3-0 out of 5 stars Good album, but sounds a little off
I'd give it 4 stars but the introduction tracks are annoying and the "live" sound sounds fake to me. The crowd feels artificial, the recordings sound almost studio like, and the segways don't sound right.
If you can get past that, the music is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic album
Put this on when you want to dance!

5-0 out of 5 stars Chock full of great artists
This is truly a CD worth having. It's full of great music from some of the best musicians in Salsa music. Definitely a keeper. I enjoy listening to it in my car as well as when I'm dancing with friends. One of my favorite tracks is from the Awesome band from Japan, Orquestra De La Luz. I love the live sound! Higly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Best Of The Best!"
This album is terribly infectious! Can't stop listening to it. If you claim to be a salsa fan then this compilation of music is a must have. Let's just say it's like having the BEST of the BEST. One of the very best albums I've ever bought, ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is HOT! HOT! HOT!
This album is chock full of latin flavor. You will not be able to just sit down and listen to this. The music will have you on your feet from beginning to end. It is definitely worth buying. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Possibly the Greatest Flamenco Guitar Cd ever heard...
Largely considered the finest Flamenco Guitarist on his generation, (possibly ever), this is some of the most affecting beautiful composed music I've heard in recent times. Paco's ability to carry a song with just his guitar and the most subtle of backing musicians is quite awe-inspiring. He moves from complex delicate guitar rhythmic arrangements, to furiously intense rapid fire passages that will almost certainly invoke an response of complete awe & admiration for what he does better than anyone else. This is an Anthology of (a Limited 2 Cd version) that complies his two 'Antologia' albums into 2 disks (1 disk for each Anthology), and for a double album that weights in at over 24 tracks, you'd think that you'd have had your fill of Contemporary Flamenco, way before then....but you'd be wrong, spreading the listening experience a disk at a time (over 2 days) not only left me with an unquenchable thirst for more of his work, but has that astute honour of being the most remarkable album, I've heard for sometime, and that's with some truly exceptional competition, utter genius. And it should also be noted that this is a perfect introduction into Paco's sublime music if your new to this particular artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Different moods and stages of the virtuoso flamenco artist
Paco de Lucia's anthology edited by Uni/Polygram Latino consists of two volumes (one CD per volume) comprehending a varied number of themes from the different stages of the virtuoso modern flamenco guitarist and composer. Please allow me to cover both volumes in one review. Considering Paco's long career and extensive material I have to admit that the compilation was done with excellent taste and offers great value. Although the material is aimed to those listeners who probably don't own any of De Lucia's albums or just a few recordings, nevertheless, they managed to include a good selection of many of Paco's main modern compositions -in my opinion where his value is- that he still plays today during his many tours. Among them: "Solo Quiero Caminar", "Rio Ancho", "Zyryah", "Tio Sabas", "Chiquito", and "Entre Dos Aguas". In addition, the album includes some of the older and more traditional pieces as well as some from earlier recordings, and a movement from the "Concierto de Aranjuez" (live recording by Paco with orchestra). Something inside tells me that he ideal anthology that would have made justice to De Lucia would definitely have been two double CDs with more live material and collaboration efforts with Al Dimeola and John Mc Laughling. But, again this is an opportunity to own many or most of his best at a convenient price in two separate volumes. If you really are starting to listen to Paco De Lucia I recommend you start with Volume 2 as I think the material introduces better the different moods of the artist and allows you to better sense his musical evolution. If you then want more go for Vol. 1 to complete Paco's main repertoire, and/or get "Luzia" (his last release), simply because today he is playing better than ever. Paco changed the sound and the depth of Flamenco and of Spain's modern music not by playing strange noises, crazy effects, or soloing out of tune, but by adding alternatives and expanding the music scales and improvising over the rigid structure of traditional Flamenco and Spanish music. Thank you Paco for allowing the Sapnish folklore and sentiment to grow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Paco De Lucia Antologia Vol 1
[....] This CD is one of the best in my collection. Paco de Lucia is able to bring out emotion from a guitar that no one else is equal to. Every one of the selections are superb - full of passion and emotion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Early Paco
Possibly the greatest living flamenco guitarist to come out of Spain in the modern era, Paco de Lucia is arguably the best contemporary flamenco guitarist. He is definately one of the most productive with an extensive archive that rarely dissappoints. This collection of early works is fabulous. The technical magic he performs with such dexterity with his fingers is truly amazing, it is mesmerizing. That anyone can produce such fluid rapid fire attacks on the guitar is a testament to the fact that some individuals are truly blesssed. That we can share his talents via CD's is something to not be missed. The songs on this superb collection are vintage Paco, before his forays into jazz expermentation, just beautiful guitar work. The styles displayed on this CD run the gamut from bulerias, tanguillos, tangos to rhumbas, all with exceptional skill. This is, for the most part quiet music, although it is so fiery that it definately stimulates the mind. The guitar as the focal point of interest is no easy task unless of course the talents are those of Paco de Lucia. There is a song that is very lovely that he performed in the film "Flamenco" entitled "Solo Quiero Caminar", complete with accompanying vocals ala estilo gitano. Another beautiful track is his rendition of Falla's "Danza Ritual del Fuego" in which he performs with such warmth and rhythmn that is countered by hand clapping and whirling flute that it is no wonder it is "El Amor Brujo." All of the tracks are strong and display his numerous talents by allowing him to show the many sides of flamenco. Some of the songs have a "jam session" feel to them as though the guitarists got together for some majica gitano. If you love flamenco you can't get enough Paco de Lucia. This is packaged to show some of his best early work, but you can't go wrong with the CD's from which these songs were taken either. An excellent example of flamenco guitar at it's finest, this is the real deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars great but...
a fantastic collection of paco's pieces but definitely not a complete one. if you're really into flamenco then this is not enough paco de lucia for you... i recommend other albums like zyryab, solo quiero caminar, almoraima, siroco, recital de guitarra (which amazon, unfortunately, does not carry in stock) and many more. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
First of all, don't pay any attention to the editorial that references the BVSC as being somehow even remotely related to this release. This is straight-up NYC Cuban Son.Not Salsa.Roberto Torres, founder of SAR Records explains a bit of what Jerry Masucci's role played in the term of "salsa" coming to be used by the masses to define virtually everything remotely Latin. There really is no "salsa."It's a b.s. term of merchandising. But, for this release...

