Glorious vocals and impeccable production make Mexico en la Piel one of the best moments in superstar Luis Miguel's already-illustrious career. The album of mariachi classics is superb from start to finish, thanks in large part to the accompaniment of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. Miguel's previous albums of bolero classics were polished, if predictably safe, affairs. His albums of original tunes (Aries, Amarte es un Placer, 33) were less successful, often relying on dated arrangements that made him sound hopelessly out of touch with modern music. Mexico en la Piel, however, is a revelation. It honors past musical traditions via smart, classy song selections and still bristles with immediacy and edge. Miguel's immense success could have easily found him resting on his laurels. Instead, he has delivered an often-thrilling collection that should appease old and new fans of any age. --Joey Guerra ... There’s no doubt that singer Lila Downs' profile is on the rise after her appearance in the film Frida and on the accompanying soundtrack, which led to a performance at the 2003 Academy Awards. The dividing lines between cultures and classes are major themes throughout the Mexican-American singer's decade-long career; but whereas 2001’s Border is more angry about the disparities, One Blood: Una Sangre is more inclusive, if only for the hopeful note of unity sounded in the English-language version of the title cut (the album has two distinctly different readings of the song sung, respectively, in English and Spanish). While much of the cumbia-based, genre-breaking material here is original, Downs and her band completely revamp two covers: Ritchie Valens classic "La Bamba" features techno beats and African drumming; the folk song "La Cucaracha" opens with wailing guitar before settling into a gentle reggae groove. Stylistically restless and lyrically didactic, One Blood: Una Sangre is as ambitious as it is beautiful. –-Tad Hendrickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprising
Listening to the first track the first time, you think this is going to be an average album, maybe a mistake to get it. But as the album progresses each song reveals flavours and styles that are surprising, interesting, varied and strong. Even two songs as overworked/corny as La Bamba and La Cucaracha come off new and fresh. This could album could appeal to people who like cumbia, flamenco, jazz, Cuban, or Latin influence music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting and Hip
This is a beautiful album! I had never heard of Lila Downs but was immediatly struck by her vocal prowress and the unique musical arrangement of the songs. I heard the album playing in a bookstore and ran over to the music department to purchase it right away. The lyrics have many layers of meaning that leave you with a rich satisfying experience. The music is soulful, haunting, and hip with a nod to tradition. I recommend this album to anyone who thinks and feels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Until there's a live album...
this will have to do!!! But, hey, this is one killer album and a must buy for any fan of Lila, World Music and Women's music.

Although I would have to say La Linea is probably still my personal fave--mostly because it was the current album when I first got into her music-- Una Sangre will likely go down as her best effort yet and will at the very least set the bar really high for the band for future albums.

This is, of course, due largely to the awesome ensemble sound of her new international band and the excellent input of her husband (and band's keyboardist and sax player), Paul Cohen. Arguably this group should have its own name, as this is less a solo album by a singer and noticeably more a "group effort".

This is not to say that Lila's signing is anything less than superb on this album! I think she demonstrates better technique and is in generally "better voice" (you singers know what I am talking about!) on this album than she is on her previous albums.

There are so many excellent tracks on this disc that I cannot do all of them justice in less than 1000 words, so I will mention just one in particular: Malinche. Check out the syncopated timing, the communication and tightness of the musicians, the unmistakable way the band gradually weaves its intricate sound, the way parts of the song melt and blend into each other.

This is called style, folks, and that's what this album has achieved: a signature sound that only this collection of musicians can accomplish. It's funky, it's hip, it's jazzy, it's intellectual, it's traditional, it's cutting edge, it has monster grooves, impressive instrumental sections and beautiful vocals.

Buy it today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great album, get this please
Using different languages and musical styles as vehicles, Lila Downs' new album, Una Sangre (One Blood), is an emotional journey into cultural diversity and understanding in an effort to show us all our similarities. While cultural exploration is undoubtedly the focus of Una Sangre, under the rich tapestry of music lie poetic social commentary and themes of empowerment. Subtle hip hop-like production and Downs' entrapping vocals handsomely conceal a tribute to a female lawyer murdered in 2002 for fighting for human rights on the Spanish sang "Dignificada."

Heavy handed notions do not prevent Downs from having fun on Una Sangre. Creative and intriguing renditions of "La Bamba" and "La Cucaracha" add reason for there to be dancing amid all the dialogue Downs encourages. While the unifying thoughts behind it are praiseworthy, the true attraction of Una Sangre is Downs' herself. Hovering somewhere between Celia Cruz and Dinah Washington, Downs' voice is gorgeous and amazing as she easily goes from the bluesy growl of songs like "Mother Jones" and "Paloma Negra," to the fluttering weightlessness of "Yanahuari Nin." Down's proves the lofty thesis of her album title, Una Sangre, by crafting cohesive beauty out of a plethora of style(she even rhymes), sounds and languages. Una Sangre is a wonderful offering.-Christopher Sanders

