Take a spicy Cajun tour through Louisiana's bayou country on Choo Choo Boogaloo! The musical scenery includes foot-stompin', two-steppin,' finger poppin' zydeco emblazoned with hot guitar licks, sassy accordion, and a dash of blues thrown in for good measure. Traditional titles, including "Get on Board," "Iko Iko," "Little Red Caboose," and "Cotton Fields," have been well adapted to zydeco style, while "Crawfish Song," "Mardi Gras Mambo," and "Give Me a Squeeze, Please" are right at home in this celebration of Cajun culture. Children will have a wonderful time moving with the new rhythms and exploring the sounds of various instruments used to create the unique zydeco style. --Deborah Moore ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD is SO much fun!
I wish that I could give this CD more than 5 stars! I'm from New Orleans, but my 8-month-old twins are growing up in the Midwest, so it's great to share some authentic Louisiana music with them. And they absoluately ADORE it. Their faces light up and they both start to dance when ChooChoo Boogaloo comes on, and one has even started to 'sing' along. It's also the kind of kids' CD that grownups can love -- very cute, very smart, and lots of fun. I've bought several as presents already. HIGHLY recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best in my son's collection
The first thing my son (age 3-1/2) does when he gets up in the morning is run to the stereo and put in this CD. It is on pretty much all day every day -- has been for about a month -- and I still love it. I love it even more than my Buckwheat Zydeco CD for grown-ups, partly because it has made my son such a music lover (and he can now recognize a number of instruments from having heard the tutorial on Choo Choo Boogaloo), and partly because it's great music. I just bought another copy for a birthday present.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for kids of any age
I bought this for my daughter when she was 3 months old and would play it daily. When she was left with my husband while I was out she started to fuss, and as soon as he put this album on she quieted down and smiled! This is such a great album for kids, and for as many times as I've listened to it, I still love it. I wish there were more to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
The song selection, recording quality, and performances are all fabulous. Our eight-month old loves it almost as much as his thirty-something parents. We listen to so many times that now we're planning to attend a cajun/zydeco festival! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars My children LOVE this CD! Replaced Ralph's World
We have been huge Ralph's World fans, listening to Bottom of the Sea or Ralph's World OVER AND OVER AND OVER again. We received this for Christmas and now my 3-yr old son says " Let's listen to the Choo Choo Music!". And my 19-mth old jumps up and down excitedly. Their favorite is the first song. They could listen to that one exclusively- but I need a bit more variety than one song. :)
As an intro to each song, there is the conductor speaking, explaining the the Cajun or Louisiana influence on the following song. The kids barely pay attention to that at this point, but I find it interesting.
We will definitely be buying another Buckwheat Zydeco CD for ourselves soon and will buy this one as gifts for all our toddler friends.
Don't worry, RW isn't out of the picture yet. I sneak him in because I love the CDs so much. So do the kids. :) ... Read more

When I saw the low price on this CD, I wasn't sure if the quality would be great. Turns out "Zydeco's Greatest Hits" is definitely danceable. A good mix of some of zydeco's masters, including Boozoo Chavis and Nathan & the Cha-Chas. I only wish it had some Rosie Ledet as well. The sound quality is good. ... Read more

Inspired by 1992's 'Til Their Eyes Shine: The Lullaby Album, an all-female collection of sleepy-time songs for children, Daddies Sing Good Night proves that men are no less tender in nurturing their wee ones. Or at least that's true of these men--including Jesse Winchester, Doc Watson, Peter Rowan, and the late Townes Van Zandt--who wrote the songs for their own offspring, and, in their day jobs, rank among the finest practitioners of folk, country, and bluegrass. In guiding their young charges to dreamworld, these fathers visit exotic lands, lonesome prairies, and even the wide heavens on the gossamer wings of horses. Parental listeners will likely detour into the recesses of their own hearts, in exploring the special bond and soothing strength of fatherhood. --Alanna Nash ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Faithfully puts my son to sleep
Though I'm not a country music fan, I enjoy listening to this CD, too. It's very soothing, and the songs are hearfelt with some truly precious lines. "Green-pea toes" comes to mind, along with "today you have the hands of a baby, tomorrow the hands of a lady."

