4-0 out of 5 stars mandolin Italiano
This was what it said mandolins. Good sound and quite authentic
almost like the Plazas of Roma and Napoli. One of the better cds of Italian music.

This is a very good CD of typical Italian mandolin music, perfect dinner music for an Italian dinner. With over seventy minutes of music, it shouldn't run out while you're still enjoying your espresso. ... Read more

Including contributions from Tex-Mex power folkie Tish Hinojosa, Cuban opera diva Clara Alonso, and Nelie Lebrón Robles, lead singer of Paracumbé, an Afro-Puerto Rican outfit, Latin Lullaby is a richly moving encounter with dream-inducing tunes sung in Spanish. Drawing on the relatively new folk customs of Latin America, this collection features elegant guitar noodling, classical orchestration, a cappella intimacy, and straight-ahead guitar and voice lullaby, as on "Duermete Mi Nino" ("Sleep My Child"), Venezuela's national anthem. Also present are progressively traditional ballads of parental love and protection, adult concerns, and gently rootsy narratives detailing the everyday responsibilities of child rearing. The latter is exemplified by Mili Bermejo's "La Cuna de Tu Hijo" ("The Cradle of Your Child"), in which a proud papa labors over crafting a customary baby bed, as well as by Cuban pop star Xiamantha Laugart's cheeky medley about a mother's negligence and a dancing baby. --Paige La Grone ... 5-0 out of 5 stars My baby's favorite CD
This CD is my baby's favorite since he was only a week old. It is so soothing to be put to sleep to and the songs are so melodic and a welcome change from those clangy anoying music box type music. This is real music you would listen to yourself for a nice hot bath. The songs are easy to learn and sing with your child weather or not you are a spanish speaking family. It was a nice way for my baby to learn Spanish and reenforce his language in the home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Sleepytime Music
I bought this CD for my daughter when she was just a couple of weeks old. She's now 3 mos. old and won't go to sleep unless we play it for her. Sometimes I can hum the "Senora Santana" song to her and she falls right to sleep. I highly recommend this CD

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful CD
My baby loves this CD- it makes him sooo sleepy. It makes us sleepy too! There is one song that is a little "upbeat" and not really "lullaby-like" but I would still give it 5 stars. The spanish lyrics are beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic, Soul-Searching Music
This CD is incredible -- my infant son was lulled to sleep by it, and it calmed him when nothing else could. Well, I missplaced the CD for about a year and a half, had another baby during that time, and found it today while I was doing a deep cleaning of our house. I popped the CD in, and my son (now three years old) sat there enchanted. I just now rocked him to sleep like I used to while listening to it, and it brought back a flood of heart-warming memories. Then I put my infant daughter to sleep, and it was touching to see her fall asleep to it, too. The songs touch your very soul, especially A La Nanita Nana.

5-0 out of 5 stars My baby loves this CD!
My baby boy, who is now 9.5 months old, was adopted at 7 months from Latin America. We listen to this CD every night, and before each nap. Every time I put it on, his eyes get huge, and he is mesmerized by the music. He listens to it very calmly for about 15 minutes, and then drifts off to sleep. I really like it, too. It's very, very calming. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
The compositions herein are comparable to Beethoven in terms of their ability to evoke emotion. However, unlike Beethoven, they are simple and sublime and retain a close connection to nature that is characteristic of all Native American music. I especially like track #15 with its grave and intricate beauty. This is now my favorite song.

5-0 out of 5 stars Para alegrarte el dia

5-0 out of 5 stars Que joya! This is a classic...
Those who live in New York City or who have traveled extensively through it may have encountered a number of musical groups that play Andean flute music. (Alas, I've seen these great musicians in other locations as well - just using NYC as my reference point!) If the musicians happen to be selling an album other than their own, hopefully it's this recording. Chances are, you can get a spectacular price for it right here on Amazon.com, even if it's a used copy from a marketplace seller. Go for it. Here is an album you can play without skipping around for favorites. Each selection is an absolute joy. I'm especially keen on 'Desdenosa,' and there's also the ever-popular 'El Condor Pasa,' the tune of which was later used by Simon and Garfunkel on one of the songs from their Greatest Hits. A word for this music: evocative. Whether you're into pop music or are an ardent scholar of global folk music, this generous selection of tunes is a rare gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Legend of the Andeans
Although I can't see the names of the quena(Andes Flute) players, the players seemed to be at the state of virtuoso. The virtuosity of the players are more than exactly expressing the deep sorrows & laments of the Andeans. It never fails in maintaining the sad tones even when the rhythm is swinging. The legend of the Andeans is coming to my mind, not the music!

5-0 out of 5 stars Andes Rocks!

5-0 out of 5 stars *BEST* Traditional Music CD of Andes/S.America/Incas
Heard Inkuyu's "Land of the Incas" in a "Natural Wonders" Store about 15 years ago and it has been my favorite CD of South America music ever since. The traditional instruments, rhythms and melodies are played with authenticity and joyful exuberance. The liner notes are superb for interpreting the history and origin of the songs. Truly ancient rituals, festivals, and ordinairy life of the Incas come alive in the imagination of the listener. One is transported to another time and culture.

