Colombian singer Carlos Vives continues his exploration of the sounds of his homeland on El Amor de Mi Tierra, a lush collection that also includes rumba, cumbia, and Caribbean rhythms anchored by an earthy, folksy flavor. Vives, a former television actor, polishes it with a glowing pop sheen, thanks to solid production from Latin-music mogul Emilio Estefan. The pair work wonderfully together on tracks such as "Tu Amor Eterno," "El Cante," "La Receta," and especially "Fruta Fresca," a desperately romantic moment thathas become Vives's biggest radio hit. Vocally, Vives keeps his delivery suitably grounded, working within the infectious rhythms of the music instead of fighting against it or struggling to remain on top. It makes for a consistently engaging, refreshingly uncomplicated musical experience. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Folk / Rock en Castellano
I first heard Carlos Vives when a friend gave me "La Gota Fria". That is a great CD with musica tipica flavor from Colombia. It was something new for me because Vives brought a fresh interpretation with a great beat to the songs, but remained faithful to the traditional instruments and sounds. "El amor de mi Tierra" takes the concept a step further. I can hear more of the artist's own style yet the folk influence is there. I loved it, it's a fresh and different sound and I hope the Spanish radio stations will give it a lot of airtime. Music is so diverse from one Spanish speaking country to another, this CD is a great addition to any collection. Vives has great love and respect for his country's musical traditions yet I think his style can appeal to an international audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Yet
This is an incredible album. Carlos Vives has really matured through the last couple of years. A different rythm from Tengo Fe, which was more classical, I believe with this two albums Carlos Vives has finally found his path. This album is a mix of Vallenato, Cumbia, and inland beats, that rock you. I recommend El Amor de mi Tierra, Fruta Fresca and 19 de Noviembre. As an excellent and innovative performance of one of Colombia's most beatiful songs, La Piragua was masterfully performed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
This cd was just ok, it has some amazing songs like "Fruta Fresca" but i've he has better cds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Spiritual Music from Colombia
Like many Colombians, I've known about Carlos Vives from his days of Clasicos de la Provincia in 1993. Vives takes provincial music from Colombia (vallenato and cumbia, among numerous others) and infuses them with a spirituality and depth that makes the music all the more worthy. El Amore De Mi Tierra is no different. Vives pulls from various fountains of Colombian music and turns them into flowing, rhythmic world music that is accessable to all peoples. The collection here is very good. While "Fruta Fresca" is the track that most people are familiar with, "La Piragua" is definately the best track on the album. An update of a classic Colombian cumbia song, Vives's take on "La Piragua" turns the song into a lush fable full of earthy melodies and a spirit of the Amazon without forskaing the song's musical roots. For those who are new to Carlos Vives, this album is a great place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album
I first heard this record when I was in Colombia about 3 years ago and have subsequently bought the CD 6 times. Every visitor from the US or UK who hears it asks me about it and I usually end up giving it away.
Knowing Spanish will help you enjoy this more - but even without it, the rythm of the music feeds into you.
I own several of CVivas's CDs, but keep coming back to this one. ... Read more

Enrique Iglesias returns to the language that first made him an international superstar on Quizás, his fourth Spanish-language album and sixth studio release overall. The album's nine new tracks are sure to induce plenty of swooning, with Iglesias's modest voice wringing pure pop emotion out of every last note. Songs such as "Tres Palabras," "Para Que la Vida," and "Mentiroso" (the album's first single, also featured in a mariachi version) are unashamedly romantic, and Iglesias works the heartbreak angle to good effect. He picks up the pace on "La Chica de Ayer," "Marta," and "Pienso en Tí," one of the album's best tracks, which veers effortlessly between tempos. The touching title track finds Iglesias musing on the reasons he and his superstar father have drifted apart. It's an unexpectedly vulnerable moment. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best CD I've ever heard!
First,I wanna say that I don't know Spanish at all,Even the title"quizas".A friend of mine told me it meant"Maybe",but I'm not sure. Most of Enrique's English songs are Dance, and I don't like them very much, but this album gives me a brand new Enrique--Emotional n' Romatic.I don't know why,but many Chinese version has less songs than other versions. This CD only has 9 songs in China,so I bought the U.S. version. You know it's not easy to find an import CD in China, but I've got it!Although it doesn't include the Chinese translation which Chinese version alway has.I just don't wanna miss any track in this wonderful CD.I love all songs in this CD,especially "Tres Palabras"&"Quizas"
And because of Enrique,I start to learn Spanish!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Cd Enrique
Well what can i say? This is one of Enriques greatest spanish cd's, all of the songs are fantastic, im abit of a romantic, so i really like the slow songs, i love the song 'la chica de ayer' Quizas is a really great song, and i really like 'mentiroso' which is a slow song. Excellant job enrique, keep up the great work, the Dvd is pretty good too, its got some of enriques old music, and on the menu section its got the back ground to one of the songs on this cd. Buy the cd, listen to it when your with a special someone.

