Ely Guerra has been compared to PJ Harvey and Joni Mitchell, not to mention fellow Mexican music diva Lila Downs. But whereas Downs's music looks back as it looks forward---some of her influences are traditions that go back centuries---Guerra has always been firmly entrenched in modern day styles on both sides of the border. Her fourth album opens with "Te Amo, I Love You," which is a Spanish language rocker that ferociously roars. Soon she turns to touch on percolating electronic pop, subdued ballads and organic urban grooves that recalls songwriter Joe Henry. Amidst these different music flavors, Guerra's voice grandly soars overhead, coos to a lover, whispers and cajoles, proving she is as versatile as her backing. It's no surprise that the album is called Sweet and Sour, Hot Y Spicy; Guerra shares a lot of different sides of herself on it. Indeed, Guerra's decade-long career is an illustrious one, but this is an album is a real bright spot. --Tad Hendrickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars La Nueva Reina de Salsa
Over the years, there seems to be a new Latin Craze about once per decade. Frenesi contains some great songs mostly from crazes of years gone by. If you speak Spanish, you already know that most of the songs on the album are incredibly sexy and sensual. (If you don't, then you can read the English translations in the liner notes.) I know the songs from my father's albums and knew that this was going to be a great album as soon as it was issued.Ronstadt's voice is perfectly suited to the delivery of these torrid Latin classics. She and Tish Hinojosa rate at the top of my list of female American performers who sing in Spanish. Linda is at top form throughout the album and the quality of the music is such that I wonder why she doesn't abandon other genres and stick to salsa exclusively. From the sexy title cut to the poignant Verdad Amarga, Ronstadt shows herself capable of expressing the full gamut of human emotion in song.My favorites are the aforementioned two songs as well as the plaintive Despojos, Entre Abismos, and the classic Perfidia. Buy this album and you'll see why Ronstadt so richly deserves to be called the New Queen of Salsa.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frenesi is a gem among Ronstadt albums.
If you're looking for a great selection of Ronstadt songs in Spanish, this is it! Far superior to the Canciones series, Frenesi really showcases Ronstadt's Latin heritage and rich voice beautifully. It's amazing how through her golden throat you can feel the poetry of the pieces without knowing a word of Spanish! Two thumbs up, WAY up!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Ronstadt
Just bought my third copy. Ronstadt's voice is at her peak....clear as a bell. Great melodies and orchestration. I pass this around to buddies studying Spanish at the local college....gets you in the zone. It is truly amazing that despite being a 'pocha'.....second generation Latina....she doesn't SPEAK Spanish.....Amazing....

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't get more authentic than this.
Linda Ronstadt clearly has a Spanish soul to be able to sing in such an expressionable and authentic way. This record is one to buy and play often. Ray Santos and orchestra perfectly matches and compliments the vocals, and marvellously sets a salsa mood. Technically the recording is well done and the choice of tracks is very satisfying; the songs go together well. Buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A trip back to early childhood.
When I listen to "Frenesi," I am immediately transported back to the house parties my parents attended back in the late '60s and early '70s. As third generation Latin Americans living in LA, they were less interested in traditional Mexican or South American music and much more into the cha-chas, rhumbas and mambos of the Hispanic Caribbean. Unlike Gloria Estefan's similar CDs which can sound overwrought, Ronstadt's treatment of songs like "Perfidia," "Frenesi" and "Piel Canela" are precise, elegant, heartfelt and beautifully performed. I'll bet she used to watch her parents and uncles and aunts dance to this music, too. Anyway, she's the best "Norte Americana" interpreter of this sort of material (not counting Marc Anthony or Lila Downs, of course, who came after this) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner
If there's any validity to the adage that time improves all good things, Juan Gabriel's most recent release, Inocente De Ti, proves it true. The CD arrived in Mexico in January 2004 as Gabriel celebrated his 54th birthday. Time has been good to the Mexican icon, and the quality and variety he offers his fans in this CD illustrate it.
The first couple tracks, including the title track, run a little slow-great Gabriel for when you're in that laid back mood. If you're feeling a little friskier, however, hold on for songs like "Amor Profundo" which is quite unlike what we've heard from Gabriel in the past. Call it big band, call it swing-call it the genius of Gabriel once again treading beyond the confines of the traditional. "Amándote" is another upbeat number as is "Como Te Quiero" whose backup vocals are synthesized. If you yearn for the sounds of Mexico, check out "Idilio."
The most delightfully painful rendition on this CD comes in the form of "Loco Enamorado." Backed up by subdued Mariachi, Gabriel shows that he has not lost his touch in making songs to cry by. "El Fin" is another tune to accompany tears in the tequila. He provides his own vocals in harmony, a feature that is becoming more and more popular with this delightful pop singer.
Even the best can't be perfect and Gabriel has been known to have a few off days-days when his voice reflects the strain of 30-plus years in the music business. There's no off day on this CD. The entire production is top-notch. His renditions are honey-smooth and he demonstrates all of the elements that have made him famous, including the little hiccup in his voice at just the right places.
Gabriel's charismatic showmanship doesn't come across as it does in his finest works, the two live CDs and videos at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, but for a studio production, Inocente De Ti is as good as it gets.
Gabriel is the author of all of the numbers and the lyrics are provided on the insert. The insert also includes a statement of an unsettling nature. He writes (translated from Spanish), "I want to show my appreciation to BMG for their support during all of these years in this, my second to the last project, with them. Juan Gabriel." What could this mean?

