5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best
Well, to me this is one of Julio's best cd's. I own it in Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. Baila Morena has a great cumbia beat, and it is great to dance to. The rhythm runs through your body making you want to explode if you don't get up and dance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnifico!!
I've herd of Julio's music (in spanish & english) and I have to say that this is one of his best recordings. This CD wakes me up in the morning. If you have never bought a Julio Iglesias CD and you are trying to decide, don't hesitate on this one, GET IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Smoothie at his smoothest
From 1995, this is a really gorgeous CD, a velvety musical treat from start to finish. 5 of the 10 songs are written by the team of Roberto Levi and Rafael Ferro, and are beautiful, romantic baladas, with "Baila Morena" a lovely melody with a Carribean taste to it. Other good rythmic tracks are "Derroche", by Manuel Giménez, and my favorite, "Agua Dulce, Agua Salá", by Estéfano, Donato, and Batt.

"Con el pasar de los años~he aprendido en la vida~que se vive intensamente~porque si no se termina"

There is also a medley of rumbas that are mighty fine, and a sad song of lost love "Sin Excusas ni Rodeos" which was written by Julio, along with Estéfano, Donato, and Arcusa...the CD finishes with the wonderful Alvarez/Beigbeder "Vuela Alto". Needless to say, the arrangements are lush and the musicianship top notch. The Spanish guitar of Toledo deserves a mention in "La Luna me Engaño".

This CD is like one of those frothy, iced cappuccino drinks I indulge in once in a while...maybe a little sweet, but oh so yummy to the last drop.

5-0 out of 5 stars muy excellante!!
I have had this cd for awhile and can tell you honestly that it is one of the best I've heard. The music is relaxing yet familier somehow...haunting yet inviting...definitly one of his best!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Casually elegant music.
I tend to listen to more classical music and opera than pop. Yet, there is something about Julio's music that really appeals to me. In a phrase, I think it is casually elegant music, and this album is a strong example. The title track has a lonely, enchanting sound to it. If you like Julio, I'm sure you'll love this album. If you have had an interest in buying one of his albums, this is probably a good start--although the double CD " Mi Vida" might be best for a newcomer. In any case, enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great sound quality
Not only were the songs a wonderful return to music I listened to as I was growing up, but the quality of the recordings was spectacular. I understand that Sony used a "special" process for their Leyenda series of recordings, and the results make this (and volume 2) well worth the price. This disc is a perfect introduction to bolero music if you aren't already a fan, and a "must have" if you are!

5-0 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking songs from an amazing new artist
I first heard Nil Lara on a live radio broadcast did here in San Diego. I was very impressed with both his voice and the way he mixed rock, blues, latin and reggae influences in the same song so successfully. After hearing the concert I bought the CD and was equally immpressed with his unwillingness to fall into any given category. His debut album veers from rock to funk to salsa to touching ballads all with great success. He even sings in English and Spanish within the same song. The instumentation is also very unique. He plays two latin folk instruments called a quatro and tres that are a cross between a banjo and a guitar. A very cool sound when they are backed by a solid rock quartet. I would highly recommend this CD and a trip to his live show. I caught his act last year at UCSD when he opened for Rusted Root. I waited til the set was over and them just cruised over to the side of the stage and motioned for him to come over. He did with no hesitation and gladly signed a CD for my girlfriend. As we left the venue (during Rusted Roots set...sorry guys) there was Nil standing alone in the lobby. We took this opportunity to let him know how much we enjoyed the album and wished him well on the rest of the tour. He was kind off shy but very nice. I'm looking forward to the follow up release and tour with great anticipation. I think this is an artist that may take a while to catch on but will have great staying power.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is Real Latin Pop
Cuban Nil Lara makes an impressive debut with this eponymous album released almost four years ago. This is what the Latin music revolution was supposed to sound like. It's too bad Lara's talent has gone undiscovered. He covers a wide range of influences, seen in his Cuban rhythms and American rock guitars. It is a perfect fusion of styles and cultures however. Lara excels lyrically and vocally in this bilingual album. English-language tracks that stand out above the rest (though the entire album is stocked with well-crafted pop gems) are "Fighting For My Love" and "Baby." "Baro" and the unforgettable "Crawl," which mixes languages from chorus to verse, are excellent tracks on the Spanish side of the coin. An excellent album which gets better with every listen.

