1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
My friend game me this CD to definatly tick me off. It was something new so I gave it a try. It's man hating lyrics just left me especulating over how anyone can listen to this crap. To make it short, I threw this CD out the window.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strong album, though second half is less good
***1/2 stars

Una Nueva Mujer is a big improvement for Olga over her last album Sobrevivir. She has returned more to the snappy merengues that made her famous (in the first half), the arrangements are good, often quite innovative and complex, and her singing is as fine as ever. My favorite song is the title Una Nueva Mujer, andthese upbeat songs are catchy andhave more depth than Yo Por Ti.

Unfortunately, I find the second half of the album less strong. Abrie Tu Corazon is a kind of folk/rock thing, which I don't care for. This is followed by two heavily pop flavored merengues, and two ballads, which are just not particularly distinctive. Finally a merengue Bandolero which is good, and then a cumbia version which is not that great. I don't like finishing off albums with "versions" - it comes across as filler. Another strong song at the end would have helped.

It'sworth pointing out that beginning with 2001's Yo Por Ti, Olga has considerably contemporized her style. For some this is a good thing, but I have to confess I am a bit old fashioned, and I still think Olga'sbest work was in the 90s. Then therewas a more authentic merengue vibe, and Olga had a deep and expressive delivery to match it.

Una Nueva Mujer is definitely worth having, but for me, Olga's triple threat remains Mujer de Fuego, Siente El Amor, and Llevame Contigo.

It might be interesting to put forth my overall view of the albums of this beautiful and very talented singer. I should mention that I tend to favor real merengue/salsa rather than pop or ballads (unless they are exceptionally good), so whenever Olga goes too far off the traditional track I tend to be unhappy. This certainly will not be an issue for all listeners however.

Sola - (1992) - ** This first album of Olga is basically a warm-up.

Mujer de Fuego (1992) ***Good solid album includes several of Olga's early hits like Presencie tu Amor and Vendras Llorando.

Siente El Amor (1994) **** This is a barnburner, and contains several of Olga's most loved songs:Una Noche Mas, Entre La Noche y La Dia, Ya Me Canse, Receta del Amor and more. There is also Olga's only known salsa, written by her - Unicornio.

Nuevos Senderos (1996) **1/2This low key Mexican flavor album may appeal to some but I find it rather bland. Me Subes Me Bajas Me Subes is a very nice song.

Llevame Contigo (1997) ***** Olga's best album, and one of the most memorable merengue albums of the 90s. Unique and irresistible.

Te Acordaras de Mi (1998) **1/2I find this Spanish flavored pop album a little overwrought and contrived. Three Kike Santander songs are the highlights: Tu Amor, Hielo y Fuego and the wonderful Un Hombre y unaMujer.

Yo Por Ti (2001) ***1/2 A new sound, and probably her mostbroadly appealing album. It's undeniably enjoyable, if a bit inconsistent in weight.

Sobrevivir (2002) ** My least favorite Olga Tanon CD.One good song, (Por Tu Amor), and the rest is rather forgettable, unless soft pop and unassuming ballads are your interest.

Una Nueva Mujer (2005) ***1/2 - See above.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Gem of an Album...
It had been 2 years since we have heard anything from Olga.Butthe wait was well worth it.I must say that this album is one of her best.It is better than "Yo Por Ti" and even better than "Sobrevivir".I think it is due to the fact that she put much more of herself into this album. She either wrote or co-wrote about 5 songs on the album and they happen to be the best ones. After listening to the album you can definitely tell she put in a lot of time and effort into the lyrical and musical aspects of the album. Her voice sounds better than ever.Of the 11 cuts on the album only 2 of them are ballads so you can be assured it is an upbeat album. It has merengue, cumbia, ballads, and tropical/pop mix.Just wonderful..... Here is a breakdown of the songs:

"Bandolero" (Pop Version): 5/5 I just love how the songs incorporates that violin sounds at the beginning and then turns into this really upbeat sounds. Love it!

"Una Nueva Mujer" 4/5She goes back to her merengue roots on this track. In the middle of the song she says, "Y si te acuerdas..." and she does her little signature voice sound. It's a midtempo merengue song.

"Muero de Amor" 4/5 The lyrical content of the songs are beautiful and the midtempo merengue/tropical beat are just as beautiful as well.

"Vete, Vete" 5/5 One of the songs Olga wrote. Very interesing lyrics and it has a sort of upbeat "merengue/salsa" beat to it.Love this one...

"Desde que Llegaste A Mi" 5/5 I have to say this is my favorite song on the entire album. It has a definite merengue beat with some other tropical influences.I just love the melody of how she sings the song complements the beat.Amazing....

"Dime Si Tu Me Puedes Querer" 3/5A midtempo tropical song. She penned this one as well. It's okay.

"Abre Tu Corazon" 4/5 A pop song. It's something very different than what she has done before. At first it may seem odd but after a while the chorus gets very catchy.

