2-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
I bought this box set because of all the major Brazilian stars featured in the set. I have a pretty extensive Brazilian collection, and I hoped this would fill in for some stars that I do not have in my collection. But it was not what I hoped for, the stars are there but they are not singing any of their good stuff, and many of the tracks feature multiple singers, like if they were singing for a fund raiser. The few good tunes that are in this collection don't justify the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best introduction....

4-0 out of 5 stars The Heart speaks and says.......wow!
I was a bit late on the Terence Blanchard bangwagon, but now that I'm here...I'll be staying on! This album is VERY nice and it wasn't until I actually paid attention to my, 'Mo' Better Blues' soundtrack notes that I saw that he had his hand in that work. This CD combines that smooth Terence way with the sensual unpinnings of music from Brazil. My favorite, "Antes Que Seja Tarde" meaning "Before it's too late" speaks to the people of Brazil and what they need to do to make a brighter furture there, simply sweet! This is one of the few CD's that I have that no particular programming is needed. I put this one in and press play! Terence has paid homage to a musical style and group of people that truly touches ones heart! The heart TRULY does speak and says......go get this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars good joint effort: Brazilian and jazz music
I was shocked to read the review by "someone" from Toronto. I am pretty sure he does not understand either jazz or Brazilian music. Blanchard does a good enough job with the music of Ivan Lins, and I can hear this CD over and over. Please do not pay attention to the review I am refering to, BUT TO THE MUSIC in the CD, you will enjoy it very much.

Other efforts by Blanchard are very good, but I prefer him working is small groups (quartets, quintets). He is an excellent performer, composer, and arranger, however, under the shadow of fellow trumpeter from New Orleans,Wynton Marsalis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why? This is good.
Lush, sensual and at the same this make you feel calm and contemplative.Blanchard is brilliant!Listen to his tone and articulation.Delicate and smooth. And especially in slow tracks his merit is throughly exemplified. He chose not to waste too many notes, sticking to his beautiful long tones more than usual. And this album contains many slow tracks. You will be immersed in his tonal magic in this ideal setting.

Oscar Castro-Neves plays the guitar in some tracks.Paulinho Da Costa is in the band, too.

1-0 out of 5 stars right material, wrong artist
I am a fan of Brazilian music of all kinds, and a sometimes jazz fan. I have read about Terence Blanchard's work but, until this CD, had not heard him. Ivan Lins gives Blanchard marvelous songs to play but Blanchard does virtually nothing of interest with them. In fact, the playing is mind-numbingly, teeth-achingly dull. Too often on the slower material, Blanchard holds notes for what seems like forever because he has no other place he wants to go. Technically proficient, but boring, the CD feels like it lasts for hours. Lins tries adding vocal accompaniment to most tunes, but that usually doesn't work, because again Blanchard shows no understanding of the material that he is working with. Any of Lins own albums is better than this by a wide, wide margin. As for Blanchard, I don't know him well enough to hazard a guess, but I sure don't plan to give him another listen for a long, long time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best CE of Jobim's I have run into!
Many of the songs on this CD are Jobim standards, but what makes this one special is the arrangements done by Claus Ogerman. Anyone who is a Jobim fan will be brought to tears by "Dindi" and "Triste" when they listen to these selections on this CD. I was also impressed by the work he did with his daughter on "Voce Vai Ver". For the price, you will never find a better value. A definite keeper. I have just about every American album of his and I can say without a doubt that this is the best single effort I have seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great album & pairing with Claus Ogerman
Anyone who is a fan of "A Certain Mr. Jobim", "Wave", "Urubu" or any of the other joint efforts by Tom Jobim and Claus Ogerman (arranger), will want to add this album to their collection of Jobim recordings. Beautiful orchestral arrangements--the kind for which Ogerman never disappoints. There are some very moving tracks here--enough that it is difficult for me to single out a favorite track--and I don't know how anyone could not enjoy listening to every minute of this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
There is no risk in buying this album. Perfection, and Ogerman is extraordinaire!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jobim's Best
The first time I heard this CD was late at night several years ago. The entire 75 minutes this album played on my CD player I sat down listening in awe delighted that a human being could create such beautiful sound with charming and poetic lyrics to match. The orchestration is near perfection. I have not since heard music as beautiful and haunting as what's been crafted here. By far his best effort!