5-0 out of 5 stars say it,not in love ,adicto
i love all my baby enrique music

4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps ~ ! What an open title for Iglesias.
The songs found on this CD are strong while the production level is above his normal standards.

Actually, most may prefer listening to Enrique sing in his native language. While not being the best male pop vocalist on the current international market, he does manage to emotionally get his point across on CD making this product quite enjoyable to audition.

One point: I wonder who is the mastermind at UNIVERSAL MUSIC who came up with the idea to launch an ENRIQUE product with the title "PERHAPS" !

1-0 out of 5 stars remix is not a remix---just added rap
Well, I saw the alternate video for Get Right featuring Fabolous, and the song is actually REMIXED. This is not the remix. this is the same version as the second version available on the full Rebirth album, with Fabolous rapping on the original mix. And every other mix on this single I already have--that was a nice waste of money.

Without any doubts, Camilo Sesto is one of the greatest voices of the last three decades. Despite American schools' penchant for introducing foreign language at the middle-school level, research continues to prove that the earlier a child is exposed to a second language, the more likely she/he is to become bilingual. Based upon this tenet, in addition to Music for Little People's strong commitment to multicultural edu-tainment for children, the label has issued Uni Verse of Song as the first in a series of bilingual recordings especially created for children from preschool through fourth-grade levels. Featuring acclaimed artist Maria del Rey, she is here joined by a group of children singing standard American tunes in both English and Spanish. Oftentimes, verses as in "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain," are sung in English and directly followed by a translation in Spanish, thus making the language come to life with both fun and content. --Paige La Grone ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Uni Verse of Song: Spanish
My two year old daughter and I really enjoy this CD. The songs have a fun beat and are sung in Spanish and English. Also, Spanish words are reviewed in English and Spanish throughout the CD. We listen to it in the car and she moves her head back and forth to the rhythm and sings while in her car seat. The words are very easy to understand. I would definitely recommend this CD for all ages wanting to learn Spanish.

1-0 out of 5 stars It hurt my ears
I have just listened to the samples available online, and being a native spanish speaker, the gramatical errors I have heard hurt my ears. I am also bringing up my baby bilingual english/spanish, and as someone mentioned in a previous review, mixing the two lenguages goes against the expert's advice, as it creates confusion for the baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars As a bilingual educator Universe of Song is great tool !
Having worked with children day in and day out for over 15 years in the classroom. I have a treasure of special music CDs I love to use. All of Maria Del Rey's CDs belong in my favorites catagory. They are expertly done imbued with such joy and musicianship. I have found great success when children hear a phrase in their native language then in the language they desire to learn, they gain a sense of confidence with the power of music learning phrase by phrase. Kid tune out when
it's all in one language. Del Rey is brilliant to unite all the tools I need for teaching and cultural awareness with out the usual snobbery I see in other educational materials. Maria
Del Rey's cheerful and beautiful voice works wonders for the class morale as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too Cool Of An Idea!
I am a grand mother of bilingal twin granddaughters, I found this Tape to be a delightful idea, As, we would like to sing together songs we know all the words too. they do very well with both languages. I love this is is fantastical! What a joyful sound to hear multi laguages singing with joy in their voices. i know My Andrea and Elizabeth will think it is awesome themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable
My 15 month old son enjoys when we sing them together! It has helped my husband learn some Spanish too! I do agree that it is a bit confusing to have each song part English then part Spanish. I imagine that for a child who is learning languages, it may create confusion. However, since many people speak languages this way, I don't think it merits throwing this great CD away. ... One of Latino Rock's hottest acts is recorded live, stadium style, with screaming fans and all the ambience of a major rock event--which is what this is. The only difference between Maná and a Police concert is that Maná is in español. Armed with their own original material and shuffling pop reggae beats, Maná prove they are every bit as good as their source of inspiration, not just on record but also on stage. They have enough thematic twists of their own to avoid any criticism as a "knock off" act, and have built a following that marks them as the heirs apparent to Selena's pop crown. World Music fans may be dismayed at this blatant assimilation of western pop culture, but this excellent recording proves that this group has hit rock's Big Time--on their own terms. --Derek Rath ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Mana is awesome, even for those who don't speak Spanish.
After listening to their other CD's, it's hard to imagine that Mana could sound better. But the live CD is amazing! The band's vibe is clearly felt throughout the crowd and the music makes you want to sing aloud. A definite must have for Mana lovers and a good introduction for those who are not familiar with their music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mana-En Vivo
Purest Mana, right before the addition of current guitarist Sergio Vallin, but it doesn't sound at all stripped down or bare. Mana's live performances are incredible, and this CD is a true testament to that. The music went straight from show to CD, no added engineering. Pure, raw energy as only Mana can give you. A must-have if you are a diehard Mana fan, a gotta-get-it if you are new to Mana.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mana :)
Mana, this cd is live as u can see. This cd was done in 1994 infront of millions of people. Mana gave there voice to the fans. Thsi cd's u get to hear the emotions that mana makes to there fans. Mana was raced as kind of hard but now they are on the top. Its a great Cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mana En Vivo
The voice and rhythm of this band can compare itself to the famous Peter Frampton Alive. Not only does this band employs the Caribbean sounds of marimbas and its incomparable rhythm it actually deploys the purity of soft rock with the hard rock instruments making an extreme pleasurable listening experience. Every elevator should carry this album in their repertoire. I am sure would spend hours going up and down any building. ... Read more

