5-0 out of 5 stars Originals you may have heard elsewhere
What do such diverse entertainers as Placido Domingo, Chavela Vargas, Pedro Infante, Luis Miguel, Julio Iglesias, Helmutt Lotti, Rocio Banquells, Javier Solis, Nat King Cole, Rocio Durcal ,Lucho Gatica, Jorge Negrete, Lola Beltran, Caetano Veloso and countless trios and mariachi groups have in common? They have all recorded Augustin Lara compositions. Known as el "El Flaco de Oro," Agustin Lara is one of the Mexico's most prolific composers with some 600 compostions to his credit!! If you listen to Latin music, especially boleros, you have probably heard a Lara composition. Some of his more famous and interpreted songs are "Amor de Mis Amores," "Solamente Una Vez," "Veracruz," "Granada," Noche de Ronda," " Farolito," "Aventura," "Mujer," "La Cumbancha," "Pobre De Mi," and his ode to one of his four wives, old time film actress and goddess, Maria (La Dona) Felix , entitled "Maria Bonita." All of the mentioned songs are featured here and taken from the original LP recordings by Lara made between 1954 and 1961. Besides being a composer he was an acomplished pianist(worked in a bordelo at age 13, listen to the biographic "Imposible")) and a singer. This double disc features the voice and piano of Lara as he originally intended the songs to sound l . A wise person once told me the original composers know best how a song should sound:). There are a variety of styles by Lara but mostly tango, pasodoble and bolero music is featured. Although the music is old it still maintains a cosmopolitan flair that is classic. The piano work of Lara is prominent throughout although the disc and also features a conjunto he recorded with. Most of the songs have a melancholy feel and if you look at the picture of Lara, with his ever present cigarette dangling from his lip, it pretty much sums up the feeling. It is odd but the melancholy feeling is not really sad but more nostalgic, a different time, a different place; it's a colorful black and white world with shades of grey as seen through the smoke filled room of Lara's vision. Lara's voice is not great but somehow it sounds perfect for these songs of love and love lost. He literally sounds like the everyman pianist who spends his life laboring unknown in small, smoky, skanky clubs with the oversized brandy snifter stuffed with tips resting on the piano. In spite of less than quality voice these recordings are marvelous because they feature the original recordings of songs you may heard somewhere with arrangements as they were intended to sound. In the traditional sense of a good voice Lara falls short but the emotion permeates making the music sound good. "El Flaco de Oro," Agustin Lara was an international star, has been honored in Granada,Spain and Veracruz, Mexico with a bronze statues and is deserving of a "complete" box set but for now this is about as good as it gets. Featuring 40 recordings, this collection of Lara music is a real bargain. RCA has a series of "Mejor de lo Mejor" discs where they showcase old artists from their archives and this is definitely one of their best of the best. The disc is no frills, no information other than the obligatory musical credit; to RCA's credit they at least say which year and LP the music came from. The sound quality is very good and each disc has a cool look like a phonograph record. If you like old time Mexican music featuring a fantastic composer than add this bargain double disc to your collection; it's a classic collection of songs by a musical poet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What could be hotter?
This is the hottest, sexiest, most golden of the gold. Vargas: honey sweet, ripping, belting, trembling, hissing between gritted teeth, growling like a savage wolf - while her fingers from across a schizophrenic yet logical abyss play in melodious counterpoint to the emotional rollercoaster of her voice.

There are places in "Macorina" where I absolutely stop breathing. Look up the words! It is also well worth reading about the real Macorina.

I ripped this CD from a friend, but it is so incredibly good, I am buying it as a mark of respect for the incomparable, beautiful Chavela Vargas. I can't wait to hear more.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good way to know her
If you are interested in knowing latinamerican music,a good way to start is Chavela Vargas. She sings the most beautiful latin songs with the best performance of them all. This collection shows a good sample of her music: her traditional "Macorina", "Volver, volver" and "Mi segundo amor", different tunes and styles of music, which everyone interested in music should include on the list. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Chente is the best
His voice is as powerful and beautiful as ever. His voice is ageless. this recording has the best selection of corridos, some of them he recorded before. I really enjoyed them and this is a must for any Vicente Fernandez fan or anyone who loves corridos. There is not many out there with a voice like him and if you have the chance to see him live, it's really worth it. His concerts are almost 3 hours and he sings continuously. His voice is the same live, beautiful and powerful. Chente is the best !

Cafe Tacuba come straight out of Mexico City with a spicy blend of rocken Espanol, with Jamaican ska/reggae and African-American hip-hop sonicseasonings. And unlike their counterparts, they've managed to keep thecritics, record companies, and their fans happy. This CD, whichtranslates as Four Ways, is their first full release since1999. Lead guitarist/vocalist Elfego Buendía, keyboardist Emmanuel DelReal, bassist Enrique Rangel and guitarist Joselo Rangel--along withR.E.M. and Beck percussionists Victor Indrizio and Joey Waronker--delivera more raw, stripped-down sound compared to their critically acclaimedrecordings Re andAvalancha de Éxitos. Their long-time producerGustavo Santaolalla is at the helm, but on this go- 'round, the quartetalso works with producers Dave Fridmann and Andrew Weiss, who both mannedthe boards for the bands, Ween, Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev.From thehigh-powered video/single"Eo (el sonidero)" and "¿Qué pasará?" withspecial guest vocalistRubén Albarrán (a.k.a. Elfego Buendía), to thephilosophical"Mediodía," these tracks show that Cafe Tacuba is moving awayfrom their alternative phase into a mature, Steely Dan typeof mainstreamsound.--Eugene Holley, Jr. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Four Roads Lead In 1 Direction: Forward
I started listening to Cafe Tacvba because they did a cover in Avalancha of Leo Dan's "Como Te Extraño", thinking it was their best song. I cannot explain how amazed I was when I listened to their original stuff, especially when Reves/Yosoy came out, which is probably the second greatest Rock En Español CD.

