5-0 out of 5 stars Hot from start to finish--you will never forget this CD.
This CD is simply one of the classics of Latin Pop, defining the music genre in many senses. If you are starting a Latin Pop collection, this record cannot be ignored. You will play this CD once--and continue to play it over and over again. A timeless masterpiece of inventive pop that even the artist himself has had difficulty replicating.

One of his best album...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the first of the great Luis Miguel CDs
You must get this CD!!! Every song is just beautifully arranged and sung, some pop and romantic. Also get 20 Anos, Aries, and Nada Es Igual, they are all classic Cds!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplemente genial - no sólo para sus incondicionales
The first of the really good Luis Miguel records. Has some classic ballads and funky uptempo songs. An excellent latino effort from this amazing singer and a good place to start your collection.

... Delicious--that's the perfect way to describe Spanish vocalist Rocio Durcal's Alma Ranchera. The appropriately titled songbook of ranchera classics seems written specifically for Durcal, who infuses every lyric with charm, class and a touch of sass. It's an alluring combination that crackles with a crisp, modern energy. The album is equally energized by the lush, exquisite production and arrangement of Memo Gil and Carlos Cabral "Junior," who have made Alma Ranchera a first-class affair. Durcal's take on such gems as Vete a Volar, Cucurrucucú Paloma and Fiesta en el Corazon is absolute perfection. She even tackles La Media Vuelta, a standard often associated with Luis Miguel, and makes it her own. Durcal's voice, always in fine form, is nothing short of superb here. It doesn't get much better than this. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

Top grupo Temerarios takes a left turn on this ranchera tribute collection. Best known for keyboard-driven romantic cumbias, the Angel brothers, Adolfo and Gustavo, give their pipes a solid workout on gut-wrenching rancheras, considered the heartland music of Mexico. Just as cowboys and country music evoke America around the world, mariachis and rancheras are instantly recognized as Mexican icons. Surprisingly, the group pulls it off convincingly, especially on such classics as "Renuncacion," "La Diferencia," and "Que De Raro Tiene." While the brothers obviously do not compare to the original torchy singers like Javier Solis, Vicente Fernandez, or Cornelio Reyna, they bring a fresh, distinctive touch to gems such as "Lloraras," and "Sombras." --Ramiro Burr ... They don't seem to get much attention but they are actually pretty popular singers. They are from Michoacan Mexico and they are a duo of singers. I like them because they have songs seldom known which are pretty. If you want to collect and hear more songs get one of their cd. They sing popular songs that are known but are seldom recorded. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars From Mexico's Golden Era
Miguel Aveves Mejia is on the cusp of the three major Mexican singers of Rancheras and popular music from it's golden age. He is right there with Javier Solis, Jose Alfredo Jiminez, and Pedro Infante. These guys came outof an era where not only were they singers but they also appeared incinema. Aceves has a unique voice and style that has no rivlas, he's in alegue of his own. He sings beautiful Huapangos, a carribean Mexican stylenative to the Veracruz region. Aceves hits some notes that are so high itis unbelieveable and not to be missed. What is even more incredible is thathe can hold these for an inhuman length of time. The musicianson this CDare often the renowned Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan, but the star isAveves and his beautiful voice. He also starred in cinema as anotherMexican "singing cowboy" who crooned his way through his movies."Los Laureales" and "La Malaguena" are two exemplarysongs that display his wonderful range. This is nusic from a bygone erathat will probably never be duplicated. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Legends never die
As a tribute album Pablo Montero does an excellent job of paying tribute to Javier Solis. I had never heard of Montero until reading an excellent review at Amazon a few years back about the CD "Que Voy Hacer Sin Ti " which perked my interest. Once on my radar screen I heard him sing on a Mexican novela(Abrazame Muy Fuerte?) and I wanted to hear more. Being a big fan of long deceased singer Javier Solis I was thrilled to see this release. Montero sings this collection of songs with more than tribute in mind as he even tries to mimick Solis's style, not overtly but in suttle ways. The rich voice of Solis cannot be copied but Montero cleverly throws in some gritos(gutteral yells) that sound like Solis and was sort of a trademark of his songs. Pablo Montero seems to be walking in the footprints of legends, trying to retain the singing charro(Mexican cowboy)image with dutiful respect; you get the impression Montero knows his(countries) past and wants to keep it alive. The arrangements on this disc are flawless, beautiful lush mariachi music accompanyment that plays second fiddle to Montero's voice. The songs chosen are some of the best by Solis but curiously missing "Payaso" which is the song probably most associated with Solis. There are several Augustin Lara compositions, "La Cumbancha" and the young torero song "Novillero" which features the lyrics and a picture of Montero in the bullring finishing a move with the capote(cape) leaving him wrapped in a swirl of magenta. Several outstanding tracks include the beautiful love song where Montero gives thanks to his lover, "Gracias,"(tengo que darte las gracias, por estar cerca de ti y por las miles de cosas que yo he sentido junto a ti "), the often recorded and familiar song "Cuando Caliente El Sol," "Entrega Total" a great song about solitary love, the catchy "Moliendo Cafe" and one of Solis's signature songs "Sombras," where Montero's phrasing is in places about as close as you can get to bringing Solis back. This is a wonderful and fitting tribute disc by one of the young Mexican singers looking to find their place amongst the legends of Mexico's past. The accompanying booklet is terrific, complete with lyrics ( sorry, Spanish only), great color photographs and a magnifient black and white center double page of Montero laying carnations down at Javier Solis's grave site with a personal written message of gratitude to Solis. I saw an interview with Montero when he was promoting this disc and he said it was a very emotional visit so it more than just a posed photograph. In the end Pablo Montero delivers a super set of songs, at times sounding very much like Solis and always singing with deep conviction and pride. This is one of those discs that will get plenty of play in your rotation now and in the future. Recommended for fans of Javier Solis and Pablo Montero and those that like ranchero boleros and mariachis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellente!
Beautiful rendition of traditional songs of types not in his usual repertoire. The paso doble "Novillero" is exciting and a wonderful counterpoint to "Las Rejas No Matan", the most traditionally Mexican song on this release and the one with the most lush accompaniment. All the musical arrangements are gorgeous and Pablo's voice grows more versatile and more heroic with each new release. I own everything this divinely-gifted (and uncommonly handsome) man ever recorded and absolutely recommend all his titles. I also strongly recommend to all females reading this review to attend at least one of his concerts; you will be completely blown away. His stage presence matches his voice perfectly and he is a first-rate performer who appreciates the attention he earns in the process.

