To gauge the magnitude of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's popularity in his native Hawaii, consider this: following his death in 1997 (at age 38, attributed to his profound obesity), Kamakawiwo'ole's body lay in state in the state capitol, only the second person to receive such an honor. Kamakawiwo'ole's appeal lies in his love for prestatehood, precondominium Hawaii and the expressiveness of his gently passionate voice, which can float through higher registers with an ease that brings Johnny Mathis to mind. Several selections ("Ka Pua U'i," "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i," the sun-kissed "La 'Elima") feature Kamakawiwo'ole in a traditional mood, using only his ukulele to adorn the charm of his native lyricism. Others, such as the Jimmy Buffett-like "Maui Hawaiian Sup'pa Man" add playful contemporary touches that suit Kamakawiwo'ole's style. Most touching are the string-backed laments that open and close the album, "Hawai'i '78 Introduction" and "Hawai'i '78," initially a reflection on his father's death, later on the passing of Hawaii's native culture. Best known is his medley "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World," which played over the closing credits of the film Meet Joe Black. --Terry Wood ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Hawai'i '78
"Cry for the Gods, cry for the people, cry for the land that was taken away...and then yet you'll find, Hawai'i."

A few years ago when I was a serviceman stationed in Hawaii, I first heard this beautiful, haunting song, and was first exposed to the incredible voice of Israel "IZ" Kamawiwo'ole. Already sobered by the song's theme...the regret of native Hawaiians over losing their sovereignty...I was further saddened to learn that "IZ" had died in 1997. Like his father, and his brother, Skippy (also a recording artist), IZ had died of medical problems associated with obesity (he weighed as much as 760 pounds at one time). But thankfully, IZ left a legacy of recorded music, both as a solo artist and as a member of the Hawiiana band "Makaha Sons of Niihau". And thanks to the airplay received by "Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" on the TV show ER, the movie soundtracks "Finding Forrester" and "Meet Joe Black", and commercials for E-Toys, thousands of mainstream listeners on the mainland have now discovered IZ for the first time.

In many years of listening and collecting, I've never found an album like "Facing Future" that has such a universal appeal. Kids love it, teens love it, grandparents love it. A certified hard rocker myself (check my reviews of bands like Tool and Type O Negative), I consider "Facing Future" one of the top five CDs in my extensive collection, and rarely do I go more than a couple of weeks without giving it a spin.

Every track on the CD is wonderful, and if you skip over any, it will be just to get to the album's best two tracks, which are near the end: "Rainbow/Wonderful World" and "Hawai'i '78". In between, you'll find beautiful island music, sung both in the native Hawaiian language (check websites for translations) and English. A fun highlight is a cover of John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads" with O'ahu geography (West Makaha, Mount Ka'ala) replacing West Virginia and mountain mama. "Maui Hawaiian Suppa Man" is a favorite of my 9-year-old son (as is Hawai'i '78, which he has dubbed "Cry For The Gods"). And having lived in Hawaii for 3 glorious years, hearing IZ sing "White Sandy Beach" almost always brings mist to my eyes and a lump to my throat.

You will never buy a more beloved CD than this one, your family and friends will rave about it. Get it, you'll be glad you did!

5-0 out of 5 stars an amazing discovery! wish I could have found him earlier!
I work in a large chain record store near a movie theatre. Everynight we would have 2-3 people coming in looking for the "Finding Forrester" soundtrack. I finally asked someone what was so special about it. I was told they wanted it for the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" that plays during the closing credits. I didn't know anything about IZ before then. The next day I saw an article about him and heard the song for the first time... I was blown away. I bought "Facing Future" and "IZ in concert" the next day! Since then I have bought every CD that's available. I can't stop listening to him. I'm listening to "N Dis Life" as I type. I'm constantly telling people about "Brotha IZ". His music is so pure and simple, yet so complex and amazing. I still can't believe that such gentle music can come from such a large man. In a time where corporate music is shoved down our throats by radio and TV, IZ is not just a breathe of fresh air, he's the only thing worth breathing. IZ the man may be gone, but his music has made him immortal. May he live on and bring some culture and peace to mainstream music.

One of Hawaii's most beloved singers, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole made an impression on Hawaiian culture that will never be forgotten. His untimely death in 1997 was a national day of mourning, and rightly so. His work, not just in Hawaiian music, but also in keeping the Hawaiian heritage and culture alive, gives inspiration to all, and this collection of songs gives a great window into a truly legendary performer.

The artist behindFacing Future, the top-selling Hawaiian album of all time, the lateIsrael "IZ"Kamakawiwo'ole was possessed of a voice so sweet, so tender, and so lovelythat it continues to deeply stir those who hear it long after he died. Lovinglyassembled and notated by producer Jon de Mello, Alone in IZ World iscomprised of both alternate versions of Kamakawio'ole's best-loved songs as wellas tracks never before heard by the public. The latter category includesversions of "Hanohano No Na Cowboy," the playfully incomplete opening on "MonaLisa," and "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," on which IZ takes a rare turn atharmonizing with himself. In light of his premature passing, devastatinglybeautiful alternate cuts of "Starting All Over Again" and "In This Life" areespecially poignant. And "Over the Rainbow"--IZ's renditions were heard inMeet Joe Black andFinding Forrester--may neveragain sound so pure. --Paige La Grone ... Read more

i first came to hear of iz on a commercial for a childrens hospital here in my area of northeast ohio.my step-daughter had spent a considerable amount of time there and while showing scenes of various children all races, all types of defects, overcoming and smiling;there was this outstanding version of "somewhere over the rainbow" i cried while listening to this 60 second commercial!!!i called the hospital to see just who this was singing and they said iz blah blah blah.anyways,i found this cd,"alone in iz world" and heard the rest of the medley(what a wonderful world) along the with the other songs and still was crying!!! so sorry to hear of his passing and had it not been for my wife and my step-daughters' illnesses,i'd have found iz sooner.i find this cd so soothing as i deal with the stresses of caring for my wife and daughter. thank you IZ!!! and may you rest in the same peace that you have given me. A MUST HAVE FOR ANYONE WITH A HEART!!!!!
(looking forward to getting all of iz's catalog of music and video!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Alone in IZ world
My Mama is of Hawaiian descent and met my Dad while he was stationed in Hawaii during WWII. Growing up in the NorthEast did not allow me the exposure to Hawaiian music that I would have liked. We listened to my Mama's Hawaiian music on 78's, but we never understood the language. The melodies were often pretty, but we were clueless as to what was being said. (Remember--our language was taken away and the elders discouraged using the Hawaiian language.)