Music in the the diablada, kantu, saya, yaravi, huayao, carnaval, and San Jacinto, rhythms played on the panpipes, quenas, and stringed instruments transmit the energy, beauty, flow of life, joy, sadness and harmony of this unique part of the world. If you can not afford a trip to the Andes Mountains to hear the traditional music of the hidden villages live ... this is the next best thing! Erika Borsos (erikab93)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful mood uplifter
In this album Inkuyo plays a medley of traditional and contemporary compositions with traditional Andean instruments (flute, panpipes, guitar and drums). The tunes are mostly joyful with a few melancholy ones. The music, which is purely instrumental (except for one track),is through and through traditional with no concessions made to New Age or Pop styles.

It is however my opinion that Inkuyo has removed some of the rough edges of popular Andean music to better please our Western ears, at least this is what I feel when I compare the songs on this cd with other folk-music from the Andes that I have. But this is an improvement , not an impoverishment.

The quality of the recording is outstanding and the music a real delight for the ear and the heart. Besides, this is a very long cd:68 minutes! And unlike other albums that only have one or two good songs, every single track of "Land of the Incas" is beautiful and worth listening to. If you like Peruvian music or are looking for music to lift up your spirits, this is definetely a great buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great CD to play along to.
I have been learning to play the panflute for a few months, so I am always on the lookout for new panflute music to play along to. This
CD is by far the best performed and liveliest panflute CD that I have found, and I am having great fun playing along to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars UPLIFTING!
This disk will carry you to the Andes! I normally only buy classical music (Beethoven-Schubert-Mozart etc) but Inkuyo is also in my collection and its pure, delightfull sounds create a happy "change of pace"

5-0 out of 5 stars Magical
I do not know why I am so drawn to this music. As far as I know none of my ancestors were from anywhere close to the Andes. But when I listen to this CD I am transported to lush green valleys through which clear rivers tumble, and above which tower majestic peaks. This music carries me away, and that (in my opinion) is what music is for.

The fact that the recording quality is superb doesn't hurt, either. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Una selección variada de la Nueva Canción Chilena!

4-0 out of 5 stars Forgotten treasure from El Dorado
Numerous South and Central American folk albums have flooded stores in the past decade as our hunger for the exotic grows, too many to count. Even the number of albums alone named El Condor Pasa can be confusing and distracting. What if someone were to tell you to ignore them all except this one?

This is the album lost in the shuffle of Peruvian, Argentinian and Paraguay music that would be a shame to have missed. Don't believe me? Click on the download samples above and you will hear music that has the heart and soul of the Indian and Mestizo musicians who peformed for the recording. Still don't believe me? Compare the music to any of the other South American folk albums mass produced; feel the rythm and tempo that comes from only those who have passion for their music and its history. There are no lackluster performances on the entire album. Where other albums seem to be dominated by the obvious Pipa flute with a guitar or two to complement or even a "New Age" synthesizer to eradicate any traditional sound , El Condor Pasa reverts to traditional and fun music: miniature ensembles of mariachi guitars of all sizes, a harp-like instrument (zither?) that is invigorating and enchanting, and talented flutists who play in perfect symphony.

Worth it's weight in gold, El Condor Pasa is a steal from Laserlight, it's manufacturer. El Condor Pasa is a journey far south of the border; you can almost visualize Spanish colonial plazas filled with campesinos and young couples courting in the shade of ancient trees. Don't let this treasure slip through your fingers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Andean CD I've heard.
Too much of the Andean pipe music I've heard sounds like New Age rather than Peruvian Folk music. Either that, or it's a weak "South American" remake of easy listening standards on non-traditional instruments, with a pipe or two thrown in for flavor. Not so with these guys! This is truly original Andean Folk, by three very talented brothers (plus a spouse). It's lively, yet haunting, and I highly recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great music at a great price!
Many years ago... I bought and enjoyed the album "Urubamba". Some years later, I bought this album to satisfy my craving for more Andean flute music. I was initially a little disappointed; the production quality is not up to the level set by Urubamba and the style is less "polished and refined". But it grew on me.