Quick Picks: If you like these, try Nil Lara. Or if you like Nil Lara, give these a chance: Los Lobos, Santana, Enrique Iglesias.

5-0 out of 5 stars something that is timeless
well he's finally out of the woodworks after this release with a few follow-up albums. if you're lucky enough to get your hands on the newest stuff congrats. I found this album while it was still considered a tough find right when it was released after watching a PBS special "On Tour". It's an album you can play on Sunday mornings to kick you off on the right foot. It's beyond me why anyone would let this CD go used, so be wise and snag it cheap while you can.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Performer!
This CD is STILL one of my favorites. I eagerly anticipate the arrival of his two new CD's on ( My favorite tracks are Baro and Bleeding. DO NOT PASS THIS ONE UP! The man is a genius! StaceyLynn.

A bevy of high-profile guests pops up on Amor, Familia y Respeto --Sheila E., Chris Perez, Nu Flavor, Fito Olivares, eventalk-show host Cristina--but A.B. Quintanilla y los KumbiaKings remain front and center on their inspired debut album. Much like he didwith his late sister Selena, Quintanilla fuses the traditional cumbia soundwith reggae, rap, rock, and dance music on songs such as "Azúcar,""Fuiste Mala," and "Reggae Kumbia," turning the Tejano sound on its head. Thegroup also dabbles in old-school R&B on "Together," featuring vocals by thelate Roger Troutman, and"U Don't Love Me," a silky crossover-hit ballad. Amor, Familia y Respetoalso features "Oh No," a sweet cumbia cowritten by Selena that she never had thechance to record, but which her brother included here as a tribute. --JoeyGuerra

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Cumbia
This is one of my favorit CD's. My Bestfriend doesn't speek spanish but she loves this CD, it is a very dancible and upbeat CD. it has taken classic cumbia and made it more modern for the newer generation of listiners but it also interests older classic cumbia lovers too! this CD shows the changes SELENA was doing with her own music. A.B. has a great talent for writing and i can't wait for his next CD. He has taken the style he and Selena created and if she were still here she would ahve changed the style even more like this CD. this is a wonderfull CD,even though it is mostly in spanish I feel that it has potential in the english market, it is latin but not so that it can not be enjoyed in the anglo market. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the true Juanes, He needs to go revisit his roots
This is the true Juanes, the one we saw on "Un Dia Normal". An artist with a great energy, a need to make music and let everyone know what he thinks. This album reflects the rocks roots of the now pop singer. With his latest album "Un Dia Normal", Juanes changed from being a revel rock singer to a submissive pop. I know his stuff sells, and that is why he has changed it so much, but he needs to remember he statted to make music in the first place. Juanes please go back to your rock roots.

5-0 out of 5 stars Juanes antes de ser Juanes

5-0 out of 5 stars The best music I've ever heard!!!
In spanish class our teacher added a little spice one day to her lesson. We listened to Roca Rosa and Raza and tried to translate it and sing it. I would normally not enjoy the pop kind of sound but I really thought it was great. It was so much fun and the music was the type to make you want to get up and dance. I really enjoyed this cd. The music is so great. Everyone should have a copy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Por siempre Ekhymosis...
... Red-hot rhythms and percolating percussion drive the excellentself-titled debut by this young foursome. But the key to the group's appeal isits splendid vocal harmonies, which blend typical salsa soneos with R&Bflavorings. Think of a Latino Boyz II Men powered by salsa's congas and elephantinehorns, and you get the picture. The leadoff single "A Puro Dolor" quicklyclimbed the charts, thanks to its rhythmic fusion and the magnificent vocalacrobatics of boyhood friends Angel, Pedro, and brothers Javi and Georgi.Elsewhere, there are traditional salsa grooves fueled by heavy trombones ("MiCorazón Te Recuerda"), mellow boleros ("Dónde Está TuAmor"), and spirited merengues ("Lo Que Yo No Tengo"). The bilingual cumbia"Muévelo" showcases additional spice as the foursome show off theirability to sing rapid-fire improvised soneos in English and Spanish. --RamiroBurr

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Sound!
This, julieta's 1st album as a solista is so refreshing as is "bueninvento" her 2nd.
She mixes her excellent accordian playing with a broad rock style which at times can be almost goth "libertad", and at times, more upbeat "de mis pasos". Her delicate voice adds deep meaning to the music, as there is a sort of sadness found within. I really believe that Ms. Venegas's music will appeal to fans of many generes, as it is so original and catchy and intelligent.
My faves are "antes", "Opurtunidad" and "libertad"

