1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money!
This is the worst CD I have bought in YEARS! Morsheeba seems to have all of the right elements. The music is good, the singing is good, but it does not fit. I think the writing and lyrics are a bit off and may the reason that it does not come together. I am a very open minded person and I look for the good in everything, but just could not find it here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation
After downloading the music (legally, using the new subscription-based Napster), I knew I had to buy this music. But not this album. I hunted down the version mentioned by another reviewer that includes a DVD. It appears on Amazon as "Parts of the Process (CD & DVD) [LIMITED EDITION]." It costs more, but it'll be cool to see the group performing live.

I love the electronica genre because of the near-universal presence of ethereal female vocals.... and this group is the epitome of that!!!

Great job Morcheeba! Keep it coming!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stimulating & Relaxing at the same time , jazzy/acoustic...
This cd or any music of morcheeba's is amazing. You can listen to it at any time, any mood...it fits right in. The singer has a sultry jazzy voice and the music is slower paced but the songs that are more upbeat are very stimulating and still mood inspiring. This is by far the best new band that I've been introduced to in years!

5-0 out of 5 stars This should be a part of your collection!
I have to a admit that I bought this Best Of only because I heard What's Your Name on the radio and I liked it. I didn't appreciate Morcheeba much but hearing this album made me change my mind. They're songs are absolutely wonderful.
They're strongest at the ballads (The Sea, Otherwise, Blindfold, Part Of The Process, Undress Me Now, Over And Over, What New York Couples Fight About, World Looking In). The special ones for me are The Sea and Part Of The Process. Since I live by the sea I don't need to explain the first song, but the other has wonderful lyrics (I don't realize how good lyrics they can write), it simply touches something in you. What New York Couples Fight About is a great song. We were all in love so we can relate to it.
But the "happy" songs are good too. Especially What's Your Name and Rome Wasn't Built In A Day. Actually Rome... was they're first hit.
The special edition album includes a bonus DVD. It contains 3 live performances from they're Live At Brixton Academy DVD (The Sea, Part Of The Process, Trigger Hippie).

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy listening...with style
It's a really nice album. You can listen to it for hours without getting tired. The style of Morcheeba is unique and is getting better and more sophisticated with the time. I strongly recommend it as an icon of POP music for this 2003. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MUSIC FOR THE PEOPLE
Etro Anime music is hard to describe. With the Cuban born Lissett Alea as the lead vocalist, they provide listeners with an array of sounds. Whether it's the jazzy sound of Diablo or the pop sound of Endless, SEE THE SOUND has a song for everyone. If you like house music, jazz, pop, or dance, this CD would be an added addition to your collection. The music is neo-electric and with the talented members of Etro Anime playing their hearts out and Lissett's hypnotizing voice, you will not be disappointed with SEE THE SOUND.

ETRO ANIME is a group to keep your eye on.

5-0 out of 5 stars The hotness
This is one of the best cd's I have ever heard. Hot vocals and the borrowed influences of DnB, Trip-Hop, and Jazz flow nicely and it all has a realxed feel to it. Definetly the Cd to play when you are chillin with a few of your friends when having a cocktail.

4-0 out of 5 stars Makeout Music
What starts with an E, features an ethereal-sounding, heavily processed female lead, and blends trip hop with live drum-n-bass elements? Etro Anime of course, a five-piece whose keyboardist Ted Birkey has rubbed shoulders with Doc McKinney, the man behind similar-sounding Toronto act Esthero. The 13 tracks of "See the Sound" (there are two hidden ones) showcase Lissette Alea's sexy vocals and the group's perfect balance of organic and electronic elements. There's a lot of machinery and effects in the mix, but the tracks never sound mechanical or cluttered. Favorites: "Summer Rain," featuring an old school disco beat, and "Danger," with its hyperkinetic percussion and Sade-esque sax break. Fans of LTJ Bukem, ETBG, Lamb and the like should check this one out. And if you're looking to get it on, put "See the Sound" on repeat while someone of opposite sex is in the room and see what happens.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome undiscovered gem!!
One of my favorite CDs of all time! I luckily stumbled upon this CD at a record store listening booth and can't believe I've never heard of the group before. The music can best be described as electronic jazz, but the female vocals are somewhat reminiscent of Sade, without being as mainstream or commercial as Sade. Very sexy stuff! Listen to it and fall in love. ... Read more

Alpha--Corin Dingley and Andy Jenks--are among the best of the trip-hop generation. Signed to Massive Attack's Melankolic label, their debut owes debts to Scott Walker, Burt Bacharach, and John Martyn, weaving shreds and swatches into something new. Yes, it is downbeat, the kind of music for long, lonely nights, but it is absolutely perfect for those nights. Guest vocalists help out as Dingley and Jenks manipulate the sounds and the strings, fill it all out beautifully. Crafted and inspired, one of '97's standouts. --Chris Nickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Caramel coated, cinnamon scented
Any time I see a CD title that alludes to heavenly origins, I'm immediately suspect. But that's not the case here. Every song on this CD is so delicate and ethereal that it's barely there...a beautiful whisper. An earlier reviewer said that "Come From Heaven" reminded him of "a warm spring day in an endless field of grass with nowhere to go and nothing to do but exist." That description was the clincher in my buying decision and this CD lived up to every word of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lounge variant on the Trip-Hop genre.
Those who listen to this CD and expect to hear something like the groundbreaking Portishead will not be entirely disappointed, but don't expect an exact clone. That's rather good, I think. Alpha takes the Trip-Hop genre into lounge territory with a sound that is somber, yet not so gut-wrenching.

2-0 out of 5 stars Looking for the song from "My Life Without Me?"
FYI - My Life Without Me has no soundtrack available. But imdb.com gave me enough info to at least pin down this song. "Sometime later" from this album is what's playing at the end credits of My Life Without Me. (And the song playing in the car when Lee and Ann kiss is "Senza Fine", I forget the artist.)

You know, I purchased this CD in 1997, and I listened to it all the time because I just loved it. Well, I went about a year without listening to this CD, and then I picked it up yesterday, and it just kicked me in the stomach all over again. A review just doesn't do this CD justice, you have to listen to it to experience it. That's what this CD is, an EXPERIENCE. ... Read more

Album Description

On their third full-length album, genre bending duo Hungry Lucy prove to us, yet again, that the confines of one musical style just won't contain them. "To Kill a King" seamlessly traverses the musical spectrum from somber darkwave to catchy pop without missing a beat.

Fans of Hungry Lucy's first two releases, "Apparitions" and "Glo", will not be disappointed with this fresh batch of inspired electro-organic productions crowned with Christa Belle's haunting voice.

