Everything about this CD, from its eye-popping cool packaging to its beautiful booklet, is wonderful, perhaps peerless. It's a study that spans 16 countries, catching paeans to childhood sleep from varied traditions. The set traverses the Cape Breton Gaelic tradition with the Rankin Family, Haiti with pop stars Boukman Eksperyans, and the African continent with music from Tonga, Algeria, and Cameroon. Despite their distances from each other, at times the songs sound quite alike. Voices might begin alone but then gather into choral size, with a reliance on wordless passages to emphasize the flow of time as sleep encroaches. In execution, the surprises are many. Algerian Houria Aïchi sounds East Indian; the Traditional Japanese Music Ensemble of New York sounds poised somewhere between a stately concert of historical court music and a touching homage to childhood; and German singer Michelle sounds pop-music ready even as she toes the line on singing a sleep-triggering song. Beyond being a great collection of international music, this is probably the most interesting mix available of cultural voices approaching the issue of children sleeping. --Andrew Bartlett ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Uniquely enchanting, lullingly blissful--a worldly baby gift
Initially, I ordered The Planet Sleeps to add to the multicultural music collection at my daughter's elementary school library; the CD arrived last night, and I became so taken with it that I already plan to order several more as new baby gifts as well as one for my own children. The hauntingly beautiful "Chi Mi Na Morbheanna" (which I listened to nearly 20 times in the first 24 hours) is worth the entire purchase price, but the other songs are marvelous too, and those that don't have immediate appeal will most likely grow on you. I was holding my toddler son in my arms while listening to the CD, and he fell asleep during the sitar lullaby from India. For those of us trying to raise our children with a familiarity and appreciation of other world cultures, this lullaby collection is truly invaluable.

The extensive liner notes (36 pp.) are often quite moving, offering details about each artist, country, song, and recording experience as well as a song translation. The back of the case says "music meant to bring bliss into a frantic world." This collection certainly achieves its goal--and it's not just for bedtime by any means.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most beautiful CD ever to grace my home.
This CD is exactly what I have been looking for. I play it softly as background music while playing with my 2 year old and 6 month old. "Ana Latu" is one of our favorites. I also feel that the write-up on "Oj Talasi" alone is worth buying the album. David Field journals his work at compiling these lullabies, adding to the feeling of connectedness that imbues from this collection. I was especially glad (and surprised) to find a lullaby from my own distant heritage, "Yahnaway Hay Yowna". This disc makes a wonderful baby shower or blessingway gift for expectant parents. The "jewel" case is all-natural, too, better for our Mother Earth!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Calming
I started listening to this CD when I was 7 months pregnant to help myself go to sleep. Since my daughter was born 5 months ago, we put it on whenever she has trouble calming down to go to sleep. As soon as the music starts she begins to relax and takes her nap. We all love hearing the beautiful lullabies play throughout the house.

5-0 out of 5 stars A relaxingly adventurous album!!!!
I can't understand most of the songs (I think there's only one in English, if that), but the music speaks a lot just as the words do, so it's good. Each song is enchanting and engrossing, you get lost in the melodies. They are all smooth and calm, peaceful. I suggest this album to anyone who just wants to unwind and let loose all the stress of the day!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dream Time
I have been listening to this album for the past seven years and never grown tired of it. I bought it to play for the children I taught, but I have come to love it myself. It is the sure cure for nighttime tension, and beautiful to listen to at any time.

The material is interesting and eclectic, but above all, lovely. ... Read more

    1-0 out of 5 stars buy vol.2
Few selections good. If you love Loreena McKennitt
keep buying her work, skip this cd and buy vol.2 of this title.
Vol. 1 will not keep your ear interested for long.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful voices
This CD is a beautiful compilation of many of today's contemporary female Celtic artists. Loreena McKennitt singing Annachie Gorden is a perfect example of the beauty that can be found in this edition - almost as beautiful as Mother Eire herself. Marian Bradfield, Melanie O'Reilly and Aine Furey, all contributing tracks show the wide variety of singing styles and popularity of many of the artists including. The songs selected tend to be traditional, but with a new spin such as Rita Connolly singing Ripples in the Rockpools. All of the songs whether traditional or contemporary are all timeless classics.

3-0 out of 5 stars new celtic woman cd
I was disappointed with this cd only because I had thought the music would be in a more traditional celtic style. Although the musical and recording quality is quite fine, most of these sections are in a pop/rock or folk sound. The selections that are more traditional celtic sound include only those by McKennitt and Ni Dhomhnaill. If you're looking for a contemporary vocal female sound in general, you will probably like this recording but the composers could be from a number of Western countries besides those of Celtic origin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great compilation of contemporary celtic music
This is a terrific album. Some compilation albums can be uneven, this is consistently good. Loreena McKennitt's Anachie Gordon is very good, from one of her earlier albums. I especially like the 4th track, Tonight Is Just For Us. This is a CD I'll listen to a lot.

I also like the fact that they published the lyrics in the liner notes.