Photos and lyrics included; unfortunately, the mouse type that lyrics are printed in can be a challenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pablo's most ambitous cd
In his new cd, Pablo tackles more challenging material than in his previous cds. His voice may not have the power or range of Alejandro Fernandez but his new cd seems less commercial and every song has its own charm. Pablo's version of "Gracias" is the most beautiful I have heard. What a wonderful tribute to Javier Solis!

4-0 out of 5 stars Payaso
... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Definate Growth
Gloria really let's her music talk in this new release. Even her image has shown how much she has changed. Here's my breakdoen of the songs on the album...

Como Nace El Universo- I wouldn't have picked this song as the opening for the album. It's a nice soothing song to listen to. Not my favorite. 3/5

Eres Un Santo- I love this song. My favorite on the album. I think this song is one of her best ever. It has awesome lyrics, and great music to go with it. 5/5

Nieve de Mamey- This song takes me back to her old music. I don't like it because I don't think it goes with the album. This is supposed to be a new album with a new sound and this song doesn't cut it. 2/5

Senor Presidente- Nice soothing song. Not the best. 3/5

Metida Hasta El Cuello- I like this song. It's a nice song to cruise too and just sing along to. Great lyrics. 4/5

Timbres Postales Al Cielo- Beautiful song. Enough said. 4/5

Horas Tranquilas- This song is awesome. I love the arrangement and mood of this song. Very mysterious. I love it. 5/5

La Nota Roja- I don't really like this song. Too much like her old stuff. 2/5

El Domador- It's a fun sexy song to listen to. Catchy! 3/5

Sexo y Dinero- This song is awesome. I like the whole sex sounding music. Very catchy, and her voice sounds cool. 4/5

Poder y Fama- This song needs some work. Reminds me of this old song she did. 2/5

En Medio de la Tempestad- This song is beautiful. She really shows her vocals at the beginning. Loving it. 5/5

Overall, this album is a deffinate growth. She's destined to many more hits. Go Gloria!!!!

I averaged my ratings and the album gets 3.5 Stars

5-0 out of 5 stars A MYTHICAL REBIRTH
Gloria Trevi's new contribution to the music world is stronger than any of her previous works. The lyrics, vocals and acoustic sets are honest, staightforward and powerful. The hauntingly beautiful and dramatic "Horas Tranquilas" alone is worth the price of this album. But there are plenty of goodies here: with the fun, high-energy "Nieve de Mamey" La Trevi once again has her way with the machos of America and manages to shock even those of us who were familiar with her rebellious and unpredictable nature. Considering her recent situation, it's a fantastic thing to realize: Gloria Trevi is having fun.

