You generally don't have to listen too hard to hear what's on the mind of Los Angeles music collective Ozomatli. The multi-faceted band is rarely subtle in its politics or its incorporation of countless Latin traditions as well as modern rock, jazz, pop and hip-hop. But on the band's third album, Street Signs, the addition of the Prague Symphony and the distinct influence of Arab and North African music certainly qualify as ambitious curve balls. Announcing its intentions from the get-go, album-opener "Believe" starts with a Rai-style vocal melody before finishing with a gritty rap as Bollywood-style strings provide a sweeping backdrop throughout. Never lingering in one place for long, the band quickly goes from there into some of the catchiest Latin Rock this side of Santana's "Smooth" on such gems as "Love And Hope" and "(Who Discovered) America?" before tearing off in other directions. These fearless hip-hop bambinos truly go their own way, saying what they want, playing what they want. --Tad Hendrickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning mixture of sounds the OZO way....
I'm only a recent Ozo fan, and have to say that I have missed out on numerous chances to see this band over the years. I am fortunate enough to have seen them once, and was blown away by their raw energy, and mixture of latin, funk, hip hop, rock among many different styles of music. I was immediately hooked.

With their third full release, it's easy to hear Ozomatli's influences taken to a new level. The middle eastern underlay on tracks like "Believe" and "Who's To Blame?" featuring Chali 2na is apparent. The spanish guitar on "Santiago" soothes the soul. The Latin Jazz sound of "Nadie De Tira" featuring Eddie Palmieri on piano is pure bliss, not to mention the beautiful intro - "Doña Isabelle". The funk rock "Saturday Night" will get any party started and the Orishas like title track is a standout.

Overall "Street Signs" is a manifestation of what Ozomatli are all about - making funky, shake your ass music. Ozo have already proven to be one of the best bands in the world, live or in the studio, and this album is just another verification of this fact.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
i love it! this cd just like the others is amazing a must for ozo fans!it is different but familiar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eclectic, Amazing
Yes, it is far better to see this band live, but this album does not dissappoint. I've been an Ozo fan for a long time and I really like the direction they took with this album. It is an eclectic mix of genres. I think the mix of the band members contributes to the mixing of musical genres in an innovative way. The sounds produced here from hip hop to ballads, middle eastern to brazilian are fresh and new. They are definitely ahead of their time, and I can't wait for the rest of the world to catch up to Ozomatli!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ozomatli always impresses!
The one thing about Ozomatli is that you must see them perform live. However, if that's not possible, then buying the cd is the next best thing and "Street Signs" is what you need. With so many musical styles on this one cd, it's impossible to be bored. There's hip-hop with "Saturday Night," a Cuban drive in "Nadie Te Tira," and a flameco-flair with "Te Estoy Buscando," just to name a few. If you're familiar with Ozo, then you know what great music they're capable of; if you've never heard of them before, then you need to get to know this band and their music. Even if you don't understand Spanish, their music has something for everyone and their energy is contagious. Bottomline is "Street Signs" will lead down many roads, each one more enjoyable than the one before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ozo Packs Plenty of Surprises
After owning three Ozomatli cds (which includes this new release as well) they seem to almost reinvent themselves each time. This is an excellent thing. While some ingredients may seem familiar in each album, there is tons of new sounding material and all sorts of artistic experimentation utilized each time in good doses! I cannot pin it down exactly about what it is, but this third release has a much more coherent and smoother track flow. In each album the listener never knows what type of cultural or global influences the group will incorporate on that particualr project. These artists incorporate a healthy plethora of cultural melting pot influences to the nth degree.Ozo seems to know the secret to what is essential for them to succeed and produce such captivating music and "food for thought" lyrics.Ozo knows how to mix in plenty of vacationing/travelling escapism as well in some of their tunes; Just listen to a track like Santiago and tell me that no person in their right mind would not be influenced to wanna go or would like to go to places such as Cancun, Rosarito Beach, Baja, San Diego or even a Latin nightclub in L.A. While they may sing about life, global, social, political or any kind of issues, it's the music and talent aplenty (diversity) that makes the grade (possibly exceeds it) ! It's all universal baby !... ... Read more

Marc Anthony comes on like a suave, less jumpy alternative to Ricky Martin on this mostly English-language album. Having already introduced itself to the pop mainstream with the salsa-tinged single "I Need to Know," Marc Anthony offers several other obvious crossover hits, ranging from the Rodney Jerkins-produced Latin-funk fusion of "She's Been Good to Me" to the lovelorn midtempo ballad "When I Dream at Night." However, Anthony's agreeably keening voice is too often applied to the sort of colorless adult-contemporary material typical of Michael Bolton and Mariah Carey mainstay Walter Afansieff, who produces or coproduces three tracks here. The result is often more interesting in sociological terms--Anthony fans who, like the star, were born to Latino parents in America are as sure to eat this disc up as his new Caucasian admirers--than in musical ones. Ain't that America? --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Young Talent
I heard Marc Anthony for the first time about 4 months ago(I lead a sheltered life) and I was literally blown away by "My Baby You" and "When I Dream At Night". Those two songs, especially, pack so much raw emotion that I found myself in tears listening to the sheer power of his lyrics(which incidentally, he wrote)! Now, I can't seem to get the C.D. off my player-there's no room for even Santana anymore! His other renditions including "Dimelo" and "Da La Vuelta" are truly inspired even though it helps to be bilingual but, not entirely necessary. The music and the message is universal and his presentation is pure genius. I went to see him in concert here in San Antonio and it was the best I have ever witnessed-his band is awesome! Buy this C.D.-just be prepared to have your heart pierced(corazon espinado) and have plenty of tissues at hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD is incredible (by the way, thanks Rosie...)
I can't believe Marc Anthony.... he and this CD are astounding. First of all, why didn't it get more acclaim than it has? This certainly has to be one of the best CDs of the year. The music on this album is absolutely beautiful. Marc has an incredible voice... certainly one of the best in the music world today. He puts so much effort and emotion and power into his music on this CD, once you start listening he captures you. I just got this CD in the mail today (from Amazon, of course) and can't get over how extraordinary it is! He certainly surpasses all other Latin/crossover/whatever albums by his astounding music on this album. This music smoothly and effectively mixes the Latin style with today's pop style. By the way, I also love the use of other musical instruments (especially the violin chords in "I Need You to Know") on the album. So many times in today's pop music beautiful instruments, such as the string instruments, are ignored. Well, anyway, as you can see, I could probably go on for hours writing how much I like this CD and how it's just so awesome... but I hope you will believe me after all I've written and give this CD a try! It is definitely worth purchasing; you won't regret it.