With the explosion of celtic music, there is a lot available - good, bad, and mediocre, and of course a lot of it depends on personal taste. To gauge similar tastes, I also like Loreena McKennitt, Clannad/Maire Brennan, Sinead O'Connor, the Putamayo Celtic Women of the World 1 (but not 2), and the Women of Heart series. ... Read more

Hawaiian slack-key guitar began evolving in the 1830s, when Spanish and Mexican cowboys brought guitars to the cattle ranches of the Big Island. It became a recognizable style around the turn of the century. The term refers to the practice of slacking some strings from standard tunings to create open tunings; the thumb provides the bass line while the other fingers play melody and improvise. It might thus remind some listeners of the fingerpicking of a country master like Doc Watson, but the style has a wind-blown, wide-open quality all its own. Traditionally an accompanying instrument in a group setting, slack key has recently moved out front, and this all-instrumentals CD shows why. From the light touch of Moses Kahumoku or Leonard Kwan to the bluesiness of George Keo or Ray Kane to the pop feel of Keola Beamer, it offers the best possible introduction to the music. --John Morthland ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Sampler Album I Own
Hawaiian music can mean many things - anything from old steel guitar to contemporary "Jawaiian" music. Out of all the genres of Hawaiian music however, slack key guitar is probably the most accessible to those unfamiliar with any type. Simply put, slack key is a unique form of tuning and playing acoustic guitar - often with gorgeous results!

This collection of songs from Hawaii's most famous living slack key guitar artists is some of the most beautiful and relaxing music you may ever hear. Listening to each song, it is hard to believe that only one person is playing - each artist has a unique technique of playing both bass and melody at the same time.

If I were trapped on a desert island with the choice of only one CD, this would probably be the one I would choose. One final note - this CD contains excellent liner notes as well, which makes it is the perfect intro to slack key information-wise as well as musically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful guitar tuning and played from the heart.
I bought my wife this CD for her birthday. My musical reality was rocked forever at hearing the absolute beauty of this soulful, relatively unknown style. I am a surfer and have surfed in Hawai'i and spent lots of time with the local surfers there. They showed us lots of aloha and they are wonderful people with lots of respect for the ocean, land, etc.. Slack Key is an expression of this... played from the heart-- just beautiful. Hearing it made me want to play it-- to express the aloha "I" have inside. I even bought a Koa guitar to keep it pure (and a high end one to ensure I learn).

I'm just a sentimental fool (as Brian Ferry said).

5-0 out of 5 stars Mellow, mellow and very mellow.....
i can just imagine lying in a hammock on a palm fronded tropical beach with a cold drink in my hand enjoying the sunset. oh, and someone next to me is playing a slack key guitar. aahhhhh.... how nice.
yes this cd conjures up such pleasant images. however, what really happens is i listen to this cd on my computer while i'm doing work, and my surroundings are more of a concrete jungle than tropical beach; a less than idyllic setting. it's cool though, i'm still happy when this cd plays....

    5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet...sweet...da kine..
I am really shocked to see that this CD is in the top 1,500 in sales rank. That is a great suprise. More people into slack key than I knew. Cyril Pahinui's opener is a 12-string masterpiece, and my favorite cut is a classical guitar slack key track, "Pohakuloa", done by Moses Kahumoku. His style is simply as heartfelt as it comes. Keola Beamer is represented on this one, too. Might I suggest a CD by John Keawe, "Auhele" for some more serious mastery of this beautiful and unique genre. ALOHA!

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Slack Key
Classic slack key from some of the masters. Mostly traditional songs and beautifully played. Must have it if you are seriously interested in Hawai'ian slack key. ... Read more

Why is it that island cultures so often create the most magical, deeply individual sounds? Is it because they are usually miles away from corrupting outside influences? Perhaps it is due to the fact that they are forced to create music from their own inner resources. The powerful voices of Jamaican reggae, Cuban rumba, and Puerto Rican salsa have been joined on the world stage by Cape Verdean morna and Hawaiian slack-key guitar, and the hits just keep on coming. The tunes on this set are not terribly revealing about their place of origin, but plenty of likable grooves turn up, primarily dance-oriented party fodder. It's like a casual tourist's piña colada-fueled vacation fantasy: a very pretty and colorful interlude that doesn't have much to do with real life in either place. It's perfect for lazy summer days and nights, ethnic banquets, and tropical-themed celebrations. --Christina Roden ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Authentic Island Music
I love the international sounds of this CD! I normally like Calypso style music, and this is not that style; but it is unique and really quite good! It sounds like something I would hear traveling to exotic lands! A new sound for me, and after listening a few times, i've grown to really like it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories of my honeymoon.
After getting married, my husband whisked me off to the Island of St. Thomas. What an adventure. The people were so freindly (how can you be depressed when the weather is so perfect) and the food was decadent and gourmet. We intented to stay a week and ended up living to tell about a hurricane. At least you could say the biggest storms in our marriage happened on our honeymoon. After returning I searched for music to remind me of our fun filled days on the sun soaked sands. This music takes me back to where I want to be. If you haven't been to the Islands you will want to get some plane tickets, make some relevant excuse and get out of the cold. Take this CD with you on a car trip for a fun relaxing carefree trip.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sit in the sun, sip a Mai Tai...Aah!
It doesn't get much better than this. I love this album in the hot, hot summer. And it's great for chasing away the "no sun ever, winter blues" in Pittsburgh. This music makes me feel, happy and sexy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Instant vacation
This is a fine representation of island music and another home run for the folks at Putumayo! Put this on and I guarantee it will definitely help the winter doldrums. If you've been to the islands, you know what I mean, it will take you back. This is the real deal, not Jimmy Buffett ideal, (don't get me wrong , he's great although getting a bit commercialized) this is what you need for hosting an island themed party. Everyone loves it because it's so different. Exotic, but not over the top; It dosen't matter if you don't understand the lyrics, the music moves you at a more basic level that transcends language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Island Escape!
I heard this at my favorite coffee shop (The Coffee shop in Thornton Park - Orlando, FL) and had to have it. This is a great mix of island music that will transport you to the islands. Reminds me of days spent island hopping! After 'discovering' this Putumayo blend, I have ordered Calypso and other cd's. They are wonderfully relaxing to listen to while trapped at work dreaming of an island adventure! Great for the body and soul! ... Read more