"Damelo Todo"5/5I love this song, too.An upbeat merengue song with a pounding pop beat as well.Lyrics are great but overall it's got a great melody and beat.

"Cuidado Con El Deseo" 3/5 It's alright. Midtempo tropical song. Soungs a bit like something Thalia or Paulina would sing.

"Maldito Seductor" 3/5 I like Olga's voice in this song. It's a ballad and it could have been better if they had incorporated a better beat to it.The one it has is too slow and drags the song a bit.

"Sin Ti No Puedo Vivir"4/5This is the other ballad on the album. It's very moving to hear Olga's daughter sing with her mother. Very touching lyrics.

"Bandolero" (merengue version) 5/5Awesome!!! This is the song we've been waiting for since "Es Mentiroso". Very upbeat and danceable.I play this song over and over. One her best merengue songs.

"Bandolero" (cumbia version)3/5The could have left this one out.Just doesn't catch my attention as much as the other songs.

Overall, it's a great album and worth the buy.Olga is at her best!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Olga Tanon is back and better than ever
This is without a doubt one of the best latin albums out there.period. Olga Tanon has once again proved she has talent. All songs on this album are very well done. The best songs are Bandolero(all versions),Vete vete,Damelo Todo,Una nueva mujer,Cuidado con el Deseo and Desde de que Llegaste a mi. Olga is here to stay.

Singer/songwriter Juan Luis Guerra applies his tropical big band magic on Christian-themed tunes on this CD but the result is the same--infectious rhythms that induce dance fever. Guerra's strength has always been his seamless blend of the spicy salsa and carnivalesque merengue rhythms and layering the music with elaborate vocal and horn arrangements to produce irresistible melodies. Guerra penned all 12 songs here; thay all deal thematically with God and devotion. Highlights include "Eres," which blends blues sentiment and gospel fever. Crisp piano and powerful horns drive the title track and "Las Avispas," a tune about walking with renewed confidence. Acoustic guitars introduce "Tan Solo he Venido," a mellow song about willing to give it all up for the Lord. As a singer, Guerra in top shape, his vocals conveying the variety of emotions from pain and longing to hope and celebration. As a bandleader Guerra hasn't lost his edge. He is a musical genius who knows how to fuse complex arrangements with tuneful hooks. --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

Dominican singer, composer, and bandleader Juan Luis Guerra is one of the few true innovators in contemporary Latin music. He created a revolution when he reinvented traditional merengue with smart, poetic lyrics, jazz harmonies, and higher production values. In Bachata Rosa he similarly updated the lowly bachata, the rural, Dominican down-home version of the romantic ballad. Songs such as "Estrellitas y Duendes (Little Stars and Goblins)," "Como Abeja al Panal (Like a Bee to the Beehive)," "Burbujas de Amor (Love Bubbles)," and the title track revisit the old love themes with rare grace and subtle poetic flair. Meanwhile "Rosalia," "Cartas de Amor," and "A Pedir Su Mano" (in which Guerra hints at the connections between Dominican and African music which he pursued in subsequent albums) provide superb dance floor tracks. The result was a commercial and artistic success and with good reason. --Fernando Gonzalez ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius work of music: dance, sing and fall in love to it
It is not easy for an album to garner so many awards and recognition, but Juan Luis Guerra's 'Bachata Rosa' changed Latin music so much that it deserves every single one of them.

If you only considered that the album is 100% danceable with its catchy tunes ("Rosalia," "Carta De Amor," "A Pedir Su Mano," "La Bilirrubina"), its clever lyrics that still make songs easy to sing along and be merry or fall in love to (such as the case with "Como Abeja Al Panal", "Estrelliatas Y Duendes", "Burbujas De Amor" and the title track), you could say that the album is brilliant already.

But if you go beyond that, and realize that the album brought about a transformation to Merengue and Latin music at large, by bringing Bachata (a sort of tropical ballad) to the forefront of collective awareness, you start to realize that the giant from Dominican Republic (Juan Luis Guerra, in case you're wondering) is no average musician, but close to a musical genius. 'Bachata Rosa' stops being your album of typical Merengue music, and takes on a level of brilliance that is not common.

Do yourself a favor, and begin your Juan Luis Guerra collection here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Like another glowing album of Guerra's - "Arieto" - "Batacha Rosa" is a slice of pure genius from the Dominican Republic's Simon-Garfunkle-Lennon-McCartney singer-songwriter extraordinaire. A brilliant stylist, composer and vocalist, Guerra delivers some of his most passionate tracks and warmest moments on record, including the incandescent "Burbujas De Amor" - a story about fish in love that transcends its humor to become a soaring love song, and "Como Abeja Al Panal" - a song about unrequited passions with an unforgettable hook. At once thought-provoking and melodious, "Batacha Rosa" is yet another chapter in this brilliant stylists' repertoire, and perhaps overall, his very best album. As with other Guerra 440 albums, this is a must have collection of songs that will touch your heart, warm your soul, and deliver countless pleasures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catchy tunes, witty lyrics, great arrangements ¿ a must-have
Juan Luis Guerra and his group 440 were one of the biggest acts in Latin music throughout the nineties. Listen to this album and you'll understand why. It's little short of perfect. Juan Luis is a native of the Dominican Republic but honed his musical skills at Berklee and Columbia. He achieves a great mix of local energy and authenticity with polished accessibility.

