5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Beautiful Guitar Music
I have been playing guitar for over 35 years and began purchasing LP's by Los Indios Tabajaras (LIT) around 30 years ago. About five years ago, after the LP's started wearing out and CD's became popular, I got on the internet and purchased Serie Platino and Maria Elena/Always In My Heart through CDNow. I recommend Serie Platino highly, primarily because it contains "Penelope." For anyone who does not have the LIT version of Penelope and is trying to decide which of many CD's by LIT to buy first, I would strongly recommend picking a CD containing Penelope. In my opinion, it is probably one of the most beautiful, melodic songs ever played on guitar. I have sat and listened to it over and over on many occasions. Although there are several great songs on the CD, it is worth purchasing for Penelope alone.
I am now looking for a CD version of their "Casual Classics", but don't believe it is available, at least yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touches the heart
I first heard them when I was 14yrs (1964) at a friends. His father made classical guitars as a hobby. My friend and I where of course Beatle fans but we loved Los Indios Tabarajas also. In fact we both learned to play classical guitar by listening to their music. Such talent!!!. I wish I could have seem in concert. Well this album represents very much the music that touched our hearts and continues to touch everyone else's that I introduce this music to no matter how young or old. Even my son is a fan of them, I hope to see more of their CD's in the future cause I wore out all of my LP's

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest of Tabajars' guitar playing...
I first heard this collection as a kid in late 60's in SriLanka, and ever since I came to US I have been looking for this. In this CD, Tabajars play many popular tunes such as Amapola, Amor, Frenesi, and Perfidia in Latin-American style. It also contains a few classical pieces as ValsEn Do Sostinido (Chipin). There is no words to describe the recording and sound quality- you hear only two or three guitars with the bass, and Tabjars' will rock the place- great for Latin-American dancing!

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutedly masterful
AS A PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN MYSELF,I HAVE BEEN A FOLLOWER OF THIS DUO IN PARTICULAR BECAUSE THEY STANDOUT FROM THE ALSO RAN INMITADORS.THEIR CRISP AND MELLOW STYLE IS WELL ABOVE ANYTHING I HAVE HEARD IN MY FORTY FIVE YEARS AS A PERFORMER .THE PRODUCTION OF (CASUALLY CLASSIC R.C.A.)ALBUM IN THE 1966 IS A SUPERB COLLECTION OF THE FINEST DUET OF STRINGS EVER RECORDED. I LOST THIS L.P. YEARS AGO AND I AM WILLING TO PAY YOUR PRICE IF YOU CAN FIND IN YOUR IN YOUR ARCHIVES...........

5-0 out of 5 stars Once you hear these strings, it will touch your heart&soul.
The last time I heard Los Indios Tabajaras was 20 years ago. Many people do not know, they started with an old guitar they found. Their beautiful Music speaks volumes, of what we can accomplish in life. It's a shame, you don't Advertise their music more. It's Music for lovers and romantics. Elena ... Read more

The title of this CD is mildly misleading as this collection is not strictly homegrown Latin in its focus. There are also tracks by Manzanita, a Spanish Roma (Gypsy) player famous for his rumba flamenca (this is what the Gipsy Kings play); Kaoma (a group famous--or infamous--for its high-profile participation in the lambada craze); and Ricardo Lemvo, a Congolese star with an Afro-Cuban style redolent of Kinshasa during the 1960s. That being said, it is unlikely that these 10 tracks will disappoint anyone. It's prime stuff, ranging from Colombia's Toto La Momposina to Oscar de Leon from Venezuela, to the Bay Area's own Conjunto Céspedes. Latin music is a complicated subject and many would-be listeners are too intimidated to try it. This album was compiled by a fan, rather than a pundit, with a naive enthusiasm that's certain to help beginners feel relaxed enough for further explorations. --Christina Roden ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great cd
This is an album that is sure to lift your spirits. Full of great Latin dance beats, from artists from Cuba, Spain, South America and even Zaire. A great selection and variety, from Salsa and Rumba to Son. The booklet is also very informative, with a piece about each artist and the song. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent****
I first heard this CD when I started teaching 1st grade. My first graders loved this CD and asked me to play it for them..I fell in love with it too. Even my own children love the music. No matter what nationality you are, you will enjoy this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Makes me want to dance!
This is a fabulous compilation. Wonderful beats and melodies make you feel like you are in a steamy latin nightclub. "Music from the Coffee Lands" (another Putumayo release) is also wonderful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Variety and great beats... I give it a 98!
The only way this album would get a perfect score would be if it included the lyrics to the wonderful selection of songs included. From start to finish, if this CD doesn't get your pulse going, instruct your relatives to call 911--you're dead! I have a large latin album collection and I come back to this one time and again for the variety it offers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Dance Music
As a ballroom and latin dance instructor, I have used this Latin CD more than any that I own. The Cha Cha's and Salsa's are of perfect tempo. The music is simply wonderful to listen to whether dancing or not. ... Read more

The most successful of ex-Menudo members, Ricky Martin delivered a worldwide hit with the club favorite "Maria" (you know, the "un, dos, tres, Maria!" song), and here he follows up with more urgent, catchy pop tunes with emphasis again on danceable rhythms. Solid-impact tunes include the terrific and upbeat "Marcia Baila" and the percussion- and horn-driven opener "Por Arriba, por Abajo," complete with African chants. Occasional soft tunes like the samba-flavored "La Bomba" and the melancholy "Casi un Bolero" only serve as time-outs from the dance fever evoked on tunes like the finger-snapping "Lola, Lola" and the rhythmic title track. Weak is "No Importa la Distancia," a bland cover of Michael Bolton's "Hercules." --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars When you buy this CD, you will know why it won a Grammy.
In one word: maravilloso! If you've just recently discovered Ricky Martin, you owe it to yourself to buy this album. Even if you don't understand Spanish, you will feel the emotion in every song. This album will take you away...to another place...it's THAT good. It is by far the best album he has ever done...you will be haunted by these songs long after you turn off the music. Lola, La Bomba, La Copa de la Vida and Marcia Baila will have you dancing around the house, singing at the top of your lungs, while Vuleve, Casi un Bolero, Perdido Sin Ti and Hagamos el Amor will leave you breathless. Do yourself a favor and buy a Spanish dictionary - once you understand what he's saying, you'll never want him to sing in English again!

4-0 out of 5 stars Ricky--King of Latin Sound
The "Vuelve" cd has a wonderful cross of up-tempo (gotta get up and dance songs) with romantic ballads. My favorites are "Bomba", a perfect party song for anyone to enjoy. Also "Por Arriba, Por Abajo" which is a song that just keeps building with an amazing accompaniment of horns that drives you right through the song with your shoulders shaking to the beat. "Lola, Lola" is still a great dance song, but has a slower pace that's almost hypnotic. "Casi Un Bolero" is just a beautiful song that haunts you--EVEN if you don't know what the words mean! And then of course "Copa de la Vida", which you may remember from the World Cup (Soccer) a few year back. This is a perfect "get the party started" song! All in all, this is an excellent cd that you will enjoy whether you speak Spanish or not. I know I'm very happy to own it!

