Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The follow-up to Ozomatli's 1998 eponymous debut, Embrace the Chaos builds on the band's proven strengths: a masterful command of a palette of musical styles, a firm commitment to social activism, and an unending devotion to the power of rhythm. Like the L.A. landscape from which the group emerged, Ozo's music is a polyglot of cultures, whether it's the Puerto Rican salsa of "Dos Cosas Ciertas," the Mardi Gras funk of "1, 2, 3, 4," the Brazilian batucada beat of "Suenos en Realidad," or the Cuban son influence on "Timido." The result is a gorgeously diverse sound that changes from song to song without seeming disjointed or random. Rap fans may be disappointed to note that Jurassic 5's Chali 2na and Cut Chemist are no longer with the group, but the album is hardly suffering from a dearth of hip-hop; in-house rapper Kanetic Source and DJ Spinobi offer their talents, while notable cameos are provided by De La Soul ("1, 2, 3, 4"), Medusa ("Vocal Artillery"), and Common ("Embrace the Chaos"). Even though the album is capped at an efficient 11 songs, it doesn't come up short. With so much different music represented, Embrace the Chaos is like a dozen albums fused into one. --Oliver Wang ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece-by my standards.
This album is truly good, in fact, it is remarkably good. I first heard Ozomatli in the movie "Never Been Kissed" and didn't think they were any different than the other latin performers out there. Well, when I'm wrong, I'm wrong. This album was more than I expected it to be. An undeniably fun, foot-tapping mixture of different music genres(hip-hop,latin,jazz, etc) that is not only refreshing but also a bit needed in the world of music. I feel that Ozomatli is one the better bands out there since they incorporate different styles into their music. This group is an entourage of distinct cultures reflecting how each using their own creative style can combine to make something so intensely well. Now to talk about the album, clearly all of the tracks are brilliant in their own way. "Pa Lante", "Guerrillero" and "Timido" are upbeat high-paced latin tracks that make you just want to get up and dance. Of course there is the inclusive hip-hop beats on such tracks as "Vocal Artillery" and "Lo Que Dice" which for some reason, on this album, does not seem out of place when fused with latin rhythms. All in all, a great album that almost anyone regardless of their musical taste can enjoy. Too bad we can't hear stuff like this playing on mainstream radio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Embrace the Chaos
No other band so far, in my opinion, accomplishes what Ozomatli does on their album Embrace the Chaos. Its definitely a great follow up to their debut album. Something very noticeable to me was how much OZO has improved their instrumental skills since the first album. The first track "Pa Lante" is vigorous! The bouncy, fun, energetic rhythms get you going from the start! What I love about OZO is their ability to mesh Latin rhythms and off tha hook hip hop beats like they did in their song "Lo Que Dice", Cut Chemist starts things off with a traditional Spanish vocal track laid over a fat hip-hop beat! Its AMAZING! Not to mention the great collabos on this album with Black Eyed Peas' Medusa and will.i.am, Jurassic 5's Cut Chemist, MC Kanetic Source, Los Lobos' Steve Berlin and David Hidalgo....you cant go wrong with this cd! Two of my fav tracks are "Pa Lente" and "1234" they are fun tracks that showcase the album's overall upbeat sensation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baltimore Hons rocks to Ozomatli
I have been listening to this CD everyday for a year! Just saw them in concert April 27 04 and they were fantastic. They jumped into the crowd and played right next to us for the last 30 min. Very rarely do you hear a group who's live performance is exactly the quality of the CD. You won't need to understand Spanish to groove to the heated explicit lyrics. Even a gringa can learn rhythm with this CD. Ozomatli played some songs from the new CD being released in June. I was on line today to see if i could pre-order it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ozomatli excels! online concert, too...
This album is fantastic. This group is excellent. You know this album rocks, so here is a tip! They recently played a really small, initimate concert at The Expression Center for New Media in the Bay Area and it is online ...
I love Ozo and if you do, too, you'll be stoked on this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maximum Surprise
Having seen this group on the Latin Grammy awards perform "Dos Cosas Ciertas" and knowing nothing else about them, I bought the CD. I was very surprised to hear two of my favorite hip-hop artists on some tracks, especially the title track performed with Common! I love groups like Ozomatli and Groove Collective for their efforts at fusion. Their melange of latin and hip-hop and jazz reflects the diversity of urban America today. What Ozomatli should do now is carry their social activism further in their music. Play very loud! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clasicos y varias sorpresas - Classics and various surprises

To listen to Mecano, either for their exquisite arrangements or their introspective and humane lyrics, is always a delight. José Maria and Nacho have created new songs that talk about the Post-modernity in Spain and Latinamerica, and whic Ana's voice renders them divine. I cannot tire from hearing the new songs and to find new hidden colors in their old songs. Note that 'Stereosexual' and 'Corazon a corazon' are destined to become classics that touch upon serious themes without being trivial. This is a record to say Goodbye to the old millenium, and welcome the new one. I am hoping that Ana, Jose and Nacho will give usmore in the future, either solo or with the magic of the group.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, diverse, meaningful pop/rock music
"Ana | José | Nacho" brings together some of the best Mecano songs. That's saying a lot when one considers how important Mecano has been to the pop scene in Spain and Latin America, and by extension the global pop scene. Mecano ruled the charts throughout the 80s, and they began the next decade with another incredible album. Mecano is without a doubt the best band to have been produced on the Iberian peninsula, and an easy contender for best Spanish-language act ever...dare I say European musical act?

The history of the band aside, this album is a magnificent piece of art. Of the older pieces, my absolute favorites include: "Aire" (and this is a superior version of the song), "Un año más, "Naturaleza muerta," "Dalí," "Me cuesta tanto olvidarte," "La fuerza del destino," "Una Rosa es una Rosa," "El uno, el dos y el tres," "Barco a Venus" (also the best version of the song), "Mujer contra mujer," and "Me colé en una fiesta."

