There’s no doubt that singer Lila Downs' profile is on the rise after her appearance in the film Frida and on the accompanying soundtrack, which led to a performance at the 2003 Academy Awards. The dividing lines between cultures and classes are major themes throughout the Mexican-American singer's decade-long career; but whereas 2001’s Border is more angry about the disparities, One Blood: Una Sangre is more inclusive, if only for the hopeful note of unity sounded in the English-language version of the title cut (the album has two distinctly different readings of the song sung, respectively, in English and Spanish). While much of the cumbia-based, genre-breaking material here is original, Downs and her band completely revamp two covers: Ritchie Valens classic "La Bamba" features techno beats and African drumming; the folk song "La Cucaracha" opens with wailing guitar before settling into a gentle reggae groove. Stylistically restless and lyrically didactic, One Blood: Una Sangre is as ambitious as it is beautiful. –-Tad Hendrickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprising
Listening to the first track the first time, you think this is going to be an average album, maybe a mistake to get it. But as the album progresses each song reveals flavours and styles that are surprising, interesting, varied and strong. Even two songs as overworked/corny as La Bamba and La Cucaracha come off new and fresh. This could album could appeal to people who like cumbia, flamenco, jazz, Cuban, or Latin influence music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting and Hip
This is a beautiful album! I had never heard of Lila Downs but was immediatly struck by her vocal prowress and the unique musical arrangement of the songs. I heard the album playing in a bookstore and ran over to the music department to purchase it right away. The lyrics have many layers of meaning that leave you with a rich satisfying experience. The music is soulful, haunting, and hip with a nod to tradition. I recommend this album to anyone who thinks and feels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Until there's a live album...
this will have to do!!! But, hey, this is one killer album and a must buy for any fan of Lila, World Music and Women's music.

Although I would have to say La Linea is probably still my personal fave--mostly because it was the current album when I first got into her music-- Una Sangre will likely go down as her best effort yet and will at the very least set the bar really high for the band for future albums.

This is, of course, due largely to the awesome ensemble sound of her new international band and the excellent input of her husband (and band's keyboardist and sax player), Paul Cohen. Arguably this group should have its own name, as this is less a solo album by a singer and noticeably more a "group effort".

This is not to say that Lila's signing is anything less than superb on this album! I think she demonstrates better technique and is in generally "better voice" (you singers know what I am talking about!) on this album than she is on her previous albums.

There are so many excellent tracks on this disc that I cannot do all of them justice in less than 1000 words, so I will mention just one in particular: Malinche. Check out the syncopated timing, the communication and tightness of the musicians, the unmistakable way the band gradually weaves its intricate sound, the way parts of the song melt and blend into each other.

This is called style, folks, and that's what this album has achieved: a signature sound that only this collection of musicians can accomplish. It's funky, it's hip, it's jazzy, it's intellectual, it's traditional, it's cutting edge, it has monster grooves, impressive instrumental sections and beautiful vocals.

Buy it today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great album, get this please
Using different languages and musical styles as vehicles, Lila Downs' new album, Una Sangre (One Blood), is an emotional journey into cultural diversity and understanding in an effort to show us all our similarities. While cultural exploration is undoubtedly the focus of Una Sangre, under the rich tapestry of music lie poetic social commentary and themes of empowerment. Subtle hip hop-like production and Downs' entrapping vocals handsomely conceal a tribute to a female lawyer murdered in 2002 for fighting for human rights on the Spanish sang "Dignificada."