Hermanos, you cannot get any finer outside of Fania. These are what the cats who wanted to venture outside of the Fania and Allegre record labels were laying down.If you wanted to get beyond the amazing double trombones of Colon and lofty coro of Lavoe/Betancourt/Cheo/etc, you found this. With soneros like Roberto Torres (who is a great friend/neighbor of mine in fact), trumpet legends like Chocolate Armenteros and the legendary Henry Fiol (if anyone remembers Saoco), you cannot go wrong here. That's just to name a few.

Get this, get this, get this.I cannot state that enough.Salud to, of all labels, Astralwerks for putting this out.

5-0 out of 5 stars PUT IT ON AND LET IT PLAY!!!!!
Here is one of the very reasons to buy a CD this expensive! This one is definately worth the price of admission to this banging, slamming almost heart shattering club experience. There is no reason to stop listening to these driving beats other than to catch your breath. These two DJ's really put it down with their jazzy, latin and african mixed beats.A must have for any house collection.

With CD's like this, who needs to go to a club? But there are only 2 in this package

5-0 out of 5 stars Leave your "skip track" button behind
I have to agree with all of the reviews on here, this mix is hot. It's great for: running through mountain trails, driving to work, pre & post funkin, lifting weights, and writing reviews on here (I'm listening to it as I type).I haven't decided which disc is my favorite, and maybe I really don't have to.It's nice to have music to put on that you don't have to skip around to find the few treasured songs. My favs are definitely "resist" from disc 1 (the beats melt you) and solymos/i get deep & the light from disc 2.Tons of lush vocals, but also good spoken word, latin instrumentation, and some pure deep house.

5-0 out of 5 stars My current favorite ItH.
This is really good stuff people. My favorite ItH so far.All the right elements are here. It's jazzy disco house! The track selection is choice. My favorite is Roland Clark's 'Resist'.It has a political message that really speaks to me.Very listenable, deep house at it's finest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soulfuric IS in the House!!!!!!!
I received this package in the mail yesterday and began to play it nonstop - I finally stopped playing the CDs in order to get to sleep. But as Track One, CD 2 starts: "I Can't Get No Sleep".

This is an excellent blend of the old and the new; but of course in House Music the old and the new always work together.Old tracks-"Thousand Finger Man" and "The Boss".New tracks-"Bulo" and "Nekoosa".Oh, but there are still some not quite old/not quite new tracks added for good measure. The most pleasing surprise for me, personally, came in Track Nine, CD 2: Help "Me Out".I've spun records with these guys in the past and they always had a knack for churning out unique recordings.Another favorite of mine (and possible half the planet) is Track Two, CD 1, "Back Together".This is what I call a future timeless classic.

Soulfuric is one of my favorite record labels; after giving this a listen it may be a favorite of yours, too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best funky house mix set for a looong time
Yup, aint no bout a doubt it, this one smokes. I usually go for the lp's as I'm a dj, but seeing the amount of choice cuts on this, I had to invest in the cd. I play it start to finish, which is unheard of in a fussy bastard like me. I appreciate and love all of the styles on this mix. Braxtons 'Boss' is a gem and the latin numbers just drive the dancefloor wild. A flawless set! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The real Carmen Miranda!
I am glad to hear a CD with Carmen Miranda singing with the Bando da Lua, the band that made her famous and that she insisted in bringing to Hollywood, when she was invited to work in this country. Beautiful!

This is her true Brazilian face before her music was [influenced] by fancy Hollywood orchestrations that had very little - better say, nothing - to do with authentic samba and Brazilian rhythms.