The new songs are also great pieces. Perhaps not the absolute best they have made, but they do represent Mecano's ability to churn out masterpieces (here's looking at La oreja de Van Gogh's upstarts). "Otro muerto" and "El club de los humildes" are both awesome pieces in themselves, while "Stereosexual" is an excellently sarcastic take on the same theme covered by "Mujer contra mujer" (although the former also tackles modern-day sexual ambiguity to the degree few other bands have done--Garbage's "Androgyny" is another excellent example).

My personal favorite is "Hijo de la luna," far and away one of the most beautiful, meditative pop pieces ever created. There's a reason classical crossover star Sarah Brightman, opera singer Montserrat Caballé, Greek tenor Mario Frangoulis, European Idol singers, and countless others love this song. Listen to "Hijo de la luna" and become enchanted.

(While you're at it, listen to the whole CD...it is the best compilation of one of the greatest bands in the history of pop music).

5-0 out of 5 stars CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT!!!
This two CD collection is indispensable for the TRUE Mecano fans...It has all of the songs I remember hearing in my adolescent years; obviously some songs had to be left out, but the ones that are included are simply magnificent; Hijo de la Luna, Cruz de navajas,el 7 de Septiembre, No es serio este cementerio, but most of all, Naturaleza Muerta are to be enjoyed with all the senses; on that last song, one could almost taste the ocean's water...as is the case with Hawaii Bombay. This collection will certainly bring memories of when and where you were, exactly at the moment you heard each of these songs for the first time, it's that GOOD!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Should've been better - Debió haber sido mejor
This 2 CD collection of Mecano's greatest hits is a great way for new fans to get to know the band, but I find it a tad dissapointing for actual fans. It's very hard for a compilation like this one to actually include all of the fans favorites, they're usually more what the artist and/or the label think should be included. This case is no exception. While most of their best songs are in here, most of their earlier work was left out -- granted, the band acheived its greatness in its last four albums, but still, they should have included more tracks from 'Mecano' and '¿Dónde está el país de las hadas?'. Also, the new tracks are a mixed bag, while some are great ('Cuerpo y corazón', 'El club de los humildes' and 'Stereosexual') the rest are forgettable. Still, Mecano's music can not be denied, so you should buy this CD, otherwise, your collection will be incomplete.

--

... Read more

Dominican singer, composer, and bandleader Juan Luis Guerra is one of the few true innovators in contemporary Latin music. He created a revolution when he reinvented traditional merengue with smart, poetic lyrics, jazz harmonies, and higher production values. In Bachata Rosa he similarly updated the lowly bachata, the rural, Dominican down-home version of the romantic ballad. Songs such as "Estrellitas y Duendes (Little Stars and Goblins)," "Como Abeja al Panal (Like a Bee to the Beehive)," "Burbujas de Amor (Love Bubbles)," and the title track revisit the old love themes with rare grace and subtle poetic flair. Meanwhile "Rosalia," "Cartas de Amor," and "A Pedir Su Mano" (in which Guerra hints at the connections between Dominican and African music which he pursued in subsequent albums) provide superb dance floor tracks. The result was a commercial and artistic success and with good reason. --Fernando Gonzalez ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius work of music: dance, sing and fall in love to it
It is not easy for an album to garner so many awards and recognition, but Juan Luis Guerra's 'Bachata Rosa' changed Latin music so much that it deserves every single one of them.

If you only considered that the album is 100% danceable with its catchy tunes ("Rosalia," "Carta De Amor," "A Pedir Su Mano," "La Bilirrubina"), its clever lyrics that still make songs easy to sing along and be merry or fall in love to (such as the case with "Como Abeja Al Panal", "Estrelliatas Y Duendes", "Burbujas De Amor" and the title track), you could say that the album is brilliant already.

But if you go beyond that, and realize that the album brought about a transformation to Merengue and Latin music at large, by bringing Bachata (a sort of tropical ballad) to the forefront of collective awareness, you start to realize that the giant from Dominican Republic (Juan Luis Guerra, in case you're wondering) is no average musician, but close to a musical genius. 'Bachata Rosa' stops being your album of typical Merengue music, and takes on a level of brilliance that is not common.

Do yourself a favor, and begin your Juan Luis Guerra collection here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Like another glowing album of Guerra's - "Arieto" - "Batacha Rosa" is a slice of pure genius from the Dominican Republic's Simon-Garfunkle-Lennon-McCartney singer-songwriter extraordinaire. A brilliant stylist, composer and vocalist, Guerra delivers some of his most passionate tracks and warmest moments on record, including the incandescent "Burbujas De Amor" - a story about fish in love that transcends its humor to become a soaring love song, and "Como Abeja Al Panal" - a song about unrequited passions with an unforgettable hook. At once thought-provoking and melodious, "Batacha Rosa" is yet another chapter in this brilliant stylists' repertoire, and perhaps overall, his very best album. As with other Guerra 440 albums, this is a must have collection of songs that will touch your heart, warm your soul, and deliver countless pleasures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Catchy tunes, witty lyrics, great arrangements ¿ a must-have
Juan Luis Guerra and his group 440 were one of the biggest acts in Latin music throughout the nineties. Listen to this album and you'll understand why. It's little short of perfect. Juan Luis is a native of the Dominican Republic but honed his musical skills at Berklee and Columbia. He achieves a great mix of local energy and authenticity with polished accessibility.

The lyrics are infinitely imaginative. Okay they're in Spanish, but they handsomely reward a little dictionary work and they're a great way to learn the language. The catchy Bilirrubina hilariously hijacks a bunch of medical terminology to describe feverish feelings of unrequited love, while Burbujas de Amor (Bubbles of Love) sketches some outrageous but touching imagery - "I wish I were a fish . so I could blow bubbles of love wherever you want."

The tunes on Bachata Rosa are all excellent, from a variety of upbeat danceables to some sweet, poetic ballads. The arrangements are no less inventive than the lyrics - all that study certainly paid off.