I was growing tired of Hawaiian music always being stereotyped and associated with Don Ho. So, I hit the music stores and stumbled across "IZ" by accident. I listened to the whole CD (Face the Future) in the store and bought it immediately.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (say that 3 times fast!) is an angel with a beautiful voice who should be honored and remembered by the Hawaiian natives.

On his new CD, "Alone in IZ world", the song "Starting all over again" couldn't be more appropriate in light of the bombings at the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Listen to it, absorb it, buy it. It's worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comfort and Escape.
The gentle sound from this gentle giant is a perfect anecdote to a hectic day. Rarely do you feel an authentic spirtuality from an artist, but IZ delivers this.

I first heard his Under the Rainbow/Wonderful World medley at a friend's wedding and couldn't shake his rendition. That cut alone is worth the entire CD.

If you've ever had the pleasure of visiting Hawaii, Iz will take you back there each time you play this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars IZ a wonderful world
After spending time in Hawai'i, I feel in love with IZ's music only to learn of his passing. What a wonderful singer, musician and songwriter he was. And a great loss to the music industry. I can only hope that he becomes as greatly known on the main land as he is in Hawai'i.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alone in IZ World
This album can take me away to places in my mind I have never visited before, although I have been to Hawaii many times. The quiet beauty of this timeless man's tender voice will forever be etched in my mind. Even the most childlike songs such as, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, take on their own IZ twist, not only in his voice but in the lighthearted bantering of his unabashed self. I feel in my heart that the world was cheated by his untimely passing but his voice will be singing sweet songs forever. Aloha. ... Read more

Hawaiian slack-key guitar began evolving in the 1830s, when Spanish and Mexican cowboys brought guitars to the cattle ranches of the Big Island. It became a recognizable style around the turn of the century. The term refers to the practice of slacking some strings from standard tunings to create open tunings; the thumb provides the bass line while the other fingers play melody and improvise. It might thus remind some listeners of the fingerpicking of a country master like Doc Watson, but the style has a wind-blown, wide-open quality all its own. Traditionally an accompanying instrument in a group setting, slack key has recently moved out front, and this all-instrumentals CD shows why. From the light touch of Moses Kahumoku or Leonard Kwan to the bluesiness of George Keo or Ray Kane to the pop feel of Keola Beamer, it offers the best possible introduction to the music. --John Morthland ... Hawaiian music can mean many things - anything from old steel guitar to contemporary "Jawaiian" music. Out of all the genres of Hawaiian music however, slack key guitar is probably the most accessible to those unfamiliar with any type. Simply put, slack key is a unique form of tuning and playing acoustic guitar - often with gorgeous results!

This collection of songs from Hawaii's most famous living slack key guitar artists is some of the most beautiful and relaxing music you may ever hear. Listening to each song, it is hard to believe that only one person is playing - each artist has a unique technique of playing both bass and melody at the same time.

If I were trapped on a desert island with the choice of only one CD, this would probably be the one I would choose. One final note - this CD contains excellent liner notes as well, which makes it is the perfect intro to slack key information-wise as well as musically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful guitar tuning and played from the heart.
I bought my wife this CD for her birthday. My musical reality was rocked forever at hearing the absolute beauty of this soulful, relatively unknown style. I am a surfer and have surfed in Hawai'i and spent lots of time with the local surfers there. They showed us lots of aloha and they are wonderful people with lots of respect for the ocean, land, etc.. Slack Key is an expression of this... played from the heart-- just beautiful. Hearing it made me want to play it-- to express the aloha "I" have inside. I even bought a Koa guitar to keep it pure (and a high end one to ensure I learn).

I'm just a sentimental fool (as Brian Ferry said).

5-0 out of 5 stars Mellow, mellow and very mellow.....
i can just imagine lying in a hammock on a palm fronded tropical beach with a cold drink in my hand enjoying the sunset. oh, and someone next to me is playing a slack key guitar. aahhhhh.... how nice.
yes this cd conjures up such pleasant images. however, what really happens is i listen to this cd on my computer while i'm doing work, and my surroundings are more of a concrete jungle than tropical beach; a less than idyllic setting. it's cool though, i'm still happy when this cd plays....

    5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet...sweet...da kine..
I am really shocked to see that this CD is in the top 1,500 in sales rank. That is a great suprise. More people into slack key than I knew. Cyril Pahinui's opener is a 12-string masterpiece, and my favorite cut is a classical guitar slack key track, "Pohakuloa", done by Moses Kahumoku. His style is simply as heartfelt as it comes. Keola Beamer is represented on this one, too. Might I suggest a CD by John Keawe, "Auhele" for some more serious mastery of this beautiful and unique genre. ALOHA!

4-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly nice
Goodness knows we've all listened to ticky-tacky, tourist versions of Hawaiian music. This CD was surprisingly nice, low key, steele guitar Hawaiian tunes with the sound of ocean surf in the background. At this price you can't pass up purchasing it for your luau or relaxing at home.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cute little album
This cute album has all the tunes you traditionally identify with Hawaii. It really feels like you are there. Some versions are a bit slow but its a real chill album.