5-0 out of 5 stars Tender Fathers Sweetly Sing
Such a wonderful collection of loving songs, sung mostly by bluegrass and folk singers inspired by their own children. The words and melodies are both soothing to our baby and also so moving to her parents. Truly our favorite lullaby cd-- I would buy it for any parents who like good, folksy music and who have tender hearts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our *favorite* lullaby CD!
This is absolutely our favorite lullaby CD. Adults can enjoy the music as much as children can! We played this CD on the way home from the hospital with our son, and love it as much now that he is 6 months old as we did then. Some of the songs, such as "Little One," bring tears to my eyes, while my husband has a great time singing "My Little Buckaroo," to our son. A fantastic collection of songs!

5-0 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite
The baby might be tired of this one, but, I can't stop listening to it. A must own for babies and parents who hate banal "baby" music.

5-0 out of 5 stars I never get tired of this CD!
I love, love, love this CD! I don't care for those typical, sappy lullaby CDs, but this CD is different. It has a wonderfully earthy, bluegrass feel to it. I get teary-eyed every single time I hear "Little One," and songs like "My Little Buckaroo" are so much fun! Mommies and Daddies both will love this CD. ... Read more

Thank Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural and his group Buckwheat Zydeco for the many contemporary zydeco releases now available. It was Buckwheat's major-label breakthrough record, On a Night Like This, that brought this rural Louisiana dance music into the mainstream, at least for a time, and his zesty repertoire that won new legions of fans. His accordion prowess also liberated the instrument from its polka-band image. This excellent collection traces Buckwheat's trajectory from 1979 to 1988, peaking with his rollicking accordion-powered party poppers "Ma 'Tit Fille" and "Zydeco Honky Tonk." His roots are covered, too, with zydeco pioneer Clifton Chenier's "Hot Tamale Baby" and rural-themed numbers like "I Bought a New Raccoon." There's also his collaboration with Eric Clapton--E.C. reprising the ripping solo of his "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad." But with Buckwheat, love's rarely sad. His deliciously uptempo, two-stepping blend of swamp-funk, rock, and R&B is a tonic for misery of any kind. --Ted Drozdowski ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is It
While I'm more of a traditionalist-a la BeauSoleil-I can't get enough of the Zydeco fusion sound of Buckwheat. This man and his band just keep bringing it on and bringing people to their feet.

I've seen Buckwheat live twice-once in New Orleans and once in Lafayette-and the atmosphere is classic Cajun with a great mix of Zydeco.

Buckwheat is the undisputed King of Zydeco hands down and I know you'll enjoy this compilation if you have any love of Louisiana music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Buckwheat Zydeco
Blues and zydeco hybred if you like both you can't loose with old Buckwheat! He really has his own sound, if you heard him before you already know that. This is a best of and you will have to decide if this blend is for you. Every album is fairly consistant, you might tire of this but you don't have to worry about big let downs when some wild notion results in something you would never buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellant!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND - IF NOT FAMILIAR W/ZYDECO OR BUCKWHEAT ZYDECO IN PARTICULAR - THIS IS A WONDERFUL INTRODUCTION! IF YOU'RE NOT NEW BUT WOULD LIKE TO COMPLETE OR ADD TO COLLECTION - THIS ALBUM WILL DEFINETLY COMPLIMENT! WILL DEFINETLY ROUNDOUT ANY COLLECTORS NEEDS FOR ZYDECO!

Beausoleil may have originated as Cajun purists, but Cajun music itself has always been a rich, creolized mixture combining Southern country and folk music with traditional songs from France's Brittany region. Revealing the band's own increasingly wide-ranging stylistic borrowings over the course of the 15-year period it encompasses, Bayou Deluxe includes everything from raving remakes of some early material ("Le Jig Français") to a mazurka from the Seychelles ("Chez Seychelles") to a French duet with Richard Thompson ("Sur le Pont de Lyon"). It also includes plenty of the incandescent two-steps and waltzes, as well as a heartbreaking ballad or two. --Richard Gehr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ex took CD, this is my second
Ever since I saw Belizaire the Cajun and fell in love with Armand Assante, I have been in love with Beausoleil/Michael Ducet. The Music is wonderfully Cajun and my favoriet songs from other soundtracks are on this CD. When I lost it to my ex I knew I was going to have to get another because of all the wonderful music. I never thought I would fall in love with a style of music like Cajun, but Doucet is the best by far. True Cajun stylings and the French Canadien lyrics make this CD the best of all the Beausoleil compilation CDs. I have others....I probably will own more. A must buy for someone looking to dip their musical ears into something as unique as Cajun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bayou Deluxe: The Best of the Best