5-0 out of 5 stars One of a kind
I bought this album years ago and have been waiting for her to get the recognition she deserves in the US. The music is brilliant, unique, she sounds amazing and she does it all without hips gyration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Su musica reta cualquier comparacion posible

5-0 out of 5 stars she's what they said she is..greatness!
recently i read a full article about julieta venegas. i had neverheard of her before but the articlehad enough power to propel me tobuy this cd,'aqui.' she seemsto have been inspired in part bytori amos as evidenced by the pianoat the very beginning of the disc.her creativity and musicianshipgive new meaning to the use of theaccordian. who knew?? the songwriting is in the pocket! this girlknows what she's doing. this isan interesting array of musicalstyles. pop, hip-hop, salsa, jazzwith alternative/rock overtones.not everyone will embrace her vocals. i had this disc on at workand my boss moved onto the next cdin the player 2/3 into it cause shehad enough. what she lacks in compelling vocal ability/range, etc...she makes up for in emotional delivery. i have a very sensitive/picky ear when it comes to vocalsand i will pick up nuances thatmany others don't. i cant help iti seem to have been born with this.i want to give kudos to the producer who apparently is THE prodoucer of alternative music inmexico. his work is on par with thebest in the u.s. i am disappointedmany times by the recording qualityon cd's in the u.s. therefore, iwas so happy to be able to blastthis cd and maintain full, vibrantclarity on all levels in my carwhich is where i do most of my music listening. i wait on batedbreath for julieta's next release.hopefully soon. she has got to bedestined for international fame! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLEMENTE UNICO!!!
Wow!

5-0 out of 5 stars Te quiero Chichi!
In 2001 I went to Argentina to visit a friend in Buenos Aires. The last day I was there, I decided to bring home some Latinamerican music as a memory, along a Quilmes beer, a Boca Juniors soccer shirt and equipment for the beloved "Maté"-tea.
I asked my friend what to buy and he recommended this album without giving it a second thought.

3 years later I still enjoy this happy and lively music that can make me happy in any moment. "Amor Narcotico" is one of the greastest tunes I've ever heard, and "Sol de Verano" comes close. When I put on this album, I can immagine myself back in Argentina, enjoying the sun, the great food and...the incredibly beautiful girls :-)

A sure recommend for everybody with a sweet tooth for Latinamerican music

5-0 out of 5 stars Bet you can't sit still!
This album keeps you moving, even if you're not into dancing! I've fallen in love with this music... It peps me up on the way to work and keeps me that way! Absolutely wonderful music... I'll have to buy another of Chichi Peralta's CDs!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Chichi - Up there with Juan Luis Guerra
Wow! What an album, what a singer, what a collection of supreme salsa! I thought no one woiuld ever come close to Juan Luis Guerra as a poet and singer, but Chichi Peralta comes close! His music captures the same joyous feeling that Guerra has perfected. "Amor Narcotico" is simply put, one of the best dance tracks ever, with a percolating rythm and lovely lyrics that are fresh, warm and happy - a perfect combination of love and longing that transcends the genre and makes for tremendous fun. The rest of the album doesn't disappoint. In fact, it extends the singer's passion and irresistable good nature with lyrical dance music that also sends a message. I love this album, and heartily recommend it! A true pleasure!

4-0 out of 5 stars .
I have such a nostalgia for this album its almost painfully pleasant(?) to listen to. So I only listen to this on speacial occasions when I want to feel really lifted up; I'm afraid the effect may wear off. I'm nostalgic beacause when I went to Costa Rica as an exchange student this music was playing everywhere. His ennunciation is memmorably precise, and a number of the songs on this album, especially Amor Narcotico, are truly great, pure pop. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great like always
I have to say this is by far one of my favorite Selena cd's because it has all of her spanish hits. I'm glad they did it is they any more to say. This has to be the first cd in your Selena collection if you are just starting out because it has what she is all about. Then go pick of the live cds because it her hits live and from there you decide.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one
If you have room in your budget for only one Selena CD, this CD is a good one to have.Personally, I prefer "ALL MY HITS, VOL. 1" because it includes the original version of my favorite "No Me Queda Mas" and does not include my least favorite "Techno Cumbia."However, if you really like or think you may really like Selena, then I would disagree that this CD is a good place to start. This is because all of Selena's original albums were so very good. Now that those original albums have been reissued, I would strongly suggest that you eventually add all of them to your collection, and avoid most of these new compilations as they contain very little that is new and are therefore unnecessary. The great thing about Selena's original albums is that nearly every song on them is just as good or better than the ones that keep turning up on these new compilations for the 5th or 6th time.I give this CD 5 stars because the music is so great, but you probably don't need it.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love it, but...
Every year since Dreaming of You in 1995, a new Selena compilation has been released. Sometimes I do think all of these CD's are a bit much, because the selections are almost always the same. Being one of the people who never knew of Selena until after her passing, I would love to hear some of her harder-to-find material (Sus Inicios/the Early Years, volume I compilation from 2000 was nice; but where are the others? Doesn't the "volume I" indicate a series with more to come)?