I say second, because Cuatro Caminos is by far the best CD ever created in Spanish Rock. Every song is an entity in itself, but when combined to create the album, the result is magnificent. The multiple state of minds reached through listening is astonishing. As an example, you begin with deep introspection with Cero y Uno, continue with silliness in Eo, and proceed with a feeling of loneliness in Mediodia(my favorite song in this album). The overall rating of this CD is unfortunate, since someone who does not know anything about Cafe Tacuba made the mistake of reviewing this CD. This is not a step back, this album only proves that with enough imagination and skill, Rock En Español can reach a uniqueness all its own, one that does not blatantly try to emulate the Rock that is North of the Border. You do not need to buy this CD based on what I say, but if you don't, there is one more treasure that I have found over you.

5-0 out of 5 stars UNA OBRA DE ARTE

Could someone please tell what the label "limited edition" stands for (special packaging, extra tracks....)
thank you very much!

Alguien sería tan amable de decirme en qué consiste la "edición limitada" (packaging especial, bonus tracks, etc.)
Muchas gracias.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is a classic!!!
It is such a nice thing that even though there's a lot of good music out there(and of course a lot of crap) you can still find albums like CUATRO CAMINOS. cafe tacuba is at its best. RE was their way to show off that there's nothing they can't do when it comes to music, then REVES/YO SOY came to confirm they were the best rock band in the spanish speaking world but with CUATRO CAMINOS they are just proving they are one of the world's best rock bands and nobody that listens to this album could disagree with that. even though there's a lot of english speaking people who will listen and enjoy it it's still a shame that the majority of the world will never know about it cause it's not in english. so i guess that radiohead has a new competitor when it comes to holding the best band in the world title.

5-0 out of 5 stars These guys know how to rock! Period!
Rock en Español-megaproducer Gustavo Santaolalla teamed up here once more with the Cafe Tacuba to deliver arguably the band's best work ever. For those who know them and follow the genre this might sound as a tough call (considering their history of extraordinary music), but they outdid themselves, not just by a sheer result of evolution (call them the Latinamerican Flaming Lips, if you may) and (once again) their impeccable production, but also due to the addition of drums to their lineup with the guestwork of Victor Indrizzio and Joey Waronker. Listen up closely, and you will realize this is another great Cafe Tacuba album, but taken to the next level thanks to the life that a live drum set (as opposed to a drum machine) can breath on a piece of music!

For anyone who feared the "Tacubos" were getting softer in any way, the power that they gain thanks to the live percussion complements the band's already established sound, with the unmisteakably jumpy and highly adaptive voice of Elfego Buendia, the keyboards of Emmanuel del Real, the guitars of Joselo Rangel and the bass of Quique Rangel. The result: 14 solid songs that overdeliver one after the other. If you ask me, this is a classic right out of the gate. A longtime keeper for Rock en Español fans and serious music collectors alike. ... Read more

i am a huge luis miguel fan and will be forever.. i go to every concert he has in my corner of the world.... But! i was a little disappointed in this cd & dvd. i was really hoping for NEW music from him. the dvd which contains his videos that have been seen by many people in the spanish speaking community and on spanish MTV.... i am hoping that his NEXT cd whenever that is will contain all NEW material..... BUT I STILL LOVE HIM TO DEATH!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Four Stars for bonus track and DVD, ONLY...
First of all, good compilation. I am not able to detract very much from this production for the sheer power of the chosen play list, the bonus track, "Hasta Que Vuelvas," and of course the DVD. The list of videos is too short, but everyone will be glad to have had them included in this issue. We expect, as is certainly the case with any "Best of" compilation, that this will be a kind of leave taking from the ROMANCE portion of Luis Miguel's opus. We, however, sincerely hope that it is not.

The collection presented here is very good. Of course, there is the problem of the previous and similar work, TODOS LOS ROMANCES, and the endless faraggo of questions it necessarily engenders to now have both it, and this particular collection, in circulation merely two years apart with only the exception of a few "new" songs.

This reviewer and ardent admirer of Luis Miguel's hopes against all that is contrary and cinical about the recording industry that MIS BOLEROS FAVORITOS was submitted for the further erudition of only his serious fans who also happen to be collectors of his music.

However, WEA International and Warner Musica Latina's thinly veiled attempt to keep the ROMANCE franchise alive is very frustrating. To be sure, from a purely commercial perspective, Luis Miguel, and all that has been produced from the ROMANCE series, has brought ENORMOUS wealth and longevity to the Latin division of the company; and one can only speculate what this artist and his beloved ROMANCE projects have done world-wide for the Latin Music genre on the whole. But, that is all. Once again, the almighty dollar rules over CREATIVITY and ART and INDIVIDUALISM. The truly lamentable thing is that Luis Miguel is most assuredly bound by contract with this corporation, and has probably been suffocating under the weight and pressure of the money requirement, and the growing despondency at not being able to record all that he wishes. Indeed, in his much-anticipated press conference, which convened in Madrid before the release, he openly alludes to the fact that this was wholly a "company decision"--leading us to believe that this compilation was neither his idea, nor his desire at this time. Nonetheless, either you are for your ART, or for your MONEY; and these two masters demand it ALL from an artist. You will serve one and hate the other, but you CANNOT serve them BOTH--not effectually, nor convincingly.