The title track, "To Kill a King" couples a driving Depeche Mode styled production with emotional female vocals. While "Rainfall" evokes the electrified songwriter feel of Dido or even Madonna in her more contemplative moments. The uplifting vibe of "Shine" pulls together elements from around the globe with a soaring vocal melody. The melancholy "Good Girl" is a stripped down piano & vocal wonder that tugs hard at your emotions, while the pure synthetic "High Price of Mistakes" manages to sound icy cold, yet emit a warm glow all at once.

It's this type of beautiful contrast that Hungry Lucy are passionate about, and fully demonstrate on "To Kill a King". Their talent for blending the familiar with the exotic captures you at first listen and leaves you wanting more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You really need this one
Undoubtedly magnificent and absolutely radiant. Quixotic speaks to the soul, resonating deep within you. it provides a journey of truely heart felt lyrics, elegance combined with a laid back trip-hop sound, subtle sultry soul, with a certain rock punch. Martina Topley Bird captivates her listeners with a voice that engrossers, her sensual innocence takes a hold of you and leaves you wanting more. Yes, her voice that you've heard sooo much about, words and descriptions really can't do it any justice, just trust us and listen to her for yourself. personal favourites: cruisey Soulfood that showcases her luxuriously smokey vocals, a slightly more charging and rocky Too Tough To Die, I absolutely love Lying, possibly my absolute favourite on the album, theres an effortless beauty that leaves a smile on my face and the deep full sounding llya. Quixotic is nothing but a beautiful offering from Martina Topley Bird. It hits you just where a perfect cd is suppose to. What i love is that Martina is humble and delicate while a power and strength is still behind her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant.
The haunting songtress of Tricky's albums: Maxinquaye, Nearly God, Pre-Millenium, Angels With Dirty Faces and Ruff Guide finally steps out on her own. This album as highly anticipated by Tricky fanatics worldwide (including myself), and this album was very very satisfying. The tracks vary from chillout trip hop, to jazzy soul, to 'almost' rock, and she does not disappoint her fans. Certainly an album to have on your shelf. Independiente should make a US album, because Martina does have (new) fans here!

5-0 out of 5 stars simply phenomenal.
at once sensual, atmospheric and moody, plus it is really hard to ignore the towering 'needone' and the black magic of 'lullaby'. martina is surrounded by good company -- david holmes, queens of stone age, tricky, among so many others -- and deservedly so for such a creative force. plus she is a fox to boot.
oh that voice, everyone exclaims.
except this time, please believe the hype. it woule be unlikely that many better CDs will be found this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've no words! It's the best album I've recently heard!
When I first heard Martina backing Maxinquaye for Tricky I took to her voice much. Always thought it would be a good idea to make a solo album. Finally I own it. Can't stop listening to it for last two days! Superb material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Excellence!
I don't think it is possible to describe, with accuracy, exactly how fantastic this album is. THAT VOICE!!!! Incredible. Simply a must hear and a must have.

You won't be disappointed, this album is an essential. ... Read more

An old music-press adage claims that second albums are notoriously "difficult." If this were true, then Every Day should be one big disappointment. The fact that it's arguably one of 2002's finest jazz albums (yes, jazz--as in real, old-fashioned, clarinets-and-trumpets jazz) proves how talented Jason Swinscoe's Cinematic Orchestra are. Following up their impeccable debut, Motion, was going to be tough, but they've surpassed themselves here. While the former was a fusion of sample-culture smoky, backroom jazz, Every Day is jazz pure and simple--old jazz for the nu-jazz generation. "Man with the Movie Camera," "Burnout," and "Flite" are near-perfect soundtrack jazz pieces: epic, shuffling, ever shifting. "All That You Give" and "Evolution" highlight the enchanting vocals of legendary soul singer Fontella Bass. Best of all, though, is the Roots Manuva collaboration "All Things to All Men"--proof that jazz and rap aren't as strange bedfellows as some may think. It's spellbinding stuff and sure to be one of 2002's finer albums. --Matt Anniss ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!
This is some of the best musicianship I've ever heard! J. Swinscoe and Phil France, the main guys, worked very well together to bring out this top notch album. The rhythm and melodies are unequaled only by their first album. This one paves the way for more works with featured Mcs, singers. "Burn Out" and "All Things to All Men" are beautiful songs, while "Everyday" hints at the African type music that Swinscoe wants to explore. Every song is a masterpiece. When you hear the Cinematic Orchestra, you'll awaken to a higher level of music that emits powerful fresh air.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cinematic at their best.
What can I say? Having listened to their previous works I can say that this album is probably the pinnacle of their career so far. This time around they seem more confident and comfortable with their sound thus incorporating more elements of other genres and vocalists (Fontella Bass... anybody remember "Rescue Me"?... and Roots Manuva). The newest orchestral addition is a harp played by Rhodri Davis which complements Fontella's voice quite nicely to say the least. The percussion on this album is also superb. Just listen to the drumming of L. Flowers on 'Flite' and you will soon find yourself in a different world. I shouldn't drop any song names since they're all cut from the same fine cloth. 'Every Day' is just too good for words, the only way to experience it is by listening. If you liked 'Motion' and 'Remixes' you will love this one. Go get yourself a copy yesterday and indulge.

5-0 out of 5 stars very moving music!
I already owned and loved "Motion" when I went to the "International Jazz Festival" in Montreal and saw that "Cinematic Orchestra" was performing, along with the "Gotan Project", at the "Metropolis". I was not as familiar with "Gotan Project" but I knew I really enjoyed "Cinematic Orchestra" from listening to "Motion" so I went. All of a sudden all the planets lined up and time stood still! I was completly blown away by both groups but especially "Cinematic Orchestra". The music, the setting, the apreciative and energetic vibe in the room -it was a seminal event for me.
I have attended many concerts in the years I have been going to this excellent festival and I often buy the CD of an artist whose show I really enjoyed. More often than not what I enjoyed in the live show has not translated well to CD -even after invoking my 5 listen rule (something I recommend to anyone before discarding a CD they think they don't enjoy). "Everyday" (I also bought and love "Man With A Movie Camera" by this group) is, however, every bit as fantastic on CD as the live show. As is mentioned often in other reviews here, these are very accomplished musicians who are performing there craft a very high level. The drummer in particular is excellent. I had zero-ed in on this while listening to "Motion" and at the show I noticed that they featured the drummer, Luke Flowers, by putting the drumset front center on the stage. A clear indication that they share my sentiment that he is something special
Each of the 7 songs on ""Every Day" is a finely crafted piece of art that takes elements of R&B, D&B and Hip-Hop in varing degrees on each cut and blends them into a base of smoky hot nu-bop jazz. Other reviewers here have done a good job of documenting the highlights of the individual tracks so I won't. Overall, the best live show I've seen in....maybe ever! and certainly the best CD of the year -for jazz and/or any of the electronica sub-genres.