Ones opens with "No Quiero Saber" from Ven Conmigo.Even though it says 2000 mix next to the song, it sounds just like the original version, which I actually prefer. The CD ends with a beautiful medley featuring "Si Una Vez," "Amor Prohibido (my favorite Selena number)," and "Como La Flor."You'll also find the ballad she did with El Salvadoran singer Alvaro Torres entitled "Buenos Amigos," and the Spanish version of "Dondequiera Que Estes" with the Barrio Boyzz (the bilingual version can be found on Dreaming of You).

Nevertheless, all of these hits are wonderful and Ones is definitely a great starter CD for new fans, but I wouldn't have complained if the songs had at least been altered somehow and given a different flavor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Selena "Ones" is THE introduction to Selena
For real, it is.

Here's why it is: Only one remix, and it rocks. 19 non-remixed songs, only remastered for better sound clarity. All the tracks on this CD, from 1-19, are all on Selena albums recorded while she was still alive - Ven Conmigo, Entre a Mi Mundo, Live, Mis Mejores Canciones, Amor Prohibido. Including "Buenos Amigos," which was NEVER before on a Selena CD. If you wanted it, and you lived in the US, you either had to download it or order Alvaro Torres' album, "Nada Se Compara Contigo," which is an import.

If you've never heard a thing by Selena, and you're curious enough to want to buy a CD of hers, buy THIS one. You will not be disappointed...unless you're looking for rancheras, which are NOT on this CD. Looking for rancheras, then see her CD "Mis Mejores Canciones - 17 Super Exitos." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More please.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this generous double CD, 40-item issue including the best of the 1950's (and much earlier) Spanish popular songs, in performances that largely contributed to actually define the essence of what was 1950's Spanish popular music, right at the time when my childhood was in progress..., you see?
Today, this can only bring good memories of warm times with dear mum, never to be repeated.
The "sound technology" is far better than anyone could ever expect from this vintage and, all in all, I assess it as being 9 out of 10.
One word or two remain to be said: there is enough vintage Churumbeles' material scattered around to fill up at least one additional 2-CD, 40-item, "Lo mejor de lo mejor", RCA digital reissue, with absolutely complete assurances of success.
"More please".
Best regards,

5-0 out of 5 stars Bringing back memories
I have been a Churumbeles de España fan ever since they performed in Panama City, Panama, my country of residence, close to 50 years ago.I did not miss any of their shows and since that time I have been trying to find as comprehensive collection as possible of this group and this is it as it covers all their greatest hits. Although I find the treble to be a bit high, it can easily becompensated by adjusting the control on the amp but that is a minuscule handicap as compared to the great pleasure of listening to these old standards again. RCA has done a great job in this compilation and hope there are more of these in the future with other artists and performers of the 50s decade. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun-filled wonderful musical collection!
When one thinks of mariachis, what comes to mind is the large sombreros, the traditional uniforms, and blaring trumpets. Mariachis perform the most beautiful latin music ever.

Mariachi music doesn't have to be only instrumental, and a treat is to include vocals. Here, the vocals vary with rich deep sound to accentuate the instruments.

A variety of traditional rancheras, polkas, and ballads are included, and some of the classics that are forever associated with mariachi bands.

No mariachi CD is complete without "Guadalajara." And listen to the lone strings on "Cielito Lindo" probably the most popular Mexican song ever. If Lucy Ricardo knew it, everyone then knew it.

Another well-known song is the Mexican hat dance "Jarabe Tapatio". You can't help picture those dancers sashaying in their flared costumes. In the tune "El Mariachi", the background sound of the members exude a sound of reverberation.

