While she came to global prominence as the female singer on the Buena Vista Social Club album and in the film, Omara Portuondo has a career that--like the other participants--stretches back many years. She puts her experience to good use on this record, sounding for all the world like a Cuban Billie Holiday, smoky and quietly tragic, with a history of lost love. The lush arrangements, which often sound transplanted straight from 1950s Havana, frame her voice exquisitely while guests such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, and Rubén González add their inimitable talents to the mix. Her reading of "The Man I Love" ("El Hombre Que Yo Ame") is also a microcosm of the disc--slightly jazzy, with a yearning vocal that's emotive without ever being overwrought. There's little doubt that Portuondo is a world-class singer, and this is the ideal showcase for her extraordinary talents. --Chris Nickson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From the heart....
I'm not deep into Cuban music, and haven't heard of Omara Portuondo before, but I find this a beautiful and treasurable CD. She sings from the heart of a love that hurts, and in a number of styles including a couple I'm not familiar with: guajiro, bolero, mambo, habanera, etc. I especially enjoyed "Veinte Anos" with the trombone and bass dialogue as introduction. And I certainly wasn't expecting her version of Gershwin's "El hombre que you ame". The familiar "Siempre en Mi Corazon" was another favorite. Yet, I enjoyed each and every one of the other numbers. She has a dramatically expressive voice and can carry one with her emotion. If, as one reviewer indicates, her voice isn't what it once was, it still is, to me, one of the great voices one can hear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Omara Portuondo's enchanting voice will get you addicted
When I watched Buena Vista Social Club, I especially loved the studio recording of "Silencio" with Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo and also "Veinte Anos" from the Carnegie Hall concert. When I listened to this CD for the first time, I couldn't believe just how good Omara Portuondo really sings. In a variety of Cuban styles (Guajira, Bolero, Mambo, Son, ...) she sings about lost love. But even though the themes of the songs are similar, the music is always completely different (sometimes even Jazz-like). I think at least half of the songs on this album are my favorite songs now. In case you just watched the movie but don't have the soundtrack, you should be aware that the version of "Veinte Anos" is very different from the version on the Buena Vista Social Club album (the movie soundtrack). It's much slower and has - except for the lyrics and tristess - not much in common with the "original". Beautiful music!

5-0 out of 5 stars Builds on a great foundation
Since I was first introduced to the jewels of Cuba's past, I have craved more and more of this wonderful music. Omara's solo CD does not dissapoint, her voice is beautiful and the orchestrations are superb. Detractors of Ry Cooder's slide guitar will be happy to know that it is absent from this release.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I don't think I need to write much about this one. It's simply superb as other projects by Bueno Vista Social Club. If you are a fun of Cesaria Evora, this is another voice you will fall in love with.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you Have a BVSC Album, This is a Must Have
I feel this is a much better listening experience if you listen to any of the other Buena Vista Social Club albums on a regular basis. I admit, it's not my favorite...the overall tempo is slower than the soundtrack or either of Ibrahim's albums. However, it easily earns 5 stars...even on a 4 star scale. I just so happen to prefer the quicker time of the other albums. This album has a deeper more emotional tone. Maybe because the focus is placed on a woman unlike the other BVSC releases...I'm only speculating as I don't understand the lyrics.

I personally can't imagine having this album only, so be sure to take advantage of Amazon and the Marketplace's selection of Afro-Cuban music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Tito Puente CDs available
This is easily one of the best Tito Puente CDs availabe. A compilation of some of Tito's best songs, these versions inspire awe and intense dancing. In addition, the notes by Joe Conzo succinctly detail Puente's life from the beginning of his musical career (or at least by the time Tito was 13 ... ), Tito's influences, playing with Machito, to the Navy in WWII, to the Palladium era and beyond.

Even just the mention of the infamous and influential Palladium establishes the authenticity of the biography, the music and the album. Within the New York Mambo scene, abundant reference is still made to the Palladium, both to the music and the dancing (which cannot exist without each other). Conzo notes that "Ran Kan Kan" was first recorded in 1949 -- a fact that many of the people 'in the know' today are not familiar with.

This CD is so good that for a while, it was the first thing I wanted to hear in the morning and the last music I wanted to hear at night. Don't miss this one!

Thanks go first and foremost to the creators and second to those who chronicle the music, the musicians and the culture. The growth in this art achieved by the next generation will only be possible because they learned from you.