5-0 out of 5 stars kite on the sky
After listening to this record I understood suddenly why is the music all about, why some chords arranged in the way Claus Ogerman did awoke forgotten memmories and feelings like : first trip out of home, first date, first kiss, tears, first jeans, first italian espresso on via venetto in Rome watching all these beautiful girls and streets and marble spanish steps, it was a trully lifetime experience. This record is one of the gemstones of all kinds of music , this is the record that should be protected and kept in MOMa or Washington or better in Taj Mahal because this monument of love is similar to this record. I have all jobim records, but this one.... Two kites on the sky and you'll feel like a high school boy, double rainbow and literally you,ll find the treasure but not on one side but on both sides. Dont miss the liquid dreams and love from this record. If youre sorry call me, but I hardly believe so. NINO ... Read more

Flora Purim's album from 2001, Perpetual Emotion, was her best since her '70s heyday. But who knew she was just warming up? If that record is reminiscent of her early '70s jazz output on Fantasy Records, this one has echoes of her more expansive Warner Bros. releases of later in that decade, specifically the '77 classic, Nothing Will Be as It Was. That disc featured three songs by the great Brazilian singer-songwriter Nascimento, the title track of which is reprised here with its Portuguese title, "Nada Sara Como Antes," although it is the only one of the 10 songs sung in English. Purim expands her musical vocabulary with two tracks obviously tilted towards the dance and electronica crowd. She hit the mark so well on the sultry "Nuvem Cigana" that there are probably remixes already floating on the streets of Rio and Paris. Nascimento fans will appreciate her original interpretation of songs he's known for, such as "Encontros e Despedidas" and "Cravo e Canela." Instrumentally, Widor Santiago's saxophone soars on two lush ballads, and Purim's old '70s partner, George Duke, takes a stirring nostalgic Moog synthesizer solo on "Nos Dois." --Mark Ruffin ... 5-0 out of 5 stars She's still great after these years!
This CD has really grown on me; at first I found it a bit too pop-flavored, with several sax-laden tunes--almost like something you'd hear on a "light jazz" station (yuck). But good songs in any form (as well as artists) tend to rise to the occasion and this is no exception. My favorite songs are "Nuvem Cigana," "Nada Sera Como Antes, Amanha," (Nothing Will be as it Was...Reprised), "Nos Dois," and the happily energetic "Cravo E Canela."

As you might guess, all the songs are sung in Portuguese. I don't understand the language but I do love the sound of Flora's voice and the fine tunes carry them the rest of the way.

Long-time fans of Flora Purim are familiar with "Nothing Will Be as it was, Tomorrow"--the title of one of her best 70's recordings. A rearranged version is on this set. The new one took a bit getting used to but now I like it a lot. It's a bit mellower than the original; the muted horns on the chorus add a particular warmth and swing to this song.

Airto Moreira contributes a nice vocal on "Gira Girou." Their daughter, Diana Moreira Booker, also provides backing vocals throughout.

My favorite song is "Nos Dois" which begins with an achingly beautiful solo piano followed by Flora's melancholy voice singing about "The Two of Us."

If you're familiar with Flora Purim, you'll probably enjoy this new recording the same as the old. And if you don't know her, this is a good introduction to Brazilian flavored jazz and one of her greatest singers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensuous Jazz ....
I was set to buy another jazz album then I heard this playing and bought it instead. This album has it all - good playing, excellent recording quality, and the enticing seductiveness of Purim's voice. Put this on and have a glass of wine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Recording
I have been listening to Flora Purim and Milton Nascimento since the mid 70's and this recording follows a long string of excellent recordings by this songbird. Sung in her native Portuguese, this recording captures a small sampling of Milton Nascimento's song book. The music is vibrant and dynamic while Flora's voice rises and falls to the rhythms of Brazil. Flora's voice has gotten better with time - like a fine wine. I still get goose bumps from some of the vocal sounds this woman makes. They don't make singers like this anymore, so I count Flora as a treasure. This is a great first sampling for new Purim fans and a treasure for her seasoned followers. Her Milestone recordings are classics and I only wish that Warner Brothers would get off the dime and release her WB recordings. A WB box set would be nice. Then my collection would be complete. Keep up the vibe Flora - In an oversold world of bubblegum vocalist - you are one of the few keepers of the flame. Peace. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Smooth samba background music
This album is heavily orchestrated and borders on the musaac-y side of samba. However, a few redeeming tracks like "Girl from Ipanema", and "Agua de Beber," with Astrid Gilberto, and "Surfboard" make it seem like it fulfills that "lounge" part of your music collection. It also works as a nice subtle CD to play during a late night dinner party or better, a seduction. Mind you, play it low so the musaac undertones don't distract from the atmosphere it helps to create. However, if you're a samba purist, stick to Jobim's earlier work, before Brazilian Samba was "discovered" by American producers. ... Read more