Although there are more distinct versions of "La Marcha De Zacatecas" one can always appreciate this uplifting, marching dance song..... MZRIZZ

5-0 out of 5 stars A great buy!
Twenty selections for a low price, but that's not all. There is a trace of an echo in some of these "exitos" that make you feel as though you are there in the public square or ballroom in Old Mexico. The pace of some selections is not as fast and frantic as some (Norte) Americanized versions of mariachi. This traditional mariachi is very satisfying. I am addicted to mariachi and could listen to it indefinitely without growing weary of it. If you're like me, you will enjoy Silvestre Vargas and his band.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best In Show
I like to fansy myself bit of an expert in terms of spanish rock, and for me no one beats Aterciopelados. Their mix of styles into an easy to listen fusion is what music is meant to be, and this El Dorado is in my opinion the best example of it. Although, La Pipa De La Paz and Gozo Poderoso are also excellent, the songs in El Dorado are eclectic and intelligent, without losing site of the fun of rock. From the straight rock of "Florecita Rokera", to the sweetly ironic "Cosas De La Vidad", to the plain fun of "Mujer Gala", this CD is jam packed with some of the best music in any genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars still best one by this great group
Though they've made a few more CDs after this one, and those others are good, this one is still the best, the edgiest, the most eclectic. _Pipa_ really only has a few songs that really get me going ("Cosita Seria" rocks, but it's really the only one on the disc) and _Caribe_ is more consistent than _Pipa_ but still not as heavy, groovy, punky, melodic, folky (yes, all those adjectives apply to the same CD!) as _El Dorado_. I should add that Echeverri's lyrics are now and again a little too politically goofy for me (frankly, in my view, this world could get along just fine without political pronouncement and grandstanding from musicians, but it's a vain hope that we might get all of them to just worry about their music and shut up about things they don't know much about), but the music is ALWAYS cool and her voice rules.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yo recomiendo el CD Doble

If you want to enjoy Ana belen & Victor Manuel greatest hits live, MUCHO MAS QUE DOS is definately the best album !. The imported is a 2 CD album and if this one is good the imported is outstanding ! Just listen to believe!

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best Spanish live album of all time.
When I first listened to this album in 1994, I was speechless. Never will you find a better collection of Spanish "Canta-autores". Victor Manuel, Ana Belen, Miguel Rios, Joan Manuel Serrat, and the rest are a huge part of Spain's "protest" generation, and thus the lyrics are so rich you can almost touch them. A must have! Wonderfully recorded. I specially recommend "Solo pienso en ti" and "España camisa blanca de mi esperanza".

5-0 out of 5 stars if you have soul and brains you like this
every song in this cd is special. Victor Manuel and Ana Belen made the special mix with his friend and made a master piece.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very special mix of different styles of Spanish musicians

5-0 out of 5 stars El maestro triunfa nuevamente!

5-0 out of 5 stars Un clasico definitivamente

5-0 out of 5 stars Impresionante

There's an alternately ethereal and electric power pulsing through Gozo Poderoso, the stellar fifth album from Colombian duo Aterciopelados. Maybe that's because the team of vocalist-guitarist Andrea Echeverri and bassist Hector Buitrago have rooted their sound in traditional rhythms while deftly dipping it in some of today's most exciting genres. Each track on the album flows effortlessly into the next, but there's nary a hint of repetition. It's all tied together by intricate production and a spiritual intelligence that flows through many of the song lyrics. "Luz Azul," "Esmeralda," and "El Album" (the first single) are stand-outs, anchored by Echeverri's slyly seductive vocals. Cumbia, salsa, and vallenato intermingle with alt-rock riffs, electronica flourishes, and bossa nova rhythms. It's an intoxicating mix that's impossible to classify--and resist. --Joey Guerra ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible Rock album that you can groove to!
I found this album by mistake but have not regretted it since. The name Aterciopelados kept coming up over and over and boy and I glad that it did. I never thought i would actually buy this album but I can't imagine not having it.
Just one listen to the first track Luz Azul will have you humming it forever. Every song seems to blend right into the next while at the same time offering a completely new experience.
Whether you speak Spanish or not, You will definitely find yourself singing along.
Also the beat is not just Rock, it slows down on some songs to create a sound that no one else has now.
The songs are so unique that you never have that deja vu feeling.
And if the songs themselves don't do it for you, the album art and booklet surely will. I've never seen a more beautifully designed album case.
Now i'm just waiting to see them perform live.
Enjoy it, I know you will!