Great CD by the best paid (believe or not) Holywood actress of her time. God bless you "pequena notavel"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Carmen Miranda! Ay! Ay! Ay!
OK...there may be alot of songs on here that you don't know from her Hollywood films, but don't let that stop you. She is marvelous and fun! Another reviewer said they were disappointed with this...ignore them and buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Carmen, Carmen, Carmen
I realy looked forward to this recording and when it came I p ut the CD on and was somewhat disapointed. The selection of songs seemed to be almost the same from one song to another because of the background music, in most of the musical numbers It was boreing and I was sad over this because I know Carmen Miranda from the Motion Picture Musicals. I felt The old standby songs..#4 Co,Co,Co,Co,Co,Co,Ro,#5 I,Yi,Yi,Yi,Yi,Like You Very Much,#23 Tico-Tico was enjoyable because of being familar with them. The #12 song was fun, I heard this for the first time.I perked up and really enjoyed #24 & #25 because it was a full orchestra backing her up. Just like in the Movies and it made me very happy listening to them. Too bad the whole album wasn't with a full orchestra background. But then hollywood really does it up and when you hear it different it's not as grand. Nevertheless, I would recommend this to others and maybe the more I play this CD, the more I will like it. Numbers #24 & #25 will fill you with the glamor and excitement of this wonderful woman. I wish there was an album of just the hollywood songs on it with Caugat and the other orchestra's giving her that wonderful backup she is intitled to. ... Read more

Even though he has lived in Sweden for four decades, Bebo Valdés's playing is so poignantly Cuban that you can practically smell the cigar tobacco. Some will remember Valdes as a standout on the soundtrack for Calle 54 or from his Blue Note album El Arte del Sabor from 2001. Here, on Recuerdos de Habana, a double-disc set first released as an import in 1999, he plays with the same fire as on the above two albums. The pianist often goes it alone or is joined by his young son Rickard on timbales, while occasionally they are joined by other percussionists or bass. Regardless of the setting, Valdés’s playing sparkles as he rolls from bolero to mambo to guajira with the same ferocious yet romantic piano style that he taught his son Chucho. Along with 28 songs, fans also get a fascinating interview and music lesson in English with the pianist. As good a self-portrait as one could hope for, Recuerdos is required listening for Cuban jazz fans. --Tad Hendrickson ... Read more

With his brassy sound, Arturo Sandoval is a glorious throwback to a tradition of big-band trumpeters who cast their voices over pumping horn sections, from Swing Era greats like Bunny Berigan and Harry James to bop players such as Dizzy Gillespie and high-note specialist Maynard Ferguson. Sandoval is most adept when he's fusing the rhythmic vitality of his Cuban heritage with the complexities of bebop, invoking the spirit of Gillespie's pioneering 1947 big-band efforts. It's in sharpest relief on the masterful take of Tadd Dameron's bop classic "Hot House," but the rhythms are churning and the brass are wailing elsewhere as well, as "Sandunga" and "Tito," named for the presence of timbales great Tito Puente. --Stuart Broomer ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing - Buy this
I heard this album in the car of a trumpet-playing friend and the first track certainly hooked me in with about a 2-octave leap and several other things i had never heard from a trumpet before. I never believed that a trumpet had no limit on its upper range until I heard track #8 (Mam-bop, not to be confused with Hanson's awful song...that's another story) Not only is Arturo an amazing trumpeter, but the "guests" on this album - Tito Puente, Michael Brecker on sax, etc. add a ton to the overall effect. An outstanding album for any trumpet fan, Latin fan, or music aficionado in general...