5-0 out of 5 stars Electronica & Orchestral Arrangement meet in Unison....
After the orchestra styles of previous album "Motion", the Cinematic Orchestra move the goal post slightly to incorporate Jazz & vocals on most of their tracks to with a majestic confidence...(although several non-vocal orchestral tracks still remain for purists), and this is definitely a step in the right direction for the band, with "Flite's" scratchy sampling, to soul singer 'Fontella Bass's' revelatory vocals stamping authority over every track she features on...even 'Ninja Tune' Mainstay "Roots Manuva" lends his gritty urban vocals to "All Things To All men", which sees Roots eulogizing over a orchestral number to staggering effect...again The Cinematic Orchestra provide an album that is the prefect synergy of Live percussion, String Arrangements, accomplished composing, and proficient programming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome just about sums it up..
"A grand sound" - thats the way that I would describe the music on this CD. I bought Every Day after listening to just two track snippets, and I am not disappointed. Its a perfect mixture of sweeping jazz-like themes and vocal tracts that will knock your socks off. I plan to buy more C.O. CDs. ... Read more

With the release of Ananda Project’s Relight, rediscover and revisit classic songs from the group’s heralded sophomore full-length Morning Light.Atlanta-based internationally-acclaimed producer / composer / remixer and DJ, Chris Brann (of Wamdue Project / P’TAAH fame), is the mastermind behind the Ananda Project collective.Their eclectic, exotic and sensuous deep house sounds continue to inspire and enchant discerning music lovers worldwide.

The continuously mixed Relight is designed to arouse the senses in any setting. It’s not just music for DJs and the dancefloor; it’s also an ideal soundtrack for the international jet-set, trendy "fashionistas", late-night post-clubbers and taste making retailers / boutique hotels / cafes / restaurants and lounges. The 13-song set features 5 exclusive Relight re-rubs from Brann, alongside 4 new recordings and "crate essential" remixes (of select Morning Light singles) from Eric Kupper ("Kiss Kiss Kiss"), DJ Spinna ("ICU") and Aquanote aka Gabriel Rene of Soulstice ("Justice, Mercy").It also includes the bonus G-Pal New York Mix of "Falling For You" (from the group’s classic debut Release).Available for the first time on cd, this coveted club anthem continues to be a floor-filler and DJ favorite, recently heard in sets by international house music heavyweights like Danny Tenaglia, Deep Dish and Pete Tong. 4-0 out of 5 stars Deep House - Nice Project
Ananda Project is Chris Brann, Julius Speed, Terrance Downs, and Heather Johnson.Probably most known will be Chris Brann of Wamdue Project and P'Taah fame. With that tid-bit of information, you have a bit of what to expect. They're home on King Street Sounds and share the platform with a handful of stellar soulful house artists and DJ's from Kerri "Chaos" Chandler to the stellar Yukihiro Fukutomi.

This is the remix project to "Morning Light".It's a double disc mixed set with some killer remixes to Ananda Projects top cuts and has a few extras thrown in there on disc 2.CD1 kicks in after a nice intro with "Secrets", giving you a sense of what to expect with some smooth house."Everything You Are" is givin an "Atlanta Rising" remix (they're based out of Atlanta). It's got a pretty neat beat and city feel to it.It's followed up appropriately with "Big Boat" and one of my favorites on the album, "Suite Dreams", a song that's everybit it's name."I Hear you Dreaming" has a sort of tribal beat to it, while "Justice, Mercy" remixed by Aquanote is the obvious staple. The premier track on disc one, IMO, is DJ Spinna's interpretation of "ICU".Soul, soul soul!Disc Two is more of a compilation of some of their works as a whole, from 98-05'.But it does feautre a few cuts from disc one just to highlight the album as a whole and it's got three exclusive tracks to wind down the set, including a remix done by Kyoto Jazz Massive.

If you're a fan of Naked Music (Aquanote, Aya, Miguel Migs, Carte Blanche, Nude Dimensions, etc.) or Danny Krivit's latest "In the House" set, you HAVE to get your hands on this.HOWEVER I have to warn that this wasn't without a few missteps - some of the cuts are well chopped short, like "Justice, Mercy", and if you want it unmixed it might be best to just get the 12".And then CD1, to me, sort of tapers off in quality after "Kiss Kiss Kiss" while disc two just doesn't get as much rotation with me for whatever reason.Again, this cd is mixed so the cuts aren't really stand-alone.But the vibe in it is very consistent, very dark, and very cool.Other than the Naked Music & Danny Krivit tracks, check out KSS's compilation "Abstract Jazz Journey" to get a hint of the label - the Diviniti cut will blow you away. You might also like a few pieces from the Bargrooves series and Afterdark: New York. ... Countless copycats have landed on the bandwagon since Josh Davis's debut, Endtroducing..., wreaked havoc in the dance and hip-hop world. But Davis, a.k.a. DJ Shadow, kept on top of his game with various collaborations--Blackalicious, U.N.K.L.E., Cut Chemist--and superlative 12-inches like "High Noon" and "Pre-Emptive Strike."

Now, a full six years later, he's back with a follow-up that is every bit as impressive as his debut, albeit in a different way. Once again, the producer has pushed his sampler to the limits, but this time he's brought with it a deeper, hungrier, more bad-ass spirit that's rarely found in modern dance music. There's a fabulous '80s vibe throughout (principally on tracks like "Monosylabik" and "You Can't Go Home Again"), along with the expected forays into b-boy culture (check the growling, massive "Treach Battle Break" and the funky-ass "Mashin' on the Motorway"). While it's identifiably Shadow, it ain't Endtroducing...Part 2. It is, however, a worthy and imaginative follow-up, with humor, wisdom, and musical understanding aplenty. --Paul Sullivan ... 4-0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars. The Shadow is back ! (First Spin Review)
I'm a big fan of Endtroducing. It a classic for electronic, jazz and soul music out there. I've just picked up Private Press a few hours ago and i'm currently writing this review under a "first spin" perspective. First impressions are...

1) Definitly still has the "Shadow Theme" that means listening to it I can still pick up all the Shadow signiture. Piano and spoken work bits are still visible. Rustic vinly sound still prominant in some songs. However, the sound feels more refined compared to Endtroducing. The songs sounds more "processed". I don't think this is a bad element. Its just a different side of the Shadow's artistic skills.

2) It's not as dark as Endtroducing.

3) Shadow's "epic" song structures are still intact.

4) Feels less cohesive. Not a bad thing ! Private Press unlike Endtroducing is more diverse in its soundscape. Endtroducing had one theme running through teh album where as Private Press is more diverse in themes. But don't get me wrong it's still a cohesive album just more diverse in sounds compared to Endtroducing.

