There are a number of great hip-hop mix CDs--check out Amazon.com's article on 1998's best--but Laid in Full stands out even among such august company. M-Boogie has established a phenomenal roster of MCs here, from KRS-One, who contributes the opening vocal, to underground stars Mos Def and Kool Keith (whose collaboration with DJ Spooky, "Object Unknown," is a highlight) to up-and-comers like Planet Asia and Iriscience (of Dilated Peoples)--and that doesn't even mention the people behind the boards and on the turntables who show up here, too (Peanut Butter Wolf, Kut Master Kurt, the Beat Junkies' DJ Babu, and on and on). There's nobody here just phoning it in, either--this is a topnotch collection of talented people, all of whom are proud to be contributing to the album. And it shows. --Randy Silver ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It's dope, but......
M-Boogie thinks he's DJ Premiere. For thoze that arent familar with Primo, he was the DJ in Gang Starr. Gang Starr made dope ass records. This MBoogie kid has a good ear for talent but not for scratching and beatz. Since he is Matt Terio the label owner he should stick to signing dope ass talant and not pretendin to be a wack DJ. I like the mix tape style of this CD. I don't really care for MBoogie's mixing. He's not undaground. He's mainstream. Babu is dope, KRS is dope not Matt Boogie.

Why do I diss Matt Boogie? Because he thinks he's the bomb on his productions and he is no Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Revolution, DJ premiere or Xecutioners. Matt Boogie should stop pretendin' and stick to signin dope ass talent and not frontin' like he'z got talent.

4-0 out of 5 stars better than soundbombing!
this must be one of the best hiphop compilations made in the last few years. despite few mediocre tracks (which prevented me giving this album 5 stars) most of the tracks here are great -brilliant pieces from missing linx (which dre stole for "the next episode") , lootpack, mos def and many more. despite the fact the the "soundbombing" albums are more famous, this collection is probably better!

4-0 out of 5 stars More for the Masses
hey y'all if you havent heard then you need to hear this is an outstanding mix tape of some of the Freshest East and west coast underground and over ground talent..whether it BE in front of the Mic or Behind it on the 1 and 2's this is a phat album ..and the man M Boggie did it up in stlye..

Pick this up if you want a real treat in your hip hop meal..and please..get rid of that junk like JAY-Z and DMX..MAsa P..etc..bad for your health..

Peace

5-0 out of 5 stars I hate to keep giving out 5 stars, but I can't help it.
Here's yet another must have albums for hip hop heads round the world. It has a whole lot of the Peoples and Defari, some of the best MC's this side the Mississippi. The Cali-Agents are on it as well (Rasco and Planet Asia). Them alone are worth the 15 bones. Go pick up their disk when you are scoring this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phat Mixes!

Drawing on their many musical obsessions, Black Rock Coalition founders Vernon (Living Colour) Reid and DJ Logic have teamed up to present a very potent blend of hip-hop, electronica, circus music, blues and soul, dub reggae, and, as is to be expected, full-tilt rock & roll. Front End Lifter offers a fresh set of eclectic vibes that will especially please folks who long for a return to progressiveness on the dance floor. Songs such as the "Secret Agent Man"-like "Ponk" and the African-inflected "Tenemental" explore the trip-hop end of the spectrum, while"Bamalamb," driven by a gritty harmonica riff, mines the '70s blaxploitation era for inspiration. New York underground performer Latasha N. Diggs weaves her sexy vocals through the blistering "Psychopathia Mojosexualis," while the all-star cast of Prince Paul, Slick Rick, Corey Glover, and BRC stalwart Greg Tate add major flavor to the goofy "6996 (Club Yohimbe)," a tune that plays as a satisfying combination of both Digital Underground's "Doowutchyalike" and "Humpty Dance." --Rebecca Levine ... 4-0 out of 5 stars this ain't about the, ahem, wankery people!
in a word: awesome. in a couple of other words, if you are expecting a rock guitarist's album with a turntableist thrown in as window dressing, you will surely be mistaken.

if you are looking for an album that is nearly always interesting, never boring, and is sometimes quite funny, you should pick up "front end lifter".

