A combination CD-DVD set, Global acts as a handy greatest hits collection of Paul van Dyk's wildly popular brand of shiny trance, featuring two previously unreleased tracks along with a mix of his best-known work. While he's justifiably famous as a DJ, it's really van Dyk's production, filled with shimmering electronics and relentlessly upbeat rhythms, that sets his recorded work apart from the pack. His knack for catchy hooks turns songs like "Another Way" from 2000's Out There and Back into swirling epics designed for jolting the dance floor into glowstick overdrive. Of the record's two previously unreleased tracks, "Animacion" sounds more like Van Dyk's recent work. The other, "My World," with its speedy, early-trance-house feel, may have sat in the back of Van Dyk's record crate for years. The DVD includes live footage, interview snippets, fan testimonials, and a 5.1 surround-sound mix. --Matthew Cooke ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars delicious and delightful!!!
Paul Van Dyk is a producer for the more uplifting sounds of trance and this compilation of Paul's own tunes. They have been specially remixed for this album, and the dvd is very enjoyable. The DVD that comes along with the disc is nice to watch and can be put on as background music for a party. At any rate, the music is highly enjoyable and shows people how active PVD is as a producer/music writer. So if you like PVD this is a great album to by to get some of PVD's greatest hits on one continuously mixed cd. If you prefer a mix cd, then I would suggest his Ministry of Sound release called "The Politics of Dancing" which I prefer better, hence the 4 star rating. Enjoy!! rock the vote :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Eye Candy for PvD Fans!!!
You may want to call this album Best of Best for PvD or maybe a bridge album for his next new album to be released in Fall 2003. In any rate, this album consists of music that made Paul van Dyk spanning past 10 years of his career and highlights very well about his taste in Electronic Music. As you can see the tracklisting of this cd is all well known PvD tracks. So anyone who wants to find out who PvD is and his music, this album will be able to grasp what PvD is. But for those of you who are already dying fan of PvD: like me, the cd part of this album is moderately pleasing. I'm pretty sure that most of PvD fans have all of his music and what you are probably more interested is his DVD production. PvD cd contains two tracks that weren't available to us. Animacion (too many PvD fans thought this song was Suzann but it wasn't.) is soundtrack for Zurdo (Mexican Movie) so it was only available in Mexico (I don't know anywhere else, maybe in Germany.) My World is PvD's past production that wasn't able to see the light due to his legal battles with his former label. So these two tracks seems to be the ear teaser for PvD fans. But it's the DVD part of this album that gives PvD fans the smile. This DvD was sequenced and mixed in 5.1 Dolby surround so the sound and clarity of this DvD is amazing. The order of this DvD is exactly same as Cd's tracklisting and motion videos are all footages of his fans, travels, gigs around the world. This DvD will give you insight of Paul's world that we all like to be part of. Some of the statements that were made by the fan were over exaggerated due to their hysterical excitement of the PvD's aura. Also, there are handful of parts (by fan) that will crack you up. But over all PvD's hard effort and sweat can be felt through his DvD and it will not be disappointing in terms of your expectation of this DvD production. In conclusion, new Paul van Dyk's fan will get to know him better and old PvD fans will get their eye candy...=]

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection Reached !
A MUST HAVE ! Excellent Compilation of best PaulVanDyk's best Tracks. Can't resist it, even if you've got most of the songs on it! W O R T H I T for music alone, visials ... are ok.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ausgezeichnet!
I couldn't be any more proud of PVD. It has been 10 years and some of us have been with him all the way. He's the sort of DJ that brings a sort of ecstacy (no pun intended for the Ravers) to the dancefloor. He's the king of his genre and from Berlin too!!! His presence, his trance, his hutzpah is uncomparible. The DVD on the other hand is a perfect visual of what trance and club really is and if you notice, no ones downing amphetamines! There is a better definition and with a mix of different cultures and club scenes it makes the DVD a collectable for all Trance-lovers. I live in Berlin, I've been to America, and Paul Van Dyk is universally loved. He's not going anywhere for the next ten years. Wir lieben dich, Paul. Meine Schwester willt dich zu heiraten;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!!!
Both the CD & DVD are wonderful. Not too fast paced here. 'We Are Alive' and 'How We Used To Live' are the highlights here! I love Paul's work with Saint Etienne, and I've been looking for the video for so long - and here it is! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Oakenfold Sucks, This cd is great
Oakenfold does a great job with this one. The selection is excellent, combining dnb and trance on the first cd, and ambient trance on the second. This cd compares with the skill used in Tranceport and Swordfish, and the Bedrock tracks are sick. Although i dont reccommend supporting Oakenfolds scene-destroying regime, this cd is worth owning.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Oakeys greatest mixes.
Ok, if you not into the whole drum n' bass thing on the first cd thats ok, I personal love. But it you don't, put in the second cd. This is quite possibly the best mix I've ever heard. The second is a pefect mix of GOA. It has a nice dark feel to it and it's very addictive. I guarntee you'll love this album, especialy cd 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the gems in Oakie's resume...
It's a shame Oakenfold has abandoned his acid and goa trance roots for commercialized house, pop, and generic trance. His recent slew of albums (Bunkka, Swordfish, etc.), particularly under the Perfecto label, seem to be a shameless sell-out to the American market which seems to favor overplayed anthems rather than the innovative acid beats that Oakenfold is known for in his earlier albums (Tranceport, GU 4 & 7, Fluoro, etc.).