This 1995 tribute to the late Brazilian bossa nova master draws from the cream of the Verve/Polygram jazz catalog. Saxophonist Stan Getz, who introduced the sublimely sensual bossa nova to North American audiences in the early '60s, is joined by vocalist João Gilberto on the well-known title track and by guitarist Luiz Bonfa on the exquisite "O Morro Nao Tem Vez." Sarah Vaughan ("Corcovado"), Billy Eckstine ("Felicidade"), Wes Montgomery ("How Insensitive"), and Oscar Peterson ("Wave") also turn in classic performances from the '60s. Jobim himself offers guitar and piano accompaniment on several tracks and duets with Brazilian vocalist Elis Regina on "Aguas de Marco." Although subsequent generations of lame lounge singers have robbed bossa nova of its original mystique, in its pure form, this music is unsurpassed in conveying an intimately romantic mood with carefree sophistication. --Rick Mitchell ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply one of the best compilations I've ever listened to...
I have no idea how any reveiwer of this album could have anything but praise for it. Especially those who say Ella and Sarah Vaughn's versions of 'Desafinado' and 'Corcovado' (respectively) were 'butchered'! Unbelievable!

These are two of the standouts on the cd... Ella's rendition is fun and uptempo --- a rare twist on this beautiful song which could be sung by tone deaf singers and still sound great.

Sarah Vaughn's version of 'Corcovado' should be the standard by which every cover of this song is compared -- it's simply marvelous!

Oscar Peterson's version of 'Wave' is the best cover of this song ever recorded (including Jobim's!). If it doesn't blow you out of the water, no music ever will.

This is a must have cd for anyone interested in Bossa Nova/Latin Jazz and if you've never listened to bossa nova in your life then this is the cd you want to get to begin your love affair!

Every friend that I've played this album for in the last 2-3 yrs have purchased a copy for themselves. One of my best friends even met his (now) wife after leaving my home to immediately purchase this album (a fitting tribute to the music).

THIS IS A MUST HAVE CD FOR ANY COLLECTION!

2-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing-- avoid
Jobim is truly the greatest songwriters of the 20th Century. Unfortunately most of the arrangements on this CD are utter (disappointments). The songs with Getz, Joao and Astud Giberto are as a general rule decent, yea sublime-- though even here some of the songs are a bit over-orchestrated favoring tone color over intimacy-- not my idea of the samba. I am reserving judgement on the renditions by Wes Montgomery and Oscar Peterson, but Sarah Vaughan butchered Corcavado, and likewise Ella Fitzgerald with Desafinado-- I don't even know how to express how bad those two performances/arrangement are. Do yourself a favor and skip this cd. Check out instead Verve Jazz Masters 13 Antonio Carlos Jobim.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad sampler of jazz artists covering Bossa nova
Bossa Nova was essentially created by Charlie Byrd, when he mixed Brazillian rhythms with jazz improvisiations, then it became more well known in the jazz world thru Getz, and in the pop world thru ametuer singer Austid Gilberto. Though there isn't a track by Byrd, at least not as a leader, there are great performances by vocalists Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine, and tons of Gets/Gilberto. Though this won't cover alll you need and you should go righy out and buy the Byrd/Gets disc and the Getz Gilberto disc, this is a fine sampler and as good as any others out therem if not better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Tribute to the Composer
This is a solid songbook that came out about maybe 6 years ago. It features many different artists from different timeframes and jazz genres with their interpretations and remakes of some of Jobim's classics. You also have some of the original bossa nova artists here too for good measure. I enjoy this cd even today. Sometimes there's a remake of one of the songs featured here that I specifically feel like hearing.

