5-0 out of 5 stars Warm and bright
This is a wonderful cd, warm and bright as Brazil on a sunny day. M's Brackeen's piano playing is perfectly matched by her accompanists (Eddie Gomez, Duduka Da Foneseca and Waltinho Anastacio) and is the perfect anidote for dreary winter days. Put this on, brew yourself a good cup of coffee (or tea if you prefer) and enjoy this wonderful music. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Brazilian Jazz Piano Album !!!!!!
Joanne is excellent in this recording, her piano sounds incredible and she's found a great way to express what Brazilian Jazz is all about. Her piano performance falls right between Tania Maria's and Eliane Elias' styles; is just great. There's only one "but" though, there are some "extensive" bass guitar solos that depreciate your appreciation of the melodies. However, it's a great album you should not let pass by, purchase it now !!!!!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Love Astrud Gilberto, but mediocre reproduction.
I rated this a 4 because this cd needs remastering.

I have 5 of Astrud Gilberto's cd's. I love this singer's delivery, but the production quality of this cd is not the best. I own 4 other Astrud cds, all rated 5 on Amazon. If this is your first Astrud Gilberto experience, try one of the others, first.

I guess I'd buy it, again, in spite of its flaws.

4-0 out of 5 stars ...among the best of an earlier Latin Explosion
The new interest in Latin performers such as Ricky Martin is unlikely to raise interest in bossa nova music. To many, its rhythms and guitar interplay always recall the Swinging Sixties. But the sweet, clear voice of Astrud Gilberto, heard here collaborating with some of the day's best jazz arrangers and musicians (Gil Evans, Marty Paich and of course, Antonio Carlos Jobim) is always worth hearing.

Stan Getz received most of the credit (and royalties) for the first big bossa nova hit, "Girl From Ipanema" (heard here in a live version). But Ms. Gilberto became the trademark voice for the music's sensual sound, which influenced the other pop-bossa nova star of the time, Sergio Mendes. "Dindi," "Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars," and a lovely version of "The Shadow of Your Smile" (which everyone from Streisand to Sinatra recorded at the time) are highlights. A great introduction to both Ms. Gilberto and the bossa nova sound, but also check out the Frank Sinatra/Antonio Carlos Jobim masterpiece from 1967.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Astrud Gilberto Songs
the songs on this on this album range from festive (felicidad) to somber and fatalistic (Quiet night of Quiet Stars). Its a good collection that showcases Gilberto's unique brazilian voice. One major disapointment for me was the live recording of her major hit, Stan Getz's "Girl from Ipanema". There is a microphone glitch at the beginning of the song that really annoys me. Other than that, the rest of the stuff is pretty good ... Read more

This album changed my life .
Beatiful music !!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grows within you
I have full respect for those who think that the only enjoyable pleasures are the love-at-first-sight ones. But I don't agree. When I bought this CD some years ago, the shop's host warned me that this was a great one but also a tough one.

Since then, each time I listen to it I discover new sounds and I improve my ability to be impressed again and again. These pieces are always a mystery but at the same time are so primarily human that you can't avoid finding links on the intellectual and physical levels.

The brilliant percussion leads you to a catharsis. The litany of the fantastic berimbau is overwhelming. The voice is tranformed into an instrument through emerging whispers and wild screaming. You can find a mix of the most rustic, almost tribal sounds blended with an academic chords section.