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great One!
Lila's CD "La Linea" has become one of the "can't-live-without-it-desert-island must-have" disc in my collection. With the arrival of "Una Sangre", I happily have another disc with the same status. The CD opens joyfully with "Viborita". She continues with her political and spiritual messages in the title track and with cuts like "Dignificada", the re-worked "La Cucaracha" and the magical "Flower of Marigold". The band, which I was lucky enough to see recently, is truly international and the music reflects this, from Mexico to Japan to the deep southern blues and gospel notes included the cut "Mother Jones". While she came to global prominence as the female singer on the Buena Vista Social Club album and in the film, Omara Portuondo has a career that--like the other participants--stretches back many years. She puts her experience to good use on this record, sounding for all the world like a Cuban Billie Holiday, smoky and quietly tragic, with a history of lost love. The lush arrangements, which often sound transplanted straight from 1950s Havana, frame her voice exquisitely while guests such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, and Rubén González add their inimitable talents to the mix. Her reading of "The Man I Love" ("El Hombre Que Yo Ame") is also a microcosm of the disc--slightly jazzy, with a yearning vocal that's emotive without ever being overwrought. There's little doubt that Portuondo is a world-class singer, and this is the ideal showcase for her extraordinary talents. --Chris Nickson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars From the heart....
I'm not deep into Cuban music, and haven't heard of Omara Portuondo before, but I find this a beautiful and treasurable CD. She sings from the heart of a love that hurts, and in a number of styles including a couple I'm not familiar with: guajiro, bolero, mambo, habanera, etc. I especially enjoyed "Veinte Anos" with the trombone and bass dialogue as introduction. And I certainly wasn't expecting her version of Gershwin's "El hombre que you ame". The familiar "Siempre en Mi Corazon" was another favorite. Yet, I enjoyed each and every one of the other numbers. She has a dramatically expressive voice and can carry one with her emotion. If, as one reviewer indicates, her voice isn't what it once was, it still is, to me, one of the great voices one can hear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Omara Portuondo's enchanting voice will get you addicted
When I watched Buena Vista Social Club, I especially loved the studio recording of "Silencio" with Ibrahim Ferrer and Omara Portuondo and also "Veinte Anos" from the Carnegie Hall concert. When I listened to this CD for the first time, I couldn't believe just how good Omara Portuondo really sings. In a variety of Cuban styles (Guajira, Bolero, Mambo, Son, ...) she sings about lost love. But even though the themes of the songs are similar, the music is always completely different (sometimes even Jazz-like). I think at least half of the songs on this album are my favorite songs now. In case you just watched the movie but don't have the soundtrack, you should be aware that the version of "Veinte Anos" is very different from the version on the Buena Vista Social Club album (the movie soundtrack). It's much slower and has - except for the lyrics and tristess - not much in common with the "original". Beautiful music!

5-0 out of 5 stars Builds on a great foundation
Since I was first introduced to the jewels of Cuba's past, I have craved more and more of this wonderful music. Omara's solo CD does not dissapoint, her voice is beautiful and the orchestrations are superb. Detractors of Ry Cooder's slide guitar will be happy to know that it is absent from this release.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
I don't think I need to write much about this one. It's simply superb as other projects by Bueno Vista Social Club. If you are a fun of Cesaria Evora, this is another voice you will fall in love with.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you Have a BVSC Album, This is a Must Have
I feel this is a much better listening experience if you listen to any of the other Buena Vista Social Club albums on a regular basis. I admit, it's not my favorite...the overall tempo is slower than the soundtrack or either of Ibrahim's albums. However, it easily earns 5 stars...even on a 4 star scale. I just so happen to prefer the quicker time of the other albums. This album has a deeper more emotional tone. Maybe because the focus is placed on a woman unlike the other BVSC releases...I'm only speculating as I don't understand the lyrics.

I personally can't imagine having this album only, so be sure to take advantage of Amazon and the Marketplace's selection of Afro-Cuban music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure beauty!
I bought this CD not really knowing Eydie Gorme and was knocked out by beauty of her voice! In this new wake of latin music everybody is talking about Buena Vista Social Club and modern latin hit-makers, but it seems that this beautiful album is little forgotten. It's a pure beauty, pure pleasure and listener have to be deaf,cold-hearted and dead if he is not humming the songs together along with her.Later I discovered that trio Los Panchos caught Eydie performing in "Copacabana" club and asked her for collaboration (she was still HOT on the wings of her hit "Blame It On Bossa Nova") and two beautiful albums are result.Songs are mostly gently ballads that warm the heart and although its hard to take a pick, my choice would be "Cuando Vuelva Tu Lado", ancient Mexican song later made into "What A Difference A Day Made".

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!
My mother had this album back in the 60's so I grew up listening and loving this music. When I discovered that I could buy the CD from Amazon.com, I bought it immediately and have listened to it almost every day! Eydie Gorme's voice is wonderful, combined with the Los Panchos, this is definitely one of the BEST of ALL TIMES!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a surprising detour.
Eydie Gorme is decended from Sephardic Jews, whose traditional language is a form of 15th century Spanish known as Ladino, so this foray into South American/Caribbean/Mexican Spanish songs is not entirely surprising. Like Lizz below, this was the soundtrack to most of my family's parties and dances, so it has special meaning for me. Gorme's voice is flawless in the typical 50's/60's Gogi Grant/Vikki Carr manner, her accent is pretty good, and Los Panchos provide an excellent backdrop to her singing. In all, this is a must for any Cuban/Mexican/Argentine summer party.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classy Songs, Classy Singer...
Overall, this is a fine collection of songs. Eydie Gorme's performance is wonderful. Her voice and styling are silky smooth, powerful at the right times, and at moments, very sensual. On this recording, Eydie partners with "Los Panchos", a first rate group of musicians that provide a soothing landscape of vocal harmonies and guitars for Eydie's lead vocals. The recording quality is good considering the age of the source tapes. I recommend this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best!
I listen to this everyday. How many recordings can you say that about?