If you like contemporary Latin music, then you're virtually guaranteed to like this one. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can't hear it enough
I love this CD. It's all great dance music. Good lyrics & fun music

5-0 out of 5 stars the Best Latin Album EVER!!!!
This album is the greatest latin album that I have ever listened too. It has a bit of something for every latin lover out there. My personal favouites are "Burbujas de Amor" and "Rosalia". Spanish rock singer Miguel Bose ventures into electronica/dance territory on this 14-track collection, which also comes with a DVD of 13 videos. He co-wrote all the tracks with Antonio Cortes. Bose blends the Human League's synth-pop melodies with Depeche Mode's cold detachment, especially on songs like "Hey Max," whose bilingual lyrics describe a wierd aloofness of the soul. As a singer, Bose's raspy vocals evoke a world weariness, especially on the tunes about desolation and solitude. It fits in well with the CD's heavy emphasis on synthesizers and programming. But Bose gets romantic on "Celeste Amor," where he seeks an understanding beyond the flesh. --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars me sorprendio este CD

5-0 out of 5 stars Miguel Bose has outdone himself once again.
Miguel Bosé again has delivered an outstanding production. He still is a talent ahead of his time."Velvetina" tells it like it is, quite elegantly. When you listen to it, really listen, and then, you will see it. You will feel the rush.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's really 3 1/2 stars.
After releasing an album with a symphonic orchestra (Por Vos Muero), Miguel Bose follows it up as only he can: with an electronica record.Although he stated that it would be a dance album, it's really not. The only real dance tunes are Hey Max and Ella Dijo No.This is quite an ambitious project, with lyrics in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and (I believe) some Italian as well...all within 1 song (Ojala, Ojala). It's not Bose's best album, but it's solid, and definitely much better than what's out there.
Highlight tracks (at least for me): Celeste Amor (from where the name of the album comes out), Paro el Horizonte (sounds great in concert, I saw him recently in Guatemala), Verde Canalla and May Day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful...as usual!!!
I could write a lot about this new album from Miguel Bose. However, I will resume my opinion in just these few words: elegant, modern and simply delightful!!!...As usual!

Get this version (with the DVD). All of the videos are excellent!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This proposal is not that radical
In the world of electronic music Bose's proposal is not that radical. I was expecting something more extreme. The music and songs in Velvetina are very well done but reminds me the work of Bjork in the late 80's. As always Miguel demonstrated that his music is a jewel in the world of commercial music and I feel that deep inside his heart he would like to do something really different dedicated to those who appreciate more independent non commercial like music. I rated velvetina with five stars because his perseverance, dedication and profesionalism. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tango a la Julio
Tango is wonderful earthy music with lots of sharp edges and angles. If you're a tango purist, you should have known better than to look to Julio Iglesias to provide that...stick with Gardel or Piazzolla. You might as well find fault with a nightengale because it's not a hawk.

Julio has delivered exactly what one would expect here...tango with the rough edges filed down and buffed smooth. To his fans this CD is probably an "improvement" on tango. It's lush...it's lovely...it's typically Julio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soft, luxurious pop
If you are looking for classically perfect Tango, go elsewhere. However, if you want a lush, pop music interpretation-this is a fine CD. The usual smooth Julio approach is emphasized, and for fans the result is a CD the sounds sufficiently like Julio to be recognizable but with the sounds of an exciting and different idiom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!!
Not your heavy-duty tango from down Argentine way, but S-M-O-O-T-H relaxay-voo, cocktail-lounge tango that just melts and flows all over you. This is one of Julio's best. Starts with "Hernando's Hideaway" and gets better as it goes. Julio sure is more cool than Enrico, but then again, who isn't?? As the master himself would say:"Oink a'la plop-plop, phooey, phooey and fizzee!!!" And I agree....

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Tangos From Iglesias...But It's Not Gardel!!!
I absolutely adore tango and no one does it better than the brilliant, and charismatic, Carlos Gardel. That said, or opined, I will now move on to Julio Iglesias and "Tango." Although this collection is not typical Iglesias, he does make music that works...and it is smooth! He brings his own style of Julio to the tango, and the combination is magical. He sings with passion and drama, although not with the eroticism, edge, nor the Argentinean flavor of Gardel. The selections in this collections are perfect to showcase Sr. Iglesias' talent, and to make the listener want to get up and dance.

Some of my favorite cuts are: "A Media Luz," (that I find myself humming at the oddest moments), the nostalgic "Volver," and "Adios Pampa Mia," and the soulful " Caminito," and "Yira...Yira." This is a a wonderful collection for Iglesias fans and all non-purists who love tango.