In recent years, I began searching again for more such music, and found the groups Inkuyo and Sukay. And here on Amazon, I came across this CD (my album is long gone)... as soon as I heard the first track sample, it all came back, and I realized I now like this CD as much as the "polished and refined" sound of Urubamba (not that I wouldn't buy an Urubamba CD in a heartbeat, but I can't find it anywhere!). Yes, this CD is less polished, but it maintains a high energy level and has equally good musicianship, with a style that is more spontaneous and carefree (IMHO). At this price I think this is an excellent buy, and I recommend it highly. ... Read more

"Background music" isn't much of a compliment, I know, but I really do recommend this CD. It calms me down and puts me back into a sunny mood. Great for driving in bad road conditions or doing an icky task. My husband says of folk music that it's really all the same tune, only started at different places and played at different speeds (he's kidding). In this case, its true (for me). Chilean traditional music septet Inti-Illimani have spent the last 30 yearsmixing together South American folk styles and a human-rights oriented political agenda.Taking on the largely string-oriented folk music of the Andes Mountains, Inti-Illimanisurround their often unison Spanish vocals with rainstorms of guitars, charangos, ronrocos, and guitarrons. In doing so, the group celebrates the everydayness of Andeanmusic and culture--striking a chord of solidarity with global folk cultural struggles. --Andy Bartlett ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Un disco de bellezas andinas sonoras

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a beautiful work
I have enjoyed Andean music since the early 80s when I bought an album by the Peruvian group Urubamba (which I still play). This CD has all the beauty and texture of the traditional instruments, and additionally is melodically and rhythmically original and intriguing. All of the compositions are by the members of the group, and all ten tracks are winners.

Caminito a Nacza and Inti Raimi bring to mind my favorite McCoy Tyner album. This is a group of very fine musicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've been listening to this CD non-stop!
The music on this CD is beautiful and unique. You will hear bamboo pan flutes, Latin guitars, a rainstick, a variety of drums, and sounds from nature. I find this music both relaxing and uplifting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuando presentaron este disco, yo estuve ahí, es...

5-0 out of 5 stars extraordinary!
This album is definitely among their best ever! The arrangements are elegant and powerful, the melodies are beautiful and stay pleasantly with you, and the lyrics are nothing short of superb, with Patricio Manns providing poetry of love (medianoche, quien eres tu, for example) and subtle protest (el hacha, for example, is about deforestation), skillfully avoiding being corny or plain propaganda. Buy it now, sit down and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Majestic, nostalgic return to South American origins
Inti-Illimani is one of the finest musical groups that Latin America has to offer. Originally from Chile, Inti-Illimani blends styles and instruments from around the world. The lyrics, provided with translations into English, evoke a quiet process of nostalgia (cf. Quien Eres Tu or Medianoche). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual, Moving, Inspiring, Hypnotizing and erotic!!!
This is the first Peruvian CD that I have ever purchased. It's very hard to explain what I feel when I listen to this music. It's like seeing a mountain range and trying to take a picture, only ending up with a flat dull image of a beautiful inspiration. Inkuyo is like that, they are the mountain range. The flute and drum beats will make you want to dance naked around a roaring fire. The huaynos are hypnotizing and erotic. The quechua language, mixed with some spanish, is amazing and beautiful. This is, in my opinion, the best of Inkuyo's recordings. Hypnotizing and erotic!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Potpourri of Pleasaure
Talk about diverse! This Rough Guide travels from Cuban son and the magnificent piano playing of Ruben Gonzalez to popular Indonesian songs and back again. One must have an open mind and broad tastes to be able to absorb the vastly divergent styles on this CD. However, each selection is superb on its own terms, and most of the music is danceable. If you are truly a connoisseur of world music, try this companion CD to volume two of the revised ROUGH GUIDE TO WORLD MUSIC. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best of Uakti's excellent works
I think this one and 'I Ching' are the best of Uakti's works. 'I Ching' was sophisticated, energetic, and had a whole load of brilliant ideas. In the end, though, it had an experimental feel that may not appeal to everyone. 'Trilobyte' is a further step in the direction of sophistication, meanwhile maintaining all of Uakti's melodic charm and instrumental voicing mystique. The subsequent 'Aquas de Amazonas' album is basically a Philip Glass composition played by Uakti. 'Trilobyte' best balances Glass's intricacy with Uakti's flowing, rhythmic melodies. It's a great combination.

4-0 out of 5 stars more of the same
If I had to choose one single group that best exemplified the overall nature of 'New Age' music, it would be Uakti. That doesn't mean I feel this is 'generic' New Age music, however, as their approach is a decided cut above the nearly elevator music instrumental fare that afflicts this genre. Uakti does produce entirely instrumental music using woodwind and xylophone-like instruments that they create themselves, but the sound they construct is both light and gentle and quite unique, bubbling along like the proverbial brook. It should be mentioned that this is not ambient music: most of their pieces actually have real tunes. Nevertheless, the tunes play against a certain constant atmosphere just about always invoking the world of the rainforest. "Trilobyte" breaks no new directions within this basic format and is as good a place as any to begin to explore their sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting melodies flowing on the softest of rhythms
There is a lot of mystery in this music. The instrumentation is like nothing I've heard before, with many hand made instruments that yield polished, ageless music, that quickly becomes warmly inviting of replays. There is a fantastic variety of both melody and rhythm from track to track, and sometimes surprising transitions within the same track, all providing further amusement. The overall tone is a quiet, sustained energy, thus this is great music to stimulate new thoughts or accompany conversation, but it is reassuringly peaceful enough to fall asleep by also. ...