It scrubs off the stress in the first few minutes.

Don't worry if you are intimidated by buying a CD that isn't in English. This CD truly transcends any language barrier. I know less than a hundred words and a few phrases of Spanish.

Get it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Luis Miguel is the master of the love song.
These three discs sum up what is inside the Latin heart and love experience. Want to dance slowly and hold that special someone in your arms? This is the music for you. Most Latinas melt when this music is being played. Don't speak Spanish, not a problem, the message of love is universal as is music. You don't have to speak Spanish to appreciate these songs. There is a song for every imaginable phase of ones love life. An excellent romantic collection. A must buy for anyone who has ever been in love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnifico
I've been a fan of Latin(boleros) and French(Piaf, Aznavour, etc.) music since the 60's. Never have I experienced such pleasure in listening as with Luis Miguel. This man inteprets lyrics in such a way as to make them his very own. His blending of smoothness with emotional content is extraordinary. When he sings, I believe every word and feel the impact in the deepest parts of my soul. Whether it be the pain or hope of love, his presentation is so intimate and personal that one feels as if he's telling his own stories. A truly great singer-Viva El Rey!

5-0 out of 5 stars Todos los romances
the music is great however it came with a package and the case was broken and it was not taken care off.
I was dissapointed about the manner in wich it was shipped.
Just thought I would let you guys know to becareful next time you send something.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a must buy purchase for lovers of timeless music
This 3 CD set brings together the 3 smash releases that Luis Miguel released in the "Romance" genre beginning in 1991 through 1997 and for those who have not bought the individual releases, this is a great opportunity to get them all at a much better price than if purchased individually.

I first discovered Luis Miguel with his breakthrough 1990 release titled "20 Años" when I visited Mexico while on vacation and I can't believe that I still play that release so frequently so many years later. It's simply pop at its best so shortly thereafter I decided to give his first stab at Latin American standards a try and all I can say is "WOW." Luis Miguel brought a totally new the passion to timeless masterpieces and managed to make them as if they had been written exclusively for him. His amazing voice is elegantly complemented by the a lush instrumentation that quickly made it one of my favorites. Songs like 'No Me Platiques Mas," "Involvidable," La Puerta," "La Barca," "Usted" and many others make this the strongest of the 3 CDs and easily earns 5 stars.

Although the follow ups, titled "Segundo Romance" and "Mis Romances" are also flawless and Luis Miugel nails them perfectly, the song selection is not as strong as in "Romances;" notwithstanding songs like "El Dia Que Me Quieras" (I love the harmonica towards the end of that song), "Sin Ti" (his voice is on fire and the song as as good as any version I've ever heard!) and "La Media Vuelta" (the guitars and chorus is out of this world) from "Segundo Romance" as well as "Sabor A Mí," "La Gloria Eres Tu," and "Encadenados," from "Mis Romances" makes the other 2 CDs in this collection a must.

As a set I give this 3 CD collection a well-earned 4 star rating (which would have been 5) had the 2nd and 3rd CD matched the brilliance and energy of the 1st. Again, they are all great CDs, but the first is a 5-star masterpiece that brought an entirely new audience to this very talented singer who is not just a flash in the pan.

1-0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY MEDIOCRE!
Luis Miguel has an insignificant, annoying & mousey voice. The arrangements are all sappy, boring & overdone. If you want the real thing, sung by real singers, and performed by real musicians, I definitely recommend Los Tres Ases with a young Marco Antonio Muniz as the lead singer. If you are looking for a Solo Singer's interpretation of these songs, I wholeheartedly recommend Alberto Angel or Pedro Vargas...two velvety tenor voices that have some weight, breadth of technique & resonant voices. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Deep & Devout
While the fine points of south american politics may escape many, it is nearly impossible to mistake the voice of this once-exiled singer: she is all at once mighty, beneficent and tender. She is an army for the cause of the heart, with a smoky alto rooted deeply in the rhythms of the south.

This album presents a gratifying breadth of her work, thematically diverse but carried throughout by the unwavering certainty of Mercedes' marvelous delivery ("Gracias A La Vida", her signature song, could make a diamond weep).

This album transcends language barriers to reveal the glory of a woman whose art reverberates with the blood and suffering, majesty and hope of the human condition. It is music of power and grace, for the most part unbound by the commercialism of the day.

The only break in this gratifying visit with Mercedes is "Unicornio", which sounds a bit like the product of a weekend with Yanni. Every other track on this album is alive with spirit and fervor, making this an excellent and fulfilling introduction to the long and fruitful career of this legendary performer. 30 Años is well worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music that impacts not only the listener but also the world
After having heard Mercedes live in Florence Italy and in Austin Texas I must say that her music is as moving through her CD as it is in person. Mercedes has a way of capturing her audience and holding their attention captive until she has sung the last note. And after having the last note of a song she releases her listener only to have them thank her for their momentary incarceration. NOTE: One CD that is a must for any listener of Mercedes is De Mi.

5-0 out of 5 stars magifico!
Musica llena de ternura, compromiso y esperanza. En un mundo que parece que ya nadie valora el amor, la solidaridad, el canto, la alegria, y la fe. La musica de Mercedes Sosa es como un oasis en el desierto.