This album is a very good testament to Oakenfold's prowess in his early years, before and during his residency at Cream. The first cd starts with tantalizing drum-n-bass that lasts well into the 2nd half of the cd. The listener is treated to soothing melodies that drift along with smooth transitions. The tracks by Omni Trio, LTJ Bukem, and LML & Richie had me hooked the first time through. The mood immediately changes with John Digweed and Nick Muir's "Forbidden Zone", kicking off the trance remainder of the set. The remaining four tracks consist of some very unique but catchy tunes that cruise along to the end of the cd...

The second cd consists of mainly acid, goa, and plain hard trance. With tunes from the likes of Taucher, Bedrock, and Astral Projection, you can't go wrong in listening to this cd time and time again.

It was very difficult for me to acquire this album as there doesn't seem to be very many in circulation (the same goes for GU 7, Fluoro, and Cream Resident). However, it is definitely worth the effort to find as it captures Oakenfold skills as a pioneering dj at its peak.

2-0 out of 5 stars Oakenfold's Failure
Paul Oakenfold, a name that will be forever associated with A-list djs. this needs to stop. i myself have been spinning for over 4 years, and i am very irritated at crummy djs being worshipped. this release is a decent release for people who don't really know anything about electronic music or djing. the mixing is less than good, especially on cd 2, where it is downright horrible. the tracks are spun in too fast or not even at all. the selection is alright, but nothing too exciting. except for the drum n' bass tracks, the music is not intelligent in any way, and i usually like acid and goa. i have to say that the only good release from oakey is the New York GU, where the mixing is still weak, but the track selection is absolutely amazing. save yourself the money and get that one instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alrighty Then...
I liked this CD a lot. I liked the Drum-n-Bass tracks on the first CD, mixed with the world-flavor and ambient-type acoustics. The transition into that Olive track is amazing. I skipped back to that several times.

As good as this CD is, I don't think it compares to other Oakenfold albums, like Tranceport, or Perfecto Presents Another World. If you don't already have those, I would recommend getting those, prior to this album. ... Read more

Bouncy and airy, this soulful epic from Dimitri from Paris usurps the bubbly core of disco and imbues it with a propulsive, addictive energy. A talented DJ as well as a sharp-eared and fearless translator of faux-sophisticate, Martin Denny-style exotica-jazz, Dimitri has a natural affinity to latch onto the kitsch, which has always given an appealing breeziness to his mixes. This disc ups the ante, both on that level and also in terms of plain old danceability. Most impressive of all, this disc manages to avoid sounding like a predictable rehash or, worse, yet another nod to mindless retro culture. Bringing the funk in unabashed fashion on such tracks as the Originals' "Down to Love Town" or falling through the gauzy melodies of La Pregunta's "Shangri-La," Dimitri displays an affinity for the genre that is both focused and informed. While he gives the songs proper breathing room, his sampling technique produces an intensely modern spin when necessary. Mixing up Stetasonic's "Talking All That Jazz," Dimitri twiddles and dips the EQ with ruthless energy, giving the song a breakbeat-like, sample-laden momentum. As any DJ ripped straight from Studio 54 would know, Dimitri's ancient vinyl carries a time-tested vibe that even the most modern of present-day ravers can and should recognize as a kindred spirit. --Matthew Cooke ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Stay The Night
Dimitri From Paris has done it again, with his 2000 album A NIGHT AT THE PLAYBOY MANSION. The setting is that of disco, with some great beats and jams that will set the mood for you to get ready to party, or if you just need to chill. There's the perfect balance between uptempo disco anthems, and smooth jams. Among highlights include Bah Samba's "Reach Inside", Originals' "Down To Love Town (Dim's Secret Re-Edit", "Shangri-La (Dim's Mansion Anthem Re-Edit" by La Pregunta, "Motivation" by Atmosphere, "Sweet Music" by Terry Hunter and "Wonderful Person" by Black Masses. Overall the cd is a nice compilation that will get you in the mood, really worthwhile for fans of his groundbreaking SACREBLEU, or house fans in general, this one's for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars classy house music
This is probably what they would play at Studio 54 if it had opened its doors this year. House, funk, jazz and disco all mixed up in one cd. You never know what to expect from these french guys, first it was Air, following their smash Moon Safari with the haunting and brilliant soundtrack to Sophia Coppola's new movie, now Dimitri makes the coolest disco record ever, so what can we expect from Daft Punk? Maybe a french-house Opera? Well, we'll have to wait and see. Back at the Playboy Mansion, the highlights are the new tracks: " The Groove EP", "Talkin' all that jazz"( awesome bass line in the begining) and "Outro lugar" is also great, to name a few. "Found a Cure" is also really nice remixed, very worth listening. Some may disagree, but in my opinion this is Dimitri finest work to date. I just hope Astralwerks puts more titles out in the Respect is Burning Collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Club Mixes.
Also, a great Playboy Mag cover from the 70's. This production takes classic disco and retro club tunes and puts a Dimitri from Parh-ree stamp on them. Stetasonic gets juiced, the Originals gets UP to Love Town and Ashford/Simpson do not need the cure to Dim's Blue Lounge re-edit. Does it move? Do I really have to tell you? Party, baby!

