Los Hombres Calientes is an impressive debut by the New Orleans-based band of the same name led by veteran percussionist Bill Summers (Headhunters, Herbie Hancock) and young lions Irvin Mayfield on trumpet and Jason Marsalis on drums. Respect does not have to mean dull, and this sextet draws smartly from Afro-Cuban tradition and jazz. Moreover, in their mix of originals and Afro-Cubanized standards, Summers & Co. are not afraid to take chances. In "Rhumba para Jason," Mayfield growls, moans, and cries over a light, exact rumba groove. "Stardust" suggests a Brazilian-flavored bolero. More intriguingly, the music has a lived-in feel--both when it suggests an urban, genteel ballroom ("Victor el Rojo," "Stardust") and when it evokes a Caribbean neighborhood backyard rich with echoes of Africa ("Ye Ye O"). This is a band worth following. --Fernando Gonzalez ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Debut CD by any band any time
This CD is absolutely beautiful. It is a great debut. It is mostly afro-cuban with some New Orleans soul (Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers sings "El Barrio" a sister song of "The Ghetto". It displays the unbelievable potential of two very young musicians, Jason Marsalis and Irvin Mayfield and the abilities of a seasoned veteran (Bill Summers). This CD won the Billboard Latin Music Award for Contemporary Latin Jazz Album of the Year in 2000 even though it was released first in 1998. Their second CD is even better than this one, and I can't wait for their 3rd.

1-0 out of 5 stars A big disappointment
I went to see this group live in Houston last night and bought this CD before the concert started. Unfortunately, I should have waited till intermission and saved the money instead. Not knowing anything about Los Hombres Calientes I expected a true Latin Jazz group as advertised in their billing. Unfortunately this group does not have one ounce of Latin blood or spirit among them and it shows in their music. One of the pieces they attempted last night was Mandinga, a great Cuban guaracha/son which they simply botched. Los Hombres Calientes must be trying to capitalize on the current popularity of Latin music, given their name and billing, however they should call themselves The Hot Men and play New Orleans jazz instead, a genre better suited for their style. If you want to listen to a real Mandinga, buy the Ruben Gonzales version on World Circuit.

5-0 out of 5 stars The hottest thing in jazz today.
If my house were burning down and I could only save one disc, this would be it. Combining the intensity and passion of Latin music with the deep, deep soul of New Orleans, Los Hombres Calientes has created one of the greatests jazz recordings in recent memory. From the familiar strains of "Stardust" to the very Cuban "Rompey Saraguey", this album weaves the big Latin sound and Big Easy together in such a seamless way that, although it is very fresh, you wonder why no one has ever thought of it before. All these band members have their own solo projects going, and I for one hope that they continue to play together and make many more of these wonderful discs. I saw them at the Funky Butt in New Orleans, and they are even more fiery in concert. May the trinity of Summers, Marsalis and Mayfield bless us with great music for many years to come!!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Cookin' With Fire"
Disregarding the fact that some of the members of this group are friends of mine, I think that this album is fabulous. The CD expresses more than simply music. It expresses a feeling that can only be inspred by true musicianship and giftedness. This group wraps themselves in the the center of the Latin Jazz idiom and basks in it. I am amazed at the talent of the quite young Irvin and Jason and hope that one day all musicians find and utilize the thread of life situated in the center of sound like this group has. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars listen loud and/or use headphones
Growing up on the West Coast in Cal, the music of Cal Tjader is often sampled in tv commercials, has stylistically influenced surf music/west-coast pop bands, and has infiltrated the background of many movies and tv shows. For this reason I urge the listener not to experience the music (or any form of complex instrumental music for that matter) in the way that it has been represented by popular culture, namely as subtle background music. Play it loud and/or use headphones, and dig on the complex rhythms and harmonics that Tjader and Co. are famous for. Call it "latin jazz" music if you will, to me it goes beyond category. I consider Tjader a musical genius, and this represents one of the best recordings to introduce yourself to his genius. Thank you Eddie for your good taste in Tjader's music!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great CD!
For people who would like to get into Latin Jazz, but aren't quite sure where to start, this is a pretty good way to go. It begins with Tanga - ostensibly the "first" Latin Jazz tune composedm and works its way up to younger players like David Sanchez. Along the way it does a good job of touching upon major figures in the history of Latin Jazz and derivatives of such.