5-0 out of 5 stars Y Aqui Estoy

5-0 out of 5 stars Lo Nuevo de Juan Gabriel
... Read more

Many fine singers have come close, but Javier Solis is still regarded by many as the best bolero ranchera singer Mexico has ever produced. Since his death in 1966, there have been dozens of hit compilations. Luckily, this collection contains most of Solis's biggest hits: "Payaso," "Cenizas," "Sombras," "Media Vuelta," "Lloraras, Lloraras," and "Si Dios Me Quita la Vida." And while Solis got most of the credit, it's important to remember he worked with topflight producers, studio musicians, and, most critical of all, excellent song material from Rafael Ramirez ("Lloraras, Lloraras"), Luis Demetrio ("Si Dios Me Quita la Vida"), and Jose Alfredo Jimenez ("Media Vuelta"). But the combined power of vivid tearjerker songs enveloped in gorgeous mariachi arrangements is nothing without Solis's exquisite vocals and tough but compassionate stance. --Ramiro Burr ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good collection of her spanish songs
I just got finish listen to this cd and I love it to death she is now one of my new favorite artist in spanish. I love her voice it is very strong and I can't wait to get more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect Compilation Of Her Songs In Spanish
I give this cd 4 9/10 stars because:

1) In the liner notes she incorrectly describes the song Piel Canela as one of the most beautiful songs from México. Although this song has been recorded by artists of many countries, the Original Hit Version was recorded by its composer the late Bobby Capó, a legendary singer/songwriter/entertainer from Puerto Rico.

2) The Spanish version of Blue Bayou( Lago Azul) should have included, she still sings it in her concerts. ... Read more

Lila Downs's sophomore U.S. release sees her take a much more folkloric tack than her debut, delving into the mystical codices of the Mexican Mixtec natives (her ancestry on her mother's side)--not that the entire album is made up of ancestral songs. There's also "Nueve Viento," a bolero son as rich and satisfying as anything to come out of Buena Vista Social Club. But the heart of this album beats strongest when it's barest, making the stark "Yunu Yucu Ninu" (which she performed differently on her debut) into an eerie delight. Blessed with a remarkable voice, operatic training, and jazz chops, Downs can cover a lot of territory. "Tres Pedernal" recalls the husky Tropicalia of Gal Costa. With its look at native culture and lore, this is a record that delves much deeper than Mexican pop, marking Downs as a serious singer of talent and depth. --Chris Nickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to roots
To the anonymous music fan from Seattle....shame on you. You have no idea what traditional Mexican music is...you must be one of those people that think burritos & "combinations" are traditional Mexican cuisine and that waltzes performed by misguided sell out mariachi bands are traditional Mexican music. Just as there is infinitely more to Mexican cuisine than is available in the U.S., consciousness about Mexican music is very superficial. Are southern gospel tunes or appalachian jigs any less American than Glenn Miller or Elvis Presley just because they were never discovered by mainstream audiences? While it is true that Lila fuses foreign influences with indigenous doesn't invalidate it...because Mexico's essence is one of mestizaje (fusion...racial, idiomatic, visual, and musical).

