I like this cd because the songs do not mix into each other. When one song ends it stop, then start at the next song without mixing into each other.

Amazon.com essential recording

On 1994's Dubnobasswithmyheadman, Underworld took the sexy vocal groove of the epic "Mmm Skyscraper I Love You" and expanded it to album length. It's derivative, but by no means is it forgettable. With "Skyscraper," Underworld created the perfect club track; it was dark and dubby, with a relentless groove chugging along below atmospheric noises and a sinister, suggestive vocal. Extended to over an hour, it's a long and seductive hypnosis session, a decadent film noir journey through dark impulses and impure thoughts. Vocalist Karl Hyde provides a monotonous, stream-of-consciousness narrative which, when chopped and rearranged, reveals a quintessentially British reserve that keeps the album mysterious. This is functional music, perfect for driving and, ahem, other repetitive activities. --Matthew Corwine ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars River of Bass
Dubnobasswithmyheadman is an all-time classic electronica cd that I still listen to after years of having it. It came out in '94, and it's amazing that ten years later it doesn't sound dated at all.

Karl Hyde's enigmatic lyrics and laid-back vocal delivery perfectly compliment the understated, ambient sounds, driven by a pulsating, mostly mid-tempo beat.

As with most electronica, these are not quickly digested three minute pop songs. Underworld takes their time adding new layers of sound, as in the track 'Surfboy'. It begins like good techno, but towards the end I'm so lost in all the sounds going on I don't realize when they were added.

One of my favorite parts of the entire cd, is the 3 minute ending of 'mmm skyscraper i love you'. It's a dreamy, hypnotic, incredibly original ambient heaven, that I would even describe as a work of art. They could have made an entire 10 minute song out of this group of sounds, because I'm disappointed when it ends.

More originality is found in the track 'tongue', a song with mostly guitar that gives the cd variation not found in other electronica.

Even the last song 'm.e.', which at first I found odd and that it didn't fit, ended up growing on me until it was a favorite.

I'm glad I found this gem of a cd years ago, which is not easy to do because American radio stations refuse to play electronica from England. Even the club-dance-techno stations here in New York, missed the boat entirely in the 90s when all the great electronica was coming out of Britian. I'm glad I didn't, thanks to the internet.

I usually don't gush over something, but Dubnobasswithmyheadman is a true electronica classic. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A flawless album
I was in Israel when I bought this album. I happened to be looking through the 'dance' section at a Tower Records in Haifa, where the CDs were basically mashed into the section, so tightly that in order to look at the front of one, I would have to take another out so I could lean the rest over. Anyway. As soon as I saw the front of this CD, I was amazed. The sheer amazingness of this album doesn't stop at the music, it continues straight into the cover and inset, which provide at least twenty minutes of reading. The music, however, is simply amazing. Though the Orb still takes the 'Best Electronic Group' for me, Underworld comes in at a close second with this CD alone. Granted, I know their later albums are 'not as good' (to some people), this single piece of sheer creativity makes up for all of that. My personal favorite track is definately Cowgirl, which fuses seamless melodic loops with the odd, stream-of-conciousness lyrics from Mr. Hyde, who, as far as I can tell, is complaining about the woman he loves not calling him ("I'm invisible" - "Why don't you call me; I feel like flying to"). The level of emotion conveyed is incredible - years ago I would never have thought that a piece of techno could do that. This review in a nushell: Buy this CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars The year is 1994...
I have had a nervous breakdown from the drone of being a corporate professional. I have roamed the country and ended up in Seattle. I'm seeking the soul of the 'grunge' movement. The angst and anger of this music has now become a tired commercialized cliche. It would soon die with Curt Kobain.

I'm altering my consciousness way too much and I encounter this sampler CD. I record it onto a cassette because I have to give it back. Remember the song 'Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe' by Whale? It's on there, as is Concrete Blonde's 'Everybody Knows' and Sinead O'Connor's 'Troy'. I remember these songs because they were more popular.

The grunge thing (and obligatory anger) fades as my consciousness is continually altered more and more. I catch the tail end of the Grateful Dead culture. I'm moving on toward something.

Soon I am led into the rave scene and the DJ culture now coming out of its infancy. Moby's 'Move'. The traveling DJs and the colorful rave postcards. Now THIS is a beautiful thing I think to myself. What is this? And where have I been? And how can I get there?

Anyhow, there's this bizarre song on this compilation that sounds like electronica run amuck. It's got a funky beat and stream of consciousness ramblings overtop layer upon layer of sound upon sound, all with an incredible beat. The song is hypnotic and hyper, captivating and mesmerizing. I've never heard anything like it. I don't know who it is. All I know is I can't stop playing it. Periodically, I play it when I find the tape. And I love it.

Years go by...

It's now 1998. I'm not quite sober yet. I watch Trainspotting, purchase the soundtrack and discover 'Born Slippy'. Next comes 'Second Toughest in the Infants'. Who are these guys? Then comes the Dubnobasswithmyheadman. And there it is! Cowgirl. THIS is the song that I've known for almost five years. I have come full circle. Something karmic about it.

To make a long story short, this is one of the albums that opened up new avenues of experimentation with music's boundaries. Electronica would never be the same. If, for five years, I could love something (and not know what it is), imagine had I actually discovered who they were then. Do yourself a favor, don't wait. Pop this one into your brain. There's a reason it's considered one of the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ooooh, this is good
If your my age, (we'll just say mid-20s) then you'll remember all the hype surrounding "Nine Inch Nails" back when this album came out. It was about 1994ish and everybody was listening to NIN (including me for a little while). The first time I listened to "dubnobasswith..." I found it a little bland, so I didn't listen to it again for a little while. I was always looking for harsher, heavier music. But as time went by I started playing it more and really 'listened' to it. Each time I found it to be more listenable and addictive. I find the album to be beautifully done. With each song flowing into one another perfectly in a smooth "groovy" kind of way. I only own one other cd from Underworld, but I find this one to be far superior. This music is all I need to just chill out and calm me down. If you want intense, heavy, insane electronic music listen to Cubanate's "Antimatter" or Aghast View's "Carcinopest".Great albums, but this album has just the opposite effect, a perfectly calming cd that has grown on me more than any other over the years. My copy even has a scratch on it that sort of messes up track six, but I still play it all the time. I guess that means this is a good album. The Nine Inch Nails, boy did they get old fast. The only reason those cds aren't collecting dust right now is because they're at the bottom of a pile right now. I get my kicks on channel six, what does that mean anyway? It doesn't matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars soothing and mesmerizing
Dubnobasswithmyheadman was the album I got after purchasing "Everything, Everything; LIVE" (I was a newbie to Underworld but now I get them). My first impression of it was kind of perplexed. I really couldn't get into the 'style' of it except for "Cowgirl" and "River Of Bass" and therefore I just kind of disliked it. After reading other reviews on it (including Editorial reviews), I interpreted those in the album when I gave it another listen and it grew on me gradually everyday. I think of Dubnobasswithmyheadman as a very soothing and mesmerizing album with their style of their OLD albums (mesmerizing as in relaxing and a nice 'break' from Underworld's more upbeat and fast-moving beats in their other albums). "Dark & Long" has to be the perfect song to INTRODUCE the whole CD and the rest of the tracks. It starts off with a simple beat to begin, and then it gradually adds in with other wonderful sounds (I'm still a newb to 'techno' music in general so I can't describe 'things' very good yet). "Mmm Skyscraper I Love You" took me a bit to get use to, hence the title, but after chuckling through it and all, it grew on me as well. I thought they could've done a lot better on "Spoonman" and "M.E."...they were just a tad strange to me when I listented to them (actually I still haven't even listened to them FULLY yet to really give a real opinion on them). To finish it off, I would rate Dubnobasswithmyheadman as one of their 'star' albums with Emerson and Hyde putting together Mmm Skyscraper I Love You and the 'classic' "Cowgirl". If you are a newbie to Underworld I wouldn't suggest you start with this album though...start off with "1992-2002" or "Everything, Everything; LIVE". I hope my review has helped. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a band moving dance music forward
This album from acclaimed cinema-breaksters Hybrid almost arrived too late, with singles hitting our shores and landing on compilations as far back as 1997. Well finally it gets the American release it deserves, albeit not as future-progressive as it once seemed. Despite their adoration from top-flight trance DJs and artists like BT, their sound (and blistering remixes) proudly defy pigeonholes- but since I'm in a labeling mood, lets go ahead and call it orchestral nu-school breakbeat.