(By the way, I just want to thank Rosie O'Donnell for "introducing me" to Marc Anthony. I remember her talking non-stop a couple of months ago how she loved this album -I now see why- and I thought, who is Marc Anthony? After she had him on her show, though, an heard him sing, I knew that I was missing out on something... so thank you, Rosie!)

5-0 out of 5 stars marc anthony is a great performer
i never really thought that marc anthony would sound really great until i saw his performance on tv. his song 'i need to know' doesn't really show much of his talent until i heard my baby you. he sang it with full emotion and power. he sounded really great. he cried during the performance, which also make me wanna cry. can't wait for his next album. never really been a real fan of him until now

3-0 out of 5 stars Great selection, Lousy Recording
Marc Anthony's voice is great, the rhythmn of the music is great, but whoever was responsible for collaborating the music with the voice did a very poor job. At times you have to be stretching your ears to hear Anthony's sexy, mellow voice. The musice tends to drown his voice, even his back-up singers are more audible than he is. It's as if he was on one continent with an ampliphier trying to reach the rest of his band on another continent. Did they listen to this cd before releasing it? I hope they re-do it with all the same pieces but with a better mixture of voice to instruments.

5-0 out of 5 stars to my marc athony
marc anthony this is one of the best cd i heard from you yet. this prove you have talent and you are willing to share with all of us. i will continue to buy, listen to your albums for as long as you keep singing and giving us your voice to hear. i feel proud that i can look up to a spanish person with joy in my heart and know that when i put a cd on everything is ok. so keep up the good work marc anthony you are and always will be the best.@~~~)~~~ god bless u marc ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible! Wonderfully eclectic!! Great dance music!!!
This first CD by Pepe & the Bottle Blondes is the most wonderfully eclectic mix of latin, swing and show tunes I've heard in a long time. Every cut is a delight and emminently danceable. Pepe's voice is amazingly rich -- seemingly able to handle everything from deep baratones to high C's; and he's backed up expertly by the three Bottle Blondes.

In addition, he's managed to put together an incredible mix of masterful musicians from percussion to horns to flutes to classical guitar. The compositions are tight and well-conceived.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funtimes on a CD
Aight, if you are looking for interesting and fun music with a distictive Latin flair then this is the one to get. The music has the ability to make any room start jumping. If you love to dance to Latin music you are in heaven. But beyond that the song selection shows the diversity and breadth of the musicians. One of the most fun (there's that word again)songs is Number 4. It sounds like an old-style swing song, except for the fact that the lead vocalist is singing in Chinese...really really cool. There is also a really cool version of Sing Sing Sing. My personal favorite is Rumba de 5 Kilos. If you enjoyed the music of Pink Martini then this cd is a must buy, the same quality but much more danceable. And if you really like this cd then you should pick up Sympathique by Pink Martini (another group put together with Pepe Raphael).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is a great CD! I hope he comes out with a new one soon - it's been too long. He is also a wondeful live performer. Fun for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seriously amazing sound
After hearing La Soledad on the Pink Martini CD, I had to find out more about the amazing voice of Pepe Raphael. What a bonus to find out this man has a wacky sense of humor! It is not typical to find a performer who can sing a delicately beautiful song like La Vals de Tomas, then turn around and shake his booty a la Boom Boom. Everything he sings is exquisitely perfect for the style of the song. This CD is on permanent rotation in our car. The opening song, Rhumba de 5 Kilos, simply has it all! My 6 year old son acts out all the voices and rhythms - he has never reacted to music this way. The whole CD is a treat I never get tired of, and I look forward to the next one..........

