4-0 out of 5 stars Pepsi not Coke
Well, you probably have Rum and Coca Cola somewhere in your collection if you are a Calypso fan. So this recording is a nice, breezy supplement to your Lord Invader discography. It's really quite a crisp and clever collection of Invader's best including a mischeivous number on covert beach excursions with a girl who'll do anything for Pepsi Cola, say what is it with Invader and cola anyway? I'm beginning to think the black bubbly is a naughty analogy for something. There's a great number about getting lost on the New York subway and another misadventure involving Invader's hapless sojourn in a tranvestite bar in Germany. Boy that Invader sure gets around. There's lots of Kalinda chants in between the more dolled-up numbers, making for a nice tension between an unplugged Carnival Monday sound versus the more crafty favorites like Tied Tongue Baby and Sly Mongoose. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
I bought this album on a whim, after a hard-working day. I already had a couple of their albums, but still wasn't quite prepared for this collection (from 2 different concerts, 2 different dates). What an alternately warm, rocking(!), moving and energetic set. Calling them the "Irish Beatles" is perhaps a bit silly, but it can't be denied that this is some of the finest Celtic/trad. Irish music ever recorded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Traditional Irish at its best
The Bothy band is amazing...plain and simple. This album is everything the trad irish music lover could ever want. There are jigs, reels, laments...EVERYTHING. Grab your Guinness and put on your dancing shoes because this album will have you out of your chair and stepping all over the place! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Storyteller
I stumbled upon David Wilcox about six years ago in Keene New Hampshire where he played live at the college up there. What an amazing talent ... especially his ability to engage his audience and tell compelling stories with wonderful musicianship and artful turn of phrase. I recommend this CD of his live work enthusiastically, because, as others have written, it gives a true feel for the unique and enriching experience that comes with seeing him live. Blow 'Em Away is an hilarious song that makes me laugh at my own "road rage", "Johnny's Camaro" shines a bright light on empty materialism, and the Mango Song is worth the price of admission all on its own. Do yourself a favor and pick this gem up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wilcox's Best Disc
I consider this the best Wilcox album available. I have all the other albums also but this one captures the one characteristic that all the other's don't, David's sense of humor. Blow 'em Away, When You Love Somebody, and Roadside are nothing short of hilarious. Of course the acoustic rifts and smooth meaningful vocals are still the focus but this album captures the entire realm of Wilcox the entertainer. If you buy one David Wilcox album, make it this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the contrary: A perfect example of David's spectrum
I can't understand people being critical of this and comparing it negatively with David's other works. It was my introduction to the world of Wilcox, and I can not think of a more appropriate one. It has touches of his sensitivity, his extensive metaphors, and also a representative share of his humour. The live aspect is what really gives this album its charm. I heard this album before first seeing him in concert and his interaction with the audience is really what makes his show great. His tone has changed a little since this recording (See Live Songs and Stories), but overall this is a great album which does a perfect job of incorporating his style of storytelling and brilliant songwriting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I'm a die hard fan, I love David as an entertainer and have most of his cd's. I usually find a few favorite selections, but enjoy the whole album. Not so here. There are some jewels ( such as Carpenter Story and For Real) and some junk (Mango Story/song, Barbie). The first song "Blow 'em Away" about the frustration/violent fantasies of a rush hour commuter(yes, we identify) was funny back when David recorded this album, but with today's sensibilities would be considered in poor taste.

