5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and challenging
Mille Plateaux is a peculiar little label that never seems to disappoint. This fourth installment of their Modulation and Transformation series is a great example of what the label can offer its listeners. This time the compilation includes 3 full CDs of experimental audio. The usual suspects are present, including the likes of Gas, DJ Spooky, Curd Duca, Achim Wollscheid, Steel, Kerosene, Freiland... the list goes on and on. Perhaps one of the highlights of the entire decade in electronic music is the very first track on this compilation, "Genrecide" by Terre Thaemlitz. Its sublime hints of melody and atmospheres of thin drones, coupled with the usual snippets of voiceovers (this time buried in the mix) set the mood perfectly for the spirit of experimentation and the high caliber of music to follow through all 3 discs. Also, Panacea's offering is a highlight, much more ferocious and less accessible than his usual drum and bass tracks, perhaps a sign of what was to follow with his later works. Highly recommended: you will not find this volume of material, in quantity or quality, for this price. Truly a great value! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't let this one get away...
Sometimes it takes a good bit of searching to find the right deep, minimal techno to quench your thirst. If you are reading this, congratulations, you've somehow managed to find a great work. Jonas Bering is a name I'd never heard of myself until I bought a random deep techno 12" record with his name on it. Later I discovered he had a CD, "bienfait," which in French translates "kind deed." Certainly it is a kind deed of Jonas to bless our ears with this smooth composition and its' innocuous delivery of electronic dub techno. Not as cold, repetative, or raw as Porter Ricks (whom I also admire) but a slightly smoother and experimental flavor similar to acts like MRI or UNAI. And best of all, Mr. Bering doesn't hold back on track lengths due to CD format; track "8" is over 13 minutes long! The CD artwork is beautiful, and rather than pulling obscure track titles out of a hat, Jonas decides to display no track listing at all. Nice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finest subtle techno from France
Amazing debut album by this french artist on the mike ink's label KOMPAKT in Cologne. Over 60mn of a post basic channel journey and also a post minimal kölner style way. Jonas Bering lives and works in Lille. He convices in crackling dub, fast deep unbelievable elevation, or also club anthem. You can't be a fan of KOMPAKT and CHAIN REACTION and live without the album "Bienfait" of Jonas Bering KOMPAKT CD5 KOMPAKT 18 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sacred To Me
I had never listened to any music that made me feel like dancing or made me feel good for that matter, until i found out about Jeff Mills and listened to this album, Every Dog Has It's Day and his new one At First Sight. I've heard that his fans consider him a God and I agree. That his songs can be both danceable and meditative is such a rare and masterful accomplishment. The song Pacific State Of Mind is the most wonderful and happy song i've ever heard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jeff Mills is the man.
Minimal, soulful, driving, simultaneously harsh and soothing. It's hypnotic music equally suited to the highway and the headphones.
If you are at all a fan of the "detroit" sound this is some seriously sublime techno. The production, mastering and sequencing are all first-rate. This selection of tracks works as an album.
Jeff Mills uses a set of sounds that are unique to him, and they take a few listens to really win you over, but once they do you'll be a Mills devotee and congratulate yourself on having such good taste in music.

4-0 out of 5 stars King of Detroit techno demonstrates brilliance
I bought this album on a whim after I saw that Richie Hawtin remixed some of Mills' tracks on Hawtin's Decks, EFX & 909 album. The Art of Connecting was pretty much my intro to the "Detroit" techno sound. My immediate thoughts were that this album walks the line between IDM and housey trance, and I think that's a fair assesment. There's little here that will get the party started, unless your parties involve four people zonig off in a candle lit room. But that's a good thing. When you put this on you'll have listened to eight tracks before you even realize there has been eight tracks. The changes are subtle but brilliant and Mills demonstrates a mastery of his equipment. This album rewards the attentive listener in spades. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A pleasant diversion for the purists
It's time to put on those starched, clean clothes and get down to some rigidly rhythmic techno, once again courtesy of Berlin label Tresor. In an era of amazingly prolific laptop rock - you can't throw a 303 without hitting some bedroom producer clicking away on their minimal glitch-opus or drill'n'bass cacophony - straight laced techno has been surprisingly hard to find, slipping even further under the radar Stateside.