5-0 out of 5 stars A flawless polished gem that radiates sunshine
No shortcuts taken on this one, everything has been tweaked to perfection. Great latin-infused & swinging songs, arranged & delivered by solid musicians & impassioned singers, with style and contagious energy, joy and humor. Even the package art and liner notes are full of color & fun. It doesn't get better than this.
Pepe & the Bottle Blondes are to release "Latenight Bob" this Fall 2004, I would buy it hands down & sound unheard. ... Read more

Singer/songwriter Juan Luis Guerra applies his tropical big band magic on Christian-themed tunes on this CD but the result is the same--infectious rhythms that induce dance fever. Guerra's strength has always been his seamless blend of the spicy salsa and carnivalesque merengue rhythms and layering the music with elaborate vocal and horn arrangements to produce irresistible melodies. Guerra penned all 12 songs here; thay all deal thematically with God and devotion. Highlights include "Eres," which blends blues sentiment and gospel fever. Crisp piano and powerful horns drive the title track and "Las Avispas," a tune about walking with renewed confidence. Acoustic guitars introduce "Tan Solo he Venido," a mellow song about willing to give it all up for the Lord. As a singer, Guerra in top shape, his vocals conveying the variety of emotions from pain and longing to hope and celebration. As a bandleader Guerra hasn't lost his edge. He is a musical genius who knows how to fuse complex arrangements with tuneful hooks. --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ruben - please bring out another salsa album!
Spanish Harlem Orchestra are really hitting hard with this album. I really enjoyed it. For a 2004 salsa album it is sensational. Compared to the mediocre, formulaic, repetative pap (I mean timba, salsa moderna, salsa romantica, etc) that is coming out nowadays it is brilliant.

But how good is it really? Let's be clear, if you know your salsa and loved the salsa dura coming out of NY from the 70's then you'll like this album (maybe even alot) but you won't love it (BTW, I'm only 27 and was born in Sydney). It is a different sound SHO are trying to create. But here's where you will relate to it... the album swings! It swings from the beginning to the end. It gets credit just for that.

The band is tight, i'll give them that. This is a fully professional band and they play like one. They are qualified and get much love.

Lyrically, it's a little bland for my liking. Mainly songs about partying and dancing... like I said, if you are a fan of salsa dura with it's hard lyrics and it's depictions of street life, political struggles, and relationships then you may find the lyrical content a bit one sided and dull.

I'm not sure that the fact many songs are remade is something bad. At the end of the day most people will not recognise these songs... but further if they do write their own songs and they are not good enough it doesn't make much sense to release sub-standard material. On the flip side, some songs shouldn't be touched - Tito Puente's original "Cuando Te Vea" from Dancemania was better. The fact is no band or singer could have done justice to what Puente and Santos Colon did with this song back in '58 (and i'm not even a big Puente fan).

If you know nothing about salsa (except maybe Marc Anthony or DLG) then this album gets a huge recommendation. BUY IT!!! I think it's a great entry point to salsa that swings - salsa con clave. You will enjoy it.

Album highlights - One name...Ruben Blades. Here is where this album shines. Ruben is at his sonero best in this album. He does 4 tracks and nails every one of them. I have never heard Ruben phrase as well as he does in this one. You can really tell he has missed singing salsa and you must suspect that if there was money to be made in salsa he would go back to it. He is just spectacular in every song. (...).

Ruben even wrote the bonus track (which is a new composition) "tu te lo pierdes". IT IS THE BEST TRACK. A new Ruben Blades written and sung song being the best track should not surprise anyone. Apparently it was written before the SHO project came up and a demo version by Ruben was played on a Puerto Rican radio station a while back and it has been bootlegged (Read the www.descarga.com article on this SHO album). The track is about a guy who goes to a street full of call girls and asks for a freebie... it is champagne comedy and vintage blades. You even hear Ruben with his impersonations of the drunk man. Oh man!

It's interesting... you'd think I had forgotten it was a SHO release. But the fact is Ruben's new song and his 4 tracks as sonero really do stand apart. Ruben takes over and makes his mark. He is a legend at the top of his game on this one.

RUBEN... COME BACK WITH ANOTHER SALSA ALBUM!!!

For salsa dura lovers, buy this just for Ruben. For newbies, buy it because it swings!!!

OTHER RECOMMENDATION: I'd recommend the new Sonora Poncena album Back To The Road (I think it's an independent release so may be hard to get). The legends from Puerto Rico are back. The best salsa album i've heard in years.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!
I never really listened to much salsa before this album. none of it really every piqued my curiosity. A friend of mine, however, forced me to check out this record and damn am I impressed. Everything about this album screams DAAAAAAAAAANCE!!!!! From the tight, grooving percussion to the wailing brass instruments, this disc will make any music lover shake their asses. And as to the comment above about no orginiality? thats BS my friends. I did a lil research and it turns out that 5 of the tracks ARE original, with one of them being written by Ruben Blades himself. OH YEAH!!! check this one out, it's worth your time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good band, a shame they can't play original pieces.
If you are tired of listening to the same soft salsa that is out there, then this is for you.
If you are looking for originality, then don't bother.
The musicians put together in this album are the top in their genre. Too bad that there is no creative mind to exploit this power with original cuts. All songs are covers.
The album only adds the same ole stuff many groups out there have done lacking the creative mind and is just another dull salsa recording.

It is a 5 for the straight salsa sound, a -3 for originality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Salsa Gold...I nominate it for Best Salsa CD of 2004!
The title of my review says it all. I checked this CD out after the salsa aficionado website Descarga.com (www.descarga.com) gave it high-praise. I agree with their assessment....this CD can be easily nominated to be among the top 5 salsa CDs of 2004, (and I'd make it THE CD, if I was deciding).

Where does it fit in the large Salsa panorama? This is New York, Jimmy Bosch's band meets Eddie Palmieri/Tito Puente's large salsa ensembles. In fact, Jimmy Bosch, Ruben Rodriguez, and other New York "first call" Salsa musicians make part of this All-Stars crew. The arrangers for the CD include such recognized masters as Marty Sheller, and others.

