Deep Down & Dirty is the fourth album from the Stereo MC's, though it could easily be their 10th, given the number of tracks that have hit thecutting-room floor in the intervening years. And yet just one listen to it makes it seem as if the U.K.'s premier crossover hip-hop act have never been away. The album's title track and lead single find rapper Rob Birch back in inspired form, freestyling those positive vibes over filthy, irresistible funk. "We Belong in This World Together" is a huge sing-along anthem; "Breeze" is dubbed-up urban soul with swirling atmospherics and Vocoder mumblings; "Traffic" is a colossal, up-front groove that culminates with Birch declaring, "It ain't easy, it ain't easy." Clearly not, but you'd never know from listening to this record. --Mike Pattenden ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Getting 'Deep, Down and Dirty...'
Stereo Mc's
Deep Down and Dirty
Island/Universal

Over the years, Stereo MC's Connected would never left my cd player for months on end. One of the most entertaining live acts to come out of the early 90's, they opened and blew fellow alty-brats Jesus Jones out of the water when they appeared in Montreal to support the seminal release back in 1992. UK's premier crossover hip hop act release Deep Down and Dirty some nine years later only to show their absence has made them deeper, downer and dirtier and tighter with the funk. Rob Birch's unique commanding, half-rap, half-sung mantra is back along with an irresistible, filthy fusion of rap, funk, with stabs of dance rock blockin' beats. Lead off single/title track "Deep Down and Dirty" remind us of what made Connected such a refreshing, melting pot of booty shaking rhythm and rhyme. "We Belong In This World Together" a sing along anthem, reminds us about the positive/intelligent lyrical quotient the band is known for. "Breeze" and "Traffic" are the standout dubbed up urban tracks that highlight stellar levels of production along with the culmination of all the variables into a near flawless mix.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dig down deep into your pockets and buy this!
Well worth the 9 year wait. Some bands get worse with age but not so with Stereo MC's. They stay true to their original dub-funk, hip-hop beat that blends perfectly with Rob B's raw yet melodious vocals. This CD is just as good as Connected and Supernatural. Dig down deep into your pockets and buy this!

5-0 out of 5 stars YES YES YES
As music transcends words, as the rhythm defies definition, so will any review fail analyze this album. Not that there is some thing mysterious about it, nor dose it speak in tongues. I feel it is right to say that in this album the whole is much larger then the sum of the words written about it. It is complete in the sense that every track is good as a stand alone jewel, it is complete in the sense that combined together they are even better. This album IS about music, and there is little to add in term of labels, for any cataloging will fail dead in its tracks.
This album is not for the faint hart, for the seekers of serenity, it is not for those who listen to dwell in soft ambient light. It is hard and fast. It is the rock and the hard place.
It gave me many hours of pleasure. A pleasure that came from deep down inside.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this CD, and Stereo MC's other two, too...
I bought Deep, Down & Dirty, loved it and played it non-stop
until I needed more. Then I bought Connected; same story. Then
I bought Supernatural American Mix.

Best rap I've ever heard. And deliciously, lusciously funky.
If only I could convince the ditzy DJ's I know to play this
stuff...

Highly recommended songs:
"The Right Effect" (Deep, Down & Dirty)
"Don't Let Up" (Connected)
"Declaration" (Supernatural)

4-0 out of 5 stars Early 90s Fans Rejoice!
Its as if Stereo Mcs didnt take a break. As accessible as Connected, if not more, Deep plummets into crunchy, funky beats without being too much or not enough. "We Belong In This World Together" is a must hear for any fan who still believed a comeback would happen. The title track beeps and blips itself into your heart, while "Sophisticated" just simply makes you smile. While these songs wont win over everybody and break much ground in the world of laptops, drum machines, 20 or so soul singers, and vocoders, it will definitely win over those kids who dug "Connected" all 1,000 times they played it on MTV, K-Mart, and your favorite tv commercial. Thats deep, man. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT DANCE SINGLE FOR 2002
I like everyone else heard this song on the ubiqtious Mitsubushi commerical with all the passenagers getting their "groove on".
It sounded like one of those dance songs you'd hear late night at a tamer rave. But I liked it.So this morning,I see the video on VH1 and I came to like it.The video's concept of a breakdancer who breakdances his life away on the street corner after his girlfriend leaves him is quite clever,I must say and is a good vibe for the song.

This song is reministic of those dance songs from 1997,the year when MTV and major labels got more hip to dance music. The year of the Chemical Brothers,Roni Size,Propellerheads,Death In Vegas...I could go on."Days Go By" could be a big crossover pop hit.
It's good that advertisers are using unknown dance/techno songs in their national TV ad campaigns because it opens a music fan's ear to a song they usually wouldn't hear...

5-0 out of 5 stars Eclipse Song #2
Great dance tune...and the new Mitsubishi Eclipse commercial does it justice. Love the hot girl "popping" in the passenger seat. Wonder if Mitsubishi will do for this band what it did for the Wiseguys "Start the Commotion" in last year's Eclipse commercial. The first track is the best on this CD single. Can't wait to see the music video.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect
This CD would've been perfect, had they skipped the re-make of a certain rock song I won't mention here!!!! The rest was great!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars HYPNOTIC
The hypnotic quality of this sad love song shines through on all 4 mixes (my Australian import includes the 9 minute Lucien Foort Remix) of this tune (even the acoustic version).

1-0 out of 5 stars More pop garbage
I think its funny how many people are into this, just because its in a car commercial. This song is third rate compared to much of the dance that came out last year. Of course those songs weren't in catchy commercials...

Go ahead and keep eating up what ever the mainstream tosses you and act like you are the unique little flower who picked this as your favorite song.

I preferred these guys as the Hydrogen Rockers, before they softened up and sold out. ... Read more

British DJ-producer Nick Warren has long been making mixes and music for highway consumption. Most of his Global Underground compilations, such as Amsterdam, lend themselves to long road trips and smooth shifts in velocity. So it's no surprise that this, another project with Bristol dance music wunderkind Jody Wisternoff, is also made for movement. Consisting of progressive trance with some soulful textures and melodies woven into its fabric, Intensify is more emotionally balanced than a straightforward mix, yet it retains enough beat-driven drama to work comfortably as a continuous affair.

"The Fall," already a club anthem, kicks things off, then the record moves through the interstate trance of "Activity," the ethereal "Hypnotise," and the pedal-to-the-metal "Intensify Part 01." The duo also get a touch experimental on songs like "Stealth," featuring Kirsty Hawkshaw, and the exciting, expansive tribal trance of "UB Devoid." Like almost everything involving Nick Warren, Intensify is a fine release brimming with creativity, passion, and a curious but successful juxtaposition of the familiar and unknown. --Steffan Chirazi ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking...
Occasionally, there comes an artist who is completely brilliant, and Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff certainly fit the part on this artist CD. Nick's originality shines through this album, going from the trance of "The Fall" to the chilled-out "Stealth" to the tribal "Shark Hunt." Every track is great, well written, with standouts being "Hypnotise" and "Secret." The CD is definitely worth having.