In Montreal, a concert recording from 1989, offers a live echo of the exquisitely balanced trio of Haden, Gismonti, and Garbarek who made the Magico and Folk Songs albums a couple of decades ago. It features two pieces from the repertoire of the trio--Gismonti's gently waltzing "Palhaco" (which comes dressed in quite a bit of the blues), and Haden's gravely beautiful "Silence." Both participants are in tremendous form. Gismonti, in particular, is nothing short of sensational. Whether on 10-string guitar or piano, instruments that he shifts between regularly, his lines are shot through with both a propulsive, cascading energy and a limpid, dynamically rich and wide-ranging lyricism: sample the opening "Salvador" and "Maracatu" for representative examples. Haden flows in and out of focus with typical sensitivity, contributing a variety of solos as distilled as they are questing. The whole constitutes one of the most enjoyable duet recordings heard for a long time, and leads to two thoughts: why on earth did this music take so long to see the light of day and will we ever hear a record featuring the entire Magico trio in a live setting? In the meantime, we can relish this rich and rare treasure from the past. --Michael Tucker ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL MUSIC...
...that is actually not so simple. The fact that there are only two musicians playing here, and that this is a live recording, with no overdubs, belies the complexity of the compositions. There's a lot going on here - Haden's reputation has been well-established, as has that of Gismonti, and they each live up to every bit of it in this performance. Gismonti's guitar work alone makes this disc worth the price - joined with Haden's stellar bass playing, the level of compositional achievement by both (Gismonti wrote or co-wrote seven of the nine tracks - Haden wrote the other two), the quality (crystalline, as always, from ECM) AND quantity (79 minutes) of the recording, it adds up to a disc that's hard to pass up.

I agree slightly with one or two of the reviewers below - those who prefer Gismonti's guitar pieces to those that feature the piano - but I would hardly dismiss the latter as 'Keith Jarrett knockoff'. Simply because there are similarities to be heard - or even influences - doesn't mean that Egberto's work should be slighted as 'derivative'. The echoes of his Brazilian roots can be heard throughout most of his work - he has taken that foundation and built upon it a strong, individual portfolio of his own creativity. It shines with the unique qualities of his soul, as the work of any true artist does. His guitar playing - on a specially designed 10-stringed instrument - never fails to make my jaw drop. I would swear at times that there is more than one guitarist playing - but I know from listening to Egberto's other recordings that this is not the case.

Even though Charlie Haden contributes only two compositions to this set, those two pieces are striking in their beauty and depth - his sense of melodic structure is breathtaking. His work - both writing and playing - places him in the highest ranks of performers and composers in jazz or any other genre. He has distinguished himself throughout his career as a sideman, composer and leader.

This is a wonderful opportunity to hear two masters at work - or, considering the joy that is so obvious in this recording, 'at play' - in a setting that is wonderfully uncluttered and honest.

3-0 out of 5 stars Derivative?
Listen to Keith Jarrett's "Sundial/Sand" album and you'll find that Gismonti's style owes a great deal -- perhaps a bit too much, actually -- to Mr. Jarrett's earlier grooves.

I loves the bass/guitar pieces on this album: They're fantastic. But when Gismonte hits the boards, I feel like I'm hearing a cross between a Jarrett knockoff and a late-80s Windam Hill album.

Definitely a mixed bag.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's understandable why Charlie Haden gets top billing . . .
. . . but I agree with others that this is really Egberto Gismonti's record. And what a record it is!