One other thing...this CD isn't for softie, "erotic salsa" lovers. One thing that I came to appreciate from it is that it is PURE ENERGY, from the first track to the last one. Mostly straight-ahead salsa (with the occasional son-montuno, bolero, and rumba rhythms sprinked on it). The band is loud, creative, and tight. You will snap your fingers to it....guaranteed.

And, I haven't even reached the biggie....the CD features the participation of Salsa Legend, "The Poet of Salsa", Ruben Blades on several tracks, marking his return to "street salsa", after Ruben's long experimentation with political Salsa and his creative immersion into World music styles.

What else do I have to say? You've got Ruben Blades, an All-Stars New York Crew, top Salsa arrangers, and a commitment to hit you, the listener, with pure, unadulterated, HARD Salsa.

You ready to dance? Buy this one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD
This is the first and only Salsa CD I've ever bought. I got interested in salsa after listening to the salsa music channel. My baby likes being danced to salsa. This CD is so good that not only do I dance my daughter to it, I dance to it on the treadmill, around the living room, everywhere! It's fantastic! I don't know if I'll ever buy another salsa CD. I don't think I need another one - this one satisfies my salsa cravings. There's no way you can listen to this CD without dancing. Easily 5 stars out of 5. Great CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars "For those who want the heat! "
Sonora Carruseles delivers this hot spicy CD with heat to spare! If you are one who makes claim to being a Salsa dancer then this CD is a dream come true. You're gonna love this CD!
This collection of songs is by far their best work to date.
As for production values on this CD? it's top class!. One can easily hear the fine
recording and mixing quality that went into the making of this gem of an album!
Wow! I'm having trouble keeping still while trying to type this review! I'm listening with cans on!
To write this CD review is not only pleasurable, but enjoyable if only I could stay still!
"Heavy Salsa", gladly gets a Big Green light. One will never regret owning this rare gem!
So, you say you like Hot Sauce?, well here it is at it's finest! Enjoy.

PS. This one's gonna make you crank-up the AC!

5-0 out of 5 stars great salsa dance
As my wife said, you can lose calories just listening to this music. It is get up and move around music in pure salsa style. The last two tracks fall flat, but everything up to that point is driving Salsa dance.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Necessary Evil
Unlike other reviewers, I cannot stand to listen to this Cd anymore. Any time I hear a song from this Cd at the club, I have a strong tendency to roll my eyes. I know, so why 4 stars?

Because this Cd is the ultimate party Cd. The ONLY way you could not have heard "Al Son de los Cueros", "Micaela", or "El Pito" is if you've been dancing in a cave. They get played in the club all the time, because the tracks are up-tempo, high energy cuts w/catchy melodies and coros that stay in your head for days. Yes indeed, this cd is very infectious. Guaranteed to get a party started......well, unless you've got a lot of folks like me there.

In fact a lot of Sonora Carruseles Cds are like this one, so much so that this is the only one I would buy. Unfortunately, they have found a "recipe for success" and are scared to break the mold. Every song comes out blasting at the same break-neck speed from beginning to end, and its usually a cover of someone else's song. It would be nice to see them come out with some original stuff!

Anyway, buy it, because everyone needs a copy of this Cd. But be VERY careful about overplaying it.....you'll hate yourself forever if you do!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't get sick of this music!
Probably the best salsa CD you'll ever buy. Don't miss on this one. ... Read more

Yerba Buena draws upon salsa, Cuban son, jazz, Latin rock, hip-hop, Afro-beat, and club culture to skillfully weave its hip, sexy and infectious dance floor grooves. Led by Venezuelan immigrant Andres Levin (the principal producer of the Red Hot + Riot Fela tribute) with other members from Cuba, New York City and St. Thomas, this multi-cultural combo’s debut covers all the bases: fantastic production, skilled rappers, diva-like vocals and an endless multi-ethnic groove that erases all rhythmic boundaries. Tailor-made for hot summer nights of dancing, the poppy "Guajira (I Love U 2 Much)" opens the album with a catchy sing-along chorus sung in English. The band then follows with the manic Nuyorican boogaloo of "Tu Casa, Mi Casa." Yerba Buena is no less compelling when the band cranks up the Afro-beat-style choruses on songs like "Rompe El Cuero," which hit with the visceral impact of a Mack truck. A fully formed and promising debut, President Alien is as imaginative as it is addictive. --Tad Hendrickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars HOT ...
This has got to be the new sound of Latin music . . . or, should I say world music . . . or, maybe just some GREAT get of your A.. and shake that thang music!

Yerba Buena (translation: Good Herb) has captured so many different influences that it's hard to pin-point exactly where it's roots are . . . but, that doesn't really matter . . . once you listen to songs such as Guajira (I love U 2 Much), La Gringa, Solito Me Quede, Electric Boogaloo, Wassamatter Baby?, Follow Me and Rompe el Cuero, you forget exactly where you are yourself, and you realize that you have entered "Planeta Yerba" . . . a soulful, funky, spiritual space . . . Where the voice of Xiomara Laugart and the sax of Ron Blake carry you higher than the highest highs . . . Where the bass grooves of Sebastian Steinberg and guitar licks of Andres Levin make you dig your heels a bit deeper . . . and where Yerba Buena serves you a dish-full of some of the tastiest , meatiest music since . . . well, no one really!