this is the surprise of the year for me. the things that these two cats can do with their instruments is amazing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't Believe Someone Actually Financed This Release
Music is a very subjective thing, and my fellow Arlingtonite liked this release, but I thought it was horrible. The editorial review mentions "blues and soul" and "rock." This cd has none of those, and I mean NONE. I love Vernon Reid and Living Colour, too, which is the only reason I took a chance on this release, and you wouldn't even know he is even on it. You can barely hear any guitar. If you like techno, then you may like this, if you like Vernon Reid, don't even bother. This is a complete waste of cd space.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful electronic guitar noise
This is a brilliant show of music. Everything from the cd cover art down to the slip case over the cd is wonderful. The music on the inside is the jem though. I've always been a fan of Vernon Reid, even during his days with Living Color. His playing on this album is just an extension of what was on his solo album, Mistaken Identity. Not many DJ's are really interesting to listen to or fully get the creativity for the instrument that they use, but DJ Logic is not one of these artists. He approaches his instrument like a jazz musician, less is more type feel. He know just where to place "notes". This is a wonderful, eclectic little album to jam to, hopefully more will come from these two - together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Funky Minds Thinking Alike
Ten years. Despite traveling in the same artistic circles, and even appearing on each other's solo work, it took a decade for DJ Logic and Living Colour guitarist Vernon Reid to record an album together. It's especially odd now, given the path DJ Logic's career has taken. In the mid-'90s, it would have made perfect sense, working together on Graham Haynes' Transition disc and even Reid's own Mistaken Identity album, the two were almost in the exact same place musically.

But now DJ Logic finds himself among an entirely different crowd. After being "discovered" by Medeski, Martin and Wood on their Combustication album, DJ Logic and his group, Project Logic, were quickly taken up by the jam band community. The only problem is, these bands want to turn Logic into a DMC-style turntablist: wow the crowd with some impressive scratching and be done with it. But, as Reid knows, that isn't his proper role. He is a musical handyman, filling in spaces and touching up grooves with conservative scratches, obscure vocal samples and any other sound he sees fit. There is no machismo here, no concern over dropping listeners' jaws. It's a chance to see two artists realize their full potential after waiting for so long.

When you hear the album, it becomes apparent why they chose to name themselves after Africa's answer to Viagra. The Yohimbe Brothers start things off with Reid, maybe under the influence of the aphrodisiac, putting down a sexually charged guitar riff. Not to be outdone, DJ Logic provides an array of percussionist scratches and effects that matches Reid's intensity. The sexual energy builds even further, as producer Prince Paul (reprising his Handsome Boy Modeling School persona of Chester Rockwell) sends us on a tour with "6996 (Club Yohimbe)". This is probably the closest the album comes to living up to the '70s AFROdisiac feel of the cover art.

As the midpoint approaches, things begin to cool off. The initial excitement has been expelled, and the artists take time to focus on a much gentler, sweeter sound. The slower pace also allows DJ Logic more time to manipulate the music. The echoed vocals and muted horn work of "$moke and Du$t Dub (version)" make it seem as if the song is being carried on the crisp night, instead of your home speakers.

With "Bamalamb" we get a glimpse of what a Black Rock Coalition (the loose confederation led by Vernon and his old band, Living Colour) ho-down would sound like: violin, harmonica and a kick-ass guitar. But it seems that the sexual energy of the yohimbe root is not enough to carry the album all the way through. The tracks grow colder as the Brothers create a vast soundscape of crunching drums, modified guitars and an unending supply of electronic bleeps and blips. But with the mechanized sound comes more improvisation, a nice contrast to the more groove-oriented opening tracks.

This album is the final piece in a vision that was started by Vernon Reid with his Mistaken Identity record. But now Vernon seems to realize that you can't keep an album interesting with simple guitar licks.