David has enormous talent and a worthy message. He can get away with being wry, as in Boob Job. His album "How Did You Find Me Here" is stellar. This album I'll probably listen to when I can sit near the "skip" button.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little disappointing
I was really excited when I first heard that David was coming out with a live album because I have always really enjoyed his concerts and hoped that some of the energy could be made available to people who never get to see him in concert. But when the album actually came out, I was a little disappointed with some of the choices made and how far it comes from re-creating the concerts. I actually like the album OK, but it is probably my least favorite of his albums - and while I'd recommend one of his concerts to virtually anyone, this CD would definitely not top my list as a suggestion for an introduction to David Wilcox. It's nice to get some of the stories, but it just doesn't seem to have the flow of his typical concert. But the "revised" version of After the Hurricane at the end is hilarious if you manage to actually hear it without thinking the CD has already ended. Ironically, the REAL East Asheville Hardware Store closed soon after the release of this album, so I guess Dave's advice to listeners didn't have the desired effect! But at least it left a legacy in music, even if it didn't make it onto a better album. ... Read more

A fascinating illustration of the changes wrought by the waning folk revival, this ample set culls 31 performances from the Newport Folk Festivals from 1963 to '68, surely the event's most vital and traditionally grounded years. While the urban folk culture long looked at commercial country music with suspicion (the feeling was mutual), musical affinities gradually won out. This set captures the excitement of those changes. Hearing Mother Maybelle Carter introduce and then steam through "Cannonball Blues" is alone worth the asking price. The recording quality is rugged in places, but where else can you hear live performances from Ike Everly and son Don, and six full band cuts from Roy Acuff and his Smokey Mountain Boys (including a thrilling "Dixie Breakdown," a banjo set piece for Larry McNeely)? --Roy Kasten ... His studio albums were tricky affairs generally cursed with overproduction, but Townes Van Zandt's solo live recordings (and his influential songwriting) have made him a Texas music legend. A Gentle Evening with Townes Van Zandt captures the enigmatic performer alone at a 1969 Carnegie Hall concert, sounding a little tentative but still cracking the occasional joke. His set list consists of material from his first two albums, including classics "Tecumseh Valley," "Like a Summer's Thursday," and "She Came and She Touched Me." "Talking KKK Blues," heard here for the first time on record, bears a striking resemblance to the songwriter's "Fraternity Blues" and shows Van Zandt's biting wit. Since the definitive Townes Van Zandt concert document, Live at the Old Quarter, remains out of print, this single CD will serve the late Texan's legion of fans well. Aptly titled, it's a subdued affair, but it's still essential for anyone who wants to hear the performer in his youthful prime. --Jason Verlinde ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Entire '69 Carnegie Hall recording from 25-yr-old Townes!
This mellow CD catches Townes in a show he did at Carnegie Hall on Nov. 26, 1969, as part of a Poppy Records showcase. Also on the bill were Dick Gregory and Mandrake Memorial. Poppy Records went belly-up and the recording went to United Artists Records, then later to Capitol Records, which is releasing this on the Dualtone label. Townes was just 25 when this recording was made. If you expect a long show, expect to be disappointed. Remember, this was a "showcase," so he performed just nine songs. Fortunately, unlike many live recordings, the between song dialogue has been left in (maybe to make this CD seem longer!), which is nice. Townes' chatter with the audience is almost as entertaining as the music. He mentions that he'd been playing professionally for just three years, so this short CD captures all of what must have been a magical evening -- hence the title, "A Gentle Evening with Townes Van Zandt." Some of the songs that night came from Townes first two albums, which had already been released, but the real gem is the opener, "Talking KKK Blues," which has never been released. "Talking KKK Blues" is so much fun that it's a shame it took 32 years for it to make it onto a recording. As I said before, this is a fairly short recording of just nine songs, so if you want a 70-minute CD, you might want to pass on this. But if you want quality of music, not quantity, then spend a gentle half hour or so with a very, very young genius-in-the-making.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Gentle Evening with TownesVZ
If you want to listen to some early TVZ live you will enjoy this album. It's almost like a boot leg with his talkin' in between his songs. TVZ at his best and not apparently wasted on the wind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
This is my 3rd TVZ live album (others: Rear View Mirror, Live at McCabes) and it is very very good. Compared to the others that I have heard the two things very different about this album is that one, it is a very very young TVZ (25 year old) and secondly the large audience. A typical TVZ concert usually were to small audiences. My only complaint is that he sings only 6 of his "songs", the rest being a joke, talking blues and a cover.
All in all, an excellent album. And now I can't wait for the release of the mythical Live at the Old Quarter

