Imagine a mix of The Toasters, Joe Ely, Khaled, Les Negresses Vertes, and Tito Puente and you might get a vague notion about this Argentine pop band. Lots of horns, loud electric guitars, fat funky bass, and a varied Latin and rock percussion sound give the record lots of spice. They also offer some star power on this record: Mick Jones of the Clash tosses off a few lines.Big Youth toasts.Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz produce.Debbie Harry is lost in the mix on a strange take of "Strawberry Fields Forever."It's the beauty of the beast that nothing makes particular sense in this strange brew of cultures and clashes.--Louis Gibson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars OFF THE HOOK!!!!!
This album is one of my favorites from LFC(nothing compares to VASOS VACIOS The best one!!!)Flavio's music goes far beyond what you could imagine about latin ska or whatever you wanna call it. This album is a CLASSIC!!! If you want to hear really good stuff from Argentina, what are you doing seating overthere surfing the web. BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars world stew
Rey Azucar is a great album cause people get crazy on the floor when they listen to "Mal Bicho". Sometimes mixes of different music sound a bit artificial but the cadillacs, as a latin band, have the perfect ability to mix raggamuffin, reggae and salsa. Viva los Cadillacs !

4-0 out of 5 stars Social Concience
In their lyrics Los Fabulosos Cadillacs cover a great deal of social taboos, ranging from AIDS to racism, but do so in a haunting, intelligent, if not responsible manner. The ARgentine band is not a foolish loudmouth seeker of limelight. "Mal Bicho" sets things going on the dance floor with the LFC's characteristic blend of hot mambo, ska, and rock. Other party tracks include the wonderfully nutty "Raggapunkypartyrebelde". Other highlits include a cool duet with Debbie Harry "Strwaberry Field's Forver (John Lennon)", and so many other memorable songs. Get into the rebelious spirit!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Argentine rock album!
This album is really peppy - it's one of those CDs that will wake you up and get you revved up to greet the day! Los Fabulosos Cadillacs continue their original Argentine rock style in this excellent album. This is not airy pop, it's energetic, unique rock. "Mal Bicho" is their best-known song on this album, and it will not disappoint, especially if you like "Matador." ... Read more

As one might expect from former members of Giant Sand and Friends of Dean Martinez, this one is another sun-dried tomato. With vocals murmuring just below hearing level and guitars pushing and shoving between a lonesome, distant twang and a sleepy strum as on "Sanchez," the music feels like a soundtrack from a hippie western where the hero survives banishment in the desert by eating peyote buttons. Like the Dean Martinez hombres, Calexico draws upon a choice array of exotic instrumentation (accordion, mandolin, violin, vibes), but the heart of the record is closer to a low-key Meat Puppets hootenanny, the primary combination of guitar and snare drum providing the colors as well as the frame on gentle beauties like "Glimpse" and "Spokes." A well-placed occasional rocker, like the surf-fired "Scout" or the bar mitzvah delight "Mazurka," shake things up nicely, but for the most part, you won't stray too far from the futon. Then again, why should you? --John Chandler ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars different...but the same.
This is not the lush cinematic Calexico of the other albums, This is much more folksier and gritty, and for that it stands alone in its sound. The framework is there for what would come later but there is no pedal steel or horns. All in all it is great, and Id also suggest Commited soundtrack or the Road Map cd from the bands website for a similar sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars desert cool
I have all of Calexico's full-length CDs and they're all excellent. Hard to nominate a single CD as their best, but if I were forced to, Spoke would be it.

How do these guys do it? How do they assemble such magic from such simple parts?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for driving through the desert at night
This IS Calexico's first album, Philip W. Black Light (their 2nd release) is a great album, but I prefer the lo-fi charm of the more soft-spoken tunes that make 'Spoke' Calexico's best album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strangely addictive
I have to agree with all of these reviewers, save for the one who didn't like this release. This is a beautiful concoction of thoughtful-western-meets-tearful-traditional-Mexican beauties, worth listening to repeatedly. It doesn't jump out at you, but lures you in gently like a curious whisper. Everyone I played this CD for loved it and promptly went out to buy it. I suggest you do the same.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre compared to 1st
After loving "Black Light" and finding that almost everyone I played it for felt the same, I was disappointed in "Spoke." It comes across more as a thrown together release of material the guys hadn't finished working on than the evocative, cool step beyond that it is perhaps intended to be. You can easily find other music in this genre that surpasses this cd, but it's still worthwhile if you're a dedicated Calexico fan. ... Read more