4-0 out of 5 stars pleasant surprise
I bought this tape mainly because it had ocean waves sounds in the background, and because it was cheap. I fell in love with it, and still enjoy listening to it even though the luau theme party has long been over. the only thing keeping me from listing it as a five star cd, is that most of the songs are very slow and not too upbeat. But I'm still glad I bought it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quiet inspiring sounds of Hawaii
Listen closely and the sea rushes in, then you hear the relaxing sound of a Hawaiian guitar. Tiny Bibbles, The Hawaiian Wedding Song, Aloha Oe and more songs. Great music to chill out to,

5-0 out of 5 stars The legend The myth The man The haunting voice...Braddah IZ
I am a hawaiian and hawaii born and bred islander, I am blessed by the fact that my parents brought me up with hawaiian music but most of all the late great Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole. The day that shocked hawaii I was out and about with my family when my father stoppped at a gas station as he came out of the gas station a newpaper in his hand and a heartbroken look on his face..." what's the matter daddy" he handed me the paper and i started to cry there it was "Braddah Iz passed away at the age of 38 in his sleep last night" I couldn't beileve it such a beautiful voice silenced he will never make another record. But just to have had Braddah Iz on this earth for just this short time to hear the music with and without the makaha sons of Niihau is truly magical..so his music lives on. I've read all these amazing reviews of Braddah IZ...I am happy and touched that so many people have been touched by his music. Unforunately i didn't know braddah iz but in a way all us hawaii born islanders always seem to truly know braddah Iz, his music touched us all. to understand how huge Braddah Iz was he is still mourned and celebrated in hawaii and his music is still played constantly on the radio. The day of his birth and passing is celebrated like a national holiday. When you listen to any of the LATE and GREAT Israel Kamakwiwo'Ole's cds..you will hear one the most beauitful voices god ever put on this earth. But when you look at this man ,this giant man with this amazing angel like voice you will be blown away. god gave this late singer the voice of angel. a voice that must have been blessed and touched by god himself and it was...the songs , music and lyrics will leave you speechless and breathless ..his voice and the way he delivers the songs with that teardrop in his vocal chord...will send chills up and down your spine..any of this mans cds is excellent and it is a must of anyone who wants to get a cd that reflects the spirit of islands this man , this legend was the spirit of hawaii, BRADDAH IS WAS AND STILL IS HAWAII. even thou IZ passed away some time ago his voice his music his legend still lives is the islands thru his voice and music.his voice alone will leave you with a tear in your eyes... buy any one of his cds..trust me it's worth it...also braddah iz was with a hawaiian group called Makaha sons of Niihau pick up those cs as well, and let the memory of Braddah IZ and his music live on for the future generations to hear and love

5-0 out of 5 stars BRUDDAH IZ DOES IT AGAIN!!
Is there no end to this giant's majesty and magic with the new hawaiian music?? Every piece of music Israel has recorded goes right to the hear of the matter--the heart of the listener!! His voice, coupled with his presentation style easily captivates the listener, taking them deeper into what must be the most beautiful soul ever to record music. In Dis Life, the song, speaks to the heart of any person who has ever loved somoeone. The other songs, both traditional and original, let the Bruddah talk to us through the mastery of his art. I met this man while living in Hawaii, and have been in awe of that which he sang ever since. Buy this CD, sit back, turn on a water fountain for the sounds of the sea, and drift off to the world of Bruddah IZ. This CD ranks with all of his other music, the Best of the Best, of all the Hawaiian music there is to listen to. He was a GIANT...He lives on in his music for us all. ALoha!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great CD from a Great Artist
A big man physicially, Iz's musical talent was even greater. "In Dis Life," represents IZ at his very best, singing some traditional Hawaiian songs as well as some originals. His voice is both soothing and enchanting, and to me he represents everything that's wonderful about Hawaii. One of my favorites from this CD is "In This Life," but every song is wonderful.
    Five starts is not enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended by LOCALS
When I first travelled to Kauai in 1993, I went to the Lihue Kukui Grove Record Store where I met two very interesting women who first told me about IZ. He was, at that time, a local phenomenon. Both women had retired to this relatively remote island and had begun promoting Hawaiian artists. IZ was by far their most special find. For the next six years I met with them and tracked his career until his untimely death. Israel's first two albums, in particular, capture the unique song of the people and the refreshing independendence of the islands.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Giant Voice
I love this recording. IZ was a master of Hawaiian music and dedicated to his people and his culture. When he died, it was like the passing of Hawaiian royalty.

This album is perhaps less bittersweet than Facing Future (my favorite IZ album) but it is more consistent. Again, the best tracks are the traditional tracks in Hawaiian. Hi'ilawe is mesmerizing and 'Opae E is a beautiful track, with a tasteful and unabstrusive arrangement. The modern material is also quite beautiful, perhaps not instrinsically, but IZ could take the most mundane material and make it shine. Lover of Mine is a great example. In other hands it would be an undistinguished song, but IZ transforms it with the beauty of his voice.