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this album
I caught this group performing on the "Orlando Jones Show" in August 2003 and couldn't wait to buy the album. All I heard was "Guajira (Ilove you too much)". That's all it took. I bought the album on Amazon and I haven't taken it out of my CD player since. All the songs are different and original. I never ealized how much I like salsa till now.
I'm so excited that now I'm going to be checking out some Celia Cruz and Tito Puente albums preferbly the ones they made together. A whole new world has opened up to me.
Thank you, Yerba Buena for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars President Alien
I am originally from Africa so my taste varies musically from hip-hop,jazz,classical through african rhythms.Getting this Cd introduced me to a whole new vibe especially if you are african in the diaspora.President alien is soulful, infectious and has an earthy afro-freshness to it.To all the new initiates this CD is a must for all people.YERBA BUENA!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars One hot album
Wow! That is all I could say after listening to this album for the first time. I first heard Yerba Buena on the Orlando Jones show when they performed "Guajira (I Love U 2 Much)" I dont normally buy CDs but I liked that song so much I went ahead and ordered it. Turns out, the song that made me buy the album is one of the weakest on the album. With sweet latin sounds, this album just makes you want to shake your hips. Buy this album! You wont be sorry!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun & Infectious
This album is great! Every song is enjoyable. The beats are fun and make you want to dance. A great CD for keeping yourself entertained on long car rides or on the way to the clubs. A great mix of many influences which smack of infectious Latin-Afro flavor. Beware if you don't have tinted windows in your car- this CD can make you look like an idiot to other drivers because it will make you dance and belt out the songs in your seat!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Tito Puente CDs available
This is easily one of the best Tito Puente CDs availabe. A compilation of some of Tito's best songs, these versions inspire awe and intense dancing. In addition, the notes by Joe Conzo succinctly detail Puente's life from the beginning of his musical career (or at least by the time Tito was 13 ... ), Tito's influences, playing with Machito, to the Navy in WWII, to the Palladium era and beyond.

Even just the mention of the infamous and influential Palladium establishes the authenticity of the biography, the music and the album. Within the New York Mambo scene, abundant reference is still made to the Palladium, both to the music and the dancing (which cannot exist without each other). Conzo notes that "Ran Kan Kan" was first recorded in 1949 -- a fact that many of the people 'in the know' today are not familiar with.

This CD is so good that for a while, it was the first thing I wanted to hear in the morning and the last music I wanted to hear at night. Don't miss this one!

Thanks go first and foremost to the creators and second to those who chronicle the music, the musicians and the culture. The growth in this art achieved by the next generation will only be possible because they learned from you.

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Great Musical Talent
Tito Puente Made Incredible Music. The Grooves&Arrangements were Ahead of Their Time. You Feel The Emotions&Vibes all The way Thru here.his Music was World Music. The Musicians are Great as well.it's very Essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars You gotta dance, you can't help it
I love this album. I have a bunch of Tito's stuff, close to all of it, I imagine. (I don't think anyone has every Tito album, not even Tito.) This one's nearly as hot as his 50's releases. He just gets more tasteful and refined without damping his red-hot latin soul. And I love Carlos, but this is how Oye Como Va is SUPPOSED to sound

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Puente is a exellent music artist
Mr. Puente is an exellent music artist and not only is his music very addicting but he is quite a comic when performing live shows I definitly give Tito five stars because he is truly a great musician, and a shout out ta SR. SHORTY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Latin music lovers watchout, this is a great CD
I became a fan of Tito and Latin music after listening to this wonderfully ecclectic CD. Being a musician myself, I was in awe of the great players and Tito's leadership. The beats are fantastic, guaranteed to move you. Buy it, and try it, I guarantee you will not be disappointed! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine sampler of Franco-Caribbean musical styles
A nice, smooth set of modern pop songs drawn from the French-speaking islands of Guadeloupe, Haiti and Martinique, lingering on the more tuneful and diverse end of the Caribbean musical spectrum. For someone like myself, who quickly tired of the manic, monotonous landslide of "soca" and "zouk" records during the 1980s, this disc came as a pleasant surprise. It's very listenable and engaging, a nice selection for someone looking for some accessible, poppish world music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The price is right
Why can't more CD's be priced like this fine offering from the Verve vaults?
For the cost of a couple of gallons of gasoline this music will take you further and you'll get plenty of mileage out of these classics. Beginning with the Carnegie Hall live recording by Dizzy Gillespie of "Manteca" in 1961, this disc will either take you down memory lane or set you on a new path of jazz discovery. Jazz means many different things to many different people, often discredited as being too cerebral or just plain high music, jazz often gets a bad rap. There is no clear definition because like many other genres there are many sub categories. Within the broad context of jazz this disc is diversified . Several great songbirds are featured including the marvelous, so nice the used here twice, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald(two songs too), Betty Carter and Astrud Gilerto. Unlike the remixed versions featured on "Verve/Remixed 2," the complete songs display the full spectrum and range of depth of some these artists. For example, Nina Simone's vocals on "Sinnerman"show the gospell influenced style more clearly than on the remixed version and her piano skills are demonstrated along with her jazz interaction with other instrumentalists. It is a thing of beauty. The live version of "Brother , Where Are You"? by Oscar Brown Jr. has the passion of the Civil Rights movement, a slow swagerring, gritty song that builds momentum as the audience claps along joining the artist in unison in approval of his message. "Blues For Brother George Jackson"(check your history) fits the mold of what most non jazz people think of as jazz with it's multiple horns led by Archie Shepp with yet another Civil Rights era song. I would be remiss without mentioning the exceptional Latin influenced songs by Cal Tjader and Willie Bobo entitled "Soul Sauce" and "Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries" respectively. These two songs alone are worth the price of admission. It is worth comaparing the versions to the remixed versions to fully appreciate both the originals and the great job with the new interpretations. Recommended as is but even more so as a companion to the remixed versions. A super compilation for traditional jazz fans or those interested in the roots of "Verve Remixed /2."