Being a pop icon is nothing new to the Grammy-winning,Puerto Ricansinger/actor Ricky Martin. He was a child star with the '80s kid groupMenudo. And he was a regular on the soap opera General Hospital. But he hitthe big time in 1999 with his smash Anglo hit Livin’ la Vida Loca. On his new CD, Martin returnsto his Hispanic roots with this zesty Spanish language release, which translates as Souls of Silence. Backed by poetic and pulsatingstring/synth/horn production from Tommy Torres, George Noriega, Emilo Estefanand Stefano, this effort comes with all of Martin's grand moods and grooves. The fiery, flamenco-flavored "Jaleo" is rendered in Latin pop and hip-hop,Spanglish versions. Both takes, along with the equally danceable numberslike "Besos de Fuego," are designed to move your bon bon. ButMartin's bolero ballads "Tal Vez," the title track, penned by the other Latin star Alejandro Sanz, and Ricardo Arjona's "AssignaturaPendiente" show that Martin can sing for the heart and the hips. With thiseffort, Ricky Martin moves into Celine Dion territory and may be able tokeep his loyal Latino dance/ pop fans while making new ones in the adultcontemporary market. --Eugene Holley, Jr. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ricky Martin at his best
In this CD Ricky Martin goes back to his roots -- sexy, soulful ballads and strong dance tracks (check out Jaleo). Whether or not you speak Spanish, I strongly recommend you get this CD; the music stands up on its own. It does include a Spanglish version of Jaleo and a bonus video interview CD (I haven't watched it yet, so I don't know what language it's in). The CD packaging is wonderful: great pictures and lyrics to all the songs. Another plus: Many of the top Spanish-language/Latin song-writers, musicians and producers collaborated on this album, so you're getting a top quality production. It also has a greater range of music sounds and styles than Ricky's last albums. Well worth the investment, both in time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding CD
Where do I start. The whole CD is amazing. His voice, the different sounds.

Each time I listen to this CD I find I enjoy the different songs more and more. The first time I listened to it I loved the ballads, feeling the emotion in Ricky's voice brought me to tears.

The sounds of the Spanish guitars in Besos De Fuego are haunting and beautiful. Love the song. Jaleo and Jamas are good as well.
Juramento and Si Ya No Estas Aqui have Mideastern sounds. I enjoy every song for different reasons. In true Ricky Martin style it is where he is at in his life at the moment. Even though being a more mature Ricky it is like he never left. It is so good to have him and his music back once again. Can't forget the great writers here as well though. Even the song Ricky wrote, Nadie Mas Que TU is good as well.

I do not speak Spanish but love his voice anyway and have learned some words by listening. He is at his best in his native language which you don't have to understand to know the range of his feelings and what type of song he is singing.

The only downside of this purchase was that I wished the VCD had had a choice of Spanish or English.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ricky Martin at his best
This album is a great addition to Martin's repertoire. A good mix of ballads and fast paced latin rhythms, it feels very complete. Just when Livin' La Vida Loca and La Copa de Vida get annoying to listen to due to being overpopularized, the Latin composers come out with new hot Jaleo, Jamas and Besos de Fuego.

What's more, in this album Ricky Martin matures into his ballad style and his Las Almas Del Silencio, Tal Vez and others are beautiful whether you understand the words or not.

Unfortunately, the bonus interview is completely in Spanish, but if you just like looking at him - it's a full half an hour of video, not to mention the great photos included the cover booklet.

Totally worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars ....
I like many of his songs, but nad never gotten one on his CDs, is the first and it is GREAT.
Great wirters such as Ricardo Arjona (Asignatura Pendiente) and Juanes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great album!
Okie, I admit I am one of those people that absolutely hated Ricky when during his "Vida Loca" reign of the pop charts. However, now that I have actually heard him in Spanish, I take it all back. He does a great job, and hot dog, I didn't know he could sing this well. He does a great job with all of the songs, especially the Uptempo Ballads. I find myself singing along to it now and not even caring that it's "Vida Loca Ricky." The lyrics are fantastics and heartfelt. My favorite songs are "Jaleo" "Si Tu te Vas" "nadie Mas que Tu" "Y todo Queda en Nadie" The only song that I really haven't liked is "asignuta Pendiente" maybe it's becuase he says "photo con Bush" and well..that just turns me off. Great effort! It would have gotten 5 stars if i had liked EVERY song. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dramatic!!!
If you like hyper-dramatic Spanish singers, this CD is for you. Raphael sets the standard for wretched musical excess. I love it! Thirty impassioned songs of passion, tears, and fiery lyrics. There's nothing subtle about Raphael. He belts them out like a bullfighter on speed.