What makes any fan of Luis Miguel's the infinite ... in all of this is that he or she will never know to what degree, nor just how intimately important Luis Miguel's work is to him personally. Notice that from any of the recordings dating from 1988, none of the releases contain liner notes: the sacred space within the album jacket that is permitted an artist, where he can dedicate his work, thank all those around him, offer some of his personal thoughts; and in general, make the purchaser (the most IMPORTANT PERSON in the equation of "Artist + Admirer") feel that the work and final product was a journey embarked upon solely for the purchaser's pleasure and continued admiration. One always feels what an unfathomable abyss it is not to see one single, solitary word Luis Miguel feels, says, or thinks about his current work when one buys one of his CD's. He has never communicated that. We are never invited to peer into what a journey of evolution and discovery making an album is for him. No. Instead, we are left to wonder how much does he really respect his audience, how much of that shyness of his is really an escape from his adoring public (manufactured by him or the corporation that handles his material), and whether or not taking a simple fan's patronage of his music and industry into account is a concept that ever enters his own mind. He pays much lip service to that, but never issues his fans a Valentine to go with it.

We are, in this plastic and throw-away world, continually looking for a glimpse of the SINCERE, of the GENUINE, of PROPRIETY, and certainly, a look into an artist's true GRACIOUSNESS and, most of all, GRATITUDE toward his audience. For whatever reason we are left to ponder about our beloved Luis Miguel, we take what little we are given about this artist, extrapolate, that, beneath those elegant and highly polished veneers of his, there truly exists an immense talent who is a veritable GENTLEMAN, and that somehow, a bit of his HUMANITY still exists.

I raise my glass to Luis Miguel, if only for the immense scope of talent I have been so fortunate to witness, both from his live performances, and from every time any of his albums are delivering his indelible voice to the pleasure of heart.

Sir, may you continually gather success unto yourself as abundantly and as limitlessly as your fans love and admire you. May you obtain, however fleeting, a tinge of happiness and the satisfaction of your self-respect.

And may you never forget the extent of your welcome into our lives, that you possess it only for the while when you have exalted us above your own existence and power, and have made us the joy or your art-making.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent! Another masterpiece from THE KING!
Great album! Beautiful song selection!

The DVD's presentation could have been more sophisticated, a bit too simple for my taste, but it brings with it seven elegant music videos that put you inside the world of Luis Miguel.

THE KING!

1-0 out of 5 stars AWFULL CD, Boring.
The Word evolution does not exixt in the Luis Miguel dictionary this album is boring and sound the same like all his music.

He needs to learn about Ricky Martin that always surprise us with a good album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD; disappointing DVD
5 stars for the CD; 5 stars for being able to WATCH the great Mr Miguel on screen. However, one wonders why the audio on the DVD is so dreadful (except the last track). There is so much hissing sound that makes listening a bit difficult. Certainly for the track "Por Debajo De La Mesa" a better version has previously been released (on the Romances DVD Audio). Nevertheless, 5 stars for this CD/DVD, like for anything else he has done in the past 10 years. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sampling of greats from"El Rey"!
This is another "must have" Chente CD with a bunch of his truly classic songs. Like one of the other reviewers said, Vicente Fernandez can be compared to Frank Sinatra in both his mastery and popularity in his chosen form of music. But even Frank did'nt have pipes like these! "El Rey" is in a class of his own.
Some of the best tunes here include the beautiful "Lastima Que Seas Ajena" and the powerfully mournful "Que De Raro Tiene". Still, the tops on this CD and one of his best ever is the heart-wrenching "Mi Viejo". It would take a rather heartless soul to not be moved by this song. It's that good.
As good as this collection is, I give it four stars only because overall, I like the song selection on "Historia, Vol. 2" a little better. This is, however, just my personal taste and most Chente fans will be very happy with either one of these discs. In fact, these two CD's would give a new Chente fan an excellent introduction to his music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
This album is terrific. All of the songs take me back to the days of the old Mexican west, and Vincente seems to be living his songs as he sings them. I play this cd over and over, I can't get enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars ¡Purito Mejicano!

5-0 out of 5 stars EL MEJOR CANTANTE
ESTE CD ES MUY BUENO Y SE LOS RECOMIENDO A TODOS LAS CANCIONES SON MUY BUENAS. YO CREO QUE CHENTE ES EL MEJOR CANTANTE DE TODOS. BUENO COMPREN ESTE CD Y TODOS LOS DEMAS.

Words can not describe how awesome this man's voice is.. his lyrics, his music, his fantastic voice all touch your heart like no other music can! Trust me! I listen to a lot of music and this CD has some of the best that has ever been made! VIVA CHENTE Y SU MUSICA!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars When you run out of Greatest Hits albums to release......
So this is what Selena's father resorts to when he doesn't want to release the 10th greatest hits album of the same rehashed songs? I guess anything for a quick buck. Anyone who saw this concert on tv knows how tragic this event was...and how fake! I felt like I was watching a 2-hour long infomercial. The only artist who seemed to even seem half sincere was India. God bless her and that beautiful voice. She was also one of the few to do any justice to Selena's timeless classics. I am sure Selena's father already has another 5 greatest hits compilations lined up in case this tribute album flops, which I hope it does. I am all for worthwhile new Selena releases with remastered/remixed/unreleased material, but otherwise I say let Selena rest in peace and stop cashing in on her legacy.

1-0 out of 5 stars You make me sick
Abraham, you're a sick man. Apart from this event being a total mockery of what Selena stood for, to release this CD is as comparable of a tribute to Selena as it would be to dance on her grave. I wonder how you sleep at night.