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Great Musical Talent
Tito Puente Made Incredible Music. The Grooves&Arrangements were Ahead of Their Time. You Feel The Emotions&Vibes all The way Thru here.his Music was World Music. The Musicians are Great as well.it's very Essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars You gotta dance, you can't help it
I love this album. I have a bunch of Tito's stuff, close to all of it, I imagine. (I don't think anyone has every Tito album, not even Tito.) This one's nearly as hot as his 50's releases. He just gets more tasteful and refined without damping his red-hot latin soul. And I love Carlos, but this is how Oye Como Va is SUPPOSED to sound

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Puente is a exellent music artist
Mr. Puente is an exellent music artist and not only is his music very addicting but he is quite a comic when performing live shows I definitly give Tito five stars because he is truly a great musician, and a shout out ta SR. SHORTY.

5-0 out of 5 stars Latin music lovers watchout, this is a great CD
I became a fan of Tito and Latin music after listening to this wonderfully ecclectic CD. Being a musician myself, I was in awe of the great players and Tito's leadership. The beats are fantastic, guaranteed to move you. Buy it, and try it, I guarantee you will not be disappointed! ... Read more

A well chosen compilation of 12 songs, "Afro Latino" features artists from both sides of the Atlantic, including some based in the USA. The marriage of African and Cuban rhythm and tradition is incredibly fertile, witnessed by the many different takes on this most sensual and swinging mix from Cuba, Senegal, Angola, Cape Verde, The Congo, and even Peru. From the acoustic guitar-led Quarteto Oriente (playing in Cuba's "oriente" style) to Congo's soukous supergroup Les 4 Etoiles, the legendary Orchestra Baobab and Africando, this is a top flight introduction to the many flavors of Afro-Cuban music. Included from Putamayo's Artist label are the salsa tinged Ricardo Lemvo & Makina Loca and well established Congolese guitarist/songwriter Sam Mangwana, now residing in the USA. Afro-Cuban music has never been more vital, and this collection is a good place to start your explorations. --Derek Rath ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Make sure you HIDE it from your friends!!
Listen folks...everytime I play this CD, in the car, in my backyard...people I don't even know approach me wondering "Where can I get that awesome music?" !! It's the true gem in my vast collection...so warm...so rich...and get this....IT WAS A GIFT from an ex-girlfriend....and I'm married. That tells you how great it is! I can never let it out of my sight, because when people first hear it, they want to slip it in their pocket! Go ahead and get it folks..

4-0 out of 5 stars Rico Mammbo!
This CD has a lot of various Afro-Cuban cuts. Some have a faster beat for dancing and others are more suave. Definitely music that will make you warm when you feel the beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I used to own 3 CD stores and ran a recording studio and a sound company. I've listened to just about everything. I guess I just got burned out on the same ole stuff - the same recycled riffs, recyled bands, etc. When I heard this disc, it blew me away. I've tried to track down the artists on the disc and buy their cds, too. But, most of these groups don't have any releases you can buy in the states - just a couple do. Not only are the artists great. Whoever put this compilation together deserves a lot of the credit. Probably the same person who compiled Samba Bosa Nova, another Putumayo masterpiece. It's a keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for a great collection of music
If you have an ear for this genre of music, or if you are looking to get a taste, this is by far one of the most lively, fun and fantastic CDs you could get your hands on. The first song will capture your tapping feet and the guitar on Mujer Magica will mesmerize your senses. This is a must have CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Feel the Rhythms in Afro-Latino music
Welcome to the sensational music of Putamayo Artists. This album is a wonderful introduction to Afro-Cuban sounds. Combinations of 'Cubanesque' rhythms and African folk rhythms create a irresistable sound that, as the CD claims, is "Guaranteed to make you feel good!" I used to live in Miami and this music reminds me of the Cuban passion for good music. If you are not familiar with this sound, this album would make a wonderful initiation into the world of 'musica Latina'. This CD includes a booklet which explains how Cuban sounds are introduced into African culture. It also details each artist featured, which instruments played (some you've never heard), and the background of the story being told. Be prepared to get up and dance! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good album, but sounds a little off
I'd give it 4 stars but the introduction tracks are annoying and the "live" sound sounds fake to me. The crowd feels artificial, the recordings sound almost studio like, and the segways don't sound right.
If you can get past that, the music is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic album
Put this on when you want to dance!