3-0 out of 5 stars Who knew?
Dance teachers spend lots of time agonizing over appropriate tempo tangos. No, seriously, we really do. A great tango isn't always a great choice for dancing. Let's face it: Argentine Tangos, American Tangos, and International-style Tangos are not all measured the same way, or danced anywhere close to the same style or technique (well they are, but dancers know what I mean). This is one of those surprisingly useful CDs to a lover of American Tango. Timed right and oh my gosh not boring music. Julio is about passionate interpretations of these tango standards, and the depth of emotion slows the tempo a little to make this great stuff for American dancers (again, who knew?). The bonus is it's all upbeat, friendly material that will not snooze students or other listeners. There's a lot of strict tempo CDs out there that should be burned as a public service to the art of tango and dancing in general. I should state immediately that not every track is a good dance selection, but I use at least five of these for classes. That's a windfall for Tango. Argentine enthuiasts need look elsewhere, like the Tango Project, maybe. There's a few tracks on here with lots of slow places and set-ups for choreography. Worth putting in the Tango Collection... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Originals you may have heard elsewhere
What do such diverse entertainers as Placido Domingo, Chavela Vargas, Pedro Infante, Luis Miguel, Julio Iglesias, Helmutt Lotti, Rocio Banquells, Javier Solis, Nat King Cole, Rocio Durcal ,Lucho Gatica, Jorge Negrete, Lola Beltran, Caetano Veloso and countless trios and mariachi groups have in common? They have all recorded Augustin Lara compositions. Known as el "El Flaco de Oro," Agustin Lara is one of the Mexico's most prolific composers with some 600 compostions to his credit!! If you listen to Latin music, especially boleros, you have probably heard a Lara composition. Some of his more famous and interpreted songs are "Amor de Mis Amores," "Solamente Una Vez," "Veracruz," "Granada," Noche de Ronda," " Farolito," "Aventura," "Mujer," "La Cumbancha," "Pobre De Mi," and his ode to one of his four wives, old time film actress and goddess, Maria (La Dona) Felix , entitled "Maria Bonita." All of the mentioned songs are featured here and taken from the original LP recordings by Lara made between 1954 and 1961. Besides being a composer he was an acomplished pianist(worked in a bordelo at age 13, listen to the biographic "Imposible")) and a singer. This double disc features the voice and piano of Lara as he originally intended the songs to sound l . A wise person once told me the original composers know best how a song should sound:). There are a variety of styles by Lara but mostly tango, pasodoble and bolero music is featured. Although the music is old it still maintains a cosmopolitan flair that is classic. The piano work of Lara is prominent throughout although the disc and also features a conjunto he recorded with. Most of the songs have a melancholy feel and if you look at the picture of Lara, with his ever present cigarette dangling from his lip, it pretty much sums up the feeling. It is odd but the melancholy feeling is not really sad but more nostalgic, a different time, a different place; it's a colorful black and white world with shades of grey as seen through the smoke filled room of Lara's vision. Lara's voice is not great but somehow it sounds perfect for these songs of love and love lost. He literally sounds like the everyman pianist who spends his life laboring unknown in small, smoky, skanky clubs with the oversized brandy snifter stuffed with tips resting on the piano. In spite of less than quality voice these recordings are marvelous because they feature the original recordings of songs you may heard somewhere with arrangements as they were intended to sound. In the traditional sense of a good voice Lara falls short but the emotion permeates making the music sound good. "El Flaco de Oro," Agustin Lara was an international star, has been honored in Granada,Spain and Veracruz, Mexico with a bronze statues and is deserving of a "complete" box set but for now this is about as good as it gets. Featuring 40 recordings, this collection of Lara music is a real bargain. RCA has a series of "Mejor de lo Mejor" discs where they showcase old artists from their archives and this is definitely one of their best of the best. The disc is no frills, no information other than the obligatory musical credit; to RCA's credit they at least say which year and LP the music came from. The sound quality is very good and each disc has a cool look like a phonograph record. If you like old time Mexican music featuring a fantastic composer than add this bargain double disc to your collection; it's a classic collection of songs by a musical poet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD from an Excellent Singer
I was pleasantly surprised to come upon this new release. As a long time Laura Pausini fan I always look forward to listening to new material she puts out. This album does not disappoint. The three new songs are excellent and I like "Dos historias iguales" best. I enjoyed her re-interpretation of "Cuando se ama", the duet with Gilberto Gil. This CD is well-done and not just another plain "Greatest Hits" effort. There is a reinterpretation of some old material and the appearance of some new songs. This CD will be a delight for both old and new Pausini fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Like meeting old friends
That's how you'll feel when you listen to this CD, and of course if you are familiar with Laura's music. Not only that, but it also inlcudes a few new tracks that are excellent, especially Volveré junto a tí. Laura proves once again that she is one of the best tragic-love singers. Most of her songs are hopelessly sad, about being out of love, in love but unhappy, or plainly lonely. That's what is so great about her and why she has so many followers, we have all felt down, miserable and lovesick at some point of our lives. The new versions or the old hits are some kind of gift, I assume, to the fans, however in my personal opinion I'd stick to the old versions. Especially with GENTE (which just doesn't sound right) and AMORES EXTRAÑOS. Don't get me wrong, they are good versions, but they seem to have lost that which made them so great originally. LA SOLEDAD is a different story, even though this new version does not surpass the former, much more dramatic one, it gives the song a new shade of sadness. It might even sound like a TORI AMOS song. The one track I dfinitely skip is CUANDO SE AMA, which se sings with some Brazilian (?) artist. I'm not questioning his talent, but one has to admit he sounds like he's about to die or cry, can't tell. It's a pleasure to hear Laura singing in Portuguese, though. All in all, the album is great and I strongly recommend it not only to fans but anyone who's not familiar with her music.

5-0 out of 5 stars LA MEJOR DISCO QUE TENGO
I first listened to a song from this C.D. in a coffee shop in Spain. It was track 4 "son amores." After listening to this song I immediatly asked the worker in the coffee shop who it was by. I then bought the mejores C.D. and I love every single sony on the C.D. The words are beautiful, the beat in the songs are awesome, and now I am going to buy the rest of the CD's. This is definitely the best C.D. that I own, and the first C.D. I have ever bought that I like every single song on. I would reccommend it to anyone studying Spanish or anyone who speaks Spanish. Me encanta.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Excellent
I have heard many songs by Laura before, and have always loved her voice. She reminds me a lot of Rocio Jurado...the two of them have an opera-like voice, but sweeter and softer vocals. I had never owned a Laura CD, but "Volveré Junto a ti" along with "Entre tu y Mil Mares", "Escucha tu Corazón" and her voice is more than enough reasons to own this CD. Currently 3 people in my household have this CD!!! God bless you Laura and thank you for your beautiful and mesmerizing voice. Viva Laura.

2-0 out of 5 stars Hire a New Composer for This Talented Singer!!!
By the middle of the 5th track, I was ready to swap out the CD! As a new listener to Laura Pausini, I was mesmerized by her bright voice and at the same time saddened by the monotonous tunes, track after track. Laura Pausini would be much better showcased by borrowing song writres from Celene Dion and even Britney Spears. And I agree with other reviewers that Gilberto Gil should not have a singing career, definitely not with Laura! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an ESSENTIAL Calexico ep
not a bunch of throwaway tracks, an essential own...