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Value for Money!
Even if you only liked two or three of the tracks here, you'd still be getting a great deal for your money. That said, every track here is a winner and it's easy to see why these were picked for remixing on Volume 2. Virtually all of them feature wonderful percussion, which usually translates into arresting remix sounds (like the mighty Six Degrees Records roster!). If you don't own any Nina Simone, start right here with the mighty 10 minute "Sinnerman," used to dazzling effect in the "Thomas Crown Affair." Her "Black is..." shows us what a unique talent she was. As far as Volume 3 goes, it will interesting to see if Verve ever gives the OK for some remixes of Getz, Bird or the mighty Trane. Perhaps people are scared to touch those, but regardless of your position of remixing, Verve Unmixed 2 is the perfect present to get for someone, especially if you're CHEAP!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Verve Unmixed - the Sequel.
"Verve Unmixed 2" is the companion CD to "Verve Remixed 2," in which a handful of dance DJs successfully revamp several jazz classics. Here, each track appears in its pure original version, giving the listener a tour through some of the genre's most respected artists. The album kicks off with the infectious bite of Dizzy Gillespie's "Manteca," which sets the tone for the rest of the album. Ella Fitzgerald's "Slap That Bass" and Ramsey Lewis' "Do You Wanna" stand out pretty well, while Cal Tjader's stunning "Soul Sauce (Guachi Guaro)" is a timeless fusion of traditional jazz and Latin flavor. Another winner is the beautifully piano-laced "Black Is the Color of My True Love's Hair," which features Nina Simone's voice in all its aching glory. There isn't much more for me to say, as the music really speaks for itself. If you already have "Verve Remixed 2," it would be foolish to pass on this release which not only has the original versions but also one of the most impressive tracklistings I've seen on any compilation.

5-0 out of 5 stars More classics
This follow-up disc is every bit a great as the first. Do not let the low price scare you into thinking it's something less than high quality. A must have disc...fans and those unfamiliar with the Verve label will both enjoy that this music is BACK!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "THE ELVIS PRESLEY OF THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC!"
JUAN LUIS GUERRA of the hit Dominican band, GRUPO 440 (Cuatro Cuarenta)* is by far "EL REY" amongst his peers even though he still hasn't recorded for sometime. Yet, if I'm not mistaken he has turned to CHRISTIAN LATIN MUSIC and let me say that I had a chance this past 14th February 2004 to witness a truly magnificant performance, "CONCIERTO DEL AMOR" @ Madison Square Garden with Salsero GILBERTO SANTA ROSA. I have to be honest that I preferred the performance by JUAN LUIS GUERRA de GRUPO 440 over GILBERTO SANTA ROSA.

Luis Ricardo Irizuri e Jaunarena
"CLARO, LOCO!"

4-0 out of 5 stars La Banda 4.40-the best of the best
This cd is a wonderful compilation of the greatest hits of Juan Luis Guerra's music over the years. I couldn't of compiled it better myself. If you are familiar with and like Juan Luis' music and are looking to have some of his best on one cd this one would satisfy your requirements. I like most of the songs on the album although there are some that are not good as the others. The big hits on this album that seem to always hold strong are: La Bilirrubina, Burbujas de amor, Ojalá que llueva café, El costo de la vida & Bachata Rosa. However, popularity varies from region to region. But I must say this album has power because in every Latin country that I have visited in the past and present somehow from a store, a car or a house I would here this album playing and could imagine the joy that it brings to its listeners. Me subió la bilirrubina.. a mí.

4-0 out of 5 stars The only reason for not buying this CD
is having all previous CDs from JLG & 440. Being a huge fan of this music I have all albums released so far so I burned 2 CDs, one w/ merengue the other one w/ bachata + salsa.

5-0 out of 5 stars We gringas NEED this music!
Gringas, this music changed me. You will learn to feel the emotion behind complex Latin rhythms and it will not seem foreign to you. Juan Luis writes the perfect music to go with his sensual, creative, and loving poetry. He's also a hip and savvy political analyst! You will want to fall in love with him (but I don't recommend it, cuz youz gots no chance!). If you don't know Spanish, his music is reason enough to learn, but you will love it any which way! YOU NEED THIS MUSIC. Nuff said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking it to another level
I had already been very impressed by the original Latin sound of Guerra from his CD "Ni Es Lo Mismo Ni Es Igual." It is hard to describe but his music seemed to have a certain edge that I don't hear from most musicians. I am no listening to "Grand Exitos" for the FIRST time as I write this. That is how compelling and exciting his music is. I have listened to four songs and I am already convinced. This guy takes it to another level with his crisp arrangements, his joyous melodies...I hear a lot of African (Senegal/Congo) here with the fast guitar riffs. I guess that is only logical, given the obvious link between Africa and Latin America. I agree with everyone else here: this is one great CD. My son just walked in and recognized Track 4 "Visa para un sueno," saying, "we learned this in Spanish last year." Well, this makes a great addition any curriculum, Spanish, music, or learning about the world in general. Bravo, Juan Luis! ... Read more