Firing out the gate with the soaring "If I Survive," Mike Truman, Lee Mullins, and Chris Healings reveal the blueprint for what is, essentially, a dance soundtrack by showcasing the Russian Federal Orchestra and the pipes of Julee Cruise. The few remaining vocal tunes are actually the disappointment of the album, partly because their hard-edged music calls for a tougher singer, mostly because the stellar backing tracks just don't need accompaniment. Hybrid achieve greatest success by mixing deep-bass breaks with contrasting strings and crisp production, as in the lurking growler "Kill City," or epic (overrated) "Finished Symphony." Other hits may sneak in some scratching ("Snyper") or what sounds suspiciously like guitar ("Theme From Wide Angle,") regardless, the focus is on making you move not wondering what movie that came from.

Asan added bonus, The Pretenders tune "Kid" - remixed and released this year by the band as "Kid 2000"- has been added. They have the tunes and the DJ cred, now it's your turn to plug into a band moving dance music forward. B+

5-0 out of 5 stars some of the best electronic music I`ve ever heard
Out of my entire CD collection, this is one that I listen to the most, and the one that I would recommend the most to someone who is not familiar with it. I cannot stop trying to get people into Hybrid. Everybody who thinks techno is nothing but repetitive obnoxious sounds needs to hear this music.
Why? Because it`s beautiful, like good music is supposed to be. A word not many people would think of as being applied to electronic music. Yes, it makes you want to get up and dance. But it also can be very pretty and hypnotizing at many points, especially in the beautiful and simple love song "Dreaming Your Dreams". Unlike artists like Fatboy Slim who is obsessive about using vocals in very song, Hybrid is not afraid to have plenty of variety in their CD by using very different-sounding vocalists and even adding gorgeous violin sounds to many tracks. There are songs like "If I Survive" in which the vocals have a big part of the song and you are tuning in to every lyric, and then there are ones like "Beachcoma" in which you are only completely absorbed in the music.
Once you listen to the CD a lot it becomes kind of like its own universe. I really don`t know how this group does it. The CD is titled like the soundtrack to a movie, with "Opening Credits" and "Theme from Wide Angle". I can definitely picture this music being used in a really cool movie. I want to see this movie really bad. It`s a shame it doesn`t exist. That`s how much the music really paints pictures.
If you never imagined techno music could do that, you have to check out this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evolution
This album does seem to mark the next step in electronic music, like many of the other reviewers have pointed out. It would definitely have a great appeal to fans of already famous DJ's and projects such as BT, Way Out West, Oakenfold and Orbital, but there's also an interesting gimmick that works it's way into the album: the orchestral sound. Ok actually it's not much of a gimmick, because it fits in amazingly. Any DJ/artist who is confident enough in their music to fly over to Russia and hire a 90 piece symphonic orchestra to accompany their break-beats should deserve a listen from anyone, and trust me, that's all it's going to take. Fast tracks: "Beachcoma", "Theme from Wide Angle", "Snyper". "Sinequanon", the French rapping track did rub me the wrong way for about a year, but now I've learned to live with it. Pick up this album or even better, "Wider Angle", the extended US version, and you'll love this band. Also, get a hold of their remixes, especially FSOL's classic "Papua New Guinea" and Sasha's "Xpander". This is what the new electronic music should sound like... go out and get this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't recommend this highly enough!
I'm afraid I can't speak with any expertise on how this CD fits in the body of techno music as other commentators have. That said, however, I hope that my review here will be helpful to other Amazon customers who kind of have an interest in techno music, but don't know what to try.

It's simple: try this CD. I find it intelligent, passionate, energetic without being frantic, diverse, and a little more substantive than a lot of the pure synth dance/techno music I've heard bits of. I've previously enjoyed, and still do, the music of Delerium, in both its more pure synth and techno-tribal incarnations. This is more of the same, with a little more edge. There are wonderfully diverse bits in this music, you'll find yourself picking up on something and yet also feeling that it fits so naturally into what they're doing. There's a mood of artistic surprise and yet also a sort of rightness to this music. The emphasis is on music more than vocals, but both are melded wonderfully. The French "Sine Qua Non" serves up both, with a bit of a hiphop edge.

Whatever it is that works, at least for me, in this genre of music is here in abundance on this CD. I'd sincerely recommend giving it a try. I hope you'll enjoy it as I have. ... Read more

This is Adult.'s Thrill Jockey debut, though it does not signal an end to their own Ersatz Audio label. Adult. decided to devote all their time to the band as opposed to the label, which they have run for over seven years. "D.U.M.E." contains six songs, all exclusive to this EP. While the band have been unfairly championed as part of the electro-clash movement, their music knows no class distinction. 5-0 out of 5 stars This is the future
Adult. is one of my favorite bands. It's been two years since their last release. Their last tour was a big success and the gained many fans by their enthusiastic performances. Many collaborations have taken place in the meantime. Ones with The Dirtbombs and Death In Vegas stand out. Adult. never seem to stay doing one thing for very long. This record is starker and more aggressive than anything they have done. Some of the song titles "Hold Your Breathe" and "Get Me Out" reveal familiar themes. But the sounds are a shock. "Get Me Out" reminds me of the first Siouxsie and The Banshees record. "The End" has some guitar on it, and sounds like post-punk bands of 1979-82. The music is very violent and anti-social. Only the song "Don't Talk" sounds like their previous work. Adult. Has moved on. This band has become unique, iconic, and capable of doing no wrong. Definitely an interesting record. They have created their own studio and their own label. They have created the environment for their music to exist in. Most of these songs were played live first. Adult. has been around for seven years and are better than all these fashionable movements that many associate them with.

In listening to Moby's collection of early work and rare remixes, it's clear the diversity of this man's wax was in full effect long before the gospel field recordings of last year's wonderful Play came to the fore. Little pieces of dialogue mingle with gigantic house beats and snippets from sources forever unknown, twisting through songs like the downbeat "UHF" with serpentine ease. His grasp of structure was much different then, however, as these mixes can wander a bit--especially in the hour-plus worth of "Go" remixes he offers up on the second disc. Still, this is a worthy excursion for Moby fans and those who appreciate techno with a little range. --Matthew Cooke ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly What You Would Expect With B-Sides But...
This album has some killer re-mixes and that in some cases are better than the original version. Specifically, songs like Next Is the E, Have You Seen my Baby, and Drop a Beat. It also contains one of the most jarring tracks ever in Thousand, which according to the Guiness Book of World Records, is the fastest song ever recorded. Needless to say, it probably won't be one that you would want to listen over and over to. The remixes of Go are good at first, but then they sorta become bland, but then again there are 14 different versions here. The Rainforest mix is my favorite version of Go, and the In Dub mix was my least favorite.