Mardi Gras remains one of America's most other-worldly cultural riots, never more exotic than in the beaded, feathered spectacle of New Orleans' black "Indian" tribes. Each year they stir the city's African, Native American, and European influences into an intoxicating gumbo roiling with syncopated rhythms and coded with their own sense of the festival's competitive spirit. It's that tradition that explains this deliriously infectious 1976 project, which magnifies the Tchoupitoulas' fanny-shaking bravado with a formidable studio crew helmed by producer Allen Toussaint, who enlisted the Neville Brothers and the Meters to give these tracks a kinetic R&B push-and-pull. With the Nevilles' choral vocals fleshing out traditional chants, this is funky prancing of the highest order, from the infectious "Brother John" to a ripe remake of the Meters' "Hey Pocky A-Way." One need only hear the tough bragging of "Meet the Boys on the Battlefront," with its promise that "the Wild Tchoupitoulas gonna stomp some rump," to get the outrageous picture. --Sam Sutherland ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Big Chief says buy this handsome CD
The only complaint I have of this otherwise perfect New Orleans album is that it is too short, only 30 minutes or so. Every song is Big Easy Mardi Gras fun though. The Meters(who made and still make great funky solo albums) provide the music, the soon to be Neville brothers provide backing vocals, produced by Allen Toussaint, and the Tchoupitoulas(you'll know how to pronounce it after hearing them chant it) chant the lead vocals. Party music cajun style, southern tribal funk and all with a great sense of humor and fun. The Wild Tchoupitoulas along with Prof. Longhair and of course Dr. John belong in all record collections of any spicy depth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tchoupitoulas Stomp Rump !
Good goshamighty it's good to see this out on CD. This magnificent testament to the power of the Mardi Gras Indian music scene featured all four Neville Brothers performing together for the first time. Throw in The Meters fonky rhythm section and guitarist and you've got one heck of a backing band. The Tchoupitoulas themselves were older gentlemen, most of whom, their leader and the Neville's uncle George Landry included, have passed away since the record was cut. But luckily for us, in addition to spawning The Neville Brothers band, they left behind this butt burnin' document to remember them by. Do the songs all sound kind of the same? Yeah, but what a sound it is! New Orleans funky gumbo and war chants that'll have your party guests up and dancing in milliseconds. Put away the good china. Warning! Play this one in your car and your right foot starts to tap to that irresistable beat and pretty soon your car's doin' a stop and go rhumba down the road, and you'll have to explain why to the state trooper. But if he's got ears at all he'll hear it for himself and tear up the ticket. It's contagious after all. This one's another desert island disc cuz on my island we like to groove.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Killer Dance Music!
When I first heard this as I wandered through the Harvard Coop, I thought my feet would stomp a hole in the floor, and I bought it at top speed. 25 years later, I am still stomping! You NEED this. it is music to which to go crazy, in the best possible way, and I suggest you wear feathers and paint. Be careful you do not hurt yourself dancing.