5-0 out of 5 stars HOT LATIN JAZZ WORTH 10 STARS **********
I own several Jazz and Latin Jazz albums and this one deserves to be in the top 5 in both categories; Arturo es simply FABULOSO, his style, performance, technique, everything is as great as it gets, he is a hyper-genius and shows it in every song; the highlights are Funky Cha Cha Cha, Rythm of our World (that tributes Latin and Brazilian Jazz concepts blended perfectly), No se tu (with a superb vocals by Patti Austin), Sandunga (perhaps the best cut in the album), and Mam-Bop. Do not let this gem pass you by, You will never regret adding this piece of art in your gallery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely deserving of the Grammy it won!
Arturo was spot-on with this album, and also made it appeal to the commercial public as well, because he is such an exciting player. Fans of Latin jazz be it if they're a fan of the style or not will really love this album. Arturo plays great, and has some amazing guests featured here as well. Most notably, one of my favorite tenor saxophonists, a former Maynard Ferguson bandmember, Chip McNeill! This guy plays amazingly well and definitely deserved a spot on this gem. "Funky Cha Cha" is the perfect opener, just comes right in blasting. Here Michael Brecker guests on tenor saxophone and plays some good stuff, and Arturo plays an exciting solo full of his usual bebop-flavored flurries. "Rhythm Of Our World" has a brilliantly played slow introduction from Arturo, and then segways into a faster pace. This song really swings and has a lot of soul. It pays tribute to all styles of Latino music! "Hot House" is a famous composition by Tadd Dameron and Arturo and company really bring it to life in this masterful take with some wonderful solos. The band is very tight as well. Arturo plays his own lead trumpet amazingly. "No Se Tu" is a tasty vocal feature for Patti Austin with great playing from Arturo as well. Patti really put a lot into this song, and it shows. Very romantic and sweet. "Sandunga" is a firey piece that really gives the opportunity for the soloists to rip it. The song is dedicated to all the girls who can really dance. "Tito" is a tribute to Rican music king Tito Puente, and Tito himself is featured on this song. Fans of Tito will really love this. Arturo did a great thing by making this song. "Closely Dancing" is a slower, more romantic song which really comes to life. Arturo plays it very passionately. My favorite track on the set is "Mam-Bop"! Most will probably agree. The tune is just insane. From Arturo screeching Double High D's throughout and trading with himself, taking it up an octave then back down then back up. However, my favorite part is the end, where they quote a bunch of bebop tunes, including "Salt Peanuts"! I also noticed "Straight, No Chaser" and "Good Bait" (which is also a composition by Tadd Dameron, co-written by Count Basie). The others were familiar but I could not think of them off the top of my head. "New Images" is a brilliant ballad with Arturo really showing off his control in the upper register, ending his emotional solo on an E over Double C. This song is a bit like "Closely Dancing", they are actually similar. "Cuban American Medley" is a great, fun tune. They play American songs such as "Going Back Home To Indiana", "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" and "Little Lulu Theme" in a Latin setting. This medley is a lot of fun. The last piece, "Brassman's Holiday", is an entertaining feature for trumpet, and has a joyous, almost Christmas-like feel to it.

This is a great album. It is great to know that this kind of music is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

5-0 out of 5 stars His best work ever !!!
This album is right on target. It's a great blend of jazz and Latin music. We're wearing out this CD!!!!!! If you only have one Arturo Sandoval album, make it this one.

Ten of the 13 tracks here are from the great Machito and his orchestra, which featured Mario Bauza and Charlie Parker as well the lesser-known but legendary Chano Pozo and Jose Mangual. Dizzy Gillespie and His Orchestra, including Quincy Jones and Mongo Santamaria, contribute the 16-minute "Manteca Suite." Other highlights include the first-ever-recorded Cuban jam session--"Con Poco Coco" by Andre's All Star--and "Cubop City" by Howard McGhee and his Afro-Cuboppers (basically Machito and his orchestra). These historical recordings come from the third stage of Afro-Cuban jazz. However, the first stages are essentially unavailable, making this CD as close to the genesis of Afro-Cuban jazz as you can get. Styles may have changed since these recordings were fresh, but sophisticated arrangements, searing horns, and fiery percussion have no expiration dates.--Jonathan E. ... Read more

Since arriving in New York from Cuba in the late 1990s, the phenomenal young drummer Dafnis Prieto has enlivened everything he has touched, ranging from the tradition-socking bands of Eddie Palmieri and Chico O'Farrill to the boldy innovative outfits of Steve Coleman and Henry Threadgill.About the Monks, the first album under his name, is a sparkling debut that is conveniently labeled Latin jazz, but never sits still long enough to fit that description. Leading a terrific band including trumpeter and Latin jazz specialist Brian Lynch, saxophonist Yosvany Terry and oncoming Venezuelan pianist Luis Perdomo (whose new debut, Focus Point, is highly recommended), Prieto stages a stylistic carnival. His compositions are sly charmers, thriving on the expected clave beats, but also march rhythms, bursts of Colemanesque bop-funk and slashing stops and starts. Here making like Elvin Jones with his intricate, powerfully self-contained orchestrations, there providing visceral punch with a timbales-like sound, Prieto simply won't permit a dull moment to intrude on the music. --Lloyd Sachs ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful new album
This Latin-Jazz old-timer cuts loose with a tight, funky, soul-drenched set of good old-fashioned rhythm & boogaloo... Sanchez style! On the opening track, a muscular version of "One Mint Julep," you may find yourself thinking, "Man -- that guy sounds *just like* Ray Charles!" Well, surprise -- it is! Brother Ray kicks in on a couple of tunes, and is joined on the disc by several other high-power guest artists, including Fred Wesley of the JB Horns, Billy Preston, jazzman Pee Wee Ellis, and Afro-Cuban master percussionist Francisco Aguabella, who bangs a mean bata drum on "El Tambor Del Mongo." It's a lively, earthy set that avoids, for the most part the pitfalls of the jazzier side of the Latin/Jazz equation. If you're a fan, this disc will knock your socks off!

PS - the sound on the SACD is pretty nice... and I just own a regular old CD player.