One song I wish was here is his version of "Ave Maria' but there are plenty of other good ones -- "Digan lo que Digan," "Yo soy aquel," a so-so version of the great folk song "Llorona," "No me Puedo Quejar" and a passionate rendition of one of the most flamboyant songs ever written: "Malaguena." Most of the upbeat songs on this CD are turkeys, but there's enough good, slow songs to give it a top rating.

In English, Raphael would sound silly; in French he would sound pompous; in Spanish he sounds fabulous. Turn the volume up.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Cafe Tacuba have a kind of childish mood that may bother some people. If there is a basic story in their lyrics is about the problem of love among younsters, the simple desire for dance, and the weird aspects of love and reality. However, their strenght is their high quality as musicians. Mainly, what should be stressed is both their high capacity for styles mixture and their highly creative covers. They jump from "ranchera" to ska, or reagge , or trash , or disco. Their covers of "Ojalá que llueva café" (Juan Luis Guerra), "No controles" (Mecano) or "Cómo te extraño" (Leo Dan) demonstrate both their creativity and exploration over different kind of music. Tiempo transcurrido is probably the best example of all their "chamaleonistic" capacity. Undoubtely, one of the best recopilation in the rock en español era.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST BAND OF THIS CENTURY!!!
I hate greatest hit albums, but whatever you end up buying of Cafe Tacuba, I GUARANTEE, you will not be dissapointed. I prefer getting each album by itself because only they know why they set them up the way they did, but if you'd like to get a taste of their flavor then a greatest hits is the way to go.

I'm a very picky musician, but Cafe Tacuba set me straight and made me an addict. I bought the album "RE" about 3 weeks ago, i listen to it EVERY ... DAY!!! and up to now, i have not got tired of it. I recommend anything that the Tacubos put their hands on. PEACE!

5-0 out of 5 stars IT DOESN'T MATTER YOU'VE HEARD ABOUT'EM OR NOT
The "chilanga banda" will take you to both: top and bottom; back and fort;once and again, in just minutes,of your strings. So, that you will be able to manage your stress status to your convenience. Wouldn't be great to dump all negative thoughts and fellings without staining the brain walls?
Time, won't get rid of them, they're rid-in' on it!
What a band! this album is a time machine for me. Every note reminds me of a move I did good or bad, in a good sense of humor. U go roosters!

4-0 out of 5 stars If you were only going to buy one Café Tacuba CD...
...then this would give you the widest choice of material. Frankly, I would recommend that if you're going to get just one Café Tacuba album, you should strongly consider getting "Re" instead-- good as though the material compiled on this album is, it is a best-of, while "Re" is a mind-blowing, carefully put together album that has to be ranked as one of the best of the past decade.

5-0 out of 5 stars The rise of Hispanic rock
Clearly and hands down one of the most original groups to ride the now pretty matured alternative tidalwave : the vocals, the crazy lyrics, the originality in everything (listen to the instruments and objects used). I would have chosen a few different pieces for this compilation but a must, no doubt. And keep your eyes on them--they have done a lot already, they may have peaked (by the time the greatest hits come out, you know...) but they very well may not have peaked yet. No matter what, you MUST know Cafe Tacuba. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundacion 2003 - Heroes Del Silencio

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential
Heroes were one of the best rock bands ever. This collection does do justice. Most of their best you will find on this 2 disc collection. "Mar Adentro", "Agosto", "Despertar", "Entre 2 tierras" and "La Carta" are some of my all time faves. Their sound is a cross between Iron Maiden and The doors. This has some great remixes, and all the live stuff is of high quality as well. I reccomend this strongly if you are even remotely into rock en español.

5-0 out of 5 stars LO MEJOR DEL ROCK
if your a true Rockero than this is a must have for your collection. feel the music inside.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entre Dos Tierras

From their begining to their end, this set incude the songs of the best, they sing pure mastery in poetry living "Entre Dos Tierras" making them the best rock band ever in the latin world. I recommend this album to all spanish rock listeners all the "rockeros & rockeras" this is a never again must have in your "golden collection". Its a masterpiece, "Para siempre Heroes" ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Le falto mucho

5-0 out of 5 stars Este disco bien podría llamarse Arjona: Grandes Éxitos

5-0 out of 5 stars Arjona's "Historias"
Tremendous album! Even for native English speakers -- or maybe especially for them (that is, Gringos like me), this is a first rate album. Two of the cuts..."Historia de Taxi" and "Ayúdame Freud" are without equal as contemporary ballads. I've had the album at least 7 years and it is a constant, never boring favorite. Fun way to learn Spanish, too...Worth it at twice the price. I'd write more, but I'd rather go listen to 'Taxi' for the millioneth time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best CD I ever heard
This is an excellent CD!. When I heard this CD I couldn't believe that is was so good and interesting!!.
I not only liked Arjona's voice, but also, what the songs said.