One advice: Listen to this music alone on a peaceful atmosphere. Otherwise you are wasting time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Too marvelous for words
And yet, I'm not short of them... To begin with, is it "jazz"? Well, are Ellington and Gershwin "jazz"? Geez. Never mind; it's Jobim, and so it's *music* - beautiful music, and as such part of The Great Whole [expletive] Multiverse Songbook. Those who mistakenly identify Jobim with the muzak schmaltz "bossa nova" has been corrupted into in the US have no idea how gifted and versatile a songwriter and musician Jobim was, nor do they even begin to have a clue where his musical roots lie. Think Debussy and Ravel. Consider that among his masters and mentors were, among others, Villa Lobos and Radames Gnatalli. And that he began eking out a (rather meager) living, in the early Fities, as an *arranger*. There was always in Jobim's work a rich sense of composition, in the broadest sense, which shines through in this album, together with Matita Pere arguably the most accomplished Jobim / Claus Ogerman collaborations (and we're forever indebted to Creed Taylor for first bringing the two together). In the original LP (as in Matita Pere), side one comprised "regular" songs, while on side two Jobim gave free vent to his "symphonic" persona - and both enchanted and enthralled the listener to a point where flipping the record was a Hobson's choice of sorts. With the CD, you are spared the choice, and are allowed to experience how the last chords in Angela segue seamlessly into the opening bars of Saudade do Brazil (the English spelling of Brasil a deliberate irony). Still, try putting this CD on shuffle mode; no matter in what order the tracks play, it's one continuous flow of, again, music beautiful. And, give him his due: only Tom could write elogiacally (shame on the producers of the reissue for overimposing Jobim's headshot on the gorgeous photo of a jereba on full glide) about the Cathartidae...

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo!
Simply walk or if you prefer for speed, drive to the music store and buy this album in any format. Do not stop at Go, and get ready for the visual motion picture that dreaming can only afford you.

If you find yourself disappointed for whatever reason, your mind is still sleeping against new and explorational adventures in musicale outside the norm.

In Love and Light

5-0 out of 5 stars sublime
For those discovering Jobim and his bossa nova sound, Urubu will come as a surprise: it's neither bossa nor jazz, but a stunning confluence of both, resulting in a heavily-orchestrated type of 'easy listening' that is anything but. Jobim's recognised compositional idiosyncrasies and Claus Ogerman's lush arrangements keep pulling the music (and the listener) away from the deadness of muzak and into an extraordinary soundscape of traditional instruments and Brazilian-style orchestration. If you like the idea of music that slips down like soft ice cream on a hot day, yet doesn't leave any sickly aftertaste, then get this album!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars SARAVA O TOM, VIVA O SOM!!!!!!
What a fine recording from Mestre Tom!!
The opening track, "O Boto" is the FEATURE track of the lp(!!??). The best I can describe it to listeners- this track so meticulously crafted-lets use an analogy... in American musics, people said this same thing about GOOD VIBRATIONS by Beach Boys, remember? Listen to the track carefully, the chord voicings, the arrangement....the "Thelonius Monk style" electric piano chord comps ......AN UNBELIEVABLE TRACK- worth the price of the cd alone. Following immediately is CORRENTEZA, one of the most BEAUTIUL & underappreciated compositions in the JOBIM "book"! (Djavan recorded a version a few years ago, but it pales next to O Tom's plaintive reading....) Another reviewer already described the cd here ,so I will add-- this and "companion" recording "MATITA PERE" marked a "different" musical direction for Jobim, both were a homage to the great composer Heitor Villa_Lobos( the Brasilian Bartok, who fused classical music with Brasilian! "folk" styles).
I owned the lp when first issued, and it was formatted where side 2 was all the orchestral works.
The cd follows a similar path.
I feel "sad" for the reviewer who was "disappointed" in the cd as it wasn't "Brasilian Jazz"(sic).
In the words (I translate & parafrase in English)of Hermeto Pascoal and I feel Jobim might have said the same-- "I am proud to be Brasilian, but my music is UNIVERSAL"!
Hermeto s right on it with that frase!
I hope that reviewer will eventually open up to "Urubu" as it is a fantastic recording. NOT TO BE MISSED ,my friends!
BRIGADAO, MESTRE!