4-0 out of 5 stars JOYOUS BLEND OF STYLES
Although they're from New Orleans, The Wild Tchoupitoulas sounds almost like a hybrid of World Music and R&B. The excellent rhythm section drives the music in a wild mutation of New Orleans R&B, funk and what sounds like early Jamaican influences. The harmonies are great throughout and the songs all blend into each other in an undulating festive stream of sound. When listening, I often recall early R&B like Sugarboy Crawford's "Jock-O-Mo" that later became the standard "Iko Iko." But it's rough and raw vocals, very unlike the polished sound of the Neville Brothers on eg. their version of "Bird on a Wire." This is a joyful and seamless blend of styles that lifts the spirit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great voices and harmonies
An amazing blend of voices that hit the right notes every time. Each song is unique and what a slow build-up some of them have with a tremendous finale of frenzied musical mayhem. Truely superb! A must for anybody's collection if you enjoy bluesy/zydeco. But it now!! ... Read more

Labels run the inherent risk of trivializing or marginalizing a region's music when they attempt to create a compilation. And yet Putumayo, which has made a musical-lifestyle name for itself by producing a bundle of these types of collections, does itself mighty proud with Louisiana Gumbo. Drawing from various statewide sources and time periods, Gumbo celebrates rather than appropriates. Merging blues, jazz, Cajun, and Creole influences along with country-inflected rock, R&B, and piano in the styles of boogie-woogie and fast-pumping Ferriday chording, this group of selections is a magnificent representation of some of Louisiana's smartest and tastiest offerings. From zydeco king Clifton Chenier to ivory tickler James Booker and Tipitina regulars the Neville Brothers, Gumbo is served up dirty, dark, and delicious. Husband-wife duo Carol Fran and Clarence Hollimon rear back to holler and hammer through "Door Poppin'," Eddie Bo puts bad-ass funk and swing to "Piano Roll," and Johnny Adams's "It Ain't the Same Thing" is as fine as swamp-rompin' R&B gets. --Paige La Grone ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a 'sleeper' !
I don't remember buying this CD, but I certainly remember the first time I played it. It is a fantastic collection of Louisiana Blues and Zydeco. Particularly like 'Festis', but really all of it is good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific
This is a wonderful collection of blues, soul and R&B and zydeco from New Orleans and the bayous of Louisiana. And a great introduction to lesser known artists who really deserve to be heard, like Charles Sheffield. But of course there are also the well known artists, such as the Neville Brothers and Clifton Chenier. This album is guaranteed to get your feet tapping. The 24 page booklet includes an essay about Louisiana and it's music, and a page devoted to each song and it's artist, and photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars As Good As It Gets....
Hot & Spicy, Tasty & Fulfilling.....just what gumbo is supposed to be! First heard in a little local boutique, I was shakin my shimmie from the first song on and just HAD to buy it! Makes me wish I were strollin down d'bayou or scoffing up some of Tipatina's finest right now. I've bought several copies to give as gifts (some weren't all that excited until they gave it a listen; now those people are turning others onto it). I've given a couple other zy CD's a try but like the man says, "It ain't the same thang".......buy it and enjoy the Big Easy in your own easy chair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crazy for Gumbo
I heard this CD in a gift shop in Lewes, DE, and found myself dancing in the aisles. It is as much blues as what you might think of as traditional cajun-style music. It reminded my friend and me of Etta James, but with assorted artists and great blues stylings. I can't wait to have my hands on my own copy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Acadienne At Its Finest!
The songs on this album with the exception of Big Mamou are old beautiful traditional Cajun songs. Waylon does an excellent job at playing these songs and keeping them fairly authentic sounding. Waylon should be given a medal for preserving these old songs and giving them a modern-quality recording. Waylon does not exclude modern zydeco either in Big Mamou. This song will make you want to jump up and do the fais-do-do. If you dig Cajun music at all, this album is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars This collection of Cajun music is just too cool for words!!!
Okay, okay, you haven't encountered much of Cajun music? Here's the place to start. Twelve catchy numbers, most with lyrics in Cajun French, brighten this fine record by Waylon Thibodeaux. They're lively, enjoyable, and make you want to dance or at least enjoy more whatever you might be doing while listening. Thibodeaux does the definitive "Jolie Blonde" in this CD, and has several great ones such as "Grand Texas," "Grand Mamou," "Je Veux le Marier," and "Paradis Two-step."

