fav!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
The reason why I love this album is because of the live track and for the first time we can hear the opening song to the live last concert because on the soundtrack the broke the song up into two parts. I didn't like that so when I found out that the whole song was on this album I was so happy. The other songs on here are good but I love it because of the live track.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Luis Miguel very much (see my review for Luis Miguel VIVO). His singing and styling is amongst the best of all Latin American singers. I have all his albums. I've gone to see him live three times in the last 12 years. My quibble is that he is relying too heavily on the boleros, when he should really exploit his talent with singing mariachi songs...the few songs he has done on his live albums demonstrate he can really do the genre a favor and give his loyal fans something to look forward to. Perhaps he does not think he can compete with the more established mariachi singers. I firmly believe with his range, class and worldwide prescence he can really open this musical door for fans worldwide who would never hear mariachi music otherwise. I listened to this CD and based on what I heard, I did not purchase it. It is not as good as any of the previous Romances and quite frankly, it is starting to sound a bit tired. LUIS MIGUEL, QUIERO OIRTE CANTAR: EL REY, TU SOLO TU, AMANECI EN TUS BRAZOS, LA BIKINA, Y, SI NOS DEJAN, LASTIMA QUE SEAS AJENA, VOLVER VOLVER, AY JALISCO NO TE RAJES, Y MUCHAS OTRAS LINDURAS DEL MARIACHI CON TU TOQUE ESPECIAL Y SENTIMIENTO EN UN DISCO Y NO EN VIVO! There, I've given him the playlist for his next release!

4-0 out of 5 stars Saved By The Voice
In his new recording, "Mis Romances", Luis Miguel is true to form mixing classic boleros with contemporary ballads, giving his fans the sound that has made him the most successful Latin crooner in history. As is expected the production of this album is impeccable. Accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Luis Miguel's voice soars and seduces at all the right moments. Interpretations of classic boleros are given a fresh new sound that attracts new generations to songs written decades ago. It is the same formula that Luis Miguel used with such success on his previous bolero albums, Romance, Segundo Romance and Romances with even the new title using the same formula. (How many different ways can you say romance?)

The song list includes several classic boleros such as "Tu me acustumbraste", "El tiempo que te quede libres" and the tango "Volver". "Como Duele" is a beautiful composition that superbly blends Luis Miguel's timeless vocals with the flow of the orchestra's music. Luis Miguel's voice soars in the lively "Corazon Amorcito". Probably the best song on the album is the gorgeous "Al que me siga", which appears to be destined as another Luis Miguel classic. The two up tempo songs on the album, "Amor" and "La ultima noche" do not fare as well. "Amor", the worst of the two, was the first single of the album that was released. As with many of Luis Miguel's recent up tempo songs it sounds dated and out of touch with contemporary sound. "La ultima noche" suffers from much of the same blandness with the exception of a kicking trumpet solo played by Arturo Sandoval towards the end of the song. It is a shame that the same rhythm was not used throughout this song, which would have been a breakthrough for Luis Miguel's music.

In fact the one glaring weakness with this album is that it sounds all too familiar. The same formula that has made Luis Miguel a household name throughout most of Latin America has also placed him in a cookie cutter mode of album production. That is not to say that his recent albums have not been lush productions worthy of praise but they are also sounding more and more dated. Luis Miguel's last two albums, "Amarte Es Un Placer" and "Mis Romances" are excellent works but they do not approach the classic status attributed to his first two bolero albums, "Romance" and "Segundo Romance".

Up to this point Luis Miguel has resisted the temptation to crossover into English language pop as so many recent Latin artist have. Depending on how "Mis Romances" is received Luis Miguel may find himself at a point where he either tries new sounds or risks becoming stale.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely memorable!!!!!!!
I met a woman, an extremeley beautiful and vibrant woman. and it was she who introduced me to the wide world of luis miguel. damn her to go to hell.!!!! i fell in love with her and i think she fell in love with me. everything about her is so new. im in elementary once again and having a mad crush on the girl with the curly hair, in the first row. god help me.luis miguel i hate you. i hate you to the core. and i hope you continue to destroy young hearts like ours. you brought love back. back where it belonged in the first place.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best romances ever! The other 3 donot compare!5 stars
This album is the best out of all the Romances collection. The first two albums are probably more popular, but fans need to hear this one. His voice has matured and the musicians in this album sound better than the Los Angeles and London philharmonic orchestra. Fans need to buy this c.d. and play it over there entire home. The first song "que sabes tu" is unbeliveable. It's a breathtaking song."Amor" is the best pop song he has done his entire career. I hope he plays this song indefinatly in concert."perfidida" composed romanticcally. This album is 5 stars and 5 more. This album establishes Luis Miguel as the artist of our time. No one can come near him. Marco Antonio Solis,Enrique Inglesias, Julio Iglesias and ricky martin will never come near him in talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brillante
Luis Miguel es sencillamente un artista de excelencia. Ha llegado al punto exacto de madurez. Sin dejar las baladas pop, ha marcado un sello en la música latina. Even if you dont understand spanish, but you like ballads, you should have this CD.
A mi modo de ver, él debió haber incluido algunos temas mas movidos en este disco, pero creo que el título no lo merecía así.

Es un disco profundo, con mucho , pero mucho romanticismo, como para escucharlo en una cena con velas :-) ... Read more