4-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening "lost" 1969 live recording
This recently rediscovered (and never before issued) live recording from a 1969 Carnegie Hall concert provides a rare opportunity to look back to the beginning of an artist's career and see things that might not have been evident at the time. It's akin, as the album's promotional materials allude, to viewing a previously unseen photograph of a familiar friend or family member from a time before you really knew them. It adds dimension to a period of that person's life that you may have not been present for, and thus have only learned about in retrospect. At the same time, your view of this historical artifact is colored by the perception you've developed over the years.

This performance was part of a label showcase (for Poppy Records), and the live recording was shuffled from one vault (United Artists) to another (Capitol) as labels bought one another. Eventually it was simply forgotten. Having been recorded shortly after Van Zandt's second LP was released, the songlist leans heavily on his early work. Four songs ("Tecumseh Valley" "Like a Summer's Thursday" "Second Lover's Song" and "She Came and She Touched Me") are drawn from the two released albums, and another pair ("Lungs" and "Rake") would turn up on his next two releases. Two songs ("Talking Thunderbird Wine Blues" and "The Ballad of Ira Hayes") wouldn't turn up in studio form for more than two decades, and the final original track ("Talking KKK Blues") has never before seen release on a Van Zandt album.

Though Van Zandt's catalog of self-penned tunes was smaller in 1969 than for his famous 1977 live recording, "Live at the Old Quarter (Houston, Texas)," his plain-spoken, folky style and dark humor was already in place. His half-spoken rendition of "The Ballad of Ira Hayes" is more chilling than Johnny Cash's contemporaneous cover, and his "Talking KKK Blues" is truly sardonic (including the introduction: "I figure there're more bigots here than winos."). The understated solo-acoustic setting is incredibly powerful, and Van Zandt's focus is impressive. All the more so for his young age of 25, his few years of performing experience, and the imposing Carnegie Hall setting.

Van Zandt released several live albums, including a spate of posthumous issues, but this 1969 recording offers something distinctive: a voice that hasn't yet gained the weariness of a life on the road, employed by a superbly talented songwriter whose life experience had yet to fully catch up to his preternatural wisdom. It's a truly amazing feat of vault archaeology to turn up something this significant, artistically worthy and completely forgotten on such a well-known artist.

4-1/2 stars, if Amazon allowed fractional reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Look who this record is by, that's all ye need to know...
If you don't own every recording of this man you really aren't serious about American music.

This isn't the first or second record by Townes to acquire... but it is one of the thirty or so that everyone needs to have.

A lovely, youthful set by America's greatest songwriter at world renowned Carnegie Hall.

God rest your soul Townes! ... Read more

Compiled from benefits held in December 1999 and 2000 inCalifornia and Canada, these acoustic performances document a who's whoof country-folk singer-songwriters united by Emmylou Harris'sprofound commitment to the anti-landmine movement. The performances arenever less than emotionally riveting, though Guy Clark, John Prine, andespecially Kris Kristofferson--his jocund but weathered version of the obscure"Shipwrecked in the Eighties" has a fool's wisdom--lighten the solemntone. Only NanciGriffith strikes a sanctimonious note; the earned indignation of Bruce Cockburn'sMines of Mozambique" cuts much closer to the political bone. Thestandout track, though, is Harris's mystical opener, "The Pearl"--sungwith a harrowing elegance that trumps the Red Dirt Girlversion--although Terry Allen'sabsurd, poignant pastiche "Wilderness of This World" is a close second.--Roy Kasten ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great live renditions of studio successes
This cd had a diverse song list, with different types of performers. It is beautiful and intimate compilation.