In the history of recorded music, there are a few albums that define a genre. Among them are Glenn Gould's 1955 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations and Miles Davis's hypnotic Kind of Blue. In that select realm, timbalero Tito Puente's 1957 Top Percussion is the most influential Latin jazz recording of all time. Simply put, this date is a once-in-a-lifetime summit meeting of Cuban and Puerto Rican master percussionists of Afro-Cuban music: Mongo Santamaria, Franciso Aguabella, Willie Bobo, and Julito Collazo. Together, these masters explore the endless folkloric inventions and dimensions of Cuba's complex drum music-- from the Afrocentric bembe/Santeria syncopations of "Eleguara" and "Obatala Yeza" to the clave-coded "Mon Ti," "Four by Two," and "Conga Alegre." The "hit" is the cool cha-cha "Ti-Mon-Bo," named for Tito, Mongo, and Bobo. Like their African musical forefathers, Tito Puente and his compatriots have delivered an ancestral drum message that has danced and entranced musicians and listeners for years. --Eugene Holley Jr. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The world's best latin-american percussionist- in full swing
In case anyone had any doubts -- at all -- that Tito could play the real, hardcore, pure Afro-Cuban percussion, then this album should settle that question. With Mongo Santamaria and several other percussion heavyweights on board, Tito pounds away on some of the toughest-sounding rhythm work imaginable. The second half of the album gets funkier and more slinky, with a subtle, jazzy bass added into the mix. This is a killer instrumental album, formidable and funky in every aspect. Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
A truly unbelievable record, and a wonderful introduction to both Latin percussion and the Afro/Cuban folkloric tradition. Though Puerto Rican by birth, Tito was an initiate to the Cuban Santeria religion, and in this album he pays homage to the spiritual and musical roots of the Mambo and Cha Cha styles for which he became most famous. Tito, Mongo, Willie Bobo, Julito Collazo, etc., all play at an unsurpassed level of virtuosity and creativity, maintaining a dizzying array of poly-rhythms that provide a virtual catalog of the West African rhythms that filtered through Cuba to become the Latin music we know and love today. As honest, beautiful, and interesting a record as any Tito Puente made. An absolute must for anyone with even the slightest interest in Latin music, drumming, Cuban culture and experience, Tito Puente, or even rhythm in general. Go get it!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting to Roots
Great sample of Tito's understanding of Afro music. If you're looking for actual songs/mambos you won't get it here. This is pure, unadulterated percussion and a lot of Afro-Cuban chants. There's 2 sizzling tracks with Tito and famous percussionist Willie Bobo wailing on timbales. The 12th track is one of the most beautiful afro-cuban jazz suites I've ever heard and is a testament to Tito's genuis in composition and arrangment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mr. Puente and his All-Star Ensemble
Tito Puente assembled an all-star cast of latin percussion virtuosos and afro-cuban musicians for this album, and they strut their stuff with great gusto. This album is worth the price of admission for "Ti Mon Bo" alone! Having played "Ti Mon Bo" for a good number of people with all sorts of musical tastes, the result is always the same: Jaw-dropping awe, usually followed by adjectives like "awesome" and "tight". I still often find myself thinking the same thing after what must be near 100+ listens.

This album is pure afro-cuban music, NOT the mambo Puente is most famous for. There are a good number of chants and songs laid over Puente's second-to-none percussion. His skills are still showcased, though.

On a technical note, you can hear the slight hiss of the original master tapes just before and after each track, but it is not distracting in any way during the music. In fact, it seems to add to the authenticity and charm of the album. The stereo separation and depth of sound is remarkably enveloping by today's standards, and even more by the standards of the 1950's.

To sum up: A great cast creates great music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rhythm Rules the Universe
Buy this! This is one mofo of a Latin Percussion Classic from the late '50s! In fact, every 'tune' here was recorded in one friggin' day! ONE! How long does Maddona need in the Studio to to make an album? 6 months? a Year?!

"Top Percussion," is called what it's called because it has only one tune "Night Rituals" with a full Jazz band with Doc Severinsen soloing on trumpet, everything else is layered percussion with only two jams that have even as little as a repetitive bass-line through it. FANTASTIC! Who wants that boring, horn-stuff anyway! The tunes you can hear here are off side one which is much tamer and 'traditional' than side 2 which flat out BURNz! Tunes 7 through 10 are just about the COOLEST demonstration of Virtuoso Latin Percussion playing anywhere. I usually program one or two tunes off side one for variety along with all the tunes from 7 to 10 and let it go on for hours while I work on Calculus problems or read Science News. Talk about music that puts you in a ritual-like trance! Lawd Haf Mecy! Who needs Punk Rock headaches when you have this to offend your neighbors with. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD
This CD exceeded my high expectations. Highlights for me are the title track, Monasterio de Sal, Punta Umbria, La Nina de Puerta Oscura (amazing!), and El Vito, but all of the songs are good. I've definitely got to buy some more of his CD's.