My only quibble is that they should have at least made this a two CD set. A lot of fabulous music was left out, and there's more than enough to create a set similar to the Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz.

Regardless, it may be only one CD, but it's a great CD. You should buy it. ... Read more

Grammy Award-winning California-based percussionist Poncho Sanchez is a Latin-jazz superstar from the old school. His thunderous hand-drumming style is derived from Mongo Santamaria, and he performed with vibes master Cal Tjader for years before he made a name for himself as a leader. On this recording, Sanchez gives you danceable grooves for the head and the heart. Backed by a large ensemble, Sanchez travels the New World in search of Latin sounds, stylistically docking in the musical ports of Havana, New York, and New Orleans. He spices up several Afro-Cuban standards, including the festive Machito anthem "Sambia" and Tito Rodriguez's "Batiri Cha Cha." Special guest Chick Corea wrote the title track and he dazzles the ear with his Afro-Iberian pianisms on a furious folkloric rendering of Wayne Shorter's Blue Note classic, "Ju Ju." Vocalists Dale Spalding and Ledisi add the right Crescent City seasoning to "Going Back to New Orleans" and the Louis Jordan calypso jump tune, "Early in the Mornin'." With Poncho Sanchez, good grooves are just a downbeat away. --Eugene Holley Jr. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is muy fantastico!!!
For someone who has not previously known of Pancho Sanchez's charms, I was blown away by this fabulous latin collection. It is all encompassing: sensual, sibililant, rousing (and arousing!) and full of delicious latin flavor that keeps going from the first track till the last....

5-0 out of 5 stars Latin Jam
This CD jams.Chick Corea is awesome!!It has latin flavor with some serious jazz.Buy it and listen to it while going down Calle Oche (like I do on my way to work in Coral Gables).

3-0 out of 5 stars Standard Poncho
Good release, not much new. Except for the unusual lack of credit for James Gadson. Typically, Poncho's guests get top billing, but not in this case. Of course, trap drummers do not get prominence in Poncho's groups, typically.

At any rate, the material is diverse, as usual, but the fire is not there. "Soul of the Conga" is much preferred, in terms of his more recent albums. Also "Latin Soul" is a gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Latin Jazz
All I can say is that Poncho has a way with music.Latin jazz touches the heart and Poncho does very well.BUY THE CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone Loves Poncho!

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful melange of 60s Latin sounds. Aural silk!
This album brought back warm and delightful memories of my youthful experiences in the 1960s. "More", played in the only way that it should be, is an all-time favourite and is as exotic now as it was 30 years ago. "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" will be forever associated with Tony Bennett but this Latin version is equally splendid. "Desafinado" is synonymous with Laurindo Almeida and the two go together as if destiny deemed it. All told, a wonderful recording and one that should certainly form the centre-piece of the collection of even the most critical of Bossa Nova afficianados. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dizzy Gillespie must have!
Dizzy Gillespie recorded very few albums that stand the test of time. This one does. Many of the compilations contain material from the whole spectrum of his career - but this is how he sounded in 1963 with a small group that are supportive and urge him to extend himself. Sidesmen Kenny Barron and James Moody are a teriffic foil, and he'd hired Tom McIntosh to do the arrangements, and he contributes three of his own tracks. What you get is a breakneck revisit of tracks he'd recorded before together with outstanding tracks "November afternoon" and "Cup bearers" from McIntosh. The opening track "Bebop" is a real example of what Gillespie was capable of when really set alight. It's difficult to believe that Barron was only 20 when this album was recorded, he's everywhere in this album encouraging the cross play between Gillespie and Moody, whose performance was magnificent. There are other Gillespie compilations that are worth buying, but few single albums that are as complete as this. Until Verve re-release Gillespie's "The greatest trumpet of them all" this is the album to go for! ... Read more