4-0 out of 5 stars .
After reading the customer reviews of this disc, I feel compelled to chime in. This is a fine album, but it's not jazz, doesn't purport to be jazz, and thus shouldn't be criticized for not being jazzy enough. It was conceived by Carlos Jobim as a tribute to one of the greatest Brazilian composers of all time, Heitor Villa-Lobos. The project is executed with great feeling and beauty. Anyone who would call this "schmaltz" is unable or unwilling to approach Carlos Jobim as a serious composer and instead treats his work as if it were not something of real value but only of novelty value to be played as background music for a dinner party, a seduction, or a quiet evening at home. I can recommend this album very highly to those who are interested in actually listening to some wonderful pieces of music in the Brazilian tradition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL SONGS -- WONDERFUL PERFORMANCES
I can basically only agree with the review below -- this is a well-recorded, lovingly performed tribute concert to Tom Jobim's long-time friend and collaborator Vincius de Moraes. Many of the classic songs are included in the program -- 'Insensatez', 'Felicidade', 'Samba de Carioca', 'Garota de Ipanema' (and the version here blows away ANY of the 'elevator music' interpretations you most likely have endured) -- and the participants are perfect, possibly the musicians most sympathetic to his music with whom the Master ever worked. The recording -- and live recordings are always a bit of a risk to the buyer -- is clear and quiet, the applause from the audience only audible between the tracks. This recording aptly captures Jobim's art -- and his love for it. It's a must-have for anyone who enjoys the best that Brazilian music has to offer -- his work is the pinnacle of the form.

The Morelenbaums -- Paula and Jacques, on vocals and cello, respecetively -- and Paolo Jobim, on guitar and vocals, are, of course, three-fourths of the incredible Quarteto Jobim-Morelenbaum, whose recording of a couple of years ago, dedicated to Tom Jobim's music, has become a modern classic in its own right. They are joined here by the fine work of Danilo Caymmi on flute and vocals. The support these wonderful musicians gently give to Tom's piano and vocals show their love and respect for this giant -- his contributions to modern music will, I feel certain, be eternally honored for their timeless beauty.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lovely and very pleasant live tribute by "Tom" Jobim
Recorded live in Brazil in 1990 and not released in the U.S. until now, "Tom Canta Vinicius" (translate "Tom Sings Vinicius") is Tom Jobim's tribute to his songwriting partner Vincinius de Moraes. While de Moraes was not nearly as famous as Mr. Jobim, his standing as a bossa nova original is secure, having helped pen several of the best-loved songs of that genre. Many of those were performed in this concert, including my favorite bossa tune, "Insensatez," one of the most beautiful songs of all time. Jobim was accompanied by his son Paulo, Danilo Caymmi and the Morelenbaums. In fact, Paula Morelenbaum sung most of the lead vocals - and did a magnificent job. Tom sang a few numbers alone or in duet with Paula, in his sometimes thin or fragile-sounding voice (but not really a problem, because you can feel his love for the songs). The sound quality for the recording is excellent - intimate and natural, like they're playing in your living room. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous album, pretty and mellow
Beautiful!Highly recommended.Although there is only one song by Pixinguinha on here ("1 X 0"), this can be seen as a warmup for Moura's lauded "Pixinguinha" album of 1998.This is "choro" music at its best -- and at its warmest. These duets are much less rigorously arrranged than on the '98 album; Moura's clarinet work is sensitive and nuanced, with a wide dynamic range. He slides from mournful to majestic, constantly urged on by Rabello's guitar work, which is dead-on perfect throughout. It's a very nice record, maybe a little hard to find these days, but well worth looking for.

The brilliant Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim's collaborations with singer Joao Gilberto, guitarist Charlie Byrd, and saxophonist Stan Getz spearheaded the bossa nova sound in the 1960s with such hits as "The One Note Samba" and "The Girl from Ipanema." But, as this rich, 1973 reissue amply illustrates, Jobim was capable of creating music that revealed the full encyclopedic scope of his eclectic genius. Jobim's achy vocals and spare guitar and piano work are backed by an all-star orchestra, conducted and arranged by Claus Ogerman, featuring bassists Ron Carter and Richard Davis and percussionist Airto Moreira. The plaintive "Aguas de Marco/Waters of March," "Maite Pere," and "Ana Luiza" ring with the haunting feel of saudade--the Afro-Portuguese equivalent of the blues. But, as his award-winning soundtrack of Black Orpheus proved, Jobim was also an exceptional film composer, and his evocative score for "Cronica de Casa Assassinada/Chronicle of the Murdered House" on this disc is filled with faraway train sounds and dreamy Ravel-Debussy impressionism. The angelic instrumentals "Um Rancho Nas Nuvens," "Tiemp do Mar," and "Nuvens Douradas" highlight the cool, continental confluence of Villa-Lobos, Gershwin, and Ellington that madeAntonio Carlos Jobim's music timeless. --Eugene Holley Jr. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly One of the "Most Memorable" Performances of this ..
...very Talented Musician, Haunting, & Memorable. I own the Original Record, and have very "Definite Memories" that are
entwined with the Music. A "Must Have" for any fan of his music!