The lyrics are infinitely imaginative. Okay they're in Spanish, but they handsomely reward a little dictionary work and they're a great way to learn the language. The catchy Bilirrubina hilariously hijacks a bunch of medical terminology to describe feverish feelings of unrequited love, while Burbujas de Amor (Bubbles of Love) sketches some outrageous but touching imagery - "I wish I were a fish . so I could blow bubbles of love wherever you want."

The tunes on Bachata Rosa are all excellent, from a variety of upbeat danceables to some sweet, poetic ballads. The arrangements are no less inventive than the lyrics - all that study certainly paid off.

If you like contemporary Latin music, then you're virtually guaranteed to like this one. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't hear it enough
I love this CD. It's all great dance music. Good lyrics & fun music

5-0 out of 5 stars the Best Latin Album EVER!!!!
This album is the greatest latin album that I have ever listened too. It has a bit of something for every latin lover out there. My personal favouites are "Burbujas de Amor" and "Rosalia". 5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant followup to El Canzon de Moises
Though it lacks the all-star line-up of his pretty spectacular first outing, El Danzon De Moises, NY Downtown percussionist Rodriguez seems more easily at home on this disc with this hybrid music--Jewish/Cuban. Sticking with a single group of musicians throughout (leader Rodriguiz, percussion; Matt Darriau, clarinet, Bulgarian kaval, tin whistles, and Chinese trumpet; Curtis Hasselbring, trombone; Ted Reichman, accordion, Hammond B3, and Leslie organs; Meg Okura, violin; Sam Bardfeld, violin; Mary Wooten, cello; Brad Jones, bajo sexto, and Roberto Luis Rodriguez, trumpet, valve trombone, and bombard), he achieves a more consistently rendered soundscape, one combining the best of both worlds: the joyous, jazzy dance vibe of Afro-Cuban and the mournful melancholy of Jewish sensibilities.

Which proves to be a very potent brew--kinda the best of both worlds, each remaining true to its cultural insights but resonating marvelously with its opposite. Thus, you get a huge range of feeling not only throughout the entire disc, but usually on each number. The typical result is a mysterious sensibility partaking of each element but magically transcending both.

Certainly worth checking out by anyone at all interested in either of these marvelous world musics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars at least 50 % super-fabulous
This is a mixed bag from Crespo's career, with one song, the '98 duet with Millie Quesada ("La Reina del Merengue") which was to win them a "Duo Tropical del Año" Billboard Award that is not included in his other CDs, the terrific "Linda Eh", which is from a hard to find CD simply called "Elvis Crespo", and an 18 minute VCD that includes a music video of "Bandida", a "galeria de fotos", "biografia", and "discografia", making this package a worthwhile buy if you're a dedicated Elvis fan.

"Suavemente" from Elvis' first 1998 CD of the same name has to be one of the most irresistible dance songs ever recorded, and here you get the original, as well as a re-mix (partially in English) which doesn't live up to the freshness and vigor of the original, but is still quite good. Other songs from the first CD are "Tu Sonrisa" and the marvelous "Luna Llena".
From his 1999 CD you get "Pintame" which I always found to be rather repetitive, but was a big hit for him, and "Por el Caminito" which I like a lot.
From his 2000 CD, "Wow Flash", you get the title track, and "La Noche" with its nice guitar intro.
From his disappointing 2002 CD, "Urbano", there is "La Cerveza", 2 versions of "Bandida" (one without the rap section), and an "Urbano" re-mix medley which has a lively blend of rhythms.

Most of this CD is worth polishing up your dancing shoes for, with at least 3 stellar numbers (tracks # 1, 3 and 9) and many others that are lots of fun and great to dance to.
The insert foldout only includes a song list and total playing time is 63'00.

Juan Luis Guerra takes another look at his long, successful career on Colección Romántica, a lavish, two-disc affair that finds the Dominican Republic native revisiting and remixing some of his most successful songs. The collection's 20 tracks could have arguably fit on only one CD, especially considering that Guerra has already released two greatest-hits albums in 1994 and 1996. Still, this is a compulsively listenable affair, marked by Guerra's trademark dabbling in jazz harmonies, African music, and pop flavors. The collection's first five tracks--"Tú," "Razones," "Ay Mujer," "Quisiera," and "Amor de Conuco"--have been transformed from their original salsa and merengue versions into polished ballads. The trick works, and it sets the exotic, candlelit mood that figures throughout the album. Other hits such as "Burbujas de Amor" and "Bachata Rosa" have never sounded better, thanks to studio remastering. Even if Guerra's previous hits albums are already in your library, Colección Romántica deserves a prime spot on the shelf. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent collection
If you've never heard of Juan Luis Guerra and his band 440, you need to have this here album right away. If you do know him, then you'll appreciate all the new arrangements his done to some of his best songs.

