5-0 out of 5 stars Ascend Your Mood
My fiance ordered this cd as a surprise for me back in 2002, knowing I've been wanting it for over a year... and it was really a great surprise!

If you're a fan of LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad then this cd is right up your alley. This cd has a very atmospheric feel to it and while the drums may be high bpm, it is a very relaxing and uplifing set. Instrumentally the cd is flawless, however I can see how some say that DRS's vocals hurt the review they gave. Personally I like DRS's MCing, some consider it random and sporatic but I see it as being a progressive freestyle and it matches the atmospheric/progressive D&B well (ie: MC Conrad). He calmly spits the rhymes freely as they come to him and does tend to repeat a few of the bars here and there throughout the entire cd, but I like that too. It gives the set a "trademark" feel. The 2nd cd is just as mind-blowing as the first, it's unmixed with no MC and they really open some new boundaries within the genre of atmospheric and jazzy D&B.

Bottom line, if you think you might be interested in this buying cd then I'm sure you'll probably love it. It's one of my all-time favorite cd's, nothing hits the spot quite like this gem.

1-0 out of 5 stars ...10 STARS IF IT WERE INSTRUMENTAL
these albums should be released with the instrumental tracks!!

as hard as i try, i just can't get into these type of raps over this type of music. the raps are totally random. in my opinion, the music is totally spoiled.

then again, it's my opinion.

good lookin & lookin good need to re-release these and other jams as instrumentals.

4-0 out of 5 stars great cd...i highly recommend
real groovy, with a little jazz, but keeps the smooth edge of drum n bass. but the first cd, (there are 2) is slightly spoiled by DRS rapping over it. Some people wont mind, but i find it a little repetive and unoriginal. and then he would rap over some really good parts of the music, but not really complementing the sound. cd 2 is great though. that alone is worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars addictive
this is a rather experimental mix of d'n'b and hip hop (without the yo's). the artists of goodlooking records care for their customers and therefore they produce albums that can be heard more than once. these tunes can stay in your mind for a long time . this is real art because it can change the way you look at things. a quiet masterpiece ... 2-0 out of 5 stars random file shuffling on a laptop
Sonically, this could be a complex sequence of computer noises in chaotic order that only Otto knows, or just random file shuffling on a laptop. The lone, standout exception is "Tympanic Calcoolus" with an MC desperately attempting to transmit from the apocalypse, a bare beat to guide him.

Meaning, if you're the type of person eager for a fractured, excruciatingly long headgame, you have some exemplary material. The other 99.9% of you will last just ten minutes, tops - guaranteed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hyper-kinetik robotik-funk de la Schematic Records...
Super-sonik, futurisitc sounds from Miami... For the last two years, Schematic Records has been pumping out some of the dopest, most forward-thinking music around- this is no exeption. Delicious micro-programming, state-of the-art electronics, and lovely robot-tones. Upon the first listen, I was kind of confused, and disoriented by the sheer number of sounds, and frequency with which they were changing. Upon repeated listenings, I became more enthralled, detecting new rythyms and melodies each time. This album is DEFINATELY worth your hard-earned money, especially if you have an adventerous ear, and like music that is new and different. If you are into the sounds of Richard Devine, Autechre, or Matmos, you will totally love this (especially on a nice set of headphones or some boomin' speakers). Schematic rules, and is definately in my opinion the label of the moment. Only Skam, Warp, Worm Interface, and Beta Bodega can keep up with the fresh, futuristic output of Schematic Records. Let's hope the innovation and sweet sounds continue. Otto Von Schirach is definately a sublime madman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another masterpiece from the "Schematic" label
Otto von Schirach to me sounds a little bit like a Richard Devine who has lost all restrictions. I love it. Each song must consist of hundreds of little distorted sound snippets which *appear* to be all over the place. But in fact, they are not, and even though the CD is not easily accessible it's an absolute masterpiece. I hope that this is where a lot of the "abstract" electronic music is going.