5-0 out of 5 stars Chock full of great artists
This is truly a CD worth having. It's full of great music from some of the best musicians in Salsa music. Definitely a keeper. I enjoy listening to it in my car as well as when I'm dancing with friends. One of my favorite tracks is from the Awesome band from Japan, Orquestra De La Luz. I love the live sound! Higly recommended.

The septuagenarian Cuban singer Omara Portundo is the lone female crooner ofthe famed Buena VistaSocial Club. But in the 1940s and '50s, she was the velvet voiceof the jazz/bossa nova inspired genre known as filin. On her secondsolo CD, which translates as "Flower of Love," Portundo leads an assembly ofCuban and Brazilian musicians, featuring her Buena Vista bandmates, singer Ibrahim Ferrer andbassist Orlando CachaitoLopez. The Congolese guitar whiz Papi Oviedo, plays theCuban tres on "Amor de Mis Amores," "Habanera Ven," "Amorosa Guajira,"and the title track. Portundo's poetic pipes sweeten these Latin ballads, from the afro anthemed "Tabu," to "Casa Color," a new song penned forher by Brazil's Carlinhos Brown. Sonically seasoned with strings, woodwinds, guitars, and background vocals, Portundo's "musical love letters" arepostmarked with five decades of Afro-Cuban artistry. --Eugene Holley,Jr. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Definite Grammy Nominee
Omara Portuondo's voice would make any song sound good. What this CD lacks in guest stars, Omara makes up for it with some great classic Cuban songs and brazilian influenced arrangements. She even sings the last track partly in Portuguese. As with all these Cuban albums recorded in the EGREM studios, there is a unique sound the old studio environment leaves on the recorded works. This is a great album by the only woman of the Buena Vista Social Club, not too many members are left, enjoy this CD from one of the survivors. ... Read more

She will be with us forever thorough her music!

5-0 out of 5 stars Azucaaar!!!!!
It's incredible that she's not with us any longer but her memory and music will always survive.

"Hits mix" it's an album that contains some of her many, many hits. The remixes are very good, there's a fusion between salsa and dance music. The production starts with one of her biggest hits that happened to be her last, I'm talking about "La negra tiene tumbao", the remix is very good as the spanglish version.
My favorite song is the 1995 hit "Que le den candela", but you'll have fun also with songs like: "La sopa", "La vida es un carnaval" and the covers from Santana and Gloria Gaynor ("Oye como va" and "Yo vivire").
If your looking for something essencial from Celia. This is one. ... Read more

Queen of salsa Celia Cruz was royalty long before the music was even called that. 100% Azucar collects 19 tracks from her '50s and '60s output on the Seeco label. Smoking even at medium tempos, the disc is full of the hot mambo rhythms of the Sonora Matancera band and the full-throttle vocals of "la incomparable Celia." 5-0 out of 5 stars La perla de Cuba...
Celia Cruz is a very talented artist. Her music speaks of the rich Cuban culture from which her experience grows. In this particular collection, Cruz sings songs of celebration in her native Spanish tongue, as well of songs of praise and reverence to Santeria/Yoruba orishas in the Yoruba language. And one need not be fluent in Spanish and/or Yoruba to appreciate Celia's music. Her lively rythms and honey-coated voice carry the beat straight to your feet (by way of the heart). This is a collection that all are sure to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm Blown Away!
All I can say is WOW! I must confess, not being well-versed in the names of stars of Latin music, that I had never heard of Celia Cruz until the last few days when there was much press coverage of her passing. This morning I was idly scanning through channels on my short-wave radio and happened upon a Radio Marti program paying tribute to Celia Cruz, and her early recordings in particular. I heard many of the selections on this CD and I can't tell you how much I enjoyed them! Her music is infectious! This CD goes on my wish list, soon to be in my shopping cart!

5-0 out of 5 stars A bit nostalgia!!!
This album is great. It shows Celia's voice young and crisp. I loved her energy and kindness towards others. We will miss Celia.

This album takes you back in time. It shows why Cuban music is so awesome and why it is loved worldwide.