Alone Again Or-cover of 60's band Love, very good, got a vintage brass/folk rock sound, very happy which underlies a darker lyric
Convict Pool-understated thundering acoustic song, very emotional sounding
Si Tu Disais-Classic Calexico cover, originally by Francois Brut (?)originally on the ltd import of Feast of Wire with Link Wrays "Fallin Rain "(why is that not on here) along with
Corona-classic song, known by many as the song from Jackass. Its a Minutemen song, but the Calexico version adds the Mariachi horns and driving sound we all love
Praskovia-probably the most elkegant Calexico song yet, a more lush version of a waltz like Mazurka or Mazurra off Spoke,I imagine counts and countesses dancing to this one
Sirena-a new classic, rhythmically like Crystal Frontier, with a nice chorus and more understated horns

Besides all this its got a nifty bonus track of the cartoon El Kabong rides Again set to the tune of Minus De Cobra ... Read more

On his first studio album in three years, No Es Lo Mismo ("It's Not the Same"), Spanish superstar Alejandro Sanz expands his musical horizons in hopes of reaching a bigger Stateside audience.Already an accomplished songwriter (he wrote tracks for Ricky Martin's and Alexandre Pires' current albums) Sanz co-produced No Es Lo Mismo with Cuban musician Lulo Perez, and the new collaboration gives much of the album a crisp, fresh sound. Still grounded in the lush rhythms of flamenco, Sanz adds rock, earthy instrumentation, and even rap to the mix, with mostly impressive results. The first single and title track builds to a rousing crescendo amid solid percussion and vocal support, while Sanz amusingly dabbles in hip-hop on the bilingual "Try To Save Your S'ong." However, love ballads and social themes are trademarks of Sanz's repertoire, and there are enough of both here to satisfy longtime fans and pique new listener interest. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Buen album, pero...

5-0 out of 5 stars No es lo mismo....
Adelante Alejandro! Viva el cambio y sigue evolucionando!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good album...
This is a good album. It has some romantic songs and also some with more quick rhithym.I especially like "Eso", "No es lo mismo","Try to save your song" & also "Regalame la silla donde te esperé".
A good album. But it.

3-0 out of 5 stars no es lo mismo...no pasa nada...

3-0 out of 5 stars A great latin pop album!
I find this album very differences from what I usually listen to, but since Mana is as talented as they are, this is a great album. The songs that really stands out here is the most beautiful ballad they ever made "Vivir Sin Aire" which has alots of feeling in it, "Donde Jugaran los Ninos?" which is a very original pop/rock song, and of course the cool uptempo rock song "Me Vale" by Alex(the drummer, Fher is the one who sing most of the other songs), which is my fave track on this album(pretty much the reason why I bought it) but besides from those, just normal "hits", ok, "Oye me amor" "Como te deseo" was great when I first listened to them, but now I am tired of them, and almost never listen to them anymore. Likewise goes for the song "De Piez a Cabeza", but it is a nice reaggie song. If u like latin pop, then this is the album for you, but if you discovered Maná with the masterpiece rock alternative album "Suenos Liquidos" well then I suggest you rent the cd before buying it, cause it is a totally difference style, but with the same Mana feeling, which is a good reason to buy it, and of course, this was the album that made them famous.........But personally I prefer their new stuff(from Cuando los angeles lloran to now)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Spanish group.
Mana is one of the best Spanish groups alive. Amazingly they have been around for quite a while and never fail to please their fans with each and every one of their new albums. Though this one isn't the best, it is one of the best and I do recommend you hear it at least once.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent album: fun & meaningful!
I'm kind of ashamed to admit it, but at first I didn't want to buy this album. I was interested in Maná but had never bought any of their CDs. I asked around which ones to buy and I heard "Dónde Jugarán Los Niños?," "Cuando Los Ángeles Lloran," and "Revolución de Amor." Seeing that "Dónde" was so old (1994), I didn't want to buy it because I thought the music would be cheezy. I had heard so many good reviews though, I did.

I'm glad I bought it! It's a great album, and who could care less about the 90's-type music? It's better than plain old American 90's stuff cuz it's all that and more! It's got latin percussion & other instruments that liven it up. There are fun songs like "La Chula" and "Cachito," and serious songs like "Vivir Sin Aire" (ay...¡qué triste!) and "Dónde Jugarán Los Niños?." I would not even think of getting rid of this CD! I reccomend it to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great on so many levels......
First of all, I should admit that I am not a fan of most Latin music. I feel that I am not educated enough to give an accurate review of any Latin CD other than this one. Perhaps I should explain.....
It's 1999 and my wife and I are vacationing in Mexico. While dancing and getting hammered in an outdoor after hours club, this song comes on. The drunk Americans all clear the floor and several local couples slide gracefully into the subtle rhythms of what is clearly one of their favorite well-known songs. There was definitely some romance in the air, and my wife and I joined the couples already dancing under the stars to the strains of what I learned later was the popular Mana hit "Vivir sin Aire". Over the next several nights we heard the song several times until we commented on the romantic and memorable nature of the melody, and how we should purchase the CD as a memento of our trip. My attempt to describe the song in a local mall is another exercise in comedy (as I speak almost no Spanish), but after humming it, the salesgirl recognized Mana instantly and sold me "Donde Jugaran Los Ninos".
After opening it, I was pleasantly surprised. The classical guitars, the percussion, the harmonicas and flutes....it really is a musically diverse album. The songs are tightly crafted and buoyant, with a large emphasis on the individual artistry of the musicians. I can't even think of who they sound like, there isn't much to compare it with here in the States. In any event, we are now die-hard Mana fans. You will be too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Maná's best album
"Dónde jugarán los niños" is Maná at their best. Maná, a socially conscious and musically diverse rock band from Mexico, got really huge with the release of this album in the early 90s, and with reason: it's fantastic! Always experimenting with eclectic sounds, this album combines modern rock, Latin rhythms, reggae, harmonica, etc. to create a sound all of its own; a sound that has come to be known as classic Maná. And with the themes of lost love and social justice, the music of this album produces universal emotions that can be felt even by those who don't understand the Spanish lyrics. Enjoyable to all. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What could be hotter?
This is the hottest, sexiest, most golden of the gold. Vargas: honey sweet, ripping, belting, trembling, hissing between gritted teeth, growling like a savage wolf - while her fingers from across a schizophrenic yet logical abyss play in melodious counterpoint to the emotional rollercoaster of her voice.