4-0 out of 5 stars Happy robot music with soul
Blippy, fun, interesting electronic music. This music is very similar to Mouse on Mars in its use of rhythm and interesting sounds. In fact, there are seemingly a wider variety of sounds than even on a Mouse on Mars album (if you can believe that possible). Rhythmically complex, but rhythm is played out by a myriad of curious sounds (curiously, many of these sounds have a bubbly, wet feel). The sounds and sequences are constantly changing. This is happy robot music. Mechanical, but with a warmth not often felt in music this synthesized. Most songs have lyrics but they are usually obscured in the background and only surface at short bursts of quietness. The lyrics have a campy, old sci-fi movie feel but are interesting when they poke through the texture of the other sounds. A very inspired, interesting album, always requiring more listenings because of the sheer volume of aural activity. Overall, the album sounds like robots and machines gaining sentience, gaining emotion and feeling, and trying to deal with it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blame knocks you out
This is the best stunning record of the Progression Series. Blame always had better mixes than Bukem, and in this particular release he outperforms himself. You might find the other Progression Sessions sounding flat, still you will enjoy this one after several listenings. If you like GLR kinda stuff, only.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mixed by Blame not Bukem
I love every progression session series and this is no exception. A fine release from Good Looking Records. These beats will twist your mind. The scientific sounds of Blame are sure to have a special place in anyone's drum and bass collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars parallel universe is the ultimate drum&bass album!
Along with Goldies "TIMELESS" album this album by 4HERO is one of (if not THE) first albums to determine the new quality and direction for Drum and Bass. All the tracks on the album are very atmospheric. You can enjoy them both by lounging in your chair and by dancing to it. The songs vary from "hardcore, raw sounds to groovy, spacy structures. I am a great Drum and Bass enthousiast and I can say that this album is the one of the best albums that I have in my collection of over 300 albums. 5-0 out of 5 stars Quintissential Aphex Twin, If such can be said
Rarely stopping at any loops or lethargy, 51-13 Aphex Singles collection is a chest full of quirky songs that for some reason or another are instantly identifiable as his, or inspired by him. Included are several remixes of the ear-splitting "Ventolin", each of which are almost but not entirely unlike the original, (including a remix by Cylob Ind.), Some songs from his On EP (1994) and his great Donkey Rhubarb EP. There is one track not found on other discs, this is the last track, the "respect list", done in MacInTalk Pro computer voices. My most favoured tracks are "On", "Donkey Rhubarb", and tracks 6, 10 and 9. Of suprise value is the rendition of "Icct Hedral" from "...i care because you do" by Philis Glass using full instrumentation and vocals. For those who are used to Aphex Twin's rather bare liner notes, these are full of information. Unfortunately, I have not found a translation from Japanese. This album seems to be a good complement to "...i care because you do" and probably an easier listen than "Richard D. James Album". Still, in all likelyhood, most people buying this album won't do it before buying a great many others, in which case all I've said is of moot value. But if you are wealthy, and want something of value, treasure this disc.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Rated This 5 For The Music
The price for 12 songs, you can just cop independantly at warpmart.com or download for free on some shareware, is overwhelming. I'm sick of warp getting away with pricing things high just because they're based in Europe. They have an office in New York, so I don't see what the problem is, other than the fact they want to grab all the dough off of hard-working Americans as they possibly can.

1-0 out of 5 stars No, that's not it.
Have you seen this odd disc and wondered what it was? Well, wonder no more! It's just a quick hack job, doubtless meant to cash in on Aphex Twin's reputation, that somehow manages to exploit both the artist and his fans. Specifically, it contains three singles - "On," "Ventolin," and "Donkey Rhubarb." That's it. There aren't any bonus tracks, live tracks, new tracks or anything special whatsoever. Oh, wait - I forgot that the last track, "Respect List," is one that doesn't appear anywhere on any other Aphex Twin release. Too bad that it consists only of thirty-eight seconds of computerized voices reciting a bunch of names. That's it. That's the whole track. Now tell me, was there any point to including it other than to lure fans into buying the disc?

