Dan Hicks, late of the long-gone Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, here leads his perennially quirky and hip Jug Band (who've individually played with everyone from Elvis Costello to Etta James and Commander Cody) through a live set of loose standards and a few egg-nogged originals. The Jug band rocks, swings, and swerves off the road in performances recorded live on Christmas Eve 1989, and December 23 and 24, 1990. Hicks's and his fellow Juggers' droll and often tongue-in-cheek delivery of Christmas goodies is certain to charm even the most vexed Scrooge. And with his originals "Under the Mistletoe," "Santa As Seen on TV (Sheik of Araby)," plus a reworking of Van Morrison's "Gloria" (here aptly titled "S.A.N.T.A"), it becomes clear that the band is inviting listeners to a great party. Throw in sundry chestnuts like "Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin'" and Tim Eschliman's "He's on Holiday in His Mind" and you've got highly flammable contents under pressure that are bound to be "Rockin' the Nativity Scene." A great companion piece to the Jug Band's five-star Mistletoe Jam album. - Martin Keller ... Read more

No one conveyed the inherent conflict between the secular and spiritual worlds more articulately than Ira and Charlie Louvin. It makes sense, then, that the Country Music Foundation would separate the gospels from the seculars on this record rather than sequence it chronologically. Ten of the 14 cuts are taken from Opry's "Prince Albert Show" (in front of a thrilled audience), while the remaining four come from a 1951 date for Danville, Virginia's WDVA radio. All of them feature the purest of harmonies, and whether celebratory or cautionary, they're always compelling and watertight. --Marc Greilsamer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this CD because, I love the Louvin Brother's
I love the clarity, you can actually understand what they are singing. I love the style and the wonderful way they sing. Especially Gospel songs. They put such feeling in their songs that you can relate to most of them. I can listen to them sing by the hour. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of his best live recordings
I have enjoyed Glen's music since I was a kid and "Live at the Troubador" is the first recording I have gotten on CD. His smooth voice, positive humor, and great choice of songs make this a recording that I would recommend to all fans. I like "The Honey-Wind Blows" and "going back to where I come from." "That's the way it's going to be" is a very positive song and "The Mermaid" is very humorous. However, my favorite song on this entire CD is "Far Side of the hill." No matter what kind of mood I am in or how stressed out I am, this song always helps me relax. If you don't have this recording, you should get hold of it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The WWF of Bluegrass
These were the lean years of bluegrass, when only the REALLY talented and committed were willing to play for small audiences and smaller returns. Many survived by slipping in under the mantle of "folk music" and playing venues like Newport. Folk fans in those years heard the best of the best in bluegrass, and many of these are included here. This fine collection includes veterans like Monroe and the Stanleys when they were still at their peak musically as well as some of the earliest members of the new wave, like the Dillards and fiddler Berline. Own a piece of history! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Spirit of Christmas Past
When originally released in 1990 through Kicking Mule Records, this wonderful album was entitled Inside Fezziwig's...the Spirit of Christmas Past. The reference to Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol" is appropriate. On the album's 17 instrumental tracks, Ed Sweeney (6- and 12-string guitar, banjo) is joined by other musicians on hammer dulcimer, concertina, fiddle, bones, spoons and handbells to create the atmosphere of a 19th Century Christmas. Close your eyes and you can conjure up the image of old Fezziwig himself dancing with his wife. So grab a bowl of ale, a slab of mince pie and let this music transport you back to a simpler time. This is one of a handful of must-own holiday CDs. ESSENTIAL

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the energy
I will admit to hearing a few moments of true talent shining through on an otherwise amature and poorly executed recording. Live? well perhaps. Maybe that would explain the many out of tune instruments, a couple out of tune singers and the few cuts that could only be classified as painful! A very disappointing representation of what I know Boston has to offer. Luckily, having visited this and many other fine establisments in the area, I've heard and know better! Other than the few talented souls that allowed themselves to be squandered on this recording, you won't find any gems here folks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hiring Fair!
I have heard the songs and tunes on Pub Crawl performed by current members of Hiring Fair (Seth, Brenda, Jono and Tom). This band has more energy than a pack of three year olds high on sugar. Listening to their music guarentees a "fun" night. Brenda's voice is absolutely beautiful especially during her version of summer in Dublin. Seth is one of the most talented bass players I have ever heard and seen. He moves just like a true rocker also. Jono's fingers can move faster than I have ever seen anyone move when he plays some of the fastest jigs and reels (even slip jigs if you're lucky). Great for Irish dancers and wanna be Irish dancers. Tom, is a talented/aggressive guitar player with a truly unique/gorgeous voice. The CD is a must buy especially just to hear this one band!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Innovative Music for All Ages
Coming from an 18 year old student who has heard and met many of the artists on the "Pub Crawl" CD I can assure you that the tracks can be appreciated by audiences of all ages. Whether you're looking for traditional tunes or original songs, Pub Crawl has it all. Not only are the artists incredibly talented but they are also friendly and funny. Each artist is unique in his/her ability but they all work well together to create a superb blend of Irish/folk tunes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Quality
Not only is the performance great, but the technical rendition is absolutely as good as I have, as an audiophile, heard. I listened to this this performance on another brand CD and then listened to this remastering on Analogue Productions. I was prepared to concentrate for several minutes to hear any difference. But the difference was stunning and obvious within the first few seconds. For one thing, the other label sounded like it was a typical stereo with two sound sources. With this Analogue Productions CD, the sound stage was a seamless webb! And the articulation of the singers was present in great detail. Altogether a MUST GET for those who like this genre of music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the 20th century
I have owned this original LP for over 40 years. Played it out and need a new one . . please. There is no other group that can compare to the style and originality of the WEAVERS . . Hear it once and you'll be a fan forever.

4-0 out of 5 stars Please Reissue this CD!
I loved listening to this album growing up and sitting here looking at the record jacket brings back a lot of memories. As another reviewer has stated, the Weavers get you up and singing, whatever your age. Their voices blend together so well, and their musicianship is excellent too. My personal favorites on this album are "Drill, ye Tarriers, Drill," "The Frozen Logger," "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore," and "The Wreck of the 'John B.'" Reissue this CD, O Record Company, so a new generation of fans can enjoy the melodies of the Weavers on tour.