Should you pick this album up? Most definitely if you're a fan of Moby or of techno. Yes, there's some weak stuff here, so it's not going be another Play, Everything Is Wrong, or I Like to Score. It's more like Moby but with more filler, and it's probably a better album than about 85% of the stuff that's out there now.

5-0 out of 5 stars I got yer Moby right here!
If you had never heard of Moby before his songs started "Play"ing in the background of tv commercials, then, you may not enjoy this album. This is older, experimental techno - an etheral mix of house, early jungle and even a bit of industrial. It is almost *nothing* like his amazingly popular "Play", which makes it thoroughly enchanting. Here we are given a rare glimpse into the life and compilation style of Moby from 1989-1993 - an interesting slice of his music, with mixes so hearty that I actually enjoy the ones covered on this album more than I did the originals.

"Have You Seen My Baby" is my personal favorite, which must be turned up to full volume and bass to fully appreciate. "Drop a Beat" also puts out some really good rythms, as Moby skillfully interweaves melody, beat and somewhat disjointed vocals, the meaning of which cannot be determined. Sit in a chair while you are listening and you will feel your body pulsing in time with the music. "I Feel It" comes full circle, using the vocals sampled in the much-loved "Next is the E" (What is the 'e', anyway?) The disc ends with Thousand, which, if I remember my facts (and the liner notes), was marked in the World Records Book as being the fastest song ever recorded. I don't personally care for it - it disturbs me. But there it is.

Disc two is a bonus, hooray! Get ready for a cool CD just of remixes of "Go!" Most of the remixes are very worthwile and are great for chilling out, providing background music mostly. A couple I skip through, but we won't tell Mister Moby that. : ) All in all, certainly a great value - two discs for the price of one.

The "Rare" album itself is not so much of a concept album like just about everything from "Everything is Wrong" on to the infamous "Play" - however, it contains some very nice techno from one of its early innovators. Moby has always stood by his convictions and made amazing music while spreading his worthwhile and unobtrusive message. You can't really help but be inspired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Early Moby, how I love thee.
A great mix of electronic genius Moby's early remixes and b-sides. Virtually every genre of dance is collected here, from the classic rave track "GO! (rainforest mix)", the odd electronica "UHF 2", to acid-club fan favourite "Have you seen my baby (baby mix)". Also contains the fastest song ever recorded, "Thousand", topping in at an insane 1034 bpm. (I've tried to make super fast songs, but nowhere need that speed! All my programs stop at 999 bpm!). Hard, odd, but loveable, "Thousand" is one of my fave Moby tracks. Sure, some of the beats sound a bit dated, but what can you expect from dance songs made from 1989-1993? The bonus disc, I feel, is better than "Rare". I just love to play this album from start to finish, and listen to it again, and again!

BEST TRACKS: UHF 2, Thousand, Go (Rainforest, Arpathoski and Amphetamix Mixes)
WORST TRACKS: Hard to choose... none are really bad, but some do sound a bit dated, and some of the voice samples do REALLY annoy me, but nothing stands out as bad!

4-0 out of 5 stars A near flawless collection
This is one very good collection for big Moby fans and completists.Disc 1 collects all the essential mixes of the mega-hit Go.The mix is continuous and adventurous. You can literally hear all the dance genres mixed in the tracks,Ambient,Tro-hop,Acid,House,etc.The best one I think is the Woodtick mix.Very fast and hard! Disc 2 collects some of his very hard to find or otherwise deleted tracks. Some of the tracks are better sounding here than on his Early Underground cd.Especially I feel it,Have you seen my baby?,and Next to the e.Best tracks on here I think.Overall it is a good set to have if you don't want to hunt down the singles separately and spend lots of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A marvelous collection well-worth buying
What a fantastic mix of spirtiual, hard-core, dance, and other types of Moby's vast array of fantastic music. The Rare disc is simply fantastic, a great disc to put on and listen to all of the way through. Although not all of the songs shine, there are quite a few stellar examples of good techno. The first two songs, Voodoo Child and Next is the E are amazing (listening to the varying left-right play through headphones sounds awesome) and the track that was spawned from E, I feel it, is equally awesome. The last track, the fastest song ever recorded, seems to conjure up different images for every person that listens to it, and is a perfect example of how a few simple beats can make a fantastic song. In between there are a few other good songs (although I am not as big a fan of Moby's more hard-core songs), specifically the songs where he uses simpler beats and notes in a very moving way. The Go disc is a great addition to the already great Rare disc and i love to just put it on and let it play and play. If you are a big fan of Moby you have to get this disc, if you want this as a follow up to Play you may want to try another disc first. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scorcher
Cinematic Orchestra's album 'Motion' probably came out too late to feature in many people's list of the best CDs of 1999, which is a shame because it's a scorcher. Jazz fans, trip-hop-ites, music lovers go get it now. Five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another CD worth buying of Ninjatune....
This is a good Cd that bodes well for the future of music. On this album, producer J Swincoe took loops off of old jazz records-- his favorites-- got musicians to learn how to play them-- then sampled THEM and put them back together. The resulting is a slower, more user-friendly Amon Tobin (without the thundering machine gun drum and bass.... that makes his stuff extra special....) It's Portishead without the female vocal perhaps (which hurts my ears....). Maybe the best way to describe this CD is like smoother DJ Shadow who is more reliant on jazz (and less on hip-hop) as his source material. Or like DJ Cam on "Mad Blunted Jazz" perhaps.... toned down a little....

If you've not ever bought this or other ones of the Ninja Tune records.... start with this one.... then get Amon Tobin and Kid Koala and the rest....

This is a tight record... though it's intended more for jazz fans than for electronic fiends or hiphop heads...

5-0 out of 5 stars Eclectic Jazzy Mambo !!
I was excited to learn that The Cinematic Orchestra had more albums other than "Motion". After reading the reviews, it seems this album was the lower on the totem pole, however, this album is excellent. It's jazzy, the rhythm grabs you, and it ties together perfectly with a electronic feel. This is an album for anyone who appriciates contemporary jazz. Every track is worth listening to, and it doesn't get old. I am very ambitious about purchasing thier other albums after hearing this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Intense Moods
I bought this on a lark. I agree with one of the reviewers that described this as underground jazz in a smoky bar room. It fits! The vocalist really adds a mourning effect to the record. The ensemble plays are very good. If I were to voice any complaint, it would be that there is not enough solo-ing in it. It grows on you in a plesant way. I make a lot of tapes and these cuts are good mood transitioners. Dark, foreboarding and expressive. Great spin!