5-0 out of 5 stars el mejor disco de ricky martin

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT CD
This is a incredible CD. I stumbled upon it when a co-worker put in on in his car. Well, I ended up borrowing it so much that he finally just gave it to me. Before I heard this CD, I didn't give Ricky Martin much credit. I wasn't that impressed with his English pop stuff. This CD totally changed my mind about him and his talent. Every song is fantastic, from the vocals to the music. I often play this CD during dinner parties, and even though I get groans when I say that I'm going to play a Ricky Martin, my guests usually go home as Ricky converts. I can honestly say that this is one of my favorite CDs of all time (by ANY artist). Try it, you'll love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Don't speak Spanish, but 'say "Si" to this one!
Although I purchased the two follow-ups to this release, I still find "Vuelve" to be a more enjoyable album. Martin appears to vocally emote better in his native Spanish than he does in English.

There must be some truth in the saying that "it loses something in the translation". ... Read more

Argentinean popsters Soda Stereo, recorded live at MTV Studios in Miami, are not exactly acoustic as one might suppose from the title, but do project a light touch--somewhere between contemporary and alternative rock genres. There is little audience participation between the eleven songs that feature some psychedelic electronic swirls, cellos, and violas alongside standard rock guitars, as Soda Stereo move through a somewhat limited repertoire. This is an "interactive" CD, with additional content designed to be played both on regular CD players and computer CD-ROM drives, but it proves difficult to get the audio-only tracks on a Mac, and a lot of the footage and graphics are either inconsequential or irrelevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitivamente... para volar!

5-0 out of 5 stars How an unplugged session should be done
Soda Stereo was, and still is, the best spanish speaking band of all time. This is their last album, not studio album tough, an unplugged session for MTV Latino in march 1996, a year before their break up, and show why they were the best. They had a catalogue of songs so vast that they chose not their most popular, but songs that would flow together very well, reworking some of them and making them very different than the original versions. This is probably the only great unplugged session by a latin group ever done (La Ley was terrible). One requirement to make an unplugged that an artist should take note is that they need an extense catalogue of songs to choose from (pay attention Shakira). The openener "En la ciudad de la furia" is an epic where they invited Andrea Echeverry to sing the chorus, La Ley tried to copy this formula and failed terribly with Ely Guerra. The second song "un misil en mi placard" was completely transformed from a reggae rythm to a slower acoustic rock song.
This album stands not only as the greatest latin unplugged but as one of the best overall, along with Nirvana and Eric Clapton.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soda Stereo MTV Plugged
... Read more

TRAE RECUERDOS INCREIBLES.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great sound, great music!
The sound quality is impeccable! I picked up this recording because it is really the only decent Mocedades compilation that deals with their 80s work. Songs like "Maitechu Mia," "Cuando Tu Nazcas," and "Asi Fue Nuestro Amor" (all from the album "La Musica") are all classics impossible to find in the States (or in Seattle, at least!). This album also has a bunch of live tracks from a live album called "15 Anos De Musica." Basically, you get a lot of songs you could only find on expensive imports. It's a good primer for Mocedades, and after you're hooked you can go buy their back catalogue, like I have. Thanks to Amazon for carrying it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow...The Best Nek CD
I first heard about Nek a couple years ago in my high school Spanish class when I heard "Laura No Esta" and I've been a die hard fan ever since. When I was in Italy during the past summer, I luckily caught a Nek special on TV in Milan, which was fabolous. Unfortunately, I missed a Nek concert since he was performing about a month before I arrived. This entire album is absolutely wonderful to say the least. Nek has a phenomenal voice! There are excellent collaborations with Laura Pausini and Dante Thomas. You won't regret purchasing this CD!

P.S. - To reviewer Florence of London, England: "Almeno Stavolta" is from his brand new CD that came out in October 2003 called "L'anno Zero...The Best Of Nek". I believe that album is available here on Amazon. The Spanish album will be released later.

5-0 out of 5 stars happily surprised
Before I had bought this cd I'd only heard "sei solo tu" and I wasn't sure was the album worth of it's price. Fortunately it was. When I'd listened the album I was sure that this artist truly has a talent. He can sing, he can compose, he can write great songs. What else do you need? Nek has a amazing voice, very strong. He has used lots of guitars which I really do like. I'd say that he's music is a little bit more rock version of Eros Ramazzotti's music.

Sound Loaded, Ricky Martin's follow-up to his self-titled 1999 triumph, is a marvel as much of cross-country technological wizardry as of a multicultural pop sensibility. "She Bangs," its first single, was made in seven locations from Miami to Hollywood; all the work results in a gratifying everything-and-the-kitchen-sink uptempo extravaganza. (The details include a sampled nod to Fishbone, an apparent influence on 1999's "Livin' la Vida Loca," and the delightful malapropism "She looks like a flower but she stings like a bee.") If the rest of the disc never quite matches that high, neither does its quality sink much; if anything, Sound Loaded may be a bigger cut-for-cut success than its predecessor. The winners are mostly similar dancefloor rockers, but the ballads generally skirt the edge of treacle. Spanish versions of "She Bangs," "Come to Me," and "Loaded" are additions to the dozen cuts in English. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More energetic and original than the first, but cheesy songs
As an old Ricky Martin fan, I just had to get this cd!!! I was disappointed after his crossover album, because there wasn't much fun and originality, but this cd is more diverse and energetic. With all new songs, and editions in Spanish and English, and then a song, exclusively in Spanish, Ricky proves that he can still connect with all of his previous fans. I would have to say that all of the songs are cheesy as in meaning, and style and all, but that are fun dance tunes. I could see myself dancing for a long time with this cd. The lyrics are nothing to pay attention to, for one... I am in love with teh diverse rhythms and such! My favorites songs so far are: Cambia la Piel, One Night Man, Loaded, and I guess She Bangs...The style of these songs is definently different, but I don't know if better....??

5-0 out of 5 stars "Sound Loaded"is going to be my vacation CD
"Sound Loaded" is filled with "Livin La Vida Loca" music.Living the wild life, and wonderfull, moving ballads. The only negative thing I have to say about this record is the beutifull ballad with Christina Aguilera,"Nobody wants to be lonely,"is not on this record, even though Ricky does a great job solo on the cut.My favorite number,"Saint Tropez," is one cut I can't stop playing. It has a great Spanish Horn track ."Loaded," reminds me of "Livin La Vida Loca,"and there's a spanish version, along with "She Bangs," and the best ballad on the CD,"Come to Me."The bottom line is,if you loved Rickys last album, you have to buy this one.It fills great to be alive after playing "Sound Loaded," and you want to hear it again.Especially "Saint Tropez,"and "Come to Be." Two songs that are going to be huge hits this summer.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm not impressed
I found that Ricky Martin's version of William Hung's "She Bangs" was deplorable. Mr. Martin needs to learn how to be more original.