All I gotta say about this cd is "WHAT." I have all of Kool keith's previous albums and this one is over the top, there is no singing in this album, no rapping, but there is one thing, Scratching. Keith takesthe words from songs, or places he knows and turns them into a funkadelicalbum that nobody can understand. Following their DJ renaissance compilation Return of the DJ, Bomb Records continues its promise of "all hip-hop DJs, all scratching" with Vol. II. This time it's a global thing, representing Holland, Norway, Canada, and the United States coast to coast. DJ Jeff from Amsterdam almost induces scratch seizures with the carpal-tunnel pace of "Change the Scratch." On "Static's Waltz," Canadian DJ Kid Koala slows the show down to molasses, setting what sounds like 15 records at once to incorrect speeds. Other legends, like DJ Jimmie Jam, Z-trip (who marries Run DMC to Black Sabbath on "Rockstar"), and the X-ecutioners' Roc Raida, represent. However, the most impressive composition is Tommy Tee's "Aerosoul," an anthem to graffiti art that paints its canvas with news commentary and samples from the mighty KRS-One. There's plenty of old and new blood on Vol. II to keep your ears pricked. --Todd Levin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Turntablists Dream
I've been DJing hip hop for around 4 years now and now one single album has influenced me such as this one (also vol #1-3) This album is dedicated to hip hop DJ's and opened the eyes of many as to whats really going on in the underground scene. DJing is one of the four elements of hip hop and is finally back in the open. Tracks like Aerosaul, On Da Flex, and Private Parts are crazy in depth productions. Any true hopper should have this album and for any turntablist, its a requirement!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Return of the DJ, Vol. II
I enjoyed "Return of the DJ, Vol. I" so much, I decided to check out its sequel. Volume II ties DJs from all around the world united with a common theme - a love for hip-hop and scratching. Volume II is as good if not better than Volume I. The album is set up like a tournament with DJs representing their hometowns, each trying to outdo each other. Full of the usual DJ braggadacio and scratching to make your head spin, Volume II pays tribute to all four elements of hip-hop - DJing, MCing, graffiti, and b-boying. And its unlike anything else, repeated listens unveil more and more familiar samples with everything from Mortal Kombat to Cypress Hill to A Tribe Called Quest. Impressive tracks are "Change the Scratch" by DJ Jeff, "Static's Waltz" by Kid Kaola, "Aerosoul" by Tommy Tee, and "Rockstar" by Z-Trip. Fantastic representation of a long-overlooked culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars DJ JEff
If that track with DJ JEff was the only good thing on here, the cd would e worth buying. But it's not the only good track...they ALL are! I just picked up this album last night and it's tighter than nuts & bolts!

5-0 out of 5 stars World War III waged on wax
It's east versus west in Vol. 2 and Bomb Hip Hop Records obviously wanted to showcase turntablism's international appeal here. The first half of the joint is all foreign DJs with the USA representing the 2nd half. But these European spin doctors don't disappoint.

First off, DJ Jeff is WICKED on track 3! I was PARALYZED with disbelief the first time I heard "Change the skratch" in my car. There's NO WAY a human could possibly scratch that FAST. And he juxtaposes the rawnesss of it all with a cool sax in the background to add a nice jazzy effect.

Roc Raida and EQ deliver NY style, cutting up classic beats like butchers. Honestly, the only joint I wasn't feelin was Jimmie's Jam, whose sample just came off corny. On the whole, this album has a more worldly and experimental sound than Vol. 1 and it may require repeated listens to appreciate. But the sound is just as hardcore.

5-0 out of 5 stars EVERY TRACK IS UNBELIVEBILE
IF you don't have this cd order it now it is my favorite cd.Every track is flawless and it never comes out of my cd player. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars There's a seeker born every minute.
I was very pleased with this album. The music is very substantial, and has some cool textures to it. Most of the vocal samples are related to conspiracies, secret organizations, etc. These vocal samples give a nice continuity to the album. I enjoyed hearing Dose One on "Riddles," deliberately placing his words along with the music. I also enjoyed hearing "Black Sabbath" during the big finale. A solid album.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW WORLD ORDER
This album is more than dope beats and samples (and dope they are). It is a looking glass for you to step through, a rabbit hole for you to go down; in short, a message from outside the matrix. Its conspiracy theories may have seemed outlandish and even humorous when this album was released. Nowadays after 9-11 it's more scary than funny. This is the soundtrack to the horror movie called "New World Order." Go ahead, take the red pill - get this album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting sampling, cool stuff
I am not a regular fan of this type of music, I just got this CD for free because a record label I intern at had an extra copy. I'm real glad I grabbed it. I can't really say anything intelligent about the music because I'm not too familiar with the genre, but I can say that it's better than most stuff I hear of this type. I really enjoyed the heavy sampling of conspiracy theory and I found it too be entertaining and often humorous. Plus, the last song features samples from King Crimson (!) and Black Sabbath songs, so that right there gives it some merit.