5-0 out of 5 stars exotic and intense musical experience
I bought this album on the recommendation of Amazon readers. It turned out to be much more than I had hoped. Ms. Downs is willing and able to do more with her voice than I have heard from almost any singer anywhere. Her voice is not operatic but she has a HUGE range, and she uses it to invoke moods to match the songs she sings. The expressiveness of this album is so intense that it is impossible (or perhaps shameful) to use it as background music. In addition to songs in Spanish, Ms. Downs sings a number of songs written in Mixtec, Zapotec and Nahuatl languages. Some of them express their cosmology; others are about living life as a person with troubles. All are beautiful, under the sure and elegant hand of this amazing lady of music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not quite what I was looking for....
I was looking for a traditional Mexican music. What I got was more of Spanish/new age/earthy album. Don't get me wrong...it is really nice and Lila has quite a vocal range with a beautiful voice. She is also very expressive. Similar to Enya, with a Spanish/Indian feel to it. It is nice quiet background music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mixtec Mexican Diva
Like a mystical Mexican goddess beckoning me I picked this CD up by instinct as I was drawn to it. Was it Frida Kahlo reincarnated or the ancient ones calling? Who knows, I'm just glad I bought it. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn about this marvelous artist, Lila Downs, a Mexican diva with roots and upbringing on both sides of the Rio Grande. Her musical sensibilities come from formal opera training and an education in the US as she was born to a Oaxacan mother and a father from the United States. Lila Downs is unquestionably one of the artists to watch as she matures. This her sophmore effort is a masterpiece, shrouded in mysticism from ancient codices, Lila delivers interpretations that are exquisite manifestations of her being. Her voice trainng has allowed her to sing with unlimited range and depth, a true diva. Her music is contemporary folkloric songs that are performed in various indigenous languages of Mexico that touch a deep cord in one's soul. To listen to her sing in any language is delightful but the when she does in Mixtec it is something very special, ethereal, otherworldly, a communique from her ancestors, poetry from long gone souls for the living to learn from. Don't believe me? Take a listen to the sampler version of "Yunu Yuca Ninu" and listen to Lila speak softly to your soul. She wrote the music for this song about the immigrants who leave Oaxaca every year, some to never return, based on a poem. She performed this song on her first US release also but differently. Listening to this CD borders on a mystical experience, it is undefineable, something that can only be experienced. It is as though it is not neccessary to read the booklet that has all the translations, the music speaks in words that connect straight to your soul.I suppose the lyrics will further illustrate the concepts, I just haven't bothered yet. Lila Downs, the Mexican diva deliveres her message eloquently with jazzy backgrounds that includes melodic harmonica, guitar, harp, flute, marimba, sax and soft percussion that includes clay pots and drums that do not distract but further accentuates her marvelous voice. Her range fluctuates to the point where it is hard to believe it is the same singer. That one person can do so many things with their voice is a marvel, and to be able to annunciate in so many different languages is something very special. She takes on a husky voice in the opening Zapotec song, "Simuna" but slightly transforms her voice halfway through giving hints of her operatic talents. On "Nuevo Viento" she further displays her capabilities as she opens up further displaying talents that don't come along very often. "Arenita Azul" is the only song that has a Caribbean feel to it, she sounds like a young Celia Cruz. "La Iguana" is a happy huapango that illustrates the things Lila can do with her voice as she assumes one of her many different sounds. She is magical. About as far away from pop as you can get this CD fits into the "World music" category, charting an unwritten path. Her talent is extraordinary, she composed seven of the tracks and of course sings in four languages. The accopanying booklet is a prize as there are all the lyrics written in original language, English and Spanish. Mixtec images from various codex's were borrowed and are colorfully reproduced. This from my perspective should especially appeal to those who like anthropolgy as Lila's music is delves deep into her Mixteca roots. Lila had descended from the clouds in the mountains of Oaxaca to share her ethnic vision that comes from the duality of her being. Lila Downs is a Mexican diva for the new millennium, she is very special, she speaks directly to one's soul, from deep within her heart she touches you. Buy this CD for an experience that comes from the ancient codices of Mexico.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gorgeous album by an equally compelling perfomer
Lila Downs is a Mexican artist who delivers her music with such intensity, soul and passion that you cannot remain unmoved. On the concert stage she has a grand presence and in recording, her music captures the very essence of sublime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for fans of "El Rey"!
This CD is outstanding! Even those who burn thier own CD's would have a tough time putting together a greater collection of gutsy and classic Chente performances.
This disc includes perhaps his best-known and loved tune (Volver, Volver) and many other really superb songs ranging from very early to very recent in his career. In my view, great variety and choice of tunes from start to finish make this one of his best, better even than "Historia, Vol. 1" which is a very good CD as well. If you are a Vicente Fernandez fan but don't wish to go broke trying to purchase 50-plus CD's to get most of his greatest songs, one of your first Chente discs should be this one. "Historia De Un Idolo, Vol. II" easily earns five stars, even when compared to the rest of Chente's outstanding and abundant catalog of music. ... Read more