As Latino superstar Enrique Iglesias moves closer to the U.S. mainstream--or pulls it toward him--Fonovisa Records compiles 10 tracks for this greatest-hits disc. Lush power ballads carry the day here; "Tu Vacio" suggests that Meat Loaf is as much an influence on Enrique as dad Julio. Pop radio and club dance floors aren't ignored, though, as the title track and the house mix "Esperanza" make clear. Bailamos will likely stand as a landmark in a career that appears unstoppable. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Bailamos" Is One Of My Most Fav Latain Songs Ever!
At first (when I heard this song, "Bailamos", on the radio) I didn't know how to spell it 'cause it was in Spanish. I also didn't know how to spell Enrique Iglesias's name but after I looked up Ricky Martain's CD and looked on the place where they say that customers who bought Ricky's CD also bought, well I found Enrique Iglesias's name and I thought that it sounded kinda like the guy on the radio and so I clicked on it and there it was! Anyway, this song "Bailamos" is da bomb! If you love Latain artists like Ricky Martain and Jennifer Lopez, then you'll love Enrique Iglesias! So, I'd defininetly buy this CD if I were you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Expressive, Close And Personal ... This Man Can Sing
To Midwest ... what album were you listening to? In Bailamos, Enrique is even WHISPERING ... which is a really nice touch and effect that adds to the meaning of the song which is being sung to his lover. In my estimation, 9 out of 10 cuts on this album are No# 1 songs. This kid is not only a very talented person ... he is also a decent man ... quality material ... his parents should be extremely proud of him ... at last a "hero" worthy of emulation by our young people. Bailamos is my third Enrique album but it won't be my last. I can also recommend his REMIXES and COSAS DEL AMOR albums. With Gloria, Ricky, Jennifer and Enrique ... I suspect we all will be enjoying more and more SALSA with everything. Buy it now!

enrique is my favorite . singer the moment i heard bialamos he has been my favorite singer.i even like all the songs of his album named 'escape'.but it is really tough to describe his latest album'seven coz he's got that extra something in his smooth voice that clearly stands out.all the songs are a treat to ear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Pop, Ballads and Dance.
This CD has a little for everyone! A great mix of pop songs, ballads and a couple of dance tracks. Though like most Spanish singers, his stuff sounds better in Spanish than in English, all the tracks are a delight! I think "Bailamos" is one of the best Spanish radio hits ever - a great blend of Spanish flavor that translates well into English. "Falta Tanto Amor" is a beautiful Spanish ballad and I luv the trendy dance track "Nunca Te Olvidare." The only regret is that there are only 10 tracks on the CD! But this one is well worth the cost! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing voice!
I discovered Maria Dolores Pradera quite by accident. She's fantastic. I like making my own compilations, with my favourite songs, butwhen I tried to chose some from this disc, it was not very easy. In the end I chose 8 songs, but I love all of them. The music is romantic, the guitar is played beautifully, the rhythms, either soft and sensual ora bit more lively, pull at your heartstrings. And the voice...Oh, this voice...Like warm honey or melting chocolate, like a lover singing her love, a woman crying with passion.
A great CD in all respects. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maria Dolores Pradera must have a time machine, with which
she can visit the great South American cities of one hundred years ago. Those coastal cultures, which now exist only in some forgotten period architecture, come to life here in her music. She is truly a genius atinterpreting the music of this time and place. No one does it better. Iwish I could travel with her back to the Lima or Santiago of 1900.Fortunately, these cultures live again thanks to her. You can hear the warmsummer nights of these places, and the eternal struggle between men andwomen. My favorites are songs like Fina Estampa, about a gentleman walkingdown the street, or De Carne y Hueso, about a woman who simply cannotunderstand her (ex?)novio. Atahualpa Yupanqui wrote the poignant Tu QuePuedes Vuelvete, and Pradera interprets his song about a wanderer and ariver, brilliantly. Some collections are made up of mostly ho-hum music, with a few selections that stand out. This CD is wonderful listening frombeginning to end. I'm sad because I know that few will ever hear thismusic. But at least this musical treasure exists, and I got my copy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent example of Latin Music in the 60's.
If you want to get a CD with the best Latin American music from the 1960's, this is the one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Can't Beat The Price, Pt. 2
I saw this box set advertised here at the same time I bought Vol. 1, so decided to jump in and get the whole set at once. Like its sister, 100 Boleros De Amor Vol. 2 is filled with lots of wonderful songs, some familiar and some not, which are performed by a huge variety of artists, some familiar and some not. Some of the artists whose recordings are featured here are also to be found on Vol 1, however Vol 2 features several who were not on the first, most notably Agustin Lara. Some Lara compositions performed by others are also presented here. Three stars does not mean the set is not good, it means there is nothing outstanding on it. Some of the recordings are so cheesy I laughed out loud when I heard them, but even so, they should be listened to in the spirit of the times in which they were originally recorded. This is old stuff and the instruments and recording techniques are just not what they are today. Despite my moments of mirth, if you enjoy bolero as much as I, then you should own this as there are 100 songs to choose from and once again, you can't beat the price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Can't Beat The Price!
Being a long-time fan of boleros, I couldn't pass this up when I was perusing box sets of Latin music on this site. I was already familiar with many of the songs, though not being from Mexico and only 45, was not familiar with many of the artists, not even the token gringo. Los Panchos have been a favorite since I could walk, and there are some Panchos hits in the box, but here was a great opportunity to hear some of the same songs I know and love performed by various artists. Don't take the three stars to mean I don't like the set, I do. It just means there is nothing here in the realm of musical greatness. There are a several artists presented besides Los Panchos I like very much, such as Los Tres Reyes and Daniel Santos. But some of the recordings are so cheesy that I was amused in addition to being entertained. I like the format of the set where the better-known or more prolific artists are allotted one song on each CD, while those lesser-known or who were one-hit-wonders are given a slot toward the end of one of the CDs. If you are a real bolero fan, you will find much to like here. So what if a few songs don't measure up? With 100 songs presented, you can't go wrong and you sure can't beat the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars 100 BOLEROS DE AMOR- VOLUME 2 (BOX SET)
In this sequel to the first box set, "100 Boleros de Amor",Vol.2 also features a long list of latino music giants, recorded by Mexico's legendary "Orfeon" label in what can be called as "the biggest bolero compilation ever put together and re-issued. Manolo Munoz, Bola de Nieve, Alberto Vazquez, Sonia Von Kebler "La Unica", Lucho Gatica, Los 4 Hermanos Silva, Celio Gonzalez, Los Dandys, Maria Victoria, Olga Guillot,Los Tres Diamantes, Los Galantes, Ton~a La Negra, Los Tres Ases, (Exitos)De Los Panchos, etc. are all in this mega-compilation, singing superb all time romantic music in its preferred form, the immortal "BOLERO". Just like Volume 1, this is a must buy for all bolero and latin music fans!