If this were a real tribute to Selena, you would have included people who KNEW Selena and would truly convey an honest perspective of what it feels to lose Selena. Instead we got alot of people who prior to her death did not even know of Selena's existence! So are we lead to believe that these people all seriously felt grief in their hearts when they falsely said "we miss you Selena!" at the concert?. Yes..I can see it now..Thalia and Aleks Syntek really felt it...right. Where were you in 1993?

You should be ashamed of yourself. And to all who support this trash, please stop feeding evil. His money isn't going to any charity bigger than his own pocket. You know, toupé's don't buy themselves...Abraham has his Golden Goose with her golden eggs with Selena.

5-0 out of 5 stars A moving tribute!
I have not stopped listening to this CD since I bought it. I know that some will complain about the tracks that are missing: Bobby Pulido, Olga Tanon, and Paulina... But the tracks that are here are well worth the price. I love Alejandra's version of "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" and Thalia's "Amor Prohibido." Ana Gabriel's "Tu Solo Tu" alone would be worth the price of the cd as well. India's "No Debes Jugar" salsa romp is definitely another standout. But the cake goes to Alicia Villareal's "Si Una Vez," she knocks this one out of the ballpark. Alicia's delivery and feeling totally sell the song. The only complaint I do have is that the duet between Selena and her brother "Baila Esta Kumbia" can only be found on his CD "Duetos." That was all about money making and selling his own record. That track belonged here. (By the way, "Duetos" by the Kumbia Kings does contain "I Could Fall In Love" in a new cumbia version.... totally worth buying too. But all in all a great, moving, emotional tribute to the great Selena!!!!

In less than a decade, Alejandro Fernández has emerged as one of Mexico's leading young performers by effortlessly balancing the solid ranchera sounds of his father Vicente Fernández with the slick balladry of contemporaries like Enrique Iglesias. On Entre Tus Brazos, however, Fernández sticks a bit too close to the formula of his past successes. His deep, expressive voice glides nicely around the sensual rhythms of "Háblame" and "Quiéreme," but there's a sense of slick detachment that courses throughout most of the tracks, all of which were produced by Emilio Estefan, Jr. Every song is awash in sound-alike string arrangements and tortured-love lyrics. The tempo picks up here and there, but this glossy collection is likely to induce more sleep than swoons. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A portrait of passion and sensuality, Latin style!!!!
I remember being introduced to Alejandro which was about the same time I was introduced to Luis Miguel. "Me Estoy Enamorando" and I was impressed with his delievery of the title track and his collaboration with Gloria Estefan on "En El Jardin". But "Entre Tus Brazos" is another exciting vocal outing for Alejandro. His interpretation and performance of the compositons on this cd reminds me of Steve Perry of Journey. Steve Perry can sing and so can Alejandro. The lush musical arrangements and Alejandro voice compliment each other nicely. I love spanish guitar and it is prominent in all of the compositions. But the voice swoons and dips with ease and appears effortless. I grew up on soul/r&b and some rock (a la' Tina) but always loved latin music even before it became the in thing. Alejandro will be around for a while. If you do not have this cd you should get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great production!
Once thing is certain, and that is that Alejandro Fernandez has to be the most talented male singer out there. Every song he sings is smooth and very inspiring. And when you add the a great Producer such as Emilio Estefan Jr. and a great Composer/Writer as is Kike Santander, nothing but excellence is the result. That was the case of "Me Estoy Enamorando", as is now for "Entre Tus Brazos". The CD is very well-rounded. If you want a little rythm to groove to, you have "Quiereme" and "Nunca Me Arrepiento". If you want romatic ballads with great composition you have, "Hablame", "Si Te Vas", "Cada Manana", "Te Llevo Guardada" and "Ensename". Anybody who loves inspirational lyrics, touching composition, soothing harmony, and vocal interpretation, should most definitely get this CD. It's worth the time you listen to it, and then some.

5-0 out of 5 stars SWOON.....THUD!!!!!!!
First Off Alejandro Fernandez Has The Most Beautifully Stunning Male Voice Ever Created!!!! As For This Cd, Every Song Is Breathtaking & Wonderfully Arranged & Produced. The Title Song Is Simply Beyond Words And I Will Not Try To Explain It's Beauty, I Will Just Say I Get Chills Everytime I Hear It!!! 5-0 out of 5 stars Needs a 2nd review
I have already reviewed this wonderful album, but since then I have been very dismayed and perplexed by the tepid reviews Entre Tus Brazos has gotten from the offical media, (like here at Amazon). I can only assume reviews have only time to listen to a CD once. Too bad, because it may take several listens to really appreciate this superb album. This is usually the case with very good music, whateaver the genre.

I can only urge all Latin music fans to buy this album, as it is one of the most moving, beautiful and polished male vocal albums I have ever heard, and is one I hold very close to my heart. Alejandro's voice is deeply emotive and very masculine. The arrangements are subtle and beautiful, the songs memorable and romantic, but never in a overly sentimental or manipulative way. This is very sophisticated music.

In fact, I am very hard to please when it comes to just about everything and very critical. There is far more I don't like than what I do like. But this album is absolutely wonderful: ignore the critics!

Also, if you are not a fan of mariachi music, this and Me Estoy Enamerando are Fernandez two forays into more mainstream music, and therefore you should be dissuaded.