Jorge Negrete may have been Mexico's first cinematic ranchera hero, but perhaps because of his premature death in 1953, Pedro Infante surpassed him in the number of hit movies and recordings. And like that of Negrete, Infante's fantastic recording output has been constantly released in new compilations. This collection has most of his signature hits, including "Cien Años," a heartbreak tune about being abandoned, and "Paloma Querida," an old standard reinvented by Infante when he sings with cool detachment about love's inspiration. Infante was untrained, his approach was simple but emotive, yet he was talented enough to make unforgettable such other classics as Agustin Lara's "Mujer" and "Amor de Mis Amores," and the uplifting bolero "Amor a la Distancia." Infante died in a plane crash in 1957 but is immortalized in his movies and music. --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful singer, horrible recording
I love Pedro Infante. There is noone that can sing like him. That is why when I bought this CD I was truelly dissapointed because it was hard to hear his magnificiant voice. This recording appeared to sound like some took his original LP and put a sheet over the microphone, he sounded so muffled. I truelly love this artist, and becuase of that I realy hated how they rerecorded his songs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Songs by a Great Singer
What more can be said about such a great natural voice? The songs are great, but the recording quality is not so sharp on this CD. Needless to say, the songs were not recorded in the studios of today. The lyrics, and voice of Pedro Infante, are a joy to hear and one is tempted to sing along, or just sit and enjoy. (In case the reader is unfamiliar with Pedro Infante, the reader should know all songs are sung in Spanish)

5-0 out of 5 stars PEDRO INFANTE PURE FEELINGS, LOVE, HAPPINESS AND PEACE
I LOVE THE CD CALLED LAS ROMANTICAS DE PEDRO INFANTE, I HAVE NOT FOUND ANOTHER MUSIC FROM ANOTHER ACTOR THAT GIVES ME SO MUCH PLEASURE FEELINGS AND ALL DIFFEREND KINDS OF FEELINGS.THERE ARE NOT WORDS TO EXPLAIN HOW GREAT PEDRO INFANTE WAS AS A MUSICIAN AND AS AN ACTOR. HE IS A LEGENDARY AND HIS MUSIC WOULD BE ALIVE FOREVER AFTER. EVERYTIME I LISTEN TO A NEW SONG FROM PEDRO INFANTE, I EXPERIENCE A NEW FEELING OF PLEASURE AND EXCITEMENT INCOMPARABLE TO NO ONE. I LOOK FORWARD FOR SONGS THAT I HAVE NOT HEARD YET, FOR MY COLLECTION OF PEDRO INFANTE'S MUSIC. THAT IS MY PERSONAL OPINION, WHAT IS YOURS?