5-0 out of 5 stars 100 BOLEROS DE AMOR- VOLUME-1 (BOX SET)
This box set by Mexico's legendary "ORFEON" label is a gargantuan compilation of 100 BOLEROS, sung by all time giants of latin american music. Olga Guillot, Lucho Gatica, Los Tres Diamantes, Daniel Santos, Julio Jaramillo, Olimpo Cardenas, Andy Russell, Lupita D'Alessio, Trio Matamoros, Los Guaracheros de Oriente, Bienvenido Granda, Pedro Infante, Fernando Fernandez, Ton~a La Negra, Chabela Vargas, Los Tres Reyes, (Exitos)De Los Panchos, Los Tres Ases, Maria Luisa Landin, Jose Mojica, Yeyo Estrada and others are all there on the four CD's in this unique set. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cd
I bought this cd from Ricard Arjona like 3 years ago and I like every single song. He did a concert in 98 or 99 and decided to record a live cd like La Ley. This was my first cd from Ricardo Arjona and its not A dissapointment. Great cd. Every song is wonderful! Have A great year! Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was very helpful so you can make a choice to bye the cd or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Storyteller from South America
I've always enjoyed a songwriter who can tell a story, refer to Harry Chapin, for example. Arjona can do it and send the message home smoothly. He is deep and palatable. Not a native spanish speaker, my husband is Colombian, I can now speak and understand the language quite fluently. There is much beauty in the music being written and/or performed in South America today. Kudos to the people of the United States who are bringing us this music (understandably making a good penny on it) and an especially warm thank you to Ricardo Arjona and the other musicians who continue to reach many people in their merging of many cultures.

1-0 out of 5 stars Infamia publica

5-0 out of 5 stars One of life's many lessons...
I am a norweigan girl born in the United States. Until recently english was the only language I knew. For the past year I have been working in a restaurant where English is not the only language spoken. Most people I worked with would get frustrated because they could not understand Spanish and therefore could not communicate their requests. I analysed the situation and found these results agrivating and almost sad...why was the line so thickly drawn? So, I decided that I would try my best with what little Spanish I knew with hope for understanding. I arrived at my normal hour and instead of saying hello...I said "Hola', como estas? Me llamo Caitlyn, y tu'?" and instead of a remark on my accent or choice of words...they were incredibly warm and impressed that I had been so bold. We became well aquainted, I taught them English and they taught me Spanish. I fell so in love with the language, work was a field trip. One of my friends introduced me to Ricardo Arjona. I borrowed the cd and played it over and over and over trying to learn all the words and then trying to understand them. I made a tape and took it back to work. When they played it I sang all the words and even though half the time I had no idea what I was saying I could still feel the passion in every word he spoke. Thankyou for showing me how big this world is Ricardo. I hope someday I can see you en vivo!

5-0 out of 5 stars He make the guatemalans very proud !