Heavy handed notions do not prevent Downs from having fun on Una Sangre. Creative and intriguing renditions of "La Bamba" and "La Cucaracha" add reason for there to be dancing amid all the dialogue Downs encourages. While the unifying thoughts behind it are praiseworthy, the true attraction of Una Sangre is Downs' herself. Hovering somewhere between Celia Cruz and Dinah Washington, Downs' voice is gorgeous and amazing as she easily goes from the bluesy growl of songs like "Mother Jones" and "Paloma Negra," to the fluttering weightlessness of "Yanahuari Nin." Down's proves the lofty thesis of her album title, Una Sangre, by crafting cohesive beauty out of a plethora of style(she even rhymes), sounds and languages. Una Sangre is a wonderful offering.-Christopher Sanders

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great One!
Lila's CD "La Linea" has become one of the "can't-live-without-it-desert-island must-have" disc in my collection. With the arrival of "Una Sangre", I happily have another disc with the same status. The CD opens joyfully with "Viborita". She continues with her political and spiritual messages in the title track and with cuts like "Dignificada", the re-worked "La Cucaracha" and the magical "Flower of Marigold". The band, which I was lucky enough to see recently, is truly international and the music reflects this, from Mexico to Japan to the deep southern blues and gospel notes included the cut "Mother Jones". Great disc! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mariachi Los Camperos-Outstanding
Having the pleasure of hearing Mariachi Los Camperos at La Fonda in Los Angeles has to be one of the best experiences for a mariachi lover like me. Not being able to be there everyday, I have Viva El Mariachi to hear them at home. This CD should be a must have of every mariachi aficionado. I love all the songs and the way they perform. It is just too bad that there are no more of their cd's available. I fully recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets
Buying this disc, reading the accompanying booklet and listening to the music and you will become an instant source of knowledge. The outstanding booklet details the career of Nati Cano's Mariachi Los Camperos, from it's inception in Mexico, it's relocation to different cities in the republic and all the way to his eventual settlement in Los Angeles. Besides the music being top notch, by one of the preeminent mariachi groups in the world, the text is a wealth of information about the roots of mariachi(dispels the common belief that the word came about with the French occupation) and the mega growth to today's popularity worldwide that includes numerous festivals , groups and recordings. As part of the Smithsonian Folkways Recordings coming from the Center for Folkloric and Cultural Heritage the disc is a standout A+ winner. The booklet has 32 pages and besides the essays each and every song is explained with biographical information including a decription as to the style, i.e., whether it is a bolero, ranchera, huapango, jalisciense or son and even has technical information on meter timing of the melodies. The music itself is a superb collection of the various styles. The lively set contains some of the most popular mariachi songs recorded including ,"El Gustito(check out a Los Lobos version)," Gema"(made popular by Javier Solis), "La Malaguena"(recorded by everyone from Richie Valens to Paco de Lucia) " and "Paloma Negra"(resounding and resonating from Garibaldi Square and all points on the compass throughout every bar in Mexico). Another great thing about this CD is the variety of singers who interpret the various styles. This creates a disc that has many textures to match the various styles; on one track it may be a woman singing, on another a man in falsetto maybe interpreting a huapango, a deep baritone voice or a sensous treatment to a bolero or it may just be a blending of various vocalists.Nati Cano proves that he is as much a visionary of mariach music as some of his contemporary and more well known giants in the field like Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. This is an outstanding disc for the serious collector of mariachi recordings or for the newbie. Great music and an informative booklet make for a perfect package for the festive times of your life. This CD should not be missed by people who like mariachi music, buy it, you won't be dissapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This is one of my favorite CD's. the arrangements and voices are superb. This CD shows why Los Camperos is one of the premier mariachi's in the world. Listening to "el gusto" and its violin makes you feal like you are really listening to a conjunto huasteco and my personal favorite, "Virgencita de Talpa" is sung and played with such passion. If you ever have a chance to listen to los camperos live, I recomend that you do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bolio Interloper
This CD simply kicks fanny!!! I like this much better than my Mariachi Vargas CDs!!! Throughout the CD the muscianship is excellent, in particular with the violin playing. The voices are powerful and passionate without being strained, and convey emotion that transcends the language barrier (although I understand quite a bit of the lyrics). Whether you're a casual Mariachi listener or a collector and fan, this belongs in your collection! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
If you are only going to own one CD of Mariachi music, then do your pocketbook a favor & purchase this CD. Its the best CD put out by the 4th Generation line-up, as it contains the best versions of most of the music interpreted here (La Malaguena, Son de la Negra, etc.,). As a side note, Vargas has issued several CDs since this one that have not made it through the distribution channels in the U.S. or Mexico! One of these albums, Penas-Desenganos y Amores, has the version of "El Cascabel" from the PBS special "Mariachi Spirit of Mexico" It is a real shame/loss if the greatest Mariachi cannot get distributed. You can listen to clips from that CD on the Marichi Vargas website www.mariachivargas.com.mx - if you enjoy it then please join me in sending an e-mail to Amazon customer service to request the CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A rich Mariachi experience.
Beautiful vocals backed by rich instrumental accompaniment. An authentic Mariachi experience. If I were to have only one CD of Mariachi music, this would be it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally entertaining from the BEST!
In searching for some distinct marchiachi sounds, I decided to go to the source, a Mariachi band, and what better source than the band considered the best in the world, Mariachi Vargas, a tradition embarked 100 years ago. Instrumentally and vocally, the music is a wonderful ensemble of pure variations of traditional Mexican sounds.