The Bedrock remix at the end of the album is possibly the only flaw. It's not clear what's gotten into Digweed, but it seems he's trying to apologize for his anthemic (and incredible) "Heaven Scent" by creating song after song of dreary, percussive, boring "music." The track is awful, and it strips all of the beautiful melody and bassline of the original track.

In short, buy the CD. Don't listen to the so-called "bonus track."

4-0 out of 5 stars Warren & Wisternoff impress.
The sickeningly talented individuals Nick Warren and Jody Wisternoff came together to form a sickeningly talented duo dubbed Way Out West. Intensify is their first album, and while not as sickeningly fantastic as one would expect, is a great disc.

Intensify is a strange album in that each track toys with different sounds and style; the CD as a whole is quite experimental. WoW's first starts quickly with The Fall, an interesting but not outstanding dance number. Activity is the follow-up, a kinetic and dreamy number that's gotten much deserved acclaim and play time. Call Me is dark and moody, Hypnotise bright and upbeat, and Sharkhunt is well, intense, and would sound very at home in a big-budget spy movie. Stealth slows the album down a bit, with a lovely piano melody, though the vocals sound somewhat unpolished. UB Devoid is the most club-influenced sounding track; very danceable and slick. Mindcircus is a gorgeous chillout number, and Secret a fascinating mix of tribal sounds with cutting edge synths.

Overall, Warren and Wisternoff's baby is a great listen. It's an extremely creative and fresh album, with some very strong numbers. Unfortunately, nothing on the album really jumps out at you. While there's nothing bad on this CD, it never quite breaks into 5 star territory, a surprising fact given its creators. Still, Intensify is a wonderful addition to any electronic music fan's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I love Armin Van Buuren, Paul van dyk, Lasgo, Orbital, and lots others. I think that Way Out West is awesome. I dont understand how sunrider doesnt like them. This is a awesome CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!!
This has got to be one of the best CDs I've come across, spanning dance through chillout genres ... it is one continuous, beautiful CD with absolutely no filler .... how many CDs can you say that about? From the amazing "Mindcircus" to the driving "The Fall" (sampling Coldcut's Autumn Leaves) to the gorgeous "Stealth", this is a brilliant addition not just to your dance music collection, but to your music experience in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good time

5-0 out of 5 stars An aural soundscape for the ages....
The first disc of this set I found to be a bit repetitive and boring.

The second disc, however - I don't think I've ever heard a CD as good as this one. Warren takes us on a journey from the first beat of the first track right up until the end, and along the way we hear everything from eastern sounding instruments on Madagascar's "Your Beautiful" to exotic chanting on Voices of Khawan's "Ya Yea Yo Yo Ma" to hard sounding synths in Forth's "Reality Detached" and gorgeous vocals in Tekara's "Breath In You". This disc has it all, the perfect build up and peaks that can make listening to this disc while driving a near hazardous experience :)

Bottom line here is that your paying for a 2CD set even though there's only one disc here that's really worth bothering with - but its sooooo unbelievably good that it makes the price very well worth it. The only thing I've heard that even comes close is Sasha's Global Underground Ibiza album.

4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat of a disparity in the CDs but....
CD2 is Outstanding. CD1 is mediocre at best. This said, I really appreciate Nick Warren's style. Ive been on the Oakenfold bandwagon for a while and I decided to try out Warren and I immediately noticed some differences. His mixing is somewhat more aggresive than Oakie and somewhat quicker. You dont hear the beginning of the next song like 2 minutes from the end of the prior song. I have no idea why Cafe Del Mar (or why its ALSO ON live in pargue) is on this album but the rest of the songs on CD2 are great: exciting music but not overdone. This is certainly one of my favorites in the Global Underground Set: Warren is an accessible DJ, he stays away from the really dark trance that has made, in my opinion, Sasha and Digweed somewhat unpalatable anymore. 5 stars for CD2 (Random Comment: Your Beautiful is a really fun fun song) 3for CD1. A decent album. Get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Trancer With Balls...
-
This album is dripping with high energy, funk, bass and near flawless mixing. It is by no means for the faint of heart, and not for those who are looking for clubby, cheese-filled tracks. This is pure, unadulterated house trance devoid of anthems and cheese vocals.

CD1 immediately grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go. Each track is packed with energy and has a degree of raw grit to it. Those worth noting are "Marching Powder", "Lose It" (my favourite), "India", "Tequila Flange", and "New Sunset".

CD2 lets the listener breathe a little easier, as it isn't as intense as disc one. "Psychout (Thing)" rocks. "Your Beautiful" and "Kill City" are relatively mellow. "Reality Detached" is a favourite with its quick, heavy drum beats and gritty synths. "Ya Yae Ya Yo Yo Yo", is, as one can draw from its title, weird. O.K., who pulled Café del Mar off the shelf?! Tekara's "Breathe In You" makes up for it, though. Pink Bomb's "Indica" and POB's "Boiler" are two remaining tracks worth noting on this disc.

This Global Underground compilation is a great starter for those who want to become acquainted with Nick Warren. Sure, it's over four years old, but it still manages to sound as fresh and as different from everything else that's out there these days. Classic trance at its best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Energy, Style, Quality.
Global Underground has been a label known for its quality releases, and GU008 is one of the releases that helped build that reputation.

Nick Warren spins house, trance and some early progressive house tracks into a wonderful mix. CD1 starts out with a harder edge, and picks up the melodies around track 6 and never lets you down again. CD2 starts off beautifully and never stops, with the most energy featured on a GU release (IMO). There are a few tiny flaws in the mixing between a few songs, but its nothing noticeable if you're completely lost in the mix as I typically am when I have this set going.

To sum up this mix in a few words: This is a timeless mix. It still sounds good today, several years after its release. Great tracks, no cheese, no filler; Its Nick Warren. What else would you expect?

5-0 out of 5 stars Quit my job because of Nick Warren
I was working in the visual effects industry and paid well blah blah .... Somewhere in between purchasing the Budapest & Amsterdam GU CD's (which I had to compulsively buy after hearing new Way Out West CD), I decided to leave the industry and pursue making music. Nick Warrens music fills me with inspiration and desire to want to surpass his standard which will take more than a hefty amound of work i'll tell you that no matter who you are as a muso. I purschased this CD with expectations of the standards I usually expect from Mr Warren. CD1, I havent gotten into that yet, but Im sure I will. However, CD2 is going to keep me up for the next week.

Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. ... Read more

Norway’s Ralph Myerz follows up the buzz-heavy A Special EP with this full-length effort, a rather weightless yet pleasing mix of good-natured cheese and sunny downtempo. With a light trip-hop touch, Myerz draws from artists like Bent and Gus Gus while incorporating elements of dub and astral jazz. Some songs have a Martin Denny-esque exotica quality about them, like "Casino," but the record plays it straight most of the time, infusing mellow electronics with dreamy reverb and throbbing bass tones. The silky tones of the title track, for instance, create a sexed-up ambience ideal for late nights and candlelight. Myerz’s experiments do go occasionally awry; the retro-funk of "Funky Bizness" goes nowhere. Nevertheless, A Special Album promises great things in the future with its airy, off-kilter sensibilities. --Matthew Cooke ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "A SPECIAL ALBUM" WITHOUT A DOUBT!!!
I absolutely loooove this album!!! From the funky acid jazz on "Think Twice," to the 60s retro go-go of "Casino," to the bohemian soul of "You Never Come Closer" to the reggae sounds of "Savannah", Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herrin Band have truly created "A Special Album" for me. The boys from Norway really know how to jam and, oh, do they jam well, and in most cases--hard!! Every song on here is action-packed and original in sound and design. With actual instrumentation and a playful feel to the entire album, Ralph and the boys are sure to be the hit at every party!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a special album
A flash back to the 4x4 disco beats, blasting work on the skins mixed with trance samples and touching manipulation of the organ, brings this album to the surface. Truly I must say I have not been this leveled in quite a spell.
The organ work really comes alive on "Think Twice". Ray Charles may never have sounded this trendy, but the oragan work on this club-like anthem is sweet.
Ralph Myerz and the Jack Harren Band have a lot to live up to for the sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can't see these chaps live, then at least get this!
Ralph Myerz and The Jack Herren Band is a live band first and foremost. In fact that is how they got started. Ralph Myerz is a DJ based in Bergen and was doing a live gig at a festival and asked two friends (percussions and drums) to join him. This is the result of that event. They've recently been touring with a 4th member on guitar/bass and my instincts tell me he will be joining soon. So a DJ doing all the master track electro stuff, one guy (I'd like to call him animal, from the muppet show) on percussion and one on drums. With the occasional guitar/bass player. It's a lovely blend of electronica/jazz/rock/downtempo, extremely refreshing. And features a very catchy tune called Think Twice I can't stop listening to. Norwegian TV has an hour live from the Quart festival hosted online, you ought to check it out, they put on a heck of a live show. If not by this album it is fantastic!

3-0 out of 5 stars Cheery lounge with a good dollup of mellow electronics
Someone - it was either Phillip Glass or Britney Spears - once exclaimed "Pop music is the hardest stuff in the world to make!" That's certainly not a problem for the Ralph Myerz gang, who effortlessly spin yards of such catchy enticements on their A Special Album (a follow up to last year's EP).

Whipping up cheery lounge with a good dollup of mellow electronics, and a definite knack for memorable hooks, has certainly been done before. Elevating this work above such disposable kitsch is their delightfully detailed drums, layers of varied percussion popping within each piece for added depth.

But then again, that's analyzing too hard, certainly not the point here. "Casino" practically leaps off an Ocean 11 sequel soundtrack, a jaunty tell-all of Vegas piping with keyboards, "do-do" chorus, and cheeky dialogue for good measure. "Think Twice" has it all: squelchy keys to a bobbing bassline, Christine Sandtorv hinting, " maybe we oughta think twice, before we start something nice." Irresistible, and surely coming to an advert near you.

Playing it straight, "Here is Love" and "You Never Come Closer" lope along with all the requisite retro-organ touches and twinkles, and occasional lullaby vocals. "A Special Morning" adding a whistle for a western country nod. Experimenting gets them in trouble, as "Feel It's" smoked-out quirkiness and kr-azy horn scratching drops like a Fatboy Slim thud, as does "Savannah's" jarring trip-hop chanting thing.

Which is certainly acceptable for a bunch of Norway chaps with obvious potential for future delights. Not a great album, then, but the tag A Special Debut fits reasonably well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nonchallenging but enjoyable techno pop from Norway
This was the classic example of an impulse buy for me: it was playing in the store at the time, and I thought it was pretty groovy. Can't say I'll be listening to this one in a year or so, but there are a few solid pop tunes on here: #2, #3, and #4 come to mind. However, there are some clunky throwaways also, like #7 and #8. Not terribly challenging, but some nice songs to add to a cd mix. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok, But It's Been Done Better Elsewhere.
Johnny VIcious is capable of far better than this CD suggests. Too bad, because this is probably going to be the first time many people have heard "Johnny Vicious" material, and we all know how long first impressions last. After caareful evaluation and thought, this 2CD set seems designed to appeal to older women who attend aerobics classes, and maybe to older gay men who remember the 1970's/1980's as a great time. But it sounds like a major case of underachievement compared to what else is available.

Disk #2 is great techno with a trance-feel. But Disk #1 is a couple of nice contemporary dance hits with a bunch of really queeny disco filler thrown in. If this had been a one-disc [DISK #2] set, it would easily have rated 4 stars.

Fans of Disk #2 material will find far more rewarding song and mix selections on ALTERED STATES VOL 2 (mixed by Jon Cowan & Mike Hiratzka) or POLITICS OF DANCING (mixed by Paul Van Dyk).

Fans of Disk #1 material are a different crowd, and perhaps for them this IS a great selection. But it seems to be such a throwback to the 1970's or early 1980's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth getting
In my opinion, this cd offers a pretty good mix. I like how Johnny Vicious seperated the cds into Main Floor and Underground. While I get the feeling that not too many people like the Underground cd b/c it doesn't really have many words, it's still a pretty decent cd..it's more like something to unwind to after dancing up a storm. Main floor offers more of the popular songs you hear playing in the clubs, although Jerz-E clubs take a while to play songs like these (i.e. Forever by Dee-Dee). :( Many of these songs are repeated on other popular dance cds (like Louie DeVito's DanceFactory), but still its a good choice for a dance cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Compilation!!!!!!!!!
This compilation is incredible i bought it almost 2 years ago and i still listen to it. cd 1 is great untill about half way through it but cd 2 is so amazing that it makes up for the 2nd half of disc 1. If you love hard trance than buy this cd.