5-0 out of 5 stars simplemente bello
After buying Loco, I decided to go for some of his newer pop stuff. With his beautiful voice and charming appearance. (LOL) I was not disappointed. This cd is really beautiful. I love all the songs. The songs are passionate, beautiful, and romantic. 2 thumbs up! ... Read more

Even in the northern states, Mexican music is easy to find on American radio, but airplay almost exclusively consists of the Tex-Mex norteño style. In contrast, there's barely an accordion in earshot on this sparkling collection of traditionally rooted songs. Los Bravos del Norte de Ramon Ayala weigh in with the bouncy ranchera "Andan Dicendo," but on all other fronts guitar trills rather than squeezebox sighs propel the music. With violin swoops and falsetto vocals, La Calaca unleash the galloping son huasteco/ranchera "Rogaciano." The same ensemble graces the gusto "El Tecolote" with less ferocity but equivalent momentum. Los Lobos dip way into their past with a 1977 version of the son jarocho sped up into a self-proclaimed son loco on "Flor de Huevo," complete with dizzying fretwork and a flailing rhythm. The delicate instrumental son istemeno wedding song "Mediu Xhiga" from Dueto de los Hermanos Rios brings exquisitely ornamented requinto guitar from Mexico's Pacific Coast. Rounding out the set is a slice of Latin cabaret complete with braying clarinets and a gritty vocal takeoff on, of all things, a traditional Mexican Christmas carol via Lhasa de Sela's "Los Peces." --Bob Tarte ... 5-0 out of 5 stars highly recommend
i am a chicana that has only recently started to listen to latin music and get into all things my culture. i bought this cd after i bought the latin groove cd this like all other putumayo cd's is amazing. again it is the trademark of putumayo to blend traditional and modern which i love. this cd was a breath of fresh air because it doesnt only play the norteno everyone is so used to. it showcases other types of mexican music. this cd is braethtaking i absoloutely love it along with putumayos latin groove and cuba cd's. there is also a kicking guacamole recipe in the mexico cd. it also shows some nahua (azteca)words and their translations. again i highly recommend this cd! putumayo comes out with some awesome releases!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD!
This CD is really excellent. I have been to Mexico 3 times and this CD brings me right back. It makes me smile and makes me want to get on a plane and go right back! A really great collection of Mexican music - I have several Putumayo CDs and this is one of the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Variety and Mexican folklore
One of the best things I like about this CD is that it is not filled with Mariachi or norteno beats but equally balanced to reflect what Mexico really is; a very culturally Indo-Hispanic country. Buy this CD and hear the Mexico that we often times ignore.

5-0 out of 5 stars mexican music
This is really nice music, played beautifully. I'm trying to learn to play several of the songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars very mexican and a good mix!
Before I went to mexico, i was trusting this as a good mix of mexican traditional music. After goin to mexico and listening to this while i was there, i was not fooled. This is a wondeful selection of mexico music. I love just about every song. It reminds me of Mexico and the wonderful time i had there! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS SHOULD BE YOUR FIRST PEDRO INFANTE CD
If you are fond of listening to boleros and want to buy a cd this is the FIRST cd you should get. This cd is a classic. I bought this on the Peerless label a while back so it was kind of expensive because it was imported. but now WEA did some deal with Peerless(to my surprise because Peerless was reluctant to accede to any foreign company) and WEA re-released his cd's but at a cheaper price(great!). DO NOT BUY PEDRO INFANTE ON ORFEON. ONLY on Peerless WEA. Peerless did a good job in safeguarding Pedro Infante's classic music. I am not from that era( I was born in the seventies) but I must say his voice I have not seen a match yet. This cd is a must since it contains his most known songs like Amorcito Corazon. ... It's impossible to keep a great band--namely the Kumbia Kings--down. A.B. Quintanilla III's bilingual outfit has undergone major line-up changes (including the addition of Chris Perez as a guitarist) and still struggles with an often-distracting, ghetto-fabulous image. But Fuego, the Kings' fourth proper studio album, is a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience, proffering an enticing recipe of cumbia, hip-hop and R&B rhythms. As is now custom, the Kings include a couple of topsy-turvy remakes, including Musical Youth's 1983 smash, "Pass the Dutchie," and "Ella Sabe," a psychedelic rendition of Steely Dan's "Do It Again." There's also a clever sampling of the classic club ditty "The Roof is On Fire" during the title track. High-profile guests, including Noel from Sin Bandera and teen singer Belinda, also add to the glitter. But it's ultimately the Kings' innovative sound that remains front-and-center on standout tracks "Viento" and "Ay Amor."--Joey Guerra ... Read more