"100% Azucar" is the perfect introduction to the magic that was Celia Cruz. 5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable! chea!
This crazy mf has an insane flow! The beats are some of the illest of the year, maybe the decade! His rap verses are incredible, fn flawless. Even the hooks are hot. If you like music you MUST get this album. In fact, yes I DEMAND that you get this album: do it! do it! I, as dictator of Everything have decided. yes, yes, desi is certainly one of the greatest people in the history of the world- compared to him, most people are sucky and futile. Don't you agree??
So in conclusion, please pick up this album: once you've heard it you will understand how your entire life was worthless with out it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Desi!
I really enjoyed this CD a lot. It is a nice blend of familiar
tunes as well as ones I've never heard in his beautiful native
language. If you are a huge Desi Arnaz fan like I am, definitely
consider adding this to your collection. What a beautiful talented artist he was and will continue to be through his music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Desi Arnaz: Out Of Lucy's Shadows
Desi Arnaz never really got the recognition that he deserved. Not only was he a great actor and comedian, but a wonderful singer and bandleader as well. This collection of his best known hits is really a must for anyone who likes Cuban music and/or Desi Arnaz.

Now Desi Arnaz was no Xavier Cugat, but he had his own dramatic musical style. That style is showcased on recordings like "Cuban Pete","Peanut Vendor", and his most famous recording from 1946 "Babalu". His featured female vocalist Jane Harvey is also featured, and she does a charming rendition on "A Rainy Night In Rio". I recommend this CD, because I am not only a fan of Desi Arnaz, but of great music as well... ... Read more

The dictum "art transcends politics" is aurally illustrated on thisrecording, which chronicles a seven-day get-together in Havana withAmerican, English, and Cuban musicians in 1999. It boasts a broad range ofartists--from blues rockers Bonnie Raitt and smooth jazz saxophonist DaveKoz, to their lesser-known Cuban counterparts like Yadira Lopez, CarlosAlfonso, and Rey Guerra. On "Vacilon," Gladys Knight and Edesio Alejandromerge African-American soul and the Afro-Cuban bolero. 1970s icon PeterFrampton and Alberto Tosca turn in a midtempo percussion and guitar-drivenditty, "Hey, Hey," while drummer Mick Fleetwood, Todd Smallwood, and AugustoEnriquez get down on the anthemic "One World." 5-0 out of 5 stars Love It Love It Love It
I am new to Lounge but knew I loved Austin Powers-type music so I took a chance on this one and this is my favorite CD. I need two copies, one for my car and one for the house! Many of the artists weren't familiar to me but it was love at first listen with Ann-Margret's 13 Men (first track), then an elevator-muzak style Girl from Ipanema and the classics Soul Bossa Nova and Mais Que Nada (you'll know it when you hear it). House of Bamboo is so much fun as is Hot Barbeque and a different version of Dave Brubeck's Take Five. It's all great - run, don't walk, to get out your martini glasses. Oh, and last but not least, the inside jacket is jam-packed with career bios of each artist. This is a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars We play this every Thursday during our Martini Thursdays
This CD has it all. It is great. All you have to do is make some martinis, put this CD on. As soon as Ann Margaret starts with "13 Men" it sets the scene.

5-0 out of 5 stars This it the optimum CD to sip martinis to
Of all the collections of vintage tunes, this is my favourite. Is it because it begins with Miss Ann-Margaret singing about her "Thirteen men"? Maybe. But every song just intensifies the grooviness of this album. Hearing Soul Sauce is bound to make you into a much cooler and hipper individual. "Comin' home baby" is just a gem with that crazy cool Mel singing / talking stern to his baby. It just gets better and better. "I'm not talking" is a jazzy swinger that ends the album nicely. Perfect for semi-formal parties where you want to add a touch of class and show your unique style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bossa nova tunes
This is a selection of tunes any jazz lover or party goer will be able to groove with. With classic tracks like Baby Elephant Walk, this album offers lots easy fun. If you liked the theme song to Austin Powers your in luck, Soul Bossa Nova (the tracks actual name) is just one of the many jivin' boppers you'll find here. A great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure BIG Band Salsa
This is true big band sound salsa, before the name salsa became popular. Originally released in 1958, You can go back and feel how great this music was back then and still feel the how great it still is today. This tells you this is a treasure chest of great music. Just enjoy and dance as if he is playing at the good old days at the Palladium Dance night,in NYC. The recordings allow you to hear clearly every instrument that was played and precise harmony of the full orchestra. Be carefull playing this while driving in the car, you will be force to pull over and dance a few cuts.