1-0 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY!
There's maybe one decent track on this cd. Its so not worth it. I wouldn't call it dance music either. Its more like top 40s remixed whatever. uht!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Fo Clubbin'!!!
This CD is so awesome! Songs like Amber's "Yes", Aubrey's "Stand Still", Iio's "Rapture", To be Able To Love, Resurrection, Forever, and Light A Rainbow: ROCK MY WORLD! This is one of the best techno CD's of the century. The songs I don't really like are Trippin, and La La Land. They are a discrace to music maker's everywhere! Anyway, all together, this is an awesome CD. If you like it, you have to check out DJ Encore and Engelina's award winning album "Intuition." Now that is quality listening! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars John Coltrane meets George Clinton meets Easy E
I've followed Liquid Soul since 1994 when they were strictly on the Chicago club circuit. The fact the band has risen to international prominence in the world of acid jazz since then should tell you something. Liquid soul is far more than a mere acid jazz band. This band is a fantastic act that combines Davis/Coltrane be-bop jazz, George Bensonesque guitar, George Clinton funk effects with hip-hop beats and rap.

This CD (their first)is nice because it combines some of their studio recordings (with all kinds of trippy effects and samples) with some of their live shows. Liquid Soul used to play every Sunday night at the Elbo Room in Chicago, and then moved to Sundays at the Double Door until 12/99. I believe the live recording portions are from one of their Elbo Room shows. The freestyle rap session at the end by their record-scratching DJ Jessie De La Pena is dope.

In my opinion this first submission is superior to the second effort "Make Some Noise" because it shows more dynamic range of the group. It has mellow, trippy parts and harder-edged funky stuff as well. The second album is more in-your-face all the way through.

Nevertheless, you will not be disappointed by anything this group puts out because the creativeness, production quality, and talent of the musicians (particularly the punchy horn section) is always top notch.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best things about living in Chicago!
I was thrilled to have the opportunity to see Liquid Soul play years ago live at the Double Door in Chicago (also frequented by the much missed Smashing Pumpkins), LONG before they became the sensation they are today. The fact that Bill Clinton invited them to play for him while he was in Chicago is very telling. These guys are amazing- an incredible fusion of acid jazz and R&B blues. Their sound is difficult to accurately describe, since each tune on this CD finds LS wearing a hat of a different color. I've always maintained that truly talented musicians/singers sound incredible live, without all the studio equipment to make them sound better than they really are (ahem- can you hear me, Geri Halliwell?). LS is no exception- they have pulled together the best musicians Chi-Town has to offer and delivered them on one fabulous CD. Don't miss the boat on this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This disc jams!
Listening to Liquid Soul live is the best audio experience I've ever had; this and their other two discs are the next best thing. Pure audio ecstasy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but "Make Some Noise" is better
I bought the "Make some Noise" album first and was blown away by it, but this one is much more reserved and instrumental. I was disappointed at first, but it grows on you after several plays. It is still outstanding acid jazz. Also, the occasional profanity on this one only detracts from the music.

5-0 out of 5 stars These guys rock!
I had the privilege of having these talented musicians play every Sunday at the Double Door in Chicago, just a block away from my place. This CD and their 2nd (Make Some Noise) are awesome, but almost do the band no justice. You must see them live to appreciate their amazing groove and vibe. Sadly, their run at the Double Door ended this past December but I'll be catching them every time they're back in Chicago! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't chilled, but I still enjoyed it
This is not 'The Ultimate chillout' as the subtitle suggests. The very fact that Loreena McKennitt isn't on here makes that impossible, moreover it's not really all that relaxing. It does maintain a certain mellowness throughout, but only 'Trouble' by Coldplay and 'Street Spirit' by Radiohead are the kind of thing that can really lull you before bed. Most of the songs are slow, the Micheal Woods re-mix of Delerium and Sarah McLachlan's 'Silence' and 'Hayling' by FC Kahuna are good examples, but still maintain the energy of pop-influenced House music. I was expecting Trance music like Underworld's '8 Ball' or Lost Tribe's 'Gamemaster', and the opening of 'Here with me' makes you optimistic for it (though my first thought of the song was 'Oh, the movie's starting'), but ultimately the CD is just a collection of light techno songs. Most of these songs are the smooth kind song that's nice for an evening at home looking at the lights of the city, but three are jagged pills to swallow. 'Angel (Dusted remix)' by Sarah McLachlan is the first of these, Dusted managed to suck all the emotion and power out of the first minute and a half of the song and replace it with a thin background melody, though it does improve. 'Swollen' by Bent is the second pill, Bent, if you've never heard of them, are an obscure British band with no sound unto themselves. What songs they do that aren't blatant attempts at sounding like someone famous are unstructured messes of classical instruments, bass-line thumps, and random noises ranging from car horns to jungle bird calls. 'Swollen' is a textbook example of this. The third intolerable song is a sacreligious re-mix (by Bent) of the BT masterpeice 'Shame'. While I do recommend this CD, I also recommend BT's 'Movement in Still Life' just to appreciate the original beauty of 'Shame'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ace for the casual electronic fan, or chillout beginners
Right, no surprises here, just a big ol' chunk of big names and some exclusive remixes by the chillout regulars currently cashing in. All calculated for maximum appeal, of course. Brit bird Dido has her brother offer up some strings and trip-hop with "Here With Me," and it's actually quite lovely, grandiose even - matched by Coldplay's "Trouble." FC Kahuna look beyond their electro-disco tastes for "Hayling," a beeping electronic waterfall backed by that GusGus gal Sia Furler. And whatta you know, Zero 7, Bent, and Delirium all show up again.

Now, too bad about whiny Radiohead, buy your moody pals probably like that stuff, and the Dusted mix of McLachlan's "Angel" just adds unnecessary beats. So how good is Chillout 2002? Pretty ace as a gift or for the casual electronic music fan, but dance aficionados should be aware the new remixes alone (barring "Intensify") don't warrant a cash layout if you have most the other tunes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome.
This CD is awesome. I've had it for a year and a half now, and I still listen to it all the time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sexy !!!
This is the sultriest compilation I had ever owned, this is not to chill, exactly, this is to spend a special night with your loved one,I like the fact that most of the songs have a beggining and an ending and aren't seamed one to another, that makes it easier if you like to make your own compilations, also I like the alternative versions of many very common "chill" songs like "Teardrop".
The only reason I gave it only four stars is because I'm kinda tired of compilations that have "Here with me","Destiny" and "Swollen",don't get me wrong,I thing they are beautiful songs, but with all the music out there, one would think that they would stop including these songs in every compilation!!!.
All in all,a very enjoyable CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful.
This is a GREAT compilation.
I LOVE every track of the cd except tracks 4 and 13 which I just
LIKE.
BEAUTIFUL downtempo music, and it is very nicely sequenced: no "false notes".