5-0 out of 5 stars From those who Spanish is our first language...
It is clear to me that what Sting wanted to do, translating some of the songs of "Nothing but the Sun" (just 5 to be precise, and Fragile is translated in both Spanish and Portuguese), was to give an opportunity, to those who don't speak English, to experience what the album is all about. The translations are as literal as possible, which could be a good or bad thing. Good for the people who, for example, have NBTS and love the melodies, but don't understand bologna of what he's saying. Bad for people like me, who know the language (sort of...) and wanted something new. Either way, I have to admit that S. really obtained exactly what he wanted from the album (from what I see). And last but not least, who is this guy who wrote that "Danzar" doesn't exist in Spanish? I just wanted to give him an advice:
Don't talk about things you don't know about!!! Thanx

4-0 out of 5 stars OK, his Spanish isn't perfect, but the album's still great
I bought this years ago on cassette and more or less wore it out. To this day, I enjoy the Spanish version of "Fragile" more than his English version.

I agree with some others that Sting's delivery in Spanish leaves something to be desired. But it ain't all THAT bad, particularly for someone who's not a native speaker. The purists will always be irritated by it. But I happen to enjoy listening to Sting sing in Spanish because I can understand the lyrics better. He annunciates each word more so than a native Spanish speaker would.

Melodically, some of the songs sound like they were made to be sung in Spanish. Listening to "Fragil/Fragilidad," with its delicate guitar, I can almost imagine the Spanish countryside. And it goes without saying that "Ellas Danzan Solas (Cuecas Solas)" is awesome in the language of the people about whom Sting is singing. Also, having lived in Chile for two years myself, this song is particularly moving; even though the dictatorship is long over, its residual effects are still ever-present.

I just wish Sting had left off "Si Estamos Juntos" ("We'll Be Together") -- it sounds misplaced among the other songs. I would've much preferred "History Will Teach Us Nothing" or even "Be Still My Beating Heart."

P.S. Contrary to what another reviewer said, "danzar" IS a word in Spanish, a synonym for "bailar". I suspect this word was used as it probably sounds better lyrically than "bailar" does, even if it is less commonly used.

5-0 out of 5 stars Danzar is a word
To "a music fan from virginia", the word "danzar" is a spanish word that can be found in any spanish diccionary. Danzar means "to dance", and a fine dancer would be "Danzador/Danzadora".
Bailar also means Dance, but in a more informal way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching
Four Spanish versions and one Portuguese Version of songs of the album „... Nothing Like The Sun". The translation seems to be worked out well. The songs are personal, sensitive and touching. The voice of Sting is not only in English unique.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sting Should Hire a Better Translator
The songs on the Nada Como el Sol album are basically the songs on his Nothing Like the Sun Album, but done in Spanish and Portuguese. Poorly. His pronunciation is off in places, and entire phrases are translated incorrectly. In fact, the Spanish word for the verb "to dance" is bailar. Not danzar. The word danzar doesn't even exist in Spanish, and yet he uses it over and over again, even as the title of a song. Sting is an excellent performer, in English. Buy the English version. ... Ruben Blades puts in a dynamic performance, recorded in New York, that shows why he is known foremost as a singer rather than a film star or politician. The native Panamanian has a distinctive take on Salsa, combining an innate jazz sensibility along with Salsa's inherent dance grooves. His band Son del Solar is one of the best in the business, following Blade's warm and personal vocals through every move with some great solos and arrangements. Several of his successes are featured, such as "Pedro Navaja" and "Todos Vuelven," and "Muevete" gets a scintillating 12-minute workout. With a little Caribbean influence in the mix, Live delivers a smooth punch with a velvet glove that will definitely rock you. --Derek Rath ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extrodinary compilation of the literary and emotional ruben
Ruben Blades, the Panamanian singer/songwriter, has always sang about poverty and the struggle of the common man. The album "Live" is a collection of songs that follow this trend performed by Ruben in the early part of the eighties and seventies. Some of the high points of this album are "La Cancion Del Final Mundo" about the nuclear threat and "Muevete" a song that speaks out against racism and invokes Hispanic pride. The album includes riveting solos by many of the musician from Ruben's band Seis Del Solar. Eddie Montalvo, the LP endorsing conga player, gives one of these electrifying performances. I recommend this album to those who have a narrow-minded view of traditional salsa and I want to thank Amazon for the chance to express my thoughts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The poet of salsa
One of the greates live albums ever. Note: Ruben Blades is from Panama not Nicaragua

5-0 out of 5 stars Ruben Blades and Son de Solar Live!
Ruben Blades and Son de Solar's Live! is a refulgent live album. I have the tape version containing an extra track on it-Patria. Son de Solar sounded remarkably well. It is not surprising since Son de Solar is one of the best concomitant bands Blades can have: Marc Quiñones and Izbarra-I misspelled his name but nevertheless one of the best timbaleros in Latin jazz-taking care of the rhythm section.