Rounding up a dozen of the prominent producers in the field, this track order slowly reveals the simple power of drum machine and synth production. Mostly mellow and subdued tones play out the start, Stewart Walker's "Boring Movies" best exemplifying an ability to move listeners with sparse elements. Drexciya amps the energy, providing their expected bubble funk on "Species of the Pod," followed by Aril Brikha's excellent "Groove la Chord," taken off the "Deepartures in Time" solo album. The tempo turns hot with cuts by Claude Young and Pacou, finishing with the best track on the set, James Ruskin's "Detached."

Though it reveals a fluid journey of black light programming, Tresor Comp Vol. 8 works better as a sampler; most tracks are representative of these artists' work. Perhaps too monotonous for the uninitiated, it's nonetheless a pleasing diversion for the purists. Grade: B

4-0 out of 5 stars Tresor Records Keeps the Faith
Well, the first thing you should know is that the track listing Amazon has listed is in a different order then what is on the CD. Obviously, a minor point. The second thing you should know is that Four of the tracks (Terrence Dixon, Drexciya, Sterac and James Ruskin) have already been released on previous Tresor records. Two of the remaining tracks are from other labels (Round Two/Main Street Records, Aril Brikha/Fragile Records). The remaining six tracks are "New Exclusive". This record covers the expected territory, ranging from the underwater Detroit-techno funk of Drexciya to the dubby post-techno minimalism of Round Two. All of the tracks are quality cuts, no throw-aways here. This record is probably best purchased by those of you (like me) who have only a limited level of exposure to the "Tresor sound". Hardcore heds may feel that this comp breaks little new ground, but given the limited availability of Tresor released materials states-side, the fact that this record is likely to remain in stock and available for the forseeable future counts highly in its favor. All-in-all, a solid comp filled with cutting edge Berlin-Detroit techno. If you're already considering buying this disc, you should pull the trigger and pick it up. If, on the other hand, you already have an extensive collection of Tresor releases (DJ's, I'm talking to you) you could probably skip it. Likewise, if you don't know anything about the magic that is Tresor records, well, you probably won't even be reading this review... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Abrupt track cuts - this stinks
The cuts themselves are pretty good, but the people putting it together went to no effort to make them run together nicely. Often times, they just cut off in the middle of a song. Other times, it's an abrupt fadeout that pays no attention to the form of the song.

I read the other review about this before buying it. I ignored the review and bought it anyway. I wish I had listened and bought something else. This one is a loser.

1-0 out of 5 stars dissapointed
if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. the tracklisting for this cd is a dream come true. unfortunately the cd justprovides an overview of each song. don't get me wrong, most of the tracks are outstanding. the problem is they are severely edited down to 2 or 3 mins each and abrubtly faded down. this should be clearly marked on the package. this is actually a marketing gimmick to whet your appetite to get you to buy the full versions of the music you like. i have no use for an overview. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Killer!
Just like the inventor of this guillotine, this album is a killer. With hard tracks like Night Light and Dirty Girl, you can't go wrong. The rest of the album is also great. This isn't your typical techno, it comes on hard and doesn't let go. If you like DJ's like DJ T-1000 or Azteq, you'll almost certainly love this. The only popular DJ I can think of who might spin something similar to this is Marco V, but that's only to emphasize that hard nature of it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Major groove!!!
I liked his album and his singles are just grrrrreat!!! DJ Tonka can make very groovy and funky but also very relaxing tracks. Like on this single the spring mix for example is not some usual dancefloor-stuff but a musical experience and straight mix is for those who like to kick hard and party on!!! DJ Tonka can make music with very wide scale and that's why I like his tracks so much. He has a unique style which is still improving all the time.

ps. and if some of you might know dj tonka's website etc could you please inform me via e-mail??? thanks.