California's Los Lobos are the reigning kings of Tex-Mex/Rock Espanol. Butthis debut CD by the San Angelo, Texas band Los Lonely Boys might herald achanging of the guard. This is truly a band of brothers, led byguitarist/vocalist Henry Garza and his younger, bass-and-drum-playingsiblings Jojo and Ringo (no kidding). Like a lot of groups, they had to move away to achieve fame--in their case, to Nashville. But afterthe release of their EP, Willie Nelson heard them, put them on tour as his opening act, and recorded them at his studio--and the rest may behistory. Stylistically, the Garza brothers' bilingual songs about love andlife combine Stevie Ray Vaughan blues, Santana-style guitar licks and R&B.Nelson helps out on guitar, with Reese Wynans on keyboards.Produced byKeb Mo andB.B. Kingproducer John Porter, the music is honest, driving, and down home, especially on the organ-filled uptempo tracks "Senorita"and"Tell My Why." The stinging guitar solo on the Afro-anthemic "Onda" recallsthe '70s grooves Santana built his chops on, while "The Answer" and "Morethan Love" are raw power ballads that show off this group's dynamism anddiversity. --Eugene Holley, Jr. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY "HEAVEN"
I first saw the Garza brothers on VH1. I liked their debut single, HEAVEN, from the very first moment I heard it...very rare. Usually, you have to have something pounded in your head a good 10 times. Anyway, on the strength of the single, I bought the album. I was leary b/c most albums only have MAYBE 2 good songs on it. Not so with this. I have had this cd in player since I bought it. I can't take it out--each song is a hit! My family heard the cd and they each went out to get their own copy. This is music for all ages--it's real and it's honest. In this day and age of 1 hit wonders and talentless gimmicks, LOS LONELY BOYS are truly refreshing. They play with so much feeling and their is a rawness to it all that is infectious. I recently had a chance to see them play live. BEST SHOW EVER! Henry is defo a guitar virtuoso, on his way to join the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Carlos Santana. Ringo on drums is so powerful...u can just feel the beats in your heart. But the one who stole the show was Jojo, the bass player...he just had an energy that radiated on stage. All three are very talented and worth checking out live. As for the CD, my personal favorites are well...they're all my fav! If you are only buying one CD this summer, it's gotta be LOS LONELY BOYS!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Viva Los Lonely Boys!!!!!!!!!
In a word: excellent! This is one of those albums that you put in your cd player or computer (whatever the case may be) and just let it play straight through. No filler on this cd...just great music from beginning to end. Tex Mex, Texas Blues and Santanta all mixed together with great vocal melodies. I swear the guitar player is channeling Stevie Ray Vaughan's ghost. Not to say he is ripping off SVR just paying very tasteful tribute to him. Solid musicianship with songs that make you tap your foot. I dare you not to have "Heaven", "Crazy Dream" or "Real Emotions" stuck in your head after spinning this disc. Definitely going to wind up in my Top 5 for 2003! Highly recommended for listening while driving the car! Also check out the bonus CDRom footage which shows them playing live...can't wait to see it in the flesh myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Good Music
I had lost hope. A music lover, I bought on average one new album every week, wishing that it will be the One.

A decade passed. Then Los Lonely Boys came along. WOW...

I am hooked, my wife is hooked, my kids too.

Thank you LLB.

They are the best thing that happened to rock n'roll since...I can't even remember.

I just hope that they will keep producing good music.

Keep bringing us joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smoking Hot!!!
I haven't heard music this good for a while. Every single track on this CD is awesome, which is rare for new bands these days. Vocals, guitar, bass, and percussions are solid, these guys can really play, unlike most of todays bands. I've travelled 5 straight hours listening to just this one CD and never got tired of it. In fact I'm listening to it right at this moment. Thinking of buying CD's, put this on your list. Can't wait till the next album comes out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Los Lonely Boys - The Real Deal
I just got back from seeing los lonely boys live for the first time (first, because I will definitely see them at every possble opportunity in the future.) Despite being relatively new and having little material to their catalogue, they put on quite an impressive show. MASSIVE jamming, I haven't seen amazing guitar like that since I saw the Crossroads Guitar Festival a few weeks ago, but that's another story. First of all, these guys are amazing, one day I'll be saying "yeah I saw the Los Lonely Boys for free in Dallas before they ever made it big." The first power trio was Cream, and these guys do great honor to the power trio tradition (underscore POWER!) The drums and bass are very good, but I am enthralled by the guitar capability of Henry Garza, this guy truly shreds the guitar with amazing capability. He was doing wah wah like I've only heard on Clapton albums and much more! At one point the bassist and lead guitarist were playing their instruments with one hand and changing chords by dropping or pulling the guitar up/down to change notes. They were showing off their musicianship and it was great. Henry even brought out a harmonica and was showing some mad skills. I bought the CD after seeing someone on audioscrobbler who liked the Jayhawks play their music alot so I checked them out at the music store and really enjoyed their CD and the single heaven. Now that I have seen them live, and heard Onda live with ~2 min. guitar solo intro to the song, I know that these guys will be around for a long time. One thing that always distinguished the really greats- Clapton, Santana, SRV for example- was the ability to create amazing catchy riffs and powerful songs that caught people's attention and drew them to the rest of their blues/rock output. "Heaven" is like that, it has an amazing riff that will draw people to an amazing musical talent. Quite refreshing! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect album
This is Selena's perfect album, every song is a gem! There is variety and every song is stuck in your head. I cant choose a favourite but I do love 'ya no' particuarly. This is the essential Selena album. Make sure not to pass up 'Entre a mi mundo' also!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite singer
I really like the songs that Selena sings. The thing I like about it is that she sings English and Spanish. I also like her voice and the way that her brothers and sister play the instruments. I think that it really nice that mostly the whole family is in it. I like Selena's songs more than anyother C.D. I wish she didn't die but she did. Even though she's dead, I still listen to hre songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMOR PROHIBIDO: THE ALBUM ALL SELENA FANS MUST OWN
Although Selena was a big celebrity before the 1994 release of this album, "Amor Prohibido" is one of her best known, and really shot this Tejano Queen into the limelight. Some songs featured on this album are "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", "No Me Queda Mas" and the title track, now known as Selena and tejano classics. This album pushed the Tejano boundaries and is one of the most influential albums of its time. With a mix of rock, pop, cumbia, mariachi and with Selena's stunning vocals it is a must-have.