After a couple of average albums, Carl Cox has come up with Global, a mix that finally steps out of the long shadow cast by 1997's influential F.A.C.T. release. The British techno god has always enjoyed giving eardrums and cardiovascular systems the world over a good workout, and Global is no exception, as Cox weaves trance-drenched source material over his deliciously sadistic, hard techno beat. Simple and classic when it needs to be (Bryan Zentz's "Watch the Sun"), shamelessly minimalist when it wants to be (Ant's "Magnetic Field"), and assaultive when necessary (Cox and Christian Smith's "Dirty Bass"), Global is an adrenalized reminder that when he's on form, few produce quality, ready-made house party records like Carl Cox. --Steffan Chirazi ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good, But Not a Masterpiece (worth purchasing)
This disk is one of Cox's Best. Disclaimer to none tech and house lovers: that is what this album is, so if you don't dig it, forget it. For the rest of us, I would say there is nothing bad about this mix, however it is lacking in characteristic vinyl selection for the first several tracks, but the album does redeem itself late in the mix with awesome tracks like "Simulation." Due to the CD's late track comeback, and the fact that this is the best Cox I have heard on CD, which has not been marred by crowd noise, I'll give it 5 stars, and save the slander. The mix has grown on me after some time, and I do find myself returning to the up-beat energy offered by its' beats. This disk is good, but Not a masterpiece. Yet, still a good buy, check it out. It is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars -------------Fist Pumping Tech-House!---------------
This mix is very heavy in the tech. lots of ringing cymbols and the dirty bass that Cox is famous for from his THREE turntables. This Disc is his best release by far. it is void of the ugly repetetive tracks that seem to devalue his other stuff. Global is a little more musical. A good mix starts with good track selection. this set definately has that. i am NOT a fan of F.A.C.T,Phuture,Live vol.1, or ultimateB.A.S.E...but i do like where Cox is going Now! Get Global. The best Tech-House CD in 03.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just a matter of time
If you're like me, you *know* Carl Cox is an outstanding DJ. However, you've also been disappointed by many of his "studio" albums. In general, I've found certain tracks and certain mixes off of his earlier stuff that I've really liked, but overall I've just figured that Cox is one of those DJs who really need a packed dance floor to do their best work.
Well, I guess it was just a matter of time. This disc is a really great mix. In my opinion, this is somewhat of a new (maybe, "different") direction for CC. The sound has a housier feel to it than any of his other work that I have, and the tempo matches that feel as well. I'm big into house, so this suits me just fine ~ though I do miss the harder, acid-dipped sound that I'm used to from some of CC's other stuff that I have (F.A.C.T. 2, for example). I don't think I'd agree that this disc has a "dirty" feel to it, though it is pretty deep. Anyway, keeps my head nodding non-stop. If you've shyed away from buying new works by this man due to disappointment in the past, I'd suggest giving him another chance. My guess is you'll like what you hear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mix
This is a great Carl Cox disc, the most consistent I've heard in a while (from him). Some of his other somewhat recent releases have also been great with one exception (IMHO)--the inclusion of the noise from the crowd. For me, I've always felt that this takes away from the music. It's kind of cool to hear the crowds reaction and energy, but I don't want to hear this everytime I listen to the disc--it gets old.
Carl Cox has skills and style, both present here (as expected). He remains one of the elite American DJs. This mix does a really good job of building tension and will make you want to dance. The second half of the CD is pretty intense, almost too much so.

4-0 out of 5 stars Four stars only cuz I haven't heard much House
But...Let me say this album hits. Bangs, clangs, slurs, slips, slits, and and never lets up. No breaks between songs, but many during. Non-stop party. Fresh. This guy at best buy recommended it to me, some promoter guy. I dont know much about House music, I am new to it. But let me say, this has been a very nice intro, listening to this. So if you want that "bump, bump, bump, bump, bump" with sick breaks and changes. I highly recommend Carl Cox, Global. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bangin' CD
Bad Boy Bill has a real style in disco house music. Though i like his old music as well, but i would have to give it to him with this cd. I like it alot. he has different techniques that not too many dj's use. he knows how to mix scratch to perfection, which is why he has won alot of contests. he puts his skills to work with this cd. there is only 1 downside to this cd, the tracks tent to be a bit short.. but other than that, thats a really good cd.. get this cd, its bangin'.... i give it to BBB for doing a good job with this prettty one...

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Bangin'
One of the undisputable kings of house has done it again with a CD that fits its title. This CD is bangin'. From beginning to end, Bad Boy Bill brings a flawless house set with the usual flawless mixing, unique techniques, and superb track selection. In fact, after hearing this CD, I'm going to find Bad Boy Bill's own "Everbody" and start mixing it into my breaks set. This CD shows exactly why Bad Boy Bill is universally know within the party scene.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh my god!
Just from the 30 sec music samples you can tell this cd is bangin' By far one of his best ive heard yet. Will make you wanna drive your car way to fast, a great first buy of his. Buy it already alright

5-0 out of 5 stars The Chicago Flavor.
Bad Boy has done it agian with this great new CD. If you want to have your'e own party away from the clubs this one is a must have. This bro keeps the Chi-town flavor alive with this one. Just keep your balls tight for the next one, you just know in some way it's gonna be more dope than this one. Shibby. Also if your'e in the Chicago area ask about Ryan B or the crew with the Chi-tow flavor CPB(Chicago's Perfect Blend). Abercrombie And Fitch Mexican Dude(Edgar) Shibby.