The voices are solid, powerful and the selection is quite entertaining! This sounds crisp and clear with every note refined. You will hear various voices, solo and group which brings flavor to lyrics. I only wish a few songs were complete, such as "Las Feria de las Flores"; this one is so vivid, loud, fun, it deserves a complete track. Another one that's sampled is a very old polka style istrumental "Nochecitas Mexican" is so enjoyable hear and it is always danceable music.

If you desire a taste of Mexican classic mariachi music, what better way to acquire that than with the epitome of Mexican music, a mariachi band, the best! This is excellent!....MzRizz

5-0 out of 5 stars Unusually good Mariachi recording
In my opinion this is the best recording by the current (4th Generation) line-up of "El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo." My only criticism is that there's only one "puro" Mariachi (son Jaliciense) tune on the disc, "La Negra." However, it is the very best and most exciting recording of that traditional son I've ever heard, (even better than versions under the direction of Silvestre Vargas;) worth the price of the CD by itself. Overall, this is a really pleasant tour of traditional central Mexico by the most important Mariachi ensemble.

The CD is okay...but its not worth buying there are three much better albums that are worth your hard earned dollars:

Performer / Album / ASIN
Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan / Aniversario 100 / B00000160K
Mariachi Los Camperos / Viva el Mariachi / B00006BXKB

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound, wonderful traditional classics!
There's no Latin music that will ever compare to mariachi music with its blaring brass, violins and guitars. It remains a source of inspiration, a mood changing fundamental. Here, the music is exceptionally well! I enjoy the traditional classics "Guadalajara", "Tu Y Las Nubes", "El Mariachi", "Carabina" "La Verdolaga".

The cultural style of selections delves into a little bit of Mexico all over. For the money, these 16 tracks offered is well worth it, and better yet, the music SOUNDS GOOD! Conductor Lopez Varanga leads the musicians. No matter the different styles of music that I prefer, Mariachi music will always be number one; I will always come back to it! .....MzRizz

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST PEDRO INFANTE CD
If you are fond of listening to boleros and want to buy a cd this is the FIRST cd you should get. This cd is a classic. I bought this on the Peerless label a while back so it was kind of expensive because it was imported. but now WEA did some deal with Peerless(to my surprise because Peerless was reluctant to accede to any foreign company) and WEA re-released his cd's but at a cheaper price(great!). DO NOT BUY PEDRO INFANTE ON ORFEON. ONLY on Peerless WEA. Peerless did a good job in safeguarding Pedro Infante's classic music. I am not from that era( I was born in the seventies) but I must say his voice I have not seen a match yet. This cd is a must since it contains his most known songs like Amorcito Corazon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good collection of her spanish songs
I just got finish listen to this cd and I love it to death she is now one of my new favorite artist in spanish. I love her voice it is very strong and I can't wait to get more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect Compilation Of Her Songs In Spanish
I give this cd 4 9/10 stars because:

1) In the liner notes she incorrectly describes the song Piel Canela as one of the most beautiful songs from México. Although this song has been recorded by artists of many countries, the Original Hit Version was recorded by its composer the late Bobby Capó, a legendary singer/songwriter/entertainer from Puerto Rico.

