A.B. Quintanilla III wants to have it both ways. The writer, producer, and brother of murdered Tejano goddess Selena has split the sophomore album from his band Los Kumbia Kings into English and Spanish halves. There's no strong connection between the two collections of songs, but Shhh! is still an enjoyable enough listen. Much like he did with the music of Selena, Quintanilla infuses the album's cumbia rhythms with pop, hip-hop, and R&B elements. By now, though, the trick has become a bit predictable. Songs such as "Me Enamoré" and "Me Estoy Muriendo" could easily be switched with any of the tracks on the Kumbia Kings' first album, Amor, Familia y Respeto. Better are Shhh!'s English-language tracks, which showcase a genuine hip-hop sensibility. It's easy to imagine acts such as Next or Sisqo crooning gems such as "Say It (a Million Times)," "Think'n About U," and the Rodney Jerkins-esque "In Da Zone." If they pursue that route, Quintanilla may find himself basking in the crossover success sister Selena never had a chance to enjoy. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Like always, they deliver their best work!
I love the Kumbia Kings. If you're a big fan of their first album you will most definitely love this second album of theirs. They put a new twist on the genre of Cumbia, integrating freestyle and hip-hop with their songs. Also, they sing some pretty love ballads in English. It's a great, long CD with different styles of songs. Check it out - you won't regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars HIPHOP,R&B,POP
SAY IT (A MILLION TIMES) WHAT CAN I SAY, THIS ALBUM IS OF THE HOOK. THE SPANISH SIDE IS AWSOME LIKE IT SHOULD OF BEEN. LOOKING THROUGH THE CD'S CREDITS I NOTICED A NEW WRITTER,PRODUCER,AND A NEW SINGER,(CISKO). I ALSO NOTICED THAT THIS GUY HAD A LOT TO DO WITH THE ENGLISH SIDE OF THE CD. COULD IT BE THAT THIS GUY KNOWS HIS MUSIC OR JUST A COINCIDENCE. THE ALBUM ROCKS I LISTEN TO THE CD EVERYDAY. I COULD RELATE TO A LOT OF THE LYRICS THESE GUYS SING, ESPECIALLY TO THAT SPANISH SONG "TE DI". I STRONGLY RECOMEND EVERYBODY GO BUY THIS ALBUM. I THINK THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF ANOTHER TRUE LEGACY. ALSO BEFORE WRITTING THIS REVIEW I NOTICED THAT THESE GUYS HOLD THE #1 SPOT ON BILLBOARD, WAY TO GO GUYS. I HOPE THIS IS NOT THE LAST TIME WE SEE YOU GUYS IN THE #1 SPOT. KUMBIA KINGS ROCK!

5-0 out of 5 stars an incredible album!!!
i remember running to the radio the first time i heard "BOOM BOOM", it was crazy! it had cumbia, rap, the trademark bird and even elements of john lee hooker it seemed. i knew AB had done it again. the sophmore jinx was blown out the box with this release. after i bought the album - it was like finding a pot of gold. "SSH" was even crazier! "Me Enamore" i never stop playing, the english songs are tight, and they even included 5 acts of comedy & a couple of remixes. with a lot of artists releasing albums with 2 hits & the rest fillers - AB truly wanted to give back to his fans. he did that & more!
the first album is a Classic, this one is Legendary!!! GO OUT AND GET IT!
...

5-0 out of 5 stars SHHH! Is The Album You Have To Buy!!!!
I've been living in Corpus Christi, Tx (Kumbia Kings hometown) for a little over 10 years. This is one of the best tejano band I have ever heard. SHHH! is one album you have to add to your collection. These guys are way to hot to pass up!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Kings are Kicking As..
To know when a group is good, you have to look at three important things. *Music *Sales *Style, and the KK have that and more.
These cd is HOTTTT, I have to tell you when you listen to a cd over and over and over that means is great, the music is fanstastic and the lyrics are fenomenal , NO WONDER THEY HAVE SOLD MORE THAN A MILLION COPIES :D :D
So SHHH! You better buy this before they run of of copies.