This is no ordinary "greatest hits" collection, but rather a re-imagining of his music. Guerra made new arrangements to most of the songs in this double CD, making them more romantic, deeper and lovelier.

Standouts of this collection: "Tu" and "¡Ay! Mujer"

5-0 out of 5 stars Muy romantico
Juan Luis Guerra has been around quite awhile, long enough to have a greatest hits package and this a collection of his best slow jams, romantic music for two. Although his cumbias were very notable high charged dance numbers he has always had a soothing voice , perfect for romantic songs. This collection is primarily songs taken from four albums, all excelent, "Areito", "Bachata Rosa", "Mientras Mas Lo Pienso", "Ni es lo mismo ni es lo igual." One cut comes from one of my personal favorites "Ojala que llueva cafe." Included as well is a choice live recording of "Estrellitas y duendes" from Spain, Juan Luis is at his best, seductively crooning "viviras en mis suenos como tinta indeleble..........no se olvida el idioma cuando dos hacen amor." The song is so good he does it twice, once live and once in studio for this CD. Twenty songs make up this double disc that features some of his best recordings on the romantico side. A thick package that opens four fold, with discs easily accessible in the middle and a nice booklet with complete lyrics and photographs round out a beautiful CD for those quite moments of reflexion of that special person.....as a reviewer said it is music for falling in love. Juan Luis is a superb talent as he also writes all the songs and music, plays guitar and sings. An excelent CD for old and new fans of this Dominican Republic export for romantic hearts worldwide.

5-0 out of 5 stars What more can one add?
The other reviews say it all. J-L Guerra is presently the greatest performer and composer of Spanish-language music. He is one of the great figures of world music and EVERYONE should be aware of what he does. This man has it all: voice, arrangements....but above all, it's his sense of melody. I don't understand Spanish but I can feel his emotions through his wonderful melodies. American listeners, get with it! It's time to start listening outside of the box. Juan-Luis Guerra. Caetano Veloso. Joyce. Kazem al-Saher. Najwa Karam. Ali Farka Toure. Djemilady Tounkare. D'Gary. There is a WHOLE WORLD out there and once you start listening to it, you'll wonder how you were ever content with listening to just English-language music. (Not to say that there are not some good things coming from that direction.) Come on. Check it ALL out. We are living in a GLOBAL ECONOMY!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't think about it just buy it!
This album is fantastic. Don't worry if you don't speak Spanish, Juan Luis Guerra's music transends language barriers. When I bought this album, I knew little about the artist other than the song I had heard on the radio "Como Abeja Al Panal". I am glad I took the chance on the album, as I quicky became a fan of all his material. He is a romantic and his music is at times upbeat, and always smooth.

5-0 out of 5 stars lloviendo mucho cade
primero antes que nada, esta coleccion de juan luis guerra es estupenda, llena de canciones extraordinarias y un sentimiento unico. juan luis guerra is much more than a songwriter; he is a poet that share his gift with us with his beautiful lyrics and melodies. this album as the previous ones are deserving more than 5 stars.....they are masterpieces! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars EXCELENTE COMPILADO DE BALADAS

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Piece for my collection!
This is a great collectors item of this muli-talented star. If you don't have any of her CD's, this is the one to get joined with "A PURO FUEGO".

3-0 out of 5 stars "Best of" ?
Not exactly- it is not the "Best of" album in the usual sense of the word, but a collection of her non-merengue music, primarily ballads.

Olga showed in Yo Por Ti's "Prohibido El Paso" that she is a magnificent ballad singer, but few of the ballads here are of that caliber. Several are from Sobrevivir, which is in my opinion, her weakest album.

There is included Por Tu Amor, the one very good song from Sobrevivir, plus two of the best from Te Acordaras de Mi: "Tu Amor", and "Hielo y Fuego" . (None of these are ballads). Too bad they didn't include Un Hombre y Una Mujer, a gem of a song from that same album, as well as theaformentioned Prohibido El Paso - her best ever ballad, and yet it's not included here.

I also like Me Subes, Me Bajas Me Subes, that is the best song on Nuevos Senderos (and there is a great video of this on her Exitos en Video DVD). So overall, there are some great songs on this CD, but too many that are not that interesting.

This album, along with the more merengue oriented A Puero Fuego do give a fair overview of Olga's decade long work, and have some of her very best songs, but like most "Best of" albums, the overall program choices leave something to be desired. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Queen of Merengue.
It's undeniable that she's the queen of merengue. After 9 hit albums, Grammy awards, Billboard awards, #1 hits and Gold, Platinum and Multi-Platinum albums she gets back on the charts.
"Sobrevivir" is an excellent album with lots of rythm, mixing all the way through the album dance songs and ballads.
The first single, "asi es la vida" toped the US charts and in several territories.
Olga's voice is unique she has an incredible strengh when she sings and she really can make you dance.