5) The latter part of the album exhibits a slight 80s groove. However altered to sound fresh.

conclusion: Great Album... I can already tell that the second spin should reveal even more intresting tidbits on this album. The album definitly sound like the Shadow. It still has the structure of Endtroducing but refined to open a whole new soundscape for the Shadow

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent
I find this album as beautiful as endtroducing. It doesn't have the consistency of endtroducing, but there are pieces which have more depth. Of course, there are some irritants too in here, but there are majesty and grandeur too. here's a song by song.
Tracks 1 and 14: Openers and closers respectively. Fillers.
Track 2(Fixed Income): Vintage shadow. Fat beats. Tight production. Good melody. Gets one star for the album.
Tracks 3 and 4: Barely listenable. Maybe shadow tried experimenting. But its a failed experiment. Doesn't quite appeal.
Track 5(Giving up the ghost): Awesome beginning. Builds majestically till about 3 minutes 16 seconds when the irritating organ comes in and jarrs on the nerves. Mr. shadow, please don't destroy such a beautiful idea by experimenting midway with it next time. And please keep producing songs of the level of the first half of this song. This song alone made me a fan of your music. (I listened to endtroducing later). Earns the album a star and a half in rating.
Track 6 (Six days): Good song. Would have been a hit if it got more airplay perhaps. but isn't a warm song. fits well with the album but somehow doesn't end up standing well on its own. Earns the album half a star in rating.
Track 7 and 8: No idea why its two different tracks. Time-pass music. Doesn't lead anywhere after what seems to me to be a promising beginning.
Track 9: Forgettable back-ground music. I thought "Shadow seems to have run out of ideas at this point".
Track 10 and 11: Irritating. I thought"I am sure shadow has run out ideas. My money has all gone waste".
Track 12 (Blood on the motorway):the track that earns the sobriquet "Magnificent" for the album. the track that made me a life-long fan of shadow. I agree that the sepulchral voice put me down initially, but the piano and the strings in the later part of the song are ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. Uplifting, organic, spiritual music. No one can listen to such music and not be stirred. Mr. shadow, thanks for this AMAZING song. Please produce more like it. Earns atleast two stars for the album in rating.
Track 13: Nice track. But stops abruptly when it is building in complexity. Earns the album another half star.

Overall, an album to be cherished and treasured. And Mr. shadow, please don't make your fans wait another five years for a new solo album. Please give us something introspective and inspiring as u gave with this album, we need it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Kept Secret in the Music Industry.
For his second real album (I think of Preemptive Strike as a compilation rather than a cohesive unit), DJ Shadow delves even deeper into his fascination with eerie samples and odd voices. The Private Press is not quite as brilliant as his debut, but DJ Shadow still knows how to put together a gorgeous, torpid patchwork of sound that is instantly identifiable as his own.

The first song on the album, "Fixed Income," is classic DJ Shadow. He takes the march of a drum beat and marries it to some mysterious acoustic guitar samples (including something that may have come from a Spaghetti Western) and an ominous bass. Throw in a voice here and there and you've got the direct descendant of Endtroducing's "Midnight in a Perfect World." Wicked and addictive.

Skipping ahead, "Giving Up the Ghost" is a tough name for a song to live up to, but Shadow delivers in spades. Disenchantment, disillusion, doubt, regret -- all conveyed by one sample in a loop that makes up the first sixty seconds. I find that this song gets stuck in my head when I get in that kind of a mood. Extremely evocative and more than a little sad.

This is followed by the shimmering torpor of "Six Days," and the fast-paced but downright creepy "Mongrel...Meets His Maker." A single meandering guitar ties the song together, augmented by a flute, a piano, and a ringing telephone(!) Along the same lines, "Blood on the Motorway" brings to mind the morbid transcendentalism of "What Does Your Soul Look Like, part 2," but with some decidedly 80s-ish samples used to achieve the effect. That three-second silence speaks volumes, like the transition from life to death or ignorance to knowledge. Hypnotizing and profound without being maudlin or heavy-handed.

Shadow provides some up-tempo sounds as well ("Walkie Talkie," "Mashin' on the Motorway") but let's face the obvious: he's at his best when gazing at his navel. I don't know if he is hip hop, trip hop, or just a renegade genius. But there is no one else like him making music today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very impressive.
I'm not a huge fan of this style of music, but I love this disc. So many different styles are explored by DJ Shadow on this disc and it all works very well to keep me entertained. I'm giving it four stars and, although I am certainly not an authority on electronica/techno/house, I do enjoy many of these modern sounds and DJ Shadow is among the best I've heard.

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy successor
DJ Shadow is perhaps the most innovative musician of the latest decade, at least of those, who received relatively noticable attention. With his debut, "Endtroducing", he created a whole new genre of instrumental hip-hop music entirely made of samples. His rare talent and attention to details ensured that even now "Endtroducing" stands as a template for such music, and nobody succeeded in getting anywhere close to it. Following such a success often proves impossible for artists. Did Shadow manage to do it?

On "Private Press" Shadow leaves that specific retro-feel of "Endtroducing" behind him, and goes for a modern sound. It results into more variety to tracks, and even addition of a vocal part in a couple of them. He strays further away from hip-hop and funky rhythms of his debut, successfully adding a touch of rock, and electronica beats. DJ Shadow tries to create an aural adventure, a sonic movie of sorts, and I'd say the results are fairly good. Spoken samples add to the "adventure feel".

But on the down side of this variety, this record doesn't sound as consistent as the debut, because not all the ideas really work. To me, personally, the addition of a singer is a very questionable novelty (it's what killed the creativity in Chemical Brothers). While Shadow manages to pull it with taste, the tracks "Walkie Talkie" and "Six Days" are not equal to the rest of the album. And somehow they spoil the flow of the musical adventure. Other than this relatively small gripe, the album is very good. It's great to see Shadow is still as creative and perfectionistic musician, as he proved he was in 1996. I'm looking forward to hearing more from him in future. ... Read more

Album Description

Glo continues the Hungry Lucy tradition of mellow grooves, catchy melodies and Christa Belle's enchanting vocals. This album branches out a even further into blues & jazz in "Storm" and "Open Window", celtic on "In the Circle" and classic torch song on the emotional "Stay".