Live! segues through most of Blades' Elektra -post- FANIA days repertoire starting with Decisiones and with the denouement of laudatory live renditions of Patria- cassette version only- and Muevete. The latter is a Los Van Van song showing Blades' openness to the seemingly modern and 'electric' Cuban rumba. Blades' sonero voice is timeless as usual. The downside is that Live! seems to come up short and that might be explained because it is missing FANIA classics- except for Pedro Navaja. Notwithstanding, even without the FANIA classics, this album is filled with worth post-FANIA exemplars.

5-0 out of 5 stars El poder de la letra

5-0 out of 5 stars Un CD obligado......

If you like Enya and Sheila Chruch vocalists and music type, you will absolutely not be disappointed with this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Original!
Excellent group. This album highlights their catchy pukish rock style mixed with tropical music. This album is great all the way through. The lyrics are inventive as well. They incorporate many styles, and they all rock.
My faves are " el desinflar de tu cariño", "humo y alquitrán" and the title cut.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of 1999's Best
First of all let me say that I'm a big fan of Andrea Echeverry. She is the lead singer and guitar player for Aterciopelados. Her voice has tremendous range, from husky sultry notes to high notes that linger for eternity. This is Rocanrol at it's best. This band has been nominated several times for a Grammy, it is just a matter of time before they get their due. Innovative, sultry, tropical, jazzy, bluesy, folksy are just a few words to describe Aterciopeldos new sound. The CD is a little different from their previous CD's but this is where they are at now and they have a good view of the future. Based on tradional rootsy Columbian sensibilities this music is high octane jet fuel full of electronic Caribbean beats. It is hard to describe but the CD is a sort of techno inspired Columbian Rocanrol. The charismatic Andrea teases with her seductive voice throughout. It makes no difference what she is singing about, it is her unique voice that is so delightful. The band is tight and compliments her to the max. Standout tunes are numerous, including the bolero-folksy-jazzy-hip-hop tinged El Estuche, the upbeat Cosmos that starts out slow and builds to a crescendo that rocks, to the hipnotic Doctora Corazon to the sambaesque Manana, it is all good. Another reviewer said this is mood music, it is, it puts you in a great mood. Andrea te amo!!

5-0 out of 5 stars fun and fantastic
This is the first review that I've ever submitted, so I guess the very spirited music moved me. I have enjoyed this CD from the first listening. The singer has a wonderful voice. I wish I could understand what she is saying (the lyrics are included, but they're in Spanish).

Definitely, I'll be taking a look at purchasing some of their other albums and might sign up for a language lesson.

5-0 out of 5 stars With Rockers like this, who needs Shakira?
I recently saw this Colombian rock band in Boston promoting their upcoming album Gozo Poderoso. They were fantastic! I had never heard of them before until a cousin of mine, who is a sound engineer for the band (I haven't seen him in years), gave me a call out of the blue saying he would be in town for a day. I went to meet him and stayed for the show. Again, the show was fantastic! This band has everything: talent, showmanship, originality, and chemistry. They have the potential to cross over to the english market and succeed on their merits. In contrast, Shakira, another popular Colombian artist (who openly claims Alanis Morisette as an inspiration) sounds too much like her idol. Los Aterciopelados is a group worth keeping track of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lo Mejor del Rock en Español!
Caribe Atomico is an album you will not get tired of listening to, over and over. It is intoxicating and gets you every time. Aterciopelados break the stereotype against spanish rock. It's got great lyrics and the music in itself is enough! Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Desmadre y fiesta sin parar
I can't count the number of parties and great moments I enjoyed with this album and the people I love. vasos vacios it's simply the best of Fabulosos. You will never be bored of listening this songs because they will always remember you dancing around with your frirnds drinking some wine and beer at the beach. I recomend the duet with latin queen Celia Cruz in "vasos vacios", "gitana", "revolution rock", "V centenario", and my favorites "mi novia se cayo en un pozo ciego" and my anthem "yo no me sentaria en tu mesa".

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Cadillacs CD ever
This album comprises the best of the Cadillacs, especially the Classic songs like Gypsie (Gitano), Matador, and of course, the often forgotten, and never highly enough spoken about, first track. It is an excellent introduction to the whole vibe of Los Cadillacs, and is an excellent beginning to what is, one of, if not the finest album. Even if you don't speak or understand spanish, this is still a MUST HAVE in anyone's CD collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars not the best compilation
I would rated it with 5 if it should brought the original version of mi novia se cayo a un pozo ciego. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs are south america, I grew up with their music and vibe and dancing to them until early morning, just the way we like it in Chile and answering to some ignorant that review this cd before : they were not educated by or in this country!.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Caddies Ever!
If you havent heard MATADOR, you donno what you're missing!
VASOS VACIOS continues the meaningful lyrics and of course there is LEON SANTILLON for all you caddie lovers.