5-0 out of 5 stars Originals you may have heard elsewhere
What do such diverse entertainers as Placido Domingo, Chavela Vargas, Pedro Infante, Luis Miguel, Julio Iglesias, Helmutt Lotti, Rocio Banquells, Javier Solis, Nat King Cole, Rocio Durcal ,Lucho Gatica, Jorge Negrete, Lola Beltran, Caetano Veloso and countless trios and mariachi groups have in common? They have all recorded Augustin Lara compositions. Known as el "El Flaco de Oro," Agustin Lara is one of the Mexico's most prolific composers with some 600 compostions to his credit!! If you listen to Latin music, especially boleros, you have probably heard a Lara composition. Some of his more famous and interpreted songs are "Amor de Mis Amores," "Solamente Una Vez," "Veracruz," "Granada," Noche de Ronda," " Farolito," "Aventura," "Mujer," "La Cumbancha," "Pobre De Mi," and his ode to one of his four wives, old time film actress and goddess, Maria (La Dona) Felix , entitled "Maria Bonita." All of the mentioned songs are featured here and taken from the original LP recordings by Lara made between 1954 and 1961. Besides being a composer he was an acomplished pianist(worked in a bordelo at age 13, listen to the biographic "Imposible")) and a singer. This double disc features the voice and piano of Lara as he originally intended the songs to sound l . A wise person once told me the original composers know best how a song should sound:). There are a variety of styles by Lara but mostly tango, pasodoble and bolero music is featured. Although the music is old it still maintains a cosmopolitan flair that is classic. The piano work of Lara is prominent throughout although the disc and also features a conjunto he recorded with. Most of the songs have a melancholy feel and if you look at the picture of Lara, with his ever present cigarette dangling from his lip, it pretty much sums up the feeling. It is odd but the melancholy feeling is not really sad but more nostalgic, a different time, a different place; it's a colorful black and white world with shades of grey as seen through the smoke filled room of Lara's vision. Lara's voice is not great but somehow it sounds perfect for these songs of love and love lost. He literally sounds like the everyman pianist who spends his life laboring unknown in small, smoky, skanky clubs with the oversized brandy snifter stuffed with tips resting on the piano. In spite of less than quality voice these recordings are marvelous because they feature the original recordings of songs you may heard somewhere with arrangements as they were intended to sound. In the traditional sense of a good voice Lara falls short but the emotion permeates making the music sound good. "El Flaco de Oro," Agustin Lara was an international star, has been honored in Granada,Spain and Veracruz, Mexico with a bronze statues and is deserving of a "complete" box set but for now this is about as good as it gets. Featuring 40 recordings, this collection of Lara music is a real bargain. RCA has a series of "Mejor de lo Mejor" discs where they showcase old artists from their archives and this is definitely one of their best of the best. The disc is no frills, no information other than the obligatory musical credit; to RCA's credit they at least say which year and LP the music came from. The sound quality is very good and each disc has a cool look like a phonograph record. If you like old time Mexican music featuring a fantastic composer than add this bargain double disc to your collection; it's a classic collection of songs by a musical poet. ... Read more

The septuagenarian Cuban singer Omara Portundo is the lone female crooner ofthe famed Buena VistaSocial Club. But in the 1940s and '50s, she was the velvet voiceof the jazz/bossa nova inspired genre known as filin. On her secondsolo CD, which translates as "Flower of Love," Portundo leads an assembly ofCuban and Brazilian musicians, featuring her Buena Vista bandmates, singer Ibrahim Ferrer andbassist Orlando CachaitoLopez. The Congolese guitar whiz Papi Oviedo, plays theCuban tres on "Amor de Mis Amores," "Habanera Ven," "Amorosa Guajira,"and the title track. Portundo's poetic pipes sweeten these Latin ballads, from the afro anthemed "Tabu," to "Casa Color," a new song penned forher by Brazil's Carlinhos Brown. Sonically seasoned with strings, woodwinds, guitars, and background vocals, Portundo's "musical love letters" arepostmarked with five decades of Afro-Cuban artistry. --Eugene Holley,Jr. ... Read more

She even sings the last track partly in Portuguese. As with all these Cuban albums recorded in the EGREM studios, there is a unique sound the old studio environment leaves on the recorded works. 3-0 out of 5 stars silver spring. md
i am a huge luis miguel fan and will be forever.. i go to every concert he has in my corner of the world.... But! i was a little disappointed in this cd & dvd. i was really hoping for NEW music from him. the dvd which contains his videos that have been seen by many people in the spanish speaking community and on spanish MTV.... i am hoping that his NEXT cd whenever that is will contain all NEW material..... BUT I STILL LOVE HIM TO DEATH!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Four Stars for bonus track and DVD, ONLY...
First of all, good compilation. I am not able to detract very much from this production for the sheer power of the chosen play list, the bonus track, "Hasta Que Vuelvas," and of course the DVD. The list of videos is too short, but everyone will be glad to have had them included in this issue. We expect, as is certainly the case with any "Best of" compilation, that this will be a kind of leave taking from the ROMANCE portion of Luis Miguel's opus. We, however, sincerely hope that it is not.

The collection presented here is very good. Of course, there is the problem of the previous and similar work, TODOS LOS ROMANCES, and the endless faraggo of questions it necessarily engenders to now have both it, and this particular collection, in circulation merely two years apart with only the exception of a few "new" songs.

This reviewer and ardent admirer of Luis Miguel's hopes against all that is contrary and cinical about the recording industry that MIS BOLEROS FAVORITOS was submitted for the further erudition of only his serious fans who also happen to be collectors of his music.