One of those remakes that I enjoy is Oscar Peterson's remake to the classic "Wave". Admittedly I don't like the end of the song. But the way it starts out, so cool and mysterious gives me memories. And then after the build-up, the way he comes in with the piano, without fail, makes me sing along with it "Vou te contar, Os olhos já não podem ver"... Another good tune is the dark and sensual version of "Amor em Paz" or "Once I loved" by Shirley Horn. It isn't like the wonderful orchestration that you're used to on the classic Jobim albums but I still like it because you can feel it... "Love is the saddest thing when it goes away". Wes Montgomery's take of Insensative is also solid but I still prefer the one with Getz on the sax.

All in all I would recommend this. Be forewarned though - there are loads of bossanova compilations and this one has the usual staples (Girl from Ipanema, Waters of March). And some takes didn't get me; this version of Tristeza isn't for me - you want to hear a great one, listen to the original on the "Black Orpheus" Soundtrack. There's something about it, the guitar and city ambiance and sambas. Also notice that this cd has a direct companion pice titled "Wave: The Antonio Carlos Jobim Songbook". It has a similar cover and is done in a similar mold as this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Penchant for the sublime

5-0 out of 5 stars This is real music
This CD was definetly worth every penny. If you enjoy all kinds of great music, you'll really like this. The sound quality is really good, and it sounds exactly like steel drums are supposed to. I really liked this CD. It's really good music by really good musicians. I recommend this to you if you like good music.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Sounds like something recorded in someone's garage. No accompanyment. Very disappointed in this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not much music for a CD
This CD only has a play time of 22:55. Nowhere on the case, in the liner notes, nor on the disc itself is there an indication of how short the music selections are. There are 9 songs on the disc, so by doing the math, average song time is 2 1/2 minutes. Come on, this is ridiculous!

4-0 out of 5 stars Steel Drums Galore!
When I first ordered this CD I was expecting the usual percussion and drumbeats that generally accompany the steel drum. I soon realized that the title was literal. If you like steel drum solos, then this CD is for you. Though it's not what I originally expected, the musicians are very good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good CD!!
This CD is a good one if you are lloking for a new sound of classical bellydance music. Some songs use a electronic bellydance sound. It's cool for variations. The music is great just for listening or for dancing. The first time I listened to this CD, I did not like it because I expected to hear some classical belly dance songs.
There is my review for all the songs:
1)Raks Africa is not my favorite song, but it sound goog when it slow in the half-ending of the song.
2.Ay Ya Leil: it's a good song to bellydance. It's a modern pop version of arabic music.
3.El Salam: Hakim is always great. Good song for medium rythm dances.
    4. Warda: This is my favorite song of this CD. This song has different music rythms, so you can do veil, afst turns, etc...it goes slow, medium and fast.
    5.Ice Queen: It's ok. It's a electronic bellydance song.
    6. talakik: Great to dance
7.neptidi....: It's classican arabic music..always good to dance
8.Chicky: This song is a lenctronic belly dance song. It's fun and cool to dance. Turkish rythms...
9.Sahra....Good song to do a drum solo...
10: Bitwannes Beek..Cool song, but I do not like for belly dance...maybe for gypsy dance
    11-15...ok...classical belly dance music
    16. Ya Habibi Albi is great for belly dance. This saudi singer is great. The song invites you to dance. One of my favorite songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivating music!
As a teacher of Middle Eastern and other Dance Forms, I found this CD a DELIGHTFUL addition to my library. My classes were totally re-energized by this music! Yes, it's modern, and it's not for everyone, but it's not that pain level disco junk, either!

3-0 out of 5 stars Make "Bellylicious" CD your first choice before this one
I bought Bellydance Superstars after I had already own Bellylicious for 4 months ( which I played to death ) & frankly I was very disappointed . I really liked the majority of the songs on Bellylicious because they were really catchy , quite new & each song is by a different artist . When I bought & listened to Bellydance Superstars ( which has 1 song in common with Bellylicious - Chicky by Ooajami) , I was dismayed to find that 2 or more songs were by the same artist & the songs weren't as good probably because some traditional bellydance music was included .Let me be the first to say that I don't bellydance - I just like bellydancing music .Perhaps some songs on Bellylicious may be too fast to actually bellydance to , I'm not an expert here - whatever it is I hardly ever listen to Bellydance Superstars prefering instead the faster beats & greater variety on Bellylicious .

5-0 out of 5 stars Bellydance Superstars is GREAT!
I've had this cd for a long time now, and I never get tired of it. We've used several of the pieces in the classes and workshops that I've taken with GREAT dancers. There's a good mix of music, pop and classic. This cd has also introduced me to several artists that I may not have encountered elswhere.
A must have if you enjoy all types of Arabic music

5-0 out of 5 stars you will bellydance all night!!
I love this CD, everytime I hear it, it makes me wanna move and it inspires me new movements and choreographies. Now I'm looking for another CD like this one, because I own a lot of bellydance CDs, but noone is like bellydance superstars! It's the first one with so fast modern music which makes you wanna dance all night and let your body vibrate in all kind of shimmies. This music is really exciting and will cheer you up everytime you listen to it. I keep playing it and I never get annoyed! I don't like writing reviews but this time I really felt I had to defend this CD. I don't quite understand the very bad review someone wrote here. I think music is a very subjective matter and everybody is free to like a CD or not but call this one 'garbage' I think is really too strong and unjustified.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Bossa Nova and MPB
I picked this up several years ago, and what a great disc this is. It's got some old classics on it and some pretty rare tracks too. At the time I picked it up, this was actually a series. There is another cd titled: "Samba Brasil" that has a similar cover, but is white and green.