5-0 out of 5 stars If You're Looking For The Funk...
This is the funkiest, bounciest, wildest most fun record I have. I'll sum it all up with a brief anecdote...My friends came over my house after school the other day to do a report. None of us are really big fans of dance or disco music, but for some strange reason, I then thought about how I liked this album when my older brother used to listen to it, so I decided to put it on while we were working. I didn't know what they'd think of it. I thought at least they'd get a laugh out of it, as this album is like nothing they had ever heard. My presuppositions couldn't have been more off. After about two minutes into the first track, we completely abandoned our report and just danced around the room like freaks for the duration of the 70 minute disco-funk parade. It's seriously that entrancing. Never put this on if you're trying to get work done. You really won't be able to do a thing but groove. For all other moments in your day though, I highly recommend this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disco with Soul
People who have a bad image of disco usually think of such cheese as Ring My Bell. But there is a lot of disco that came straight out of Philadelphia soul, the Gamble & Huff school and the like. Dimitri from Paris perfectly captures this more soulful vein of disco on this perfect mix. This disc is a great favourite of mine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 years in 3 CDs - Epic tyune after epic tyune
A friend let me borrow these discs. They are, without a doubt, the best single source the best tunes of the last 4-5 years. You'll recognize so many of these tunes from the great Oakenfold mixes of '99, Van Dyk's essential mixes and Tiesto's studio mixes. These tracks really are "greatest hits" - I think there were only a handful of tunes on the entire set that I didn't recognize, and I'm not some sort of obsessive trance junkie that's been into it for years and years.

Jules mixes nicely and orders the tracks in a fresh, new way that really revives some of these tunes. While spontaneous live mixes will always have that sense of razor's-edge spontaneity, it's great to have all these tunes in one place.

While I'd still advise getting the original mixes on which these tracks appeared, if you're a little burned out on your older Oakey/Dyk/Tiesto/whoever, definitely pick these up. Especially if you can "borrow" them from a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must buy this!
This is definitely the best trance collection I own, and if you don't own it, then that MUST change. Seriously. Buy this or you will live to regret it. Anyway. If you want some quick advice then here are 3 reasons for buying this 3-cd set:

(CD1) System F - Out Of The Blue
(CD2) Kristine Blond - Love Shy
(CD3) Energy 52 - Café Del Mar

Those are clearly the 3 standout tracks throughout the whole collection, even though there are loads more (Pulp Victim - The World; Matt Darey & Marcella Woods - Liberation / Beautiful; Chicane - Saltwater; Serial Diva - Pearl River; Lustral - Everyime...). The mixing is very good and all the selections except for about one or two (a couple weak spots towards the end of CD1), but other than that, this 3-cd box set is PERFECT! I recommend it for anyone, trance fan or not. ... Read more

Quiet, yet diligent progressive house DJ Chris Fortier has assembled a groovy, first-class progressive trance set. Hot, steamy, and with the distinct ghost of dub hanging over it (you won't hear actual riddims, but you'll feel the influence of them), Fortier's Bedrock sounds like a lazy Ibizan beach, surf crashing on the shore, as swimsuits over tanned skin dance and revel at sunset. Universal Agents set the tone with their reefer-coated waves, and the dirty gyrations of Harris's "Touched by Dub" underscore the set's sheer sexiness. Meanwhile, Deep C and Randall Jones evoke Underworld-style moodiness with "The One," and by the time Angel Moraes has stepped it up a notch higher for the grinding "Turn It Up," Fortier himself comes along to close with the sugar-throb trance of "Losing Wait." Fortier's produced a trance-tastic winner here, and Bedrock is fast shaping up to be the dance compilation label that matches Global Underground for quality. --Steffan Chirazi ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Too smooth
In terms of technique Chris Fortier's skills are starting to approach artists like Sasha and John Digweed. To light: I bought this CD and popped the first disk in, then drove out to get some lunch. I wasn't paying close attention but after a while it occured to me that the first track was pretty long. I glanced at my CD player and *surprise* it was already on track 3.

Great minimal house blending into tribal beats and deep progressive trance. If you can't get a dj for your after-hours party these disks will work instead.