5-0 out of 5 stars A moving combination of emotions and talent
This is one of Paco de Lucia most poplar albums among modern Spanish guitar listeners. It's also a great place to start listening to De Lucia as the CD offers samples form both new and traditional Flamenco, plus other Spanish rhythms. Eight themes from De Lucia and six interpretations from other authors, among which we can distinguish two themes from the Spanish poet and also composer Federico GarcĂa Lorca. "Entre Dos Aguas" is probably De Lucia's greatest hit world-wide. The success of this composition was an unexpected surprise to De Lucia as it was the last theme to be recorded and was composed as the group improvised and played in order to fill album space. "Rio Ancho" is a well known theme from De Lucia's trio efforts with Dimeola and Mc Laughing. The version recorded in this CD is the complete original version. De Lucia's guitar playing can be easily distinguished from the rest of the group's guitarists and his soloing will stand out from most of the world's wood guitar and nylon string players. De Lucia has added a great deal to the Flamenco music style and managed to grow further into the art of improvisation which lead him to enter into a fusion of styles and rhythms. This album specifically is closer to modern or nouveaux flamenco with very few moments of fusion, however if you understand about guitar playing you will appreciate that De Lucia's solos use tonalities and scales that are adventurous and challenging to the traditional player In summary, this album is a collection of different compositions and does not bear a defined style or a one music concept like De Lucia's last CD "Luzia". Nevertheless, the material is excellent and the instrument playing and ambience is superb. Flamenco music has a unique flavour and represents a life style. De Lucia is a main representative of this art and culture.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entre Dos Aquas is OK
I'm a long time fan of flamenco music, but this is my first experience with Paco Delucia. This disk is an enjoyable mixture of nuevo and traditional. Paco's reditions of Mantilla de Feria and Panaderos Flamencos may not be as exciting as those recorded in the mid-1950's on the RCA label by Esteban DeSanlucar, but the memories they rekindled made the CD worth its price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Flamenco
I came to love flamenco by being friends with flamenco students of Juan Serrano. They led me to this artist and to this CD in particular. It is a wonderful introduction to Paco and the music of flamenco. Though some argue that he is a herectic for his fusion of other instruments and genres of music with flamenco the combination is well worth the effort.

I just saw him in the San Francisco Jazz festival and it was worth every damn penny to see him in concert from the orchestra pit. For those who are curious he plays just as clean in concert as on CD which says something for a time period that sees more studio magic than live performance.

Later when you have fallen in love be sure to get his collaborative CDs with Camaron de la Isla (yes, it is shrimp of the island) there is raw fire in those albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure BIG Band Salsa
This is true big band sound salsa, before the name salsa became popular. Originally released in 1958, You can go back and feel how great this music was back then and still feel the how great it still is today. This tells you this is a treasure chest of great music. Just enjoy and dance as if he is playing at the good old days at the Palladium Dance night,in NYC. The recordings allow you to hear clearly every instrument that was played and precise harmony of the full orchestra. Be carefull playing this while driving in the car, you will be force to pull over and dance a few cuts.

5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this!
One of Tito's tightest and most soulful albums, with sharp-sounding horn charts and funky rhythms galore. Recording with the full technical expertise of the RCA studios behind him, Puente's late '50s albums had much richer, better defined sound than competitors on smaller, independent labels, and the brass tones that distort into distorted shrillness on other albums are smooth and clear here. Great material, and a ton of tight session players who were the cream of the crop in the latin dance scene. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
A must for anyone looking for a good sample of some classic mambos, jazz suites, and one bolero from Tito.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Tito!
I'm not a mambo or or latin music aficionado, but if you just want a fun, upbeat, latin album by this music legend then I recommend this one! I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Puente's dancing music greatest album!
At the top of his Palladium days, the first record featuring singer Santos Colon, the sound of his big band... this superb collection is Puente's dancing music greatest album! Many tracks were prepared for this record and the selected ones reveal the genius of the masters, or how they select their material. Recorded circa 1957-58 Dance Mania quickly became a classical. It has endured the passage of time and it continues to be a best seller, in various re-issues. The only other Puente record at this level is Night Beat, on jazz, and perhaps some in the Ensemble Latin Jazz series. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Swinging rhythms, novel interpretations of some classics and as usual, outstanding fingerwork on the keyboards confirm why Chuco is the giant that he is in Latin Jazz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing to hear Latin Jazz from the Latin side
We're all familiar with jazzers who map their aesthetic onto a Latin template: Dizzy and Bird, Cal Tjader, McCoy Tyner, Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Joe Henderson, Jane Bunnett, and Stan Getz come to mind as artists who've successfully done that.

But how about essentially Latin artists who map a Latin aesthetic onto a jazz template? Not as many of those. Danilo Perez, Edward Simon, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Hilton Ruiz, Eddie Palmieri, Egberto Gismonti, and Jorge Dalto come immediately to mind. Interestingly, all are pianists (Gismonti is also a noted guitarist), whereas among the former, almost all are saxophonists or trumpeters.

Then there's Chucho Valdez, perhaps the Big Daddy of the latter group. Is there anyone out there with a deeper Latin rhythmic sensibility, a harder swinging approach, than the former leader of Irakere? Maybe Hilton Ruiz, but I don't think so.