Throughout his ponderous career, Richard M. Hall (a.k.a. Moby) has mutated from skinny techno antistar to vegan Christian crusader to guitar-wielding punk and back again, picking up new fans (and new detractors) along the way. Although his brand of pop music has fallen out of favor with the techno cognoscenti, you can't ignore Moby's role in bringing the European variation on techno to American shores, transforming it from the mainstay of hip clubbers into the soundtrack of suburban teenagers. And for what it was, the music wasn't bad either. This eponymous album, released way back in 1992, collects the better musical moments from his early days on the Instinct label, including memorable tracks such as the frenetic "Drop a Beat" and the serene, Twin Peaks-sampling "Go." For neophyte techno listeners seeking some historical perspective or aging ravers looking to relive their salad days, this album is a must-have. --Matthew Corwine ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GO!
This was Moby's FIRST Cd and it's very diffrent from the radio friendly "play" and "18" but still very pleasant. This album is more of a rave/house album then the elecro-pop he later made. "Go" and "Drop a beat" became big Euro hits and Moby became a big name on the charts already in 91-92. It's a great album, most are obviosly instrumental with fast beats and catchy addictive melodies, Dancable like few other Moby albums. Songs like "Yeah" and "Next is the E" are also great, simular to the other two but so are the rest also, we can clearly see that this was a album from 1992 when the rave music was huge and Moby wanted to create his sound, later on he got a more solid and personal sound though. A CLASSIC album anyway. Worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Techno Album
Although he had been putting stuff out since 1989, this album can really be considered his first album. Unlike Play and even I Like to Score and Everything Is Wrong, this album is 100% pure techno. So, don't be expecting another Play with this one; however, this is IMHO, classic techno. It has great slammin' tracks like Drop a Beat, Electricity, Next Is the E, Have You Seen my Baby, Ah Ah, and of course, Go, which is easily Moby's most famous early song. The rest of tracks are good as well as Moby does a great job in making this album flow from one track to the next. If you love techno and/or Moby, then this album is a mandatory selection for your collection.

1-0 out of 5 stars Moby's Debut CD: The Anti-Aspirin
The first Moby album I ever purchased was Play, and I found it incredible. I then bought 18, Animal Rights, and Everything Is Wrong, and liked them all. So when I popped Moby's debut album into my CD player, I was shocked.

Moby's later work defies and rises above traditional techno, to create beautiful, sometimes soothing, sometimes energizing music. This CD, on the other hand, sounds like your worst nightmare out of the 80's. It's nothing but endless repetitive electronic beats paired with annoying sound effects. Only the last song on the album, "Stream", shows any promise at all.

So obviously, my recommendation would be to steer clear of this album. Unless, for some reason, you think it's been too long since your last headache.

3-0 out of 5 stars Drop a beat
I didn't get into Moby's music until his 1999 breakthrough smash "Play". That was a pop cultural phenomenon for techno music to make the crossover into pop music back then. Since "Play", I had been a fan of Moby's. Since then I have bought his last album "18" as well as his earlier albums like "Everything is Wrong", "I Like to Score" and his self-titled album. Unlike "Play" and "18", "Moby" is pure techno music. There isn't any gospel samples used on the cd like on "Play" and "18". "Moby" reminds me more of Future Sound of London (early FSOL), The Prodigy, and Leftfield. I like the cd. It is different however I find myself enjoying Moby's more recent albums beginning with "Everything is Wrong". Still "Moby" is an interesting album to listen to because it is a contrast from "Play" and "18". I guess if there was a track that remotely sounds anything like what the public heard on Moby's last two records, I would have to say that "Everything" is that track. It does give the listener a glimmer of what to expect from Moby in the years to come. "Drop a Beat" is an okay track but I certainly can groove more to the sounds of "Yeah" and "Electricity". The music on this cd may be a lot less radio friendly but it still has a good beat to dance too. Perfect rave music if you ask me. If people are looking for something that sounds more like "Play", "Moby" isn't the album to buy. If you want to hear Moby's earlier album and to hear his techno roots, "Moby" is a good cd to look into.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Moby
From the first notes in "Drop A Beat", you know that Moby's debut will be a ravin' ride from beginning to end. When I think 'techno', this album is what I think of. Hard driving beats, snarling synths and obscure samples create a perfectly crafted piece of elecronic mayhem. Moby has an excellent sense of layering and timing, and he knows exactly when to 'drop the beat' (get it?) to get an audience raving.
Highlights include the classic Twin-Peaks sampling club hit "Go" and the dark acid-rave "Have you seen my baby?", easily one of my fave Moby tracks, along with "Machete" off of Play and "Feeling So Real" from Everything is Wrong. Things slow down a bit at the end with the tranquil "Slight Return" and the organic sounds of "Stream", but all in all, Moby's self-titled debut is one powerful piece of work. While his later albums, especially Everything is Wrong, still had the techno spirit, this is techno in it's purest form. Highly recomended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Go and buy this album now
i don't understand how anyone can snidely dismiss this album and call it "a bunch of beats." are you angry that this isn't your standard limp bizkit top selling piece of crap that's basically screwed up american music as we know it? unlike the self-centered, phony musicians of today, all whom are idolized and praised, moby plays practically every instrument known to man, and he does his own thing. i'd go through any length to see him and beck play together. but anyway, this album is gorgeous. it will make you want to dance, make love, close your eyes, and feel everything moby put into this album. before you know it, you will feel all this trance-like beauty being put in yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Early Underground is everything Moby, and techno, is about.
This album rises to the top as a defining techno compilation. For those of us around the techno, rave, dance, or club scene several years ago (the turn of the 90s), Moby's music is the embodiment of that atmosphere. This album is essential for anyone interested in what "early underground" and the early rave scene are all about. This album is fantastic, I would recommend it to anyone and everyone who holds any interest in the evolution of techo, disc jockeys, the dance music culture and/or the underground rave scene.

4-0 out of 5 stars Apprentice Moby
The music on this album may not be as complex or as polished as that on 'Moby' but it's a rich seam of early techno-period Moby tracks that you probably haven't heard before. My favourite tracks are Besame and UHF 4 mainly because they have the piano riffs (or whetever they're called) in them. A lot of the tracks could be seen as prequels the tracks on 'Moby' (Go Original Mix is an interesting listen) and Moby's learning curve can be heard when comparing these tracks to the ones on 'Moby'. The bottom line is, if you liked 'Moby' you'll like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I don't see how people can not like this CD. I mean, obviously, you probably don't want to start with this if you've just bought Play or 18 and now you want to venture into Moby's past - if that's what you want, I reccomend you look at Everything Is Wrong. But a prequel to Play this ain't.

What it IS, however, is a bunch of GREAT songs, including the original Go (which everyone seems to hate except me), UHF3 (which features great early 90's piano); Voodoo Child, one of my favorite Moby songs of all time, as well as other quirks like Move the Colors and Permanent Green... even M-Four, the last track, is a great album ender. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not As Good As The Moby CD
I have listened to this album a couple of times and it just hasn't affected me like some of Moby's other stuff. I agree partially with reviewer Josh Taft (a pretty good reviewer, especially on Techno) that Moby's 2 best CDs may have been his first, Moby, and his last in Play. Where I disagree with him is that I think Everything Is Wrong and I Like to Score are just as good or better than Moby with Play being the unquestioned masterpiece. However, Early Underground is not better than Moby and the tracks on this album are not as memorable to me as the ones on Moby or Everything Is Wrong or I Like to Score or Play. I guess I have gotten spoiled by Play and since I feel that EIW, ILTS, and Moby are also solid albums this one is sorta of a letdown. Tracks like UHF3, Voodoo Child, Barracuda, and Mobility are the ones that I like the best. The version of Go here does not include the Twin Peaks "elements" that would make this song his most well-known. This version is still good, but you've been warned that when you listen to this song that it won't be the version you've been expecting or the best version of this song.