5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this!
One of Tito's tightest and most soulful albums, with sharp-sounding horn charts and funky rhythms galore. Recording with the full technical expertise of the RCA studios behind him, Puente's late '50s albums had much richer, better defined sound than competitors on smaller, independent labels, and the brass tones that distort into distorted shrillness on other albums are smooth and clear here. Great material, and a ton of tight session players who were the cream of the crop in the latin dance scene. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
A must for anyone looking for a good sample of some classic mambos, jazz suites, and one bolero from Tito.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Tito!
I'm not a mambo or or latin music aficionado, but if you just want a fun, upbeat, latin album by this music legend then I recommend this one! I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Puente's dancing music greatest album!
At the top of his Palladium days, the first record featuring singer Santos Colon, the sound of his big band... this superb collection is Puente's dancing music greatest album! Many tracks were prepared for this record and the selected ones reveal the genius of the masters, or how they select their material. Recorded circa 1957-58 Dance Mania quickly became a classical. It has endured the passage of time and it continues to be a best seller, in various re-issues. The only other Puente record at this level is Night Beat, on jazz, and perhaps some in the Ensemble Latin Jazz series. ... Read more

This CD is well worth your dollar...40 impeccable recordings, the Cuban musical genius of Perez Prado, the precise instrumentations of his highly talented Mexican band members, and a great blend of orginal compositions and latin standards.\ makes this a must have album!

5-0 out of 5 stars They don't make`m like they used to !
Nostalgic with an unmatched rhythm that can not be found in our
contemporary latin music. Perez Prado created with his mambo not just another fad but an epoch that that has extended its vibrancy until today. Anybody with good knowledge and taste for good music, particularly latin, will agree of the tremendous genious behind Perez Prado`s Mambo. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellente!
Just got this today and it's exactly what I hoped for! The other reviewers were on the mark! The earlier Cugat orchestration and arrangements are so lovely and evocative. I'm a sucker for the sound of old recordings--these are from the 30's--they just had a warmth that is lost as recording equipment improved. But I still must get something with Besame Mucho . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, KID
This compilation of Cugat recordings from 1935-1946 is one of the "sexiest" CD'S my collection. If you're a fan of many Hollywood films of that period these arrangements will send chills up your spine. Close your eyes and you're sitting at the Waldorf Bar in white tie with Bogie or George Raft; or you're an OSS agent sitting in a South American cabaret with Andrea King keeping one eye on Conrad Veidt and the other on Akim Tamiroff. The tunes are familiar and haunting. You may not remember the titles but you'll recognize the music of that genre.Several vocals by Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore add to your listening delight. The slow samba "BAIA" is an elixir with greater power than Viagra. The other rumbas, congas and tangos are superb; Cugat's distinctive rhythmic arrangements cast a hypnotic spell on the listener. Buy this album!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great music from an era gone by....
While on a Desi Arnez binge, I bought this CD not really knowing what to expect. I had read the book on Cugat by his ex-wife, and was curious as to his music. And what music it is. I've had this CD in my car's changer for two weeks now, and I'm listening to it more than the other five CD's combined. The music is superb, the perfect antidote to a long day at work. There's quite a variety of tunes, and the rhythm section has to be heard to be believed. And this is music that's a half century old! However, a warning to the guys: Listening to this CD may make you want to don tux-n-tails, order a Martini or Manhattan, and then let your feet fly across the dance floor with your Lady Love!

4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, Terrific and Nostaligic........More....
One of the best Latin Big Band Leaders of our century. I suggest adding this one to your collection! Ciao! Josh

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!! Extremely good fun - buy it!!
It's cheesy and it's camp, but if you're looking for the best available introduction to this prolific artist, then you can't fail with this delightful compilation. Sit back, relax and pour yourself a cocktail...!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great first Tito Puente album
Get a great introduction to the early work of Tito Puente, El Rey, the King. Tito Puente, salsa extraordinaire and father of afro-jazz, was an incredible talent who will be long remembered. This CD is the perfect collection to get started with Puente's vast library.

Smooth latin grooves are guaranteed on every track. Scary tribal rhythms shine through on Dance of the Headhunters. As one of my friends said, if you don't bob your head to Ti Mon Bo, you probably don't have a pulse. Night Ritual, Hong Kong Mambo, and El Cayuco would rank as some of my favorites if I had to choose, but thankfully I don't.