If I had to say which is my favourite songs, it would be either HISTORIAS DE TAXI, or SI YO FUERA, or REALMENTE NO ESTOY TAN SOLO or LA NOCHE TE TRAE SORPRESAS (yes, I know, I should choose only one, but it is so difficult!!!).....but CASA DE LOCOS and HISTORIAS DEL PORTERO are excellent too.

I loved Arjona's songs but I only have one CD so far: "Historias". Anyway, I think that is the best one.
Please tell my what YOU think about this genious of music. I'd love to discuss that with the man, woman, girl or boy that is reading this now.
I can't believe that only recently (in December), I discovered Ricardo Arjona's songs. Before that, I had heard one or two of his songs, but not all the CD.
I recommended this CD...once you hear it, the only thing that you are going to complain about is that you didn't hear before!.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best pop en español albums of all time!
Arjona is a master storyteller, and that is not all that you get on this disc. The arrangements on some of these tunes are top notch as well. "Historia del taxi" is one of my personal all time favorite tunes, which tells a pretty steamy story of lust, social indifferences and revenge. Then "La noche trae sorpresas" and "Me estan jodiendo la vida" are great rocknroll tunes. "historia del portero" is a country song which is written brilliantly as well, that one always makes me smile. Buy this, and be sure to read the lyrics, it's like reading short stories. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Una de sus mejores obras..
Recomendado!

Jorge Negrete may have been Mexico's first cinematic ranchera hero, but perhaps because of his premature death in 1953, Pedro Infante surpassed him in the number of hit movies and recordings. And like that of Negrete, Infante's fantastic recording output has been constantly released in new compilations. This collection has most of his signature hits, including "Cien Años," a heartbreak tune about being abandoned, and "Paloma Querida," an old standard reinvented by Infante when he sings with cool detachment about love's inspiration. Infante was untrained, his approach was simple but emotive, yet he was talented enough to make unforgettable such other classics as Agustin Lara's "Mujer" and "Amor de Mis Amores," and the uplifting bolero "Amor a la Distancia." Infante died in a plane crash in 1957 but is immortalized in his movies and music. --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful singer, horrible recording
I love Pedro Infante. There is noone that can sing like him. That is why when I bought this CD I was truelly dissapointed because it was hard to hear his magnificiant voice. This recording appeared to sound like some took his original LP and put a sheet over the microphone, he sounded so muffled. I truelly love this artist, and becuase of that I realy hated how they rerecorded his songs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Songs by a Great Singer
What more can be said about such a great natural voice? The songs are great, but the recording quality is not so sharp on this CD. Needless to say, the songs were not recorded in the studios of today. The lyrics, and voice of Pedro Infante, are a joy to hear and one is tempted to sing along, or just sit and enjoy. (In case the reader is unfamiliar with Pedro Infante, the reader should know all songs are sung in Spanish)

5-0 out of 5 stars PEDRO INFANTE PURE FEELINGS, LOVE, HAPPINESS AND PEACE
I LOVE THE CD CALLED LAS ROMANTICAS DE PEDRO INFANTE, I HAVE NOT FOUND ANOTHER MUSIC FROM ANOTHER ACTOR THAT GIVES ME SO MUCH PLEASURE FEELINGS AND ALL DIFFEREND KINDS OF FEELINGS.THERE ARE NOT WORDS TO EXPLAIN HOW GREAT PEDRO INFANTE WAS AS A MUSICIAN AND AS AN ACTOR. HE IS A LEGENDARY AND HIS MUSIC WOULD BE ALIVE FOREVER AFTER. EVERYTIME I LISTEN TO A NEW SONG FROM PEDRO INFANTE, I EXPERIENCE A NEW FEELING OF PLEASURE AND EXCITEMENT INCOMPARABLE TO NO ONE. I LOOK FORWARD FOR SONGS THAT I HAVE NOT HEARD YET, FOR MY COLLECTION OF PEDRO INFANTE'S MUSIC. THAT IS MY PERSONAL OPINION, WHAT IS YOURS?