5-0 out of 5 stars Aquarela do Brasil, Jobim deserves better..
..than to JUST have this recording released on cd in USA only this last year, the cd is a "classic".(avaliable in Brasil for years, titled "Matita Pere".
I will say just a few words, hopefully of interest about this cd, and "O mestre", Tom Jobim!
1) this cd- "Matita Pere" the name is in Brasil version as previously mentioned(and Urubu also) were funded ENTIRELY by "a certain Mr Jobim" as to insure "complete artistic integrity" and freedom to make musics as Tom was evolving constantly as a composer, and the recording companies wanted an endless stream of Bossa classics from him. This was the music that Tom Jobim heard in his heart at that time, and he gave it freely , without any constraint from the record label.
2) regarding his famous composition "Aguas......" (em Ingles, Waters of March)-- for the English version, O Mestre sat down with dictionary at hand, and decided to write the English version using ONLY words of NON LATIN origin, AN AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL idea! What a contrast, a beautiful song from a "tropical" composer sung in Northern "Saxon-Teutonic dialetto"! (Though NOTHING touches the original Portugues lyrics, nothing can come close!

Can you imagine any of the "great" American songwriters doing this? NO NO, a thousand times NO!(except for Terry Callier, and Shawn Phillips-they are the preeminent USA-born wordsmiths!)
Sarava, TOM JOBIM!
Words are important not only for the lyrical content, but for the way a lyric can take a shape all its own within a song.

3)Tom and "O Alemao" Claus Ogerman have a "telepathy" , they were Kissing cousins musically as the way O Tom was a "brother" with Vinicius de Moraes.
Ogerman's production/arrangements were as intertwined with the Jobim "spirit" as Vinicius was with regards to composing/lyrics.

4)The Matita Pere is the name of a wonderful bird in Brasil! Who cares, right.......hehehehehe

Jobim had an immense love and respect for nature, he grew up in a time when the beautiful ladscapes of unspoiled Rio de Janeiro were his to explore, and this is his musical "gift" to the world of his discoveries.
You FEEL it in the compositions themselves.
5) this cd has a pretty cover, buy it , and/or Matita Pere which has the lovely watercolor picture on the inside sleeve of the cd ..NOW!, hehehehehehehehehehe ENJOY!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great work, lousy remaster
This is a brilliant album, but the sound is unfortunately inferior to that of the Brazilian CD version, which bears the original cover and title ("Tom Jobim-Matita Perê"). This version, in comparison, is hiss-filled and not as rich-sounding. That's why it loses a star. Audiophiles are advised to seek out the Brazilian-issued CD instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars A satisfying mix of Jobim standards & film music...
It was not long after this LP was released that Coca-Cola used "Aguas de Marco" (Waters of March) for one of its own tv commercials. We are treated to two language versions of that song in this album, along with many other Jobim compositions, all skillfully arranged by Claus Ogerman. I especially enjoyed the film music that is included here. Jobim was a man of many different composing talents, and this album--out of all he recorded--showcases and illustrates this in a perfect way. Definitely a must-have CD for any Jobim fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Jobim's best...
I came across this album in a record store in Frankfurt, Germany back in 1973 or 1974, and bought it primarily because I loved "Mantiqueira Range" so much. After listening to the rest of it a few times I really loved the whole thing. I've been looking for this to come out on CD for years, and I'm glad they finally did it. The music is haunting, wistful, happy...all kinds of things. It's also incurably romantic; great music for having the lights down low... ... Read more