I gawrontee, cher! These are as good as they come. Crank up the volume when you play this CD loud, and have a nice plate of jambalaya with a bottle of Abita Turbo Dog to go along. Laissez le bon temps rouler!!!! ... Read more

Slim Harpo, Dr. John the Night Tripper, Tony Joe White … one can't help but flash on those illustrious practitioners of swamp music, be it blues, rock, or pop, when listening to CC Adcock's latest effort. As with all of the above, Layayette, Louisiana's Adcock makes music that's dense, damp, and malodorous as a Baton Rouge bog. What's so welcome about Lafayette Marquis it that it arrives decades after the heyday of the Excello sound and the rock & roll offspring it inspired, and long after the genre needed a shot in the arm. From the rhythmic opener "Y'all'd Think She'd Be Good 2 Me" through the voodoo creep "Slanoshotz N' Boom-R-Angz" and the gently rolling closer "Between the Lies," Adcock is at home with swamp sounds as a bayou trapper. It helps that he has the connections and inclination to enlist a few savvy vets to help out, including the late producer Jack Nitzsche (the reverberating "Stealin' All Day" is the last track he helmed), but it's pretty clear that Adcock is right at home with these grooves. --Steven Stolder ... From the get-go, Putumayo Presents Zydeco is the down-and-dirtiest most-rockin' Saturday night at a sweaty bayou dance hall or juke joint a non-native can experience. Born of the Creole community in Louisiana's backwaters and moving outward to Texas and California, Zydeco bumps, grinds, and is a wang dang doodle of a big time. Youngblood Keith Frank & the Soileau Zydeco Band rip through "Co Fa" with their trademark double-kick beat, the low-end-amped-up sound making heartbreak sound like a raunchy roll in the hay. Rosie Ledet's "You're No Good for Me" is a wailer for all lovers scorned, featuring thudding bass, wiry guitar lines, and sax in a one-upmanship dance with her accordion. Beau Jocque growls, Jude Taylor trades accordion licks with his band's organist, and Queen Ida reigns supreme on "My Girl Josephine." As the Creole Farmers sing on the opening cut, "We gonna party 'til the cows come home!" --Paige La Grone ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Smoking!
I'm a native northerner who didn't know beans about Zydeco until I went to a Swamp Romp festival and was blown away by BooZoo's Magic Sounds. This CD was recommended to me as a great introduction to zydeco. It has become my favorite CD. I have since bought many other zydeco CDs but none as good. Rosie Ledet's "You're No Good For Me" is just killer! Even my 7-year-old asks to hear it over and over. I've "discovered" many great Zydeco musicians through this CD, such as Nathan and the Cha Chas. This music definitely makes you put your troubles on the back burner and dance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Putumayo Presents: Zydeco
While alot of the tracks don't contain that rythem that I think of as "zydeco", it's still a collection of great Louisiana music. My husband, an honest to goodness Creole, related to Queen Ida, listens to this non-stop. What more can I say?

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes you want to get up and DANCE!
My first Zydeco experience took place a few years ago when Queen Ida visited the Twin Cities. Leroux is the best band of all time. I saw them personally at City Stages in Bham,AL this year and they rocked my entire face off. I think they are the most underrated band of all time. I say they should go on a reunion tour. If they hadn't broken up they could have gone down in history as the greatest band of he universe.

As a music fan with hundreds of CD from a wide range of artists, I must admit that this is my favorite album of all time, one that I never tire of playing. It's the kind of music that gets better each time you hear it. This prolific group is perhaps the most underated band ever to record on a major label. As they toured hard, dancing outside of superstardom in the late 70's and early 80's, they wrote, produced, and recorded an incredible catalog of music that ran the gamut from cajun rock, to pop, to soaring power metal/wall of sound ballads - all of it full of intelligent lyrics, melodic bass lines, crisp guitar licks, and some of the best three part harmonies ever put to tape. The musicianship is unmatched. Although Capitol and RCA have been reluctant to re-release the four original gems that are collecting dust in their vaults, you can relive the excitement with this collection, which has excellent production values, thanks to the quality of the original recordings, and Razor & Tie's great digital transfer. Further collections are available at laleroux.com. Regardless of your tastes in music, I think you will be impressed, if not amazed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Always a Bridesmaid
LeRoux was and still is an excellent band. Over the past few years, almost all of their individual albums have also been released on CD. (You just have to work a bit to find them...small releases on small labels. The last unreleased on CD album, "Keep The Fire Burnin'" arrives on CD for the first time in July 2002!) For all but the most ardent fans, like myself, this compilation is the best. It's an excellent sampler of a band that spent years supporting a number of major touring acts, but never seemed to ascend to the limelight themselves. In my humble opinion, the only glaring omission from this collection is "Mystery" from the 1980 album "Up", but beyond that this is an excellent and very representative collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not all of their best...but close
For those of us in the South who loved their music, this collection simply teases us. It is too bad the origional 2 albums are not available on CD, because they were fabulous! Too bad LP's don't last forever, since mine are over 20 years old, and they sound like it. For those who love this band, this is all that is left, and this CD was wonderful. For those who remember the origional LP's, this collection falls short of representing a fabulous band with incomparable talent. We miss you Jeff Pollard.