It's not that Gismonti's been underrecorded, but his last four or five records for ECM (Infancia, Meeting Poing, Zig Zag, etc.) strike me as being more than a little eccentric, and not in a good direction. Whatever happened to the magical music found on Magico, Folk Songs, Sanfona, Danca Das Cabecas, Sol Do Meio Dia, and Duas Vozes? Well, it's back, and in spades on this remarkable disc.

One of the reasons I love this record so much is because almost half the songs ("Maracatu," "Em Familia," "Loro," and "Frevo") come from Sanfona, Gismonti's most accomplished recording, and one of the all-time greatest records in the history of jazz. They're given fresh readings here, and a couple of them approach or even surpass the originals ("Maracatu" and "Em Familia").

By the way, the sound on this disc is some of the purist I've ever heard of a live recording. Not to be missed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Manfred!!!
Being a long time Egberto Gismonti fan,"Sanfona" remaining as my to date favorite, it is such a pleasure to hear these performances with Mr. Haden. Impeccable, inspired performances that are a joy to hear. Thank you again Manfred Eicher for bringing all of ECM's beautiful music to the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars powerful stuff
This duo of Charlie Haden (bass) & Egberto Gismonti (piano/guitar) is great. It is a calm blend of an upright bass and piano and guitar. Charlie Haden is a simple player but very musical. Egberto Gismonti is a very talented player who has many angles to his playing ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Toots Retrospective!!!!
Toots Thielemans has for over 50 years been redifining the way the world sees the harmonica. From his beginnings working with Benny Goodman, through his work with George Shearing, Quincy Jones, on soundtracks and his own recordings and recordings with other Jazz greats, Toots has shown the world that the harmonica isn't simply the humble musical instrument used by hobos and shoeshine boys.

This collection gives an excellent overview of Toots' amazing career. The earliest recording, from 1953, features Toots with George Shearing and from there it takes us through his many musical faces, from his many recordings with Quincy Jones, through various small groups and orchestras that he has recorded with included his many forays into Latin American Jazz.

the overal result is a complex, yet satisfying collection that will surely delight any Toots Thielemans fan as well as give a wonderful introduction to the uninitiated. If you thought that the harmonica was simply a novelty in the world of Jazz, then this album will certainly give you a great taste of what the harmonica is capable of.

I definitely recommend that you add this masterpiece to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Jazz Giant

5-0 out of 5 stars "smooth Latin jazz is a tall order"
This fifth collection of - "The Colors Of Latin Jazz - SABROSO!", features eleven tracks of - "Tasty" indeed! A collection of contemporary, smooth jazz, peppered with Latin rhythms and percussion. A musical hybrid that's at once cool & smooth, yet hot & spicy! Sabroso!" A quotation from the liner notes covers for the most part what this album is about, but don't stop there, you're about to take a journey into every color of Latin jazz.

The entire CD is awesome from start to finish, with stand outs and highlights. "ALL THIS LOVE" (El DeBarge) with Pete Escovedo featuring Gerald Albright & George Duke, big hit when first released by the composer, but this goes beyond the original - "SAN SEBASTIAN" (Ed Calle) performance by composer with special guest Arturo Sandoval, with a haunting arrangement that lingers for days - "MISTER E" (Dan Shea) another track featuring Pete Escovedo, smooth jazz is a tall order, and Pete fills it - "SMOOTH OPERATOR" (Audo/St. John) with Mongo Santamaria has the rhythm and tempo you can't get enough of.

Our friends at Concord Records and Nick Phillips keep the standards high with wonderful material from previously released albums. All compilations are superbly suited for this CD, with some of the best artists of today being featured - THE COLORS OF LATIN JAZZ - SABROSO!

Outstanding!Turn up the volume for the best sound you can get, and enjoy the complexity of this landmark album.

This album rocks with intricacy and drive. It's a MUST for anyone drawn to any polyrhythmic music, not just you brasileiro fans.

I've been playing this CD since it was first issued in the US and nver tire of it.It's on my special shelf of perennial favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Who is Who" of great Brasilians musicians, ....
...and not recorded by a Brasilian label, but the USA "classic" Jazz label Milestone.(Not so surprising , Milestone always a friend and entusiastic supporter of Música Brasileira Contemporanea).

What is amazed, that this recording, from 1991 is being Amazonreviewed in 2005 for the first time!