4-0 out of 5 stars Pain and elation, all at once
Pedro Infante was one of those rare artists, who can command respect and pity at the same time. his music, his songs are achingly beautiful, and yet to know he died so young is a heartbreaker. Ramiro bur is right on the money in his bio essay in the "Billboard Guide to Tejano and regional Mexican Music," on Billboard Books: "In the history of Mexican pop culture, there has never been an artist who captured the hearts and minds of Mexicans like the ranchera singer/film actor Pedro Infante." So true and yet, so sad. LaNancy ... Read more

Latin America has produced dozens of brilliant female singers and composers, including trail-blazers like Violetta Parra, Elis Regina, Soledad Bravo and Mecedes Sosa, to mention only a few. The present generation is also shaping up nicely. There are more women bandleaders than ever before, firmly in charge of their own talent, free to choose their material and back-up players without interference. As they so often do, Putumayo has supplied a short-list of emerging stars; the voices heard on this album are uniformly splendid and worthy of deeper exploration. But there are a few stand-outs: Brazilian Mônica Salmaso's creamy dark voice makes a strong impression, as does Chilean chanteuse Jacqueline Fuentes's plaintive, fado-like mezzo and Lhasa's limpidly nostalgic Mexican ranchera. Some may cavil at yet another gender-based compilation. But they should consider that male-dominated equivalents have existed since the dawn of the recorded era; they were just not labeled as such. --Christina Roden ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Mariachi
Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan are known as the best mariachi in the world, and it is definitely for a reason. The musicianship is tight, with all of the guitars, trumpets, and strings executed perfectly and beautifully. The beauty, quality, and precision of this recording is so well-executed that one could very well mistake the songs for being performed by an entire orquestra (as opposed to what is really an ancient folk ensemble)! That being said, one must understand a little bit about the pasodoble before really understanding the album. Pasodobles are Spanish marches that traveled to Latin America during the existence of the vast Spanish empire. It thrived in many different Spanish colonies, particularly those in which the old Spanish tradition of bullfighting was popular; however, both bullfighting and the pasodoble became extremely prolific in Mexico. Today, the pasodoble exists as both the traditional music for bullfights as well as a type of song used for ballroom dancing. The songform itself is very interesting; it seems to be a fusion of North African/Moorish melodies with western rhythms and instrumentation. It is particularly beautiful when played by a mariachi ensemble, of which it seems almost made for. In fact, most mariachi groups include at least a few pasodobles in their sets. The song "Lorenzo Garza" makes a perfect introduction to the album, functioning as a strong beckon to the listener. "Por Tapatias" boasts an impressive opening trumpet, and the famous "Juan Silveti" is perhaps the most exciting song on the album, with it's slightly brooding mood. Also, "La Machicha" is a nice addition as well, as it is perhaps one of the "cutest" pasodobles ever composed. Of course, this is all made possible by the capable hands of the world-renown Mariachi Vargas. For a good taste of old Mexico, this is an excellent album of beautiful and exciting music, and a wonderful addition to the many excellent recordings of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan. Classic mariachi in its entirety! ... Read more

A respected producer and songwriter in his own right, A.B. Quintanilla III will probably be best remembered as the producer, collaborator, and brother of Selena. In recent years, he's been working with the Texas Kumbia Kings, a young quintet packaged much like 'N Sync or Boys II Men, and the partnership has been successful enough to gain platinum album sales in the U.S. and Latin America. The music is a modern mix of tejano, cumbia, reggae, and hot-buttered R&B that is polished to the kind of bright sheen only a high-end producer can manage. The band's fourth album, 4, sticks with this formula while again featuring lyrics in both Spanish and English. For those not familiar with the band or its sound, the liberal use of accordion (cumbia's main instrument) may seem at odds with the poppy modern style and R&B vocal harmonies, but it actually provides enough grit to nicely balance the band's glossier modern moments. Guests include Ozomatli and El Gran Silencio. --Tad Hendrickson ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars El mejor disco de Kumbia Kings

5-0 out of 5 stars Kumbia Kings Rock the House
Selena's older brother, AB Quintanilla III, and his band, Los Kumbia Kings "rocks the house, y'all" on "Kumbia King 4". From soulful ballads to cumbia to Latino hip hop, they and their guests performers put together a really great album -- a sort of trip through the regional music of Mexico.

