With 'Lovely', you can't help but reminisce about those skating rink moments, skating to the upbeat, fast freestyle music. The production is really indicative of its time, the freestyle beats that are dated now, but were cool back then. There are some great gems on this album "I Feel For You", "Big Love", and her beautiful ballads "Never the One" and "You are the One." The more somber tune "I Never Thought Love Would Break My Heart" is superb, too...with the combination of piano and Jocelyn's vocal stylings- you cannot go wrong! My only complaint is the last reprise track- what was the point of that?? It was like 43 seconds of uselessness. This is a nice collector's item- plus there's some great photos and lyrics inside the cover. When I meet the diva herself, my copy's getting signed!

However, what hurts this album are the arrangements. "Que te Vas" is probably the most innovative arrangement on here, considering it's one of the only tracks on the album that received any playtime on Latin radio stations. I expected something better from George Lamond in his Salsa crossover. Like I said earlier, he has a superb singing ability. What he needs to do is get some more aggressive arrangements if wishes to top some of his fellow contemporaries. The happy, sappy arrangements on this album have a dragging effect. And if you're going to re-make a song, be a little more gender-neutral next time when you make your choice. "Si tu No Estas" probably drove millions of women crazy because it's a Menudo song. But of course you're going to get under the skin of men like me who really didn't dig Menudo back then - even though some of us respect Ricky Martin's musical contributions today. People are going to gwack at the subtle sexism underlying my remarks, but I'm not holding them back. You have to appeal to everyone in an industry like Salsa, otherwise you will suffer the fate of others who have had unsuccesful cross-overs. It's a given you're not going to make everyone happy when you record an album. You'll often have people screaming "Yuck, this stuff reaks of salsa romance, yadda, yadda, yadda...not real salsa..yadda..yadda." I am a big fan of today's Salsa as much as the Old School stuff. But, George Lamond can do better than this. I know you can! Deliver on your next album.

The second track, "Totally Miss You" is quite good. Most of the rest is very uninspiring indeed: "House of Silence '99" is just one of many examples of poor tracks. Rather gratuitously, the band members bear uncanny resemblances to nightclub bouncers.

"We can't go wrong" was a smash hit ballad for the group and it peaked at #2. However, Michelle Valentine had taken over the lead vocals after Angel Sabater left the group and she relishes the lead on the funky "Wishing on a star". Their version of the song was actually a bigger hit than the original by ROSE ROYCE and it fit the group really well. "My heart skips a beat" and "Inside outside" are essential 80's dance and freestyle and show why the group was a stay on the dance charts. A thumping remake of the TEENA MARIE classic "I need your lovin'" is also featured as the girls pay tribute to LADY T! This package sums up their collection really well and any fan of 80's/early 90's dance and freestyle will find this rewarding.

Lil' Suzy There are many other good ones but those are the main ones that I can remember and to the people who are just now listening to this old school freestyle these songs are from the 80's mostly. But they still are the best freestyle.
All of the freestyles have to do with love somehow, but I still think that this would be worth the buy for most people. I honestly don't know if all freestyle CD's are as good as this, but I WILL check some other ones out. Below is my track Rating (1-5): 01 - 5
A most excellent choice.

The release starts off with the title track "Bad of the Heart." And oh, what a start it is! Freestyle at its best, the orchestration and vocals throw you onto the dance floor and create an anthemic piece that you can't deny in dancing and singing along with. Released as a single, this song had pretty big radio and club success. Get the remixes for this one too if you can... they're AWESOME. A little more happy, but carrying on the awesome orchestrations and vocals, "Love's Contagious" is another upbeat, fun dance classic with a positive message. George slows down to power ballad mode with "Serenade You" and its smooth Latin orchestrations. Another ballad, "Passing Time" is slower, a bit more atmospheric and very touching with your basic late 80s light pop/rock feel. But get ready to rev it up again and sweat on the dance floor! Also released as a single, "Without You" is another Freestyle classic, equal in power to "Bad of the Heart" in its orchestration, dance floor appeal and singability (especially the harmonies). There are two sets of remixes for this single. The first remixes came out in '89 or '90 and are amazing! A second set of remixes came out in 1998 (available here at Amazon.com) and are a bit more updated for the late 90s. [Personally, I prefer the original mixes.] Another fun up-tempo dance tune is "Stop that Girl" that takes a bit more of a dance pop feel, though there are still some awesome Freestyle elements. "Who Needs Love" slows down to something of a classic early 90s r&b pop ballad with its bouncy syncopation and almost whispered vocals and a bridge rap (a scary comparison, but it sounds very similar to Milli Vanilli). Back to Freestyle, "Look Into My Eyes" was another single close in power to the previous singles, but it didn't fare quite as well as its predecessors in the charts. However, there's no denying its power, and you easily get lost in the orchestrations as you dance and sing along. A little funkier in its style and beat, "What Could've Been" is great attitude dance floor material with another cool rapped bridge. The release ends on a slower, pop-ballad note with "No Matter What," a beautiful duet with Brenda K. Starr (remember her?). George LaMond is an amazing artist whom I respect immensely. Bad of the Heart is an incredible debut and gets a strong 5 star rating, placing easily within my top 50 releases of all time. This release introduced me to Freestyle music, and it fueled my desire to create fun, upbeat, layered, and powerful dance music. And even as George has released several excellent follow up albums, this one still holds a special place in my heart after all these years. Listening to Bad of the Heart was an epiphany for me, and its influence will stay with me for the rest of my life. If you love to dance, if you loved the music scene in the late 80s/early 90s, you MUST have this release in your collection. Layered, anthemic orchestrations coupled with awesome lyrics and vocals make this an easy purchase decision for anyone who has ever loved to get out on a dance floor. Musicians who also enjoy great pop/dance/Freestyle compositions will get a definite earful from this release and a lot of inspiration. And if you like "Bad of the Heart" and "Without You," try to find the remix singles released back in 1989/1990. They're worth every penny and every moment of listening to them! Even before the Latin/Hispanic music revolution taking place today in 2000, George LaMond was making his mark as an accomplished artist with an amazing talent. Thank you, George, for sharing with us. Your talent, power, and beauty have been a blessing to anyone who has shared in experiencing your amazing musical talent. ... Read more | |

To my knowledge, this is one of the most underrated & slept-on albums I can think of. This is everything a late 90's NY hip-hop album should have been. Fresh dope beats, arrogant smooth lyrics and an all-star cast of NY producers. Listen. DJ Premier did one of his nicest jobs EVER on track 7, The Actual. Pete Rock shines like the sun on track 3, Priceless. Other production by Rockwilder and of course ONYX. F.Y.I: "Just Live", track 17, is one of the best tracks I have ever heard to this day. Bottom Line: This is truly a great album. I highly recommend it to any east-coast hip-hop fan. 4 stars. Peace.