Glo also features a second CD containing remixes from Claire Voyant, Aiboforcen, bloodWIRE, ThouShaltNot, trigger10d, Chandeen, Dreamside, Neikka RPM and Kew. The remixes range from club friendly bum shakers to ambient soundtracks. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Glo again.
I fell in love with Hungry Lucy after their first album "Apparitions". Such beautiful haunting lyrics and dark music just captured me completely. Their second effort "Glo" is another step forward for the duo. The songs are a lot slower and seem to lack the "goth" feel that their first album had. This album is def. worth a listen though, as there are some worthwhile songs and the remix cd that comes with is brilliant. My only problem with the CD is alot of the songs sound the same, in contrast to "Apparitions". But I think Hungry Lucy is just growing as a band and trying different things, I look forward to their next release!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great but not that great
Half good, half bad. For a duo which are renowned for producing catchy goth electro and are starting to emerge from the underground, I expected a fair bit more - especially after hearing "Bound In Blood" (which is a superb track). Some of the tracks on this album are so positive and sentimental it's like listening to the cheesiest pop music and that's very disappointing. I want misery and pessimism! The opening track, "Could It Be", would have to be the best track on the entire album. "Fearless" sounds a lot like an early Madonna song, Christa's vocals even sound very similar to Madonna. "Telltale Shot" is truly one of the most beautiful melancholy goth tracks I've ever heard. It's a shame that pretty much all the other tracks, including "In The Circle", all sound too much alike and the album gets very boring quite quickly. The fact that Hungry Lucy are capable of producing such fantastic and original tracks such as "Bound In Blood", "Could It Be" and "Telltale Shot" makes you wonder why the rest of this album is so bad as they have great potential. If it wasn't for the few good tracks and remixes, not to mention Christa's amazing voice, nothing would save this album from being a complete dud. I anticipate a much better third album.

1-0 out of 5 stars Glo
I just went for it and bought the CD but I'm not really impressed, not that she doesn't have talent...it's just not a very good album. She could do better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Album
I was in the mood to branch out and try some different "off the beaten path" music that had catchy female vocals and bought this CD based on the recommendations here.

I'm quite pleased with the quality of this album. Production qualities are top notch, most of the songs have a haunting somberness with strong, ringing vocals from the duets female vocalist. The remix CD (2nd disc included) nicely balances this out with jazzed up remixes of several of the tracks on the first CD.

It is apparent that Hungry Lucy is a pretty underrated band and will only get better with subsequent releases.

If you're looking for something different, something that is both relaxing and catchy to listen to, then this CD might be a good choice for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Can't remix beauty, but this comes close
If you enjoued TANTO TEMPO, picking up the remix album is mandatory. Lots of great material on here, including remixes from Mario Caldato (of Beastie Boys fame) and Da Lata. Each of the producers take her original songs and attempt to bring her into their world, with much success.

4-0 out of 5 stars ANYTHING FROM BEBEL I'LL BUY!!
I'm a Bebel Gilberto fan. Her voice & style is truly awesome!! I bought this album on pre-sale, knowing that at least it'd be good...and it's very good indeed, although the original Tanto Tempo album is the "masterpiece", no doubt (it deserves more than five stars). The remixes are lively, most of them electronic-techno-oriented (of course), but do not surpass the original versions, with one exception: "Bananeira", which in my opinion improves on the original. Other remixes that stand appart from the lot are Mario Caldato's "So Nice" (I love this song)and Faze Action's "Close your Eyes", because they tend to "capture" the brazilian flavor and do not differ too much from the originals. In the totally electronic-techno-oriented trend, Peter Kruder's "Tanto Tempo" is the best. If you are a Bebel fan, this one must be in your collection. We're waiting for the follow-up to "Tanto Tempo"!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just great!
I actually heard these remixes BEFORE hearing the originals, inspired to buy the CD after hearing it play in the music store. Now it's a favorite, along with the original. Both are outstanding, in my "Top 5, play anytime" list. Heartily recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Cruisin' Music
Well, this album didn't make my eyes roll back into my head or anything (then it would have most certaily received a 5-star rating) but it is great for cruisin' for a long period of time and will most certainly keep the skies blue for a couple of twenty-somethings trapped in a car. (I like it better than the original 'Tanto Tempo' album now...)

2-0 out of 5 stars Two + too = two
Two reasons why it took two years to review Tanto Tempo. I wanted to like it because Amazon.com and my husband recommended it. Two reasonably reliable sources.

Two talented parents equal talented offspring? Two songs I liked, Bananeira and August Day Song. The rest of the cd was too new age-y and too Yanni-like. Too much work was required to like Bebel's work. I gave it two stars. ... Read more

Prior to the breakthrough success of their second album, Vertigo, Groove Armada (Tom Findlay and Andy Cato) were better known as successful club DJs, plying their trade in clubs the length and breadth of England, from Tangled in Manchester to the End in London. For their first mix CD they eschew uptempo dance-floor tunes in favor of a far more laid-back repertoire--think "At the River" rather than "If Everybody Looked the Same." It's an eclectic mixture of classic and modern--from Barry White to Tears for Fears, stopping at all stations along the way. Unlike many of these kinds of compilations, there's not a duff track on here, and standouts like Al Green's "Light My Fire" and Tony D's "Piano Grand" make the cherry on top. Vertigo was justifiably lauded as the Best Chill-Out Album at the U.K.'s Ministry Magazine Awards in 1999; Back to Mine is a worthy heir to the throne. --Helen Marquis ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent mixed compliation CD with easy mellow grooves
I can't really recall why I bought this CD - I think that I had heard good things about Groove Armada and didn't realize that this CD was a compliation of songs that they like via the Back To Mine collection. The first time that I listened to this CD- I instantly liked every song. The variety of tunes is great, but really well mixed together. It listens like a complete album all the way through. If you like mellow but slightly upbeat R&B with a little bit of techno, then this album is definitely for you. Great for listening while doing stuff at home or at work.

4-0 out of 5 stars mellow, juicy, sexy
This is my first Groove Armada cd and I have to say I was expecting something a little more mixed, but this cd has not left my player! I love it, I don't know about any of their other works, but if you are lookin for some downtempo, juicy, groove you have found a winner. You cannot go wrong with Barry White and Al green will never let you down. A great cd to chill to, with a glass of wine at the end of a long day. Also this cd will not get "played out", like some newer music sometimes does. These are classics you can keep forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars About as good as ambient music gets.
I have bought this CD at least 5 times. Two of them are still in my custody (one worn and scratched to near oblivion), the rest, well, all given away reluctantly or borderline "stolen" by those that "have to have" this CD.

I entertain allot, this almost always makes rotation for pre-dinner appetizers, or post dinner games (of the board kind). I wouldn't do at dinner time because there are a handful of songs that are a bit too hard (this CD isn't 100% chillout, there are a handful of uptempo tracks). Nevertheless, this CD is a winner.

Their newer CD (Love Box) is excellent, but in my opinion not as good as this one. If you love the downtempo element of this CD, I'd recommend Air (the group), or Zero 7. If you like the uptempo aspect, I'd take a look at some cool Mushroom Jazz (like Mark Farina).