However, WEA International and Warner Musica Latina's thinly veiled attempt to keep the ROMANCE franchise alive is very frustrating. To be sure, from a purely commercial perspective, Luis Miguel, and all that has been produced from the ROMANCE series, has brought ENORMOUS wealth and longevity to the Latin division of the company; and one can only speculate what this artist and his beloved ROMANCE projects have done world-wide for the Latin Music genre on the whole. But, that is all. Once again, the almighty dollar rules over CREATIVITY and ART and INDIVIDUALISM. The truly lamentable thing is that Luis Miguel is most assuredly bound by contract with this corporation, and has probably been suffocating under the weight and pressure of the money requirement, and the growing despondency at not being able to record all that he wishes. Indeed, in his much-anticipated press conference, which convened in Madrid before the release, he openly alludes to the fact that this was wholly a "company decision"--leading us to believe that this compilation was neither his idea, nor his desire at this time. Nonetheless, either you are for your ART, or for your MONEY; and these two masters demand it ALL from an artist. You will serve one and hate the other, but you CANNOT serve them BOTH--not effectually, nor convincingly.

What makes any fan of Luis Miguel's the infinite ... in all of this is that he or she will never know to what degree, nor just how intimately important Luis Miguel's work is to him personally. Notice that from any of the recordings dating from 1988, none of the releases contain liner notes: the sacred space within the album jacket that is permitted an artist, where he can dedicate his work, thank all those around him, offer some of his personal thoughts; and in general, make the purchaser (the most IMPORTANT PERSON in the equation of "Artist + Admirer") feel that the work and final product was a journey embarked upon solely for the purchaser's pleasure and continued admiration. One always feels what an unfathomable abyss it is not to see one single, solitary word Luis Miguel feels, says, or thinks about his current work when one buys one of his CD's. He has never communicated that. We are never invited to peer into what a journey of evolution and discovery making an album is for him. No. Instead, we are left to wonder how much does he really respect his audience, how much of that shyness of his is really an escape from his adoring public (manufactured by him or the corporation that handles his material), and whether or not taking a simple fan's patronage of his music and industry into account is a concept that ever enters his own mind. He pays much lip service to that, but never issues his fans a Valentine to go with it.

We are, in this plastic and throw-away world, continually looking for a glimpse of the SINCERE, of the GENUINE, of PROPRIETY, and certainly, a look into an artist's true GRACIOUSNESS and, most of all, GRATITUDE toward his audience. For whatever reason we are left to ponder about our beloved Luis Miguel, we take what little we are given about this artist, extrapolate, that, beneath those elegant and highly polished veneers of his, there truly exists an immense talent who is a veritable GENTLEMAN, and that somehow, a bit of his HUMANITY still exists.

I raise my glass to Luis Miguel, if only for the immense scope of talent I have been so fortunate to witness, both from his live performances, and from every time any of his albums are delivering his indelible voice to the pleasure of heart.

Sir, may you continually gather success unto yourself as abundantly and as limitlessly as your fans love and admire you. May you obtain, however fleeting, a tinge of happiness and the satisfaction of your self-respect.

And may you never forget the extent of your welcome into our lives, that you possess it only for the while when you have exalted us above your own existence and power, and have made us the joy or your art-making.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent! Another masterpiece from THE KING!
Great album! Beautiful song selection!

The DVD's presentation could have been more sophisticated, a bit too simple for my taste, but it brings with it seven elegant music videos that put you inside the world of Luis Miguel.

THE KING!

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFULL CD, Boring.
The Word evolution does not exixt in the Luis Miguel dictionary this album is boring and sound the same like all his music.

He needs to learn about Ricky Martin that always surprise us with a good album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD; disappointing DVD
5 stars for the CD; 5 stars for being able to WATCH the great Mr Miguel on screen. However, one wonders why the audio on the DVD is so dreadful (except the last track). There is so much hissing sound that makes listening a bit difficult. Certainly for the track "Por Debajo De La Mesa" a better version has previously been released (on the Romances DVD Audio). Nevertheless, 5 stars for this CD/DVD, like for anything else he has done in the past 10 years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget Streisand, Gorme is a Much Better Singer
This is a great compilation of wonderful standards sung by a master vocalist. Just listen to Eydie sing "Love Letters" and you'll realize that she is the singer Streisand could only wish to be. Eydie has more vocal power, a more pleasant tonal quality, superior phrasing, and she doen't sound as if she ran out of Afrin nasal spray. Once you work your way through all of Streisand's mass marketing and pandering to the braindead masses, you'll come to the conclusion that as both a belter and soft ballad singer, Eydie is the far greater talent. True, she doesn't make self-aggrandizing films, nor does she demand servants to bow at her feet, nor does she take up every outlandish liberal cause to convince everyone that she is a wonderful, tolerant, accepting human being. Eydie is just an entertainer, afterall. Additionally, Eydie doesn't have an enormous ego or an enormous marketing machine or an enormous nose, just an enormous amount of vocal talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorme Feast
To have Ms. Gorme in CD is a dream come true. The fantastic quality of her voice can be realized from the highest note, to the softest sigh ---

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not the best
I take a back-seat to nobody when it comes to being a fan of Eydie Gorme - BUT I definitely do not share the enthusiasm of John Geelan when it comes to this CD. Not because the selections or the performance of each leaves something to be desired. Definitely not. I doubt if Eydie Gorme could possibly give a bad performance.