Coming from a lifelong Chicago area Bill fan and have been grooving to his sounds for 14 years, I consider Bangin' the Box 5 to be a neccessity to every Bill fans collection,BUY THIS CD NOW!...I own over 30 Bad Boy Bill mix tapes and Cds and have recorded radio mixes of Bad Boy Bill dating back to the eighties and I can honestly say that this is one of Bill's best in the last 6 years. A lot of house albums run out of steam before they're half over, but that's not the case with Ian Pooley's pleasingly varied Since Then. In fact, the disc's first few tracks aren't house music at all. The opener, "Coracao Tambor (intro)," features driving Brazilian percussion, a throbbing keyboard, and lovely acoustic guitar flourishes, while "Venesque" is a slice of fun-filled funk. It's not until the fifth track, "Coracao Tambor," featuring Rosanna and Zelia on vocals, that the steady pulse of house, layered with Brazilian rhythms, kicks in. "Balmes" is propelled in part by an insistent finger-picked acoustic guitar pattern, while "Visions" sports a bright, sunny pop melody sung by Kirsty Hawkshaw. The CD closes on a dreamy note with "Cloud Pattern," whose acoustic piano parts hint at minimalism but are buoyed by distant drums. Since Then's range of material is well ordered and paced; rather than being just a collection of tracks, the disc is a cohesive dance album, and a fine one at that. --Fred Cisterna ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it..You Won't Regret It!
I received my copy of Ian Pooley's "Since Then", 2 days ago and have to confess, haven't wanted to listen to anything else "since then"!!! I am brazilian and am very proud to hear the influence of my music throughout the album. Ian has very tastefully created a wonderful mix of rythms and sounds that totally compliment each other throughout the entire CD. It's music that can be what YOU want it to be: romantic, chill-out, make-out or dance it out..you pick. I found my mood instantly cheer up from song 1 and by the time I got to number 9 "900 Degrees" I was blasting the music and dancing around my living room, dreaming of being at some hip, underground London club! I had never heard of Ian Pooley until I read about him on this site. Blindly I purchased this CD which instantly became one of my favorites. If you like chill-out, house, dance music with a taste of brazilian bossa nova, percussion and jazz, this CD is definitely for you!! And at the end, you even get a bonus interview with the Master DJ himself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot summer days & cool summer nights
I do not buy dance CD's. I like house, and trance, etc but do not buy CD's with them. Frankly, I barely listen to them... except for the occasional track that takes my fancy such Eclipse - Makes Me Love You or Roger Sanchez - I Never Knew. I knew the sound I wanted (Eclipse hit it) but could not get enough of it. Anyway I heard Caracao Tambor came out and I was hooked. Then I managed to hear some more songs by Ian Pooley and I was converted. So summery you can feel the heat seeping through your skin, but then so chilled you can feel the cool breeze stinging you in the middle of the night. Brilliant and it is not repetitive, he has a mixture of styles in this album. Also check out Chicane - Behind The Sun, also beautiful for summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
this cd is throughly awesome

pick it up!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'VE BEEN HOOKED "SINCE THEN"!!!
I picked up Ian Pooley's "Since Then" on one of my "compulsive browses" through the record store. GREAT FIND!!! "Since Then" had me hooked from beginning to end with its mix of ethnic rhythms, witty samples, sassy vocals and house grooves. Pooley has taken the old standard house beat and layered it with live instruments and other goodies. There's even an interview with him towards the end of the CD which gives us a better understanding of the man. Note to record companies: instead of putting those frivolous "hidden tracks" on CDs, do an interview with the artist instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Well, not actually *that* great
True, Ian Pooley serves up some infectious beats here. The Latin take is great (and is way snappier than your usual Thievery Corp lounge). But Ian doesn't move his tunes along well--he creates a nice catch, but then repeats the bejeezus out of it. "Coracao Tambor" is a great tune, but "Bay of Plenty" and the Intro are just stripped versions of it, and by the time you get to the end of the real song you might have had enough. The rest of Pooley's songs are set up the same way--you really will have gotten all of the songs in their first minute.

Sorry to those Ian Pooley fans out there, but I don't think this one was worth the cash. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Predictable Deep House...
It's like one of those mystery movies that takes you on a ride only towards a not-so-well ending. Same "A-list" producers and tracks, same mellow, slow-building style of mixing... as a DJ myself, I'm very attentive towards the whole "presentation" thing and for three talented DJ's with over 50 years of experience between them, to dish out entire tracks one at a time is an insult to the person who REALLY wants to get down. again, there are 3 DJ's, what are they doing? I understand it for an 8-10 hour dance-a-thon, for 74 minutes, I need more than this. If you've never heard any track on this cd before then you'll love it, otherwise.... "ehhh"

3-0 out of 5 stars Body & Soul, Overhyped?
Body & Soul", one of NYC's premiere parties hosted by Joe Claussell, Danny Krivit, and Francois K., has released the third installment of their Body & Soul series. At the Summerstage this year, an outdoor event held in Central Park, the surging crowds had to be turned away at different points because of overcrowding. Now with this series of mixes, they try to bring the feel of Body & Soul into the home environment for the house fan that is unable to attend this event.

It opens with a nice mellow vocal track from Yoriba, featuring the lovely voice of Marie St. James. "Closer I Get", which became a staple at Body & Soul this summer, is strictly based on the strength of Marie St. James' voice. Then it goes into a track from Hardrive 2000, which I found totally forgettable. That track trudges along with its plain vocals for a good six minutes before the mix picks up again.

"Philly's Groove" lives up to its name because this track has a groove. A trippy-jazz house track that definitely picks up the vibe on the mix and increases it a level! With EQ effects and delays on the horns, it bounces at a very dancer-friendly pace. "Equitorial" from Dubtribe Sound System is another hot afro-latin house track that those who frequent house clubs are probably familiar with. If not, it's heavy in percussions and swaying hips! Throw in a chant and you have yourself a fun song that's damn good for dancing. That's followed by Soul Ascendents' "Tribute", which has appeared on NUMEROUS compilations, but still a solid track. This is a slightly different mix than the album version, but the difference is miniscule. Another stand-out in the mix is the track by Scott Grooves, "Organ Nights", which is a down-tempo house with a nice organ solo. Despite its nine-minute running time, this track will really grow on you with it's after hours feel.   With a total of 12 tracks, there are some klunkers in the mix. Honorable mention goes out to Aril Brikha's "Groove La Chord" and Snowboy's "Casaforte" remixed by Joe Claussell. Overall, not a bad mix, but it doesn't seem to really spark to many fires underneath my soles. It is slightly above the average house mix, but never really hits the strength of the Body & Soul parties. It's a mix that you'll play when you don't want to think of something to play, but not the mix you'll necessarily play to kick the party into orbit.

Slightly disappointing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Back In The Day
Timing is everything! With books being published about the club scene (Paradise Garage) and the DJ's that made that era (Last Night A DJ saved My Life) this cd is right on time to bring the new "House" fans into the fold and make the old ones howl. With outstanding musicianship and def mixing, the jams here will make you move like never before. Almost hypnotic, it draws you in with infectious beats and sensous grooves. Building you up to a gospel explosion at cut 9, "I Shall Not Be Moved" that can only conjour up the spirit and energy of Sylvester! You'll do more than tap your toes with this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars After a powerful weekend, where better to cool off?
Body&Soul-sundays@vinyl :) Just got back from the party a few hours ago.. Bought the CD on my way out for a friend who doesn't get a chance to come to NYC. It is the bomb.. I will post a detailed review later, right now I'm too busy chilling on my couch and listening to the CD. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A reasonably good party medley CD
As far as tribute albums go, Jive Bunny has done a pretty good job recreating the sounds of ABBA with this party album.

All ABBA's best-loved tracks are featured in this non-stop medley, and surprisingly, the sound-a-likes used on the CD seem to be the original group (which, of course, they're not!).