4-0 out of 5 stars Pain and elation, all at once
Pedro Infante was one of those rare artists, who can command respect and pity at the same time. his music, his songs are achingly beautiful, and yet to know he died so young is a heartbreaker. Ramiro bur is right on the money in his bio essay in the "Billboard Guide to Tejano and regional Mexican Music," on Billboard Books: "In the history of Mexican pop culture, there has never been an artist who captured the hearts and minds of Mexicans like the ranchera singer/film actor Pedro Infante." So true and yet, so sad. LaNancy ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Libertad Lamarque will be missed-her recordings will go on.
I've had Libertad Lamarque's album Tangos Imortales on vinyl since my mother gave it to me as a birthday present in 1975. In fact I live near the street where the now defunct record shop where mom bought it was! I was thrilled to hear this fine LP is available now on CD. To be honest, I didn't listen to the CD since I know all the songs by heart and it's in mono anyway. Did you know in the TV movie Evita Peron Rita Moreno's charcter was based on Libertad Lamarque? Her legendary battles with star-turned-politcian Eva Peron got her exiled to Mexico. Argetntina's loss is the world's gain. I especially liked the male vocalist on Cantando and Adios Muchachos later became the english language song I Get Ideas. A Media Luz is fun to listen but Plegaria is the most dramatic song on the album(as if the album needed a dramatic song) and it's not sampled on this website! Oh well! The lady died on Dec. 12 at aged 92 in Mexico City. Having worked for over 70 years she will be missed but her recordings will go on. Tangos Imortales is not to be missed by ANY music fans

5-0 out of 5 stars a bright star from the past
This fabulous actress and singer is an Argentine treasure. She sings with such passion and sincerity, and her sparkling voice (even though these recordings are from many years ago) sounds crystal clear and full of life.

Her rendition of "Nostalgias" is wonderful, as is "La Cumparsita", and the spoken section of "Inspiración" will give you a glimpse of what a luminous presence she was on film. Though I confess, I don't normally appreciate the female voice, Libertad Lamarque holds a special place in my heart and in my CD collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Libertad Lamarque has a beautiful voice.
Libertad Lamarque has a beautiful voice that is full of emotion. When you listen to her sing you are taken to the "place" she is at. I and my mother enjoy her music very much and am looking forward to acquiring more of her music. Please offer more of her music. Thank you

4-0 out of 5 stars Brings back a lot of memories. It's heartwarming music.
Listening to this music brings a lot of warm memories back, my mother and grandmother young and beautiful, listening, singing. Yes, it doesn't have the sharpness of new recordings, but Libertad Lamarque's voice is clear and melodious, the feelings and the passion come through and the nostalgic and sentimental music touches within. ... Spanish-born heartthrob Alejandro Sánchez Pizarro, better known to the world as Alejandro Sanz, burst onto the Latin pop charts as a 16-year-old with his hit "Los Chulos Son Pa' Cuidarlos." He followed that with a number of killer CDs, including his 1993 breakout, Si Tú Me Miras, which guest-starred flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, Nacho Maño, and ChrisCameron. This 2001 live date, recorded in Miami, was nominated for the 2002 Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year. It captures the pathos and passion of Sanz's tearful tenor voice much better than his studio dates. Backed by strings, horns, and a rhythm section with Latin percussion, Sanz's velvet voice is presented in a sonic setting that brings out his maturity. That maturity is heard on the flamenco-flavored dedication to his daughter, "Y Solo Se Me Ocurre Amarte," and on his standbys "Amiga Mia," "Corazón Partío," and "Quiero Morir en Tu Veneno." Though the format is known for its hype, it's on the mark with this artist. --Eugene Holley Jr. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars En directo: un sentir
--------------
The beauty of this work is its presentation: an almost bare to the bone arragement of his latest recordings. Alejandro might not posses one of the greatest voices in history, and he might know it, however his lyric voice is quite present and unique on each song. You can tell that the kid has read contemporary Spanish poetry, and that he has a soft side for the gypsy ways. The arrangements can be a bit repetitive for those studied musicians, but they still preserve his melancholic introspection. 'Cuando nadie me ve' can be a song about undressing the soul of an artist when the cameras and microphones, which insist in trying to understand his art, are gone. In that song Alejandro undresses his soul, little by little, with each syllable, and he shows us a man feeling. Well, being human is one of the goals of many of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuando viene la segunda parte??

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice voice, great album
I got this album a few years ago because I'd been hearing a lot about it. I'd never heard any Alejandro Sanz songs before except for Corazon Partio (his version and the remake by another group). The first couple of times I heard the album, I thought I'd make a mistake in buying it, but eventually it became one of my favorites (I had the same reaction to Manu Chao's "Proxima estacion esperanza"). I agree with the reviewers who thought his songs seem forgettable maybe because the melody meanders a bit: they're not all instantly "catchy," but hear them enough times and you won't be able to get them out of your head.
Hint: Play the album as background music at first.