As for the Remastered Tracks and Bonus Tracks, there is little to be said. There really wasn't much on this album to remaster, as it's original sound was up to date when it was recorded unlike her earlier recordings where the difference is completely noticeable. On some songs, yes you can hear it, but on most...no. The videos on this album are a nice added touch, but if you own the "All My Hits Video Collection", or the "Ones" DVD, this is again just re-packaged material. The Bonus Track, "Dondequiera Que Estes" is a beautiful song and one of her first big hits, and it's nice to have it in its original version on a Selena album (if you own Dreaming of You- the album, you have the Spanglish version titled Wherever You Are), unless of course you already own the "Ones" collection with the original version already on it. The Spoken liner notes are actually very interesting on this record, the band member's memories are much more vivid and I believe they talk more about the experience in the making of this record. I, myself, only bought this remastered album because my old one had worn out, and I felt it was time for a new one. So, if you already own the first original release of "Amor Prohibido", you have to ask yourself a couple of questions:
Would I rather buy the "Ones" album/DVD and get all the material? Or rebuy all the remastered albums and get it piece by piece?
Are the 20 minutes of new commentary on the album worth it to me?
It's really up to you
If you don't own this album already, I STRONGLY suggest you buy it now, because you'll treasure it forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album!
This is one of the best albums ever recorded by any artist ever. I have the original 1994 issue, the version with the red sticker on the cover, and this, the best version available with excellent bonuses. YA NO, her best song she recorded, is on this disc. Fast-moving in a good way, this CD is probably the most essential Selena purchase. The commentary by her family is also informative and interesting. Anyone who doesn't own this album is a fool in my book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Selena's greatest English hits TOGETHER
This album is one to definitely own, All of Selena's English hits together on one Disk, with her Final English Songs, and Some of her first ever all on the same disk. You'll also get the Disco Medley from the Astrodome, which is a great bonus. Selena's music is a part of pop culture, and this album is one that only further's her part in Pop Culture.

3-0 out of 5 stars The vampires strike again
I know how Texans thrive on oil wells, and obviously the family of Selena and EMI Latin must have thought they hit an oil well upon the death of Selena. Funny how they can resurrect a "greatest hits", "best of" or something like this every year, if not more than once a year to please the Selena fanbase. Don't get me wrong, I love the music of Selena, but this collection could hardly be called her "greatest hits" or her "greatest English hits". Other than "Dreaming Of You", "I Could Fall In Love" and "Missing My Baby", the rest of this album is hardly to be referred to as "hits". More like filler and tracks reissued from collections after her death, such as the movie soundtrack and Anthologies. "Where Did The Feeling Go" is a nice ballad, "Don't Throw Away My Love" is a nice freestyle track, and "I'm Getting Used To You" is a song I hear once in a while when shopping, and the rest are basically perennial fan favorites who love her English crossover songs. As one reviewer suggested, her true hits aren't included here, such as "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom", "Como La Flor" and "No Me Queda Mas". But the family of Selena and EMI Latin once again suggest issuing another collection, whether they sell well or not. Don't be surprised if a Selena boxed set surfaces in the future, if it's not already in the works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, her real English language debut!
As awesome as 'Dreaming of You' and the 'Selena' movie soundtrack are (I've worn them both out), this is her true English album. All of these songs finally together on one CD showcase a talented artist who would have far outdone J-Lo and Britney if she'd been allowed to live and make more music in English. Play this along with the album 'Ones' (for the best of her Spanish language work), and you've got plenty of great music for hours. Rock on Selena!

5-0 out of 5 stars Selena, I miss you but I still love your music!!!
I'm a huge Selena fan, since the Selena movie came
out! This is my second CD of Selena, and it's a good
CD but not as good as her Dreaming Of You CD, the Dreaming
Of You CD was my first Selena CD to own, and her Greatest
Hits CD is my second CD of hers to own!! I didn't even know
she had some of these songs before until I got this CD and
I actually like some of them! :) Selena did a great job
making all of these songs on here!!! My favorite part on this
CD is her Disco Medley part, and my favorite songs are: I could fall in love, Dreaming of you,I'm getting used to you, and a million to one! :)
I reccomend you buy this CD today!!

TO SELENA: I miss you Selena, I wish you were still here with
us all! I love you still and always will!

5-0 out of 5 stars You Would Never Want To Stop Hearing It.
I discovered Selena the day she died. I bought a cd when I heard about her. Since then I started collecting all her cds. Her music is special and no one can ever sing the way she did. She sings in a very natural style. All the tracks are beautiful. It should be in your collection. If you never heard any of her songs before then get this cd. Pushing the musical envelope with each successive album, the young Alejandro Fernandez went for broke on this fusion of pop balladry and trad rancheras. In a smart move, he picked veteran studio wiz Emilio Estefan Jr. to come up with a winning recipe--great material and excellent musicianship to back up a topflight singer. Gloria Estefan teams up with Fernandez in the duet "En el Jardin," a touching tune about finding true love. But it's on the inspirational song "Yo Naci para Amarte" that Fernandez's velvety baritone fuses passion with power as he sings of coming to terms with destiny. On the same level is "No Se Olvidar," in which he conveys the fear of solitude that coexists with the drive of personal conviction. Both songs radiate with a potent mix of emotion, from angry yells to desperate pleadings. --Ramiro Burr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars La mas hermosa
I have only had this album for one week and already it is one of my favorites! As a die-hard fan of both Spanish music and romantic songs, I was so overjoyed to hear Alejandro's beautiful voice. He has a fabulous vocal range and such strength in his singing that he makes each song come alive with emotion - it is as though he truly feels the words. The lyrics are passionate and speak to every heart. Alejandro sings of love lost, love gained and love which one hopes for. If you enjoy romantic Spanish ballads, you will love this cd - there is not one bad song on it! The bonus? He is GORGEOUS!