Emmy Lou Harris's stripped down version of "The Pearl" is very moving. Gillian Welch's and David Rawlings performance of "Morphine" is enchanting. With Gillian's heavenly voice and David's earthy sound, the song sometimes feels like a juxtaposition. This is especially effective since "Morphine" is about the singer's love and hate relationship with the narcotic.

Mary Chapin Carpenter's "This Shirt" is very touching. I appreciated the live version of this song for the clarity of the lyrics. This song has had little, if any, airplay and yet it is one MCC's best.

John Prine's lyrics were silly in "It's a Goofy World." Even though it took no poet to pen these lyrics, the song was fun and easy to sing along with. The inclusion of this song reminded me of Shakespearian tragedies that have short comedies interspersed. Although the album supposts a very serious cause, the song recognizes that we can't just focus on the World's sorrow. It is the joy in life that keeps us alive to fight for a better world.

Kris Kristofferson's voice has never sounded better. Steve Earle's "Christmas in Washington" has so many back up vocalists, at the end, that the song had a tinge of Gospel to it. Nanci Griffith's "Its a hard life," is fairly raucous. The backgound vocals made me feel as though I had a spiritual experience. The song "Mary," is lovely and made me long for my loved ones who have left this world.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Landmine Truth
The Landmine Concert does not rememble anything close to a slick studio recording. It's also not anything near the full band unplugged sound heard a few years back on the MTV series. What your getting is outstanding laid back intimate solos with minimal accompaniment. The highlight of highlights on this cd is Guy Clark, who has a flair for the dramatic with his trademark funny story singing on "Cold Dog Soup". I also like all the other performances. The only a slight letdown is Kristofferson's"Shipwrecked In The Eighties" because his singing voice has changed. If you like that clean acoustic guitar sound where you feel a performer like Emmylou Harris is playing in your living room, you'll find "Concerts For A Landmine Free World" to be a winner.

3-0 out of 5 stars How could they make this CD w/out Buddy & Julie Miller?!?!
Although I haven't purchased this CD, I notice that Buddy and Julie Miller's "100 Million Little Bombs" is not on the list of titles. I can think of no more appropriate song for a CD titled "Concerts for a Landmine Free World".

5-0 out of 5 stars A concert CD that embodies the emotional spirit of the event
I attended the first of these concerts at Stanford Univ. in Palo Alto, and it was one of the most awe-inspiring musical event I've ever experienced. This CD captures the heart and soul of this important crusade, and offers some of the most beautiful live performances by some of the best folk performers of our time. Patty Griffin's soul-stirring rendition of "Mary", recorded in Palo Alto, is worth the price of the CD alone.

If you're a fan of the soundtrack to "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?", then this CD - including incredible live performances by Emmy Lou Harris and Gillian Welsh - will be a welcome part of your contemporary folk collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Cause, But ......
This CD offers highlights from a series of concerts organized by Emmylou Harris to raise money to aid landmine victims and raise awareness of this horrendous situation, which exists in many places that have endured armed conflict. For addressing this problem and raising money to help its casualties, this deserves five stars, and I urge you to buy it or make a monetary contribution to this cause.

For these reasons, it pains me to report that, artistically, this recording is only a partial success. Only a few of the performances are truly inspiring, and several sink to the level of embarrassing. Let's start with the good stuff. The album opens with Emmylou Harris's "The Pearl," one of the highlights from 2000's "Red Dirt Girl." Harris sings here with a passion and intensity that serves the song well. Bookending Harris' achievement is the closer, "Christmas Time In Washington," Steve Earle's wonderful, wistful liberal nostalgia trip, which features Harris on backing vocals (Emmylou shows up on several other cuts as well). Another highlight is Patty Griffin's lovely "Mary."

Mary Chapin Carpenter offers a nice version of the decade-old "This Shirt," which, unfortunately has become overly familiar and should probably be taken off her set list for a while. Nanci Griffith's overly-earnest "Its A Hard Life" is another such song that even her fans probably do not need to hear again, and it has not aged well. John Prine and Guy Clark hold their respective own on their songs, but Bruce Cockburn, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and Kris Kristofferson's offer boring performances of second-rate songs.

