The tempo is not extremely fast, and Talla's mixing is excellent. My only complaint is that the CD was partitioned into tracks incorrectly in some places (e.g. Track 6 starts in the middle of the 6th song). In all other respects, however, this CD is extremely impressive. Enjoy.
I played this CD for my girlfriend and it made her stomach hurt it was so evil sounding. I love it thought all the dark sounds, especially the voice in the "Revelation". That's enough to send chills down any ones spine. Not to worry though if you not into the darkness, after it reaches "The Voyage", it turns the darkness into beauty, and the warm happy feelings come alive the rest of the CD. Lots of good hard tracks, very original. This disk doesn't get boring or annoying. It keeps changing enough to keep me interested. I didn't like it too much when I first got it, maybe because of the intimate doom that lingers over the first three tracks, but the more I listened to it the more I grew to love it. Excellent Trance Anthems, so if you're an anthem fan, especially if you like darkness spun into your sets, this would be worth checking out.

The second disc, however - I don't think I've ever heard a CD as good as this one. Warren takes us on a journey from the first beat of the first track right up until the end, and along the way we hear everything from eastern sounding instruments on Madagascar's "Your Beautiful" to exotic chanting on Voices of Khawan's "Ya Yea Yo Yo Ma" to hard sounding synths in Forth's "Reality Detached" and gorgeous vocals in Tekara's "Breath In You". This disc has it all, the perfect build up and peaks that can make listening to this disc while driving a near hazardous experience :) Bottom line here is that your paying for a 2CD set even though there's only one disc here that's really worth bothering with - but its sooooo unbelievably good that it makes the price very well worth it. The only thing I've heard that even comes close is Sasha's Global Underground Ibiza album.
CD1 immediately grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. Each track is packed with energy and has a degree of raw grit to it. Those worth noting are "Marching Powder", "Lose It" (my favourite), "India", "Tequila Flange", and "New Sunset". CD2 lets the listener breathe a little easier, as it isn't as intense as disc one. "Psychout (Thing)" rocks. "Your Beautiful" and "Kill City" are relatively mellow. "Reality Detached" is a favourite with its quick, heavy drum beats and gritty synths. "Ya Yae Ya Yo Yo Yo", is, as one can draw from its title, weird. O.K., who pulled Café del Mar off the shelf?! Tekara's "Breathe In You" makes up for it, though. Pink Bomb's "Indica" and POB's "Boiler" are two remaining tracks worth noting on this disc. This Global Underground compilation is a great starter for those who want to become acquainted with Nick Warren. Sure, it's over four years old, but it still manages to sound as fresh and as different from everything else that's out there these days. Classic trance at its best.
Nick Warren spins house, trance and some early progressive house tracks into a wonderful mix. CD1 starts out with a harder edge, and picks up the melodies around track 6 and never lets you down again. CD2 starts off beautifully and never stops, with the most energy featured on a GU release (IMO). There are a few tiny flaws in the mixing between a few songs, but its nothing noticeable if you're completely lost in the mix as I typically am when I have this set going. To sum up this mix in a few words: This is a timeless mix. It still sounds good today, several years after its release. Great tracks, no cheese, no filler; Its Nick Warren. What else would you expect?
Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. ... Read more

Hope this helps in making your choice to add this CD to your electronic collection. Now that I own Urbal Beats Vol. 1, 2, & 3, I can say that Vol. 1 is probably the best.

Prodigy's "No Good" and "Choose Life" featuring Ewan McGregor are the songs I use to pack the dance floor as well as BT's "Flaming June", Atomic Babies "Smiles" and The Propellaheadz "Take California". I can never get enough of "Fat Boy Slim's" BIG BEAT. "Going Out Of My Head" delivers big time with a sample reference to The Who's "Can't Explain". And definilty check out Doormouse's "414". It is the most hardcore dance track I have ever heard. Also this cd's pacing is very good meaning it doesn't drag like most techno, dance & electro cd's. This is one of BoBo's "Required Listening" and is the beginning of an awesome collection of music for you. Digital Empire II & III deliver the same type of diversiry as this cd. Try this one first BiBi from BoBo
Disc One starts off with one of my favorite songs and bands on here: "No Good (Start the Dance)" by The Prodigy. It's an almost un-Prodigy-like track--particularly if you're used to their songs like "Firestarter" and "Smack My B*tch Up"--mainly because of the female vocals. A few of my other favorites on Disc One are pretty much the obvious choices: "Busy Child" by The Crystal Method, "Roots" by Mark Verbos (ok, not so obvious), and "Choose Life" by PF Project featuring Ewan McGregor from the movie "Trainspotting" (no f-ing four-letter UK swears here, though; it's all censored). In my opinion, this latter track (#11) should have traded places with the last track on Disc One: "Shnowed In" by Hawke. Number 12's ok (though I tend to forget it and turn the CD off after 11), but 11 would have made a better finale. Disc Two, as well, opens with another good song: "Block Rockin' Beats" by The Chemical Brothers. Like Disc One, it's full of mainstream, high-energy songs (like a few of my faves: "Going Out of My Head" by Fatboy Slim, "One 4 Da Head" by Buzz Fiend, "414" by Doormouse, and "Born Slippy" by Underworld--yet another track off the "Trainspotting" soundtrack), as well as some slower, more mellower tracks, such as two gems that come to mind: "Subconscious" by Rabbit in the Moon and "Flaming June" by BT. Together, these two CDs provide well over two hours of mostly high-energy electronica music. If you're a fan of more than a handful of bands/artists on here, then "Digital Empire: Electronica's Best" is definitely a must-have. You'll love it. Also recommended: all the other "Digital Empire" CDs.