4-0 out of 5 stars bueno

1-0 out of 5 stars Livin' La Vida Broka
Boy, this guy sure is a flop. Talk about a total flash-in-the-pan...One minute he's on top of the world, the next minute he's "livin' la vida broka!!!" I've heard this record, and it totally lacks soul and flair. Maybe this loser should get back with his boyz from Menudo - at least they had good songs!!

The only worthwhile tune on this record is "Nobody Wants to be Lonely," and even that is a little disappointing since it doesn't have goddess Christina Aguilera on it.

Oh well. This joker was bound to land with a dull thud sooner or later. For real Mexican rock, check out Frank Black or Los Huevos.

You go, girl! Riding on the coattails of the Latin explosion, teen sensation Christina Aguilera decided to tap into her Ecuadorianroots (on her father's side) and brush up on her Spanish. With hernewfound tongue, she translates five tracks of her multiplatinum self-titled debut. "Genie in a Bottle" becomes "Genie Atrapado," "ComeOn Over" becomes "Ven Conmigo," and her other major hits getcode-switched and granted the added value of Spanish guitar anddizzied-up Latin disco beats. Fans, especially those who understand thelanguage, should rush to pick up this album. In the year since Aguilerareleased her self-titled debut, she'shoned her chops and figured out what kind of artist she wants to be:namely, an R&B heavy-hitter, not a pop princess. To prove her stayingpower and worth, she does serious vocal acrobatics with so muchconfidence and clarity on Mi Reflejo, you'll forget that five ofthese songs are old, that all are translated into a language other thanher native tongue, and that she's a modest 19 years old. --Heidi Sherman ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Impressed!!!
Christina Aguilera has put together a solid sophomore effort in Mi Reflejo. She has demonstrated her superiority to the other teen pop divas of the day with the most outstanding vocals I've heard since a French Canadian by the name of Celine Dion came on the scene. This album works because of those vocals and because the songs are quite good. Though Christina is more suited for uptempo songs like Falsas Esperanzas and Ven Conmigo, her ballad singing is improving. Contigo en la distancia is as moving a ballad as I've heard. Where this album fails is in its attempt to take her successful English language songs and convert them into successful Spanish language songs. I don't need to hear Genie in a bottle or Reflection in Spanish. They're actually superior in English. What I would have preferred was an album of entirely original Spanish language material. Still, I suppose this was the commercial hook to get English speaking fans to buy the record. Ultimately, this is a must buy for fans of good singing. She, in my humble opinion, has already become one of the best singers in pop music around and should be regarded with more esteem and talent than her teen counterparts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Christina spicing up her life
It's been a long battle between Aguilera and Britney Spears and although Britney may have a stronger fan base, and some would have been disappointed when Brit didn't take home the Grammy, but with this album "Mi Reflejo", we see why Christina got that Grammy. Her voice is so strong and the fact that every song is in spanish certainly proves her acclectic tastes and strong vocals. Although not all of the 11 tracks are new material, it's still a fantastic, beautiful and must own CD. "Genio Atrapado" (Genie In A Bottle), "Una Mujer" (What A Girl Wants), "Por Simepre Tu" (I Turn To You), "Ven Conmigo (Come On Over) and "Mi Reflejo" (Reflection) are all the spanish takes on her english hits. "Falsas Esparanzas" is the first sound of new material and what a sound it is. Blazing horns and trumpets and Christina certainly proving she can live la vida loca, make this up-beat latin track a winner. "El Beso Del Final" and "Contigo En La Distancia" are two of the most beautiful ballads I have ever heard. "Cuando No Es Contigo" is my absolute favourite track. Mixing pop, latin and a slight touch of r/b, this is a unique sound and always opens up a surprise. The first verse is fairly restraint and as soon as the chorus hits, the trumpets are alight and we can hear "Falsas Esparanzas" touches, after the chorus it breaks into a hot bolero dance. The remaining tracks are ballads, but heart-stopping none the less. I recommend this album to anyone who likes pop and latin and any Aguilera fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Woman Can Do It All!
It's amazing how well Christina can sing in Spanish. I mean come on now, how many people could do that. She deserved every damn Latin Grammy she got. Remaking her singles from her debut were done better in Spanish then they were in English. Genio Atrapado sounds amazing. Falsas Esperanzas is one of my favorite dance songs on here. El Beso Del Final is my favorite ballad. Ven Conmigo & Una Mujer are tied as being my favorite songs overall. You go 'head girl!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hispanic side of Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera tells us there's no limit to her magic on Mi Reflejo. From the catchy beat of Genio Atrapado(Genie In A Bottle) to the fun dance tunes like Falsas Esperanzas and Una Mujer(What A Girl Wants). Sung intirly in Spanish, her latin cd is going in the same direction the debut went, pop music with some slight changes and extra "magic" like the beats on Una Mujer. Back in 2000 I gave her much credit but now shes got into rap and gangster styles of music. I give this song 4 stars because most of the ballads are weak except for Por Sempre Tu and Mi Reflejo. Overall, I'd really give this cd 4.8 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect even for those who don't speak Spanish
Christina Aguilera yet again prooved her staying power in the music industry by offering this latin CD. She is perfect for it because we can't say that she just rode on the Spanish explosion of 2000. She really is half latin so she could do this. Her vocals improved from her debut CD and is shown in the vocal acrobats that she performed on many tracks here, especially the ballads. Her range is nothing short of amazing and the songs were crafted beautifully with latin sounds resonating. She isn't a pop princess with this cd. Its about singing you heritage and who you are. She did that. She did a great job. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Evolución de su estilo

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
i ran across julieta venegas in a magazine article, and after sampling some songs from our favorite music-swapping utility, i knew immediately i needed more. so i bought both bueninveto and her debut, aquí.

and what can i say? bueninveto is a great album. more cutting-edge musically than aquí -- more guitar and less piano -- yet very approachable and extremely catchy. me lo ecanata!! favorite tracks include: "fe", "hoy no quiero", "voluntad" and "flor", pero todos los canciónes son muy fuerte.

and gringos fear not: if you don't speak spanish, you'll find youreself singing along nonetheless. a truly wonderful album.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT JOB JULIETA!!!!
I totally love this album. Julieta is the best song writer in the world. Her songs are so deep and by listening at her songs you can tell that she is a very smart person and that she is not an every day singer. I hope that when I grow up I can write songs as good as her. My favorite song in the album is OTRO SOL because it represents how I once felt. Also the last song,SUENO DE SOMBRAS, is a beautiful song. I don't think that another song writer can write a song like SUENO DE SOMBRAS. This is a must have album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Julieta the great!
This album is sooooo good!!
I've owned this album for over a year now and I still cannot tire of it! Julieta has a talent that is so amazing. Although I do not speak too much Spanish, it doesn't matter, because her music crosses language barriers. You can hear her emotion through the music. While her previous album, Aquí, was more ballad based, this album rocks! (Some of her influences while making this album were David Bowie and Prince.)
I've been fortunate enough to see her perform in Tijuana, Mexico and she is just as good live! Julieta is definately one artist to keep an eye on!!