Hope this was helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best chillout CDs
In my opinion this is one of the best chillout CDs to come out of the "back to mine" series. The collection here is simply captivating (say eclectic?) and if it doesnt get your head bopping 3 minutes down the first track then I cant help it. If you are a big fan of Chillout or even if you are not but need a CD to play for one of those after-party group who come to your place at 4am to finish off your chardonay then this would be the bomb to play. I have 12 of the 16 BTM CDs released so far and this one ranks #1 in the list. Tom and Andy have definately shown their best musical taste here and if you are a GA fan then this collection will show you what exactly they listen to and like.

3-0 out of 5 stars 50/50 I agree
I agree with what another reviewer said about this CD being 50/50. I loved half the songs, but the other half got on my nerve endings. Overall, it wasn't worth keeping, so I turned around and sold the CD after listening to it once or twice. I was dissapointed and would not recommend anyone buying it. ... Read more

Morcheeba were once the dreamiest bass-heavy, slow funk-oriented group in all of trip-hopdom, as anyone who's spent time with their 1998 sophomore album, Big Calm, will attest. Fragments of Freedom begins interestingly enough, with the languorous, slide guitar-enhanced track "World Looking In." But things go awry from there; the lyrics are so daft and pale, and the R&B-lite arrangements so limp, that the listener keeps waiting for the group to bust out laughing, then introduce the real music. "Let It Go," with its faux-inspirational chorus and tepid keyboard runs, sounds like the Euro-club music they might play at Epcot Center. By the time Biz Markie shows up with a short, sweet track of old-school boasting halfway through, it's far too late to save this CD. Freedom sounds like a misdirected attempt to reach a larger audience; the result is as appealing as cotton candy that's been dipped in maple syrup, covered with vanilla frosting, and then dropped in the sand. Recommended only as a clear example of how not to make interesting dance-pop with wide appeal. --Mike McGonigal ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Let me think...
Hmmm...maybe nobody else thought of this, but don't you think that maybe Morcheeba is PURPOSELY TRYING to be corny? I mean, you can't write a song like "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day" and not smirk to yourself. No, I have never heard their music before, but I really liked "Rome..." on an internet radio station and I found the album (plus a bonus disc) at a used CD store. So, I figured, why not? Well, songs like "World Looking In" and "A Well Deserved Break" are refreshing as well as the hip hop tracks "Love Sweet Love" and "In the Hands of the Gods". A lot of the material also sounds like something Macy Gray would sing. I also believe that the truly awesome "Shallow End" is a tune Jamiroquai would kill to get their hands on. True, I probably picked a CD that sounds nothing like their other work, but, hey, at least I'm interested in hearing more of their stuff. "Charango", here I come.

(The bonus disc almost completely makes up for any low points "Fragments..." might have. The first track is an excellent remix of "In the Hands of the Gods", the next being the Frogmarched mix of the title track, but they've saved the best for last: Morcheeba's own twist on the oldies fav "Crystal Blue Persuasion"! If you're able to find "Fragments..." with this bonus disc, get it!!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Yeah, it's not Big Calm but if Morcheeba came out with another Big Calm, you would've said, "Aw, they didn't progress at all; they're just using the same formula."

Anyway, it's hard to dismiss an album simply because it may not live up to the expectations of the general public. After I bought the album and listened the first time, I was a bit disappointed, as I am with most new releases. It just takes some time to get used to something new. Shortly afterwards though, upon further listening, I did come to appreciate the musicianship on this album. If this was the first time you'd heard of Morcheeba, it'd be an impressive debut. Fragments of Freedom is definitely more upbeat. The album moves away from the Tricky and Portishead references Morcheeba has been plagued with during their career. The album is upbeat, jovial, and still focused, though slightly scattered. The introduction of horns and Biz Markie are examples of this.

Overall, Fragments is definitely an album worth getting. I don't think you'd be disappointed, unless of course you were expecting a band to recycle their own material. If you like the fact that a band has moved on and is brave enough to move on and support bands who challenge themselves as well as their listeners, then you'll love Fragments.

2-0 out of 5 stars What the . . . . ?!?!?
Ok, the first two albums were great. Infact, they were better than great, they were greater-er (uh, yeah). Then came this album. Since then, I am afraid to waste my hard earned money on following releases. This album basically sucks (minus the short track featuring good ol' biz). It's like going to a disco on prozac and speed. They were doing great, and then the artistic momentum that they had created all of a sudden stopped. Don't take my word for it, look at the average # of stars it got compaired to previous albums. Simply put, this album bombed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not as bad as some people might think
I was perusing my enormous cd collection over the holiday weekend and came across Morcheeba's "Fragments of Freedom" cd. I haven't listened to it in a couple of years. "Fragments of Freedom" is the only Morcheeba cd that I own so I can't compare it to the group's other albums. I honestly didn't think that "Fragments of Freedom" is as bad as a lot of people say that it is. I'm not a big fan of funk music but surprisingly enough I found myself enjoying the group's more funk-laden tracks like "Love is Rare" and "Let It Go". "Fragments of Freedom" is by far not perfect because the way that the songs flow together which is a bit on the choppy side. I mean the first two tracks are gorgeous your traditional icy trip hop songs and then the next two are '70s funk-laden tracks. The fifth track is a dancehall/reggae-influenced track. I thought the various sounds made the album. Overall the sound on the album was uneven. Nevertheless I did like all of the songs despite the fact that they made the album sound very uneven.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the Morceeba I knew...
This should not be taken as an in-depth review of the album, and perhaps I am being unfairly biased. However, I purchased this album expecting the signature trip-hop down-tempo Morceeba sound that they have been crafting for the past few years, and this album deviates quite a bit from that. Just a warning to those wanting a first glimpse of Morceeba or an extension of what they used to sound like -- this album is not representative of their other work. And personally, I much prefer Morceeba's older offerings, such as Big Calm. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Better the 2nd time around
I'm a big Brazilian music fan but I generally prefer the classic brazilian sounds with a new twist of electronic or funk fusion. This CD does that for me. The first time I listened, I was disappointed but since then it has grown on me with the exception of the PM Dawn, Sting, Maxwell and the George Michael tracks, mainly because that's not my style. Brazilian music purists will probably not enjoy this CD but if you like the brazilain twist sprinkled on your other musical genres, you'll probably enjoy this. Just look at the list of contributing artists: Everything But The Girl, Cesaria Evora and Caetano Veloso with Ryuichi Sakamoto, David Byrne & Marisa Monte, Gilberto Gil, Money Mark, Crystal Waters, Mad Professor, Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi with DJ Soul Slinger, Stereolab and Herbie Mann, Milton Nascimento, Bebel Gilberto... This "Brazilian music" is different, but cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific CD
I loved this CD. The first song I heard from this CD was the Chrystal Waters version of "the Girl from Ipanema". From there, I looked all over for the song but could not find it. Finally I did on an English Dance compilation, which led me to this CD, Red Hot + Rio. From there, I fell in love with the first song, which is a little bossa nova, the last song, and everything inbetween.