    Highly recommended. ... Read more

Why is it that island cultures so often create the most magical, deeply individual sounds? Is it because they are usually miles away from corrupting outside influences? Perhaps it is due to the fact that they are forced to create music from their own inner resources. The powerful voices of Jamaican reggae, Cuban rumba, and Puerto Rican salsa have been joined on the world stage by Cape Verdean morna and Hawaiian slack-key guitar, and the hits just keep on coming. The tunes on this set are not terribly revealing about their place of origin, but plenty of likable grooves turn up, primarily dance-oriented party fodder. It's like a casual tourist's piña colada-fueled vacation fantasy: a very pretty and colorful interlude that doesn't have much to do with real life in either place. It's perfect for lazy summer days and nights, ethnic banquets, and tropical-themed celebrations. --Christina Roden ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Authentic Island Music
I love the international sounds of this CD! I normally like Calypso style music, and this is not that style; but it is unique and really quite good! It sounds like something I would hear traveling to exotic lands! A new sound for me, and after listening a few times, i've grown to really like it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories of my honeymoon.
After getting married, my husband whisked me off to the Island of St. Thomas. What an adventure. The people were so freindly (how can you be depressed when the weather is so perfect) and the food was decadent and gourmet. We intented to stay a week and ended up living to tell about a hurricane. At least you could say the biggest storms in our marriage happened on our honeymoon. After returning I searched for music to remind me of our fun filled days on the sun soaked sands. This music takes me back to where I want to be. If you haven't been to the Islands you will want to get some plane tickets, make some relevant excuse and get out of the cold. Take this CD with you on a car trip for a fun relaxing carefree trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sit in the sun, sip a Mai Tai...Aah!
It doesn't get much better than this. I love this album in the hot, hot summer. And it's great for chasing away the "no sun ever, winter blues" in Pittsburgh. This music makes me feel, happy and sexy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Instant vacation
This is a fine representation of island music and another home run for the folks at Putumayo! Put this on and I guarantee it will definitely help the winter doldrums. If you've been to the islands, you know what I mean, it will take you back. This is the real deal, not Jimmy Buffett ideal, (don't get me wrong , he's great although getting a bit commercialized) this is what you need for hosting an island themed party. Everyone loves it because it's so different. Exotic, but not over the top; It dosen't matter if you don't understand the lyrics, the music moves you at a more basic level that transcends language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Island Escape!
I heard this at my favorite coffee shop (The Coffee shop in Thornton Park - Orlando, FL) and had to have it. This is a great mix of island music that will transport you to the islands. Reminds me of days spent island hopping! After 'discovering' this Putumayo blend, I have ordered Calypso and other cd's. They are wonderfully relaxing to listen to while trapped at work dreaming of an island adventure! Great for the body and soul! ... Read more

I bought this for my 81 year old mother, we both LOVED this CD. I never bought any Hawaiian music before. I knew nothing about IZ and was heart-broken to discover he had passed from this world. Great audio clarity for a concert. Gorgeous voice. Wonderful selection of songs. If you're listening to music of this genre for the first time, I can't image a better CD exists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Iz Lives
Wow, is all you can say after you listen to the this cd, it's incredible. Opening, with the soft soothing ahi wela it gets a wonderfuil start. After four slow melodic songs margarita livens it up with a great modern sound that only Iz could perfect. The back half of the cd is even more unbeleivable with great tracks like n dis' life, white sandy beach, and hawai'i 78 that will put you in a trance. Topping it all off Iz sings E Ala E, the crowd alone sends chills right through me, the song is truly magical. The quality of this cd is fantastic it feels like you are there with Iz. It is a great collection of his music and if you are looking for Hawaiian music this is a must. Iz's voice sounds as if it is from heaven and he creates music that is completely unforgetable. So everyone go out and buy Iz:The man and his music, and never forget this great man with a giant's heart. Iz lives on in our hearts forever!!!!!!!!!

My friends came to visit me over the holidays. They had with them a cd player and were listening to some music. I walked into their Winnebago and was immediately transfixed by the voice of the man singing. I asked them who they were listening to. They said, "IZ". I had no idea who that was, but they saw tears well up in my eyes while I listened to him sing. When they left, they put the IZ - The Man and his Music, In Concert in my purse. I have listened to it over and over again. I can't believe what I had been missing. Five stars is truly not enough for this incredibly gifted man...a man who left our earth way too soon. ENJOY...ENJOY...ENJOY

This cd touches to the very heart of my innermost soul. Like so many, I had never even heard of Bruddah Iz while he was on this earth, but once I heard his voice, I was literally mesmerized by the beauty of it, and was virtually compelled to search the web for more information about him.
Much to my sorrow, I found he had already passed on a couple of years before. I bought several cds, and his video. That is all I have for now to touch his spirit. Maybe one day I will see him in person and hear his lovely voice among the angels. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this CD
Another group of songs by Bruddah Iz that makes you smile and stirs your soul. My favorite cut, Kamalani, still brings me to tears every time I listen to it. The entire CD is full of typical Israel music that speaks of human love and longing, as well as historical and present-day Hawaiian cultural issues. Never heavy-handed, but very informative. There's a VHS movie about Israel called Island Music Island Hearts, The Man and His Music. If you love his music you have to find this video. END

5-0 out of 5 stars IZ Introduction
This CD was the first I purchased of IZ. I was never really a fan of traditional Hawaiian music until I heard this album. To me, IZ seemed to represent an evolution of the traditional genre by developing a style that maintained the feel and integrity of the music, but merging it with a contemporary sound. I would recommend this CD, and any of his other albums. All of them have an equal balance of traditional Hawaiian, Reggae, and even some R&B.

5-0 out of 5 stars The CD that started my love for modern Hawaiian Music
I was visiting O'ahu in 1999 for my first visit back after moving away as a child. While searching the CD rack at the Bishop Museum for music that would help me 'feel' Hawaii, I suddenly realized that the music playing over the speakers was exactly what I was looking for. The young man at the counter showed me a CD by IZ (Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole), then suggested 'E Ala E', since it was his own favorite. I bought it, and when I got back to Utah I couldn't stop listening to it. I now have over 100 Hawaiian CD's - mostly purchased over the internet. I rate the quality of the music by how strongly I feel Hawaii when I listen to it, and "IZ" is one of the best. He may have passed on - but he will always live on in the hearts of his many fans (past, present and future!) through his music.