No, the problem is, while claiming to be the "Best Of" it turns out that only two of the twelve selections even charted - I'll Take Romance which went to # 65 pop in 1957 and You eed Hands which peaked at # 11 in 1958. Now if Curb meant the "best of" selections from her many successful LPs, then they should have said so because, to most people, the term usually means an artist's top charted single hits.

Missing, for example, are Too Close For Comfort and Mama, Teach Me To Dance (# 39 and 34 respectively in 1956), Love Me Forever (# 24 in 1957), and Blame It On The Bossa Nova, her highest charter which went to # 7 in 1963. A number of lesser hits from that era are also omitted, as are her Top 40 duets with husband Steve Lawrence - I Want To Stay Here and I Can't Stop Talking About You which went to # 28 and 35 in 1963 and 1964.

I recently sent Steve and Eydie an e-mail (posted on their web site) asking about the omissions and was pleased to hear that, at this writing, they are re-mastering all their hits for re-release later this year. Hopefully, Amazon.com will receive a supply and then ALL her many fans will be pleased.

Even in the northern states, Mexican music is easy to find on American radio, but airplay almost exclusively consists of the Tex-Mex norteño style. In contrast, there's barely an accordion in earshot on this sparkling collection of traditionally rooted songs. Los Bravos del Norte de Ramon Ayala weigh in with the bouncy ranchera "Andan Dicendo," but on all other fronts guitar trills rather than squeezebox sighs propel the music. With violin swoops and falsetto vocals, La Calaca unleash the galloping son huasteco/ranchera "Rogaciano." The same ensemble graces the gusto "El Tecolote" with less ferocity but equivalent momentum. Los Lobos dip way into their past with a 1977 version of the son jarocho sped up into a self-proclaimed son loco on "Flor de Huevo," complete with dizzying fretwork and a flailing rhythm. The delicate instrumental son istemeno wedding song "Mediu Xhiga" from Dueto de los Hermanos Rios brings exquisitely ornamented requinto guitar from Mexico's Pacific Coast. Rounding out the set is a slice of Latin cabaret complete with braying clarinets and a gritty vocal takeoff on, of all things, a traditional Mexican Christmas carol via Lhasa de Sela's "Los Peces." --Bob Tarte ... 5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommend
i am a chicana that has only recently started to listen to latin music and get into all things my culture. i bought this cd after i bought the latin groove cd this like all other putumayo cd's is amazing. again it is the trademark of putumayo to blend traditional and modern which i love. this cd was a breath of fresh air because it doesnt only play the norteno everyone is so used to. it showcases other types of mexican music. this cd is braethtaking i absoloutely love it along with putumayos latin groove and cuba cd's. there is also a kicking guacamole recipe in the mexico cd. it also shows some nahua (azteca)words and their translations. again i highly recommend this cd! putumayo comes out with some awesome releases!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!
This CD is really excellent. I have been to Mexico 3 times and this CD brings me right back. It makes me smile and makes me want to get on a plane and go right back! A really great collection of Mexican music - I have several Putumayo CDs and this is one of the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Variety and Mexican folklore
One of the best things I like about this CD is that it is not filled with Mariachi or norteno beats but equally balanced to reflect what Mexico really is; a very culturally Indo-Hispanic country. Buy this CD and hear the Mexico that we often times ignore.

5-0 out of 5 stars mexican music
This is really nice music, played beautifully. I'm trying to learn to play several of the songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars very mexican and a good mix!
Before I went to mexico, i was trusting this as a good mix of mexican traditional music. After goin to mexico and listening to this while i was there, i was not fooled. This is a wondeful selection of mexico music. I love just about every song. It reminds me of Mexico and the wonderful time i had there! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST PEDRO INFANTE CD
If you are fond of listening to boleros and want to buy a cd this is the FIRST cd you should get. This cd is a classic. I bought this on the Peerless label a while back so it was kind of expensive because it was imported. but now WEA did some deal with Peerless(to my surprise because Peerless was reluctant to accede to any foreign company) and WEA re-released his cd's but at a cheaper price(great!). DO NOT BUY PEDRO INFANTE ON ORFEON. ONLY on Peerless WEA. Peerless did a good job in safeguarding Pedro Infante's classic music. I am not from that era( I was born in the seventies) but I must say his voice I have not seen a match yet. This cd is a must since it contains his most known songs like Amorcito Corazon. ... Pushing the musical envelope with each successive album, the young Alejandro Fernandez went for broke on this fusion of pop balladry and trad rancheras. In a smart move, he picked veteran studio wiz Emilio Estefan Jr. to come up with a winning recipe--great material and excellent musicianship to back up a topflight singer. Gloria Estefan teams up with Fernandez in the duet "En el Jardin," a touching tune about finding true love. But it's on the inspirational song "Yo Naci para Amarte" that Fernandez's velvety baritone fuses passion with power as he sings of coming to terms with destiny. On the same level is "No Se Olvidar," in which he conveys the fear of solitude that coexists with the drive of personal conviction. Both songs radiate with a potent mix of emotion, from angry yells to desperate pleadings. --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars La mas hermosa
I have only had this album for one week and already it is one of my favorites! As a die-hard fan of both Spanish music and romantic songs, I was so overjoyed to hear Alejandro's beautiful voice. He has a fabulous vocal range and such strength in his singing that he makes each song come alive with emotion - it is as though he truly feels the words. The lyrics are passionate and speak to every heart. Alejandro sings of love lost, love gained and love which one hopes for. If you enjoy romantic Spanish ballads, you will love this cd - there is not one bad song on it! The bonus? He is GORGEOUS!