No independent label has surveyed a wider, deeper expanse of the American musical grain than Rounder Records has done since 1971. In celebrating the label's 30th anniversary, this budget-priced anthology presents 68 gems from the archives without duplicating a single artist. Rather than a linear progression through time or genre, the four-disc set hopscotches all over the musical map, from the blues of Mississippi Fred McDowell to the bluegrass of Alison Krauss, from the Texas country of Jimmie Dale Gilmore to the Celtic fiddle of Natalie MacMaster. Some of the juxtapositions are a little jarring: the Mardi Gras chants of Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias give way to the Hawaiian guitars of the Tau Moe Family, while the soulful groove of Walter "Wolfman" Washington leads into the Klezmer Conservatory Band. But listeners whose tastes are as eclectic as Rounder's will find the set a treasure trove of discovery. --Don McLeese ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Done Compilation - with a Caveat
This is a typically well organized Rounder compilation, with some impressive artists included. However, it should be noted that these are interpretations of older "roots" tunes done by Rounder label artists, rather than the originals. As such, Scott Billington, who wrote the liner notes, does himself (and us) a bit of a disservice by referring dismissively to the original versions of these tunes as a "scratchy collection of old recordings". Were it not for that very "scratchy collection", this four-disc set would not be here for us to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to American Music
Rounder Records has always done an incredible job of putting together compilations and making the music sound alive. This collection celebrates 30 years of Rounder, and is a great overview of the label, as well as a taster for anyone looking to check out some truly alternative music. The mixture is very eclectic; much like American culture, blending and weaving through musical styles. The set features Blues, Folk, Cajun, Bluegrass, Celtic and much more.

A highly recommended listening experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Roots Music State of the Union.
Think of this as an update on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. Showing up on the heels of the wide success of the "O Brother..." soundtrack and just before the PBS American Roots Music series, this is a worthy collection of samples of the work of contemporary artists working in the earthy music forms from whence it all sprang. From acapella gospel to zydeco with old-time, bluegrass, blues, New Orleans brass and Hawaiian tunes sandwiched in between. What can you say? It's Rounder, for Pete's sake! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Time Around!
If THIS tells you anything, I owned this CD up until last summer when I lost it ... I simply HAVE to have it back (it's felt like a part of me has been missing!!) and so just completed my order here on-line.

Considering I have been born and raised here in Wisconsin (about as far away from the bayous of LA as you can get!), this must say something for this band and their incredibly rich sound with roots buried deep into Acadian (<< Cajun) heritage.

I've listened to dozens of other cajun bands, and have purchased several "Zydeco" CD collections, but none compare with Beausoleil.

If you're looking for a real cultural "shift" (even if it's just in your car on your way to work!), then this is the one to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laissez les bon temps rouler! (Let the good times roll!)
Living in south Louisiana affords me the luxury of being exposed to a vast array of awesome Cajun bands. I have several bands that I'll see at the drop of a crawfish, but BeauSoleil is and always will be my favorite. I've been to concerts throughout the region from Lafayette to New Orleans and the music and performances are outstanding.

This is a smashing collection of both vocal and instrumental compositions from a group of very talented, energetic and honed musicians. Michael Doucet is a standout who has produced solo projects, although his best work is with the band singin' and fiddlin' and passing a good time- especially on stage.