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite CD
When I first heard this all I could do was weep...it made me feel emotions long gone from my life. It's the most romantic of all his recordings, and the beauty of it is overwhelming. If you want to renew your heart and lift your spirit, this will do it. 6 of the 10 songs are written by Kike Santander, an extraordinary poet and composer. That his poetry has found Alejandro's voice and soul to express them is a magical, and I'm sure fated, event. One of Kike's songs, "En El Jardin", is a duet with Gloria Estefan, and they have a lovely vocal blend. This is no ordinary, nice CD. It's a life-changing, powerful experience, and music at its very best. Gracias Alejandro, por tu musica, tu alma, tu genio.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Yo Naci Para Amarte" I was born to love this CD..lol
Alejandro Fernandez's music is captivating, absolutely mind boggling. Every time I listen to my favorite song "Yo naci Para Amarte" I literally have to force myself to stop the repeat button on my CD player. You know you love a song when you listen to it in your car, then you find yourself circling corners cause your just not ready to stop that song from playing yet. I love his ballads so much that I added them to my performances. I was raised on Latin music, I love it so much that I became a Latin Jazz singer. When I sing "Yo Naci Para Amarte" I get a good 5 or 10 tear droppers from the audience. When you're performing to one of Alejandro's songs, You have to bring it! I'm a female so I get to play around with the melodies. I've practiced his ballads for so long that I make myself cry when I sing them. Alejandro is my Latin version of SADE & STING. ABSOLUTELY TALENTED!! This Album is like a drug... You'll always be addicted .. Honestly, I'm listening to it right now on my headphones. And I can't stop it from playing. That's it! I'm hooked. lol

Absolutely one of my favorites! I have been listening to it daily since purchasing this CD. Every song is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Teacher's Dream!
I have been teaching Spanish language in a high school setting for 8 years now. I have always liked to use contemporary music in my classes to show grammar in action and culture as it lives within songs. A student from the Spanish Club suggested I get this CD. At that point, several years ago now, I hadn't heard of Alejandro. I purchased the CD and WOW! The lyrics just blew me away. I now use his music in class and my students just love it! There is nothing quite like a nice romantic Latin singer to get my chatty teenage girls to listen and pay strict attention...after, of course, they have had their say about his looks. His music reaches my students, and for that I will always be grateful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars classic, creative and fun fun fun!
This was my first Esquivel CD even though I have heard a lot of his stuff for a long time! It is a great collection to begin with a lot of fun, classic and kitschy tunes (and nothing too weird for you novices out there). Putting on this CD is guaranteed to get you dancing whether you're doing the dishes or getting ready to go out. We've also used it for clever background music for theater sketches. (and don't let the title discourage all you bachelorettes out there, it works for us too!)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Angels sing "zu zu zu zu" in heaven.
This music has had a huge effect on my life. Henceforth, three people this week have called me to comment on the passing of Juan Garcia Esquivel. Because of his death, I have become inspired to write a review of this quintessential lounge work. For me, this is a seminal lounge work, humorous, innovative, kitschy and happy as all hell. This is music reflective of a happy time, a hip time, and it is a joyous, infectious miracle. Certainly it is lounge music, not for everybody, but if anybody is going to turn you onto this stuff , it is the Late Great genius. I have been known to turn students onto Esquivel to the point that they bring this CD to their colleges................So buy this, and get back to a gentler time. And light a candle and say "pow" for our bespectacled pop master. I am sure, needing a break from George Harrison(though he was a genius too) and "My Sweet Lord", the angels now sing "Whatchamacallit" in heaven.
Thanks Esquivel. You made the worl a swinging place

I am an Esquivel fan. I must say that this booklet is well written and illustrated with some great photos. Bar-None really did a fine job there. The music is fine for the beginner just getting started in their Esquivel collection, giving some of his best performances on this CD. Nice package for the price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Irresistable Space Age Lounge
During a space-lounge phase I went through, I thought Esquivel was god. I reveled endlessly in the over-the-top, brass filled, zany numbers that fill this album. The phase has passed, but Esquivel has not grown stale. There is something very refreshing about his lack of seriousness. Wacky noises bounce from ear to ear over kitschy, outdated brass and steel guitar licks. One gets the feeling this is just nonsense made to display the interplay of a stereophonic sound system. A lot of this compilation is made up of covers of popular songs, which Esquivel successfully turns into his own crazy thing. He does, however, contribute some of his own compositions which turn out to be some of the most interesting. Yes, the vocals (Zoo Zoo Zoom, etc) are kind of annoying, but fortunatly they are used pretty sparingly. This is best approached as exciting background music, those looking for emotional revelations should definitely look elsewhere. But if you like a good dose of humor with your hip, ironic exotica/lounge, pick this one up. Start with the grandfather of so-called "space-age bachelor pad music." He doesn't dissappoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animation for the Ears
A crazy Mexican hybrid of Stan Kenton and Spike Jones, and the musical equivalent of a Tex Avery cartoon, Juan Garcia Esquivel produced some of the most innovative sounds to ever get shelved next to standard big band and easy listening titles. He found success in America when RCA marketed him in their "Living Stereo" series, and his techniques were celebrated and imitated during the hi-fi craze of the late '50s and early '60s. Besides his use of stereo panning, he composed with unusual instruments such as the double-neck steel guitar, the theremin, harpsichord, human whistling, and an array of exotic percussion. This excellent collection, compiled by the always reliable Irwin Chusid ("Songs in the Key of Z," "The Ernie Kovacs Record Collection," etc.), gathers some of Esquivel's most spirited numbers from his vast catalog. The disc debuted in 1994, just as the retro-lounge craze was emerging, and introduced the compact disc generation to the otherworldly sounds of space age pop. A string of subsequent Esquivel collections and reissues soon followed, but this CD is still the perfect introduction for new listeners wanting a good sampler. Chusid also assembled a great collection of other adventurous space age lounge acts for Rhino's "Cocktail Mix Vol. 1: Bachelor's Guide to the Galaxy," which is well worth seeking out. ... Read more