    Amazon.com essential recording

Better known among his fans as "Iz," Israel Kamakawiwo'ole was a phenomenon in the Hawai'ian Islands totally below Mainland radar. So important was Iz's singing to Native Hawa'ians and Hawai'i residents alike that Governor Ben Cayetano declared a statewide day of mourning when Iz passed away in 1997--this despite his controversial Hawai'i-sovereignty politics. Ka Ano'i was the 1991 winner of the prestigious Na Hoku Hanohano Award for best contemporary Hawai'ian album, and Iz himself won for best male vocalist that year. This album is appealing mainly for its honesty and simplicity: simplicity of tone consistent with the casual ukulele and slack-key sound, and honesty of voice through Hawai'i-enhanced allegorical tracks like "Coney Island Washer Woman" and "I'll Be There." A later version of Iz's "Over the Rainbow" was featured in the 1998 film Meet Joe Black, as well. Despite his imposing stature, Iz was an embodiment of the simplicity and gentleness in the music itself, more noticeable in this early album than in his later work. --Erik Macki ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Touched by an angel's voice
I think the main interest of this CD is hearing Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World in this version and then to hear the transformation into the version on Facing Future which has now been featured in at least two films and one momentous episode of ER.I know many people who have heard this version on screen and like myself have had to buy it instantly. I also like the beautiful Sea of Love and his uptempo, almost rocky Men Who Ride Mountains. Next up for me is to hear more of his CDs!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars There's more to an album than a 30 second soundbite
If you are looking for ethereal melodies, "Kana'i Aupuni" is hauntingly beautiful. The version of "Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" here isn't the one most are familiar with (it's found on the Meet Joe Black soundtrack and Iz's "Facing Fututure" album) but it's pretty groovy in its own right with its reggae inspiration. This is an early album, and it does suffer somewhat from overproduction, but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This album will most likely appeal more to people who are already fans of Iz than people who have never heard him before, but everyone should have one of his albums in their collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A precious and wonderful album!
Mahalo e Keali`i for sharing your aloha with us. This album is a wonderful tribute to his tutu, and his family, as well as everyone's family. The music is pure, in true Keali`i fashion that his fans love. I had tears in my eyes the first time I listened to "Ka Nohona Pili Kai". The entire album is filled with great music, in English and Hawaiian.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Mahalo, Keali`i!
Wow. Another fine album from this fine artist. His voice caresses the Hawaiian language, already one of the most beautiful languages on earth. His Hawaiian sounds like the Hawaiian that the kupuna speak. Combine that with the masterful poetry of the amazing Puakea Nogelmeier, and you've got music that is timeless. Whenever I listen to Keali`i singing, it makes me soooo homesick for Hawai`i. If that weren't enough, Keali`i is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet -- and so is Puakea. They both still live in Hawai`i and they don't have the big head because they are famous. Buy this album, buy all of his albums. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aloha Kakahiaka Amelika (Hello America)
This is by far the BEST music album I have ever bought from this web site. His music is so very relaxing yet it has a kind of a bump to it. I love his song 'Lahainaluna" because it's a great song and it comes from his heart. Kealii Reichel has a nice strong voice. If you come to Hawaii you'll know what I mean. I give Kealii ******. Mahalo Nui Loa kealii :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A fitting salute to TuTu Lady
Keali'i has created a soothing feast for the ears. It is a fitting tribute to the experience of unconditional love. As always, he has taken great care to properly pronouce the Hawaiian language without making it sound sterile. Keali'i has brought the essence of the spirit of Hawaii from the past and integrated it into the present with his flawless chanting. The simplicity of the music is brilliant. The listener does not have to speak fluent Hawaiian to enjoy his music because love in any language is understood. Mahalo Keali'i.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A life so fragile, a life so pure..."
I absolutely love the latest Keali'i Reichel CD, KE'ALAOKAMAILE. I am listening to it as I write, amazed at how the emotional depth of this CD moves me and others.

My hula teacher, Helene, who hides her soft, buttery heart with a tough exterior (that fools no one), called me as soon as she had given the CD a listen. Not only was she moved to tears, she was outright sobbing. Therein, lies Keali'i's talent. He doesn't just sing with a beautiful voice. Entrancingly, he sings with a reach that goes deep and touches the soul in its tenderest spots.

Well, besides singing, Keali'i does many things extraordinarily well -- this guy chants, dances the hula, and teaches both -- but singing to YOU, and seemingly to ONLY YOU, is what Keali'i does best.

The Aloha and Mahalo for his beloved grandmother, Kamaile Puhi Kane (1916-2000), now departed and to whom this CD is dedicated, are profound and most evident in its meaningful opening monologue and heart-stirring chant. Then through his lyrical music and with his incredibly clear and pure voice as an instrument, Keali'i spills his guts and honors her with songs that caress, soothe, and yes, heal at the deepest levels.

Each song is a facet that reflects a time in his life that was spent with his grandmother at her beachside home in Paia, Maui. And now almost four years after their sad parting, he generously and without self-consciousness shares with us their incredible grandmother-grandson relationship, one that now transcends time and space.

There can be no finer musical tribute for a grandmother by a grandson than this...she is immortalized with such deep Mahalo. Gramma must smile every time she hears someone playing her CD. Yes, in my mind's eye, I see her sitting in her chair, smiling her soft and gentle smile, nodding as she did.

This CD makes me smile a lot too. Keali'i's voice is a tension melter, a stress reliever. Pupu A'o Ewa was such a happy song that we sang as kids. And ahhh, the first time I heard Keali'i's joyous version in full HAWAIIAN -- not just the echo parts -- I couldn't believe how happy that childhood song could make me. For those moments, I AM that carefree, happy, coconut brown girl in rubbah slippahs, growing up in paradise in Pahoa, Puna, Moku Keawe. Now years later, in a foreign land, I am a soon-to-be god gramma, and I can't wait to teach this song to the little one one day, just as K sings it, as it was meant to be sung. Such is the power of K's music. It peels away the layers, the years, and goes deep to put one in touch with what is real and true in life.

The entire CD is easy on the ears. And the song selection and its variety make it the special and precious release that it is. Naturally, the Hawaiian songs enthrall me and gets me up out of this comfortable chair to dance my made-up hula.

I like Ka Nohona Pili Mai best; the word pictures transport me right back to my blissful, sun-drenched childhood days at my family's Kapoho beach home. And Lahainaluna -- ahh, there I go, up and dancing my hula!