Four songs into Los Remixes 2.0, the second song-reconstruction effort from A.B. Quintanilla and the Kumbia Kings, something happens. The disc transforms from just another mildly diverting crossover attempt into a pulsing collection of late-night club anthems. It's a new direction for Quintanilla, whose expertise is usually showcased on colorful cumbias and Latin pop ditties. Los Remixes 2.0 works, however, because the house versions of cumbia hits such as "No Tengo Dinero," Insomnio" and "Amores Como el Tuyo" are meticulously molded into entirely new songs. Kudos to production teams ROCASound and Nopal Beat, who clearly know what they are doing. Particularly effective are the ROCASound mixes of "Insomnio" and "No Tengo Dinero," which could settle in easily underneath the disco ball of any club. Los Remixes 2.0 also features a trio of new tracks: "Sabes a Chocolate," a remake of a two-decade-old Menudo hit (circa Ricky Martin) featuring 14-year-old vocalist Pee Wee Gonzalez; "Thug Like Me," a limp attempt at hardcore street cred; and "I Wish," an innocuous remake of R&B singer Carl Thomas's 2000 hit. Stick with the remixes--your dancing shoes will thank you. --Joey Guerra ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Crap album
This album is nothing but a waste of money. Invest your money in thier olders cds, or if not at least K1 which is a awesome cd by the way. There is one new song on this cd, which is remixed a million times, along with the other ones. How many times can you remix a song? I mean come on, what are they wanting to be the chicano Diddy's. This cd is terrible, just download that one song if u like it, that sabes one. The rest of the album is really not worth it. If they are going to continue comming out with crap like this, they should just retire.

1-0 out of 5 stars GIVE ME A BREAK. THIS IS CRAP!
This album is so horrible. I stopped listening after the 4th song. If that does not tell you how bad it is, then I don't know what will. The Kumbia Kings can just stop now, because they have lost it! YUCK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the K1 boys
Forget the k1 boy they are just coping The Kumbia Kings come on K1 please just a desprate decisions

1-0 out of 5 stars Uh.... Isn't KK suppose to be Spanish???
Although I have been a Kumbia Kings fan since the start of their career, I have to admit that this is by far ONE OF THE WORSE CDS that they have came out with. It seems like the english 'rap' is too catchy and to be honest, the sound of it isn't the same. With too many new members coming and going... the music of KK will never be the same!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars KUMBIA KINGS SUCK NOW!!!
The kumbia kings used to be so awesome i have to admit, but these last three albums suck big time. They shouldn't even call themselves kumbia kings because they are not kings of kumbias, now they are the boring kings. It is all about K1 now baby yea! K1 will destroy AB because K1 are the real kumbia kings. So AB can just quit because he has lost it completely. ... Read more

There is one waltz missing on the cd: Rosas' Sobre Las Olas. Other than that this is cd is very pretty. Anything with Solis' voice is worth the price to get.

The first album in Arhoolie's superb Tex-Mex series, this traces the roots of the modern norteño-Tejano-conjunto sound. We hear the early accordion players and duet singers, then see them come together in the 1930s and '40s, forming the heart of the style as it has existed ever since. All the key names are here, from the blind fiddler El Ciego Melquiades to the magnificent Texan diva Lydia Mendoza, accordion pioneers Santiago Jiménez and Narciso Martinez, and the trend-setting Alegres de Teran. A 36-page booklet puts the music in context and makes this an essential purchase for anyone interested in border music. --Elijah Wald ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of La Mafia in 1 Package
I love this CD compilation. It has 20 of the greatest songs ever performed by La Mafia. They have so many great songs, but choosing some of my favorite songs i.e, Me Estoy Enamorando, Un Millon de Rosas, etc; was the best thing they could do. I've grown up listening to La Mafia, and since day one I fell in love with their rythmic tex-mex lyrics. And what else can I say but these songs are off the hook. I hope they can continue producing some of the best Tejano songs there is. I highly recommend this CD. Keep up the good work! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ECCELTIC MIX OF LATIN GUITAR AND HAUNTING VOCALS
THIS CD SHOULD BE ON YOUR LIST OF CDs TO BUY THIS YEAR. JAVIER GARCIA HAS HARNESSED HIS LATIN BACKGROUD AND CULTURE AND MIXED IT INTO A VERY DISTINCT SOUND ALL HIS OWN. LISTENING TO HIS MUSIC YOU GET THE IDEA THAT SOMEONE REALLY HURT HIM AT ONE POINT AND ALL THAT EMOTION COMES RIGHT THROUGH THE SPEAKERS. HIS MUSIC AND VOCALS ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL AS WELL AS EROTIC. I LOVE THIS CD!!!!!.