Maybe in time, my opinion of this album will change, but for now although it's a solid techno album, it simply is not as good as some of the other stuff he has done. This album is still a must-own for any Moby fan and for die-hard techno fans, but for those who are just getting into Moby's stuff you might want to borrow someone's CD and listen to a couple of tracks before deciding to buy. I don't regret buying it--it's just one of those CDs I have that I don't listen to alot. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's OK.
All the songs are good, but I especially like "It Is A Fine Day" by Miss Jane. I am also a fan of DJ Encore and Engelina, Ian Van Dahl, Darude, Amber, Madonna, Iio, and Linkin Park. I strongly recomend the album "Intuition" by DJ Encore and Engelina. That is my favorite CD of all time. My favorite song of all time is "Castles In The Sky" by Ian Van Dahl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid
This is a very solid trance album for people used to European Club music. I myself fell in love with Trance when I lived in Madrid and this is the first US album that I picked up that can match with the imported Ministry of Sound CDs that I have. If you are a fan of Clubbers Guide to 2002 or Ibiza National, this is a good CD that will not break the bank.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I like most trance, but this CD was full of uninteresting and banal songs. I couldn't pick one out from the other as sticking out in my mind except for "Children" and "Insomnia", which I had heard before on other CDs. Save your money.

Last Century Modern by DJ-programmer Towa Tei(formerly of Deee-Lite) is a truly cosmopolitan extravaganza, featuring influences, guest artists, and languages from all over the world. Hard-driving programmed beats and bass lines are in full force, but many songs, such as "Let Me Know" and the title track, make extensive use of live musicians and singers. Tei propels "Angel" and "Butterfly" with mercilessly fast rhythms while angelic female vocals provide a joyful contrast. Trumpeter Tom Browne plays on his own "Funkin' for Jamaica," a stylish remake featuring rapper and Beastie Boys collaborator Wizdom Life as well as the French vocal group Les Nubians. Other tracks, such as "Stretch Building Bamboo" and "CHATR," are inventive sound expressions, the latter employing the cutting-edge speech synthesizer of the same name. "A Ring" and "Congratulations!" join exotic jazzy riffs with obscure spoken-word fragments, complementing Tei's trademark quirky sense of humor. --Mark McCleerey ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Last century's modern still rocks in the new one
Towa Tei is one of the best modern Japanese djs/musicians and this album is not an exception. Towa, or Doug Wa-Chung, became first known when was one of the members of New York based Deee-Lite that many may remember due to their hit 'Groove is in the Heart'. But after that he started his own career and got even better. All of his albums feature a belnd of differentstyles: bossa nova, jazz, dnb/jungle and all the rest from 90-ies club-landscape.

'Last Century Modern' contains all the styles mentioned above and it works very well. The first track, 'LCM', reminds me of the pre-WWII 'modern' music and especially Marlene Dietrich due to the songstress' voice. After that comes 'A Ring' with cuty French and ringing vocals. Then speeding 'Angel' with it's shaking beats, and 'Butterflye' which is as fast (though beats are somewhat 'darker, but at the same time the jazzy background makes the sun shine) and features women straight from heaven. Worth mentioning are also collaborations from trumpeter Tom Browne, rapper Wizdom Life and French vocal group 'Les Nubians'. This album is certainly part of the modern future... for a century at least.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lounge meets Dance meets Funk meets You get the idea
This is my first exposure to Towa Tei, purchased on a whim. At first I was a little surprised, I was expecting a bit more of a homogenous and fluid disc. Fortunately I was able to enjoy the variety that Towa explodes with after the first two or three tracks. Setting up with a little lounge music and bassanova, he goes all over the boards, brilliantly incorporating a diversity of musical genres without making the listener feel too transplanted. The only time I felt something out of place was one of the most enjoyable tracks on the album, Funkin' for Jamaica. The previous track, Congratulations!, was touted as the signature track on the album, but I did not find it to have superiority to the other cuts. In fact, it seems a little monotonous with too little change over the stretch of the track, although its quick climax at the end leaves one wanting more.

Overall, I'm happy with it, and I'm interested in looking into more from Towa Tei.

4-0 out of 5 stars what Sound Museum couldn't be
With everyone one of his album, it looks like Towa Tei is trying to put you in a certain frame of mind as far as time periods go. His first solo record was named Future Listening, and the idea was apparent he was trying to make music for the future throughout the record. And it worked. His next record was Sound Museum which I imagine was supposed to conjure up sounds of ancient musicians, althrough the actual recording didn't serve the title at all. This time he's named his record Last Century Modern, music for the final years of the 20th century. It's more forward-looking than the look-how-far-we've-come idea that the name conjures though.

"Last Century Modern" is a song of accordions and Balanscu Quartet sounds whirring around your head in space. A Brazilian voiced singer only listed as "UA" sings the title over and over with the emphasis on "mo-darn." I must note however that it seems like UA is only a replacement for my beloved Bebel Gilberto, who does not make an appearance on this album. I guess now that she's making her own records, she doesn't have time for Towa. This is quite unfortunate as she can breathe life into even the deadest Towa Tei song.

A breathy French singer is in the spotlight of the glitch/lounge song "A Ring," something that warrants numerous listenings if only for the strangeness and sound effects that you don't expect. Al throughout the record however you can expect Towa's signature filler lyrics. About half the songs feature computer voices, "Last Century Modern" lists various media formats in its lyrics and "Angel's" lyrics are little more than "S-P-E-L-L A-N-G-E-L." He's quite the producer, but hardly ever a great wordsmith, that Towa.

There's also as usual the fair share of female-voiced American pop imitations, though they're more fleshed out and more successful than the posh on Sound Museum. "CHATR" is named after and was made with a new text-to-voice program that's been developed as the most realistic computer voice ever made. They gave Towa exclusive permission to use it for this song before the program was ever released, but that doesn't make it a great song. It's listenable fun though. The finest song may be "Stretch Building Bamboo," something created by Towa completely on his computer. It's pretty much all sound effects flying all around your head that all build into a totally funky psychedelic collage.

"LCM" brings back the sweet melody from "Last Century Modern" and leaves it up to the Balanscu Quartet and a children's chorus. It would make a sweet final track, but then we get two remixes. One is by Towa's rock-n-roll counterpart wizard, Cornelius. He doesn't do anything too magical to "Butterfly." I would think he'd be more cut-out to re-do "Stretch Building Bamboo" maybe. In the end, Last Century Modern hits all the points that Sound Museum tried to hit but couldn't. Even the rap works. It's funny when wants to be, poppy when it wants to be, and always smart.

5-0 out of 5 stars I feel so fine!
This disc is your friend. Buy it, buy it, buy it, buy it, buy it. Okay, you get the idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Congratulations on the Finest Turntable in the World!
I picked up this CD after thinking, "let's pick up something interesting and different." Let's just say I was FAR from being dissapointed. This Towa Tei CD (the reason I was previously familiar with him was because of his affiliation with Dee-Lite and a short interview he did on MTV Asia) has certainly spread its ears out on the rainbow spectrum. It contains music anywhere from hip hop to jazz to electronica, with French and Funk and everything else to boot. Listening to it is highly enjoyable if you're in the mood for something different once and again, but let me warn you, if you're in the mood for consistency, this is NOT your cup of tea. I wanted something different, I got it. Every now and then when I'm bored of the same old routines, I pop this CD in-- and it never fails to bring a smile to my face. ... Read more