2) The Spanish version of Blue Bayou( Lago Azul) should have included, she still sings it in her concerts. ... Read more

This stirring collection of mariachi classics will likely be appreciated by aficionados of the genre, but it's also a familiar treat for most anyone who has ever been to a Mexican-style wedding, birthday party or even a bustling restaurant. Llegaron Los Camperos! highlights a slew of instantly recognizable classics, all expertly performed by Nati Cano's Mariachi Los Camperos. It's a follow-up to 2002's acclaimed Viva el Mariachi. Cano's group is arguably the foremost interpreter of mariachi music in the U.S., and this ten-track collection showcases the booming voices, precise instrumentation and thrilling harmonies that are the ensemble's hallmarks. Cano and Los Camperos weave their way through a carefully assembled group of common-theme medleys, including "Jalisco," "Jose Alfredo Jimenez" and "Michoacan." Every moment on this disc sparkles with immediacy, and it's all anchored by a Los Camperos’ clear love of the genre. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

Jorge Negrete may have been Mexico's first cinematic ranchera hero, but perhaps because of his premature death in 1953, Pedro Infante surpassed him in the number of hit movies and recordings. And like that of Negrete, Infante's fantastic recording output has been constantly released in new compilations. This collection has most of his signature hits, including "Cien Años," a heartbreak tune about being abandoned, and "Paloma Querida," an old standard reinvented by Infante when he sings with cool detachment about love's inspiration. Infante was untrained, his approach was simple but emotive, yet he was talented enough to make unforgettable such other classics as Agustin Lara's "Mujer" and "Amor de Mis Amores," and the uplifting bolero "Amor a la Distancia." Infante died in a plane crash in 1957 but is immortalized in his movies and music. --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful singer, horrible recording
I love Pedro Infante. There is noone that can sing like him. That is why when I bought this CD I was truelly dissapointed because it was hard to hear his magnificiant voice. This recording appeared to sound like some took his original LP and put a sheet over the microphone, he sounded so muffled. I truelly love this artist, and becuase of that I realy hated how they rerecorded his songs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Songs by a Great Singer
What more can be said about such a great natural voice? The songs are great, but the recording quality is not so sharp on this CD. Needless to say, the songs were not recorded in the studios of today. The lyrics, and voice of Pedro Infante, are a joy to hear and one is tempted to sing along, or just sit and enjoy. (In case the reader is unfamiliar with Pedro Infante, the reader should know all songs are sung in Spanish)

5-0 out of 5 stars PEDRO INFANTE PURE FEELINGS, LOVE, HAPPINESS AND PEACE
I LOVE THE CD CALLED LAS ROMANTICAS DE PEDRO INFANTE, I HAVE NOT FOUND ANOTHER MUSIC FROM ANOTHER ACTOR THAT GIVES ME SO MUCH PLEASURE FEELINGS AND ALL DIFFEREND KINDS OF FEELINGS.THERE ARE NOT WORDS TO EXPLAIN HOW GREAT PEDRO INFANTE WAS AS A MUSICIAN AND AS AN ACTOR. HE IS A LEGENDARY AND HIS MUSIC WOULD BE ALIVE FOREVER AFTER. EVERYTIME I LISTEN TO A NEW SONG FROM PEDRO INFANTE, I EXPERIENCE A NEW FEELING OF PLEASURE AND EXCITEMENT INCOMPARABLE TO NO ONE. I LOOK FORWARD FOR SONGS THAT I HAVE NOT HEARD YET, FOR MY COLLECTION OF PEDRO INFANTE'S MUSIC. THAT IS MY PERSONAL OPINION, WHAT IS YOURS?