5-0 out of 5 stars eclectic indeed...
javier garcia is by far one the most talented, unique and original acts on the music scene period. this cd has been in my cd player ever since i got it. i can not ever begin to tell you how much i enjoy it. it goes beyond genres. songs like 'estaba ciego' 'a casa' and the irrisistible 'tranquila' are more than worth the price of the cd. Also check out the remix cd that was released with 'lagrimas negras.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Ageless and excellent
This CD came out several years ago, yet it remains one of my favorite CD's of all times. This guy is phenomenal and a true music maestro.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where is Javier?
Great CD! Bought it in Buenos Aires when it came out and still listen to it. Only thing that bugs me: the remix album is out of sale and he isn't publishing anything since his debut 1997.

WHERE IS JAVIER & WHAT IS HE DOING???

5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for the Next Garcia Project...
What a tremendously impressive debut from J. Garcia ! The music is warm, cultured, colorful, and deep. The Latin sounds are very familiar yet wander into some fantastic unchartered musical landscapes and territory. The flamenco-gypsy sounding Mujer, the danceable Tranquila, the love obsessed and haunting Seras Mia (gorgeous classical quitar) are prime examples of the eclectic styles that work coherently. The simple and low keyed characteristic of La Lluvia translates into a song that can still be powerful in meaning and music (it's strength is in it's subtlety)! The roaring twenties' English sung track Love for Life includes a twist of rock. Simply astonishing ! He's a genius at being able to take so many musical international styles and bring them to perfect unity for the entire album process.

Anyone who listens to Latin artists or groups such as Mana, Thalia, or Alejandro Fernandez surely needs to add this to their musical colllection; It's a definite hit ! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Performance
Most live albums don't do justice to the artist or his work. Not the case with Juan Gabriel. His live albums are his best and "En el Palacio de Bellas Artes" (Mexico City) is no exception. This album doesn't come to immediate "life" as does "Celebrando 25 Anos en el Palacio de Bellas Artes," but when the Mariachi move in about midway through the first CD, Gabriel really comes to life and there's no stopping him after that. He's got all the classics covered, most versions superior to his studio work. The "Hasta que te conoci" medley (25 minutes beginning on disc 2) and "Viva Mexico" are wildly exciting. A sidebar: If you are interested in the videos (2 volumes) and wonder what's on which volume because the songs aren't listed, Vol. I ends 15 minutes into the "Hasta que te conoci" medley. The songs in the vidoes follow the order of the CD song listing except that there's a lot of extra music on the videos because they total 180 minutes and the CDs about 100 minutes.

5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant, exciting energetic...
En el palacio de las bellas artes was my introduction to Juan Gabriel. What a n explosive introduction it was! His music is truly beautiful and exemplif ies his ability to capture the emotions, hopes and fears of everyday living. an energetic performance electrifying and tangible energy flow between performer and audience.

4-0 out of 5 stars great live cd
This is a cd if you want to hear him live. in the medley his voice wears out and he forces it leaving a bad performance to enjoy listening. But there are some AWESOME arrangements on some songs. the sound is clear and good. minus one star for his weared out voice on an important medley.