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite CD
When I first heard this all I could do was weep...it made me feel emotions long gone from my life. It's the most romantic of all his recordings, and the beauty of it is overwhelming. If you want to renew your heart and lift your spirit, this will do it. 6 of the 10 songs are written by Kike Santander, an extraordinary poet and composer. That his poetry has found Alejandro's voice and soul to express them is a magical, and I'm sure fated, event. One of Kike's songs, "En El Jardin", is a duet with Gloria Estefan, and they have a lovely vocal blend. This is no ordinary, nice CD. It's a life-changing, powerful experience, and music at its very best. Gracias Alejandro, por tu musica, tu alma, tu genio.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Yo Naci Para Amarte" I was born to love this CD..lol
Alejandro Fernandez's music is captivating, absolutely mind boggling. Every time I listen to my favorite song "Yo naci Para Amarte" I literally have to force myself to stop the repeat button on my CD player. You know you love a song when you listen to it in your car, then you find yourself circling corners cause your just not ready to stop that song from playing yet. I love his ballads so much that I added them to my performances. I was raised on Latin music, I love it so much that I became a Latin Jazz singer. When I sing "Yo Naci Para Amarte" I get a good 5 or 10 tear droppers from the audience. When you're performing to one of Alejandro's songs, You have to bring it! I'm a female so I get to play around with the melodies. I've practiced his ballads for so long that I make myself cry when I sing them. Alejandro is my Latin version of SADE & STING. ABSOLUTELY TALENTED!! This Album is like a drug... You'll always be addicted .. Honestly, I'm listening to it right now on my headphones. And I can't stop it from playing. That's it! I'm hooked. lol

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
Absolutely one of my favorites! I have been listening to it daily since purchasing this CD. Every song is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Dream!
I have been teaching Spanish language in a high school setting for 8 years now. I have always liked to use contemporary music in my classes to show grammar in action and culture as it lives within songs. A student from the Spanish Club suggested I get this CD. At that point, several years ago now, I hadn't heard of Alejandro. I purchased the CD and WOW! The lyrics just blew me away. I now use his music in class and my students just love it! There is nothing quite like a nice romantic Latin singer to get my chatty teenage girls to listen and pay strict attention...after, of course, they have had their say about his looks. His music reaches my students, and for that I will always be grateful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Concert
This is just pure professionalism. These past 2 years have been great for Victor Manuelle, and he deserves it.His music, his voice, everything makes this cd outstanding.I had the chance to go see him in Washington D.C. a few days ago.The concert was very much like the one on the cd and he sang a few more songs from his past productions. I hope they release a DVD of one of his concerts soon. This cd is a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of Carnegie!!
Victor's live performance is very impressive! The quality of his voice does not diminish without the aid and benefit of a recording studio--not many artists can accomplish this! The live band furtherenhances the listening experience, making it soar to heights so beautiful and soothing, without overshadowing Victor's brilliance! This is a MUST have for any Victor Manuelle fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love It Love It Love It
I am new to Lounge but knew I loved Austin Powers-type music so I took a chance on this one and this is my favorite CD. I need two copies, one for my car and one for the house! Many of the artists weren't familiar to me but it was love at first listen with Ann-Margret's 13 Men (first track), then an elevator-muzak style Girl from Ipanema and the classics Soul Bossa Nova and Mais Que Nada (you'll know it when you hear it). House of Bamboo is so much fun as is Hot Barbeque and a different version of Dave Brubeck's Take Five. It's all great - run, don't walk, to get out your martini glasses. Oh, and last but not least, the inside jacket is jam-packed with career bios of each artist. This is a must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars We play this every Thursday during our Martini Thursdays
This CD has it all. It is great. All you have to do is make some martinis, put this CD on. As soon as Ann Margaret starts with "13 Men" it sets the scene.

5-0 out of 5 stars This it the optimum CD to sip martinis to
Of all the collections of vintage tunes, this is my favourite. Is it because it begins with Miss Ann-Margaret singing about her "Thirteen men"? Maybe. But every song just intensifies the grooviness of this album. Hearing Soul Sauce is bound to make you into a much cooler and hipper individual. "Comin' home baby" is just a gem with that crazy cool Mel singing / talking stern to his baby. It just gets better and better. "I'm not talking" is a jazzy swinger that ends the album nicely. Perfect for semi-formal parties where you want to add a touch of class and show your unique style.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bossa nova tunes
This is a selection of tunes any jazz lover or party goer will be able to groove with. With classic tracks like Baby Elephant Walk, this album offers lots easy fun. If you liked the theme song to Austin Powers your in luck, Soul Bossa Nova (the tracks actual name) is just one of the many jivin' boppers you'll find here. A great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot Jumpin' Daddys!