4-0 out of 5 stars This hip-hop album has a good and unique mixture of beats.
When I first heard this album I wasn't sure of what to think. I listened to certain tracks on it, and then the whole thing. Which almost anyone who gets it will find out they have to do because of the hidden message in their music. What really got me hooked on it was the original beats and the way it flowed together, which i thought was done nicely by DJ JEL and MR DIBBS. The one thing i didn't like was all the sampling. I thought too much was used on some tracks. Overall, this first album has a good unique sound to it. So why should you get this CD? Well, if You like hip-hop, like me, and want to get something different (with an undergroud sound) that hasn't been remixed to shame; this is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Crowning jewel of the Cincinnati hip-hop underground.
This is the future of hip hop, Dibbs, Jel and Dose One deliver you their manifesto on top of and amongst some of the sickest beats you've ever heard. This is not an album of tracks to pick through, but rather a complete work that requires a straight listening. This is perhaps the ultimate compliment in this age of collections of unfinished ideas that are most hip-hop records. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great representation of turntablism, and dreaming as well...
There wasn't a moment where I questioned DJ Shortee's skill throughout my first listen to "The Dreamer." Her scratching, beats, and samples are all on point.

Shortee's usage of sampling is rather interesting, and all the beats are guaranteed headnodders. It's also neat to hear an album revolving around turntablism and dreaming. Two things I find quite intriguing..

5-0 out of 5 stars Shortee has reinvented the turntablist sound .
With DJing growing so fast and the turntablist music soaring to new dimensions so quickly, artists like Q Bert, Mixmaster Mike, Faust, T Rock, Shadow, Mr Dibbs, Disk, Shortee etc. are pioneering the sound and the future of turntable music. If you think about this you'll see there are really only a handful of releases which can be considered this and each has its own unique qualities. Shortee apart from being the first female to put together a turntablist album has taken a new approach to how the music should sound. Combining careful scratch precision with perfectly orchestrated collages of disected sound snippets from a million and one sources Shortee has created a very musical variety of songs ranging from Dub, Downtempo abstract B Boy beats, to Hip Hop and Drum & Bass while still maintaning cut and pasted scratch syncopation all throughout the project. If you are a fan of turntable fables, this is a journey you wont want to miss. The Dreamer is not just another album, it's a story about Shortee, a dream psychosis patient who dicovers that when her brain waves are recorded they are really sound waves. If her dreams aren't recorded they will be lost forever and the album is a rendition of her journeys in dreamland. It's one of the most creative of the tuntablist albums to date and it even comes with the complete story written by Peter Babb. To put it short, Shortee has reinvented the turntablist sound, we can go anywhere if we dream enough. ... Read more

So giving them the chance create a wildly eclectic Mix album seems like a good idea. And the Results???....Incredible, Astonishing, tremendous...and a exceptionally realised project. "Mr Scruff/Boards of Canada/Dj Vadim/Four Tet/Cinematic Orchestra & The X-Ecutioners all make it onto the album, blending 'Trip-Hop/Dance/Breaks/Soul-Funk/Electronica & everything in-between so seamlessly that you wonder why they don't just commit themselves to this sort of thing full-time!!!??, regardless some tracks stand out so brilliantly that they should be released as singles....Ska-Funksters 'The Beat - Mirror in the Bathroom' being mixed with an early 'Roni Size' D&B track....'Most Wanted's' sunshine Funk/Hip-hop hybrid "Calm Down". But the most staggering musical achievement award goes to 'Blackalicious' for the sheer mind-boggling brilliance of "Alphabet Aerobic's" which is possibly one of the most staggering rap Tracks ever made...an truly astounding Mix Album, that rates favourably with "Coldcut's - Journeys By Dj : 70 Minutes of madness".