5-0 out of 5 stars straight up good music
This is a strong CD - great from start to finish

The songs are unique and the album moves.

I still don't know Spanish, but this is one album that makes me wish I did..

It's evident fromt this CD that julieta is a very inventive artist - she has a sense for pop, but her music has substance.

I'm anticipating her next release. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gloria's second megahit album
Gloria Estefan experienced much success with her LET IT LOOSE album. In 1989,her second megahit album,CUTS BOTH WAYS,was released. The hits are HERE WE ARE,DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU,GET ON YOUR FEET and the title track. The latter does not appear on 1992's GREATEST HITS. Jon Secada made a few guest appearances on this album. The CD and cassette feature Spanish versions of OYE MI CANTO(Hear My Voice) and DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU. The latter's translation is SI VOY E PERDERTE. Imagine the Backstreet Boys doing their recording of the same title in Spanish(their song is completely different words and music). This is the last album to bear the artist as Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine. While on tour promoting this album,Gloria injured her back in a bus accident and successfully recovered. This happened in March 1990. Gloria and her band continued touring after the accident. Great album!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts Both Ways is the best Gloria Estefan album!
"Cuts Both Ways" released in 1989 by Gloria Estefan, is the best album by Gloria that you will find. CBW is Gloria's first solo album, after recording with the Miami Sound Machine for 12 years. It includes a perfect balance of ballads & up-tempo dance songs. It includes the number 1 hit "Don't Wanna Lose You", my all-time favorite song, "Get On Your Feet", plus Hot 100 hits "Here We Are", "Cuts Both Ways" & "Oye Mi Canto (Hear My Voice)". It also includes two spanish songs "Si Voy A Perderte (Dont Wanna Lose You-spanish version)" & "Oye Mi Canto (spanish version)". Other songs include "Ay, Ay, I", "Say", "Think About You Now", "Nothin' New" & "Your Love Is Bad For Me". Here are the best songs on the 12-track "Cuts Both Ways" album by Gloria Estefan: BALLADS: "Here We Are" "Think About You Now" "Cuts Both Ways" UP-TEMPO-DANCE SONGS: "Get On Your Feet" "Nothin' New" "Say" Other albums by Gloria Estefan I reccomend: "Into The Light" "Greatest Hits" "Eyes Of Innocence" "Abriendo Puertas" "Destiny" Actually, I reccomend them all, but those are the best. Cuts Both Ways is a must-have! For more information on Gloria Estefan visit The GLORIA ESTEFAN Pages Like No Others! at: http://members.aol.com/espritxl/GloriaEstefan/index.html END

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts Both Ways (1989) Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine
Seems as though, Gloria and the band were becoming more famous by the release of every album. 1989 brought their fourth album, Cuts Both Ways. Let me point out that Gloria did not go solo for this album. If you look on the side label of the CD, the title says Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine Cuts Both Ways. So, that means that this album is the band's fourth album, not Gloria's first album as a solo artist.

AY, AY, I
Not a favorite.

HERE WE ARE
The first single from the album. I have always loved this song. To this day, I always make sure that I listen to it, and when I do listen to it, I go back to when I was four years old, that was how old I was when this song and album came out. My God, that was 15 years ago.

SAY
Catchy.

THINK ABOUT YOU NOW
I am not sure if this was a single. But if it wasn't, then it should have been because this is a beautiful song.

NOTHIN' NEW
Not a favorite.

OYE MI CANTO (HERE MY VOICE) (English Version)
A pretty good dance song.

DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU NOW
The second single from the album. Not a favorite.

GET ON YOUR FEET
The third single from the album. Another song that I love and it is sending out a great message. Get on your feet and make your life count.

YOUR LOVE IS BAD FOR ME
Not a favorite.

CUTS BOTH WAYS
The fourth and final single from the album. This is another beautiful song, but I don't like the bridge of it.

OYE MI CANTO (HERE MY VOICE) (Spanish Version)
I like it better in English.

SI VOY A PERDERTE (DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU)
This is the Spanish version of Don't Wanna Lose You. I am not too fond of the English version, but I like it better than this version.

This was another one of the best albums of the 80s. Buy this album and you'll enjoy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars DON'T WANNA LOSE YOU!
For many Gloria Estefan came from a really dance fan base to a more pop-adult contemporary oriented audience. By her fourth album Gloria sounded more mature and experience. "Cuts Both Ways", is a peak album for Estefan, in name of fame, she was at her peak. No wonder this album is one of her best too. Don't Wanna Lose You" her 2nd #1 single is a classic track not only for Estefan but for the world of music, with a strong message and an amazing music background that made the song sound timeless. "Here We Are" why? this wasn't #1? is really strong and great. "Get On Your Feet" an uplifting song by miss Estefan that failed to reach the top 10, stopped at #11, but a great guitar background. "Oye Mi Canto" an extremely latin flavor song, sounds so espiritual and intimate, almos like a cry from the soul, great song, that didn't reach the top 40 unfairly, because is a great Estefan gem. "Cuts Both Ways" a third ballad it stopped before the top 40 too, but is no drop out, it's a keeper, great AC song. After all the mixture of refine latin beats, great lyrics, and a very rock album, "Cuts Both Ways" is one of the best albums of Gloria Estefan and band.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
I give it 4 stars because Gloria Estefan is talented. The only song I like here is "Dont Wanna Lose You now" but even then they overplayed it and I dont like it anymore. Most songs are just ballads which are good but too many you need to diversify a little. I suggest "Let It Loose" because the ballads and dance songs are better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Aventuras CD rocks( es el mejor)
Love & Hate is one of the best CDs Aventura has so far especially because Anthony is the one singing. Every song in this cd is so beautiful it makes u want to get up and dance and it is so relaxing and sad. Aventura sings about real problems. This cd really relates to the problems teens have now.
Please buy the cd u won't regred it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some nice romantic bachatas
The material doesn't have the depth of their previous, We Broke the Rules; and the self-promotion in the intro and elsewhere is a bit tiresome. Still, some nice bachata rhythms and vocals here such as in the standout song for me, Deja Vu, Hermanita, and others. It's worth buying if you like their style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aventura
I am a Bachata lover and I love Aventura. Their music and lyrics areawesome. I have been following the sucess since they came out when I use to live in NYC. All three of their albums are great. Their song reach the source of things that is the HEART of Music. I recommened their albums to anyone, if you are in love, been played, or are a player or just love your mom. They have songs related to all these subjects. They are The best