4-0 out of 5 stars Pain and elation, all at once
Pedro Infante was one of those rare artists, who can command respect and pity at the same time. his music, his songs are achingly beautiful, and yet to know he died so young is a heartbreaker. Ramiro bur is right on the money in his bio essay in the "Billboard Guide to Tejano and regional Mexican Music," on Billboard Books: "In the history of Mexican pop culture, there has never been an artist who captured the hearts and minds of Mexicans like the ranchera singer/film actor Pedro Infante." 5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Mariachi
Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan are known as the best mariachi in the world, and it is definitely for a reason. The musicianship is tight, with all of the guitars, trumpets, and strings executed perfectly and beautifully. The beauty, quality, and precision of this recording is so well-executed that one could very well mistake the songs for being performed by an entire orquestra (as opposed to what is really an ancient folk ensemble)! That being said, one must understand a little bit about the pasodoble before really understanding the album. Pasodobles are Spanish marches that traveled to Latin America during the existence of the vast Spanish empire. It thrived in many different Spanish colonies, particularly those in which the old Spanish tradition of bullfighting was popular; however, both bullfighting and the pasodoble became extremely prolific in Mexico. Today, the pasodoble exists as both the traditional music for bullfights as well as a type of song used for ballroom dancing. The songform itself is very interesting; it seems to be a fusion of North African/Moorish melodies with western rhythms and instrumentation. It is particularly beautiful when played by a mariachi ensemble, of which it seems almost made for. In fact, most mariachi groups include at least a few pasodobles in their sets. The song "Lorenzo Garza" makes a perfect introduction to the album, functioning as a strong beckon to the listener. "Por Tapatias" boasts an impressive opening trumpet, and the famous "Juan Silveti" is perhaps the most exciting song on the album, with it's slightly brooding mood. Also, "La Machicha" is a nice addition as well, as it is perhaps one of the "cutest" pasodobles ever composed. Of course, this is all made possible by the capable hands of the world-renown Mariachi Vargas. For a good taste of old Mexico, this is an excellent album of beautiful and exciting music, and a wonderful addition to the many excellent recordings of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. Classic mariachi in its entirety! ... Read more

From the accordion polkas of the Texas border to the dazzling harp of the Veracruz region, there's a huge range of folk music styles in Mexico. But this double-CD box is primarily aimed at lovers of mariachi who just can't get enough of the precision horn parts, swaying unison violins, and wildly joyful marimba. The unnamed ensemble on disc 1 brings impressive chops and unbridled enthusiasm that sweeps freshness even into standards like "La Cucaracha," "The Mexican Hat Dance" (disguised here as "El Jarabe Tapatio"), and the ditty that's become the American ballpark warhorse, "Las Chiapanecas" (you won't fail to recognize the middle section). Disc 2 adds a romantic bent with yearning Latin vocals and, of all things, an electronic keyboard that does little to detract from the nostalgic atmosphere. For a rootsy, rough-and-tumble version of mariachi, treat yourself to the CD Sones from Jalisco by Mariachi Reyes del Aserradero. --Bob Tarte ... Read more

This CD is most of the music you'd hear from any decent mariachi band or a soundtrack for a Mexican restaurant. Not terribly inventive or daring and on some tracks the production values are subpar. If you know good music, then this CD is a must for your collection. I have followed mariachi music since childhood and over the years have come to appreciate the finer things in life. I have to tell you Mariachi Cobres interpretation of the son de mariachi is simply the best. Great vocals, great music, great listening.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Ever
This is the best mariachi CD ever. It is the first CD of Mariachi Cobre and represents the best representation of mexican folk music. The quality of voice and music is second to none; strong, vibrant and rich. It was my first mariachi CD and after 15 years of collecting is still the best. A must-have for the mariaci afficionado.