This album has been certified Gold only 3 weeks after its release.
Olga goes goes through merengue, flamenco and ballads in this album, she also made a duet (on this album) with hit latin singer Luis Fonsi.
I only have 2 albums from her ("Yo por ti" and "Sobrevivir") they're both great and made me love her and think of her as the best merengue singer.

Olga Tañon delivers her 10th album. This album follows

but does hold to the Latin rythms. She goes through flamenco,
ballads, tango and dance. Olga's strong voice holds the
songs in place. The ballads are the album are mostly very
meaningful. She is still not one to disappoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great cd!!!
This album is difrent, fresh with new sounds, mixing flamenco and ballads and merengue I think that is a great album since the 1998's Te Acordaras de Mi. I have all of Olgas Albums and i just love the surprising mixtures she does with each album, is good to have varieties but she is still the number 1 Puerto Rican merenguera these days, I love her....i can't wait for the next one...Olga is defenitly a Diva....pa' lante!! viva Olga...

Beginning in 1989 with his breakthrough album Ojala Que Llueva Café, Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra shook the Latin pop world by writing music that was successful both artistically and commercially. Without losing sight of the dancers on the dance floor or of hook-driven radio, Guerra reworked Dominican merengue, and later the romantic, bolero-like bachata, with sophisticated jazz harmonies, poetic lyrics, and top-shelf pop-style production. He even made some astute connections between modern Caribbean and West African pop. But in 1994 he disappeared from view. Ni Es lo Mismo ni Es Igual shows an artist finding his way back, looking for the markers he left behind but not wanting to simply re-create the past. He has a couple of potential hits in "Mi PC," a catchy merengue in which Guerra romances using the imagery and language of our computer world, and "El Primo," a witty, crisp merengue about a cousin who "knows Michael Jordan and is an actor / Breathes underwater and is a painter / Is a sociologist and pilot planes...." The highlight of the disc is "El Niagara en Bicicleta," a merengue-rap that deals with the tragicomic miseries of health care in the contemporary Dominican Republic and shows Guerra at his very best: a devastating social critic with a fine-tuned pop sensibility. No Es lo Mismo is solid rather than impressive. But still, solid, for Guerra, is already better than most anything else on the Latin music charts. --Fernando Gonzalez ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not one of Guerra's best work, it is still a masterpiece
It is true that in the JLG's discography there have been better works, but still this record is a masterpiece. The lyrics are superb, with lots of beutiful poetry and metaphores that really get to one's heart. Music is also great, specially the agressive merengue songs like "El Niagara en Bicicleta", "Mi PC", " Vale la Pena ", "El primo" that mix along with the beautiful Bachatas, which the best are "Palomita Blanca" and "La hormiguita". From a great artist, a great album, definitely.

5-0 out of 5 stars He just CAN'T do a bad album - No sabe grabar un mal album
After quite a while of being away from the recording studio, Juan Luis, the best Merengue composer of the world, came back to deliver, once again, an outstanding piece of poetry combined with moving dance music.

He just doesn't seem to be able to put out a record with material that's not going to make it. This one is no exception. You'll love it, just as much as any other Juan Luis Guerra algum you might already have. If you don't have any other albums by him, it can be an excellent album to start collecting his music.

----

5-0 out of 5 stars Juan Luis Guerra is a wonderful performer!
I waited weeks for this album to come in from the library and it was well worth the wait. Juan Luis Guerra is truly in a class by himself. He has a clean and beautiful song. It is a grear combination of clean percussion and instrumental and a beautiful, romantic voice. Mr. Guerra also has a great sense of humor and a beautiful poetic style as a songwriter.

I love "Mi PC" (a song that juxtaposes computer lingo with a man's love for his lover), "Hormiguita" (a beautiful ballad), "Niagara en Bicicleta" (a merengue rap that takes a humourous and tongue-in-cheek look at the health care system of the Dominican Republic), the romantic "Testimonio", "Sobremesa", "Amor de Conuco" and the lively and humour "Primo."

If you are tired of all of the techno-based merengue and want to hear lyrics from a sincere and beautiful poet and melodies that compliment them oh so well this is definitely an album for you! What a great introduction to the music of the Dominican Republic. (This is only the tip of the iceberg, of course!)