5-0 out of 5 stars Velvety Smooth Latin Grooves
This Colombian band's name translates as "The Velvety Ones" and that description certainly applies to their songs as well. I would recommend this album to anyone who is interested in the best non-Western music and rule-breaking new sounds. This album is a melting pot of many different styles, with even some Western influence, that the band deftly melts down into an intriguing new gumbo. On vocals, Andrea Echeverri has a very interesting voice, quite sly and sultry, and she has little trouble getting her point across and adding a key ingredient to the songs, even for us non-Espanol speakers. For the most ear-catching sounds here, "Luz Azul" sounds like an offbeat type of South American lounge lizard music, "Gozo Perderoso" could be compared to the current Latin pop that is so in vogue but is much more complicated, "Chamanica" is built around a throbbing funk groove, and "Fantasia" includes some splashes of grungy rock guitar. But underneath the genre hopping and exploration, you'll find the most velvety and intriguing Latin grooves around.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very mellow sound that becomes powerful
Eventhough this album displays an ample array of influences throughout, from electronica to caribean, it manages to be cohesive, as a constant stream of grooves permeates the rythmic arranges in each of the songs. Eventually, one realizes that the apparent mellowness of the individual songs evolve into a powerful entrancing sound, as the album's title suggests.

Aterciopelados has a genuinely original sound, which draws from everywhere, and yet resembles nothing one has heard before.

5-0 out of 5 stars an evolving wonderful style
Having been a fan of Aterciopelados for almost a decade I find it incredible how they keep evolving their wonderful sound (hear the new updated version of Florecita Rockera on Evolution). This album definitely shows their increasing interest in electronica that gives it a smooth trippy sound that goes wonderfully with Andrea's deep and emotive voice. But, while one reviewer calls this the best in non-western music (umm, what hemisphere is Latin America supposed to be in?), let me clarify...this is some of the best of ignored, non-English language western music that shows the influence of both regional (Colombian) and more universal sounds in rock, electronica and pop. A keeper to enjoy over and over - whatever your native language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Beauty

It's bizarre at first to hear Mexican diva Thalia's biggest pop hits adorned with blaring horns and oompah beats, but she ultimately pulls it off on Banda Thalia Grandes Exitos. Thalia has enlisted a solid lineup of musicians and producers for the project, but this is hardly banda music in its purest form. Cumbia and pop rhythms regularly find their way into many of the tracks. The slick collection revisits--and reimagines--Thalia's most successful singles since joining EMI Latin in 1995, making for an uneven but interesting project. Tracks such as the already festive "Amor a la Mexicana" and "Por Amor" work well within the traditional banda setting, while ballads "Quiero Hacerte el Amor" and "Entre el Mar y una Estrella" drag a bit and are best showcased in their original arrangements. "Arrasando," the title track off Thalia's stellar 2000 album, is sapped of its energy, but the inclusion of traditional gems "Cuco Pena" and "La Revancha" is a genuine treat. Through it all, Thalia remains an authoritative--and irresistible--presence. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Her best yet!
I have to say that this is one of Thalia's best albums yet.
It was very creative of her to do her greatest hits in the genre of Banda. To take that risk as a pop artist and to pull it off for the most part is something that Thalia must be applauded for.
I also agree with that other reviewer who said that maybe it would've been better for her to have done an actual album of musica banda with NEW songs instead of re-doing her old ones.
She showed a lot of potential of being able to pull that off on the only 2 new songs on the album called cuco pena and la revancha.