There are places in "Macorina" where I absolutely stop breathing. Look up the words! It is also well worth reading about the real Macorina.

I ripped this CD from a friend, but it is so incredibly good, I am buying it as a mark of respect for the incomparable, beautiful Chavela Vargas. I can't wait to hear more.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good way to know her
If you are interested in knowing latinamerican music,a good way to start is Chavela Vargas. She sings the most beautiful latin songs with the best performance of them all. This collection shows a good sample of her music: her traditional "Macorina", "Volver, volver" and "Mi segundo amor", different tunes and styles of music, which everyone interested in music should include on the list. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I was waiting for his Hits
Franco De Vita is a one of Venezuelan's greatest composers and interpreters. All of his songs in this CD are definitely his best Hits. There are some "Live" versions that makes the whole CD unforgetable, specially to his fans. His piano introductions to some of his songs makes me hear it once and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the classiest Franco De Vita hits packages
Here is yet another Franco De Vita greatest hits collection, but this one is noteworthy for a few reasons. It features a full booklet with song lyrics, which are essential for a songwriter such as De Vita. His lyrics, particularly in such thoughtful, socially-conscious songs like "No Basta" and "Los Hijos de la Oscuridad," are among the most powerful and moving in Latin-pop today. This collection also marks the end of his relationship with Sony, as he signed with Universal Music last year, and a new disc is due later this year.

The 30 songs here are a good selection of De Vita's Sony hits, though the top 10 smash "Promesas" (from "Al Norte Del Sur") is strangely missing. And as this collection covers only the Sony years, none of De Vita's early hits are included in their original versions; therefore, "Un Buen Perdedor," "Solo Importas Tu" and "Aqui Estas Otra Vez" are live cuts taken from "En Vivo Marzo 16." So this still isn't a definitive De Vita package, but it's one of the best collections so far. And, of course, as any Latin-music fan knows, De Vita's music -- whether it's a rock, jazz, pop or salsa -- is among the most challenging, entertaining and enjoyable out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great compilation
As any good "Best hits" should be, this 30 songs compilation includes his classic best songs, like Te amo, Será, Sólo importas tu, Un buen perdedor, No basta.. and also the best of his new albums, especially Te veo venir soledad. The only change I would make? Include "No hay cielo". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars pure pop bliss
i was in madrid for spring break this march, and saw this album EVERYWHERE so i picked it up, and i can not stop listening to it. it is just one of the best pop albums i have ever bought...period. the vocals and melodies of the lead singer are fabulous. i can listen to this album through and through...songs like EL 28, CUENTAME AL OIDO, DILE AL SOL, PESADILLA...are all fabulous. If you're wondering who they sound like, their music is somewhere along the lines of Duncan Dhu but more upbeat, not as dark.

5-0 out of 5 stars La Oreja is Music to My Ears
If you like groups that write intelligent lyrics and really know how to sing them and you haven't bought La Oreja de Van Gogh's "Dile al Sol" CD, buy it today! This is one of the best CDs of 1999. Even if you don't speak Spanish, you will not be disappointed by the lead singer's sultry voice and this band's easy-going rhythm. This group has everything it needs to be an international sensation -- if it plays its cards right.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun again!
i bought el viaje al copperpot first, then this one.. I love them both. They are pretty creative and unique adn a lot of fun each time I listen to them! This group is pretty cool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tell me, what can I ask for?
That's what Amaia claims in "Que puedo pedir" and it seems to be true for the album. What else can we ask for? We've got a powerful voice, great musicians, amazing lyrics and an outstanding debut album.

My personal highlights are "Pesadilla" (mesmerizing!), "Que puedo pedir", "Dile al sol" and their first hit, "El 28". Then again, if you like La Oreja, you must also get their 2nd album EL VIAJE DE COPPERPOT.

It's a shame that bands such as La Oreja and Mecano are not famous worlwide just because of the language limitations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quizas el mejor disco de Serrat...

5-0 out of 5 stars The best CD I've ever bought
Considering I own over 400 CDs in several languages, this is not small praise. From the lyrics down to the music, it's hard to pick a favorite. The title song "Mediterraneo" brings a plethora of emotions to life, by its rhythms alone. "Tio Alberto" always brings a smile to my lips & "Que va a ser de ti" brings tears to my eyes. The somewhat-melancholic passion evoked by "Pueblo Blanco" is perhaps the pinacle of the collection. I think that even if you don't speak Spanish, you may experience some of these feelings with this marvelous CD. This is music to be felt by all your senses, don't miss it!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
Serrat has been around since the 70's. I have some of his best works and Mediterraneo is arguably the best or one of his best endeavors. His style changed over the years but he is still a poet and troubadour. Listening to Mediterraneo, one wants to go to Spain, to see the places he talks about on the coast of the Mediterranean ocean, to relax on the beaches, appreciate the beautiful Spanish girls, be one with nature and listen for the things that explain how Joan Manuel was able to write about it. If you speak Spanish, get this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars By All Means!
No, this is not a "Compilation" this is an original work of art, crafted with love and a huge sense of purpose. It is Serrat's best album with many classic titles included. We find a mature composer and a settled singer, with fantastic, orchestrations "Mediterraneo" is the album to have if you can only have one from this very prolific spanish (catalonian) singer-songwriter. The variety of themes and alusions is mind bogling, including one ode to "Tio Alberto". Who has not had an uncle like that! An absolute must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clasico
... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars powerful voice collection for Ana fans
Ana gabriel is my favorite latin singer ive been a ana gabriel fan since 1995. When first heard her classic ranchera hit.( es demaciado tarde) that song call still bring me chills, this collection contains it all. Hit's like (LUNA,QUIEN COMO TU,and one of her biggest pop ballads ever (SIMPLEMENTE AMIGOS) simply friends.she wrote for a gay friends, its true powerful lyrics sais how unexcepting sociaty really is.In concert Ana Gabriel delivers triple times to her audience than what you get on a cd, She sounds 3x better is person, She laughs, dances swiftly to the beasts and cries to the feeling on the song. No matter what row you are in you feel her sound. Being dressed so simple the woman looks like a million bucks,(classy) Ilove ANA GABRIEL.. canta mi ANA...... must have album...