GITANA and TE TIRARE are the rock picks of the album.

EVERY song catches on with you and if you like the Caddies, then this is one album you will LOVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS CD....CADILLACS ARE THE BEST

5-0 out of 5 stars Que puedo decir acerca de este album ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Review
Just wanted to add to the already wonderful reviews. Like another reviewer, I don't speak any Spanish (although my basic Italian gives me a slight clue as to the gist of the songs) - but this is great music. It is beautifully orchestrated, soothing; Luis Miguel has a great voice. The songs are so singable that I am continuously trying to sing along phonetically. I never get tired of this CD, I can play it over and over.

5-0 out of 5 stars LUIS-ROMANCE, ROMANCE, ROMANTIC
Though I speak no Spanish, this album is a must for those who wish to surround themselves with soft, lush romantic music. Laying poolside, sipping Margaritas, soaking up the sun and dreaming of a romantic encounter all are enhanced by this album. Peppered with some lively songs just to keep you from forgetting where you really are!

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Grammy
A bit of pop, some R & B and a little jazz are all complimented by the perfect voice of Luis Miguel culminating into his 2nd Grammy for Best Latin Pop. Inolvidable!

5-0 out of 5 stars An overlooked CD

5-0 out of 5 stars Un álbum de rock que trasciende tiempo y espacio

5-0 out of 5 stars Lleno de Canciones majestuosas, Gran Trabajo Sabina!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Un Cd Completo ?

5-0 out of 5 stars Majestuoso trabajo del Flaco de Ubeda

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best cds of the '90s, bar none
This is the absolute best of world music, and deserves the attention of music fans everywhere. Imagine someone with the voice (and looks) of Michael Bolton and the musical sensibilities of David Hidalgo (of Los Lobos) and Dave Matthews, and you'll have some idea of the appeal of Carlos Vives. Vives' musical project is to make danceable pop music that incorporates all of the various elements of Columbian music - Afro-Caribbean zouk and salsa, the pan-pipes of the Andean Indians, Creole accordion ballads, and, of course, American rhythm and blues - in a synthesis that expresses the melting-pot vitality of his country. He succeeds at that in spades, but the result is completely accessible and enjoyable to anyone in the world who likes pop music and doesn't mind if it comes without irony, agression, or depression. This album alternates layered, syncopated pop songs with simpler, traditional (or traditional-sounding) tunes. Both are uniformly strong - there isn't a weak track on the album. The standout songs include the title track (a gorgeous mid-tempo love song), the first track (at least on my copy, Pa' Mayte, an homage to African influences on Caribbean music that includes a rap about Vives' home soccer team), and Diosa Coronada, one of the traditional tunes. Vives has a first-rate band (multiple percussion, bass, guitars, accordion, and flutes), led by an accordion player, Egidio Cuadrado, who is simply amazing. The lyrics, if you understand them, are not especially deep, but are as stong as any in Latin American music and generally pretty satisfying. I would note that my wife, who doesn't understand a word of Spanish and whose musical tastes generally run to 60s Motown and Shawn Colvin singer-songwriter types plays this disk constantly whenever she feels like a pick-me-up. You can't resist dancing a little.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow.
Amazing! Carlos Vives is the best there is. Very different from most of his other albums, he emphasizes what music really is and how it intervenes with dance. From all of his albums, this one is the one I recommend the most.

5-0 out of 5 stars SHEER PERFECTION!!!!!
I own five CDs of Carlos Vives and this one is absolutely his best. "La Tierra" delivers the raw beauty of vallenato with all the production of rock, alternative, and funk/pop. Consistent in all songs are a strong percussion section and a flaunty accordian. Deviating from traditional vallenato are the various guitar sounds and techniques as well as blues scales put to use in this cumbia based music. Throw in occasional flutes, a very modest use of keyboards and simple back up vocals with Carlos at lead and you have one of the greatest CD's I have ever heard. What separates this CD from his others is that even though all the songs have melodies, he never allows it to get too poppy. What's more amazing is how many different groups people I can listen to this CD with... Simply put, the best of Vives and a must for anyone who loves World music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ahí llego yo...
... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a polished jewel
This is the 1st in the "Romances" series and is a fabulous, lush CD that shouldn't be missed. The arrangements by Bebu Silvetti are incredible...the crisp rhythm sections of "Inolvidable" and "Mucho Corazon", the smoothness of "La Barca" and "Contigo en la Distancia"...and Luis Miguel sings every song magnificently.

Armando Manzanero's "Te Extraño" is sublime. It will make you weep for a lost love or one that has yet to arrive...It's truly one of the most moving, beautiful songs I've ever heard. It reaches that rare level called perfection. "Te extraño/ cuando camino, cuando lloro, cuando rio/ cuando el sol brilla, cuando hace mucho frío/ porque te siento como algo muy mío".