The songs are absolutely beautiful, and he has the kind of voice I love..soothing and sexy (listen to Carlos Ponce too if you like Alejandro's voice)

My favorite track on this album is "Y solo se me ocurre amarte," which was written for his daughter.
I was just about to list my other favorites, but realized that they were almost the entire album

5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best to date...
I own this CD as well as Más, El alma al aire, and Básico, and this is my favorite so far, though I have yet to buy No es lo mismo. Granted, some of the songs do have a relatively high cheese factor, but this format suits almost all of his songs best. Todo es de Color and Aprendiz are gorgeous songs on this CD, and Alejandro's not too bad himself. Highly recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Non-Classical CD I Own
First of all, I'm not really sure what is up with the other reviews--this guy and his music are all great. Just trust me on that one.

For those who don't know, this is the album from the concert he did for MTV's Unplugged. I've seen it on video, and bought the CD a few months ago. It's basically a collection of some of his best songs from his previous albums from the last few years, with a twist on them to make them sound more, well, unplugged; i.e., no synthesizers, minimal guitar amplification, et cetera.

I had never heard any of these songs before, and when I listened to it for the first time, I automatically fell in love with about four songs. Over the last few months that I've owned this CD, I've gotten used to, and eventually become enamored with the rest. The order of the songs is not how the concert went, but is strategically placed for the listener. I'll do my best to provide a brief synopsis and rough transation of each title.

"Cuando Nadie Me Ve," or "When No One Sees Me" is a slow, great ballad with a lot of piano, and a large focus on Alejandro and his voice. "Y Solo se Me Ocurre Amarte" or "And All I Can Do is Love You," is one of his most popular songs that came out within the last few years, a little faster than the opening ballad, but with a great beat, fantastic lyrics, great bridge and closing. "Amiga Mia" or "Friend of Mine" is about a girl who he likes who is (assumedly) involved with another guy who doesn't treat her as well as her friend thinks she should be treated. Great song, good message.

"Se le Apago la Luz" "The Light was Turned Off" is one of my favorites, with a great melody, powerful lyrics--definitely one to play if you're looking to cry. "Quisiera Ser" or "I'd Love to Be," is an upbeat song about (a common theme) a guy and a girl and them being in love, great romantic stuff. "Aprendiz" or "I Learned" is a song about break up and revenge. It's got a neat melody, great beat---I used to salsa with my girlfriend to it---and fun bridge. "Quiero Morir en Tu Veneno" or "I Want to Die in Your Poision" (don't worry, it's a happy song) is my second favorite on the album. It has a fantastic intro with a sort of African beat to it (much different than the original version) great modulation on the key change during the bridge, and unforgettable lyrics.

"Como Te Echo de Menos" or "How We've Come Along" is another great song about love. "Corazon Partio" or "Broken Heart" is probably his most popular song from recent memory---great beat, great lyrics, popular with the ladies--all come together for one of the most fun songs on the CD. "Siempre es de Noche" or "It's Always Night" is my favorite song on the CD--a great story-type song about him and a woman he knows who has a secret relationship with him, fun to listen to. "Toca para Mi" or "Play for Me" is another popular, slow ballad--great lyrics, another tear jerker. "Todo Lo Que Fui es Todo Lo Que Soy," or "All I Was is All I Am," is a neat little jazz-ish song---brings a smile to your face, and you can tell it's one of his favorites with the little remarks he makes in the background.

He was scheduled to perform this concert on September the 14th, 2001, or something like that, but because of the events of the time, it was postponed---the rescheduled concert had a new song, "Todo es de Color." It's a solo for him and his flamenco guitarist, who is fantastic by the way on this song. It talks about the world, God, why things happen, and is incredibly interesting to listen to---a really gypsy sound.

That raps it up. Like I said, a fantastic compilation, well done vocals, well written lyrics, fun to listen to, good music. Buy it, I guarantee you won't be dissapointed. ... Read more

In an attempt to appease Ricky's Spanish-speaking fans and resuscitate his ailing crossover career, the folks at Sony have unleashed La Historia a mere three months after releasing the underperforming Sound Loaded, which has failed to generate any Loca-sized pop hits. The 17-track Historia compiles the biggest Spanish-language hits off Martin's six albums, and--not surprisingly--it's his best effort since 1998's Vuelve. Martin tends to comes off like an overzealous Broadway extra on his English-language albums, but he infuses his Spanish tracks with nuance andpassion. "La Copa de la Vida" (the superior original version of "The Cup of Life") crackles with electricity, and "Por Arriba, por Abajo" revels in acoustic energy. Martin also excels at ballads, most notably the pensive "Vuelve" and the exquisite "Perdido sin Ti," his finest recording to date. La Historia also includes rerecorded versions of early hits "Fuego Contra Fuego" and "El Amor de Mi Vida," along with the current hit "Sólo Quiero Amarte." There's no telling how long Martin will make English-language fans shake their bon-bon, but his Spanish catalog promises a long and bright future. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

If you want to get to know Ricky Martin's Spanish music and who he was as an artist before the US discovered him and overplayed his music, you should get this CD. These songs are a wonderful representation of his entire career, in both ballads and tunes that make your bon bon shake! Also, there are some updates on classics like "El Amor De Mi Vida", which is wonderful. Buy this CD and you will fall in love with Martin and his music!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of Ricky's spanish-language hits
Being primarily a fan of Ricky Martin's more recent work, I have been slowly branching out to his earlier albums. This means that basically I had only listened to Vuelve, his most recent Spanish-language album, before ordering LH on the recommendation of fellow fans. I found this collection of hits to be very good, a wonderful sampling of what I knew already and what I had yet to learn about this wonderful artist. Some of my standout favorites, in fact, come from his third album, A Medio Vivir, including "Volveras" and "Fuego de Noche, Nieve de Dia."