5-0 out of 5 stars You will NEVER regret you bough this!
This CD is great! I can't stop listening to it! It has all of her best hits since the early 1980's to 2000. If you speak Spanish: "¡Este disco es para cortarse las venas!"

5-0 out of 5 stars If you are looking for a voice to channel love , this is it!
Through the years , nobody has released as many great songs as Mexico's Ana Gabriel. Her raspy voice and profound and abismal lyrics are an enigma that is a pleasure to try to understand. This compilation is just an example of 30 points of view of this enigmatic woman. Every single track is sung as if it would be her last. from "Mar Y Arena" to the amazing "No Te Hago Falta" , she delivers with all her devotion to her ever demanding master , her music. This is a must for anyone who has ever felt frustration, sadness, grief and the bliss that follows. a true artist like Ana is hard to find. One of the things I find interesting is the fact that she decided to omit all her ranchera tracks from this compilation. Could it be because she feels her passion lies not in that style? Even so , this is a crucial compilation , and does good at choosing her best tracks. ... Read more

Since the release of 1996's dance-oriented Planeta Paulina,Paulina Rubio has switched labels, refocused her musical energy, andemerged with a palette of sounds and styles that makes Paulinaher most diverse and mature album yet. With the help of Colombianproducer and songwriter Estefano, Rubio hastaken the rock, pop, and dance influences heard on previous albums andblended them effortlessly on this collection, her fourth. The firstsingle, "Lo Hare Por Ti," rides an infectious guitar hook, while "YoSigo Aqui" and "Sexi Dance" showcase pulsing club rhythms. Rubio evendabbles in Go-Go's-flavoredpop ("Sin Aire") and interprets one of the great Juan Gabriel'spolished ballads ("Cancun y Yo"). The album's shining moment, though,is "El Ultimo Adios," which bleeds electric guitars and a lilting popbeat into a traditional mariachi arrangement. 5-0 out of 5 stars This album is a MUST HAVE!
I first heard Paulina Rubio's "Y Yo Sigo Aqui" playing at my favourite club in my hometown, and I was totally hooked on it. I FINALLY got around to picking up this cd, and let me tell you, I'm floored by it. I've had it for a mere 3 days, and I think i've listened to it about 50 times, start to finish. I have nothing but good things to say about this cd. The sounds are all over the place, but everything flows together at the same time. "Sin Aire" sounds like a Latin No Doubt song, awesome ballads such as "Tal Vez, Quiza" and "El Ultimo Adios" are surely run away hits. "Y Yo Sigo Aqui" is the best track on the cd, a pounding club cut that deserves international attention. "Vive el Verano" is Latin Pop at it's finest, and "Sexi Dance" is just that... sexy as hell. Paulina's voice is smooth one song, gritty the next. It's a beautiful collection of great tunes. Everyone should own this cd.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wow Paulina!
WOW! This is what I had to say when I listened to this album. After all her past albums were basically a failure which gave Paulina Rubio a very hard time and were bought by nobody, she came back in 2000 with this self-titled album. It is actually a pretty good album. I must say it's her best. The majority of the songs are very good with the exception of "Mirame A Los Ojos" and "Sin Aire". There were about five or six hits from this album. This album includes many kinds of rythms such as dance, pop, latin, ranchera, and a little bit of rock. "Lo Hare Por Ti", for example, is a reggae-pop song. "El Ultimo Adios" is a ranchera song. "Y Yo Sigo Aqui" has a dance-pop rhythm which makes you want to dance. There are also relaxing ballads such as "Tal Vez, Quiza" and "Tan Sola".

I must say that in 2002, she thought she was going to hit with any song, but she was totally wrong. I was so disappointed when I listened her new "Border Girl" album. It was all electronic work. I know fans refuse to believe this, but it is the truth. She did not "conquer" the U.S. as she and many of her fans expected.

If you want to listen to Paulina's best album, you should listen to this. You will like it a lot.

What sounds like an early-model Casio playing "Wake Me Up Before You Go Go" quickly gives way to a classic Perez Prado riff. On top of it all, Lou Bega--born in Germany to a Ugandan father and Italian mother--hoarsely exhorts the floor to "Mambo No. 5." A runaway hit in more than a dozen countries, it's an agreeable trifle, if ultimately not as charming as "Macarena" proved to be a few summers back. Throughout this cash-in album, Bega comes off like a cross between a less clever Tone-Loc and a less inspired Buster Poindexter. If there's a great Europop-Cuban fusion in the making, its standard-bearers will have to come up with more durable trashy fun than this. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Alot of fun, but it's all the same.
I liked Lou Bega, his single "Mambo nr 5" was the song of the summer 1999 and brings me alot of memories. "I got a girl" was almost identical but cause of the hype it sold quite well too. "Tricky Tricky" in the other hand was a complete failure and the last thing more or less we heard about him.

