4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but Vol 1 MUCH better
More spotty than volume 1, there are some real gems here. However, there are several songs I just plain filter.

Nevertheless, the intimacy of the recording is still wonderful. Buy volume 1 first, then this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Political Commentary and Soulfully Moving
I grew up listening to Si Kahn in the backseat of my parents' car on long road trips from Vancouver to Carolina and back. I never though that 18 years later I would revisit his music for its political commentary, its beautiful sentiment and strong verse, and its strength. Striking on influences like Phil Ochs and Pete Seeger, Si Kahn is truly among the great folk artist of the past century.
Personally, I love his music because it bring me back to my roots...but anyone who listens will soon find the emotion and strength behind his lyrics and voice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A TREASURY OF BEAUTIFUL MELODIES
This is an alblum I will treasure forever! I normally avoid live alblums, the audio quality may be inferior to studio recordings, and there is the audience sound, applause etc,
This alblum is an exception, the sound quality is superior!
No audience noise !
Ed Gerhard is not simply an accomplished guitarist, he is an artist that will transport you to a simplier time. A time when you could savor each tone.
The Live Alblum is a portfolio of beautiful melodies. Some played with a deep soleful impressionist style and others with layers of tone quality you will love hearing over and over again. This alblum is my favorite acoustic guitar alblum !
I would reccomend starting any collection with this one. There is not a single track that is not outstanding!

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest from one of the Greatest!
Ed Gerhard is among the TOP recognized finger-stylists for acoustic guitar. Not an emerging pro, but already there with the likes of Alex De Grassi and others of the same pedigree.

Typically not a "speedy chops" guy, Gerhard is especially sensitive to dynamics and nuance of tone. He plays a very rich and resonant jumbo guitar, hand built for him by the master luthiers at BREEDLOVE guitars.

His touch, talent and his instrument combine to produce one of the most beautifull solo guitar albums of 1999. I highly reccomend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice!
In this age of body-boinging, neck-bending, two-hand tapping, and "done-without-overdubs" guitarists, it's very inspiring and enjoyable to hear the guitar played the way Gerhard does. The "oohs and ahhs" Ed inspires aren't for something pulled from a bag of tricks but are for his technical and musical brilliance. Thanks Ed! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful songwriter/storyteller
The late Townes Van Zandt was arguably the best country songwriter of the last twenty-five years. With lyrics that were poignant, intelligent and sensitive he weaved stories that were sometimes bitter, sometimes haunting and often hilarious.

This live set was my first Van Zandt albumn and it's a keeper. There's a real western flavor to it as he does his rendition of his Pancho and Lefty as well as Dollar Bill Blues, Waitin Around to Die and Pueblo Waltz.

If you have his albumns you won't be disappointed and if you've never heard him this is a great one to start with. A master.

3-0 out of 5 stars mournful intimacy
When I first heard this I thought WOW! this is brilliant. These songs are so great and the tone of the album so satisfying that I thought these must be the definitive versions. His mournful voice and near perfect minor chord melodies and lyrics really hit hard. It's easy to get caught up in the romance of this guy's life and hearing the songs sung live with such intimacy is great. As I listen to more of his stuff, though, I hear better versions of many of the tunes here on other disks. Not bad but not essential.

4-0 out of 5 stars so simple, so good
This is Townes in the perfect setting - live, and with minimal accompaniment. This cd contains what I belive to be the finest recording of "Nuthin'," with a flute providing haunting fills to Townes's dark, spare lyrics. The cd is full of fine versions, but if given the choice of only 1 cd from the TVZ catalog, I would recommend "Rear View Mirror," which is a live collection from this same era. However, this disc is a fine addition for any Townes Van Zandt fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars The way TvZ was meant to be experienced
Though not quite as good as "In the Rearview Mirror," "Live and Obscure" does considerable justice to the genius that was TvZ. His songwriting is absolutely amazing. The pure simplicity of his playing and singing leaves you speechless, just as in "Rearview." The sax adds character to the album, especially on "Poncho and Lefty", for a unique sound that is not overwhelming. All in all, you are left with TvZ doing what he does best, singing with a craftsmanship all his own and not duplicated anywhere else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Live and Kickin'!
For those TVZ fans out there who do not have the taste (or patience) for his 'overly' produced material (though all of it is worth a listen), this album has Townes in a perfect setting - live, simple, and direct. There are no schmaltzy strings, no sliding guitars to compete with the songs. This is just Townes, served plain and simple, the way it should be. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best live
John Martyn is one of those performers who is best live. This is one of his later live recordings, gone are the days of rocking back and forth in his chair making sweet music. This is with his band. Some excellent tracks and a guest guitar permormance from Dave G from Pink Floyd. If you want to drift away to the smooth deep tones of Mr Martyn then this is him at his almost best. (the BBC live album is the best, but sadly out of stock.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great cd from a lost american songwriter
40 records and still a mystery, this is just another great cd by an underrated singer songwriter. America wake up, clean you ears and listen to this guy! He should be in all the Top 10's in the country!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Jewell from John Stewart
Two wonderfull live CD's were recorded that week at the Turf Inn in Scotland. "Live at the Turf Inn" features John and Buffy, only with John's 12 string and Buffy's percussion doing introspective performances. Some of the same songs can be heard again on "Bandera" where John is backed by an amazing rock band that drives his energy into the stratosphere! It "Punch the Big Guy" is considered his best work of the 80's, then "Bandera" represents some of his best work of the 90's. It proves that John must be heard live, if in person or on this CD! Stewart fans must have this in thier collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man at His Best
John Stewart and a band that rocks. Sounds like the 70's, huh? This is a wonderful album. If you like John Stewart at all, please check this out. I'm not a big fan of some of his recent work, but this shines. ... Read more