I guess you'd have to be a real ABBA fan to appreciate this CD fully -- it isn't something I could play over and over again. Still, with their popularity still at a high, "Non Stop ABBA Party" would be a worth while addition to your CD collection if you don't want to go to the expense of purchasing one of their greatest hits albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars Red Alert (US Version)
One of the best songs Basement Jaxx has made! Although, don't get it confused with the UK version, both songs are totally different. Used in various commercials (food, drinks, clothing) and more, Red Alert is a classic by Basement Jaxx. If you want anoter good Jaxx song, check out: Do Your Thing

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool!
There is nothing more to say other than this is a cool classic clubtune you will never get tired of!!

5-0 out of 5 stars (No title)
I'm a classical musician. Quite often, with the world around me, I fall out of touch; In efforts to keep up, I try to keep on top of the music it puts out. Music is, afterall, my language, and furthermore, it's the most accurate and compelling form of communicative expression of and amongst ourselves to whatever may be called the human spirit.

I don't remember exactly how I first came into contact with Basement Jaxx, but, however it was, it was a god send, an absolute blessing.

From the beginning YoYoYo's of the radio edit of Red Alert, I was instantly addicted.

It is Basement Jaxx which keeps alive my hope for any future in this world's music, but not only this, the fact that they exist RIGHT NOW and are making such music, it makes living a very wonderful thing!

If you want really great music, the kind for which the world's musically-educated elite will forever be ashamed to admit their love for the simple reason that it is not classical, it doesn't involve any intensive studies, it puts to waste their years of training and experience, it's just there right in front of you waiting to be enjoyed, the kind that infects your very existence and haunts you day and night, you will have to seek no further than tracks 2 and 3 of this maxi-single.

If I were forced to choose a cds worth of music and would never thereafter again be able to listen to any other music, surely, without doubt, I would devote the first 15 minutes which are the first three tracks of this disc...

4-0 out of 5 stars great hidden masterpiece
cute as you may be sweetie i must say that you are wrong, many of us out there are just searching for an album like this , you call it dated and yes its true , dated in a good way though, you search around for all those pre-industrial and such type albums and eventually run out of leads , this is an awesome addition to anyones collection if theyre preference is anything close to a split second, or any other band close to that short but sweet era

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
The only reason I bought this album is because of the song "Blue."
However, the sounds of the other songs are kind of dated. "People Are Still Having Sex," is a good song and also "Alan's Got A New High-Fi."
It's definitely worth it to own the album for "Blue", but don't expect anything much better than that.

5-0 out of 5 stars would like to buy or copy this album...(latour) please help.
i allways been a big fan of this group...
i especially love their song (blue)...

hope i my goal... w'll come true... on finding this song/group.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY!
It has taken me about 5 years to find this. Ever since Basic Instinct, I have been on a mission to get "Blue" in my possession. This cd is worth it for that song alone!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wanna dance? ¿LaTour¿ of early 90s electronic dance music.

To be honest, I'm not sure why I bought LaTour's self titled debut back in 1991. I do remember liking "People Are Still Having Sex" which was a huge hit. And I recall hearing "Blue" in Basic Instinct. However, that typically wouldn't be enough to motivate a purchase. Maybe it was the interesting artwork, or perhaps the cool Smash Records logo. But whatever the motivations, purchasing this release turned out to be one of my better and more enjoyable musical decisions. For fans of electronic dance music style from the early 90s, this is a definite must have.

The release begins on a fast, harsh, almost industrial dance tone with the guitar and beat ridden "Allen's Got a New Hi-Fi" which will have you yelling and thrashing about. "People are Still Having Sex" is a funky song that is fun to dance to and has some thought provoking lyrics. This was America's introduction to LaTour, and the single had great dance floor appeal. The next song, "Involved," confirmed my love for this release. With funky beats, lush orchestration, and deep vocals that move from spoken to angst-ridden singing, "Involved" really hooks you physically and emotionally. I have to dance and scream along every time. This song was also released as a single with some cool remixes. "Cold" (also released as a single) leaves me a little flat. Despite a danceable beat, the orchestration is shallow and left me wanting more. We return to the fun with "Fantasy Soldiers." Incredibly bouncy with some great orchestration hooks, this song throws you on the dance floor and won't let go. "Amazing You" is another great dance song, but with a more positive attitude with its cool piano and upbeat lyrics that make you bounce around with a smile on your face. With an almost Front 242 "Headhunter" intro, "Laurie Monster" is funny EBM ("she's going to explode") that is very cool and has a fantastic beat and orchestration. "Psych" has a freestyle dance beat to it, however the orchestration and almost whined lyrics really don't work well; the refrain shows how much more the song could have been filled out. "Dark Sunglasses" is kind of cool - danceable and an interesting melding of spoken and sung lyrics. However the orchestration seems like it is building to something and then ends before it makes it there. "Blue" doesn't have lyrics and is an interesting techno house trip. I must admit that as a song alone I wasn't too thrilled with it. But once I saw the club scene in Basic Instinct, the song grew a life of its own. For those (like me) who bought the tape at first, it is important to note the CD contains bonus remixes of "Allen's Got..." and "People are Still..." However, buy the CD because you wore out your tape, not because of the remixes. "Allen's Got..." is overproduced, drops the guitars, and loses its angst and anger ridden edge; as a fan of industrial dance music, I was rather disappointed. "People are Still..." has some additional samples, and elements are added to make the song more rave-like, however it detracts from rather than adds to the power of the original.

I give this release a fairly strong 4 star rating. I really enjoy the music, lyrics and overall production, and it is great when I want to be dancing, active, or need a general positive attitude adjustment.

This is an album for those who love electronic dance music. Yet while every song has the propensity to make you dance, each song also takes you to a different attitude or mood. This is by no means a one-dimensional release. LaTour takes electronic dance music, and its listeners for that matter, to a fun place where flashing laser lights and the dance floor reign supreme. Get this CD, then get out of your chair and dance. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An Intelligent Kitsch Album of 80's New Wave
Finally, this album is released in the states! Various singles from Felix da Housecat got heavy rotation time on independent radio stations over the past year, most notably "Silver Screen (Shower Scene)" and "Madame Hollywood". The vocals of these two particular tracks were done in hilarious monotone by Miss Kitten, and along with the robotic beats and 80's synthesizer sounds, you are taken right back to the eighties - but in a good way! Other songs like "Harlot" and "Glitz Rock" are equally fun in a tongue-in-cheek way, while songs like "What Does It Feel Like" shun easy 80's parody and try to recreate a darker sonar world of the time period. This album is a relief from all the mind-sapping mediocre trance and two-step albums out there. "Kittenz & Thee Glitz" hearkens back to the 80's with a sense of both wry cynicism and earnest fascination, and in turn neither glorifies nor trivializes the era. What we listeners get is a great electronica that comes off beautifully on its own right, and it's a tribute to Felix da Housecat's musicianship that what should sound so old and hackneyed sounds so eerily fresh and new.