The English selections are deeply touching. I was riveted by Fields of Gold when I first heard Sting sing it and my tears welled up then, never thinking then that Keali'i would sing it one day. Shhh! Don't breathe a word to Sting, but Keali'i does it better. My tears spilled over...

I'm so proud of(and happy for)Keali'i and Puna. As poignantly shared in the CD's liner notes, life threw them more than their share of curved balls, and they went through so much during that interim between CDs, yet somehow -- I like to think with Gramma's help -- they managed to produce yet another all-time classic. Such is the power of Aloha and hearts filled with Mahalo.

Out of loss, grief, trials and tribulations, a masterpiece! And Gramma lives on...

This second album in Dancing Cat Records' Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Series produced by George Winston follows its successful Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters. Again the masters of the genre are featured in several well-known tunes such as Lili'uokalani's "Aloha 'Oe" (played here by George Kahumoku) and "'Ulili E" (Dennis and David Kamakahi), as well as modern originals and two tracks that had not been available on CD before: "Ulu Niu Ke'eke'e" (George Kahumoku and Kekuhi Kanahele) and "Slack Key Serenade" (Leonard Kwan and Ozzie Kotani). The liner notes provide complete information on each song's original album.

A balance of instrumental and vocal tracks, the compilation is a terrific starting point for exploring the artistic and stylistic diversity in modern slack key. Instruments on this album include everything from traditional mouth bow, 'ukulele, and percussion stones to 12-string slack key and modern acoustic guitars. Elder statesman Ray Kane lullabies us with his simple instrumental "Popoki Slack Key" (popoki means "little cat"); renowned improviser Cyril Pahinui and Sol Hoopii-influenced Bob Brozman combine 12-string slack key and acoustic steel guitar interpreting "Hilo E" and "Lili'u E" in a style evocative of the 1920s. Showing off how slack key works solo, in duets, or with mixed accompaniment, this is one of the most beautiful slack key compilations out there. --Erik Macki ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A continuation, but with vocals this time.
This isn't truly a sequel to the first collection, but rather is a continuation adding, to the instrumentals, a few vocals to balance out the representation of music here. I personally could wish for more female vocals in addition to the "Bonus Track". I'm sure Hawaii has more than one notable lady singer.

That's not enough to take away a star though. This again is a most rewarding collection. However, I always associated the ukulele with hawaiian music and there's only one cut, "Pu'u Anahula" which includes one. There is more traditional music here than with the first collection, including the familiar and beautiful "Aloha Oe", a classic love song written by Queen Lili'uokalani in 1877. Also notable and familiar is the "Radio Hula" as played by Led Kaapana.

This record and its predecesser are great CDs to help create a romantic, tropical atmosphere. Hey, they'd be great background for a luau!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD to read or write to
This is a great CD to read or write to. Flowing, relaxing. A couple of tracks have a little too much non-musical guitar noise. Contrary to what another review said, I found the slide and vocal selections well integrated into the whole album. Haven't played Volume 1 yet -- I'm enjoying replaying Volume 2!

4-0 out of 5 stars The sequel's never as good
There was a copy of Vol. 1 lying around the office that I always passed over because I've never been a fan of Hawaiian music. But one day I put it on and it's been a favorite ever since. The guitar picking is beautiful and it has no distracting vocals or slide guitar. Vol. 2 has some of the same kinds of tracks, but the vocals and slide guitar on about half the songs inevitably conjure up tacky images of tourists getting some cruise ship docked in Hawaii.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm Summer Nights
An Excellent collection of true Hawaiian Music. This is the CD most hotels use when your wondering around their properties Excellent :) Aloha -

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for slack key guitar and Hawaiian music lovers.

The artists gathered together here hail from nations and cultures noted for the growing and export of coffee. As with this CD's companion release, Music from the Tea Lands, one senses the possibility of lucrative product tie-ins, but part of the proceeds from the album are earmarked for charity and any catchy idea that gets the music out there is a good thing. Like the luscious drink itself, the tunes come in many intensities and flavors, ranging from a light-as-air ditty from Peru, to the more complex vocal stylings of Colombia's Claudia Gomez, to Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca's earthy Afro-Cuban Congolese rumba. The album is a lively and fascinating travelogue, making landfall in Cuba, Kenya, Brazil, Uganda, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Costa Rica, Hawaii, and Peru. As with many other Putumayo projects, aside from its musical pleasures, this set would make an entertaining and educational experience for younger family members. --Christina Roden ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Coffee never sounded so good
I was tempted by this CD because I am a lifelong coffee addict. And, I love World Music, especially Latin American and African music, which has cross-fertilized each other back and forth since Africans were kidnapped and carried as slaves to the New World up to the Cuban influence in parts of Africa.

My favorite on here is "Maria Lando" by Susana Baca. She is big in Peru, her homeland, and a friend of David Byrne-- but unknown here in the US. What a shame. Her voice is clear and emotional having what the liner notes refer to as "sufferation"--that emotional outpouring of the downtrodden. You cannot listen to this and not be moved.

I also love the Ugandan Samite's "Wasuze Otya?". Samite survived the insanity of the Idi Amin regime in Uganda, ended up as a refugee in Kenya. He combines traditional Ugandan music with other sources such as, of course Jazz. It's wonderful--you can listen to a clip here, along with the Baca cut.

I was somewhat disappointed in the Brazilian "M'Ban Samba." This music is from Bahia, the African-rich north part of Brazil so of course quite different than the sambas and bossa nova of urban Brazil and the Cariocas. You can clearly here the strong African strain in the Bahian Sodre's music, and for that, it is interesting. It just is not my favorite cut on this album.