What do you do if you're musically inclined in the strip-malled hell of Orlando, Florida? Since you're not exactly in a hotbed for good music, you've really no other choice than to spin your own. So goes the story of DJ Icey, one of the rave generation's most revered spin doctors. He sprang up in the early '90s, when every club kid wanted to hear, make, and buy old-school breaks. Icey was one of the few who actually followed through on this desire, which led to Mixmag's crowning him the King of Funky Breaks in 1998. Now that he's started his own record label (Zone Records), played at countless warehouse parties, and produced many of his own tracks and remixes, Icey proudly releases his Essential Mix disc. Following in the footsteps Fatboy Slim, Pete Tong, and Paul Oakenfold, Icey's contribution to the Essential Series is a cost-efficient and hassle-free way to bring a world-renowned DJ-producer into your own living room. Icey assembled an A-list cast of contributors for this mix: Orbital, Tsunami One, Sabres of Paradise, David Holmes, and Timo Maas all make appearances, as does Icey himself. 5-0 out of 5 stars Another hit from the god of electro breaks.
Every album that DJ Icey releases always takes me by suprise - he keeps improving his skills while staying true to the funky breaks and electro beats that have made him so well known. In this appropriately named Essential Mix he throws in his own music along with other electro beat DJs and even threw in some progressive house to sweeten the mix. Overall this is a fast-paced funky mix that is essential to your DJ Icey/electro break collection. I would recommend this album to anyone new to this style of techno or hardcore fans - it deserves more than five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars He did it again !!!!!
This mix is probably one of the best breaks cd's i have heard this year. Icey has plenty of Cd's out there but only 3 are available at common stores. Funky breaks,Generate and essential mix are available everywhere and Break to the Beat 1+2,Continouus play, Mixed and Selection you get at DJ stores. This Cd is probably leading the top with Selection and Funky Breaks. If you are an Icey fan this record is a must: It leads you from smooth icey breaks to fat banging beats you only heard him spinning on south florida raves so far. I would even say this Cd is for everybody you likes electronic music just because for the awesome track selection and the variety. If you need help finding rare icey or breaks cd's let me know: mschaerf@hotmail.com.

Grrrreat techno ! This is by far the best Icey album out there, and gives "electro breaks"a new meaning by putting in some elements of house in the mix. This is one I highly recommend, and let the whole cd play you wont be dissapointed!

...I absolutely love it!! There is a good variety of sounds and styles all blended into one nice long flowing groove. It's techno. It's dance. It's rave. It's house. It's funky. It's hard to stand still. (okay, so I'm not a professional music critic; but I am a music lover from WAY back!) The most notable tracks are "Purple" (infectious and upbeat), "Party Going On" (semi-euro housy Amsterdam meets Miami kind of thing), "Pumpin" (an interesting experience which eventually bursts into extreme dancefloor exhaultation at the 2 1/2 minute mark), and my favorite "Everyday" (excuse me, but is that a Diva in my living room? well then light the strobe and crank up the volume!!). Overall I would say it is an excellent CD and it satisfies the musical gypsy in me. I recommend it highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Fightin' Muzak
I bought this CD right before I saw "X-Men" in the movie theater. I had downloaded an MP3 of "Go Go Go (Sonya)" a while earlier, and I loved it, so I decided to buy the album and have all the songs. The 10 songs on this album range from okay to good to great. My favorite tracks are Sonya, Raiden, Kano, and Johnny Cage. The Mortal Kombat theme is great fighting / dancing music, and, despite not having much in the way of lyrics, is fun. Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Liu Kang, Goro, and the other mix of the MK theme (Track 10) are pretty blah. They could've recorded a song for Shang Tsung, but they didn't. Sonya's song will always be my favorite. In fact, I just created a remix of it last night, and it's available for download on WinMX and Morpheus. Overall, this is a good album - good for raves, good for exercises, good for a rush of adrenaline.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good techno-music, but the lyrics are a bit uninspired.
Yes, the music is good, very good. I would imagine this being performed live on stage at a Mortal Kombat Tour. The lyrics were kind of cheesy, but you'll grow to like it over time. The only con about this CD that is glaring is its length. Beware, you are paying thirteen bucks for only thirty-eight minutes of music. Don't fret, though-- the CD is still pretty darn good. Each track averages three-and-a-half minutes. Each song introduces you to each warrior's fighting style, background history, and their powers. The CD gets four stars and not five because of the length of the CD and not-the-best lyrics. They could have made a song about Shang Tsung and Shao Khan. That would have added seven minutes to the CD. But no... Buy it anyway. You'll grow to like it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good music. Cheesy singing.
This album has some cool jams on it, but the some of the singing is a bit cheesy though. The Immortals can make some very good techno music, but they definetly aren't the best singers around. I still like this album though. The main Mortal Kombat theme "Techno Syndrome" is cool and makes a good workout song. Johnny Cage's theme "Prepare Yourself" is also cool. It's the perfect movie star theme. Rayden's theme "Eternal Life" was very cool and 'electrifying'. Sub Zero's song "Chinese Ninja Warrior" is slightly moving and O.K. Not my favorite though. Goro's theme "The Outworld Prince" was kind of tight. Scorpion's theme "Lost Soul Bent On Revenge" was fair. Kano's song "Use Your Might" is O.K. Lui Kang's theme "Born In China" was cool but the sound fx of Lui Kang fighting in the background is silly. The last song on the album isn't that good. But this album is good. If you like techno then you might find yourself liking this. Mortal Kombat - The Movie Soundtrack - is ten times better than this though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Test your might, techno style
This is quite an intriguing CD. For one thing the songs are based off Mortal Kombat Characters, the first gaem mind you. Each has it's own unique style and overall it is an enjoyable CD. The tracks flow well, 4 characters than what would later be the movie theme Techno SYndrome. Than it's the last 4 (#8 being Goro) and than a techno syndrome remix.

Overall the top three tracks in my opinion are
1)Sub-Zero
2)Techno SYndrome (of Course)
3)Scorpion.

That doesn't mean the rest [aren't good], because quite frankly this is one of the few CD that you actually want to listen to all the tracks while most it's like 1 or 2 songs and thats it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but cheesy techno
First off, I'm not a gamer - maybe I'd like this album more if I'd spent more hours playing Mortal Kombat. Dunno. With that in mind...

I picked this up after I found out that all the music was composed and performed by Praga Khan, the man behind the Lords of Acid. While it's not exactly bad, it certainly doesn't live up to the strenght of most of his solo work or his LoA releases. Very standard early-ninties cheesy techno that's well produced, but ultimately uninspired. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars BEST MIX OF SMOOTH BREAKS THAT JUST FLOWS AND FLOWS, FLOWS..
Of course this one is a must for Icey and Baby Anne fans. Do not expect this one to be to similar to her 1st one . Her first Cd was more of a happier breaks and bass sound including the legendary Pepperspray by DJ 43. This one is smoother darker mix. The mix itself is so smooth and goes from one song to the other that you can hardly make out when the songs change. This is a perfect mix with no doubt. Even if I do prefer Icey's essential mix and Baby Annes 1'st LP just for the track selection this is an inceredible well mixed CD. 3.5 stars for the track selction but 5 stars for the technic. All the people out there that are reviewing this CD thinking it is Drum and Bass : Hello, Baby Anne, Florida Breaks, remember !!!! There is no D&B in any of her mixes or live sets. SHARPMAKS

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the bass queen's best stuff
Now thats what I call breaks! This album performs from start to finish and leaves nothing to be desired. It picks up where in the mix 1 left off.I highly recommend this cd