Besides being the Latin jazz rhythm champ, Valdes has stuff going for him that NOBODY else does. First off, his latest disc features all Latin players. Not a name jazzer in sight anywhere. Usually, a Latin jazz disc relies on a least one or two noted Norte Americano jazz players, to give it credibility and name recognition among the main audience for this type of music. Second, Valdes is, simply, the ruling king of Latin jazz keyboard. Period. It comes out all over this disc from the opening notes of the first cut, "La Comparsa." Third, he does something I don't think I've ever heard another piano player do, namely, play Latin with his left hand and jazz with his right hand (check out his unbelievable solo beginning about the middle of Miles Davis's famous "Solar," and the feat is repeated in a short passage in "Sin Clave Pero Con Swing"). Fourth, there's some impossibly deep Latin groove hapening with this band. It's like these ritmo grooves are in their blood (check out esp. the rhythmic workout near the close of "Solar").

What's really going on here is what goes on with all the best jazz records: a tradition (Latin jazz, in this case) is perfected by the artist, then deconstructed, and finally put back together in a new way that both pays proper respect to the tradition and advances the music in new (and sometimes astounding) directions.

Thus, we get neither ungrounded, half-baked, wild expermention that sometimes characterizes the wooly avant-garde nor slavish deference to traditions that sometimes comes out of the Crescent City. Instead, we get absolutely mesmerizing jazz of the highest order. As you can probably tell, I'm wild about this disc, which I would venture to say is among the finest, if not the absolute finest, Latin jazz disc ever recorded. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars essential
The remastering on this set is outstanding.Bird was know for such things as his dexterity, speed, expanding the blues, etc. But with the great sound of these cds, you can hear Charlie Parker's beautiful tone with combos, strings, etc.The acoustic bass which is driving the rhythm can be felt and so can the "bombs" from the drummers. Desert island disc-when you can sing along with these solos you begin to appreciate this great artist.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a historic document
Actually, I've listened to some of the Verve material with
Charlie Parker, as released in 2003 ( the master takes) ...
and clearly, I feel there's *** too much noise reduction ***
that was applied to the music.

Granted, I've never heard these recordings in their
original 33 rpm, or 78 rpm form, either.

But, the alto sax and other instruments seem to show a
narrow range, (a lot narrower), than Monk's sessions
recorded in 1948 and early 1950's, for example, and similar

recordings, including Louis Armstrong's material that
was recorded even earlier than that ...

I don't mind hiss too much, so long as the full, dynamic,
real wide-open sound of each instrument is captured. I just
feel it's false to claim this set has fabulous sound. It
actually, doesn't. It's muffled ...

If you want to hear phenomenal sound, listen to Miles Davis
Complete at the Plugged Nickel. Now that's sound !!!

The Verve material, with Miles accompanying Bird, on several

numbers is great....

The packaging and artistic concept, is top-notch...although
a few hand-drawn cartoons or sketches are a bit amateur ..
or childish.

I dislike the 4 or 5 theatrical pieces, in which a chorus
of adults sing together, as if this was in a musical
onstage, or some kind of black and white motion picture...
quite dated, and obsolete. But Bird's accompaniment is
simply, brilliant. Genius.

On the whole, this is a historic document....

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Complete Verve Master Takes
Don't get me wrong -- the music is fantastic and the sound is terrific. I am happy to have purchased it in this form.

BUT, this assuredly is NOT the complete studio master takes of Parker's Verve/Clef material:

Missing are:
(1) Repetition, from the same day as "The Bird"
(2) A few Latin-flavored sides from late 1948 and early 1949: No Noise; Mango Mangue; Okiedoke
(3) Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite
(4) Two songs from a 1950 session with Coleman Hawkins -- Celebrity (Celerity) and Ballade.

Items (2) and (4) are on Parker's "South of the Border: Verve Latin Jazz Sides".

I guess they must have REALLY wanted to squeeze it on three CDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable remaster!
The audio quality of this box set alone is worth the price. It sounds AMAZING. Verve did an excellent job with this box set; the players are the best of the best (no surprise there, you gotta be good to play with Bird), and it features some of Charlie's best tunes (Now's the Time, Confirmation, Laird Bird, Bloomdido, Au Privave, Swedish Schnapps). Seriously though, the clarity of this recording is amazing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very impressive
I started getting into 50's Latin music about a year ago, and this cd made it's way to me. It's at times soothing and at times infectiously energetic. I dance to this cd while cooking or getting dressed - it's one of those cd's you dance to no matter what you're doing. Great big band, hip-shakin' stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Tito Puente Vol 1
To the writer Karen Tito Puente is not Cuban, he is Puerto Rican. This CD is the best. Never judge a CD by its cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is Music!!!
I was inspired to buy this CD after listening to "Talk of the Nation" on NPR doing a special on Tito Puente. I'm just a 29 year old white girl, and I had never heard this kind of music!!! And all I've got to say is, I don't know what that stuff was that I used to listen to, poetic ramblings and such, but THIS IS MUSIC. You can NOT sit still listening to it. You just have to get up and dance. I'm not a Tito Puente expert, and I don't know which album is supposed to be the best, but I happened to choose this one, and it's GOOD. I'm going to buy another Tito Puente album today! --Senta