This CD has several 'straight' (not remixed) techno/dance/electronica singles which are just great listening, and a few other cuts that simply grate on your ears. This was recorded a few years back, when techno/big beat was more daring and experimental (before it started to sound stupid: like old-ladies "jazz" with a beat added) The 2 versions of "We Have Explosive" by The Future Sound Of London might seem excessive, but the two versions are different enough that they enhance, rather than detract from the overall musical quality. Besides, that song is so good here, you WANT to hear it 2 or 3 times. "Atom Bomb", by Fluke and a better-than-the original version of Chemical Brothers' "Loops of Fury" are good enough to make you want to play them each again, and again. "Firestarter" by Prodigy, also sounds better here. Buried surprises (good ones), include tracks from Orbital, and Leftfield. What's really mind-blowing is: this is a soundtrack from a video game! Just a bit of warning may be in order: don't listen to this and drive at the same time if there are any traffic police in the area. BTW: This sounded terrific through my new Klipschorns! Thanks to Paul W. Klipsch for his pioneering work in audio engineering over teh past 6 decades.
Let me point out the differences. The above soundtrack has 14 tracks, the following of which are not on the actual PlayStation game: 02 Fluke - Atom Bomb Besides that, FSOL's We Have Explosive lasts 6:14, while the PlayStation version stops a little abruptly at 5:53, and Underworld's Tin There stops at 5:00, while the PlayStation version is 6:08. The PlayStation disc has 11 audio tracks, the following of which are missing from the above soundtrack CD: 03 FSOL - Landmass The PlayStation selection is much less harsh than the soundtrack CD. The soundtrack-only "herd killing" version of We Have Explosive is a pretty good track, but other than that, the PlayStation CD is much better. The PlayStation-only tracks are all good, especially Dust Up Beats and Canada. Dust Up Beats is something Chemical Brothers have played live, but I haven't seen it on any CD besides the PlayStation WOXL. Another odd thing about the WOXL soundtrack is that the version of Petrol it has is the same as the version on Orbital's In-Sides CD, except the WOXL version fades out at 5:49, while the real one is 6:20. 1999's Wipeout 3 also has 13 songs, but it's only available for PlayStation. It has six great original Sasha tracks, a 4:03 version of Paul Van Dyk's Avenue (showed up later on his Out There And Back CD), a 3:06 version of Underworld's Kittens (from Beaucoup Fish), the album version of Chem Bros' Under the Influence (from Surrender), two MKL tracks, and Orbital - Know Where to Run & Propellerheads - Lethal Cut, which I don't think are on any other CD's.
Electronica today (2003) isn't quite what it used to be back when it was new and clearly still experimental and at the top of its form. This 78:18 CD offers up some classic tracks that will last forever. I have a lot of CDs from various electronica artists that have songs on this compilation (Fluke, FSOL, Orbital, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy) and others that don't (namely Crystal Method) and they're all great but none quite capture the diverse essence of what electronica can encompass. This is that CD! The version of Atom Bomb on here is a cleaned-up AND remixed version of the original on Fluke's own Risotto CD. None of the other reviews really pointed that out.
Maybe you bought 'Exit Planet Dust' but if you missed out on the Chemical Brothers' (in my opinion) best single "Loops of Fury", you could atone buy picking up this disc. The instrumental version of "Firestarter" is better than the original, and "PETROL" is not representative of the Orbital album ('In Sides') it comes from, but still kicks. The whole 'Electronica' wave was over-done and rightfully put in its proper place on the musical scheme of things, but in retrospect, there were some singles you had to own, and this is a superb compilation of them. Made to be booming out of your convertible, even if it's a k-car. ... Read more

Fans of other Bukem CD's might enjoy this, but I'd recommend Logical Progression as a more suitable starting point for those just beginning to explore his catalouge.
I am a big time LTJ fan, but don't let that thought underestimate the importance of this cd. Featuring many all time progressive jungle classics this cd is a must have for everyone who enjoys electronic music out there. Oh MC Conrad is magnificinet as always. You will especially enjoy his words rythmically blending to the beats and few lyrics of (Adam F's) Circles. The other tracks are great too. Don't wait just buy it.