Among other things, La Trevi addresses love, family, the social reality of Mexico, the loss of her daughter (the sad, hopeful and beautifully sung "Timbres Postales al Cielo"), lust, ambition, and in a magnificient closing number, the human will to survive in the face of adversity: "En Medio de la Tempestad" is Gloria's way of inviting us to fearlessly brave the storm and walk into a brighter tomorrow, with a smile on our face and not a trace of doubt.

Gloria's compositions, her words when interviewed, and her total and direct connection with the public and herself when performing paint a clear picture of her nature: she is the real thing, a bona fide artist. She is never, ever, ever pretending to be something she's not, a habit that her contemporaries (think Thalía, Paulina Rubio, etc.) engage in as standard practice. Gloria Trevi is who she is, original, unabashed and unapologetic. She has lived Dante's Divine Comedy, and it shows: through her personal hell the woman has gained wisdom and strenght, and oddly, the tremendous injustice she suffered has not made her grown bitter or lose even a fragment of the spice, power and magic that led her to conquer the masses in the first place. This album showcases it all, untouched and ready for us to dive into.

When Gloria Trevi was unjustly incarcerated it literally felt like a major fragment of Latin American pop culture went to prison with her. It's disturbing to hear that she had to wait in jail for five years until all the factors came into play for her innocence to be proven. The ongoing success of this album gives us hope, and her vindication is our own: we have been given back that which was taken from us by the disorganized and donwright frightening judicial system of Latin America. "Cómo Nace el Universo" is, as one of my friends called it, a real life happy ending. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHAT JUAREZ IS MISSING!
Thirty years ago or so I asked a street hustler in Juarez where I could go to hear mariachi or other reasonably authentic Mexican music and was told, "We don't play that cheat no more. You wanna hear that cheat go back to San Antonio." Never did find it..until I stumbled on Flaco's Amigos. It was worth every minute of the waiting. Talk about a bargain. Not only did I get Flaco Jimenez's considerable skill on the accordion, but I discovered that Flaco teams up on several songs on this disc with the talented Peter Rowan (famous for his "Free Mexican Air Force Is Flying Tonight," one of his duets with Flaco.) And THEN I found one of Flaco's amigos was one of my long standing musical amigo, Ry Cooder, who turns up here with his customary panache on mandolin and slide guitar. This one's a bargain at ten times the price.! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars He's got the bases covered
A clandestine affair. A relationship just out of reach. Beauty. Passion. Suffering. And, the love for a son. Mr. Joan Sebastian has the love bases covered, to perfection. "Me Gustas" is the REALLY big hit on this CD. I had never even heard of Joan Sebastian until that song was being played on every street corner, in every supermarket and from every car radio in town, and I went out in search of that honey-smooth voice. "Anoche Hablamos" has a Julio Iglesias sound to it except for the "tu, tu, tu" of Juan Gabriel fame. Absorbing. The catchy "El Toro," a traditional rendering with "Bravos" and "Oles" is actually an analogy in which Sebastian likens suffering to bulls attacking the soul. Poor taste but good sounds. This whole CD is excellent. The only way it falls short is in quantity. It's only 34 minutes long, but 34 pleasing minutes they are.

5-0 out of 5 stars el poeta
This is Joan's most successful CD to date, and deservedly so. Though his voice is showing a few signs of wear, he's still a marvelous singer, and his songs are so full of poetry and candor.

The hit single from this CD is "Secreto de Amor", about a secret love affair, and has an infectious bolero rhythm. It's a slightly new sound for him, with a catchy refrain that you'll find yourself singing along with.

Another lovely song is "Amorcito Mio", also about a discreet love..."amorcito mio~mio tan del alma~mio tan escondido~mio tan especial"...my favorite track of all is "El Toro", about how to conquer sadness using the imagery of a bullfighter. The lyrics are terrific and wise, and the guitar work of Ramon Stagñaro is sensational, as it also is in another wonderful song, "Anoche Hablamos" about a "kiss and make-up" scenario.

The booklet insert has easy to read lyrics and info (so appreciated by me) and photos, including a lovely one of his son Julian, the subject of the last track on the CD.