All in all, a worthwhile best of CD to check out where Thalia shows she's got potential to evolve from her poppy sounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Alternative Album
I think it is a matter of taste whether you're going to like this CD or not. If you are a Thalia fan, a latin dancer, a Mexican or a lover of banda music, don't hesitate a second! In case you can't do without the loud beats of discotheque and modern orchestrations, this album doesn't do for you. If you are somewhere in between, think if modern songs orchestrated in a more traditional but festive way could be an alternative choice among your CDs and a way to let off steam and unwind. Personally, I love it! It was a surprise Thalia preferred to make a BEST OF collection by rerecording her greatest hits in another music style. This means "Thalia con banda" is a carefully done production through which Thalia had a chance to reinvent her songs and (why not) herself as a singer! Many of the songs remain catchy: "Amor A La Mexicana", "Piel Morena", "Rosalinda", "Por Amor", "Maria La Del Barrio", by far the best among really beautiful songs!! Couldn't they be beautiful? We are talking about a "greatest hits" album!! In a nutshell, this is an ALTERNATIVE album, the choice is up to you!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not normal greates hits, It's something Special...
Thalia made great work with this album. She changed her hits into something new! Hip-hopish ARRASANDO, Dance AMOR A"LA MEXICANA, or Ballad QUIERO HACERTE EL AMOR are now hmm... SO DIFFERENT!!! This is a compilation of Thalia's Greates Hits in Banda. To truly appreciate what banda is though you wnat to venture on to the tracks called "La Revancha" and "Cuco Pena" those new songs for this cd is waht banda rally sounds like. Tejano star Selena's death hasn't stopped label executives from releasing material or fans from snapping it up. According to the EMI Latin label, 1996's Siempre Selena features the last of her previously unreleased songs, "Siempre Hace Frio." The lavish, three-disc Anthology, however, is a must-have for its glimpses of Selena honing her vocal skills and sharpening her talent. Divided under the headers "Pop/English," "Mariachi," and "Cumbia," the set showcases hard-to-find early material and hits, including a club remix of the Diane Warren-penned "I'm Getting Used to You" and a disco-flavored take on "La Bamba." The liner notes offer background information on every song, and these discs also underscore the talents of Selena's brother, A.B. Quintanilla III. He gives many of the older tracks ("Dame Tu Amo," "Salta la Ranita") fresh arrangements that match the energy of Selena's more recent material. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anthology is a complete retrospective to cherish.
As those of you in Digital America have noticed, I am a devoted Selena fan. Anthology is categorized into three groups: Pop, Mariachi, and Cumbia. Each disc is a different window into Selena's far-reaching talent. She could just as easily belt out a love song in Spanish as she could a deep dance groove in English. The best way to experience this collection is to play each disc back to back. No two tracks are the same, yet her voice remains constant from one range to another. No female artist now or in the past, except maybe Patsy Cline, could hit a blues note so carefully and completely that you don't know you've been hit until you are under her spell.

When I bought this album in 1998, I was fairly unfamiliar with Selena's music, especially her earlier tunes. For any fan looking to dig back into the past, this collection is perfect. It is a true testament to Selena's versatility, and the genuis behind her producing brother A.B Quantinilla III.

The first disc that owns the heading "Pop/English" is full of just that, lilting ballads, thundering dance beats aned expert writing. Almost every track is dancable, including the geniusly remixed "Disco Medley" that focuses on the best-sung disco covers from Selena's original live perfomance. Along with a giddy cover of La Bamba and a firey rendition of "Getting Used To You", there are surprisingly rare English pop songs that are again a testamant to what Selena could have become in the English Market.

Under the "Mariachi" bill, the second disk is less impressive, but still emotional. The song "Dame Tu Amor" is one of the best in the anthology, and it's remixed version is far better than it's orignal conception. Unlike the first disk, the mariachi disk focuses mainly on Selena's early recordings, where talent is very evident, but not quite developed. While Selena's vocals are never flat, they are less interesting.

The Cumbia disk (the third disk) is a mix of giddy dance beats and remixed pop ballads that come to life. This seems to be the only disk in the collection that lives up to just what an "Anthology" means---the best of the best. With the dancable "La Llamada", the great vocal performance on "No Debes Jugar" and a little "Corazoncito" thrown in, it hits the jackpot.

Over all, the "Selena Anthology" is a collection of remastered, older material with a song for every taste. But unfortunately, it doesn't always live up to its name. If this is supposed to be the best of Selena, then where is "Como la Flor?" Where is "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" on the cumbia disk? And where, for god's sake, is "Dreaming of you" and "I Could Fall in Love" on the pop disk? It just doesn't make any sense. While this is certainly a must-have for Selena fans, and proves to be a great collection of great music, don't bill it as an "Anthology" if you don't truly have the best of the best.
Otherwise, kudos to the Quantinillas.