A well chosen compilation of 12 songs, "Afro Latino" features artists from both sides of the Atlantic, including some based in the USA. The marriage of African and Cuban rhythm and tradition is incredibly fertile, witnessed by the many different takes on this most sensual and swinging mix from Cuba, Senegal, Angola, Cape Verde, The Congo, and even Peru. From the acoustic guitar-led Quarteto Oriente (playing in Cuba's "oriente" style) to Congo's soukous supergroup Les 4 Etoiles, the legendary Orchestra Baobab and Africando, this is a top flight introduction to the many flavors of Afro-Cuban music. Included from Putamayo's Artist label are the salsa tinged Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca and well established Congolese guitarist/songwriter Sam Mangwana, now residing in the USA. Afro-Cuban music has never been more vital, and this collection is a good place to start your explorations. --Derek Rath ... Read more

Listen folks...everytime I play this CD, in the car, in my backyard...people I don't even know approach me wondering "Where can I get that awesome music?" !! It's the true gem in my vast collection...so warm...so rich...and get this....IT WAS A GIFT from an ex-girlfriend....and I'm married. That tells you how great it is! I can never let it out of my sight, because when people first hear it, they want to slip it in their pocket! Go ahead and get it folks..

4-0 out of 5 stars Rico Mammbo!
This CD has a lot of various Afro-Cuban cuts. Some have a faster beat for dancing and others are more suave. Definitely music that will make you warm when you feel the beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I used to own 3 CD stores and ran a recording studio and a sound company. I've listened to just about everything. I guess I just got burned out on the same ole stuff - the same recycled riffs, recyled bands, etc. When I heard this disc, it blew me away. I've tried to track down the artists on the disc and buy their cds, too. But, most of these groups don't have any releases you can buy in the states - just a couple do. Not only are the artists great. Whoever put this compilation together deserves a lot of the credit. Probably the same person who compiled Samba Bosa Nova, another Putumayo masterpiece. It's a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for a great collection of music
If you have an ear for this genre of music, or if you are looking to get a taste, this is by far one of the most lively, fun and fantastic CDs you could get your hands on. The first song will capture your tapping feet and the guitar on Mujer Magica will mesmerize your senses. This is a must have CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Feel the Rhythms in Afro-Latino music
Welcome to the sensational music of Putamayo Artists. This album is a wonderful introduction to Afro-Cuban sounds. Combinations of 'Cubanesque' rhythms and African folk rhythms create a irresistable sound that, as the CD claims, is "Guaranteed to make you feel good!" I used to live in Miami and this music reminds me of the Cuban passion for good music. If you are not familiar with this sound, this album would make a wonderful initiation into the world of 'musica Latina'. This CD includes a booklet which explains how Cuban sounds are introduced into African culture. It also details each artist featured, which instruments played (some you've never heard), and the background of the story being told. Be prepared to get up and dance! ... Read more

Dominican singer, composer, and bandleader Juan Luis Guerra is one of the few true innovators in contemporary Latin music. He created a revolution when he reinvented traditional merengue with smart, poetic lyrics, jazz harmonies, and higher production values. In Bachata Rosa he similarly updated the lowly bachata, the rural, Dominican down-home version of the romantic ballad. Songs such as "Estrellitas y Duendes (Little Stars and Goblins)," "Como Abeja al Panal (Like a Bee to the Beehive)," "Burbujas de Amor (Love Bubbles)," and the title track revisit the old love themes with rare grace and subtle poetic flair. Meanwhile "Rosalia," "Cartas de Amor," and "A Pedir Su Mano" (in which Guerra hints at the connections between Dominican and African music which he pursued in subsequent albums) provide superb dance floor tracks. The result was a commercial and artistic success and with good reason. --Fernando Gonzalez ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius work of music: dance, sing and fall in love to it
It is not easy for an album to garner so many awards and recognition, but Juan Luis Guerra's 'Bachata Rosa' changed Latin music so much that it deserves every single one of them.

If you only considered that the album is 100% danceable with its catchy tunes ("Rosalia," "Carta De Amor," "A Pedir Su Mano," "La Bilirrubina"), its clever lyrics that still make songs easy to sing along and be merry or fall in love to (such as the case with "Como Abeja Al Panal", "Estrelliatas Y Duendes", "Burbujas De Amor" and the title track), you could say that the album is brilliant already.

But if you go beyond that, and realize that the album brought about a transformation to Merengue and Latin music at large, by bringing Bachata (a sort of tropical ballad) to the forefront of collective awareness, you start to realize that the giant from Dominican Republic (Juan Luis Guerra, in case you're wondering) is no average musician, but close to a musical genius. 'Bachata Rosa' stops being your album of typical Merengue music, and takes on a level of brilliance that is not common.