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Anne is the Queen of Bass.
This cd will capture you from the first song to the last, with brilliant bass rolls and perfectly placed breaks. Baby Anne cuts and scrateches like she was born to do it and if you don't listen to Baby Anne you are missing one of the best genres techno has to offer.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 star for sure
This is my favorite Baby Anne CD; that includes Dark Side of the Boom. This mix is a relentless bass and breaks mix album. I listen to dj mixes for the complete tone, overall meanings, emotionally moving continuity, mood, and total representation of the album. Of course I appreciate each individual track on an album, but if the mix lacks mood and meaning between the tracks, then I lose interest. (If I just wanted to hear some cools songs, I would by a compilation cd, or something.) Anyway, this album has all the neccessary ingredients to make it a classic and it is! It is fluid, the records all go well with each other, and play off each other in such a way that it highlights the best in each song; she takes you on a journey. This mix and the way it was mixed has style and skill, and more importantly the ability to listen to it over and over again.......it's so dope. 5 star for sure.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Fan of this CD by Baby Anne
After purchasing Baby Anne's first CD, I kept an eye out for the second one. Well, I bought it without checking it out figuring that it would blow the first one away... This was a mistake! Baby Anne's "v5.1" sounds terrible on here, lots of background static. "She Said" is extremely repetitive. Remixes that I have heard of it are cool, though. "Get Into it" by Montana Rangers is cool, but find it elsewhere. "Body Movin" by Baby Anne is o.k., but find this elsewhere also. Do not waste your money on this one! Baby Anne is coming out with a new disc "Dark Side of the Boom" soon, and hopefully the "third time will be a charm". If my review was helpful, then don't forget to vote. THANKS! ... Read more

Generally speaking, this compilation disc leans away from more abrasive club fare, instead featuring a more down-tempo-orientedselection of source material. From a reimagined version of Dido's "Thank You" courtesy of Deep Dish, totracks from Moby Delerium and Darude, the record has a mellower lean than others of its ilk. Still, there's also morepop-oriented material from Sarina Paris, Dream, and aseriously discofied version of "Get Over Yourself" from Eden's Crush toenliven things and make the record accessible for a wide range of dancefans. --Matthew Cooke ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not Totally Dance (almost though)
The following songs are not dance songs as follows...
1.Moby-South Side
2.Eddy Grant-Electric Avenue (ringbang mix by Peter Black)
3.Trick Daddy-Take It To Da House
4.Cleptomaniacs-All I Do (Is Think About You)
I HATE THOSE SONGS!!!!!
DIDO's Thankyou...they don't include her singing "I Just Wanna Thankyou"!!!!
SARINA PARIS's Look At Us...I love that song, my favorite, one of the best remixes on the CD.
DREAM's He Loves U Not...Another great song and remix.
Who Can't like GIGI D'AGOSTINO's I'll Fly With You(L'Amour Toujours)??? It's A grrrreat song...tipical beats though.
And last but not least TAMIA's Stranger In My House (HQ2 Mix). It's such a powerful song and she has a strong voice.
Most of the songs on the Cd are great, so I'll recomend this Cd to anyone. 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a mix CD - what more could you expect?
If you like dance music that they play in clubs, then you will definitely like TOTALLY DANCE! Most of the songs are remixes, so of course they'd sound different from the original versions. If you don't like remixes, then you probably don't like going to dance clubs. I personally LOVE remixes (and I can't wait 'til I'm 21 to go to clubs - I'm only 17!). My favorite tracks on this CD are: "Look At Us" [Beam & Yanou Mix] by Sarina Paris, "He Loves U Not" [HQ2 Mix] by Dream, "You Make Me Sick" [HQ2 Smooth Vibe Vocal Mix] by Pink, "Get Over Yourself" [Ak B. Rich X-Tended Mix] by Eden's Crush, "I'll Fly With You" [L'Amour Toujours] by Gigi D'Agostino, and my absolute favorite, "Stranger In My House" [HQ2 Mix] by Tamia. There is no pausing in the music on this CD between tracks...it just keeps playing from beginning to the end. If you love Pop music, Dance, and love attending late night dance clubs, then I strongly recommend TOTALLY DANCE! :-)

1-0 out of 5 stars ZERO Stars: Should be Negative (-2) Terrible Mixes and Songs
I'm always looking for good dance music that escapes my collection. I have to say this CD is absolutely terrible. There are only one or two good songs to begin with, and even those are horribly mixed. Unbelieveable waste of money. This CD deserves NEGATIVE TWO (-2) for ruining the only two good songs on this disc. Trust me and buy Louis DeVito Underground Party volumes 1-6, and perhaps Ultimate Dance Party, Ultradance, etc...

I have to cry that it is brand new and going right into the trash... ugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Club 2001
This CD has all the awesome remixes of summer 2001, with the hottest remixes by Hex Hector (Hq2), Al B Rich, and Deep Dish!

This CD is jam packed with awesome dance songs that are not only great for busting a groove, but great for listening to while exercising, or anytime you need a good energy boost.

This is the best collection of dance hits you will ever find, don't turn it down! (the only dissapointment is that they didn't have the radio remix of I'll Fly With You) I can only pray for a Totally Dance 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Can't Stop Listening
Basically, Totally Dance is a CD of pop and R&B hits in remixed form. A few of the songs are in their original form. With the exception of tracks 8, 13, and 14, I like the entire CD. My absolute favorite songs are:

1. Faithless - We Come 1
2. Pink - You Make Me Sick (HQ2 Smooth Vibe Mix)
3. Delerium f/Sarah McLachlan - Silence (Airscape Mix)
4. Darude - Sandstorm
5. Tamia - Stranger In My House (HQ2 Mix)
6. Toni Braxton - Maybe (Dynamix MYC Mix)

I hope Arista Records comes out with another dance compilation soon, but I don't know how they're gonna top this! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars DJ Mixing for Classic Dance Lovers 4 1/2 Stars
Featured artists are Alice Deejay, Fragma, ATB and Ian Van Dahl which are well known classics of the Club scene. There's plenty of vocals and variations. Depending on how you define Trance you may not find much here. Trance in my knowledge is electronically generated music with ecstasy beats that range from lower to higher or the other way around. I didn't find much Trance in this CD although some songs DID have it. I enjoyed the nice flow of songs that brought old memories of dancing in the club until the dawn of light. A great album to play for exercise or for just dancing until you drop dead. "Castles In The Sky" is one of my favorite songs in this album. It has the trance beats, drums n' bass and club sounds. "Better Off Alone" follows this song and can get you to feel so FREE! Its that club song and radio song you hear over and over and never get sick of. This song has the singer ask, "Do you think you are better off alone?" I felt tremendous positive girl power when I heard that song. The CD intensifies with "Someone" reflecting soft vocals. Song#9 is great, mentioning I need a miracle. I know I've felt I need to be rescued with some miracle from time to time. Every song is excellent. I can write an endless review. The songs reach about 4 1/2 stars or even 5 throughout. REMEMBER this is a Club CD with DJ mixes for dance lovers who like to reminisce that club feeling of going down the steps of the club while the people stare you up & down or for that moment when you come out of the restroom and glance to the person of your dreams! A true uplifting experience of music to feel and to fantasize!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad.
First I really didn't like this CD, but after listening to it twice, I changed my mind. It's good. Not super, not OK, just good. If you want to buy a trance CD, and you already own all the best ones, this is the one for you to buy, but otherwise there are better CDs out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars There's soo much better than this out there
I have to compare this one to others out there, and vol.2 is flat. It's not terrible, but a yawner.