Its not easy for me to slam artists who donate their time for a good cause such as this. Once again, I hope you will purchase this CD to help end the horrors of landmines throughout the world. Even if you play it only once and file it away forever, you will have made the world a better place, particularly if you take the time to read the liner notes. Musically, though, this CD is only a partial success, and three stars is as generous as I can be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound not perfect, but lovely anyway
First downside-- 24 of the 43 tracks are taken from off-air
tapes, so definitely some 'bootleg' quality sound aspects of some of those. The other 19 are very good though, and there're some definite rarities like a live "Cold Mountain," a group rendering of Terry Cox's "Moondog," 'folk revival' chestnut "Every Night When the Sun Goes In," & most importantly perhaps, a full rendering of "Name of the Game," song in snippet form only on soundtrack of forgettable film, "Tam Lin." Also, a rare, slightly 'dark mood' live version of "Springtime Promises" & John doing "Sally Free & Easy." And the version of "Maid That's Deep in Love" is IMO superior to the one on CRUEL SISTER. Excellent notes as always by Colin Harper & nice rare photos. All in all, fascinating stuff, if not maybe the place to start for the casual fan, or beginners (check out LIGHT FLIGHT compilation for that-- or recent BASKET OF LIGHT or SWEET CHILD reissues). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Nice Record
Muriel Anderson is a truly accomplished player. She is one of only two people ever to win the Winfield Fingerpicking Championship playing nylon string guitar. She is a respected teacher (I think at Belmont College in Nashville) and the boss of those Murial Anderson All-Star Guitar Nights that attract all the best pickers around. I think she is unique because she plays in a style where you usually hear a steel string guitar. It is not unfair to compare her to Chet Atkins. My favorite is "It Never Gets Easier," but she plays the fast stuff as well as the melancholy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yankee Dollars
Alan Lomax, the esteemed musical anthropologist is the host and organizer of this truly outstanding concert, recorded at New York City Town Hall in 1946. Lomax was the Ry Cooder of his time (a la Buena Vista Social Club fame) and was praised for his field recordings of ethnic music from all over the world. You can tell he was definitely in contact with the 3 giants of Calypso featured here, well before the Town Hall concert. Between songs, there is a very natural and amusing verbal exchange between Lomax and Lord Invader, Duke of Iron and Macbeth. This is a truly fantastic piece of musical history and a foot-thumping one at that. It is mischievously infectious to hear an American audience break out in song during the chorus of Rum and Coca Cola, a song that indicts Americans for their cultural invasion of the West Indies during World War 2 (which had just ended a few months ago). ...Drinking Rum and Coca Cola, Down at Point Cumana... (where the American soldiers from the local base would hang out)...Both Mother and Daughter, Working for their Yankee Dollar... These are local women who won't even wave at you if you grew up with them but every night they're drinking Cuba Libres with the Yankee soldiers! Invader's song is impossible to resist and was remade several times by American singers. Duke of Iron's Ugly Woman was also an American favorite, remade I believe, by Bing Crosby. The song admonishes that if you ever want to be happy ...From a logical point of view, Marry a woman uglier than you... This CD is the first part of 2 recordings, the other: Calypso After Midnight is the second half of the same concert. The 2 together are the most charming and amusing concert recordings I've heard from so long ago and their release is highly praiseworthy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great one
This album has inspired and inspiring performances of some of Ms. Kane's best songs from her first two studio albums.

"A Thousand Girls", "Tucson", "The Problem With Jazz" and, of course, "Off the Ground" are really wonderful to listen to. I am also glad to hear that the recording features a bit of her honest, funny between-song patter.

I like it as well as her most recent album Rain and Mud and Wild and Green.