The artists on this are fantastic. From Gal Costa do Vinicius De Moraes, you're taken on a real trip through some of the classics in Brazilian music. Perhaps most interesting and stellar of which is the Elis Regina only vocal of Waters of March. It has such an innocent sound! Carlos Lyra's "Influencia Do Jazz" will take you to a beach in the late 60's, and Baden Powell's Consolacao has that rich acoustic sound I've grown up with and love. And check out Joao Gilberto's song here along with Gal Costa's tracks... She's a VERY underrated singer IMO. But this CD isn't without fault. The sound quality can be suspect on some tracks, and a song or two weren't what I would have selected from the musicians here. (You can find "Aguas De Beber" and "Girl from Ipanema" on virtually every compilation.

Still I would have to recommend this. It's not that expensive, and out of most of the Bossa Nova/MPB samplers, this is one of the better ones IMO. For the make of Samba De Bencao, Elis Regina, Baden Powell, Tamba Trio (who did the wildly successful take of "Mas Que Nada" that featured in the 1998 World Cup commercial with Brazilian footballers in an airport) and the others... good tunes. Also check out Nova Bossa Nova - a companion piece to "Red Hot & Rio". There is some overlap, but the other version of Baden Powell's cut on that comp is better than this one IMO. Maybe also check out Bossa Nova Gold, a two disc set of MPB and Bossa Nova.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I could Give It 6 Stars
One of my all time favorite discs! A great introduction for this style of Brazilian music. Romantic beyond belief!

5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting afternoon music
Put this on as a soundtrack for the perfect afternoon. It will bring summer to winter, yet cool off a sultry August day. There are other more comperhensive reviews here, and it was by reading them that I bought this. I am happy I did!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to bossa nova
This great introduction to Bossa Nova couldn't be a better value-for-money. Sampling from each of the major trends in the genre, _Bossa Nova Brasil_ will turn the mildest curiosity in the rhythms into a genuine interest. This is great I-just-got-off-work-and-I've-got-a-date-in-an-hour music. Put it on in your car to unwind and enjoy the ride. Or throw open your windows on a spring day and celebrate the change of seasons. Or share it with someone you love to dance embarrassingly unwell with. Whatever you do, though, give bossa nova a try, and trust that this collection will be an excellent way to start.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A stick a stone...
Great compilation with great artists; it reminds you of a sunset beach in Brasil. Elis Regina's solo origanal of Waters of March is timeless and Leila Pinheiro's Pra Iluminar is one of the smoothest sambas I had ever heard. Other artists don't disappoint. A must have for any Bossa Nova collection. ... Read more

Many subtly varied kinds of music fall under the rubric of flamenco, which is a style of singing, dancing, and even living, as well as playing the guitar. This collection presents a good guitar selection, highlighted by the polished technique of Sabicas, the profundity of Manolo de Huelva, and the sheer brilliance of Melchor de Marchena. There is a drastic change of atmosphere in the transition from track 10 (a zapateado played by Nino Ricardo) to track 11: Manolo de Huelva accompanying the voice of Manuel Vallejo. Suddenly we are in a cuadro, the natural environment of flamenco, with a group of participants clapping, stamping their feet, and shouting encouragement to the musicians. No longer is it just a man sitting alone on a stage or in a studio, playing the guitar fluently and flawlessly; this is cante hondo, the heart of flamenco, intense and astringent, and the best of this disc's many flavors. --Joe McLellan ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For all lovers of true Flamenco
With all the 'Neuvo Flamenco' and its accompaning popularity. It is nice (and a relief) I might add, to hear the flamenco guitar in its purist form. Not only does this cd contain Sabicas and Nino Ricardo. It also contains four very rare perfomances by Manolo de Huelva. Which are difficult to find anywhere. Also included are Melchor de Marchena performing six pieces. This is truly Pure Flamenco at its best.

3-0 out of 5 stars Carlos Montoya
to the reviewer who asked if anyone heard of Carlos Montoya. I not only have heard of him but i saw him in person perform at Miss State University for a Lyceum event. It was about 1960. I have never seen anything like it, one man on a stool all alone, and music and percusion sounds from his finger nails and fingers that is not describable, you have to be there to understand. That one evening turned me into a true flamingo fan, but I have never found anything that compares to Carlos Montoya. He was spiritually moving.

2-0 out of 5 stars Have you heard of???
To all of those who have heard many flamenco styles. I have but one individual. do you remember Carlos Montoya Let me know if you have any music of him. he is a rare bred indeed. I learned to play his music when i was but 12 Hope someone has heard of him He was discribed has having the fastest fingers in the world. Ty

If you are looking for something along the lines of Gypsy Soul (HIGHLY recommend it) or Gypsy Passion (also wonderful music), which I was, this most likely is not one for you.