Jorge Negrete may have been Mexico's first cinematic ranchera hero, but perhaps because of his premature death in 1953, Pedro Infante surpassed him in the number of hit movies and recordings. And like that of Negrete, Infante's fantastic recording output has been constantly released in new compilations. This collection has most of his signature hits, including "Cien Años," a heartbreak tune about being abandoned, and "Paloma Querida," an old standard reinvented by Infante when he sings with cool detachment about love's inspiration. Infante was untrained, his approach was simple but emotive, yet he was talented enough to make unforgettable such other classics as Agustin Lara's "Mujer" and "Amor de Mis Amores," and the uplifting bolero "Amor a la Distancia." Infante died in a plane crash in 1957 but is immortalized in his movies and music. --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful singer, horrible recording
I love Pedro Infante. There is noone that can sing like him. That is why when I bought this CD I was truelly dissapointed because it was hard to hear his magnificiant voice. This recording appeared to sound like some took his original LP and put a sheet over the microphone, he sounded so muffled. I truelly love this artist, and becuase of that I realy hated how they rerecorded his songs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Songs by a Great Singer
What more can be said about such a great natural voice? The songs are great, but the recording quality is not so sharp on this CD. Needless to say, the songs were not recorded in the studios of today. The lyrics, and voice of Pedro Infante, are a joy to hear and one is tempted to sing along, or just sit and enjoy. (In case the reader is unfamiliar with Pedro Infante, the reader should know all songs are sung in Spanish)

5-0 out of 5 stars PEDRO INFANTE PURE FEELINGS, LOVE, HAPPINESS AND PEACE
I LOVE THE CD CALLED LAS ROMANTICAS DE PEDRO INFANTE, I HAVE NOT FOUND ANOTHER MUSIC FROM ANOTHER ACTOR THAT GIVES ME SO MUCH PLEASURE FEELINGS AND ALL DIFFEREND KINDS OF FEELINGS.THERE ARE NOT WORDS TO EXPLAIN HOW GREAT PEDRO INFANTE WAS AS A MUSICIAN AND AS AN ACTOR. HE IS A LEGENDARY AND HIS MUSIC WOULD BE ALIVE FOREVER AFTER. EVERYTIME I LISTEN TO A NEW SONG FROM PEDRO INFANTE, I EXPERIENCE A NEW FEELING OF PLEASURE AND EXCITEMENT INCOMPARABLE TO NO ONE. I LOOK FORWARD FOR SONGS THAT I HAVE NOT HEARD YET, FOR MY COLLECTION OF PEDRO INFANTE'S MUSIC. THAT IS MY PERSONAL OPINION, WHAT IS YOURS?

4-0 out of 5 stars Pain and elation, all at once
Pedro Infante was one of those rare artists, who can command respect and pity at the same time. his music, his songs are achingly beautiful, and yet to know he died so young is a heartbreaker. Ramiro bur is right on the money in his bio essay in the "Billboard Guide to Tejano and regional Mexican Music," on Billboard Books: "In the history of Mexican pop culture, there has never been an artist who captured the hearts and minds of Mexicans like the ranchera singer/film actor Pedro Infante." 5-0 out of 5 stars Heavenly
Having never heard this woman sing I had only seen her name. With the plethora of female artists around it is hard to sort out the mediocre from the outstanding without breaking the bank. I was turned on to this artist recently by a good friend and have since listened to Tania sing incessantly. Perfect for those quite moments, this CD has accompanied me on my mornings hikes. By the time I reach the 1500 ft. elevation I am soaring well beyond the clouds on the wings of Tanias lovely voice. Since this is a collection of hits the arrangements are all very different but all outstanding. There are minimilist accompanyments but it works well because her voice is so lovely. At other times the songs have a jazzy flow to them, puntuated by sexy sax that further adds to her seductive voice. Often the songs have a Mexican flavor, complete with mariachi. At other times they bear testement to her own ethnicity with a Peruvian sound. Whatever the arrangement it is superably done, with lush accompanyments, including strings and harp, befitting an angelic voice for the ages. She reminds me of Lila Downs but much more sophisticated and polished. There is not a dog in the bunch, nothing but winners on this CD. This is one of those CD's that sounds better and better with each listening, as you become more familiar with the voice the message becomes clearer and clearer. It is hard to pick favorites but without doubt the four Jose Alfredo Jimenez penned songs are outstanding, particularly one of my all time faves "Cuando Sale La Luna." Her version gives me goosebumps, it is hauntingly beautiful. An interesting number is the Sting pop tune from a few years back entitled "Fragile"...........with it's repetitive phrasing "how fragile we are".... only this is in Spanish. It is beautiful just as so much of this CD is. I look forward to exploring more of this artists music but for starters this is an outstanding representation. This CD is guarateed to take you to heaven and back with Tania's beautiful voice.

5-0 out of 5 stars magical
I first heard this amazing singer a few weeks ago on a "Mexico, Voz y Sentimiento" CD that had the exquisite "Cuando Sale la Luna" on it, and immediately bought this great compilation, which has 19 additional songs that are a joy to hear.

"Concierto para Una Voz", with a piano and strings accompaniment is a rare gem, as is the long (7:51 minutes) "Alfonsina y el Mar" sung to a harp solo. "Tres Palabras" is a fabulous duet with Miguel Bose, and her interpretation of "Gracias a la Vida" is a marvel...but in nearly 75 minutes of music, there isn't a dull moment on this CD.

I've never enjoyed listening to a female voice as much as Tania's, not only for the beauty of her sound, but also for the artistry of her style, and I can't conceive of anyone on the planet not being captured by the magic of it also. This is heavenly music for the whole world, whether you understand Spanish or not.

There is only a song/composer/time list on the insert, but the guys will like the cover photo...she looks like a sultry belle, but wait 'til you hear the loveliness of her voice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking!
Concierto Para Una Voz (a capella), Gracias a La Vida, and Alfonsina y El Mar alone make this CD a Tour-de-Force for anyone who likes superb chanteusses and their great performances.

A Peruvian gift, Miss Libertad enfuses her songs with a whole rainbow of subtle emotions. ... Read more