Smooth, smooth, smooth. :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Done !
Honestly one of the better cd sets to come about. Mr. Fortier does a wonderful job not only in track selection but in the thoughfulness of timing and placement. I have been listening and playing for years now and have been keeping up with new releases from the various "big" labels. Sadly to say I have been disapointed with a lot of their recent releases. Chris does a wonderful job from start to finish. It comes through in his work that he put (again) a lot of thought into setting up the mix and executing it. Lets see some more of that from you other artists out there! Thankfully there are people that still understand that if you want your cd to stay in someones deck it takes a little more longevity of thought than just some big tracks and name. All of you who have experienced cds like Renaissance (Sasha, Digweed) - or Digweed's Bedrock etc... know what I mean. A must for people who aren't interested in investing 15 or 20 in a disc and listening to it a couple of times and then forgeting it. Thank you for a great set Bedrock!

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal - blew me away!
Chris Fortier took it to a higher level on this CD! - It gets better with every listen. This is as smooth as I've heard, transitions are seamless, groove is phenomenal! A keeper.

5-0 out of 5 stars spectacular
Brilliant from start to finish.
Sheer sonic genius.
Find this. It's seamless, it's flawless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray for the USA!...
I've heard so many comps lately, and so many have a double portion of cheeze added. Not so with this one. Chris has set a deep groove from cd 1 track one and has built slowly, methodically and brilliantly until the atmosphere explodes with energy. The track selection is excellent for this type of album; sometimes tribal, sometimes housey, and definitely full of trance foundations: this compilation has it all! I had, hitherto now, really relied on the DJs from the United Kingdom for my musical enjoyment, and with the exceptions of Deep Dish and Danny Tenaglia, I have largely given US DJs a pass. This Bedrock outing has changed that, Chris has set the bar high and delivered with a musical journey that oozes [smooth]overtures flowing over groovy baselines that are only anchored by the steady beat that is called bedrock. This one's a keeper. Enjoy!! rock the vote;} ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's OK.
All the songs are good, but I especially like "It Is A Fine Day" by Miss Jane. I am also a fan of DJ Encore and Engelina, Ian Van Dahl, Darude, Amber, Madonna, Iio, and Linkin Park. I strongly recomend the album "Intuition" by DJ Encore and Engelina. That is my favorite CD of all time. My favorite song of all time is "Castles In The Sky" by Ian Van Dahl.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid
This is a very solid trance album for people used to European Club music. I myself fell in love with Trance when I lived in Madrid and this is the first US album that I picked up that can match with the imported Ministry of Sound CDs that I have. If you are a fan of Clubbers Guide to 2002 or Ibiza National, this is a good CD that will not break the bank.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I like most trance, but this CD was full of uninteresting and banal songs. I couldn't pick one out from the other as sticking out in my mind except for "Children" and "Insomnia", which I had heard before on other CDs. Save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
"Show Me Love" was a great hit. I remember it being played in heavy rotation back in '93. I just love that techno dance beat. And the lyrics are so great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!!!!
Robin's such a talented and beautiful lady with an incredible voice! This album definately shows that. She's awesome. I love her voice and spirit and she shall not be ignored. Her music really brightens up my life, especially "brighter day." She truly gives us all a 'brighter day' when listening to that song! Her voice takes me higher and higher! She's a true idol to me cuz she doesn't let anything stop her! She has the most powerful voice in the world! She's one of the most hard-working and committed artists in dance music. I am still fascinated by her voice. Not many other singers can sing better than her. By listening to her music, I always find the peace, love, joy and happiness I need. A big thanks to Robin for being such a diva and a soul sister to us all!
I really hope the world sees and hears her by her music and I hope she continues to spread the message of love and peace. Buy this now if you don't already own it or buy it as a gift for friend who doesn't already have it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Back Then!
When this diva's debut song " Show Me Love" hit the clubs back in the early 90s, it had everybody on the floor in a trance. I was there! She brung back that gusty belting singing in house music that was missing for a good while. Her voice is incredible. She deserves better reviews than what I saw previous to this review. She deserves more credit in the House Music Divadom. Her 2nd CD wasnt as good but better than most and didn't get much attention. It would be on hit if she made some new work? Do u hear me Robin??? I hope u read this, u diva u!!! I guess she just got frustrated with the fickle industry and went back to a church in New York, Chicago, L.A. or somewhere "sanging" her heart out for the Lord like so many other uncelebrated house divas. Peace!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, Likable
I like this album, it could have had more cool techno. She scored big hits with the similar sounding cool techno songs "Love for Love" and "Shnow Me Love". Her vocals are consistantly pleasing throughout the album. This album is good for those who like an even mix of R&B and Dance songs...

3-0 out of 5 stars DECENT !!!
A good debut from Robin S. What ruins this cd are the very overproduced generic [although lovely vocals]R&B/ Soul ballards . The singles are the standout tracks . DEFINATELY purcase her second 1997 CD " From Now On" first ! SIGNED MUSIC FAN. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars most groundbreaking top 10 hit ever..
in 1989, MARRS released Pump Up The Volume, which became a massive hit around the world. It was also the first US / UK top 10 hit to be composed entirely of samples.
Many music writers consider that PUTV inalterably changed the face of pop music. Consider the fact that Rick Astley was one of the biggest artists in the world in 1989, and you will begin to appreciate the impact of this great single.
It is truly a dance music classic, as much a keynote in the history of dance music as Blue Monday by New Order or Autobahn by Kraftwerk.
I am always pleased to see the reactions of first time listeners to this song, most of whom find it difficult to believe that this was released in 1989, not 1999 or even more recently.