what with all the hype and fuss, praise and criticism surrounding this anthology, i really don't see how you can find fault: this album, though not definitively, because inevitably songs had to be omitted, is still nevertheless, the life of Selena: besides, if you feel this collection isn't authentic or definitive enough, there are plenty of her other songs available in numerous compilations, and in their original, un-remixed form. i think this album purposely omits some of the more obvious hits because they are already quite known and available on nearly every album of hers in some form or another. i think with anthology, her family wanted to create an unusual bouquet, one that would come as a surprise, albeit a welcome one, to fans, and possess a unique fragrance this album does. i am so glad the Quintanilla's have made this, even if many claim that everyone's just "jumping on the bandwagon" to make yet MORE money off of Selena's death- how cliché! if your daughter, who possessed an infinite ocean of talent exuding magnetism, radiance, unfathomable depth, and earth-shaking soul and passion, and brought joy to so many people, had her life taken away, you'd want to keep her memory alive, too. if not for yourself, than certainly for the fans, and what better way to do that than through re-creating and re-producing her music?? i personally, as one of many millions of her fans, cannot complain, i can only be comforted by the fact that a new compilation is released in her name each year, because in a strange sort of way, it does have a comforting effect on you, almost as if she is still alive, because selena was one of those rare people who radiated every bit of her energy, which translated through her voice to the audience, whether in recording or in live performance- she was that incredible. so to have a new piece of her musical legacy, is like keeping her flame burning- and no matter what the occasion, any album of hers is a joy to hear. with this particular reincarnation, "anthology", it helps the listener catch a rare glimpse of the singer in her early years as well as her most recent ones- yes some of her classics take on new and different forms, but it's still the same selena, spirit and all, and every song is like a rose petal. at first, the succession of songs from each disc to the next took some getting used to, because everything is so strikingly different as evidence for the immense versatility which she possessed, but then i came to realize that each piece, whatever the color, whatever the emotion it painted for you, turned out to create a beautiful rainbow- a soundscape for all the colors of her life, past and present, and then this album seemed to become a seamless masterpiece embodying the bright star that Selena was and still continues to be, for even in death, she is alive.

This has to be the coolest collection of Selena songs yet to date. Why because this has some rare Selena songs and ones that we all love and know and I think that is pretty cool. 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply great music
Raul di Blasio's 1997 album Solo is incredible. This album ranges from slow pieces, like the beautiful, "Tiempo de Primavera", to the dance-flavored "Boheme". Di Blasio is a great pianist, and the arrangement on these songs only brings his talent out further. This is music you can relax to, or simply have on in the background.

The only thing I have against this otherwise excellent CD are the cheesy liner notes. Oh well. They are good for a laugh. ;-)

5-0 out of 5 stars LOOKING FOR A CURE.... RAUL DI BLASIO!!!!!
I just cant explain what Di blasio has done with me...!!!
His track ' SOLO' , for me is the best ever composed music!!!
With all the artists that I know, really Di blaio is the best ! I am of the type that can almost never drop a tear, even at the death of one of my most loved relatives, I couldnt cry though the great pain... only 'Solo' made my tears flow. It is that music that brings you closer to GOD, and in way, when mixed with prayer, its the only thing to be wanted...!!! His music in general goes to your deepest deeps, and in a way makes you feel that everything is beautiful... wonderful. His music at first made me seek for something that is greater than everything, which I found and this is God!!!! The beauty of Our Creator, and most importantly His great Love, are the things that unconsiously you are drived to think of and live when listening to his music. I made it a bit long, but its just that I am so thankful to God, to have made me hear such a beauty!!! I have all his records, but most beautiful of all is 'SOLO', specially the track 'SOLO'.!!!!!!

It was possible I would need surgery on my neck for the pain of a compressed nerve. Listening to Raul Di Blasio's music has helped me relax to the point of being pain free. His music takes me out of myself and the world we live in. I take flight to a place of beauty, love and peace.I have almost all his albums and plan to have a complete collection very soon.

Raul DiBlasio's talent is endless. This CD shows his range of talent--I especially love "Luna De Paris". Unlike many better known talents, all the music on ALL of his CDs is great. I own 8 of his CDs--and they are all great. One cannot err by purchasing his entire collection. I too cannot believe that he is not known in the United States!! I have been blessed to have had the opportunity to attend 3 of his live performances--his shows were WONDERFUL! His personality is as great as his music. He's very humble. GREAT GUY!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely breath taking, entralling!!
I am actually transported when I listen to any of my Di Blasio CDs, especially SOLO. It is a piece of music that touches my soul. I give Di Blasio music as gifts, and the recipients ALWAYS call me to ask where I got it and are there more CDs by him. His latest, DESDE MEXICO, is incredible. I just wish he would do concerts in the East Coast, and had a fan club. I give all Di Blasio music 5 stars. ... Read more