5-0 out of 5 stars A spectacular live performance and recording
Juan Gabriel is most likely Mexico's greatest living singer/songwriter. This 2-CD set captures a truely spectacular live performance. The second disc is nothing short of a masterpiece. Backed by a full chorus, symphonic orchestra, some of the country's finest mariachis, and rythme section, Gabriel brings it all together in a master production that truely captures the power of such a grand live preformance. Even listenners with little comprehension of Spanish can apreciate the passion and power of this music. The medly "Hasta Te Conoc'", which comprises the first half of disc 2, is classic! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the genius from Michoacan
Juan Gabriel has been recording his marvelous compositions for 30+ years, and has become one of Mexico's legendary and most prolific cantautores, with the huge successes he has had as a solo artist, duets with the likes of Rocio Durcal, and with over 200 international artists making hits of his music as well. This compilation of songs from the 70's and 80's includes some of his most famous, like "Se Me Olvido Otra Vez", and "Ya No Vuelvo a Molestarte", but my two favorite tracks that get the replay button are "Con Todo y Mi Tristeza", which is an enchanting valse, and the final "Con Un Poco Amor". The melodies are fabulous, and the lyrics poetic and heartfelt.

His high-pitched voice perhaps for some is an acquired taste, and I must admit, that after many years of listening, it is only recently that I caught the "Gabriel Fever" and now fully appreciate him as a songwriter and singer; better late than never, as it is a very pleasant affliction.
As with many compilations of this type, there is no recording information included, but as befits one of Mexico's greatest stars, the mariachi musicians backing him are top notch, the sound is good, and the total time is 46:47.
This is a wonderful collection to sample the songwriting genius of Gabriel, and his unique heart and soul singing style.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not his best collection
Ok, a guy can't work for 30 years without putting out some less than remarkable pieces. And many of them seem to be assembled on this CD. The good numbers--"No vale la pena," "Se me olvido otra vez," "Inocente pobre amigo" and the like--pale in comparison to their rendering in Gabriel's "Juan Gabriel: En el Palacio de Bellas Artes" live CD and videos. It doesn't please me to say less than positive things about my favorite singer, but I have to tell the truth. This collection is a little boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Juan Gabriel the Living Legend:
I have been a fan of Juan Gabriel for over 20 years. I am proud to have such a talented and gifted artist of Mexican decent gift the world such beautiful music. Juan Gabriel is a living legend; he is a great composer and artist. His style is unique and giving all his love to his work he has the ability to share every emotion with us and make us laugh or cry. This CD is a treasure; all songs are sung with Mariachi -filling each song with a sentiment that will make you feel his passion. I am sure you will agree once you listen for yourselves.

... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The bounciest, most exhilarating album
In the piles and piles of recently-released CDs on my desk, every year or so I seem to find one that makes me feel really excited about my job and about the future of Latin music. So far this year 13 is that CD. Javier García (along with Gustavo Santaolalla) has put together the bounciest, most exhilarating album I've heard in the past few years (probably since Manú Chao's Proxima Estación: Esperanza.) You can tell García had a blast playing around with almost every Latin rhythm there is, fusing son, rock, bolero, ska, calipso, rap, flamenco, etc. En fin, this is a well-rooted Caribbean-flavored album with a modern twist that also features Cuban trumpet player Arturo Sandoval and Paul McCartney's drummer Abe Laboriel Jr.

5-0 out of 5 stars the wait was worth it!
Altough it took soooo long before we finally could listen to new music of Javier Garcia. His album of 1997 has a prominent place in my Latin popcollection (Ricky Martin, Juanes, Robi Draco Rosa, Jorge Moreno, Alejandro Sanz, Mana, Carlos Vives, Santana and much more) and "13" will have that too.
The first impression is ...great, dancable caribean music.. At first I missed the slow, jazzy songs with those typical Javier sounds, but taking more time to listen i decided: it's all there. The music has more "modern" sounds like rap, well i am not good in putting names on music. I just know i am totally hooked on this album since i have it and it has the right mix of various styles to keep me interested for a long time!