5-0 out of 5 stars They did it again!!!
Once again Aventura has done again!! They put together a great cd!!! Love and Hate is for all those haters out there that have something to say about Aventura. Don't hate bc they're doing good music. This cd is different from their previous cds. They have a mixture of merengue, reggae, and of course bachata. Romeo's (HOTTIE) and Henry's voices are GREAT and the sound put together by Lenny and Max is AWESOME. You can relate to all the songs on this and other Aventura cds. They've become a great hit around the world from their home country Dominican Republic, the states, and overseas. Keep up the good work Aventura!!!! And like they said in one of their songs, "Everyone make a line and follow the new leaders Aventura". They have become an example for all the new groups that have come out to the bachata scene. Their style is different from the usual bachata that we hear.

5-0 out of 5 stars we broke the rules

5-0 out of 5 stars Among the greatest
Dear Serrat fans,
I do love Serrat's art deeply. He has been one of my favourite singers and popular composers of all my lifetime, and perhaps the best. I have enjoyed immensely his music, his poetry (not always his), his Castillian diction when singing in Spanish, his consistent choice of good material. He has invariably been a most satisfying and even emotional experience.
HOWEVER, I think it is now time that his CDs come with a fair fill up. We are still being given as few as 9 titles per CD, where the current standard is close to 20. True, there is one Serrat CD in Catalonian that contains 34 titles, and this one contains 24, but we are talking here about very exceptional circumstances.
IT IS NOW TIME for someone in charge to organize Serrat's recordings in an inclusive, more or less complete anthology, close to chronological, so that we can at last have even better value for money when buying Serrat. No longer there is any justification whatsoever for 1/2 or 2/3 empty CDs.
As far as I am concerned, I am on strike. I am no longer buying any popular music CDs with less than 18 titles, preferably over 20, whatever the artist might be, and that includes my favourite Serrat!
Consider that a single CD can easily contain up to 79 minutes of music!
Please oblige.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is what u r looking for.
To buy all Serrat albums is not a waste of money, but if you can not afford to buy more than one...... THIS IS THE ONE. ... Read more

Many fine singers have come close, but Javier Solis is still regarded by many as the best bolero ranchera singer Mexico has ever produced. Since his death in 1966, there have been dozens of hit compilations. Luckily, this collection contains most of Solis's biggest hits: "Payaso," "Cenizas," "Sombras," "Media Vuelta," "Lloraras, Lloraras," and "Si Dios Me Quita la Vida." And while Solis got most of the credit, it's important to remember he worked with topflight producers, studio musicians, and, most critical of all, excellent song material from Rafael Ramirez ("Lloraras, Lloraras"), Luis Demetrio ("Si Dios Me Quita la Vida"), and Jose Alfredo Jimenez ("Media Vuelta"). But the combined power of vivid tearjerker songs enveloped in gorgeous mariachi arrangements is nothing without Solis's exquisite vocals and tough but compassionate stance. --Ramiro Burr ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful singin accompanied by the best musicians.
You'll be amazed at what a deceased singer can do and make you feel. Every song listened to in remastered, 20 bit HIGH definition quality can make you feel what the song is all about. After several albums as the featured singer in the Miami Sound Machine, Gloria Estefan finally stepped up to top billing on Let It Loose, and her coming-out party became a major success. The album features no fewer than four Top 10 singles, including the hot Latino club grooves of "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" and "1-2-3," and the sweet, affecting ballads "Anything for You" and "Can't Stay Away from You." By the time of the album's release in 1987, Estefan had not yet grown into the assured and charismatic singer she would become. And some of the songs here bear the cheesy production techniques of their time. Overall, however, Let It Loose shows an artist beginning to assert herself with considerable charm and élan. --Daniel Durchholz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Let It Loose (1987) Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine
In 1986, a year after the release of Primitive Love, Miami Sound Machine decided to do a name-change. They changed the name to Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine, since Gloria was the main focus of the band. By 1987, the band seemed to be even more famous than they thought, and only after releasing two albums: Eyes Of Innocence (1984) and Primitive Love (1985).

In 1987, Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine released their third album, Let It Loose. Although, it did well on the charts, I don't favor the album too much, but there are some songs from this album that I love.

BETCHA SAY THAT
This one of the songs that I favor from this album. It's lyrics are amazing and the sounds it really catchy.

LET IT LOOSE
A pretty good dance song.

CAN'T STAY AWAY FROM YOU
The first single from the band. Another one of my favorites. She can't stay away from her ex-boyfriend, while I can't get enough of this song.

GIVE IT UP
Not a favorite.

SURRENDER
Okay.

RHYTHM IS GONNA GET YOU
The second single from the album. Another incredible classic. The beat is amazing and the song will remain an undestroyable classic.

LOVE TOY
Okay.

I WANT YOU SO BAD
Not bad.

1-2-3
The third single from the album. Another undestroyable classic.

ANYTHING FOR YOU
The fourth and final single from the album. Not as great.

This is a pretty good album, but I don't favor it too much as I hoped I would, but it's still worth the money you're willing to pay.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the top albums of 1987 and 1988
Gloris Estefan rose to superstardom with LET IT LOOSE. I remember seeing the video for BETCHA SAY THAT. Big hits from the album are CAN'T STAY AWAY FROM YOU,RHYTHM IS GONNA GET YOU,ANYTHING FOR YOU and 1-2-3. I WANT YOU SO BAD is not to be confused with the same title on Heart's BAD ANIMALS album, released in 1987 just like this album. This is the next to last album bearing the artist Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine. This album was produced by Gloria's husband Emilio Estefan & The Jerks(obviously some buddies of his). Gloria's Epic Records labelmate Michael Jackson had a hit album in '87 also,BAD.