4-0 out of 5 stars . . . . a masterpiece . . . .
a masterpiece . . . . any Hip-Hop, turntablist or general music fan must own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good. . .
This complilation is based on/inspired by the legendary BBC radio "Solid Steel" know for showcasing a super-eclectic range of DJs. This disc segues from hip hop flavored tracks, to some very hot dance numbers ("Flying Fish" is a standout) with a nice organic, rare grooves sort of feel, to some ambient tracks. I really enjoyed the disc, both on headphones and at a party; the ambient tracks bored me-- too much herbie hancock noodling. Perhaps this is my personal prejudice-- i'm not a fan of fusion-type jazz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I am a huge fan of a large variety of electronic music from Aphex Twin to trance DJs like Sasha. That being said, despite all of the wonderful DJs that I enjoy, none of them compare to the studio mixing ability demonstrated here by DJ Food & DK. Not only is the track selection superb (from a wide range of styles), but also the tracks are melded together perfectly often with two tracks on top of each other and then mixed into another (a great example of this is Mr. Scruff-Ug/DJ Vadim feat. Motion Man-The Terrorist mixed into Peshay-Miles From Home). The hip-hop elements of this disc are far better than anything else I've heard barring perhaps Prefuse73. At the same time, the album continues to evolve into a glittering, ambient sound through jazz legend Herbie Hancock to Art of Noise's Moments in Love. I could go on and on, but the point is if you are open to hearing new sounds and the possibility of a truly dynamic mix, this CD is a MUST HAVE.

4-0 out of 5 stars DJ Fruitopia : Now Listen!
Dj mixed compilations, what can i say. Mediocer dj's will release them in order to raise booking fees, labels fill the market with these discs to make a quick buck. Before long, an entire section of your favorite record store is filled with these. Most have one or two interesting songs, and a whole lotta filler. Usually every song will belong to a very specific genre of dance music. The actual mixing may be nonexistant, just bland songs blindly faded together. The end result is a disc that is worth less than the sum of its parts. Cheer up, this is not your average dj mixed compilation.

Solis Steel is a radio show run by Coldcut, Dj Food, and DK, broadcast in London. It is known for its eclectic taste. This mix is based on the show, with DJ Food and DK mixing up a diverse selection of old, and new. The diversity of dance music is hown with the wide variety of the selection. The disc includes songs you have heard before, like the conscious rap of "Come Clean" by Jeru the Demaja, and other obscure joints such as the brazillain flavor of Dominique Dalcan's "Ritmo 2". The mix is good also, combinig the songs together, no botched beats or missed levels. Some songs are mixed togeher so well that giving them different track numbers is impossible. This is seen as the second wave ska of "Mirror in the Bathroom" is placed on top of the Roni Size produced drum-n-bass of Mask's "Square Off". The variet keeps this disc from getting boring. "Alphabetic Aerobics" by Blackalicious changes tempo from 80 to 135 b.p.m. in less that two minutes. The sixties soundtrack music from Dave McCallum may sound familiar, along with "Assembly Line" by the Commodores, it has been sampled by many artists. Here the disc gives you a musical history lesson. I could say more, but i will just tell you that evary track is good, and the interludes are great.Buy this disc if you want something truly eclectic and you cannot tune in to Solid Steel. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Sadly Non-Representative
Okay to be fair I will break this review into 3 parts.

THE GOOD: The DJ Disk/Buckethead track is[...]Trip music as only they can make. DXT's Cut Transmitter is a nice little DJ+ band track, and Cat Five/Snake Eyez show off the more abstract side of the movement.

THE DESCENT: Okay, first the Rockit remix--I guess I just expected more, especially with that many of the best DJs on it. I guess that's what happens when you mess with a classic. Rob Swift and Eddie Def's contributions were suprisingly average for their immense talents (although this should not be suprising for Eddie Def as the Space Travelerz not only bashed the film, but have admitted they unload their subpar material when it comes to compilations)

THE TRULY WACK: The rest of the material (as classic as some of it is) can be/has been heard in many other places and it was disappointing to pay for it again. It seems that Bill Laswell wanted to combine a history-up-until-now type project (like MTV's "Masters of the 1s & 2s"--only good) and a this-is-the-status-of-the-movement-right-now album (like "Return of the DJ" did in 1995) but in my opinion simply failed. A true "History of Turntablism album", by the devoted for the devoted, would have been the ideal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbi-Herbi
The re-mix of "Rockit" is awesome !!! If you are a Herbie Hancock fan you should not miss this.... Better than ever!