Fusion may be an overworked word denoting an often dubious process, butThe Rough Guide to Afro-Cuba should restore anyone's faith in it. Andhistory underpins it: Cuban dance rhythms originated in Africa, were transportedduring the slave trade to Cuba, were brought back to Africa by liberated slavesin the 19th century, and were re-appropriated by indigenous African musicians inthe 20th century. At every stage in the process, the rhythms were enriched andembellished. Permeated by rumba and mbalax rhythms, this lovely compilationreflects an astonishing constancy of texture between groups recorded in Cuba andothers recorded in Africa, and its inclusion of some rare vintage stuff--theSepteto Nacional, Balla et Ses Balladins, and the "King of Highlife" E.T.Mensah--deepens its historical dimension. We also get the intricate charms ofOrchestra Baobab and the magnificent sound of Sierra Maestra, Cuba's finest sonband. The liner notes are good, but why can't they include recording dates? Soeasy to do, so frustrating when omitted. --Michael Church ... Read more

This slamming compilation features Afro-Cuban jazz acts from the Cubop record label. A great introduction to this smart but sometimes overlooked label, Viva CuBop 2 showcases mostly previously released tunes that range from material with a strong percussion focus, such as Bobby Matos and Babatunde Lea, to energetic horn-driven tunes, like those of Arturo Sandoval, Jack Constanzo, and others. Of particular note is the Constanzo cut: the fine soloists keep the energy sky-high throughout, but vocalist Marilu is the gem that makes the tune shine and shimmer. While horns, piano, congas, timbales, and bongos are the usual percussive tools of the trade, the Dave Pike and Bobby Matos tracks both feature the vibraphone, which sounds right at home amid the typically raucous accompaniment. Viva CuBop 2 works for both the curious and the knowledgeable. It's a sweaty set that should get all but the dead out of their chairs and on to the dance floor. --Tad Hendrickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just *try* and sit still
Whether you're grooving along with "Mi Tumbao", swinging with the jazzy "Baldwin's Fire", or just mellowing out with "Mujer Chicana", this cd has a *lot* to offer.
Now, let me make something clear: I don't speak Spanish, know next to nothing about Latino music, and know even less about the Latin/Cuban jazz scene. That said, I really enjoy this cd. It runs the gamut from danceable jazz with a Latin edge, to more traditional rhythms that make this white girl want to swing a sexy samba.
Largely instrumental, it fully merits the "dance" in the title without ever becoming harsh or jarring -- assuming you don't have a problem with trumpet or bongo solos. Crank it up and salsa around your kitchen, or use it as background at your next dinner party. My ultimate judgement? If you have a soft spot for jazz, or have been flirting with the Latin dance scene, give this cd a try. It's a good time and a cross cultural experience, all thrown into one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to some amazing music
This very well done set is the best album I bought in 2001. It has many of the finest sides by the original beboppers from 1944-1949.

The booklet is small, but jammed with information.

It is by no means complete, but it is a fantastic and extremely well done overview of this important strain of American music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Box Set I Own
This is an amazing collection of music! Here are the greatest bebop recordings of all time. Included, are masterpieces by Parker, Gilespie and others less known, but otherwise great musicians. Don't miss your chance to own this monument of great music. If you like modern jazz, don't hesitate in picking this collection up. No other boxed set you'll own will be this consistent in quality!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars COOL, MAN, COOL!!
Geez, where are all the reviews for this incredible British collection?? Just look at all the artists here - all recorded between 1944-1949 (and cleaned up very nicely for cd issue). This is the real deal!! If you weren't old enough to live through the bop era (like me) and want to hear examples of the coolest jazz of all time, this box is for you. The cover art is nostalgic and colorful, all discs clock in at over an hour, and the 55-page booklet is packed with photos (see Dizzy Gillespie in 1944!) and very informative. To collect all this elsewhere would cost a small fortune. I thought the first few cuts leaned a bit toward the Big Band sound, but they also offer a peek into where this great American style of music was born. This is by far the best jazz collection I own. ... Read more

