3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, not good.
I'd heard "Urban Station" on the Jungle Flavours EP, and I was expecting this album to be along a similar vien.

It was more like some of the other tracks on Jungle Flavours. Atmospheric experimental beats. It was interesting, but not too entertaining.

The best part of this album, other than "Urban Station" is the cover art, you can't go wrong with enraged apes. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Would be four if there was more.
For a 51-minute electronica album to be very good, nearly every track must be very good. This one has some standouts ("Third Eye Remix," "Sore"), but the rest of the album seems to tread water, albeit adeptly. In both the tight drum loops and the occasional laid-bare electronic sounds, Finger can sound like Hardfloor through some stretches, and that should be reason enough to buy the album.

See also the Milk compilation: "Silver Top" for assumedly some from Finger (and much more), and you can see the other review again. (?) This is neither acid jazz nor d&b, though there are tinges of both. This is nicely varied techno, and a small cut above the average act.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine as a whole, but few stand out.
If I'm not mistaken, o previous reviewer, this is a compilation album and indeed no "band" at all. The tracks by Pendulum are my favorites, and refreshing bits of organic sounds are mixed in to create something often more akin to ambient than D&B or acid jazz. It is a good compilation, and its unheard doom is a true shame.

4-0 out of 5 stars more acid jazz than drum'n'bass
i was told this was drum'n'bass.. i was slightly disappointed at first, but this album turned out to be great. very upbeat, with samples that sound very "live". anyway, it's a shame no one seems to know this 'band'. (how are we supposed to call electronic acts??) ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good intro to Bay Area trip-hop
Contrary to what the CD's title and liner notes self-proclaim, this complation works best as a trip-hop piece rather than an excursion into true abstract electronica,(see the Mille Plateaux label.)

A majority of the tracks are based on downtempo beats and noirish atmosphere. So basically any track with the phattest beat is a winner. Examples are the work by Bugs, Dj Wally & Swingsett and T-Cisco. Unfortunately, much of the music gets bogged down in redundancy, giving me an itchy finger on the "skip" button. But overall, compared to its weak sequel, this CD is a nice exhibit of takes on trip-hop. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A BUY!
This Swiss DJ, known for his technical ability is an excellent studio musician. Pay no attention to the review below. Go see this man in action, usually can be found in Zurich. Many thanks to DJ Cam for landing Minus 8 the record deal! Oh and buy this CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars something rolling!! something not quite.....
...the rolling being "full contact" a track by some obscure people/persons called the Bell Air Project!! (some what enigmatic as i couldn't find a single, album: nothing!! not even here on amazon!!!) There are quite a few stand out tracks from the likes of Le Gooster, Diferenz, Skrapel and Mas-p!! Where the plot loses itself is with things like the last track by 4D and others that to my mind should have been cut: most of them not even fitting into the drum and bass style, as the disc proclaims itself a compilation of! The french crew Minus 8 seem to have chucked in the odd rubbish really as fillers rather than keeping to the really fly examples present on the album. the disc should get a three but based on the "full cantact" track its really worth the four stars: worth checking out just for that if you can get your handz on it!! ... In the early '90s, San Francisco's Up & Down Club hosted a small, highly intertwined scene of jazz musicians and rappers probing the new horizons of acid jazz, rooted in the clubs of London, where the style originally connoted a light funk-soul groove made for the dance floor. In the capable hands of these Bay Area hipsters, however, acid jazz sounds a lot jazzier. Up & Down Club Sessions collects live performances by major players captured at the tiny Folsom Street music joint. Volume 1 boasts seven acts, including the seminal guitar-led Charlie Hunter Trio and rapping Alphabet Soup and lesser known outfits like the Dry Look and Kenny Brooks Trio.

Volume 2 adds three more bands, all featuring drummer Josh Jones: Hueman Flavor (with a rapper and singer and Don Cherry guesting on trumpet), the Josh Jones Latin Jazz Ensemble, and the Up & Down All Stars. Pop music listeners will appreciate the Up & Down musicians' general willingness to co-opt familiar styles--a funk bass line, a rock guitar riff--and repeat hooks generously. Rap fans, though, will lament a lack of personality in the rhymers, who mostly blend in with instruments. --Roni Sarig ... Read more