This is one wonderful CD for just listening or for dinner party background music. It casts such atmosphere, and is easy to listen to, yet not cliche in any way. The liner notes are prolific--there's a small booklet attached to the inside cover, and the cover has attractive artwork. I just love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Premier Blend To Sooth the Senses
I simply adored "Music of the Coffee Lands". I bought this CD simply because I wanted to have something to listen to when I have my morning cup of coffee. The music is so mesmerising. When one listens to this cd, it makes you feel as though you're being swept off into an exotic land. Some of my favorite tracks are: "Maria Lando" by Susana Baca, "Watsuze Otya" by Samite and "Below the Baseline" by Ernest Rangline. This is an excellent cd and it's worth every penny spent. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best world music compilataions I've heard
Amazing collection of songs - not one is a throwaway. If you're looking to break into "world music" the Putumayo collections are a great starting point.

I was walking past an upscale clothing store that was using this album as sonic wallpaper. It stopped me in my tracks. I walked in and demanded the album from the startled saleswoman.

And that was just one track. This is a true sampler album, designed to expand the listener's musical horizons. It succeeds spectacularly. The track that transfixed me was Thomas Mapfumo's "Hanzvadzi." That has led me to purchase every piece of music Mr. Mapfumo has ever recorded, has led me to travel several hundred miles to see him in concert, has led me to appreciate all the varied kinds of Zimbabwean music (try the classical mbira master Dumisani Maraire) and even to appreciate the ongoing troubled history of Zimbabwe.

The sampler would have done a fine job right there, but Susana Baca also sings here. Boy, does she ever. I'd never heard of her: the only South American singer I was familiar with was Astrud Gilberto. After swallowing Ms. Baca whole, I moved on beyond Peru and into other South American music.

So, I've developed a love of the music of two continents, all for the cost of a single CD. The "Coffee Lands" gimmick is mostly just that: the only thing that Susana Baca and Thomas Mapfumo have in common is that they both use notes, but that doesn't matter at all.

Disclaimer: Your experience may differ, but there is not a dud track on the album, and at least one track is going to jump out at you and land in your lap. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Hawaii's best
Keali'i Reichel is not only one of the best Hawaiian recording artists in Hawaii but also an extended family friend. Keali'i has played Carnige Hall, Hollywood Bowl, and done many concerts in places like Portland, Oregon...Seattle, Washington...San Francisco, and San Diego, California. Keali'i has a huge following in Japan, where he has traveled and done concerts. Hawaiian music, Hawaiian language, and a Kumu Hula teacher are very important to Kealii. Now a total of 5 cd's to his credit and a sixth to come out soon. "You have to hear him, and you will love him. Keali'i is a local native and resides on the island of Maui, Hawaii

5-0 out of 5 stars Kawaipunahele
Aloha mai, This is Keali'i's first cd. Kawaipunahele has the possible meaning of "the waters of pride". Keali'i has played some of the finest music here in the islands and is common on local radio. Also below ive added how to correctly pronounce hawaiian words since mispronouncing them can totally change the meaning.

    Hawaiian pronounciation:
a- as in father and aloha
e- as in send and ke
i- as in the two ees in see and in kilauea
o- as in low and moana
u- as in the two oos in cool and in ku
'- the 'okina or glottal stop that appears ONLY before vowels(pronounced like the sound made between the words oh when you say "oh oh")
    - -kahako or macron that goes above vowels, vowels that have the kahako are pronounced longer than those that dont.

Hawaiian never puts consanants together, there is always a vowel in-between. two of the same vowels (aa, ee) are always pronounced with the glottal stop in between.

This is one maika'i cd, you will not regret buying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!
Although I'm not Hawaiian, I've visited the islands a few times but I never got a real flavor till I heard this album. There is a magic and love for this culture heard in the songs of this album. Excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Addictive
This album has a very relaxing beat to it. When he sings it seems like Kealii is performing for his audience right in the comfort of your oun home. His music is very nice to listen to. Mahalo Nui Loa Kealii far your joyful music! :) :)

5-0 out of 5 stars syrupy but wonderful!
Yes, it's very very sweet, and his voice is quite melodic and gentle. But you won't regret this one if you want some beautiful music to get you through your day and lift your mood! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Denny makes the easiest Hawaiian getaway imaginable
Martin Denny wasn't the architect of exotica, but he was its chief innovator & master, and his first six records are absolutely essential. "Quiet Village" and "The Enchanted Sea," his fifth and sixth albums respectively, make up this disc. It's slightly more brash than other Martin Denny albums, but it still has plenty of its quiet moments. The trademark Denny sounds are present throughout; the exotic birdcalls, the varying light percussive instruments, and the dueling vibraphone and piano. Miles Davis, Sade, and Frank Sinatra all make music that is equally relaxing to the mind, but nothing relaxes me more AND takes me on a mental vacation to the South Pacific like Martin Denny.

Fortunately for all us fans, most of the great lounge composers have many works that have been wisely combined into 2-for-1 albums when the record lengths allow so. This includes most of Martin Denny's output from the late 1950s. Any one of Denny's albums would be an ingredient for a mini-vacation to Hawaii in your own backyard. Just find a warm breeze, get comfortable, grab the Polynesian cocktail of your choice, and put on a Martin Denny album. If this music is any indication, Hawaii must be expensive to travel to cause this makes it sound like heaven!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Hi-Fi Tropical Dee-lite
Have always loved Martin, so swank, so hip, so timeless. Transport yourself to locations tropical where all you should worry about is if the cabana boy can see that your drink needs a refill.

Denny has always been the master of tropical lounge. Not as silly and quirky as Arthur Lyman Group.