This disc, made in 1996 I believe, in some ways I think can be credited for some of the new sounds coming from Brazil, like Brazil 2 Mil and BossaCucaNova and etc. Although the songs are revisited and remade classics, the popular musicians of that time internationally and in Brazil all contributed. Caetano Veloso, Marisa Monte, David Byrne along with Stereolab (they made a brilliant remake of 1 Note Samba with Herbie Mann), George Michael, Maxwell, Money Mark (beastie Boys) and Gilberto Gil - and what some people will love is that Bebel Gilberto is even on the final track titled Eu Preciso Dizer Que te Amor (I must say that I love you) that was recorded with Cazuza, who passed away due to AIDS, I believe. That is by far my favorite track on the CD.

A terrific disk. You will not be disappointed - and FYI - it has two companion pieces - Nova Bossa, which has the original versions of most of the songs as performed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz (Album cover and disc is almost identical to this one) Ondha Sonora - Red Hot and Lisbon - tributing to the Sound of the Portugal, Angola and Brazil - major Portuguese speaking nations and their music.

I enjoyed 1.Used Your Head by Money Mark, 2.Corcovado done by Everything but the Girl, the funkie beats were great, 3.Desafinado done by Astrud Gilberto & George Michael was soothing and relaxing, 4.Non-Fiction Burning was enjoyable 5.Crystal Waters' version of The Boy from Ipenema, LOVED IT!! the music makes your body want to move, it will be favorite, 7.Seguranca (Security) done by MAXWELL with that sultry soft voice of his & the music, this is a favorite, 8.E Preciso Perdoar done by Cesaria Evora & Caetano Veloso w/Ryuichi Sakamoto on the keyboard, Damn I love Cesaria's voice, she got off, this is definetly a favorite, 10.Water to Drink by Incognito w/Omar & Anna Caram was nice, 11.Dancing by Milton Nascimento was enjoyable, 12.How Insensitive done by Antonio Carlos Jobim & Sting, I didn't care for Sting singing this song, I do enjoy Sting's music but not this, he wasn't the man for it. 13.Water of March done by David Byrne & Marisa Monte was okay, but I enjoy Al Jarreau & Oleta Adams rendition on "A Twist of Jobim" better, 15.One Note Samba/Surfboard by Stereolab & Herbie Mann, I didn't care for that techno or computer sounding stuff, it sounded like the music on The Wiz when they were trying to get away from the trash cans, it will get a skip, 17.Black Orpheus Dub by Mad Professor, it had sort of a Rasta, funk, techno flair which was okay, 18.Chico Science & X DJ Soul Slinger, I couldn't get into that either, that will get a skip too, 19.Funk'N Lata's Sambadrome, was short & funky, 20.Giberto Gil's Refazenda, his voice went well with the song, 21.Preciso Dizer Que Te Amo done by Cazuza & Bebel Gilberto was nice, but the sound was off, it sounded like they were singing in a tube. I manly purchased this CD because it had my 2 favorite singers Maxwell and Cesaria Evora & I enjoyed both of their songs immensely. I am totally satisfied with this purchase and it will be one of my favorite CDs which I listen to often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Jobim Fans
If you like Bossa Nova, particularly Antonio Carlos Jobim, you will love this CD. It has covers by many current artists of his songs, as well as some other Brazilian music. I like how the liner has the lyrics in English, but almost all the songs are in Portuguese. The David Byrne Waters of March in an exception, where he sings in English, and a woman is singing in Portuguese, but it works out very well.

An excellent addition. I have most of the songs on the album on at least two other CDs, but the artists have played with the songs enough to complement the originals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brazilian Music Just Rules
I honestly bought this cd for one song, É Precisco Perdoar by Cesaria Evora, Caetano Veloso and Ryuichi Sakamoto. I became addicted to that song once I heard it and had to have it. I'm a huge Cesaria Evora fan anyway. (Try her too, anything she sings is god send.) Familiar with this series (Red, Hot and ...) I knew it would be a good cd, but all I cared about was the one song.

I got my song and oh I got more! Everything But the Girl singing Corcovado was a lovely tribute, plaintive and all. They did justice to Jobim and then some. PM Dawn's cover of Non Fiction Burning has rekindled my appreciation of PM Dawn as well as renewed my love of Brazilian pop.

The cd is great. Some are odes to Brazilian pop and others are renditions in the artists style. Familiarity with the songs definitely makes it a treat to hear them in new styles, but the few that I wasn't familiar with certainly opened my eyes to new sounds.

Now, I certainly recommend the cd for É Precisco Perdoar alone, but the rest of the cd is certainly worth it either way. Once you get a taste of this, you'll want more Brazilian Music. You almost can't go wrong with Brazilian jazz at all, you need only be slightly more judicious for Brazilian pop. It all has a laid back groove that will calm you as soon as exhilirate you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Downtempo cds of 2004
I've been listening to this cd over and over since I got it. I'm not a big Norah Jones fan, but her voice blends perfectly with this music. The music blends jazz, electronic, a tiny bit of hip-hop, and world beats. It's laid-back and perfect for summer. Most of the tracks have a female vocalist over the music.

Track 4, Angels, is definitely the highlight of this album. There really isn't a bad track on the album.

5-0 out of 5 stars POETRY IN MOTION!!!
Wax Poetic's "Nublu Sessions" is every bit hypnotic and sensual as it is danceable and profound. With guest appearances from the likes of N'Dea Davenport to former band member, Norah Jones, Wax Poetic has weaved an intricate web of neo-jazz, chill-out, microhouse, folk, reggae and soulful music sure to please. Every song is well-produced with layers of texture and delightful rhythms. A+

5-0 out of 5 stars Music to mentally dance to...
A few years ago, I happened upon wax poetics first cd in a used cd store. In fact I bought the disc without a jewel case, disc inserts or anything else, except the music and I must say I was simply blown away. That disc played so much until it was scratched so much that it couldn't be played any more!! Needless, to say, I bought a proper copy the second time around. Which brings us to the Nublu Sessions...I read a review in the paper that rated this disc an A-...Now, can I tell you that I REALLY do not listen to critics, nor buy what they recommend, but, let me just say that the critic who rated THIS disc an A- should be prosecuted for doing Wax Poetic a grave injustice!!! It should have been rated an A+++!!! The song selection and placement is virtually perfect, the instrumentation...WOW! It's an intoxicating cornicopea for listeners that uses sounds from unusual instruments to draws you into the vibe and maintains your interest. There are two songs from the previous album that are still oven warm and fresh. It's as if I'm hearing Norah Jones sing them for the first time. YOU MUST BUY THIS DISC PERIOD