If you like the Indigo Girls and similar folk or folk rock acts, it's time you heard Christine Kane.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great vicarious fix
I had never heard of Christine Kane before a friend invited me to one of her shows, and these were the things that amazed me after seeing her perform live:1. that we were not in a packed-full stadium full of fans throwing flowers and/or themselves onto the stage, and 2. that I myself had enough restraint as to not do that in front of the 80 or so people at this particular performance.

Her shows are like that, and so is her Live cd.It's true:she is a phenomenal lyricist and musician and that is evident on all of her cds.But to me, the thing that sets Ms. Kane apart from the pack and keeps me wanting more is the energy and style of her live performances, and her Live cd captures that experience.Like her shows, Christine Kane Live is fun, spirited, generous, thoughtful, dear, sexy, smart, sassy, real, and at times, just short of being raunchy, which we love. It's just her and her guitar, doing what she does --- which is to give so much to her audience that we all feel wonderfully spoiled.I have been listening to this cd for more than a year now and I still just love it.I always feel like I've given myself a treat when I listen to it ... not only is it really great music, but listening to her Live cd transports me back to that delightful gift of being in her audience.

If you've never been to one of Ms. Kane's performances, I highly recommend getting to one.And if you can't immediately make it to one of her shows, my suggestion is to drop her Live cd directly into the shopping cart and proceed to checkout ... it's a great vicarious fix! ... Read more

Album Description

Kinky Friedman and Little Jewford are back together on a live CD compiled from their European concert tour late last year. The 2 1/2 month tour encompassed over 40 cities and 10 countries. Classic Snatches From Europe is a comedic tour de force of the Kinkster and Little Jewford's old and new classic bits like Bob Dylan's Dream, First Jewish Justice of the Peace, Willie Nelson's Latent Homosexual Silver Concho Belt, Idiot Savant and Invitation to the White House. Also included are classic songs like They Ain't Makin' Jews Like Jesus Anymore, Asshole From El Paso, Men's Room L.A. and Homo Erectus. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Classic Snatches from Europe
If youj are expecting classic Kinky Friedman , this is not the album for you. The album is a collection of takling and introductions with just four songs on the album. If you are a consumate Kinky Friedman fan, as I, you would appreciate this album for part of your collection. Otherwise, try one of his many other albums and youynwon't go wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars part music, part repartée, but all amusing and fun
Kinky Friedman and Little Jewford are probably an acquired taste for many; personally, I think they're a hoot. They point up one of the really great qualities of Texas: if you let it all hang out, Texans are inclined to accept you as a kindred spirit.

About half of the CD is comedy bits of one sort or another from live shows in Europe, so if you are looking for a full slate of music, you might want to consider another Kinkster CD. That said, what's on here is a good listen. It has a lot of very short tracks with variable volume, so it doesn't work well in a changer unless the rest of the loadout is other Kinky Friedman stuff (a good idea). I'd rate it PG-13 in terms of language and sexually oriented content. If one is easily offended by politically incorrect utterances, they won't like it at all--those who like raucous, no-sacred-cows humour will love it. Small appetizer: Kinky mentions that he comes from Kerrville, TX. He refers to himself and others from there as 'Kerrverts'.

Their customer service was efficient, so I'd give them very good marks as people to do business with. I'll probably order more of their stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Kinky performance
As the title humorously implies, this disc is a collection of short recordings from Kinky and Little Jewford's recent concert tour of Europe. Having just seen Kinky and Little Jewford perform live in Austin, TX, I am happy to say that the recordings do a good job of recreating what it was like to see the performance in person. (The disc does not come with beer and cigars; you have to provide your own).