I have just recently become acquainted with Enrique Chia. I have listened to piano all of my life, and this is the most beautiful piano music I have ever heard by far. This pianist is so inspired and so incredible that I am moved to tears. Not only is Chia so marvelous with the piano, the arrangements on this CD are out of this world. When I play this CD, I am unable to do anything else but listen to the beauty of each piece. I can't wait to get another of his CDs.

You will recognize many of the numbers - they are familiar. The arrangements and his interpretation of each piece make them new and totally enchanting. As jazz, this disc is a bit of an anomaly, as Xavier Cugat wasn't considered a jazz musician in the strict sense. His lively rumba- and xylophone-led ensembles do not, however, lack for pep or exoticism. They enhance the martini-tipping vibe of the Cocktail Hour series of budget-priced two-CD sets. When the band gets the full string and chorale thing going, underpinned by lively exotica rhythms on "Misirlou," "Night Must Fall," and particularly "Temptation," one can't help but imagine the movie Brazil. It's an escape into the music of nostalgia, when days were perhaps more innocent and evenings more romantic. Some of the music presented here falls dangerously close to camp by today's standards ("Walter Winchell Rumba"), and the material doesn't't quite have enough of a Latin feel to ride the current wave. But if you're out to create the mood of a carefree evening aboard a luxury liner, Xavier Cugat just might be the perfect band leader. --Wally Shoup ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Cal Tjader album
I wanted "Cal Tjader's Concert By the Sea" to be released on CD so badly. I have been enjoying my LP copy of this album (Fantasy 3295) for several years. We can all rejoice that some of the best Tjader Fantasy albums are now being reissued. And what a bonus that the trend seems to be putting the contents of two LP releases on one CD. If you buy Blackhawk Nights, Black Orchid, San Francisco Moods, Ritmos Calientes and Monterey Concerts(Live) you'll have the cream of the recordings of Tjader and his greatest groups. As this release of M.C.(Live) shows, Cal Tjader was one of the greates jazz musicians America produced. This is swinging, sophisticated jazz in that 1950's style. The remastered sound is excellent. Put this at the head of your wish list. You'll thank me.

Fittingly, Tito Puente's final album (save for a collaboration with Eddie Palmieri) finds the great bandleader-percussionist taking a young audience into the past with an in-concert set of classics including the title track, "Ban Ban Quere," and, of course, "Oye Como Va." The energy never wanes as Puente visits his many styles ("Cha Cha Cha Mambo," for one) and tempos. Particularly hot is the percussive breakdown on "Guaguanco Margarito," which is both smashing and subtle in the way of only the very finest jazz. "I'm gettin' to ya!" the ebullient Mambo King exclaims more than once between songs; he sounds as if he were just as pleased as in the midcentury years he spent inventing this music. Mambo Birdland won a 2000 Grammy (for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Performance), Puente's fifth. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Get up and dance!
I am something of a neophyte to Latin music, and I'm glad I started with this record. The enthusiastic playing and intricate rhythms make it almost impossible to remain in one's chair while listening. One is inspired to get up and move. The ensemble playing is outstanding and the energy is palpable and infectious. This group gets into a groove and never gets out.

Some of the ensemble singing is a bit out of tune. The men's ensemble voices in particular tend to be a touch flat. But the rhythm's the thing here, and it's rock solid. All of the instrumental performances are very polished.