BeauSoleil has been on the Cajun music scene, to my knowledge, since the early '70s. Unlike Zydeco and fusion bands, they play a more traditional form of Cajun music that has been 'instrumental' in preserving the Acadian heritage of Louisiana in that most of the songs are sung in Cajun French.

This CD is well worth the price for a truly uplifting experience of great Cajun music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such Happy, Feel-Good music!
BeauSoleil's music has you tapping your toes, then getting up to move to their music! Love the vocals, love the instrumentals! They are just fantastic! This IS the Best of BeauSoleil!

5-0 out of 5 stars Didn't like Cajun until I heard Beausoleil!
Yes! I didn't think, that is to say, that I was a Cajun fan until I heard Beausoleil. They must be counted among the most exciting groups making music today, from any genre. Michael Doucet is absolutely a crazy man with his fiddle, when the mood takes them, and the drive of their rhythmic rapport is truly remarkable when Beausoleil is at their best. Of course, this album is put together to showcase exactly that. There are instrumentals as well as vocal performances, and I would guarantee that they lift the spirits and move the feet. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Born to Fiddle
Everytime I think of fiddle music, I think of Doug. I loved to watch him play the fiddle. He could play that fiddle anyway you can imagine, like it was a part of his body. He is the true king of cajun fiddle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Always a fan
Growing up, my father loved his country music. I preferred rock and roll (and still do). Dad made me listen to Kershaw and I have enjoyed him ever since. Thank heavens for Amazon that I can find the music I enjoy when I want to spike my spirits.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Doug.......
My first exposure to Doug Kershaw's cajun fiddle was on a trip to New Orleans when I was in college. Wasn't born in Louisiana and never lived there, but his Oklahoman just really loved his music and his superb fiddle playing. Bought my vinyl recordings back in '77 and over the years those records went astray so it was good to reacquaint myself Kershaw's music.

Don't claim to be a music critic, but I know what I like and I like this CD. This is a very good CD, with my favourite being "(Had Not Been For) Sally Jo". I do recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars This guy is good!
My sister bought me my first Doug Kershaw LP (Devil's Elbow) for my birthday back in the early '70s. She nor I had ever heard of him. She liked the album cover. I've been a fan ever since. This guy sings and plays like he means it! It's true, it's real, and it's damn good!

One of Cajun music's chief qualities is its cheerfulness; it's impossible to listen to it and stay depressed. This same quality makes it perfect music for kids, and Papillion succeeds admirably, from the rollicking gaiety of "Down on the Bayou" to the zydeco rhythm of "Zydeco Dancing" to the bluesy shuffle of "Sugar Bee." Most of the songs, as one might expect, will move the tiniest feet, from "Oh Papillion!" to "Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!" (which means, unsurprisingly, "Let the good times roll") to "Let's Go!" There are slower songs as well; "Fais Do Do" ("Go to Sleep") is a lullaby, and the highly recognizable "You Are My Sunshine" closes the CD. Between musical tracks, Papillion takes his young listeners on a journey through the Louisiana bayou, with an odd French lesson or two along the way. Recommended! --Genevieve Williams ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cajun for Kids...and Grownups!
This CD is infectious. The songs are great and the narration in between does well to teach both child and grownup alike about the cajun culture and music. The lyrics and music are so catchy even adults end up singing along. My 5 year old daughter's (and my personal) favorites are "Cocodrie" and "Crawfish!" It is a great CD to keep in the car! We have had it for probably four years and still love to listen to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aieee! This CD has it all!
I have never taken the time to write a review. But, as I say, this CD has it all... pleasant music for people of ALL AGES, and the most delightful monologues which include discussion of Cajun culture, and language instruction (French Acadian dialect). Papillion is a charmer, and Cajun for Kids is a pleasure to listen to. Many of adult friends who don't have children buy copies for themselves because it is a treasure. Papillion puts everyone in a good mood. I wish there were many more CDs like it. Laissez les bontemps rouler!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Kids and I love It!
My kids (ages 4 1/2 and 6 1/2)and I just love this CD. We listen to it on drives all the time. We all sing along. The narrations between songs are very interesting. They've helped my children learn something about the Cajun heritage. I highly recommend this if you want something different and fun. But then again, my kids also enjoy the Beatles and Santana so they enjoy a wide variety of quality musical styles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cajun artist Papillion leads us in a Fais Do Do!
Papillion's "Cajun for Kids" is the Music for Little People album I have enjoyed the least and it is still a really good album for kids. I must not like Cajun music as much as I would have thought. Like most of the excellent albums in this series we alternate between songs and narration, as Papillion introduces each song and tells us some stories from Cajun culture. Adults will probably recognize only a couple of the songs, "Jambalaya" and "You Are My Sunshine," but the fun about these albums is hearing new songs from different cultures. The Music for Little People series is absolutely great. Apply any and all adjectives that come to mind. In fact, if you do not have children, plan on having some just so you can pick up all of these albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful! More Papillion Available on his Web Site!
My daughter and I love Papillion's Music!
Cajun for Kids is absolutely Delightful.
We have listened to this album for 3 years now and it is still her favorite.
I find that she has (in a way) grown with the CD... first when she was 2 she responded to the beat and joyful nature of the music... she began "Shouting" along with Papillion! As she has grown I find her listening more carefully to the songs and stories and asking me questions or telling me about her favorite parts. I love that this is quality music that I enjoy as an adult and that Papillion provides many levels for Children to relate to and grow into and discover new treasures in the songs and stories. We were tickled to discover Papillion's colorful and interesting ... and to Purchase ... Papillion's New CD "Hugs and Smiles!" This CD is just as much of a treat as Cajun for Kids!