Informative liner notes give a good history lesson about Tito's roots, how he begun, and how he lasted and played amazing music even into his older years. Puente will certainly be remembered for one of the longest lasting, highest quality musicians the world has ever seen.

A great stepping stone for other Puente albums, this will give a brief introduction to many of the styles Puente cultivated over the years. I suggest Mambo Birdland: Dancemania, a live album from the late 1990s, as a wonderful chance to hear Puente and his full orchestra in rare form, playing a live show in the Palladium, decades after his playing originally sparkled there.

A high quality album all around, a great beginning to more Puente albums. Highly recommended to any newcomers to salsa who have interest. As the liner notes proclaim, El Rey esta meurte: long live the King! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish there were more stars to give!
Plain and simple, this album blew me away! If you are a fan of live music, a fan of salsa, and most importantly a fan of La Reina, then this is a must for your collection. Nowhere will you find a tighter, more energetic band, and Ms. Cruz (Dr. Cruz in some circles) is at her interpretive best. Her guests are also quite remarkable and all give memorable, enjoyable performances - her longtime collaborator and stage buddy Johnny Pacheco, La India, her husband Pedro Knight and the late, truly great Tito Puente, El Rey de Timbales. All of the songs are great, but I particularly love Usted Abuso, La Vida Es En Carnaval, Guantanamera and Cucala. BUY THIS CD - Long live the Queen of Salsa!

5-0 out of 5 stars La Reina de la Salsa/The Queen of Salsa
In one of her most memorable stage concerts, Celia Cruz along with the help of some famous friends celebrate the world of Salsa music in pure splendor. "Celia Cruz & Friends: A Night of Salsa" is a PBS-produced special that features Celia performing for a sold-out crowd in Hartford, Connecticut. Performing many of her classics, including her trademark song, "Guantanamera," Celia is joined on stage by the late, great Tito Puente, who along with a full Latin orchestra rocks the house by all means necessary. My favorite song, "La Vida es un Carnaval" showcases Celia's ability to stir a crowd with her earthly vocals, her passion for salsa, and her strong cultural ties with the salsa music communities in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and New York. This song will blow anyone away! Trust me!

Later in the program, she is joined on stage by her longtime friend and duet partner, Johnny Pacheco, and by La India, who is known to many as the "Princess of Salsa." This performance, which was the final time Celia and Tito performed before his death in May 2000, is not only a fitting tribute to Celia, but to Tito, who Celia has admired and loved since he helped her reach international stardom upon her arrival to New York after she left Cuba shortly after the Cuban Revolution of 1959. Celia never forgets those who helped her in the past and she graciously gives accolades to all the Puerto Rican artists who always were there for her.

Celia is a true diva. Her choice of costumes and wigs has made her somewhat of a Latina Tina Turner, and her stage persona can't be matched even today. "Celia Cruz & Friends: A Night of Salsa" will provide you with an exciting, rhythm-filled performance that all with enjoy. There are no language barriers when it comes to music appreciation and Celia and friends will validate this statement entirely!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite.
I was disappointed. The CD doesn't have the type of Salsa music that would make me want to dance. Bummed.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUENISIMO
MUY BUEN DISCO GRABADO EN VIVO. CELIA SEGUIRA SIENDO LA DUEÑA Y SEÑORA DE LA SALSA!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of her best works yet!!!
I love this album. I just picked it up and i could not stop listening to it. Her voice is none like the others. She has been probably the best sensation in latin music history. Her death was a sad day for those who cherished and love her music. She will always live on in our hearts. This album will have you on your feet dancing in no time. BUY IT!!!! IT'S THE BEST!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Celia Cruz Boleros Eternos is close to the heart
I ordered this album thinking that I was going to relive the music that in my childhood I had listened in family parties and saw my parents dance (when there was a lighter spring in their step.) I was not wrong! From the very first cut " Nostalgia de Palmeras" to very last note in this album there is nothing but a sequence of memories. Some good some bad, but all in all this album is a journey into memories held dear by my heart and they define me as well as many other forty somethings. More objectively I can say that if you are a latino, or at least a Spanish speaking Anglo, the beauty of the lirics,- sometimes coy, at times romantic and often unabashedly elegant- offer an experience defined every bit by the clarion of her voice as by the beauty of orchestration. In the the remastering process all of it comes through with three dimensional qualities. Celia's interpretations compiled in this album are from different moments in her career. You can actually appreciative that in spite of the passage of time her voice got stronger, sharper and never, never lost that magic of inflexion and nuance that makes every song uniquely hers. Celia was and still is a phenomenon in music very much like Edith Piaf, Nana Mouskury, Judy Garland, Roberta Flack,Tina Turner, Barbara Streisand, Pat LaBelle, and Judy Collins. Celia certainly lead a less tempestuous life compared to some of the lives of these Divas. Nonetheless she had her own share of suffering and yearning. Suffering and yearning that she used to fuel her artistry in a positive and creative manner that kept her always relevant and in demand. Along decades Celia poured her heart into her singing, without vanity or self-serving egotism. Every ounce of her honesty and unusual craft as an artist remains in history through many recordings. This one is certainly not an exception. ... Read more