The only negative thing I can say about this song is that it sort of paved the way for people like will smith to sample old songs to death without any originality at all, something MARRS definitely have not done with their masterpiece.

5-0 out of 5 stars essential
Perhaps the most influential one-hit wonder ever. Regardless of your musical tastes, this CD is essential in understanding the evolution of modern music. Includes a very good b-side to boot!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This CD has four different versions of Pump up the Volume, plus a song that would be better off never having existed in first place.

So, basically, it's a matter of whether you like Pump up the Volume or not. To me, this is one of the greatest tecnho/dance songs ever. I just can't get tired of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An OBSCURE-Disk Approved Release
M/A/R/R/S was a one-off collaboration between members of two UK experimental pop hotshots -- A.R. Kane (Rough Trade) and Colourbox (4AD). (The band's name represents the initials of its members.) "Pump Up The Volume" was, at its heart, a tape-collage of various other pioneering dance hits of the era: it liberally sampled likeminded tracks by Stock/Aitken/Waterman and Coldcut, stirring up mild controversy in the process. The track (a substantial success in the US as well) has since come to prominence as a genre-defining movie-soundtrack favorite, most recently in the dark '80s satire "American Psycho."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Greatest Hits Collection!
BT is one of the most prolific electronic DJs/producers of the 1990s, and therefore, it is befitting that his "Greatest hits" package will be a massive 2 CD collection containing early singles as well as many of his best remixes.
Many people who bought his remix album released last year "R&R" may think it is unnecessary to buy this collection, since many of the tracks are the same. However, the big bonus here is that on CD1, the versions that are collected are the original single and radio versions of the songs, that are previously unavailable unless you bought the vinyl DJ singles.
CD1 is like a time capsule, starting with early BT tracks like "The Moment of truth", "Loving you more" and "Relativity", and progressing on to his #1 collaboration with Tori Amos, 1995's dance classic "Blue Skies", the surreal "Remember" from "ESCM", and ending with "Never Gonna Come Back Down", "Dreaming" and "Giving Up The Ghost" from his last studio full-length "Movement in Still Life".
CD2 is a continuous mix (this being an "Essential Selection" release), featuring many of BT's remixes over the years. "Running around town" by Billy Ray Martin, "Stranded" by Deep Dish and "Anomaly: Calling Your Name" by Libra, are all here. The highlight of this disc is, of course, near the end, with the exclusive mix of Madonna's "Drowned World/Substitute for Love", which adds a touch of class, a rousing version of the Crystal Method's "Keep Hope Alive", and ending with BT cohort DJ Rap's "Bad Girl" and Richard Butler's Euro-trancey "Shineaway".
Overall, this is a great album that comes at exactly the right time. Electronic music is hitting the mainstream, and BT, with production work for N Sync and Britney Spears among others, is at the forefront of this movement. This album showcases all his best works through the past decade, and lets the casual listener know that he is much more than a pop producer, but also an extraordinary turntable genius and keyboard whiz.
Here's to another 10 years in your life, Brian! Cheers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Give me a 10!
This has to be a very exclusive release to the US since it was released by Rhino Records and not BT's parent records in the US, Nettwerk. You won't even find this listed on BT's official website discography.

Nontheless, you'll find the various songs from Bt's 10-year career in a 2-CD set. CD1 featues his own compositions and CD2 are the remixes he was commissioned to do for other great artists.

I first got myself aquainted to his music on the deliciously penned Tori Amos collaboration Blue Skies. Tori's cold haunting voice matched Bt's self-styled techo-electronic sounds almost perfectly. You'll find it here on CD1, no doubt, for it represents one of BT's best triumphs. You also find such gems like his earliest works Moment of Truth and Relativity. You would realize how progressive BT has gotten on his later albums especially when he tried experimenting with electronic fusion with hip-hop/rap on Movement in Still Life. Dreaming, Giving Up The Ghost and Never Gonna Come Back Down truly represents this great leap forward. What's best, you'll get all the radio edits and remix single that were otherwise only available on vinyls or promo CDs.

On CD2, BT showcases his skills as a remixer which, by far, is his most accomplished work done. Remixing for The Crystal Method to Billy Ray Martin and Madonna, the remix of Drowned World for the latter is one of his best remixes for the 90's. It simply added a multi-dimension to a song that was dark and brooding. A great ommission here would have to be his splendid remix of Sarah McLachlan's I Love You which literally transformed the broadway style ballad to a stomping dancefloor cut.

If you just got on BT, this is is the best $20 to spend on without getting his whole collection. I recommend his new CD Emotional Technology too.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yick!
I'm sorry but after having heard so much about him, I had a go and checked this CD out. Terrible. The songs are lame, and there is nothing here that jumps out and grabs me. I was expecting a lot more. He must have friends in high places because talent alone didn't get him where he is today.