5-0 out of 5 stars The best!
I totally love this guy's music. He can sing the national anthem and I will buy the cd. He is a poet. He says everything with very simple words but he gets to you, deep. "Amor de Conuco" is sooo beautiful and simple. Niagara en bicicleta is a great one to dance to.
I think his music delivers goodness. He must be an awesome human being!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Startling Song Cycle from the Poet-Singer
The man can sing anything from power ballads to sizzling salsa, and this album once again proves why Juan Luis Guerra ranks as the best Latin artist of our time. Grammy winner and beloved far beyond his Dominican fan base, Juan Luis Guerra evokes a passion that is largely missing from most of today's Latino artists. "Ni Es Lo Mismo Ni Es Igual" is an album I simply can't get enough of. Every time I listen to it, I hear something new, clever and fresh. Lyrically, he's at the top of his form, even a dozen years after bursting onto the music scene. Songs like "Palomita Blanca," "El Niagra en Bicicleta" and "Mi PC" show the artist's range as stylist and craftsman. The lyrics can make you laugh, cry and everything in between. Not unlike his other top albums - "Arieto" and "Bachata Rosa" - this best seller solidifies Guerra's rank as as the best Latin singer-songwriter in the world. Every track here is a winner, offering the listener ample reason to return again and again to his heartwarming world of love, passion and other-worldly emotion. Besides, who else can make you laugh out loud while telling a story about being treated at a pooor, run down hospital where surgery tools are used for dual purposes and even the IV's are used to sweeten the coffee? Another majestic achievement, from the poet Guerra! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Romantic y con ritmo!
Gisselle is back with a full merengue album. The merengue is kind of different from Voy a Enamorarte and her older stuff, but still has great rhythms and Gisselle's beautiful voice dances all over them. Overall the album is very romantic. Here are my favorite songs:
3. Dolor De Amor--lyrics are kind of like Selena's Bidi Bidi Bom Bom. It has a guy rapping in a verse too.
4. Porque Te Quiero--starts as a ballad and then becomes merengue. really happy, upbeat and romantic: "sin ti, son cumpleaños sin apagar las velitas. dime que si, dime que yo soy tu favorita...voy a enredar mi cariño en las notas de esta cancion"
5. Donde Estabas--very romantic with a good beat. gisselle's voice sounds so beautiful in this one: "Donde estabas, que rincon de este planeta...para amarte, no me alcanzara la vida"
It's great, if you like merengue, if you like to dance, if you like upbeat romantic music buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is a H.I.T !!!!
I'M A GISSELLE FAN FOR A LONG TIME NOW AND WITH HER NEW CD "CONTRA LA MAREA" SHE HAS PROUVED THAT SHE CAN HAVE SUCCESS WITHOUT TURNING INTO THAT BALLAD/POP STUFF.IN THIS ALBUM I SAW THAT GISSELLE HAS IMPROUVED IN EVERY LEVELS WICH IS GREAT =)ALL THE SONGS ARE GOOD AS HELL,CATCHY BEATS,CHARMING VOICE,AND A SEXXY LOOK THAT KEEP ALL EYES ON HER,WITH THIS NEW ALBUM GISSELLE DOESN'T HAVE NO CHOICE THAN BEING #1 (...)

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Gisselle is BACK!
After her last disappointing pop-ridden release "En Cuerpo, Alma y Corazon" (2002), Gisselle seems to have listened to her fans by releasing this fantastic brand new collection of merengue. At first glance, this CD looks like it's gonna be another "8" (2001) which was mediocre to say most, but don't be afraid to buy this one -- the original Gisselle is back!

The title track "Contra La Marea" is an exciting start to the 11-track CD (which includes 8 cuts in merengue, 2 ballad versions of 2 of these, and 1 pop version of another.) "Contra La Marea" is an upbeat merengue track that give us a taste of what we're in for with the rest of this disc. "No Queda Nada" fakes out as a ballad but quickly transforms into merengue, and possibly one of the best tracks on the CD. "Dolor de Amor (Catapum)" can be seen as rather annoying and serves as the obligatory pop track of the CD, but the rest of the album is so refreshingly filled with the original Gisselle that this song is forgiveable and in time, possibly even enjoyable. (The merengue version of the track is worth a listen as well.) Other notable tracks include "Porque Te Quiero" (another ballad fake-out, turns into a catchy merengue tune!), "Confieso", "Atrevete" (possibly my favorite cut after the title track), and "Tienes Gusto De Otra Piel."

Ladies and gentleman, Gisselle has returned with a virtually flawless album that will remind you why you fell in love with her in the first place. "Voy A Enamorarte" has been my favorite Gisselle CD (although the disc is divided half and half between merengue and ballads), but "Contra La Marea" may have just taken its place.. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars La Reina de Merengue--Successful Yet Again
Although Yo Por Ti may not be the most exciting of Olga's albums, it is certainly a beautiful mix of merengue and tropical beats that will get anyone dancing. It also may not be her most successful CD to date, but her strong and seductive voice comes through wonderfully, and she paints a beautiful romance story throughout the album. I think Olga fans throughout are pleased with this album, and I recommend any fan of Latin music to listen to this. Overlook its flaws and start dancing, becuase this Cd is still the high-qulaity Olga Tanon we all love. Viva Olga!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful.
Olga Tañon besides being the Queen of Merengue is known as "La mujer de fuego" (fire woman) because of her voice and strengh in her music and lyrics.
In 2001 she released this production which was a big hit in the U.S, Latin America and Spain. The first single "Como olvidar" (how can I forget) was a #1 hit and was released in merengue and ballad. That single was follwed by "Mienteme" (Lie to me), another big hit.
This album is basically a Merengue one, the only pop song is the ballad "Como olvidar". There are great songs to dance like "Tu te lo pierdes" (you miss it) that has 100% of rhythm, "Me gusta" (I like it) another great track, "I wanna have fun" which is in Spanish. There's one song that is softer but doesn't lose its Merengue style, the song is the one that gives little to the cd, "Yo por ti" (Me for you).
This cd won the 2002 Grammy for best Latin album and debuted at #4 in the American charts.
I would also recommend her 2002 cd "Sobrevivir" (Survive) which is amazing but doesn't have the rhythm that this one has. It has more ballads and also includes a duet with hit Latin singer Luis Fonsi and includes also the 2003 #1 hit "Asi es la vida" (That's the way life is) which is a Merengue song.