Joan's melodic songs seem to be slices of his life, beautifully written lyrics that tell personal stories and shared with his listeners. He's one of my very favorites, a great artist with much to give the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Secreto de Amor: Secret of a great CD
Let's start with the final verdict: guilty of first degree superb music. For those of you who want a taste of great musical arrangements and poetry, well you'll find it here. For those of you who want some playfulness in song, you'll find it here too. For those who want folklore, here it is. If you want it with a country twang, ditto. A sensual love song? No problem. A simple story, or something with a dance rhythm? You should know the answer by now. Albums usually have one or two songs that grab and hold a listeners attention. Be ready to be carried away by this album. If you want to know the secret of a great cd, then listen to Secreto de Amor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible singer songwriter
This was my first taste of Joan Sebastian's music,I had heard the song "Secreto de Amor" on a local Latino station and after several tries to listen carefully to the D.J.when he announced the title and artist,I gave up and asked a chicano friend if he knew the song, well luckily he did and got me headed in the right direction. I thought this would be a c.d. I'd like a song or two on and that would be it,since my Spanish is not that great, but what a surprise, this c.d. is so well produced it will blow you away whether you understand the language or not.It would be described I guess as Mexican "country".Joan is an incredible singer songwriter, every song is a hit in my book.I would recomend this C.D. to anyone who appreciates a little spice in their music. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Caifanes, El Silencio

5-0 out of 5 stars Caifanes, El Silencio

5-0 out of 5 stars Caifanes' Best
Excellent CD. The super group, Caifanes, reached a zenith with this album. Undoubtedly the very best they produced. It is like a greatest hits CD. The lineup of Saul, Sabo, Diego, Alfonso, and Marcovich is great.

5-0 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE
SAUL HERNANDEZ IS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED MUSICIAN/SONGWRITER THATS OUT THERE AND HE PROVED IT WITH THIS CD. I RECOMMENED THIS CD TO ALL THOSE WHO LOVE ROCK! ALL THE SONGS ARE GREAT ESPECIALLY "NOS VAMOS JUNTOS" AND "MERICOLES DE CENIZA" ITS A MUST BUY CD. I LOVE THIS ALBUM.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great rock cd -:)
This one is one of the best Caifanes/Jaguares cds, along with Bajo el azul de tu misterio and El diablito. I bought this just a few weeks ago, and it is still amaizing! You have great rock songs such as "Miercolenz de ceniza" "El comunicador" and "Nos vamos juntos". And softer songs such as "Debajo el tu piel" and "Estas Dormida". This one is MUCH better then their new album, which I find some of disappointing(its still good but not as good as this). The last song is a beautifull latin ballad, which is very untypicially for them to do. You english rock lovers should check out Caifanes and other rock en espanol bands, they will make you wonder why u didnt bought spanish rock since the day it was born -:) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey, it's not all THAT bad! :)
Whether this album is wonderful or not that hot depends on your point of view.

True, if you're looking for 30 unforgettable Rigo Tovar songs in their full length, exactly as they originally appeared, then this album is not for you. Hey, it's 30 songs! You can't possibly fit 30 songs at their original length of 4 minutes or more onto a single CD! That's 120 minutes or more and one CD just isn't long enough!

Likewise, if you want the music and just the music and nothing more, then this album is also probably not for you. Each of the songs on this CD is introduced by a brief (just a few seconds) something-or-other -- like restaurant sound effects mimicking the idea of music in the background at a restaurant, or a deejay introducing the song as if it's playing on the radio. This is (judging from the other reviewers) annoying to some people, and if you're like that then this will be annoying to you, too.

On the other hand... once the vignette part is over the rest is pure, unadulterated Tovar.

The music that makes up the large majority (over 90%) of this CD is the original, real Rigo Tovar. All of the choruses. Many (most?) of the verses. Basically, exactly the same recordings you recall from when you fell in love with his music back when you were a kid.

Soooooo... if you want to recall Rigo's unforgettables -- 30 of them! -- this may well be the album for you. If you want the 100% complete, unchanged originals? Well, you'll have to go elsewhere for those and you'll have to buy several disks. It's up to you!

1-0 out of 5 stars Songs ruined by overdubed intros. STAY AWAY!!!
The songs on this CD are, at least in their original form, great. But some idiot decided that they would add their "ideas" to the intros of all of the songs on this CD. Basically, the intros of all of these songs are overdubed with idiodic comments that, I guess, were supposed to serve some purpose. THIS RUINS EVERY CUT ON THIS CD!! Whoever decided to do this to RT's songs should be hung out to dry!

DO NOT BUY THIS CD!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Who is that guy?
Disappointing.Unfortunately while these do sound like the original recordings of Rigo Tovar and his Costa Azul, they have added a voiceover that constantly interrupts each track with tacky poetry or a mock conversation between a couple (who are these people?).The song I bought the cd for (Palabritas) is hard to find - on this cd, not only is it interrupted at the beginning by this voice, but is not even allowed to end before the voice cuts in again and another song begins. Terrible! ... Read more