I just bought vol. 4, it's it's head and shoulders better than this one. Skip this and buy that! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good Cd
Ok, this Cd had my favorite trance song in all of history, which is Kiss(when the sun don't shine) by the Venga boys. This song is Very unplifting and 9 minutes long too. There were also a lot of other good songs too, like Let u Go. I highly recommend this Cd if you like uplifting trance, with some hard trance too.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is an "OK" album
From other "TRANCE" cd's that I have listened to, I would say that this does not really constitute as being trance music. I would like to say that it is a good cd, just not what the title would cause most music listeners to believe the music actually is...or something like that...it's your choice... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I I I your FUNK & SOUL is delivered here!!!!
I'm a huge fan of D.J. Ease & his N.O.W. creation. The guy has mad skills. I cant say one bad thing about the music he produces yet I'm always skeptical when it comes time to a mix disk. Those that bought the European edition on the last N.O.W. release received the bonus mix disk which was just average until now. This "Late Night Tales" is nonstop funkiness ranging from jazz, lounge, dub, soul, to hip hop. These are my key favorites:

4. Show Me Some Love - The Rootsman (nice track also check out The Rootsman on the new BUG disk, amazing)

6. Listen - Quincy Jones (Quincy is the man, enough said)

8. Sneakin In The Back - Tom Scott (this track breathes JAZZ, its on my answering machine right now)

13. Spooky - Dusty Springfield(what a sweet classic to use, EASE must of been thinking about Viscous Pink on this one)

A must have for your collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!, that's all I have to say.
This CD is amazing! the mix between new tracks and old ones is unique and... just try it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Good
This is a really choice selection of tracks. It is blissfull as it seamlessly transitions from on great track to the next. All tastey flavors of music make the cut. It is really a journey through sonic masterpieces. I highly recommend it. I was a bit cautious about this after having enjoyed the earlier Nightmares On Wax releases but not really getting into the DJ Kicks release. This disc picks up and pushes the standards even higher. I only have this Another Late Night release as well as Fila Brazilia, which is a favorite of mine that i still enjoy listening to after having bought it when it was first released about three years ago, so if you dont have that one you might want to get it as well. Get this disc and get ready to enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethereal Old School Groove
Evelyn's latest release and contribution to the "...Late Night" compilation is quickly making it up to my 'Best of' list for this series.

My only question is why the dialogue at the end? I never have cared to listen to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Another Late Night. Time For A LateNightTale
Nightmares On Wax aka George Evelyn is an extremely talented individual. His personal productions Car Boot Soul and Smokers Delight are very essential downtempo but funky, laid-back albums. His DJ Kicks compilation, which blends hip-hop, jazz, breakbeat and chill-out grooves is the perfect companion for late night chilling. The latest instalment of the Late Night series provides an even better, more relaxing, subtle yet funkier alternative to DJ Kicks. It is truly impressive. How else can I describe the beautiful music contained in this collection? Filled with downtempo or mid-tempo Funk, Soul, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Dub, Reggae, Breaks, Electro elements throughout this mix, this is THE ultimate album to hit your stereo, while chilling with your friends.

From the chilled-out NOW remix of "Gravy Train" to the amazingly funky "Sneakin In The Back", from the dub-like "Show Me Some Love" to the spaced-out "California Suite", from the ideal-for-smoking "Action Tape 1" to the groovy "Spooky", from the full-on-beat "Bout That Time" to the sweet-vocal "Having Your Fun" you cannot miss for buying this album. And the cover version of Cymande's "Brothers On The Side Dub" is excellent.

The mixing is probably the best in the Late Night series with every tune effortlessly blended with each other, offering the smoothest transitions. And with a track selection almost impeccable this latest instalment is as good as (if not better) than Rae & Christian's Another Late Night (my personal favourite). I would strongly suggest that you start collecting the Late Night series if you are thinking about it, and if you have already then there is no doubt that you will buy this one. I already can't wait for dub-reggae masters Sly & Robbie's next Late Night release. ... Read more

"Let me kiss it and make it better," purrs the X-rated vixen turned mainstream actress as she attempts (on "Control," the first single) to get a rise out of the techno audience. With writing/production from Babble (ex-Thompson Twins), the KLF's Ben Watkins and Mike Edwards of Jesus Jones, the music is sleek, robotic, and primed for clubbers who'll view her as the camp descendant of disco queen Amanda Lear. "Outlaw Lover" is worthy of Mitsou and the serious tone of "Father's Field" tells us not to treat her too lightly.--Jeff Bateman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Traci Lords: The Newest Diva of Dance!
FANASTIC! Unlike most techno albums, Lords debut goes beyond simple rave standards and packs an album full of meaningful energy and alot of feeling. It starts off with the hit single 'Control' (from the film "Mortal Kombat") and takes you into a virtual dance wonderland. The songs inculde hardcore pieces ('Good n' Evil'), soft ballads ('Distant Land'), and even campy tunes ('Okey-Dokey'). Every track is a winner, not one fails to loose your intrest. A standout piece includes 'Father's Field', an emotional account of a painful (and true) experience that happened to Lords. Her openess in this song is amazing and reveals a vunerability that isn't very common in techno. Lords has established herself as a true artist, and proven that there's more to a "Melrose Place" star than good looks. She's a Madonna for the 21st century! END

5-0 out of 5 stars All Hail Goddess Traci
Very rarely does a CD come along I can listen to from beginning to end without even skipping one track. In fact, with the exception of this CD, there are none. "1,000 Fires" is the best CD I have ever heard and that is not just because I am a huge Traci Lords fan.

This album has something for everyone. If you are into the hard tempo dance gooves of raw techno, the sexy "Control" and "Outlaw Lover" are for you. If you're like me and prefer a trance inducing trip-hop sound, check out "Say Something", "I Want You", and "Distant Land", which is the song Traci sang in her movie "Underworld". My personal favorite is the flamenco-tinged sound of "Fallen Angel", written about the death of Kurt Cobain and an appropriate title on this vixens album. Also don't over look the haunting melody of "Father's Field", a true song written about the rape she endured at the hands of her father. And finish off the album dancing and laughing at song "Okey Dokey", whose main (and only) lines are "okey dokey doggy daddy yummy mummy sugar". I can't praise her enough. Buy this album, I guarentee you'll LOVE it!

3-0 out of 5 stars For all you who THINK you know what you're talking about..
I just finishing reading Ms. Lord's autobiography "Underneath it All" and decided to check out some of her music. While it seems talented, I feel I must correct some of the reviews. It is mistakenly said numerous times that in the song "Father's Field" Traci is speaking about being raped by her father. If you refer to her book, she was never raped by her father. She was raped at the age of 10 or 11, I forget which, by her first boyfriend, a boy of 16. Later on in life, she was molested in her sleep by her mother's boyfriend, someone she trusted but nonetheless took advantage of her. But her real father never committed any of these crimes, although was a bad seed in other ways. Just had to say my peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!
I normally tend to stay away from the techno genre, as i find it too repetitive and boring after awhile. This cd is so different though. I loved it. The first six tracks are unbelievable! Traci's seductive whispery voice on the first track called Control is perfect for this style of music. There is such a seductive, hypnotic, dreamy quality to this song, i was hooked on first listen. The next track Fallen Angel is even better and has that same beautiful quality to it: angelic and haunting background singers and Traci's soft and sultry voice over a driving beat and even a touch of Flamenco guitar. Amazing! Both of these songs sound great in a car when you're driving down the highway. Outlaw Lover is one of the standout tracks on the cd that will have you wanting to hear it again and again. It's catchy and very cheesy, but in a fun and totally likeable way. I can totally see Mitsou or Stacey Q doing this song and having the vocals sound very similar. Good And Evil has a very German techno meets James Bond sound to it that is great. I can see why these songs would be good movie soundtrack songs. The slower songs took awhile to grow on me and lack a lot of the impact of the first six tracks, but i enjoy them very much and they don't deminish the quality of the cd at all. The song Father's Fields is a very disturbing and personal song about when she was raped by her father when she was a kid. It's not an enjoyable song to listen to, but it's one that should be heard and is an important song. The final track Okey Dokey is annoying and cute all at the same time. Personally i think the cd could have done without it, but i'm still giving this cd top marks and highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Babble fans - 2 Babble songs here