The tunes on this album are heavily folk-influenced (and for all I know they may all be folk songs). It gives one a sense of the history behind the later incarnations of latin jazz. If you buy this CD expecting contemporary Latin jazz, you are in for a surprise. But you won't be disappointed.

I would recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates jazz or Latin folk music. I especially recommend it to those who like to dance!

5-0 out of 5 stars A history lesson...
If you've recently discovered salsa dancing and your spine now tingles whenever you read the words "salsa" or "mambo" then this review (and album) is for you. Mambo Birdland is especially enjoyable for the newcomer to latin dance music because of the little bits of history and explanation that Tito Puente gives between tracks. Forgive me for saying this but the title track "Mambo Birdland" seems a little artificial and somewhat uninspired but all of this is forgotten when the next song comes on..."Juventud Del Presente" will make you melt. You will be transported back in time to the age of your grandparents when life was simple and innocent, the dance halls clean and classy, and popular dance had some style. You will find yourself in the place of your youth where you met your first love and finally found the courage to ask for a dance. Where, with that special person in your arms and the great music playing in the background, you tasted heaven...okay, I'm starting to lose myself here...the next track, "Ban Ban Quere", is an equally impressive tune and super-fun to dance to. It gives you so much energy to work with on the dance floor. You won't be able to stop yourself from moving. Other honourable mentions go to "Oye Mi Guaguanco" which contains some entrancing vocals, incredible trumpet solo improvisation, all while retaining supreme danceability. The classic tune "Ran Kan Kan" has a very new arrangement. Gone is the great xylophone play of older versions but the new one will grow on you with time and you'll learn to love it. The above-mentioned tracks alone are worth the price of admission. This album oozes with dance energy. Listen to it and you will love it. Dance to it and you will appreciate its magnificence!

5-0 out of 5 stars Addicting Latin Jazz by The Legend!
I am very honored to have met and shaken Tito Puente's hand in 1997 when he came out to Yoshi's Jazz Club here in the Oakland-San Francisco area. Much like his energetic and charmastically flawless performance that evening, "Mambo Birdland" is a definitive live performance by him. Once more, interludes of speech by the Timbale Master is a wonderful addition considering that this is his last album (aside from his "Obra Nuestra" with pianist Eddie Palmieri).

Each track is definitely upbeat and pure Latino jazz (Tito was known for loathing the term "salsa" to describe this great genre of music), graced with great vocals by Frankie Morales and a spectacular Latin jazz orchestra. Tito combines many traditional rhythms and beats like the cha-cha ("Cha-Cha-Cha Mambo"), cumbia, mambo, and more. His back-up orchestra is also absolutely incredible, each piece of brass is distinguishing and impeccable in their playing. Overall, this is one fine recording that's a must for anyone's music collection. Most of all, this final recording by Tito Puente is an awesome testimony of how grand a figure he IS to the overall spectrum of music.

Yes, Tito will be missed gravely, but like Ella Fitzgerald, Tito Rodriguez and Count Basie, their awesome body of work lives on!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tito Puente left us a musical banquet
This album is just incredible. It has the quality of a studio album, and the energy and "sabor" of a live performance. Recorded live at the legendary Birdland Jazz Club in NYC, it really deserved the Grammy it received. I was very saddened at the news of Puente's passing, but his music will keep him alive for many years to come. The instrumental title track, Mambo Birdland, is just spectacular. Also great are Ban Ban Quere, Donde Está Miguel, Cha Cha Mambo, Mi Mamita, Mambo Gozón, and the last two, Ran Kan Kan and Oye Como Va.