A must, to bring out the jet set in you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Different, unexpected, and absolutely awesome!
I completely wore out the LP I had of this incredible album and was just so thankful when I found out a CD had been made! It's retro, fun and just a great listen. Bird calls, exotic instruments, lots of percussion and a lounge feel to it makes this music one of a kind. I highly recommend this to fans of lounge and retro music and to anyone who wants a serious change from the norm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Music
Martin Denny created this music in the 1950's. He is a genius. Experimental people, buy this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cd gives quick vacation to paradise!
My father bought Quiet Village Lp while he was in the USAF. This is one of my favorite records I remember us listening to while growing up. The music relaxes the mind and body. It's like a quick vacation to paradise. This is a must have for lovers of the south pacific. Some of my favorites include Stranger in paradise, Paradise found, and Tune from Rangoon. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars King of Tiki
Martin Denny is well known as a god of Tiki music. This CD is a simple explaination why. It highlight's Denny's best works and then some. I was introduced to Tiki music by my father. Anyone who listens to tiki music will definately want to pass it on. Also an excellent CD because it has so many tracks

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Brother Cool
When I was ten, my oldest brother was very cool. He's ten years older, so he was already dating. He always favored blondes. He had mailing return address labels printed with his name, the name of his fraternity at Indiana University and "International Lover."

The part I remember that I like the best was being able to play records (LPs) from his cool collection. The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny was a favorite of mine. When I discovered the CD set, I was amazed and overjoyed. Memories from my pre-pubescent days flooded back. Now at age 48, I am once again in awe of my brother's coolness.

So, besides all the imagery of being in a tropical lounge, I remember my brother and all of the blondes he dated. I came back to Amazon.com to order a CD set for him, knowing that at age 58, he'll still be totally cool and once again with a lover in his arms.

Now, I wonder what ever happened to Connie Stevens and Hawaiian Eye.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanted Tiki Room approved!
Not long after buying this CD, I happened to take a trip to Walt Disney World in Florida and recognized "Quiet Village" as the music that was playing in their waiting line for the Enchanted Tiki Room--Under New Management. Had I not purchased this CD, I never would have recognized the song. Of course the cheesiness, '60s style, and subject matter of this music are ideally suited for that attraction. Anyway, if it's good enough for Disney, it's good enough for me. The notes from the other reviewers describe this CD and its background very well, much better than I can, so I'll add no more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful fun
There are many negative things you can say about exotica music in general and Martin Denny in particular:the music is kitchsy and corny, it's "easy listening" music, and its sole purpose was to aid a mass audience in getting slowly stoned on martinis.

All of which is true - nevertheless, I love Martin Denny. The innocence of the music and integrity and care in the production win me over. Martin has an unashamedly corny sense of humor, with one song in which a mosquito's buzz is the primary focus, and numerous songs punctuated by beautifully executed birdcalls. It's all put together seamlessly, as if these elements were the most natural things in the world to include. The production is meticulous, and the music surprisingly does not become repetitive or monotonous, which is no small feat in this style.

The music is not of Hawaii or Polynesia or any other "real" culture, but a complete commercial fabrication, the world of the tiki lodge and resort Hawaii. It brings the guilty pleasures of a Hawaiian vacation into your living room, soothes the spirit, and lets the mind drift away. A must for summer nights on the deck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take an exotic musical journey!
I got this album along with the Les Baxter companion album, Exotic Moods of Les Baxter. While Les was a great arranger & studio conductor, Martin Denny brought the music out of the studio and to the Tiki lounges of the world. The incredible birdcalls of Augie Colón as well as the sparkling vibraphones, flutes and drums all work together to create an imaginary jungle world just for you. The beats are sometimes primitive and heavy and at other times like rain on a bamboo roof. The music is that of imaginary exotic lands filled with mystery and adventure... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Melelana by Keali'i Reichel
On a recent trip to the Big Island of Hawaii, my husband and I were continually hearing "Ipo Lei Momi" from Melelana, wherever we went. When we couldn't get it out of our heads, we headed for a local bookstore for a copy of this fabulous cd. This purchase has truly become one of the best souveniors of our vacation as it brings back the spirit of the Hawaiian people and their beautiful language. Thanks Keali'i Reichel and keep the beauty of your language and music coming!

5-0 out of 5 stars Keali'i Reichel: Music that just can't be described
    Aloha and Hafa adai!

Some might call his music ispiring and uplifting. Many might say his music has a romantic feel to it. But whatever opinion you may have of Keali'i Reichel's music, you can't deny that it has an effect on you. I first really got a good listen of this Mauian's music last year, when I joined a local dance troupe that does hula numbers, a number of them meles by Keali'i. His songs are a mixture of the traditional, contemporary, and unique genres of music that each of us look for every time we pick up a CD for the first time. He sings about local legends, covers old-time favorites, and entices you with inspirational numbers (whether in english or in his native Hawaiian olelo) that makes you an instant fan. Take my advice, if you love the kind of music from the islands that takes your breath away, brings a tear to your eye, or a smile on your face, Keali'i Reichel is a must have for any die-hard Hawaiian music fan or somebody just getting into sounds from the 50th state. Believe me, you won't regret it. Mahalo nui loa and Si Yu'us Ma'ase!

4-0 out of 5 stars Blissfull nostalgia of mankind's past.
For a long time I have been a fan of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. The late folk singer introduced me to "island music" and my musical palate was satisfied, for a while. I later began listening to Cusco (another breathtaking act) but nothing has been as emotional,as astounding,or as reflective as Reichel.
Yes,I say reflective. Like an object in space that travels at the speed of light,I was everywhere at once while listening to this cd. This cd actually brought me to tears, and I don't even understand the language!
Anyway,Amazon.com is a great place to purchase cds. Not only does Amazon have cheap prices but they also have the largest selection of world music that I have seen in years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hawaii wouln't be the same without him.
This is one of the best albums Kealii has come out with. His tone is very sweet and mellow. You will certainly enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars absolutely delightful!
I bought this cd after a trip to the islands this year. I first heard him on the travel channel, and i had to look him up on the web...and kept listening to The Road Never Ends. I listen to this cd all the time, and even starting to get the hang of the words. This is the best "souvenir" I bought in hawaii! ... Read more

If you are looking to be transported to the South-Seas Paradise of Hawaii for an hour, then please don't buy this CD. I gave this CD the benefit of the doubt when I saw that it was made in Canada, and gave it a spin. Boy, was I disappointed.