3-0 out of 5 stars LET IT LOOSE! IN A FREESTYLE WAY!
After the introduction of "Eyes Of Innocence" & the success of "Primitive Love", Gloria Estefan and Gang had a very difficult challenged to overcome, prove that "Conga" wasn't a stroke of luck!, and they're weren't just flavor of the month, "Let It Loose" prove many critics wrong, their third delivery outsold the first two LP, had 4 top ten singles + one top 40, and sold over 4 million copies. If that's not enough, "Anything" became their first #1 single in the Billboard 100. To listen to this album nowadays is difficult because, you have to understand, that the Miami Sound Machine tried to fit into the scene of pop music of the late 80's, with that brought to the attention, many songs, specially the ones that didn't became singles like "Give It Up, Surrender, Love Toy" sound extremely dated, with synth's and calypso beats, and really simple lyrics, that tried to alienated her latin spirit away. Surprisely the song that sound less dated than anyone in the Record is the most latin flavored one "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" and the message was clear, this song made to the top 5, and was the first single, and the strongest in the whole album. "Betcha You Say That" became the sad 2nd single, a song that failed the top 10, because it was simply boring, without innovation and pretty away from the style of Estefan, it was no mistake this was her most poppy AC attemp, but it failed, the third single "Can't Stay Away From You" her first ballad of this album to be release, is a nice easy goin track, but as many songs in this record sound dated and without strong feelings, the 4th single "Anything" their first #1, is a timeless Estefan classic, and it will sound in radio waves from years to come, because, it's reunites everything a song should have, a great hook, great lyrics, timeless music, and amazing memorable vocals, great message, great song. The last single "1-2-3" made it into the charts with a slightly different remix, this song is the most easy goin' and radio friendly of all, no wonder it was a hit, party stomper by those days, a none release song "I Want You So Bad" made recall Donna Summer's sexy songs, but it's no lie, that Gloria is more friendly, than sexy vixen, so with all that in mind, "Let It Loose" made it big with the four singles that became top 10. but the half of the album sound dated, this is a most have for any fan of Gloria or the late 80's, but if you're casual listener buy the Greatest Hits.

4-0 out of 5 stars I like this Album
I like this album because it features my favorite song "Can't Stay Away From You" and I also love "Rhythm is Gonna Get You". This album features many hits and is great to dance to and I love it. Gloria Estefan is a Latin Diva. I recommend this album.

3-0 out of 5 stars The original Latin Diva
Long before the latin invasion, Gloria Estefan was truly the one woman that crossed over.
Some pop efforts already broke in the Top 40, but this is the album that really started it all for her.
Gloria has written the # 1 hit ANYTHING FOR YOU and the sadness-tinged CAN'T STAY AWAY FROM YOU.
She rocked the dancefloors with RHYTHM IS GONNA GET YOU and 1,2,3.
She will prove you to be more than just a crossover artist when you listen to the sophisticated GIVE IT UP (great sax solo...).
Just for the record: this CD in europe was re-released in 1988 under the title ANYTHING FOR YOU, with a couple of extra bonus, the 12" versions of RHYTHM IS GONNA GET YOU and LET IT LOOSE. ... Read more

John Convertino and Joey Burns spend a good portion of their time playing with their friend Howe Gelb in the once prolific Giant Sand. But as contractual obligations--or, perhaps, contractual constraints--forced the band to lay off from time to time, it gave the backing boys plenty of time to pursue their own interests as Calexico. Much like Giant Sand, Calexico play a loose game, as likely to pursue Tom Waitsesque instrumentals (lots of shiny metallic percussion everywhere) as an abstract, countrified songwriting muse. The addition of horns and violin for the opening instrumental, "El Picador," and the distorted Spanish guitar of "Muleta" suggest that they've spent time well below Calexico's border. Twangy guitar riffs abound, and when pressed into tunes they highlight the duo's capacity for understated songwriting ("Ballad of Cable Hogue," "Service and Repair") that not so surprisingly sounds much like Giant Sand themselves. --Rob O'Connor ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Calexico unveil the statue of desert rock...
... and I bow to their superior talent and knowledge of the music they create. Joey Burns and John Convertino after their debut- the excellent "Black Light" album - prove that although they actually introduced a new style of music they keep developping it with the same success (artistically and not industrially)and thus create a group of fanatic listeners to whom I think that I belong. First of all, the name of the group describes with accuracy the style of music they play. CAlexico is a small town between California and Mexico. Both Joey Burns and John Convertino are born there and thus chose to name their group Calexico. Meta phorically the name of the group leads us to the conclusion that this band produce in their musical laboratories a mixture of accoustic rock with Mexican music. Furthermore, while being hypotonic and sad they rise up with their marvellous music even the most conservative person. So, in brief, both "The Black Light" and "Hot Rail" are two excellent pieces of jewellery in our record-library!

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly diverse and sonically pleasing.
While many reviewers will give comparisons of surf-music and Morricone influences, Burns and Convertino show greater depth and artistic push than was apparent when in Friends of Dean Martinez. I'm a fan of both and the divergence of style and musicianship is apparent on both bands' later works. The flavoring of the music and its divergent styles reminds me of both Sir Douglas Quintet and that of Los Lobos. Calexico has matured with each record pushing their sound further and defining a distinct sound that no longer relies on a "genre" but pushes instead the boundaries of border music and what it is. FODM have relied more heavily on the electronic influences creating a modern urban soundtrack. Calexico digs deeper and finds the dust on the small towns and back roads. Its like the difference between Santa Fe and Taos, NM. They have similar roots but the modern influences have been absorbed diffently creating unique interpretations of the Southwest and its parched landscapes. Calexico delivers on all fronts and as Burns and Convertino become more comfortable with their songwriting things can only get better.

2-0 out of 5 stars El Mariachi
For those who like Ennio Morricone and western spaghettis, Calexico may be an interesting band worth checking out. Their southern sound is cool, stylish and moody enough to deserve a listen. However, "Hot Rail" isn`t a great record, as it is too long, repetitive and not very diverse. There are some good songs to be found here, like "The Ballad of Cable Hogue" or "Service and Repair", but the album is mostly a collection of instrumental soundscapes and part of them are filler material. As mildly pleasant background music it`s alright, though it doesn`t have much more to offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars is "Cactus Rock" a genre? If so, Calexico's the King
This CD rocks. It opens up with a sweeping, cinematic trumpet that dumps you in the Sonoran Desert where it's 110 degrees and you're thirsty as hell, wearing a long-sleeved shirt and about to go hit the nearest hacienda for some watermelon cooler and tequila. Yeah, it's that vivid. Hot Rail continually pokes and prods the boundaries of indie-rock/alt-country, pulling in a healthy dose of mexican balladry, old-time GitAlong country and even French rap/spoken word to create what could be the perfect soundtrack for a Steven Soderbergh movie yet to be made. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Listening
I have had this CD for over a year, my daughter sent it for Christmas. At first I did think it a little gimmicky. I have listened several times and have changed my opinion. It is well paced and the numbers, while diverse, blend well. It is something I usually play at least twice when in a popular music listening mood. I like this CD well enough to look for more from these guys. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For True Fans...
As a big fan of Carlos Vives, I will admit this is not his greatest CD. I still think "Classicos de la Provincia" will forever be his best recording. However, if you are a true fan, this CD is a must. He continues to improve on his writing skills, both musically and lyrically. From the opening song "Dejame Entrar" he displays his talent for a beautiful, yet simple lyric. Other great songs are "Carito" (showing his english skills), and my personal favorites "Amor Latino" and "Santa Elegia". All in all, this is a really good CD. I recommend it to anyone who likes Carlos or vallenato.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exhuberant, Fresh and Multi-layered
"Dejame Entrar," Carlos Vives' double Grammy Winning latest is a latin music lover's dream album...melodic, percussive and fun from start to finish. The title track stands as one of his best ever, and the singer delivers a heartfelt lyric that in lesser hands might sound silly or dull. As good as that song is, other tracks are equally solid - especially "Carito" - which Vives recently performed at the Latin Grammys (with the stop-traffic-stunning Rosalyn Sanchez and his own young son. Its bilingual schoolboy-crush lyrics capture every young boy's classroom antics at one time or another, and the fusion of languages makes it accessible to ANY listener. Vives' superb vallenato style is on display throughout and I bet the artist will single-handedly put this unique blend of rhythms and substance on the map for the entire world to dance along to. Colombia - the country - has produced some of the best Latin music in recent years, with Juanes, Shakira and Los Tri-o breaking through to global audiences. Like those artists, Vives is a superstar with a commanding presence that defies his down-home demeanor. Buy this album and then delve into the artist's past releases - this is a bona fide top-tier winner all the way through!