I have four volumes of the Body and Soul Mixes and none of them have let me down. Highly recommended. Francois K. Joe Clausell and others bring their best. Absolutely fabulous.
There is nothing like being at Body & Soul or Vinyl in NYC and since I can't get there readily, Body and Soul Vol. 1 takes me there spiritually! If you are a true househead, this has to be in your collection. I can compare the feeling that this cd generates with that of Byron Stingily's "the Purist" and Joe Clausell's CD (forgot the name). I'm digging it! I'm feeling it! You gotta get it. Truly Vibin'! Look out for Vol. 2!!!!!!

The packaging is beautiful -- a heavyweight black box covered with hip lettering and disturbing images; three black CD cases containing labeled discs and a listing with artist, cut, time and version information; and a terrific booklet that relates the anecdotal history of Wax Trax! -- it's artistically interesting as well as substantive and entertaining. If you enjoy industrial music, you cannot go wrong with this incredible collection of the music and people that started it all. And why not put a few bucks into the pockets of the guys who loved the music more than the profits?

Album Description Reviews (9)
Then Robert Miles comes on. I had heard Robert Miles before this album and expected his set to be a completely 'fluffy' dream trance voyage, but is instead some of the best psy trance I've ever heard. He starts out with a touch of melody that tears it's way into Nick Warren's Way Out West and goes from there with some of the most creative in your face psy trance I've ever heard making this album a must have for anyone who appriciates a good progressive house set with a screaming psy trance close out.
I have too many mixes to compare to this, other than Sasha, but I'd say it's worth 30 bucks if you can tolerate old-fashioned house and a few other influences next to your trance. If not, buy Oakie or a Sasha mix.
This 3 CD set is an import and thus very expensive. Before you buy, check out the other Renaissance Worldwide releases, the London mix and Volume One. Both are far superior in consistancy and mixing. The Singapore set isn't bad, but not really worth the price. Disc One, David Morales, is very housy and not really my taste. Some of the songs kick in the booty, but I've never listened to this CD the whole way through...too many wailing women, too 'cheesy'. Disc Two by Dave Seamen is very good, and a bit more esoteric than his London mix. The last third of the CD really opens up, espicially the Garbage remix. Disc Three by BT is OK, but has its faults: he extends some of these songs too long without variety, and on other songs he 'layers' the sound a little too thick, marring great tunes like 'Bad Girl.' This CD ends very strong. Better than most 'techno' released in the US, but not on a par with other releases on this label. Kudos for experimentation, though. ... Read more

First Disc, is mixture of house and garage with trance to end it off. It starts off with not much pace but slowly makes it way to a nice peak time on "Paradise" and ends with "Greece 2000" Second Disc: a Jungle track to begin, and like the first side, some nice chill out tunes . Everything gets loose on albion "air" and than gets crazy on an Oakenfold regular "Nautical Bodies" , than staying with the trance beat he kicks in another of of his usuals with "Dream Universe" This ends this crazy journey with a nice epic tune at the end. Now this is a complete mix. Forget Tranceport. And get Global Underground 07. Oaky in his true form, and not that commercial junk. Also, if you want to hear Oakenfold live at the "Courtyard" than get the Resident cd, which is also good.
The two Global Underground mixes Oakenfold has crafted show his dj-ing skills at their peak, however. This "New York" set was terrifically exciting when it was released in spring 1998, as many of the tracks were still "white label," and hence fresh and exciting. By now (mid-1999), the material is "old," but the mix still works, particularly certain sequences on disc one, including his ethereal sequencing of Taste Experience's "Summersault," The Fathers of Sound's "Water," and Solar Stone's "Day by Day" (mislabeled on the cd liner notes, by the way). For anyone the least bit curious as to what all the excitement is about regarding European trance and progressive house, and in particular, fine dj mixes blended from this material, this set is an excellent starting point for further exploration.
From the serenading vocals of Mystica - Bliss and Jamie Myerson to the subsequent chill vibrations of Solarstone and Taste Experience to the mesmerizing beats of Oakenfold's Touch remixes and 3 Drives - Greece, CD1 takes the listener on a rollercoaster ride of emotion and excitement that doesn't let up throughout the first act. CD2 starts off with a drum-n-bass remix of Ambrosia's "Inside your arms", which offers a laid-back lounge sound in contrast to the build-up in rhythem and emotion that encompasses CD1. This atmosphere continues for several tracks through the wistful tones of Talisman & Hudson, Junk Project, and the relaxing waves of sound of Albion - Air. Then, just before the end of "Burning Flame", a rapid buildup of energy occurs and we are once again thrust into a dreamlike sequence of melodic trance, starting with "Balla con Ritmo" by Cyclone Tracy (awfully reminiscent of Andry Nalin and Kanes "Beachball") and continuing well towards the end of the CD. While Paul Oakenfold is no Tiesto or Sasha when it comes to mixing and great transitions, his versatility as a DJ who is able to combine elements of trance, house, psychedelic, drum-n-bass, and bring together unique tunes into an overall euphonic experience is unrivaled, even by the likes of Nick Warren, Deep Dish, and Sasha & Digweed.