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally outstanding!
This is one of the top jazz trumpets I have ever heard! Sandoval's technial ability and his range just topples me! He is much better than Maynard Feguson, I believe Sandoval has an octave above Ferguson. You can really hear his ability in the song A Night in Tunisia. Sandoval takes one lick and plays it i 3 DIFFERENT OCTAVES!!! His skill is beyond anything else i have ever heard. I hope to see him live soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a guy
Simply put, Arturo Sandoval is one of the most amazing musicians of our time. This CD puts together some of his best work, although several tracks lack the Cuban "essence" that go with most of his songs. It is truly outstanding none the less. During Sandovals' cadenza on "A Night in Tunisia", you can hear someone in the audience yell out "Damn!" after one of his famed high notes... well put. This is one CD that's absolutely worth buying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now this is great jazz and trumpet music
If you saw his movie (For Love Or Country-great movie) and you like jazz music with an awesome trumpet player than you will love this C.D. There is very little vocal, instead the trumpet is the lead singer. There are many other outstanding musicians and instruments that make this a great C.D. I bought the soundtrack from Love Or Country and was very dissapointed, but this C.D. more than made up for it. If you want more big band jazz/trumpet music than my second recommendation would be Cubanismo by Jesus Alemany

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Talent
This CD illustrates Arturo's extraordinary trumpet playing ability while providing even listeners who only moderatly like jazz great songs such as Maria and My Way. If you are a fan of jazz, his songs and especially the classic A Night in Tunisia will fulfill your desires. All songs showcase Sandoval's diversity and ability. If your a trumpet player, you will be impressed and astonished, but this CD will be enjoyable to all who appreciate and enjoy music.

2-0 out of 5 stars Derivative, unimaginative, uninspired
Arturo obviously is familiar and comfortable with the classics which he covers, but he doesn't do anything particularly interesting with them, and is usually downright boring. The modern effects are out-of-place and crude. Sure he can play his instrument, but he doesn't have the soul or mastery-without-effort of his superiors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellente!
Just got this today and it's exactly what I hoped for! The other reviewers were on the mark! The earlier Cugat orchestration and arrangements are so lovely and evocative. I'm a sucker for the sound of old recordings--these are from the 30's--they just had a warmth that is lost as recording equipment improved. But I still must get something with Besame Mucho . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU, KID
This compilation of Cugat recordings from 1935-1946 is one of the "sexiest" CD'S my collection. If you're a fan of many Hollywood films of that period these arrangements will send chills up your spine. Close your eyes and you're sitting at the Waldorf Bar in white tie with Bogie or George Raft; or you're an OSS agent sitting in a South American cabaret with Andrea King keeping one eye on Conrad Veidt and the other on Akim Tamiroff. The tunes are familiar and haunting. You may not remember the titles but you'll recognize the music of that genre.Several vocals by Bing Crosby and Dinah Shore add to your listening delight. The slow samba "BAIA" is an elixir with greater power than Viagra. The other rumbas, congas and tangos are superb; Cugat's distinctive rhythmic arrangements cast a hypnotic spell on the listener. Buy this album!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great music from an era gone by....
While on a Desi Arnez binge, I bought this CD not really knowing what to expect. I had read the book on Cugat by his ex-wife, and was curious as to his music. And what music it is. I've had this CD in my car's changer for two weeks now, and I'm listening to it more than the other five CD's combined. The music is superb, the perfect antidote to a long day at work. There's quite a variety of tunes, and the rhythm section has to be heard to be believed. And this is music that's a half century old! However, a warning to the guys: Listening to this CD may make you want to don tux-n-tails, order a Martini or Manhattan, and then let your feet fly across the dance floor with your Lady Love!

4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, Terrific and Nostaligic........More....

5-0 out of 5 stars A great first Tito Puente album
Get a great introduction to the early work of Tito Puente, El Rey, the King. Tito Puente, salsa extraordinaire and father of afro-jazz, was an incredible talent who will be long remembered. This CD is the perfect collection to get started with Puente's vast library.

Smooth latin grooves are guaranteed on every track. Scary tribal rhythms shine through on Dance of the Headhunters. As one of my friends said, if you don't bob your head to Ti Mon Bo, you probably don't have a pulse. Night Ritual, Hong Kong Mambo, and El Cayuco would rank as some of my favorites if I had to choose, but thankfully I don't.

Informative liner notes give a good history lesson about Tito's roots, how he begun, and how he lasted and played amazing music even into his older years. Puente will certainly be remembered for one of the longest lasting, highest quality musicians the world has ever seen.

A great stepping stone for other Puente albums, this will give a brief introduction to many of the styles Puente cultivated over the years. I suggest Mambo Birdland: Dancemania, a live album from the late 1990s, as a wonderful chance to hear Puente and his full orchestra in rare form, playing a live show in the Palladium, decades after his playing originally sparkled there.

A high quality album all around, a great beginning to more Puente albums. Highly recommended to any newcomers to salsa who have interest. As the liner notes proclaim, El Rey esta meurte: long live the King! ... Read more