Bertinho is one of the legends of Brasilian drum tradition , and has assembled a lista too long to cite here, of the best of Brasilian musicans from the many facets of the diamond that is Brasilian sound. Some names quite familiar, some that do not receive the same amount of press clips.

I suppose , if one buys this recording, you will see exactly how many wonderful musicians are on this session. Eu vou te contar, uma luminosa constelacão de convidados espèciais , e Robertinho monstra os dentes na batería!

Only to single out, brevemente, Piano legendary Luiz Eça leads a quartet in one of his classic compositions, "The Dolfin", Hermeto Pascoal is featured (with a burning solo on the escaleta, also known as melodica) on his avant-guarde classic "O Gaio da Roseira".

Egberto Gismonti features in trio (with Nivaldo on soprano) his delightful and tonicfor the heart, "Bodas de Prata" and since the entire recording is dedicated to the great mestre and familiar friend of musica brasileira Wayne Shorter, he guest appears in a rousing version of his jazz standard "Speak No Evil", of course!

Milton Nascimento pays back to Robertinho for his fine support of Milton's musics in the past years by delivering the haunting "Lilia" (with Walter Smetek/Harry Partch disciples Grupo Uakti ).
Paulo Moura is represnted as the master of chorinho-jazz he is with "Domingo no Orfeão", and Azimuth co-leader Roberto Bertrami features in "Partido Alto #2 on both "the wood" and DX-piano.

After the too brief opening with Milton's "O Veio", João Donato offers an inspiration, Ary Barroso's Brasilian anthem "Aquarela Do Brasil". Hermeto veterano Mauro Sinise is on flauta here!!

"Um mil" entre os mais importantes músicos brasileirose o mais completo compendio da tradicão musical! Puxa vida (!),e dificil pinçar o melhor momento!

Do not pass this one up, too many stars in the sky, infinite as we are told. This cd is worth a galaxy for its own merit!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brazil Courtesy of Eliane
Eliane delivers a flavorful cornucopia of Brazilian influenced gems. She is by far one of the most rhythmically complex pianists this reviewer has ever encountered in this or any other genre (aside from Art Tatum ). Her playing is soulful, feminine and very Brazilian which is the very thing that makes this work so very sexy. Of particular note are 'Back in Time" which is a gumbo of driving Piano rhythms and chanting that really stirs the spirit and "Vida Continua (life goes on") which is an inspirational piece that is as tender as it is atmospheric. In a word this album is....Magnificent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Intricate arrangements and killer playing by Erskine & Berg

Since his U.S. debut in 1967, Barbosa-Lima has enjoyed a global concert career marked by numerous distinguished recordings on the Concord labels, now mostly out-of-print. 4-0 out of 5 stars if you like music...
get this cd. badi's guitar playing is excellent and this cd is moving and relaxing, energizing and inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars extraordinary - classic beauty with a twist
Badi Assad has converted me to her style of Brazilian music. Anyone who loves classical accoustic guitar music will love this cd. "Farewell" is the most haunting, perfectly played cut I have heard in years - It is worth the price of the CD for this cut alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like the pleasure of a perfectly-prepared, exotic meal
I know of very little music that I can listen to in a variety of contexts and still get pleasure out of it like the music of Badi Assad. Sit alone or with someone, turn the lights off, relax and be taken away by complexities of tone and rhythm that are nevertheless so easy to swallow. Or turn it on while you're thinking hard about some program or essay you're writing, letting it wash around you as you concentrate. And by all means, have it playing when you serve that exotic meal to your loved one, candles lit, the aroma of gently fried garlic in the air. Delicious! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Flora & George Duke weave Brazilian magic together
In 1979, George Duke took a break from his funky R&B successes to produce this Brazilian-jazz fusion record for Flora Purim. The result is one of Flora's best albums. Milton Nascimento's "From the Lonely Afternoon" is a highlight, given a more intense, upbeat interpretation here than the version he recorded with Wayne Shorter on "Native Dancer". Duke's original contribution, "Carry On", displays his polished R&B techniques, seasoned with a heavy dash of Brazilian spice. Max Middleton's "Freeway Jam", a Jeff Beck Group hit, is another highlight, with Flora's voice replacing Beck's guitar as the primary melody instrument. ... Read more