We will miss Puente's smile and exuberance, but we don't have to miss his music. Mambo Birdland is definitely a must buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars TITO PUENTE- MAMBO IN BIRDLAND
I wish to honor the departed "King of Latin Music", Tito Puente. In this great album, Tito brought us back to the glory days at the Palladium, the Tropicana, etc. It was in his nature to please his fans, so he gave us this gem featuring some of his old hits from the 50's. Like a fan mentioned, the voice of Santitos Colon is about the only thing missing from this great album! Farewell and God Bless You, dear old friend! ... Read more

Nestor Torres is a young composer and flute player with a '70s-style, synth-heavy, Latin light-jazz sound. The musicianship is slickly professional and the tracks are well recorded. There is some authentic percussion playing heard here and there, so why have the producers opted for programmed trap drums throughout? Torres seems like he really wants to get something across and gets some good licks in. He is obviously a capable flautist with a secure technique and he has interesting ideas. However, the overall impression given on this album is that Torres is either playing to an audience that prefers their clavés and montunos predigested or has seriously underestimated how much of the real thing they can take. Listeners who enjoy soft jazz and mainstream Latin pop will eat this up, but fans of the real deal should look elsewhere. With Marc Antoine, Richard Bona, Kim Waters, and Dave Samuels. --Christina Roden ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Haven't gotten tired of it yet!
I listen to this almost every morning over a cup of coffee and a journal and Bible; There doesn't seem to be a better way of starting the day.Torres' music does not interfere or become annoying as you do other things, but sometimes I do find myself just sitting back from the books and revelling in the sheer beauty of the compositions.I also recommend Humberto Ramirez' "Aspects" (latin-jazz trumpet)and Editus' "Calles y Vientos" (jazz/classical violin-guitar-percussion) VERY highly!!

I attended a live concert by Nestor Torres at Kennesaw State University on 8/22/99 where he performed several cuts from "Treasures of the Heart".He had the audience in his hand for the entire concert(outdoor venue), as well as dancing in the aisles!

An album that's justifiably titled. Carlos "Patato" Valdes is indeed a legend of Cuban percussion, having played with Herbie Mann and Tito Puente among others, before leading his own ensembles. This record compiles tracks from his two Ritmo y Candela recordings of the mid-'90s, and an absolute joy it is. Patato's congas percolate at the front of the mix, heading a band comprised of some superb, and often adventurous (check out the piano on "Son de Patato"), Cuban jazz players. But things become especially interesting when African players join the mix on "Kora Son" and "Senor Blues/Mbuka Enoka" as the Horace Silver classic mutates into West African melody. Throughout it's Patato who's in command, his playing an inspiration to the younger generation accompanying him. He might be in his 70s here, but like the Buena Vista Social Club musicians, he's still very much at the top of his game and making a very joyful noise indeed. Age is nothing but a number. --Chris Nickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of Cuban Sabor (Flavor)
I love the fact that the tracks are long unlike some Latin Jazz CDs this one lets loose with music that makes you want to jam till you cant no more. Great production, great musicians! Patato is unreal! I would love to see him live! Tracks 1,2,3,4 & 9 are my favorites, but the entire cd is great

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Percussion!
As a new-comer to Cuban music, I loved this album. Great sound. Great beat. My Cuban co-worker in the next office heard it thru the office walls and had to come over and borrow my cd. I didn't think he would give it back!

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect.......
simply one of the best afro-latin albums ever produced. a must for patato fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Patato-the legend, the drum!
Patato shines through on this overall excellent recording. If you like your Afro-Cubano a bit on the "Afro" side, then this recording is bound to please. For those new to the genre, Patato is not only an original, but perhaps one of the foremost innovators in the development and advancement of the conga drum sound. He has played with all of the greats, including the late Tito Puente. Orestes Vilato plays timbales on many of the cuts, which is also a plus for lovers of percussion. Goza!

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Varied Collection
Thank you to 6 Degrees for reissuing this. Not only is Patato a legendary conguero, but this CD contains some of the most interesting and varied arrangements in Latin Jazz. From stark horn stacking to freeform flute, from heartfelt vocal workouts to slinky after hours textures, each track is beautiful. Latin music afficianados may know more about this than I do, but it sounds wonderful to my ears! ... Read more