This is R-A-W & hard core Flamenco guitar without much, if any, other vocal or instrumental accompaniment. I guess, the title says it all.

    I am warming up to it......slowly ;-).

Including contributions from Tex-Mex power folkie Tish Hinojosa, Cuban opera diva Clara Alonso, and Nelie Lebrón Robles, lead singer of Paracumbé, an Afro-Puerto Rican outfit, Latin Lullaby is a richly moving encounter with dream-inducing tunes sung in Spanish. Drawing on the relatively new folk customs of Latin America, this collection features elegant guitar noodling, classical orchestration, a cappella intimacy, and straight-ahead guitar and voice lullaby, as on "Duermete Mi Nino" ("Sleep My Child"), Venezuela's national anthem. Also present are progressively traditional ballads of parental love and protection, adult concerns, and gently rootsy narratives detailing the everyday responsibilities of child rearing. The latter is exemplified by Mili Bermejo's "La Cuna de Tu Hijo" ("The Cradle of Your Child"), in which a proud papa labors over crafting a customary baby bed, as well as by Cuban pop star Xiamantha Laugart's cheeky medley about a mother's negligence and a dancing baby. --Paige La Grone ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My baby's favorite CD
This CD is my baby's favorite since he was only a week old. It is so soothing to be put to sleep to and the songs are so melodic and a welcome change from those clangy anoying music box type music. This is real music you would listen to yourself for a nice hot bath. The songs are easy to learn and sing with your child weather or not you are a spanish speaking family. It was a nice way for my baby to learn Spanish and reenforce his language in the home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sleepytime Music
I bought this CD for my daughter when she was just a couple of weeks old. She's now 3 mos. old and won't go to sleep unless we play it for her. Sometimes I can hum the "Senora Santana" song to her and she falls right to sleep. I highly recommend this CD

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful CD
My baby loves this CD- it makes him sooo sleepy. It makes us sleepy too! There is one song that is a little "upbeat" and not really "lullaby-like" but I would still give it 5 stars. The spanish lyrics are beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic, Soul-Searching Music
This CD is incredible -- my infant son was lulled to sleep by it, and it calmed him when nothing else could. Well, I missplaced the CD for about a year and a half, had another baby during that time, and found it today while I was doing a deep cleaning of our house. I popped the CD in, and my son (now three years old) sat there enchanted. I just now rocked him to sleep like I used to while listening to it, and it brought back a flood of heart-warming memories. Then I put my infant daughter to sleep, and it was touching to see her fall asleep to it, too. The songs touch your very soul, especially A La Nanita Nana.

5-0 out of 5 stars My baby loves this CD!
My baby boy, who is now 9.5 months old, was adopted at 7 months from Latin America. We listen to this CD every night, and before each nap. Every time I put it on, his eyes get huge, and he is mesmerized by the music. He listens to it very calmly for about 15 minutes, and then drifts off to sleep. I really like it, too. It's very, very calming. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

At once spicy hot and languorously sweet, Putumayo Presents Cuba is a passionate marriage of active and passive, masculine and feminine, a contemporary festival of sound whose roots were born in defiance of onerous distraction and oppression. Based on Afro-Cuban culture, whose music comes from a combination of European and African instrumentation, the songs in this collection swing with the energetic rhythms of traditional son (also the base of salsa). Layered over the repetitive beat, guitars chime, maracas add shimmy, and trumpets take the upper accent melody, often repeating or contrasting the main vocal melody. One of the finest contributions to the disc is Mi Son's "Mecanica de Amor," in which the band substitutes the violin for the lead trumpet, making a treat of the unexpected. Irakere's funky fusion "Boliviera" comes on gangbusters with beefy bass, full horn section, and featured flute melody. Containing superb liner notes, Putumayo Presents Cuba makes a fine introduction to this island's rich sound, and a superb remedy to the blues. --Paige La Grone ... Read more

This CD is lots of fun. If you are new to Cuban music, Putumayo has put together a delightful overview. Based on this purchase, I hope to get my hands on more CDs from Putumayo. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuban Musical Elixir
A superb collection of Cuban songs that explores the various styles with complete professionalism. Some of the BVSC stars are here, such as Ibrahim Ferrer and Eliades Ochoa. Ferrer opens the CD to get you right into the mood with his beautiful voice soaring behind driving rhythmns as he improvises while a chorus encourages his improvisaation. Every track is superb, rich with the flavor of Cuba, con sabor. I can't get enough of Eliades Ochoa so this CD was a delight as he sings in his soulful mannner one of my favorite songs "Al Vaiven a mi Carreta". The character of this song is perfect for Ochoa as it laments the life of a field worker. The variety is one of the strong points of this CD as it constantly changes so you never get tired of a particular style, variety IS the spice of life afterall. If you're into Cuban music this is a super collection of songs by some of the best performers. Sierra Maestra knocks your socks off with their beautiful song "El Reloj de Pastora". There is a play on words as they say "Se me paraba", (chorus, mi reloj) as I was in your doorway, fuuny sexual stuff if you speak Spanish. Add this to your Cuban collection, the booklet is superb, complete with a glossary of Cuban music terms and a bilingual biography on each featured artist. This music will have you dancing or at least moving your feet, if not you need your pulse checked.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Compiliation to have
This is a great Compilation of Cuban music specially for anyone who hasn't been exposed to the distinctive sound of Cuba. It interject party salsa beat then the next track would be kinda sad and romantic with undulating drums and melancolic trumpets. Slow or fast you'll find that your hips and feet are doing some pretty strange things once you push play. Bet you never knew that you can dance around your kitchen floor before. Never mind that your spanish is a little shaky. Just read the insert if you must know the meaning of each song, but it is the melody, the salsa beat that will make carry you away. And also the art cover is beautiful to look at. In fact most Putumayo CD have these really beautiful art work, you'd want to collect them all.