5-0 out of 5 stars THEY'RE MY REASON FOR PLAYING!!!
About five years ago I heard my first mariachi album. This was it and the richness of this groups sound overwhelmed me. They must be considered the best in th U.S. They filled me with so much pride that I actually began playing mariachi and aspire to maybe one day join the ranks of such superior talent. Cobre will not let you down. Wether its your first or hundreth mariachi cd, you will find nothin but satisfaction from this cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Like They Sound Live
If you have been to the Mexican pavilleon in Epcot center, you might have caught this very talented group performing there. I did and was impressed enough to buy their CD. I think the CD is wonderful. If it sounds polished it is because the group actually sounds that polished live. This is no sad sacked trio annoying you at your table in a mexican eatery, this is a serious group who are obviously trying to uphold a proud tradition of Mexican folkloric music. I would recommend this CD to anyone who wants something fun and different, and I would urge anyone who goes to Epcot center to see this group perform live.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Polished and Over Produced
I love mariachi music but was looking for something simple, emotional, and earthy. The vocals and instrumentals were excellent on this CD, but they have no feeling or emotion. I was looking for a modern version of Jose Alfredo Jimenez or Vicente Fernandez, instead this CD sounds more like a symphony. I prefer the street musicians to this kind of synthetic, over produced mariachi music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun-filled wonderful musical collection!
When one thinks of mariachis, what comes to mind is the large sombreros, the traditional uniforms, and blaring trumpets. Mariachis perform the most beautiful latin music ever.

Mariachi music doesn't have to be only instrumental, and a treat is to include vocals. Here, the vocals vary with rich deep sound to accentuate the instruments.

A variety of traditional rancheras, polkas, and ballads are included, and some of the classics that are forever associated with mariachi bands.

No mariachi CD is complete without "Guadalajara." And listen to the lone strings on "Cielito Lindo" probably the most popular Mexican song ever. If Lucy Ricardo knew it, everyone then knew it.

Another well-known song is the Mexican hat dance "Jarabe Tapatio". You can't help picture those dancers sashaying in their flared costumes. In the tune "El Mariachi", the background sound of the members exude a sound of reverberation.

Although there are more distinct versions of "La Marcha De Zacatecas" one can always appreciate this uplifting, marching dance song..... MZRIZZ

5-0 out of 5 stars A great buy!
Twenty selections for a low price, but that's not all. There is a trace of an echo in some of these "exitos" that make you feel as though you are there in the public square or ballroom in Old Mexico. The pace of some selections is not as fast and frantic as some (Norte) Americanized versions of mariachi. This traditional mariachi is very satisfying. I am addicted to mariachi and could listen to it indefinitely without growing weary of it. If you're like me, you will enjoy Silvestre Vargas and his band.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
As the son of a professional musician, I have acquired a reasonable taste and appreciation for all kinds of music. When I recently saw Mariachi Cobre on TV I was astounded by the excellence of this group. They combine the very best of instrumentalists, vocalists, and arrangements to produce a sound that is the best of the best in the world of Mariachi Music today. Steve Carillo's classical training and voice quality make him a lead mariachi without peer...I am truly astounded by him and the Cobre's many gifted members. If you haven't heard Mariachi Cobre before, Este Es Mi Mariachi presents them at their finest. And when you listen to Steve sing "Estrellita"...well, just remember, I told he was superb.

5-0 out of 5 stars They Are The Best In The US!!!
I remmember hearing my first mariachi album about five years ago. It was Cobres self entitled Cd. Sinced then, I have began playing mariachi, and hope to be as good as they are some day. Their musicianship is amazing and their voices pure gold. This Cd is just one example of their amazing talents. Thanks guys and, QUE SIGE LA TRADICION!!!!!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I put this CD on everytime I need a quick pick me up!
After listening to this CD, I love mariachi music. I don't understand the language, but the music touchs my heart and spirit. I also thoroughly enjoyed listening to the songs Linda Ronstadt sang with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars These musicians are very talented and entertaining.
Mariachi Cobre has been my favorite group of musicians from the time I first heard them on a recording. They bring to the listener the genuine sound of MARIACHI. When you listen to them perform you get this feeling that you are in Mexico. You also know for certain that they are having a great time as they perform; almost as though they are trying to make one another have even more fun than the next musician. I can get out of a slump in the middle of the day by playing any of their CD's. Sigan adelante muchachos! Keep moving forward ahead of us guys!

I recently had the privilege of attending a Mariachi festival in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I was given a live taste of the outstanding work performed by Sol de Mexico with this CD.