The booklet is minimal. It does contain lyrics (though not order of play) and the total running time is 44:12. This also comes as part of a 3 disc set, "Todos los Romances". Though maybe not as extraordinary as the 3rd in the series, "Romances", which I would place top 10 in any CD collection, it comes pretty close, and if only for "Te Extraño", this one is a must to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first and very best of his "Romance" series.
I first discovered Luis Miguel with his breakthrough 1990 release titled "20 Años" when I visited Mexico while on vacation and I can't believe that I still play that release so frequently so many years later. It's simply pop at its best so shortly thereafter, I decided to give his first stab at Latin American standards a try and all I can say is "WOW." Luis Miguel brought a totally new the passion to timeless masterpieces and managed to make them as if they had been written exclusively for him. His amazing voice is elegantly complemented by the lush instrumentation that quickly made it one of my favorites. Songs like 'No Me Platiques Mas," "Involvidable," La Puerta," "La Barca," "Usted" and many others make this one of many favorite releases and easily earns 5 stars. He subsequently released others in this genre, while all very good, none compare to this amazing collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars HANDS DOWN... THE BEST LATIN ALBUM EVER RECORDED
I'm not the biggest Luis Miguel fan, but I have to admit he is along with Marc Anthony, they are the greatest latin voices of our time.
This is one of those albums that you listen once, and you won't stop listening to it over and over again for months (or perhaps years).
The secret of the success of this album?... a combination of creativity and talent. Behind of Luis Miguel's powerful and soothing voice, there's a team of music masters who are mainly responsible for this fabulous creation.

The very essence of this album is re-creating some of latin music's finest and most beloved bolero classics of all time.
'El Maestro' Armando Manzanero did a great job in terms of production, along with contributing with some of his own classics chosen for this album.
Bebu Silvetti gave and outstanding contribution with the orchestral arrangements for this masterpiece, which capture the very essence of the melodies of these songs and take them to a whole new level.

I have absolutely no doubts about it... THIS IS THE BEST LATIN ALBUM EVER RECORDED, AND I DOUBT THERE WILL EVER BE ANOTHER ONE BETTER.

5-0 out of 5 stars a jewel to make love to......
This album is wonderful! I heard the song, "No Se Tu", on the Speechless movie, and HAD to find it! I don't normally buy Spanish albums, but this? This was one you HAVE to have!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Vale la pena Comprarlo

It is an excellent buy. I strongly recommend it. My friends that do not speak one word of english love their music too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly good!
The harmonius combination of their lyrics and music makes this group one to look out for. I hear that they are in the process of recording their next album....surely it will be a success! Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Conscios of issues through music
Fabulous music! Classic violin is mixed with Latin music. Lyrics are very realistic and honest about issues such as the depletion of wood and the destruction of our forests, and especially immigration. The rest is just plain fun for dancing and listening. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Latin Grammy Awards Nominee
I had the opportunity to listen to these guys playing in a bar in Miami 3 years ago. At the time I couldn't understand how such a talented band would play for free in a small bar. Well, 3 year later they are nominated in the Latin Grammy's "Best New Artist" category. Quite a ride...by the way the CD is great, the hit song "Tabaco y Chanel" is great even if you don't understand a word in Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exelente!
I bought this album when I was in Ecuador last month. This band is extremely popular in South America and I wanted to try it out. I have listened to this CD everyday since I returned to the US and they are an excellent, very tight band with amazing talent. They use a variety of instruments and have a great blend of typical latin american styles and modern popular sounds. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in a great, fun, talented latin band. Of course, it is all in spanish, so it is fun to brush up on spanish for those who are familiar with the language, but it is also an outstanding CD for those who don't understand a word. Both dancable and soothing. They remind me of a band you would see playing in an open mic coffee shop show, except way better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great and Peculiar Production...
Alejandro Fernandez has said many times that he is always looking for "new sounds". We can see this on his musical productions, from "Muy Dentro De Mi Corazon" (mariachi/traditional) to "Me Estoy Enamorando" (boleros) to "Mi Verdad"(mariachi/traditional) to "Entre Tus Brazos" (pop), and finally "Origenes". The CD starts of with the nice sounding single "Tantina Pena" which heavily borrows flamenco sounds and rythms. The very talented poet/composer Fato made excellent contributions with the beautiful "Si Tu No Vuelves" and the inspiring "Duerme Tranquila" which adds that romantic-pop flavor to "Origenes". Beautiful lyrics coupled with rythm is savored with "Amor De Luna" and while a very poetic and sentimental "Come Pez En El Agua" adds a gracious touch to this production. The more traditional Mexican sounds are also found in the contributions made by the talented composer that is Manuel Monterrosas with "Ay Amor", the highly-rythmic and beautifully composed "Donde Vas Tan Sola" and "Tu Regresaras". Another welcomed contribution is by Roberto Cantoral with "Jamas Te Vi Tan Linda", which is truly an inspiring piece.