4-0 out of 5 stars carlos vives
This music is very adictive. I can't stop listening to it. I have put the cd on my alarm clock and it is wonderful to wake up to.
Even if you are not a fan of latin music you should try Carlos Vives and you might become one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This cd is awesome. I like every song on it because they are all so good. I reccomend this cd even to people who don't speak spanish because you can dance to it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting album-another aspect of Carlos Vives
Admittedly if I had reviewed this album a year ago when I first purchased it, it would not have scored so high in the ranking because I was not attracted to this music at all and as a result I neglected to listen to the album for a year. I recently played it again to see if my opinion had changed and believe me my reception was completely different. This is a great album and although it has typical Carlos Vives nuances the rhythms are very Caribbean and that of Carlos'modern vallenato. I would say this album is a mellower version of his previous production "El amor de mi tierra" which I think is a tremendous one no doubt. This one offers a variety of musical rhythms and I don't know how he managed it but the influence of many genres of music can be heard throughout the album, Afro beats, rock, son, cumbia all have been well blended into Carlos' unique modern vallenato style. In a nutshell, if you have some previous music from Carlos Vives and if you like afro-Caribbean rhythms this production will catch your attention. It's definitely for listeners and dancers of vallenato and for those who can appreciate his unique style. I am glad I gave this album a second chance. ... Read more

Ruben Blades has long been a Latin music superstar, though this album confirms suspicions he may be feeling constrained by the expectations of the genre. While others have tried their hand at the transcultural "world music" soufflé Blades masterfully whips up here, few have achieved the inviting, warm results the Panamanian vet delivers on Mundo. But Blades wisely never loses sight that however far his musical curiosity takes him, he can still only filter the results through the prism of his own experience and traditions. Thus, there's an elegantly deceptive sense of the organic here, whether covering the Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays anthem "First Circle" (which showcases Brazil's Boca Livre and Costa Rica's Editus) or the traditional "Danny Boy" (which seamlessly fuses Celtic and Afro-Cuban influences with help from Lupa Mason and her soaring soprano). Blades also pays tribute to Brazilian songwriter Gilberto Gil with the glorious harmonies of "Consideración" (a passionate reworking of Gil's "Oriente") and infuses the Malian traditional "Jiri Son Bali" with mambo rhythms. But the album's most subtle cocktails issue from Blades' originals, from the gypsy homages "Parao" and "Bochinches" (the latter fueled by savory, Havana-meets-Tangier flourishes) to the reflective, jazzy "Ella" and "La Ruta," and the joyous Uilleann pipe-tinged "Sebastian" and the romping "A San Patricio." These are tracks illuminated by Blades' passionate humanism, a compelling musical argument that our cultural differences should only be the seasoning for our common dreams. –-Jerry McCulley ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A most beautiful and seamless blend of styles and lyrics
Last night, as Ruben Blades' most recent work, "Mundo" was awarded a Grammy for best world music album, I thought the Panamenian superstar took a firm step toward the space that is currently occupied by the likes of Peter Gabriel, Sting and Jean-Michel Jarre: the space of those that transcend geographical barriers, and blend styles in their music in such a way, that creates a new flavor out of existing rhythms and traditions. Blades' "Mundo" does just that in a magical way. Normally, when you hear world music, you think of pouring a bit of african and a bit of celt, mix it in a "production" pot, serve and eat "while hot" (well, maybe not quite... but you get the picture... I hope!) Ruben, with the collaboration of a number of other international artists such as his Costa Rican ensemble from his "Tiempos" album, Editus, Brazil's Boca Livre and soprano Lupa Mason, manages to blend in a seamless and exquisite way disparate styles such as celtic, afro-cuban, brazilian, middle eastern, "hardcore" flamenco, jazz. It is hard to pick a song from the album. They all stand out in their own particular way: the production, the lyrics... very touching all the way through; though the most touching moment is by far the introduction and interpretation of "Danny Boy" dedicated to those who lost their lives in 9/11 and their families. As usual, Ruben comes forward with an album filled with passion, latin vibes and a LOT of humanity. Gracias, Ruben!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every record it's a entire surprise
Ruben Blades show new rhythms in his third album called "Mundo". If you wonder why I said third, it's because I think Ruben started a new career after released "La rosa de los vientos" based on Panamanian music and, after that, his first album with Editus Ensemble "Tiempos", which introduces you to this band who had my respect because they make terrific music joined with a big singer like Blades. To me, Mundo it's more deep than Tiempos, because you can find music from different countries, thanks to the colaboration of musicians like Boca Livre from Brazil, Eric Rigler, Marc Quiñones from Puerto Rico, De boca en boca from Argentina and the amazing vocals of Luba Mason. You can listen celtic, african, spanish, cuban music, etc, with typical instruments mixed between them, creating a style never listen, only presented by a master of the music like Ruben Blades and of course Editus. The best songs: Sebastian, Estampa, Ella, Danny Boy, Como nosotros. It's not a salsa album as you saw in others reviews. It's the following step of Ruben's experiments with the music created in our Mundo. When we can see a Salsa album?. Who knows, but I wait the necessary time until he still presents excellent albums like the last three.

5-0 out of 5 stars The album Sting, Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon have dreamt...
...of making, but never been able to. This is just an unbelievable album...You will probably have not heard anything like it. Salsa with bagpipes, flamenco guitars and Andean flutes, among others. What Ruben started out on Tiempos was definitely accomplished here. Standouts here are Sebastian, Parao, and Primogenio, although, this album just makes perfect sense and flow, even through all the different instruments. I always wondered how this album would sound live. Luckily, Ruben came to DC last year, where I saw him, and it was even better...This is a great album, and it is a travesty that people are still ripping on him for not "playing salsa". If salsa sounded like Mundo, I would throw out all my other music. Keep it up Ruben, you've found it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Deserving of the Grammy
Ruben Blades does it again. A masterwork in every respect. Truly collaborative. Musically progressive. Standout musicianship. And very touching.