I think that many people unfamiliar with Ricky are unaware that he has been performing for nearly 20 years and is now working on his 8th album. Most people believe his work began with Vuelve or perhaps even 1999's "Ricky Martin". La Historia allows new Ricky fans to sample his previous work before going out and buying all of his earlier albums, and it also includes the spanish-language versions of the now-familiar songs She's All I Ever Had, She Bangs, Nobody Wants to Be Lonely, and Livin la Vida Loca.

For die-hard fans, LH is a great collection of the best and the brightest. I strongly recommend it for all listeners!

5-0 out of 5 stars La Historia
La Historia~ Ricky Martin proves what I thought. Rikcy Martin is so mcyh more comfortable to sing in Spanish and his music lends itself better to this language. Spanish is a language for lovers and poetry...english is not as...and it shows here that he should have stayed with Spanish instead of trying to cross over.

Gifted with a gracefully pliant midrange soprano, stellar recording artist Maria Del Rey here turns her attention to lullabies and to an immersion of culture and language with Latin American poems adapted and translated for this purpose. Del Rey delivers the first half of Lullabies of Latin America in the gently fluid tones of Spanish, then follows up in the second half with a repeat of the same songs sung in English. Del Rey's cello, piano, and acoustic guitar figure prominently, and she is also accompanied by a talented group of musicians on percussion, strings, flute, and oboe, as well as on Peruvian harp, panpipes, and other traditional Latin American instrumentation. "Duerme Clave" and its English counterpart, "Sleep Rosie Flower," are particularly engaging, featuring soft piano and elegant lines of Spanish classical guitar. "San Augustine" and its correlation are gorgeously slumber-inducing duets. With their unhindered capacity for linguistics, wee ones will be sweetly singing along with both versions in no time. --Paige La Grone ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Latin Grammy Nominated CD!
Maria Del Rey received a nomination for a Latin Grammy for this work and it was well deserved. Even if you don't speak Spanish, this album relaxes your soul and lifts your spirit. A well-researched piece of work that brings together latin traditions from all across the world and presents them in a way both Latino and non-Latino listeners will appreciate. My daughter and I have found it very educational....a good addition to the many Spanish/educational tapes and videos on which Maria Del Rey has either performed or produced. We look forward to her next children's CD (we already have Universe of Song).

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow what a voice!
I am a grandmother who has given Maria Del Rey CDs to everyone in my family and to friends who have young children. It a gift that I love to give. Maria has an amazing and tender voice. I can feel her heart in every note. She is rare gem to have that kind of talent and share it with our children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maria Del Rey's Lullabies are great for nap times
As an Educator and mother, I highly reccomend Lullabies of Latin America. In my family we have a long tradition of
handing down music, books and stories. Maria has totally captured the beauty and warmth that I remember my mother and my abuela singing to me as a child. These are the classics, these beautiful lullabies brought such tender emotion in me when
I first heard them. When I taught preschool for a few years
the children always loved Maria's voice. The whole atmosphere was so peaceful in class during our nap times. When you work in the trenches with children everyday you need materials that work and I trust Maria Del Rey's work, she is just wonderful.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not many lullabyes in Spanish
As others have noted, this turns out to be only a handful of lullabyes in Spanish sung by Maria Del Rey, plus nursery rhymes spoken by children and men (not very good for putting a baby to sleep), plus the whole thing repeated in English. In addition, I had been looking for traditional Latin American pieces and apparently all of these are contemporary. Don't waste your money...I'm planning on giving my copy away if I can figure out someone I know who could actually use it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I had hoped
I had high hopes for this CD based on its rave reviews, but I was disappointed. Though the musicianship is excellent, a few of the songs are not lullabies, but rather are upbeat rythmic pieces that aren't helpful when we're trying to get our baby's eyelids to finally shut. Also, since the songs are repeated in English, you then get two doses of the same songs. This CD isn't bad, but for anyone looking for lullabies in Spanish, I'd recommend the "Latin Lullaby" CD. ... I love "Get Right". It's very funky, and very entertaining. The saxophone sample is a little annoying but when time passes by, you will groove to the music! It's one of Jennifer Lopez's best single! ... Read more