Overall, this musical production is a gem and quite peculiar. With different sounds and great musical interpretation by Alejandro, it is a definite addition to any music lover.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
Alejandro Fernandez is clearly one of the great romantic singers of his generation and this CD is a fabulous example of the modern fusion of ranchera with flamenco, jazz, and even Native American music. I must have heard "Tantita Pena" over a hundred times and I can't get tired of it. When I first heard it the flamenco guitar strains made me sit up and take notice as much as his voice did. The music video of this is on a DVD called "La Trayectoria" (see my review of that) and it is an amazing production.

"Pajaro Perdido", "Donde vas tan sola?", and "Ay, Amor!" are also musically interesting with beautiful lyrics. Anyone who hasn't investigated Latin music recently should probably start with this CD, which will create a very serious appetite for more. Lyrics included, along with some good photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lo mas suave que nunca!
I fell into purchasing this disc by listening to a Spanish radio station that was giving Tantita Pena a lot of air time. Like most everyone I kinda cringed, hoping I wasn't being suckered into buying another crummy album for one song.
Let me tell you, this entire album is pure dynamite! From the first song to the last (Las Mananitas, hidden on track 30) every track is first rate. The melodies are each unique and the care in production and delivery is patently obvious.
The origen of each song speaks volumes and who better to deliver the message with power and sincerity but Alejandro!
I would highly recommend Origenes, consider it an investment in fine music.

5-0 out of 5 stars heheh
I don't even speak spanish and I like the vocals. Damn these foriegn singers have more skillz than britney spears, N'stink and gaystreet boys.

Where have all great american singers gone to? Stop the bubble gum insanity.

3-0 out of 5 stars Alejandro Fernandez without Pedro Ramirez
You have his old albums? Wondered how he might sound if the songs he records are arranged by other people other than his father's team of writers, producers, and arrangers?
Well, this is what this cd is. One interesting arrenger on this cd , which I think is one of the best in the genre, is Eduardo Maguellanes. His arrangements are very beautiful yet I don't think Alejandro's voice fitted up to the arrangement. Other arrangements are done by Kiko Campos who is more of a pop arranger. Nevertheless, he did a good job in this cd.
THere is also an extra hidden track : Las Mañanitas. I think it is very bad. For some reason it leads me to be believe he tried to secularize the traditional song by taking out parts that include San Pedro and San Juan. If you get bothered by the original version because of that then get this version.
I don't know why this cd is called Origenes because the songs are not anything related to that word. ONe high note and praise is the arrangements in the cd which some are very new to mariachi. THis is not a ranchera cd. It is more like pop-balada ranchera which suits Alejandro Fernandez right.
I have seen him perform when he started with his father and once in Teatro Blanquita. Back then I saw promise but by now , if he cared, he should be at least some kind of tenor. His image does seem to have gotten better. 3 stars because of the beautiful arrangements. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ana and her beautiful angelic voice.......
I had no idea that I was buying such a beautiful album the day I picked up JOYAS DE DOS SIGLOS. Ana will break your heart with her beautiful renditions of classic mariachi, corridos and rancheras on this album. I was used to her more contemporary, poppy sound and didn't know how her voice would make the transition to more traditional pieces. Ms. Gabriel has a voice that is best described as rich. That thick, heartbreaking, "fat" mariachi voice. It tugs at your soul, penetrates your thoughts and draws you into the music whether you are a native Spanish speaker or can only respond to the universal form of expression through song.

Some of my favorite tracks on this album by far are the mariachi love songs. ("Un Viejo Amor," "Hay Unos Ojos") and the corridos as well ("Pobre Bohemio," "Valentin De La Sierra"). Though, I am a South American/Estadounidense, for the whole duration of the album Ana Gabriel made me feel Mexican! Que vive, Ana!

This CD 'Joyas de los dos siglos,' and 'Ayer y Hoy' are her best CD's. They touch my heart and soul like none other of her CD's. If you are a fan of Ana's, and don't have these, you don't know what you are missing. Her interpretations are compelling and haunting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful guitars, beautiful voice, enchanting CD.
Whenever I go on a road trip, this is one of the CD's I must have with me...I'm hoarse by the time I get to my destination. Ana's voice is so beautiful and strong; you feel every word. If you enjoy classical guitar, you will also find an appreciation for many songs on this CD on some level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent rendition of classic ballads
Ana Gabriel's voice is at its best. If you like wistful Spanish guitars, heartwrenching tales, and want to be transported to the Mexico your grandparents knew, you won't be disappointed. ... Read more