5-0 out of 5 stars BT at his BEST
This 2 disc set is a must have for any BT fan! From club house to trance beats, this set covers it all! Madonna 'Drowned World/Substitute for Love' remix is the best!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, though dated at some points
As opposed to the case with most greatest hits compilations, this one sadly shows how the early sound of the electronica/dance genre (which was influenced heavily by BT's contributions) sounds dated when we are about to enter 2004. On the flip side, much in the same way as those of us born in the seventies now look back at the eighties with a sense of "that was the music we went through High School with" I can see a lot of younger people enjoying this music in 10-15 years time, as a retrospective into their middle school years.

This album presents a compilation of hits spanning from 1993 until 2002 (when it was issued) of Brian Transeau (a.k.a. BT), one of the masterminds behind the electronica/dance movement of the past decade, considered by many to be "bigger" than the very own Paul Oakenfold (I subscribe to that view, by the way...) '10 Years in the Life' gives a clear idea of how the sound of BT evolved through time, with a more techno/dance type of sound in the first half of the first disc (and in general in the first five years covered by the compilation), morphing into a more ambient/trancey sound toward the end of it (which closely match the most recent five years), when he takes a plunge into some originals and some remixes extracted from the great ESCM album. As the first disc closes, we get a feel for BT's scoring abilities, with "Believer" (from the movie "Go") and "The Revolution" (from "Tomb Raider" part I).

Disc 2, for a change, presents a continuous mix bundled with remixes that BT did of other artists' work (and a couple of his own crop) between 1995 and 1999, with Madonna's "Drowned World/Substitute For Love" and an almost unrecognizable (though very powerful) remix of Crystal Method's "Keep Hope Alive" as the high points. In general, I prefer the first disc by far, since it sounds less dated and sticks more with the more trancey music/remixes by BT that I learned to love.

As for me, though I didn't grow up to this music (not in the sense of going to school listening to it), I found more than one spot in the compilation that made me feel more alive than ever, as if being reborn. Hope it gives you the same feeling when you spin it... keep a young spirit! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars We are the superior beings!
The song "Doctorin' the Tradis" by The Timelords(aka The JAMs aka The KLF) combines the music of Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll Part 2" with the TV theme of the BBC's Dr. Who. The song was a Number One hit in the U.K., but only managed to reach #66 on the U.S. charts. There are four mixes of the song here. The first one is the original 7 inch single version. The second one is the 12 inch dance remix version. The third one guest stars Gary Glitter himself. And the fourth version is an instrumental remix. One other song is included, which is "What Time is Love?". This song was a Top Five hit in the U.K., but stalled at #57 on the U.S. charts. "Doctorin' the Tardis" is a great fun song, especially if you are a Dr. Who fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great music, lousy CD
I remember being in a late 80s party when suddenly this house version of the Doctor Who theme began to play. Being only 8 or 9, the dalek voices scared the heck out of me, and I spent the duration of the song hiding behind my father's leg (I was *very* little..) This EP is a nice compilation of the single's primary mixes, but unfortunately the titles are a little misleading: Doctorin' The TARDIS (Instrumental) is in fact Doctorin' The TARDIS (Minimal), and Gary Joins The JAMS is really Gary In The TARDIS.. but then, the KLF released so many remixes of this 1988 No.1 that it's hardly surprising they got confused. Nice to have the 12" and the 7" versions together, though - a major flaw in the original release - but a pity they didn't include the dance mix from the original CD..

5-0 out of 5 stars Special CD5 recommended for Who fans
OK, there was the group Dalek I Love You, which I haven't heard yet, but it took the Timelords, a.k.a. the Kopyright Liberation Front, a.k.a. the Jams short for Justified Ancients of MuuMuu (taken from Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea's The Illuminatus Trilogy, to take the 1980 version of the Doctor Who theme, incorporate harder drums, a rhythm taken from Gary Glitter's "Rock And Roll Part 2," and some Dalek dialogue taken from the 1975 story Genesis Of The Daleks, where they tell their creator Davros, "We obey no one. We are the superior beings!" before turning him into toast. This single went straight to the top of the UK charts in 1988. Also included in the song is the wheezing and grinding sound of the TARDIS, courtesy of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. A wailing siren predominating in parts of the song is clearly meant to be from the Jams' police car, named Ford Timelord. This is the album version of "Doctorin' The TARDIS."

The 12" mix clocks in at 8:11 and includes extended instrumentation of both the theme, and Dalek dialogue.
The Daleks' "Exterminate" and "We obey no-one. We are the superior beings" get the rap and scratch treatment. Even Davros, the creator of the Daleks, can be heard, screaming "YOU WILL OBEY ME!" to which the Daleks said "We obey no one."

Also included here is the original version of the KLF's instrumental "What Time Is Love," which sounds like an early 90's techno number, and with keyboards sounding like Lords Of Acid's "Take Control" and sans the heavy techno beats.