4-0 out of 5 stars An awesome collection of modern and classic Cuban songs
I had heard of Putumayo, and as a world music fan, I always wanted to get my hands on one of their collections. I finally got Putumayo Presents: Cuba at a music store in Nashville and I was hooked immediately. Every track is great, but, as a fan of the more fast-paced Latin music, I would have to say that my favorite tracks are "Compositor Confundido" (by one of my favorite Buena Vista estrellas, Ibrahim Ferrer), "Campina," "Sabroso Como el Guarapo," and "Mamí Me Gustó," & "Boliviana" (2 classics). Also worth mentioning is "Al Vaiven de mi Carreta," which demonstrates the emotional oice of Eliades Ochoa (another star of Buena Vista) and "Mecanica de Amor," which is a very great "hip-hop" style song (Hip-Hop has in recent years become very popular in Cuba, I've heard). This disc is definitely a must-have for any Cuban music or worldbeat enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best cuban compilations you'll find
ok, everyone here recommended Sierra Maestra's "El Reloj De Pastora", and while it's good - no doubt about it, my soul has bonded to another track.
it is track no. 6, "Mecanica de Amor", which I deeply regret Amazon not putting a sample of it on this site, just so everyone will become instantly addicted to it as I have. I am listening to it right now. Bliss.
The magic of that song is the use of violins instead of the usual brass instruments. There isn't a trumpet to be found here. as a result the sound is softer, and much richer. I can also say that all my salsero friends here in Israel agree that this is the best track on this CD. my best guy friends crowned it (I quote): "it's a masterpiece!"
other highlights: song no. 8 ("Boliviana", wonderful wonderful harmony), and song no. 5 ("Sabroso Como El Guarapo"). Both feature wonderful flute solos, especially "Boliviana", which is on the jazzier side.
Just buy the CD. Now. ... Read more

Having witnessed the rise of Tango Nuevo, the refurbishing of Argentina's best-known native music by bandoneon maestro Astor Piazzolla, listeners might muse a bit that "New Flamenco" is an odd renovation to the Spanish guitar music's storied traditions. Odd or not, the music is certainly popular. Guitar Greats: The Best of New Flamenco shares the floor with other compilations of contemporary artists working in the tradition, specifically Narada's Viva Flamenco! and its roster of guitarists playing along with keyboards, drums, and other textures. So the "New Flamenco" isn't a burnishing or rootsy exploration in the vein of Piazzolla. Instead, Ottmar Liebert, Strunz & Farah, Oscar Lopez, Luis Villegas, and eight more artists examine on Guitar Greats how Flamenco shakes the hand of pan-Ethnic music, New Age ambience, and--of course--virtuoso guitar playing. Some of the best moments here belong not to Liebert or Strunz & Farah, though. Dan Young & Lawson Rollins sound dizzying and rhythmically potent on "Scorpion," as does Luis Villegas on "Spider Hugs," with its irresistibly parading rhythmic intensity. Guitar Greats will likely sound old hat to many of the music's enthusiasts, but it'll easily win Flamenco converts.--Andrew Bartlett ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure flamenco or not... enjoy it ! Dance in your car!
*Guitar Greats, The Best of New Flamenco* at first sight might look like one of those 'Various Artists' loss leader compilations you see on Info-mercials or UHF stations at two in the morning. Or you might mistake it for the traditional, Segovia version of flamenco.

But NOoooooooooo! This disc is really quite good! It is a fine collection of energetic, up-tempo, well-rendered and well-sequenced songs in the 'nuevo flamenco' style. Contributions from Govi, Young & Rollins, Strunz & Farah, Ottmar Liebert, Nova Menco, Oscar Lopez, and other artists make it first rate.

I'll guarantee it. Most of these tunes will cause you to dance in your car or your office chair, or just plain get up and dance.

My spouse brought it home after hearing it playing in Borders. We soon discovered this is great car-driving music, especially with the sunroof and windows open, hair flowing in the wind.

I recommend you purchase this CD and put it in your player. It will make your house dusting a little more exciting and go a lot faster. Or you can always put on your best peasant girl outfit, clench a rose between your teeth and let the music carry you away...