4-0 out of 5 stars The beat, the whole beat, and nothing but the beat...
To quote track 10,"your parents were like ... don't touch the record, you'll ruin it!" All of these artists thankfully ignored that advice. Scratch is a cd that consists of what is usually skipped over: the interludes, breaks, and transitions between other songs. But turntablism is a music in its own right. It is pure, simple, and stripped down to the bare essentials, namely; two turntables and a microphone. It's refreshing to hear the experimentation and originality on all these tracks. Primo's X-ecution, Rockit 2.002, and Turntable Transformer are some of the highlights. If you are a fan of hip-hop, rap, or just good funky beats, this is something you will appreciate. Just imagine great songs with mixing and samples instead of vocals, and you'll get an idea of the overall sound. This will be that album you listen to flush pop music out of your system. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Album
I mainly got this album cuz it featured the Beatnuts. I was not disappointed with it, except I wish this album could have been longer. It's just over 42 minutes. Besides that, It is a great album...dope beats, and features some great rap artists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Album-but not perfect
This album is worth the money,...but, it's too bad that the album is too short. Just over 42 minutes long. But it has great beats and features great artists, including the underrated rap talents, Ju Ju and Psycho Les of the Beatnuts. Well worth checking out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Funky Electronic CD to Date. Not for novice listeners!
I have been listening to Electronic Dance Music since the late 80's and a big fan of Simply Jeff. This cd definitely shows us how a true pioneer gets his name. Simply Jeff once again pushes the envelope and exposes us to the new sound of Funky Breaks, Nu-Skool Breakz, Trance Breaks and Funky House Breaks while throwing in some hard to find classics from 1993. All the top Breakbeat artist of today is on this cd! From Uberzone, Freddy Fresh, Rennie Pilgrem to Dj Icey. It's good to see dj/artist who take a chance an move forward rather than giving us something that is expected. This is why Simply Jeff is one of the busiest djs in the nation! All my music friends agree that this was not made for the average listener but, for people who have been listening to this style of music for a while or for people who listen to many styles of music. This is no doubt, an eclectic cd. You will love the way this cd mixes acoustic and electronic instruments along with uplifting vocals. Truely an epic collage. I love what Simply Jeff did with "Funk-Da-Fried 1 and 2" but, "Funky Instrumentalist" clearly takes it to the next level. Thank you Jeff! If you like Funky Breaks, another cd not to be missed is Simply Jeff presents "RMX" put out by Phonomental.com (Simply Jeff's new label). This cd includes nearly a decade of Funky Break remixes by the man himself. For starters, buy this cd while you can. You will not be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Funk Da Fried
I'm a big Simply Jeff fan, and I have to admit I am a little disappointed with this album--and still I gave it 4 stars! It's not as good as Funk Da Fried V.2, but still a good album. This album will have you dancing, moving, rolling... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All Hail the DJ
Into Hip-Hop rather than just the plain ol' Rap category? Then give this disc a spin. All cuts are great and gives one a nice broad look (er, listen?) or introduction into turntablism. This CD isn't about hardcore raps, bragadoccio boasts, or gangsta leans - this CD is all about showcasing each DJ's skills. And trust me, there a lot of skills on display here.

A lot of people don't know the DJ behind their favorite group or MC, but this is your chance to get more familiar with them. Or at least respect them. A search of the track listing should get you the DJs on the CD - we're not talking Dr. Dre (ex-NWA) or whomever, we're talking true cutmasters like Mixmaster Mike, Babu, and PB Wolf - just to name a few. If you've seen the film SCRATCH then you know who half of these DJs are. This CD is way better than the SCRATCH soundtrack - this is the true greatest hits for DJ's.

Listen and learn, kids. Listen and learn. ... Read more