4-0 out of 5 stars Warm and beautiful music
This is the perfect CD to turn down the lights, light up a candle or two, and just chill out! It has a wonderful mix of warm earthy vocals (Norah Jones's two tracks here are especially stand out, as well as excellent work by the resident vocalist, Maria Turner) with live jazz instruments and chilled laid back beats. The music envelopes you in a warm wash of sound and doesn't let go until the last track. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Weakest chilled CD
I am a chilled CD fan, but I found this to be the weakest CD in the series. Most of the tracks are slow and uninteresting. I had a hard time finding a single track that I liked. I am surprised that other reviewers rated it so highly; so I had to give my opinion, since I bought it on their recommendations. The only track I liked was the one with Nora Jones doing background, but it alone is not worth the price of the CD. For a much better compilation, check out Ultra Chilled 3, which has many great songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whoa!
This is a great compilation! Every Ultra Chilled has blown me away. These albums take a few listenings to really wrap your mind around, but when you do they will be the ultimate chill out. I don't really even listen to this music very much! This supports the theory that hard-core listeners and people coming from a more mainstream taste can both enjoy this C.D.
I have Each one and they are ALL incredible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ultra Chilled is back
After the debacle and compilation'o'crap that was Ultra Chilled 3, I was ready to swear off the series as a great thing that had been cloned two too many times. However, the fourth installment truly dives back into ambient waters and delivers some fab music. There are a few blips on the album, but the makers have redeemed themselves. It's worth the money. ... Read more

While Richard Dorfmeister will always be remembered along with Peter Kruder for the now-classic 1998 downtempo record The K&D Sessions, both Kruder and Dorfmeister have given over substantial time since then to Peace Orchestra and Tosca, their respective "side projects." Dehli9 isn't quite in the class of Tosca's best work (namely, 1999's Suzuki), but it's still hypnotically impressive, using cyclic beats, lazy electronics, and a few choice vocalists to induce an active dream state. "Rolf Royce," featuring Stephan Graf Hadik Wildner's druggy vocal swoops, pits long melodic phrases against a staccato bassline to create a nice flow, while Earl Zinger's laconic style matches up well with the jazzier textures of "Wonderful." Fans of minimalism will want to investigate a bonus CD included with the record from Tosca's other member, fellow Austrian and like-minded beathead Rupert Huper. Based on an earlier piece from Huper titled "12 Easy-to-Play Piano Pieces," it's a somber, icily beautiful song cycle. Like late afternoon sunshine on a hazy winter's day, Dehli9's elegant and haunting mixture lingers in the background, barely holding onto the day as whatever light seeps through slowly fades to shadow. --Matthew Cooke ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Tosca flinches and misses
Tosca doesn't explore horribly new territory here, but keeps some good beat ideas learned from his last albums. A few vocal tracks start off the album with good energy, but the downhill half of the album is just that: downhill. The last half feels like an afterthought of the duo... not to mention the second CD, which is an hour of "Pearl In"-like music.

Favorite track, out and away by a mile, is "Wonderful." While this song is very awesome and great, it is very unlike the work on the previous albums: Zinger performs full sentence stream of consciousness lyrics over Tosca grooves, a first for a Tosca track.

The packaging is exquisite, and makes you feel like you've made a great purchase... and it is, at the very least for the extremely nice feeling of the outer CD case. The music inside does not have a similarly impressive vibe.

4-0 out of 5 stars second best Tosca
I bought this cd yesterday and have listened to it about 6 times already. It was well worth the wait for another cd from them. I think Suzuki is there best offering to date. If your a fan of tosca, K & D, peace orchestra then you will really like this cd, if you are more inclined to be a fan of Tosca alone then you might go either way. The second cd is mostly piano. It flows like one long song of smoked out, chilled piano sessions. I think the second cd is cool on its own but would not recomend it if it was sold seperatly. The main cd has a good live vibe to it and sounds more like a band than previous cds. There is a good amount of vocal work by a variety of featured artists that really work well with the Tosca formula. There are a few songs that sound like they could have been written from the Suzuki sessions. I think anyone waiting this long for a Tosca cd will be pleased with the cd, despite the wait...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Music Fan from Bulgaria
I've always expected the best when I see Tosca on the cover but this exceeded my expectations. Great thick sound, great vocals, if any, perfect. I was utterly mesmerized. I thoroughly recommend it to all fans regardless of their style preferences.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bland and uninspired...Tosca's earlier works are far better.
I always judge music, not by the first few auditions, but whether or not I listen to it in the future. As in the case with Tosca's latest release, Dehli9, a year after I bought it, it is gathering dust. This does not detract from the quality production value and the sheer talents of D&H (Dorfmeister and Huber). However, I am still listening to Tosca's masterpiece, Suzuki, on a regular basis for the past 5 years. I expected Dehli9 to be another graceful yet complex work but after the first few listens, I was bored with the music. Most tracks are nothing more than lounged-out versions of deep house music. Me and Yoko Ono is particularly irritating (and don't get me started on the repetitive vocals). This piece would be better served as an instrumental. Wonderful, one of the strongest tracks, still has a jazzy, commercial feel to it, almost like it belongs in a shampoo commercial. This CD is not the blunted, abstract music we have come to love from Tosca. I thought the 2nd CD would be bonus, unreleased tracks or a "Dehli9 remixed" EP. Alas, I was again disappointed by discovering this was a collection of Rupert Huber's experiments on the piano. Honestly, the music was quasi-nighmarish...better suited on a Silent Hill or Resident Evil game soundtrack. I have only played CD2 once, never to grace my player again. In all fairness, this would be a good work to educate the uninitiated to the world of lounge, downtempo and trip-hop. However, you would be better served by skipping this uninspired work and head to the good stuff, like Suzuki and Opera. Hey, even the Honey EP gets better marks! Maybe there will be a "Dehli9 in Dub" in the future? It can't be any worse than the original...or can it??

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind-Numbingly Creamy
Hi. Anyways, reading some of the more negative reviews I feel a need to defend Rich and Rupert. I, personally found Suzuki to be more experimentally aweing than anything. Dehli9 is more rhythmatically sophisticated, blending the perfect amount of piano in a repetition that sparks beautiful transitional opennings for their many brilliant vocal and weeping electrical samples. I can bob my head to Dehli9 with a lot more freedom than I ever feel I can while listening to Suzuki. I enjoy this album in full, although I am not the biggest fan of Me & Yoko Ono. I gave Suzuki 5 stars also, but for a couple different reasons. Cheers. ... Read more