These 2 months marked my entry into a new genre of musical enchantment. I used to like pop, rock and jazz (still do), but a chance introduction to the romantic and seductive sounds made simply by an acoustic guitar got my motors firing on all cylinders...

I am totally mesmerised and i've fallen in love with the music of the acoustic guitars. I hv. NEVER heard any of these masterful artistes' names ever before in this GREAT album. The music from this album earns 100 stars! (out of five)

    Thereon, I have purchased more CDs than i've previously did in 10 months! In a short two months, i've collected the following albums;

Jesse Cook:- "Free Fall" "Vertigo" and "Gravity"

Ottmar Liebert:- "Innamorare - Summer Flamenco"

Armik:- "Rubia" "Rosas del Amor" and "Gypsy Flame"

    Oscar Lopez:- "Armando's Fire"

Next, I'm planning to purchase a couple from "Govi"... Is this testimony enough that "Guitar Greats - The Best Of New Flamenco" is a superbly GREAT buy?

Its really great, especially after a long day at work - a fabulous way to unwind..it totally transforms your mood. Its soothing and at the same time invigorating, very rarely can something be both.

Also goes well with a glass of wine, with a book, for a nice evening with your partner, almost anything!! Even my 10 month old daughter just loves it!

And, oh yes, the guitar work is stupendous, out of the world - if you are a guitar aficionado, you GOT TO HAVE THIS.

    Worth its weight in gold.

    1-0 out of 5 stars A Lesson
Flamenco solo guitar has always been innovative ever since Ramon Montoya (the father of flamenco solo guitar) started to include classical guitar techniques in the beginning of the 1900's.

Then came Sabicas and Niño Ricardo who by todays standard are considered 'traditional' or 'classic'.

Then in the 70's came Serranito, Paco de Lucia and Manolo Sanlúcar that started to mix influences from other musical styles into flamenco and are the founders to what is modern flamenco solo guitar today.

Countless young guitarists have been influenced by these three guitarists; Tomatito, Vicente Amigo, Gerardo Núñez, Juan Manuel Cañizares.

Just listen to any of the above mentioned guitarists before being duped into buying this poor excuse of a record. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of Heart
This unusual collection of traditional Chinese instrumental music is full of heart and spirit. The melodies are particularly accessible to westerners (although I don't believe that this was intentional. For many people it would not only be a good introduction to the "other side of the globe," but to the "other side" of the self. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Search Has Ended
Look no further. Yes, this is the one you've been searching for. You can play these two discs while stretching, sipping tea, reading, sleeping, walking through nature, or even practicing your calligraphy. If it's made in Austria, it has to be good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exquisite, Elegant, Mystical Oriental Music
Close your eyes and imagine the music that would accompany Chinese landscapes with cultivated and tiered mountainsides, winding rivers through lush, green valleys ... music played on instruments such as, a 7 stringed Chinese dulcimer (huquin), a one-stringed instrument played with a bow (erhu), a bamboo wind instrument (bawoo), a Chinese violin, plus the xiao (Chinese cymbals). This 2 CD set is filled with musical landscapes of exceptional beauty, grace, and oriental elegance. The paradox is 'it has extraordinary simplicity wrapped in subtle complexity.' Think of, a child chasing a butterfly, a rainbow that comes forth after a brief rainshower, wispy clouds that float across the sky, creating paisley patterns ... "simplicity wrapped in subtle complexity"! This unique music has a lyrical poetical quality, which includes harmony, balance, and artistic refinement ... similar to delicate Chinese porcelain, with intricate hand-painted designs.

The titles to some of the pieces suggest the "simplicity and subtle complexity" of the music:
"Purple Bamboo Melody", "Song of the Fisherman", "Rivers and Streams", "Spring Comes to Xiang River", "Spring Water Reflects the Moon", "Lake over the Autumn Moon", and "Hungry Horses Ringing Bells". If calm, soothing, ambient meditative oriental music is what you desire: this double CD set will exceed your expectations! Indeed, I have heard similar music played at Chinese Restaurants & was enormously pleased when I discovered these CDs!

4-0 out of 5 stars what Chinese restaurants should play
Being Chinese, I have been to many Chinese restaurants. Many have elaborate Chinese decor: traditional paintings, fish tanks, statues, and furniture- but *no Chinese music*. I am always dismayed when I hear them play showtunes or worse, pop radio. It just doesn't fit. Hong Kong karaoke doesn't fare much better. Traditional Chinese music such as this CD set is essential for the proper atmosphere.

This music makes good background music. It can be soothing without being boring, having the complexity and direction that New Age music lacks. Most important, it's authentic music, played with authentic instruments. It doesn't pretend to be Chinese, it *is* Chinese. (I was appalled when I heard what passed as Chinese music in the "Chinese" shops at Worlds of Fun.)

Recommend traditional Chinese music like this CD set to the Chinese restaurants near you. (There might be a little confusion about what "classical" means in the title. A better word would be "traditional.") ... Read more