The album consists of 14 songs, although two are remix versions (of songs already on the CD):

1. No Tengo Dinero - (with Juan Gabriel/El Gran Silencio)
2. Amores Como El Tuyo
3. Insomnio
4. Llevame Al Cielo - (with Aleks Syntek)
5. Baby
6. Rompecabezas
7. Mi Gente - (with Ozomatli)
8. Contigo
9. Don't Wanna Try - (with Frankie J)
10. Under My Skin - (with Frankie J)
11. Please Don't Go Girl - (with Frankie J/Nino B)
12. Count On Me - (with Frankie J)
13. Amores Como El Tuyo - (Cumbia version)
14. No Tengo Dinero - (ATM remix, with Limi T21)

Although mostly in Spanish, the music and vocal interpretations crosses the language barrier. Superstar Mexican guests, such as Juan Gabriel, El Gran Silencio, Aleks Syntek and, another up-and-coming group, Ozomatli, show how much respect LK2 deserve. (Frankie J. and Nino B. are members of LK2). They are just that good.

My personal favorites are "Llevame al Cielo" (Take Me to the Sky) and "Mi Gente" (My People). On "Llevame al Cielo", Aleks Syntek emotes a sensitivity that reminds of George Michael in his best years, while Ozomatli just plain "raises the roof", Peter Tosh-style. The rest of the album varies in style, as LK2 show their versatility: "No Tengo Dinero" (I Don't Any Money) is a cross between cumbia (a regional Mexican dance, popular also in Central America) and hip hop, "Contigo" (With You) is a romantic ballad with flamenco guitar riffs, and on "Don't Wanna Try", Frankie J. out R. Kellys R. Kelly.

Now, you don't have to understand Spanish to understand the songs, although it helps. We listen to opera in other languages, and, for that matter, many groups in English without knowing what they're saying -- can anyone tell me what Nirvana was mumbling about ??? -- and that doesn't stop us from recognizing good music when we hear it. David Byrne of the Talking Heads was rumored to have written lyrics with the sole purpose of getting people to listen to the music he'd written; he wanted us to hear the melodies, regardless of what he was singing.

It's about time that people take the next logical step in their musical listening habits to cross borders and not let language be the barrier when seeking great music. Los Kumbia Kings, Ozomatli, and, little known (even in Latino music) Si*Se are great places to start.

Pick it up...you won't be sorry. You'll be sure to pick up your feet...and you might even pick up a little Spanish.

5-0 out of 5 stars una flecha en mi pecho
I have been listening to this CD for several weeks and have learned most of the lyrics. I have just in the last year figured out what I was missing not listening to our Mexican neighbor's great music. I bought this CD for "Mas que tu amigo" -la tema de 'Velo de Novia' con Jorge & Andrea, but then the other songs were great as well. They are witty lyrics and well written, & M.A. can really sing too. I don't like Tejano and I'm glad there is not much of that influence on his music. You can improve your Spanish too, because he sings slowly and clearly enough to pick up on pronunciations. Este 'CD' es muy bueno!