Do yourself a favor, and begin your Juan Luis Guerra collection here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Like another glowing album of Guerra's - "Arieto" - "Batacha Rosa" is a slice of pure genius from the Dominican Republic's Simon-Garfunkle-Lennon-McCartney singer-songwriter extraordinaire. A brilliant stylist, composer and vocalist, Guerra delivers some of his most passionate tracks and warmest moments on record, including the incandescent "Burbujas De Amor" - a story about fish in love that transcends its humor to become a soaring love song, and "Como Abeja Al Panal" - a song about unrequited passions with an unforgettable hook. At once thought-provoking and melodious, "Batacha Rosa" is yet another chapter in this brilliant stylists' repertoire, and perhaps overall, his very best album. As with other Guerra 440 albums, this is a must have collection of songs that will touch your heart, warm your soul, and deliver countless pleasures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catchy tunes, witty lyrics, great arrangements ¿ a must-have
Juan Luis Guerra and his group 440 were one of the biggest acts in Latin music throughout the nineties. Listen to this album and you'll understand why. It's little short of perfect. Juan Luis is a native of the Dominican Republic but honed his musical skills at Berklee and Columbia. He achieves a great mix of local energy and authenticity with polished accessibility.

The lyrics are infinitely imaginative. Okay they're in Spanish, but they handsomely reward a little dictionary work and they're a great way to learn the language. The catchy Bilirrubina hilariously hijacks a bunch of medical terminology to describe feverish feelings of unrequited love, while Burbujas de Amor (Bubbles of Love) sketches some outrageous but touching imagery - "I wish I were a fish . so I could blow bubbles of love wherever you want."

The tunes on Bachata Rosa are all excellent, from a variety of upbeat danceables to some sweet, poetic ballads. The arrangements are no less inventive than the lyrics - all that study certainly paid off.

If you like contemporary Latin music, then you're virtually guaranteed to like this one. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good album, but sounds a little off
I'd give it 4 stars but the introduction tracks are annoying and the "live" sound sounds fake to me. The crowd feels artificial, the recordings sound almost studio like, and the segways don't sound right.
If you can get past that, the music is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic album

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant followup to El Canzon de Moises
Though it lacks the all-star line-up of his pretty spectacular first outing, El Danzon De Moises, NY Downtown percussionist Rodriguez seems more easily at home on this disc with this hybrid music--Jewish/Cuban. Sticking with a single group of musicians throughout (leader Rodriguiz, percussion; Matt Darriau, clarinet, Bulgarian kaval, tin whistles, and Chinese trumpet; Curtis Hasselbring, trombone; Ted Reichman, accordion, Hammond B3, and Leslie organs; Meg Okura, violin; Sam Bardfeld, violin; Mary Wooten, cello; Brad Jones, bajo sexto, and Roberto Luis Rodriguez, trumpet, valve trombone, and bombard), he achieves a more consistently rendered soundscape, one combining the best of both worlds: the joyous, jazzy dance vibe of Afro-Cuban and the mournful melancholy of Jewish sensibilities.

Which proves to be a very potent brew--kinda the best of both worlds, each remaining true to its cultural insights but resonating marvelously with its opposite. Thus, you get a huge range of feeling not only throughout the entire disc, but usually on each number. The typical result is a mysterious sensibility partaking of each element but magically transcending both.

Certainly worth checking out by anyone at all interested in either of these marvelous world musics. ... Read more

First of all, don't pay any attention to the editorial that references the BVSC as being somehow even remotely related to this release. This is straight-up NYC Cuban Son.Not Salsa.Roberto Torres, founder of SAR Records explains a bit of what Jerry Masucci's role played in the term of "salsa" coming to be used by the masses to define virtually everything remotely Latin. There really is no "salsa."It's a b.s. term of merchandising. But, for this release...

Hermanos, you cannot get any finer outside of Fania. These are what the cats who wanted to venture outside of the Fania and Allegre record labels were laying down.If you wanted to get beyond the amazing double trombones of Colon and lofty coro of Lavoe/Betancourt/Cheo/etc, you found this. With soneros like Roberto Torres (who is a great friend/neighbor of mine in fact), trumpet legends like Chocolate Armenteros and the legendary Henry Fiol (if anyone remembers Saoco), you cannot go wrong here. That's just to name a few.

Get this, get this, get this.I cannot state that enough.Salud to, of all labels, Astralwerks for putting this out.

5-0 out of 5 stars CALIENTE!
I'm not sure if my pulse is up because of the terrific songs and style or the gorgeous photos of Chayanne in the CD package. I don't speak Spanish but I don't think it is necessary. He has a very soothing voice, not terribly strong but he definitely handles ballads, salsa and uptempo numbers with ease. I don't know why he has not crossed over with more popularity, like Ricky Martin or Marc Anthony because he deserves it. If you saw the movie DANCE WITH ME-you know he is multi-talented beyond his striking looks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made me a fan
I had not heard of Chayanne before this cd. I bought it on a whim not knowing what he sounded like. This cd is amazing! It is a nice collection of hits that showcase Chayanne's impressive talent. I have since purchased several of his other cds and can recommend them all. This cd is missing some of his really catchy tunes (Guajira and Boom Boom for instance), but it is a great intro for a new fan

This album is just great! The three new songs on the album, Si Tu Te Vas, Torero and Quisiera Ser are incredible. Chayanne has proven to be one of the best spanish singers and he just keeps getting better. The other tracks are just a few of his geatest hits. I've been listening to him since the beginning and I never get tired of hearing him sing his past hits. He's an incredible, amazing singer!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD, definitely a must buy for the collection
I was fortunate to look at Chayanne perform live a couple of months ago, and he is a marvelous artist, can dance so well, (beats Ricky Martin) and has a very nice voice. This CD has most of his best songs, and I especially adore the first new single he has Y TU TE VAS. This song alone makes it worthwhile to purchase the CD. If you have never heard Chayanne, this CD takes care of that for all the missing years. Enjoy.