5-0 out of 5 stars This girl definitey has talent...
Olga has a beautiful voice and personality to match. I've seen her on various tv shows and I like her very much. I recommend her music to everyone. Believe me, you won't regret it!

1-0 out of 5 stars only one star b/c I could not give a zero
this album is pathetic

she's obviously bored with what she's doing. I can't believe they gave her a latin grammy for her bad efforts. There are many other merengue albums out there that should've received this award.

don't buy this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll end up loving it
Olga's latest CD has a lot of variety and sounds terrific. I had to listen to it a few times to decide if I really liked it or not, and discovered I enjoyed it more than I thought I did.

The majority of the songs are fast-paced, especially the song that seems to be getting the most attention: "Tu Te Lo Pierdes." My favorite is the merengue title track. Yes, there's finally some new merengue material on this CD, but not on all the songs. Her English contribution, "I Wanna Have Fun," is really a bilingual song, and unfortunately it's also probably the weakest number on the CD.

This CD is very tropical, but also very pop. It opens with a slow song, ends with a slow song, and has a lot of fast- to mid-tempo songs in-between. Yo Por Ti is a hot blend of tropical styles and Olga's unforgettable voice.

If you like this one, I think you would also like Gloria Estefan's Alma Caribena CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A new path for Olga
Nuevos Senderos was Olga's first non-Merengue CD. The songs are a lot slower than what she usually does and they seem to fall under the Grupero category on this CD. "Me Subes, Me Bajas, Me Subes" is probably the most popular and upbeat track. Most of the songs were written by Marco Antonio Solis. Olga's voice is very clear and gorgeous. Even though it's not her best release, it's still quite good.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Newer Fans
Olga Tanon's "Nuevos Senderos" is a great CD for old Olga fans, seeing the way they react to it. But I am a newer Olga fan, and "Nuevos" really didn't get me that excited. I have four Olga CDs, most of them upbeat, and this CD kinda turned me off. The only songs that I almost always repeat are "Cuestion de Suerte", "En Ti", and sometimes "Basta Ya!". I like the live version of "Me Subes, Me Bajas, Me Subes" much better than this version, it seems slower. All in all, a good CD, but better get more experienced with Olga Tanon before delving into her more experimental works. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars From Meringue to Magnificent !!!
Nuevos Senderos was Olga Tanon's breather from her regular "Queen of the Meringue" status. The songs were artistically written and well produced by Marco Antonio Solis from Los Bukis fame. For fans who are expecting a fast-paced meringue workout, this album is not it. Instead, you get well-crafted and very beautiful, romantic boleros, ballads, and maybe a few cumbias. From start to finish of entire c.d., vocals and instrumentation are magnificent ! You can feel the passion and emotion that Olga put into this project along with Solis; She can really belt out with her voice on these ballads ! This c.d. is highly recommended. Do not dismiss it simply because you might think it's too slow- paced--there are plenty of surprises that may change the way you think about Latin boleros, cumbias and ballads with this one!!!... ... Album Description

The legendary master of the wheels of steel, former member of Terranova, and initiator of the infamous Ghost Cauldron project now returns as Kaos with his most mature solo effort to date.

Musically, Hello Stranger has a very versatile sound, blending Electronica, Disco, Funk and Rock all into one continuous flow. Kaos stated that, "…the album is a ‘good time album’, one that you can have fun with both at home on the couch, as well as in the club on the dancefloor".

Kaos acquired an assortment of musicians and singers to collaborate on the Hello Stranger project. Names like Erlend Øye, Daniel Wang, Khan and Snax all appear on the album.Captain Comatose, Matt B. Safer (The Rapture), the performance artist Namosh, Nicole (Electrocute), Boy from Brazil, Eddy Cooper and Jason Friedman (from New York punk rockers The Boggs) are also featured on the album.