Cajun music might not need a tribute--after all, it has held its own andremained popular for a very long time now--but the music on this disc isglittering enough to shine in any company. Ann Savoy (the grande dame of Cajunmusic who assembled this project) andLinda Ronstadt pair upto gorgeous effect on two songs,Richard Thompson offershis own particular edgy style to "Les Flammes d'Enfer,"Nick Lowe soundsconvincingly Arcadian on "Arrette Pas la Musique," andMaria McKee brings atransparent soulfulness to her contributions. Surprisingly, however, no onetackles the Cajun anthem, "Jolie Blonde." There are plenty of other bignames in the collection, with formerCreedence ClearwaterRevival frontman John Fogerty standing out on the classic "Diggy DiggyLo"--but then his former band always featured the bayou influence. Ironically, however, it's the two instrumental cuts by the anonymous band of Cajun all-starmusicians that come across best, showing that even when the stars come out toplay, there's never a complete substitute for authenticity. These American rootsare strong indeed. --Chris Nickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS ALBUM!
I don't understand a word of french but it does not matter! Listen to it for the voices and the music!. Everyone on it does a great job! Of note, Linda Ronsadt, Ann Savoy and Patty Griffin have hauntingly beautiful voices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Fine Tribute Album
The previous reviewer (Erik North) hit it right on the nose - this is an excellent compilation of Cajun songs done by mostly non Cajun artists. The Annie Savoy/Linda Ronstadt duets and Maria McKee cuts are worth the price of the album alone.

Who cares that they don't do French well? To most people I know who have bought the album (and they are huge fans of Louisiana music styles), these songs sound just right.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good cd
This is a fun cd. Nice to listen to even if you don't understand the words. Who cares if the singers french isn't that great, the music makes up for it. If you enjoy cajun then buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars AH-EEEEIY!!!
The trick Ann Savoy has managed with this album is to both honor the traditions of the rich Cajun music heritage AND give some new twists and perspectives via perfect choices of non-Cajun artists to perform the songs. Whether John Fogerty or Richard Thompson or Linda Ronstadt, the singers manage to get inside the songs -- even though they're all in French, which is the ONLY way this material can be sung. And the mix of lively two-steps, stately waltzes and sad ballads covers the whole breadth of Cajun material and life. This is the perfect introduction to the music and culture for anyone even remotely curious, but also a strong addition to collections of devoted Cajun aficianados.

5-0 out of 5 stars WooHoo!
What a wonderful CD! It sure makes me wanna dance. What Variety! I doesn't seem to run together like some cajun albums! I'm going to buy another! ... Read more