After bursting onto the Latin-music scene in the early '60s, Eddie Palmieri has spent the last four decades exploring Afro-Caribbean music, garnering a shelf-load of Latin Jazz Grammys along the way. La Perfecta II mixes the excitement of his early innovations in salsa, charange, mambo, and other idioms with the wide sonic spectrum of the modern recording studio. Exuding warmth and clarity, Palmieri's album mixes five older pieces with six new ones. The album takes its name from his La Perfecta ensemble, which disbanded in 1968. This reconvening, with a set of younger musicians, is based on fortuitous happenstance, as was the original band's chance encounter between Palmieri and the late Barry Rogers. Palmieri's delight in potent arrangements and compositions with ample room for improvisation sounds easy enough, but the ambitious change he brought to the music stills casts a long shadow today. This album is no mere rehashing, rather it is flush with its own vitality. --David Greenberger ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best from the best and a pleasant surprise.
Eddie Palmieri's Conjunto La Perfecta was a legendary band that recorded some truly amazing and wonderful albums during the 1960s and early '70s (most of which are available currently on CD). This CD features a "Modern" version of La Perfecta and is chock-full of the hot and fiery salsa that made Palmieri a salsa legend. All the songs on this one are winners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfecta Redux
I have many of the first wax pressings found on Perfecta II, a much awaited call and lesson in Eddie Palmieri's instructive and indelible musical lexicon. To hear these salsa classics freshly minted and improved with new voices and arrangements as well as much improved recording technology helps to validate Maestro Palmieri's lasting place and importance in our musical collective. You'll definitely kick back and reminisce or jump and grab the first dancing partner you can and go all out. Gracias Molestoso!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfecta in every sense of the word.
When I read the article titled, "Latin Music Patriarch Stays Hungry" in the New York Times on April 30, 2002, by renowned music critic, Ben Ratliff, I was intrigued. When I heard the CD, I understood. Perfecta II speaks volumes for a genre that currently has difficulty completing a sentence. As I listen to the CD, I can only imagine the dancers at the Palladium trying to compete with the powerful and pulsating rhythms, of "Tirandote Flores" or "Cuidate Compay", which Mr. Palmieri and his original orchestra brought to life 40 years ago. This CD is a historiography of sorts, where only a genius like Mr. Palmieri deftly combines a variety of sounds spanning 40 years of his artistry.- from classic salsa to exploratory Latin jazz, such as "Chekere Agent Man". It is refreshing to see Mr. Palmieri persevere in his artform, and maintain his artistic integrity, while the genre he helped create is creatively destitute and commercial in the most tragic sense. Legendary scholar at Yale University, Dr. Robert Farris Thompson, even wrote in his dedication to Eddie for lifetime achievement, "You remind me of Aeneas, who lost Troy but found Rome. You closed the Palladium in 1966. And though we lost the Palladium, you found salsa....you teach us how to triumph over time." Thank you Eddie for showing us that salsa lives on, and that it lives on because of you. Vaya "Molestoso"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong stuff from an old pro
This disc starts off with several good, old-fashioned salsa sizzlers, and gradually works its way into jazzier terrain. Even on the Latin Jazz tracks, Palmieri keeps a certain muscular aggressiveness to his work, super-swinging and melodically rich -- all in all, pretty nice stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes! A master resturns
I saw Eddie Palmieri in concert in New Haven monday night, where he announced that this album was coming out the next day. I ran to the stroe and picked it up immediately.

I am listening to it right now as I write this, I love it. I already know tha tI am going to play this A LOT. ... Read more