I heard my first Azymuth in 1981 and was hooked. 4-0 out of 5 stars The real roots of Tom Jobim...
To really get a feel for how revolutionary Jobim's compositions were, we should look at what a tough time his contemporaries had when they tried to take on the new style Jobim pioneered. This phenomenal 3-CD set collects dozens of rarities from the mid-1950s and early '60s (along with a handful of later recordings) and lays bare the stylistic limitations of the Brazilian pop establishment at the time when bossa nova became king. This collection includes many songs written well before the "official" start of the bossa nova, with performances by artists as diverse as Vicente Celestino, Albertinho Fortuna, Isaura Garcia, Sylvia Telles, Dick Farney, Claudete Soares, and others - some who have faded from history's glance, and others who are still well-known.By now, these melodies are etched in our minds, mainly through the effortless style of performers such as Joao and Astrud Gilberto, and the suave bossa performers that came in their wake. It's instructive, then, to hear the relatively awkward fashion with which the pre-bossa crowd tackled this material, and the surprising stiffness of their performances.Hammy baritones, barbershop-ish vocal groups, chirpy, operatic European-styled female singers populated the landscape, and while they were drawn to the new music, they could not summon the graceful elan that the bossa crowd possessed.Jobim, along with contemporaries such as Carlos Lyra and Vinicius de Moraes, liberated Brazil from the bland anglophilia that had taken root in the postwar era, eradicating the attraction of tepid, safe Edmundo Ros-style pop with one gentle, samba-tinged sweep of bossa's magic wand.Anyone seeking to understand the history of Brazilian pop in general and bossa nova in particular should seek this collection out.The Revivendo label also has an amazing assortment of historical, pre-bossa samba recordings, well worth checking out. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars But five stars for the Puppy Song
Yikes! What a poor CD. Mostly disco, and bad disco at that. As others have pointed out, if you want the famous bossanova version of "Girl from Ipanema" with Astrud's singing and the Stan Getz sax solo, try Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour CD. Amazon has it, but don't get confused, apparently in the samples Amazon sampled the 30 seconds of the song with Astrud's husband singing. But trust me, that is the version you're probably looking for. The version of "Girl From Ipanema" on this CD is complete schlock and I have no idea why anyone would want to listen to it. As far as disco goes, I guess this CD is OK if all you want is a steady beat, but it's not very moving.

Now that I got the bad part of this review over with, now for the good part. "The Puppy Song" is Astrud Gilberto at her best, and is a very nice arrangement, not mindlessly fabricated disco. Astrud Gilberto's voice adds an innocentquality to the song that Harry Nilsson's original doesn't convey. I believe this is the only CD with Astrud Gilberto's version of "The Puppy Song". I think this one song is worth the price of the CD, particularly if you can find it at a used, discounted price. Fortunately for those wanting this CD for this fine gem of a song there should be a lot of used CD's available because of disappointed buyers who really wanted the famous version of the title track.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just so you know....
This is not the original Stan Getz version of "Girl from Ipanema" that you are looking for. For that, and for many other fine Astrud Gilberto performances, you must track down a copy of "Astrud Gilberto's Finest Hour" which is a greatest hits collection of her sixties work, with good liner notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Not belive the critic's
I purchased this cd by mistake(since there is(4)Astrud Giberto cd's by the same name! And i had a 2nd on orderand this packed to go back! on the review's of others although i have not recieved my 2nd cdI am so happy i listened to this Yes this copy has a faster pace to itBUT it is Great! it has fast dance mixes along with slow ones, Just right for a party album and Ms.Gilberto's voice is just wonderful on allcut'sWho say's a artist cannot change styles once in a whileI'm sure she was satisfied with the outcome or we would not have it to tear apartand at the price you cannot go wrong I hope my rateing ups the rateings on this cd it deserves it!

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible
I'd heard The Girl from Ipanema (another recording) and decided to purchase it.Should have done my research. This high pitched, strained version hurts the ears.I couldn't get it to the cd store for trade in fast enough.

2-0 out of 5 stars disco girl form ipanema
I'm the greatest fan of Astrud and was really looking forward to getting this CD, but I was really surprised, when I listened to it. Jazzy bossa nova style that I love with Astrud very much is something that this CD isn't about. Disco remixes, I'd say. Only positive thing is her voice, which can not be unchanged. If you are looking for an essential Astrud Gilberto CD, than don't buy this one, but Sliver collection, jazz samba, Verve Collection or many others, that are the best. But if you are collector, than maybe this CD would find a place on your shelf for collectory reasons. Anyway, Astrud is the greatest! ... Read more