Hello Stranger elegantly reflects the sound that Kaos has been cultivating for years as a DJ. It is a sound that equally features the sound of yesterday and today, where the past, present and future rule. Based on the solid conviction that music is a medium that can independently transcend all chronological and genre related definitions, what counts is simply the good vibe, the good groove and the uniqueness of sound. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the best, is just that! The Best!
This is by far the best CD's i've bought in a while. You can't help but dance every time you listen to oro solido's music. My favorite song is definitely "Esta Cache". I probably play that song about four times a day. Even if you are not spanish speaking, you can still appreciate the music. Go out and buy this CD. Oro solido is without a doubt "El Presidente del Merengue."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Compilation!!!!!
The title doesn't lie. What surprises me the most about this compilation is that all of the songs are the best ones from all of Raul Acosta's six albums. Starting with the worldwide hit, "La Tanga", it contains four songs from, arguably, his best album, "El Poder De NY". Believe me, this record cannot be dismissed. BUY IT NOW!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Freeing Sunny Mood Music
If you can sit still enough to type while listening to this fast-paced happy mood music, you are doing quite well. This music is made for sunny days dancing on a beach, playfully relaxing in the sun or dancing seductively late at night to the light of the moon.

This music has elements of fun, romance and freedom of spirit. Uba's rich voice captures your attention no matter if he is singing bachata, bolero, son or merengue.

Super Uba Y Su Conjunto is changing how the world views Dominican roots music. I was also interested in the various instruments they use to produce the unique sounds on this CD. One of the instruments is the Tambora Drum that is a two sided drum played with a stick on one side and the hand on the other. A Guira sounds like a metallic scraping instrument.

The guitarists on this album show a deep understanding of this highly rhythmic music. Victor Sanchez is regarded as one of the top Latin bass players, Gabriel Rodriguez sometimes takes the lead on the rhythm guitar and Edilio Paredes is a master of the 12 string guitar. He is universally regarded as the greatest master of Dominican guitar.

"Magdalena" is my favorite song because of the intricate beauty and emotion of the music.

This music is perfect for when you need to get cooking in the kitchen. Music does take cooking to new levels, especially when it is this authentic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant CD
SUPER UBA's fabulous rhythms make everyone want to get up and dance! It's happy music that transports you to a warm climate.

5-0 out of 5 stars a Caribbean delight
Rich and soulful, this is a gem of a recording that enchanted me with its authenticity and freshness, and set my feet dancing with its fabulous rhythms.
Performed with mastery by Super Uba, with his easy-going slightly smoky voice...it is the voice of a man who has experienced a lot in life, and with him the extraordinary, virtuoso guitar artistry of Edilio Paredes, whose technique and improvisational skill are a joy to listen to. The entire conjunto, which on this CD includes Victor Sanchez on bass, Guillermo Cardenas on tambora and guira, and Isidro Martinez on guira, is tight and accomplished, the sound is good, and production by Benjamin de Menil and Enrique Lopez excellent; they have refrained from the over-amplification and enhancements so commonly used these days that would have robbed this music of its purity and authentic flavor.

Ubaldo Cabrera, better known as Super Uba, wrote three of the songs, all of them wonderful: "Te Hare Feliz" ("I'll Make You Happy"), "Tierra Lejana" ("Distant Land"), and one of my favorites, "Doña Inez", a terrific merengue about a woman who is not returning his affections.
Other choice picks are a classic, beautiful bolero from days gone by, "Mar y Cielo" ("Sea and Sky"), on the differences between a man and the wife he does not love, "La Yuca", which has a lot of saucy wit in its double-entendres, and "Magdalena", a marvelous bachata. All ten tracks are strong, with clever lyrics and lovely melodies, and total playing time is 46'01.

Though Super Uba has lived in New York since 1995, he has not let the tempo of La Gran Manzana disturb the simplicity and peace of his music, which speaks of his homeland, the Dominican Republic, with its atmosphere of palm trees and warm sand, soft breezes and a slower and sweeter pace of life.
This CD will delight many, because its appreciation will span a wide range of Latin music genres, from acoustic folk traditions to Afro-Caribbean; good for listening or dancing, you won't regret this purchase...it will bring some island sunshine into your life, and warm your heart with its humor, charm and superb musicianship.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have ASAP
I got a chance to Hear this Album&was Hooked from the Guitars,Drums&Vocals that are all on Point. the Music is Crisp&soulful without being Polished&over-Produced. very direct but a strong Blend of Many sounds&vibes all at once.this is Great Music from the Dominican Republic&truly full of Strong Arrangements&Makes you feel Good.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Fresh As Tropical Breezes!
There is a magic in the music from the Dominican Republic that is addictive - even one listening of this lushly creative CD entitled TERRA LEJANA gives notice of an addiction forming! My usual musical travels are along the paths of Classical music - both of the old and the living masters. But due to a much appreciated note from a friend about the gifts of Super Uba and the music of the Dominican Republic, I am in awe at not only the brilliance of the singing of Super Uba and the technical musicianship of the guitar playing of Edilio Paredes but also the lusty joyful comraderie of the ensemble assembled here. This music is uniquely special and stands with the best.

The Caribbean flavors are rich and intoxicating and this is music as fine as any being performed today. As for the gifted virtuosos in evidence here, I would venture to say that Super Uba is more than just a major talent - he is a man who communicates his roots with soulful ecstasy. This selection of songs is uplifting and joyful. No matter your previous musical experiences I would urge everyone to indulge in this musical banquet! ... Read more