5-0 out of 5 stars Por Fin!
Mas Que Tu Amigo, #7, was used as one of the main musical themes for the novella "Velo de Novia" and has a very catchy beat and rhythm. I bought the CD for the one cut, but have been pleasantly surprised by the spirit and life of the entire CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars He has done it again with different rythms/beats
I am 24 years old and let me say that I have almost every CD of Marco Anotonio....I love him since his first songs back in the late 70's early 80's. I grew up listening to him at home. This man does have the heart, brains to compose some great songs. You really have to give him a lot of credit...there is very few people that can compose almost every single song on their CDs'. You can never go wrong with any of his CDs...I just don't listen to his music..I really pay attention to his writing, instruments that he uses and you can feel how much love and thought he puts into every song. There is always a song on all of his CDs' that you can identify yourself with. And of course you are always going to have your favorites and like one song more than the other ones. In this new CD....my favorite tracks are #1, 4, 8, 9, and 10. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy his other ones. Since he came out solo in 1996, I thought I was going to be dissapointed because I was thinking he was not going to be the same without the "Bukis." But he has done it once again...and I love it!! It's not that he is better...but it's just different and it's still great. This is his 5th CD as a solo artist and I truly enjoy and love them all. His music is so relaxing, and when you're in love...it's just wondeful to listen to. Since it all comes from his heart, that is why we feel it in our heart also. You just can't scan through it or "just listen". You really have to pay attention, listen to where he is coming from in every song and listen to the lyrics and that is when you'll appreciate his music. Good job Marco Antonio Solis...
... LIke they say "Music doesn't have boundaries"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great cd from 'El Buki Mayor'
If you are looking for something 'musically new' you will find almost naught. Marco Antonio Solis is a 'song' composer not a mere music composer. Marco Antonio Solis new cd is a step back from the orchestral arrangements which he was collaborating with Silvetti; instead he uses mariachi as his second orchestral choice- a panoply to his lyrics. The latter is something he has done before. The only diference 'musically' is an unusual interesting 'brass sound' on some arrangements here and there and the clear tumbao rhythm-he has done caribbean rhythms but not as 'explicit' as in this cd. Solis is more of a composer so his song compositions are still remarkable and convey the strong emotions and romanticism he is known for. The first song is the single that premiered the cd. The second song, Con la Vida Comprada, is the usual ranchera. The third song, El Milagrito, is a mellow banda-norteña song-remember that banda song in the Buki album 'Por Amor a Mi Pueblo'? well, Milagrito, is arranged that way. The latter is a nice insouciant composition. The fourth song is a ballad-ranchera. Ranchera because it uses a mariachi. Que te Quieran Mas que Yo is a love ballad where the author wishes on his love the best: including that she is loved more than what he has done. The fifth song, El Diablito, starts out with an explicit guagancó until a nice a-la Buki keyboard arrangement transforms it very Buki and hence very Mexican. The song is arranged with the famous 3-2 Cuban clave. Furthermore, the song has also that brass sound aforementioned that sounds nice. Diablito is sang in a Juan Luis Guerra style. After the guagancó intro it goes into a mambo that reminds you of the Pedro Fernandez re-make of 'Yo no Fui'-it actually uses that little happy laugh Pedro has throughout.
The sixth song is the regular ranchera : Ni alla donde te Fuiste. The latter has the traditional ranchera-harmonica intro. In the middle, the back up band artist, who speaks in the middle of the song, sounds very remeniscent to Vicente Fernandez' 'Volver, Volver'. The seventh song is a nice andean cumbia.- one of my favorites. I wish the rythm was exploited a bit more. The latter is called Mas que tu Amigo. The eight song, Te me Vas, is also ranchera-like . The ninth song is a bolero-ranchera-ballad. It starts out with a requinto that is also heard throughout the song. I say it is a ranchera because it uses mariachi. It is a ballad because it is not a ranchera rythm and the voice leans towars a ballad. Bolero because of the requinto heard through out. Finally the last song: Las Noches las Hago Dias. The latter is a norteña ranchera. The mariachi singers provide the backing vocals.
This cd is another showcase of 'su majestad'(or Buki Mayor or Marco Antonio Solis) song composition at its best. I still would like him to get back with the Bukis. Why? because his compositions would transcend to another dimension. After all, the saying goes that two heads are better than one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cd
Tu Amor O Tu Desprecio is the 3rd cd I have bought from Mr. Solis. The guy makes nice cds. Out of the 3 cds I got I have not been dissapointed at all. All 3 I like the whole thing. I did not know Marco Antonio Solis untill 1999. In fact I had never seen what he looked like befor 1999. His new cd is a more mexcian style cd which fits him perfectly because hes mexcian. I am not from mexico. I am from New York. There were no reviews on his new cd and I was worrid that it would be a bad cd because he just did a cd 2 years ago. When I heard the wole cd I was releved. It very nice. Over all its a cd wroth getting for yourself or that special person you love like your wife. Nice cd!!!! 5 stars. ... Read more