There's no point in my going over the individual songs of the tapestry woven here. Other reviewers already have. Please just do yourself a favor and buy this album and appreciate it for the work of art that it so clearly is.

Verdaderamente magnífico en cada respecto.

Bravo Ruben! Mas! Mas!

5-0 out of 5 stars Music for people of the world
What an awesome CD. I am very impressed by Mr. Blades production of "Mundo", it is more than an ordinary Salsa CD, it is Music for the world. I loved all of the songs especially "Primogenio"
and "Jiri Son Bali" bringing back the old school roots of Latin New York combined with the sounds of the Scottish Highlands. The dedication to the victims of the 9/11 tragedy (Danny Boy) also touched me.
I have to say, this was one of Ruben Blades' best productions.
I highly recommend this cd. This is music for the people of the world. ACHE. ... Read more

Lila Downs's sophomore U.S. release sees her take a much more folkloric tack than her debut, delving into the mystical codices of the Mexican Mixtec natives (her ancestry on her mother's side)--not that the entire album is made up of ancestral songs. There's also "Nueve Viento," a bolero son as rich and satisfying as anything to come out of Buena Vista Social Club. But the heart of this album beats strongest when it's barest, making the stark "Yunu Yucu Ninu" (which she performed differently on her debut) into an eerie delight. Blessed with a remarkable voice, operatic training, and jazz chops, Downs can cover a lot of territory. "Tres Pedernal" recalls the husky Tropicalia of Gal Costa. With its look at native culture and lore, this is a record that delves much deeper than Mexican pop, marking Downs as a serious singer of talent and depth. --Chris Nickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to roots
To the anonymous music fan from Seattle....shame on you. You have no idea what traditional Mexican music is...you must be one of those people that think burritos & "combinations" are traditional Mexican cuisine and that waltzes performed by misguided sell out mariachi bands are traditional Mexican music. Just as there is infinitely more to Mexican cuisine than is available in the U.S., consciousness about Mexican music is very superficial. Are southern gospel tunes or appalachian jigs any less American than Glenn Miller or Elvis Presley just because they were never discovered by mainstream audiences? While it is true that Lila fuses foreign influences with indigenous doesn't invalidate it...because Mexico's essence is one of mestizaje (fusion...racial, idiomatic, visual, and musical).

5-0 out of 5 stars exotic and intense musical experience
I bought this album on the recommendation of Amazon readers. It turned out to be much more than I had hoped. Ms. Downs is willing and able to do more with her voice than I have heard from almost any singer anywhere. Her voice is not operatic but she has a HUGE range, and she uses it to invoke moods to match the songs she sings. The expressiveness of this album is so intense that it is impossible (or perhaps shameful) to use it as background music. In addition to songs in Spanish, Ms. Downs sings a number of songs written in Mixtec, Zapotec and Nahuatl languages. Some of them express their cosmology; others are about living life as a person with troubles. All are beautiful, under the sure and elegant hand of this amazing lady of music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not quite what I was looking for....
I was looking for a traditional Mexican music. What I got was more of Spanish/new age/earthy album. Don't get me wrong...it is really nice and Lila has quite a vocal range with a beautiful voice. She is also very expressive. Similar to Enya, with a Spanish/Indian feel to it. It is nice quiet background music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mixtec Mexican Diva
Like a mystical Mexican goddess beckoning me I picked this CD up by instinct as I was drawn to it. Was it Frida Kahlo reincarnated or the ancient ones calling? Who knows, I'm just glad I bought it. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn about this marvelous artist, Lila Downs, a Mexican diva with roots and upbringing on both sides of the Rio Grande. Her musical sensibilities come from formal opera training and an education in the US as she was born to a Oaxacan mother and a father from the United States. Lila Downs is unquestionably one of the artists to watch as she matures. This her sophmore effort is a masterpiece, shrouded in mysticism from ancient codices, Lila delivers interpretations that are exquisite manifestations of her being. Her voice trainng has allowed her to sing with unlimited range and depth, a true diva. Her music is contemporary folkloric songs that are performed in various indigenous languages of Mexico that touch a deep cord in one's soul. To listen to her sing in any language is delightful but the when she does in Mixtec it is something very special, ethereal, otherworldly, a communique from her ancestors, poetry from long gone souls for the living to learn from. Don't believe me? Take a listen to the sampler version of "Yunu Yuca Ninu" and listen to Lila speak softly to your soul. She wrote the music for this song about the immigrants who leave Oaxaca every year, some to never return, based on a poem. She performed this song on her first US release also but differently. Listening to this CD borders on a mystical experience, it is undefineable, something that can only be experienced. It is as though it is not neccessary to read the booklet that has all the translations, the music speaks in words that connect straight to your soul.I suppose the lyrics will further illustrate the concepts, I just haven't bothered yet. Lila Downs, the Mexican diva deliveres her message eloquently with jazzy backgrounds that includes melodic harmonica, guitar, harp, flute, marimba, sax and soft percussion that includes clay pots and drums that do not distract but further accentuates her marvelous voice. Her range fluctuates to the point where it is hard to believe it is the same singer. That one person can do so many things with their voice is a marvel, and to be able to annunciate in so many different languages is something very special. She takes on a husky voice in the opening Zapotec song, "Simuna" but slightly transforms her voice halfway through giving hints of her operatic talents. On "Nuevo Viento" she further displays her capabilities as she opens up further displaying talents that don't come along very often. "Arenita Azul" is the only song that has a Caribbean feel to it, she sounds like a young Celia Cruz. "La Iguana" is a happy huapango that illustrates the things Lila can do with her voice as she assumes one of her many different sounds. She is magical. About as far away from pop as you can get this CD fits into the "World music" category, charting an unwritten path. Her talent is extraordinary, she composed seven of the tracks and of course sings in four languages. The accopanying booklet is a prize as there are all the lyrics written in original language, English and Spanish. Mixtec images from various codex's were borrowed and are colorfully reproduced. This from my perspective should especially appeal to those who like anthropolgy as Lila's music is delves deep into her Mixteca roots. Lila had descended from the clouds in the mountains of Oaxaca to share her ethnic vision that comes from the duality of her being. Lila Downs is a Mexican diva for the new millennium, she is very special, she speaks directly to one's soul, from deep within her heart she touches you. Buy this CD for an experience that comes from the ancient codices of Mexico.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous album by an equally compelling perfomer
Lila Downs is a Mexican artist who delivers her music with such intensity, soul and passion that you cannot remain unmoved. On the concert stage she has a grand presence and in recording, her music captures the very essence of sublime. ... Read more