5-0 out of 5 stars the color puple, the sound of heaven
Felix da Housecat (AKA Thee Maddkatt Courtship) shines a beacon light at the end of the contemporary music tunnel with KITTENZ & THEE GLITZ. Firmly rooted in the 80's without sounding retro, nor patronizing to "the artist formerly known as his royal purpleness", Felix delivers some major "punk funk". New wave for the millenium. Beyond fashion and trend, he takes the best electronic elements of that era and crafts the sounds into a futuristic, dance friendly extravaganza. Deftly aided on vocals by Miss Kittin from DJ Hell, Melistar, and Electricboy - all help create a kind of robotic Kraftwerk-esque jewels like "Madame Hollywood", "Happy Hour", "Silver Screen (Shower Sceen)", "Harlot", and "Glitz Rock". Equally tempered by instrumental cuts "Analog City" and "Sequel 2 Sub" it all sounds fantastic, fresh, and fun. How this disk slipped by basically unnoticed is beyond belief. This is "stand-up stuff" and ushers up some major, classic grooves. Felix, you're the man with an ear for the past and an eye on the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's everything I always wanted..glitz,$$,babes,me, me,@ me!
This the greatest concept anthem to The American Dream.

I recommed it for fans of "Scarface," "Miami Vice," "GTA: Vice City," Miss Kittin, Freezepop, Gary Numan, the soundtracks of early John Carpetner Sci-Fi/Sci-Horror movies, The Clubkid Movement,or Bobby Ballistic's nutball novels "Amerikkka Part One" and "Amerikkka Part Two" (i've seen the pre-published form of the latter, it's like electroclash-crazy!).

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice sound! Good job.
Another wonderful dance/electro album with good beats and sound, what is so entertaining about this genre is that they can mix so many diffrent genre's into 1 and make it sound catchy and interesting just the same, sure there are both good and bad dance but this one causght my attention cause the sound is very inspiring. American born "Felix Da Housecat" has really made this album funky, kind of early 80's sound mixed with robotic dance rhythms. It is a very easy listening, many of the songs are slow and melodic(Control Freak), but a few quite fast too(Silver Screen). Miss Kittin also appears on a few tracks with a robotic voice. But the sound is always pleasant, but i prefer the instrumental songs. My favorite is ofcourse instrumental "Sequel2Sub" melodic and wonderful. "Magic Fly" is a remake of the 70's group Space's song if im not mistaken, good one too. This is one of many new good dance artists, i hope this trend continues.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any electroclash fan
Hey, the 80s music is coming back in a big way as illustrated by the likes of Ladytron, Miss Kittin, Felix the Housecat and others. Definitely check this CD out, especially if you are not familiar with the genre. ... Read more

This sprawling trance-techno collection could be dubbed "Ultimate House Party for Dummies," as these two hit-packed discs create a rave atmosphere that would make a metalhead seem impossibly hip among the kids. Recent outings by vegan pitchman Moby, Amber, DJ Tiesto, and bedsit pop enthusiast Daniel Bedingfield, to name but four, are radically reworked into pulsing set pieces. Mary J. Blige and Kosheen are also tweaked, but it's the seamlessness of the mixes--thanks to Spain's tech-mad DJ Sammy, a star in Europe--that makes Annual 2003 America a mainstream dance floor gem. --Kim Hughes ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.
DJ Sammy's "The Annual 2003 America" gave me the strangest sense of deja vu, and that's not a good thing. It seems that Ministry of Sound is falling into a rut and is faithfully following a tired formula: take a handful of the year's most overplayed dance hits, condense them to 3 minutes or less, add a few filler tracks, and toss in 2 or 3 really good songs, and--voila!--it's a "new" compilation. "The Annual 2003 America" sounds cheap and recycled, re-compiling tracks that already appeared on other MoS comps such as "The Annual 2002," "The Clubber's Guide to 2002," and "The Clubber's Guide to Ibiza 2002." Iio's "Rapture," Hex Hector's remix of Amber's "Yes," DB Boulevard's "Point of View," and Ian Van Dahl's "Will I" have surfaced on so many other compilations that they add nothing new or exciting on this disc. And while "The Annual America 2002" is danceable and energetic, it isn't particularly soulful or gritty, except for the house remix of Mary J. Blige's "Family Affair." If this is your first Ministry of Sound compilation, and you want to buy a disc of dance hits that have a "six-months-ago" stamp, then get this. Otherwise, pass on this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ministry Of Sound- Annual 2003 America (feat. DJ Sammy)
First of all, STOP WHINING ABOUT THE PLAYLIST. I'm talking about the other people's opinions; apparently when they buy an already 6 month old CD, they want magically delicious 1 week old songs.
Ok, so the songs are what; 6-12 months old? At least DJ Sammy did an above mediocre job mixing them. If you want to see a truly bad MOS compilation, take a look at Trance Nation 2003.

Now, the music; it has been mixed well by none other than the smashing hit DJ Sammy himself, but none of the songs are his. Oh well, most of these songs are worldwide hits so a newcomer to dance won't likely get bored by this.

The trance audiophile, however, wouldn't buy this in the first place. But if he/she did, she would be dissapointed bcz
1. Old songs
2. Whine whine, they're too mainstream, whine whine.

Big deal, they're mainstream; honestly what do YOU expect from Ministry of Sound? For the beginner of dance music, this CD is perfect, bcz it shows them the mainstream before getting into the alternative and freaky Goa Trance models.

It's a good compilation and remember,
The Annuals sum up LAST year, not last week.

4-0 out of 5 stars An overall pretty good job
Just 3 points:
-DJ sammy chose the (right titles) even if they were a little old but i guess that's what you do when you do the biggest dance hits of the year.
-He put them in the (right places)too.
-He used some (wrong mixes)ie. rapture, gotta get thru this, family affair, murder on the dance floor mixes could have been better

4-0 out of 5 stars An overall pretty good job
all i have to say is these points:
-DJ sammy chose the (right titles) even if they were a little old but i guess that's what you do when you do the biggest dance hits of the year.

-He used some (wrong mixes)ie. rapture, gotta get thru this, family affair, murder on the dance floor mixes could have been better

2-0 out of 5 stars Ugh...
It is such a shame that this CD is composed of poor songs. A few, such as Will I seem to have an uplifting beat, but generally, this CD is not all that good. As a tip, i would advise you download the songs on [local website] and see if thay are even worth your money to buy. Why pay for a CD with like 25 songs, when only 3 or so are even worth your time!? ... Read more