Lou Bega, made a very original album, he borrowed some old 50's stuff and made some funky danceable pop songs out of it. Nothing wrong with that cause it all worked and was fun...for a while, problem with this Cd is that is all the same. Have you heard a few songs then you know the rest will sound almost the same. When i heard Ricky Martin for the first time i though he would become a one hit wonder aswell with his Latin stuff, but i was wrong. Ricky hooked up with some american song writers and they started writing commercial english pop tunes with some latin influence for him to remain in the spotlight, Lou Bega could have done the same and showed that he was capable of making some diffent stuff too, but he didn't and he was shortly gone for good. Atleast he did his thing and that's a good thing unfortunately these kind of music won't remain on the charts for long.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Gotta Get This!
I recently heard Mambo No 5 while on vacation at a Club Med. I had a great vacation and Mambo No. 5 was part of it. I didn't know who the artist was but I knew I liked the song... a lot. When I got home and heard the same song at a dinner cruise, I was up and dancing before I knew what I was doing. I bought the CD the next day just for the single Mambo No. 5-- but the whole CD is great, right down to the last track! Ok, some of the CD's lyrics are sexist, but not horribley so. Get passed it. You won't be able to NOT get in the groove and move with the beat. You can tell in his voice he's happy and having a darn good time. And it's catching. Listening to A Little bit of Mambo is fun and leaves you feeling a little happier! It is simply intoxicating, but minus a pesky hang over. You gotta get this!

1-0 out of 5 stars No you can not tico-tico me!
Okay,My friend burned this a long time ago 4 me.and it sucked.I h8 this 1 hit wonder.I will never give Limp Bizkit,Uncle Kracker,Eminem,Snow, and Black Eyed peas a chance cuz I do NOT want stupid band names in my collection.I almost rejected Atomic Kitten outright becuz of their lame name.Gee,might as name ur band "Atomic Puppy" of "Atomic Parrot".

Thic C.D. has lame lyrics such as,

"I think 1+1=10."

Wrong-o!

"all I need is a mobile phone-2 tell everybody "I'm not @ home"."
DUHH!

Sry,only 4 stupid ppl.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bouncy and Fun
Who cares if this is great music or not or if Lou Bega has a good voice or not? This is playful, fun, bouncy music. It even makes those of us who don't dance feel like shaking it up. I bought this on a whim for one song that I heard in a commercial for a large telecommunications company (1+1=2) and was hoping that wasn't the only good song on the album, as so often happens. It wasn't. The whole album is great fun to listen to. This is music that most everyone can enjoy, with a touch of naughty pleasures. Several songs are about romancing many women at once (specifically Mambo No. 5 and I Got a Girl), so if you have strong moral codes, you might want to steer clear. No filthy lyrics or violence here, so if you teens want to buy this one, I would let them. Just keep in mind, it's not squeeky clean stuff and one or two lines in a couple of songs migh make you blush. Tame in comparison to a lot of the stuff out there.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only one good song.
The rest are mediocre at best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars CALIENTE!
I'm not sure if my pulse is up because of the terrific songs and style or the gorgeous photos of Chayanne in the CD package. I don't speak Spanish but I don't think it is necessary. He has a very soothing voice, not terribly strong but he definitely handles ballads, salsa and uptempo numbers with ease. I don't know why he has not crossed over with more popularity, like Ricky Martin or Marc Anthony because he deserves it. If you saw the movie DANCE WITH ME-you know he is multi-talented beyond his striking looks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made me a fan
I had not heard of Chayanne before this cd. I bought it on a whim not knowing what he sounded like. This cd is amazing! It is a nice collection of hits that showcase Chayanne's impressive talent. I have since purchased several of his other cds and can recommend them all. This cd is missing some of his really catchy tunes (Guajira and Boom Boom for instance), but it is a great intro for a new fan

5-0 out of 5 stars Great! Great! Great!
This album is just great! The three new songs on the album, Si Tu Te Vas, Torero and Quisiera Ser are incredible. Chayanne has proven to be one of the best spanish singers and he just keeps getting better. The other tracks are just a few of his geatest hits. I've been listening to him since the beginning and I never get tired of hearing him sing his past hits. He's an incredible, amazing singer!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD, definitely a must buy for the collection
I was fortunate to look at Chayanne perform live a couple of months ago, and he is a marvelous artist, can dance so well, (beats Ricky Martin) and has a very nice voice. This CD has most of his best songs, and I especially adore the first new single he has Y TU TE VAS. This song alone makes it worthwhile to purchase the CD. If you have never heard Chayanne, this CD takes care of that for all the missing years. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for fans & a great introduction for future fans.
This release starts off with a couple of new songs and works its way through 16 additional songs from Nek's 4 best-selling CDs. If you are familiar with Nek, I probably need not say another word as you'll find yourself buying this CD as a no-brainer. For those of you who have not heard of this singer, you are missing out big time. I discovered NEK via a the hypnotic "Laura No Esta" in a compilation CD and had to find out more about this passionate singer who I quickly came to learn was much more than a Sting-sound alike (which some dismiss him as) with lush choruses and impeccable musical arrangements. I bought his self-titled debut (which came out in late 1997/early 1998) and was amazed to discover that there not a dud in the bunch and his voice is really distinct, yet (if it makes any sense) very Sting-like in both his early and louder Police years and more subdued latter work.

Like his contemporary Eros, Nek is an Italian who sings in his mother tongue as well as in Spanish. I would describe NEK as a maker of contemporary Latin pock/rock with an incredible ability to sing ballads that don't sound sappy. The release has a little of everything, yet is as cohesive as I've heard. Almost every song has a hook that stays with you. As I said in my review for Nek's self titled debut release, this guy is an original in an overcrowded field dominated by a lot of pretty boys with little time or chance for longevity, and although NEK certainly falls into that category looks-wise, it starts and ends with his voice, song delivery, and song-writing. I predict a long career if he chooses to continue to share his gift with the public. I hope that this greatest hits release is a huge success as I'd love to hear much more from NEK. Even if you have all his releases, which I do, this collection has a nice flow and unless you want to make your very own greatest hits collection, this purchase does the work for you and includes 2 new songs. As at least one of his other releases, this one EASILY earns its 5 stars. ... Read more