The next is another album cut. "Gary In The TARDIS" is like the previous number, except with Gary Glitter vocals, with chants for Gary, and Gary asking, "Well, did you miss me? (YEAH!) Do you love me? (YEAH!) Do you want to touch me? (YEAH YEAH YEAH!)" References to three of his songs are included, one being "the leader of the gang" and "do you want to touch me" "rock and roll" and both are mixed in with mention of the TARDIS. The Dalek still says his lines from Genesis.

The instrumental of "Doctorin' The TARDIS" is different from the single and extended versions. It focuses more on the theme music and the windy sound effects and computerized bleeps.

Mostly recommended for fans of the original Jams album and for Dr. Who fans who wanted to hear the extended version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doctorin' The Tardis
Doctorin' The Tardis

This cd is so cool.

When I first saw the music video back in 1988 I said to myself this needs to be on LP and now it is on a cd which sounds much better than the LP. Jams, KLF, and The Timelords are my favourite artists and/or rock bands.

Tip: Play this on a Bose Wave Radio w/ CD and it sounds much better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Doctor Who fans--our favorite rendition!
This is really several versions of the same song, with one additional track that sounds like chase music added on.

As a Doctor Who fan, I wanted to own the music that I've heard at the conventions, and the low price on this CD was enough to get me to buy it. The tremendous mixing of Doctor Who theme music, voice selections from the Daleks, and a great rock and roll hit make this one of the most amazing themes ever recorded, and it captures the high-speed, rollicking sense of adventure from vintage 70's Doctor Who. Great sound, a great sense of nostalgia, and great music for Who parties, conventions, or driving through Chicago on Thanksgiving Day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mark Farina is the MAN
Yet again, Mark Farina delivers the goods. He has distinguished himself as an artist with impeccable taste as far as song selection goes (as fans of either Mushroom Jazz or Mushroom Jazz 2 will attest) as well as flawless mixing skills. Fans of United DJs of America #9 will love San Francisco Sessions... in fact, I think it is an even better mix than UDJA9. Farina fans should also look out for (the relatively rare release) from Imperial Dub Records that features choice tracks by Dubtribe Sound System and Dr. Dub (you might know him better as, oh... Doc Martin!) mixed beautifully by Om Records' favorite son Mark Farina. And on that note, a plug for Om Records... you can't go wrong with an Om release! Particularly worthy of mention/purchase are the Sounds of Om house release, Om Lounge, and Deeper Concentration. Whether you're a fan of groovin house or innovative jungle (Ming + FS' impressive release "Hell's Kitchen"), Om is a solid label with phat offerings, not the least of which is Mark Farina's San Francisco Sessions.

5-0 out of 5 stars love it
You've gotta love this cd, and mark farina...It took a few times to listen to before i could truly appreciate it. Once you are familiar with the cd, it grows on you!...His style of house is very original..very jazzy, funky..if you are looking for something with hard dance beats, then this is probably not for you, and i would advise listening before you buy...but as i said, it will grow on you...tracks 3 & 5 are some of the best. I hope you enjoy mark farina's original style of house as much as i do.

5-0 out of 5 stars In This House
Mark Farina created a masterpiece with this mix. While all house-heads are likely to love it, others who have not been exposed to house would love it to0. There is simply nothing to dislike here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compared to Air Farina...
...and experiencing Mr. Farina live... this album ranks 4 stars, 5+ being Air Farina & "live". Damned good CD, but I still prefer Air Farina. This man is a true prodigy, he never dissapoints.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best! Farina has never been better...
This CD was realeased around five years ago and still stands as one of the best mixed house cds ever. It is completely seamless, in fact if you set it to loop continusly, the beginning and the end mixes perfectly. This disc rarely leaves my player. It is only equaled by French Sessions Vol. 1 & Vol. 3. This cd really shows the skill and creativity of the Farina. He adds beautiful vocal samples from one of the tracks, throughout the mix, this small addition ties the whole disc together. Farina is truly a madman with a sampler. Buy this disc, support great artists and indie labels. ... Read more

DJs Sasha and Digweed are known throughout the world for their sublime mixes and clever choice of material popularized by their Northern Exposure CD series. Beyond the interminable techno and house of their contemporaries, S&D have found some magic key with which they make real music out of monotonous dance-floor detritus. Their mixes breathe, travel, and reflect, making armchair listening a resplendent journey in the head. Those of us who would rather endure an evening with Sugar Ray than get caught in some ear-shattering dance dungeon find solace in the mercurial, near shamanic sounds of S&D. But can solo Sasha match the muse? Xpander follows the S&D formula to a T, leaving you wondering who is the genie and who is the master in that partnership. Almost subliminally, the Sasha tracks "Xpander," "Belfunk," "Rabbitweed," and "Baja" unwind as much in the air as in your head. The beat, of course, is omnipotent, but Sasha adds touches of glowing ambient, experimental house, soundtrack surrealism, and trippy, Warpish techno. Remember that scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey where our hero, Dave, travels light years in a single moment, only to find himself looking at his own aged body eating eggs? Xpander is the eerie modern soundtrack to a heightened aging process, one where the mind gets lost in the void while the body either shuts down or dances. --Ken Micallef ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent Piece
I agree with a lot of people that this sets a high standard for Sasha and that it is indeed an excellent piece.
The only thing that bothers me about this CD is that it's not mixed. Other than that I have no complaints.
Xpander, a track on the CD is very nice and it's tempo is decently fast and up beat.
Belfunk is also a nice track, starting out slow and then going into a frenzy bass and electronic synths playing throughout the song.
Rabbitweed, the most interesting and probably the most complex songs on the CD, meant something for raves and such, I really like this song.
Baja, the last track and a nice ender for the CD, soft and mellow, sorta a cool down I suppose. Kinda dreamy and with some bass here and there.
All and all this is an important CD to own if you like Sasha's work or if not it might be a nice starter into the world of trance.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a DJ
Well, it seems that Sasha had decided to go further than just DJing and mixing and decided to start produing too. After listening to this EP, I've reached the same conclusion that I've reached when I've heard "Northern Exposure" for the first time. This guy is more than just a DJ - he's an artist.