The CD has 32 tracks, most of them only 1 or 2 minutes long. If you buy this CD expecting to hear many of Kinky's songs, you will be dissappointed. Instead, what you get here is a great collection of Kinky's stories, one-liners, and philosophical observations on life interspersed with a few pretty good tunes. This is not the first Kinky Friedman CD you should buy; there are several other compilations of his songs that do a better job introducing the range of Kinky's music (Old Testaments and New Revelations is my favorite, along with the tribute CD, Pearls in the Snow). This new disc is a great addition to the collection of all Kinky Friedman fans, and anyone who has ever wished they could see the Kinkster perform live on stage. ... Read more

Singer/guitarists Robin & Linda Williams may be billed as a duo, but they perform in concert as a quartet. Backing the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia, couple are Jim Watson, a founding member of the Red Clay Ramblers, and Kevin Maul. On their recent studio recordings, the Williamses have made a deliberate shift from folk music to a mix of country and folk, and their new repertoire would never work live if it didn't have Watson's electric bass as an anchoring rhythm and Maul's hot Dobro licks as dressing. You can hear how well it jells on Live, credited to Robin & Linda Williams "and Their Fine Group." --Geoffrey Himes ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good live tracks
Nice Yo La Tengo track -- "Lewis" from their President Yo La Tengo album

4-0 out of 5 stars Correction
Just to correct the other reviewer, The Fabulous Twister Sisters WAS a joint partnership between violinist/vocalist, Deni Bonet and vocalist/guitarist, Julie Adams, which broke up when Deni left the show a few years ago, to pursue a solo career. I agree about the quality of this record, though, of which the high spot is the chilling duet between Warren Zevon on piano and Deni Bonet on violin

4-0 out of 5 stars Ecclectic blend of mellow and fun
The Twister Sisters is really Julie Adams with a backup band and she is fantastic. A wonderful combo of Emmylou Harris and Sarah MacLachlan sounds. Sarah is on here too, sounding sultry and ethereal. Alex Chilton is stripped down to a trio and offering up something wry and catchy. Martin Crenshaw is his usual playful self. Warren Zevon is not wry or humorous on this one - he does one of those Southener lamenting over the south's loss of the Civil War - and he sounds convincing to me.

I have vol 3 and vol 2. Vol 3 is my favorite out of the two, ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Number One on my "desert isle" list...
Just to set the record straight (see the other reviews), the lead singer on "Kilkelly" (on this CD and on the 'Kilkelly' CD) is Robbie O'Connell. Mick Moloney does sing harmony on this song, and a glorious job it is by both of them.
That said, you really need this album. It captures the group Green Fields, comprised of all stellar artists in their own right, at its finest. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Timeless Irish Music
This is a great album. I bought it the first time at a perfomance of Mick Moloney (the main artist), and then gave it to a friend. I agree with the other review that the rendition of Kilkelly on this album is better than on his album "Kilkelly"; but niether can compare to the way Mick Moloney sings it live. A truly great contribution to traditional Irish Music.

4-0 out of 5 stars This version of Kilkelly is more beautiful....
There is a gorgeous, haunting song on this album-- Kilkelly--about an old man whose children leave Ireland during a potato famine for a better life. Those of you of irish descent--or with an irish heart--get out your handkerchiefs. Particularly if you've been drinking whiskey or beer. Mick sings like an angel, and this is a better version than the one on his cd entitled Kilkelly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD expresses the best of folk music!
For all fans of Peter, Paul, & Mary, the live version of Lifelines is a wonderful display of folk music's purpose and soul. The special artists featured on this CD with p, p, & m are people who encouraged the group as they have grown. Along with these artists, p, p, & m selected younger artists who will hopefully carry on the great folk tradition. The songs on this CD cry out for love, acceptance, understanding, freedom, and peace--folk music's strongest elements. I love every song!! This is a great CD! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bill Miller LIVE !
This "live" is incredible ! so pure and beautiful... if you like acoustic guitar and Folk music, you must have this cd , it is as good as "the red road", the best studio album from bill miller.
bill sings on all tracks and plays the flute only on the first one "reservation road" before singing a magic simple version of that song (but all the songs are awesome!)... I bought it and I don't regret !
Just notice that the two last songs are recorded in studio.