Except the radio cut for "XPander", all of the tracks are very long (10 minutes and up) and yet do not find them boring. Instead, they really do what they were meant to do : put you in a trance. All the tracks are absolutly fantastic, and I don't think you'll find a respectable trance collection CD that doesn't have one track from this EP.

XPander has the best potential to be a radio hit, but my favorite track on this EP is "Bellfunk". Sasha is not afraid to put stop to the beats in this track, and so you get 2 minutes of a dreamy chillout sound in a middle of a really poundy track. "Rabbitweed" is a fine tune too, and Baja is a bit different, starting slowly and climbing up.

I believe that after this EP Sasha will become a very wanted person in the production studios as he is on the clubs. You should really try this EP and experience a sophisticated, non cheesy trance and progressive house sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Electronic Music
Xpander is Sasha's defining moment. He had already proven that he was a phenomenal DJ with his work with John Digweed, first on the genre defining Renaissance Mix Album, and subsequently on their amazing Northern Exposure releases. This release solidified him as superb producer, and as the leader of the trance movement of the late 90's and progressive movement of the new millenium. This is perhaps the perfect starting piece for someone just starting out with the genre. It's affordable, and you are given four timeless gems of modern electronic music. I especially enjoy "Baja" with it's chillingly gorgeous chanting and trippy bassline. An abosolutely essential purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great Xpander
Can there be any doubt that Xpander is the
greatest "trance" tune of all time?
No, there can be no doubt about this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling!
I know this review is a little late, but Xpander still sounds fresh today. I purchased this after I heard the Belfunk track on Sasha & Digweed's "Northern Exposure" and wanted the stand alone track. What a surprise. Xpander is a dancefloor assault composition. Track 1, Xpander (Edit) is just that...an edit. Proceed to the full version. The intro makes my hair stand on end. Also worthy of mention is Rabbitweed. Sasha departs from his traditional 4 on the floor rhythm and ventures into a MidEastern influenced rhythm and melody. After a few minutes into the song, a haunting melody forms over a metronome tick in the background. Then, Sasha unleashes a sick, psychodelic wall of sound. Great song. I have really enjoyed his solo material. Cheers! ... Read more

great hard mix, has that post-4 am feel. Not many vocals, but we like it that way. :-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Rivera is a dance machine...
I don't know how he does it, but Robbie Rivera manages to keep over an hour's worth of music driving and interesting without much vocal at all. His progressive stuff is funky, hard and unique all at once. I'm a big vocal dance music fan, so for him to keep me coming back for yet another CD of his is incredible. 4-0 out of 5 stars ooooooo I loooove it!
I was chatting with a guy on the internet and he suggested this CD among some others. He was a Paradise Garage regular so I knew he knew. What can I say "Turn on the Lights" is my jam! I just love how he made such an eclectic group of songs work on this compilation. I just sing and dance and sing and dance...ughhh I get goosebumps just thinking about it!

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS ANOTHER GEM
This CD brings back memories of yesteryear when NYC was clubland late 70's early 80's. Thanks Danny for mixing "Turn On The Lights" I have been looking for that album for the past decade and could not find it until I heard this CD and bought it right than and there. Great CD for those who want to go bakc in time when clubs were clubs NYC style :-) THis is a CD worth buying.

4-0 out of 5 stars 30 year cycles... the 70's in all its glory
This is the best work put out to date by 'ole Danny Rock (as he was known in his "Roxy" days), he does some strenous elimination from 30 years of record collecting... I applaud him for a job well done, it's very hard to pick the best from the best! It makes for great "edu-tainment" for us younger cats and the older ones who let it pass 'em by alike... some tunes more known and some wonderfully obscure really makes this more of a "body & soul" experience than all the volumes by that name put together. Please keep releasing more stuff like this!

Its all about big drums and rhythm and hundreds of sweaty people screaming and stomping to the unstoppable beat. You can't deny this price either! 2 CDs! so, get it. If you like obscure funky dance tunes this is for you! ... Read more