It's also not a point in the disc's favour that one of the three singles contained within it is "Ventolin," one of Aphex Twin's weakest moments in general and probably his worst single. The original song is, let's face it, awful, and none of the remixes are good, either. But even aside from that, this CD doesn't even feature the three singles in their entirety. It lacks two B-sides from the "On" single (to say nothing of the remix of the title track), and one from "Donkey Rhubarb" - although, I might add, there was enough space for all of these songs left on this CD. Completists, thus, are left unsatisfied, and have to hunt down the original singles anyway. The rest of us have to pay an exorbitant amount of money to wade through piles of frequently unlistenable non-music, like "73-Yips" (one of Aphex Twin's worst creations, and thus, of course, the only one of the "On" B-sides that WEA bothered to include on this CD), to get to the few good parts.

What really irritates me, though, is the fact that, all of the above points notwithstanding, fans will _still_ have to buy this disc. Why? Because, ever since the Donkey Rhubarb single went out of print, it's the only easily available CD that contains "Donkey Rhubarb" and "Pancake Lizard," two of Aphex Twin's finest moments, as well as a good alternate version of "Icct Hedral" that's quite possibly better than the one on I Care Because You Do. The disc also contains "On," another of AFX's best songs - in fact, it's the first track on here, no doubt meant to serve as bait - but it's widely available for a far more reasonable price on its own still-in-print single. To summarize, WEA have done everything they could do to make fans buy this disc, and nothing to actually ensure their satisfaction. They should be ashamed of themselves for doing this, and so should Warp for letting them do it.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best from RDJ
ok i'll start off with the reasons this cd lost a star. first, the last time i checked a cd's full length is around 80 minutes, so if this is a collection from 3 singles, what happened to the other 2 tracks from the On single? they definitely would have fit. Also the price is quite high, youre better off buying a used copy which is what i did, amazon sellers are usually very reliable. so it was worth the [money], which is what youd pay for an american version at some insanely highpriced chain like FYE or something.
anyway, this cd reminds me more of a mix cd of i would make of aphex twin material. its a fun listen and doesn't lose your attention, not that any aphex twin really does, but every track is different. don't be discouraged by the multiple remixes of ventolin, if this cd had no track listing you would have NO idea that these were all remixes of the same song. donkey rhubarb is great, even though i can't help but think of the disturbing video for it every time i hear it. anyway i love this cd, if youre just getting into the work of richard d james, i'd say start with i care because you do and move both forward and backwards into his huge repertoire of music. this is a good buy for the music, but not the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great songs but
There's too many versions of Ventolin . It feels like there is a bit of an overkill in that respects but having said it's a nice CD to have a listen to ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars INTELLIGENT,DARK,HARD,JAZZ FUSED DRUM&BASS!
This CD is amazing! It showcases several different style of Drum&Bass and all ten tracks are worth listening to. My three favorite tracks are 'Specials','Hypnotic Poison',& 'View to a Fortress'. Drum&Bass fans, put this one in your CD cases.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Drum&Bass/Jungle CD This Year!
I was happy with Illform's work on the Shadow: Hard Sessions CD, so I ordered this title 'Next Level Fusion'. The CD was a shock. I didn't know it would be so good. The CD contains your typical hard tech-step tracks but has an intelligent feel to it. It also has your more Ragga Jungle influenced tracks with a jazz fusion vibe. There is even a trip-hop track, 'specials', with cool vocals, hard beat, live piano and synth solo, and a simple yet effective upright bassline. The intro song 'injection sequence', is like a preparation for this musical journey. 'Combustion Chamber', is one of the hardest, rolling tracks that just pounds away at you and forces you to move. The CD basically mutates from dark/ambient d&b into a futuristic jazz-step excursion. All in all, it is a must buy if you are true drum&bass fan or just someone who likes good music!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eclectic, Drum&Bass
This CD is one of the most well rounded CD's in electronica. I think everyone who likes electronic music should have this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good hip hop cd!
This is a very fun hip hop cd. This is Gold Chains first self titled track. I heard them recently in Seattle and realized this band has a pretty good following considering how many people were singing along with them while they were playing. They bring a lot of energy not only to their live performances
but also to the cd.

Pick this cd up, the price is definitly worth the quality of the listed five songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars death to hip-hop
I'm so sick of watered-down white boy backpacker hip-hop. It's a genre with a lifespan shorter than the open bottle of milk in my fridge. Not that mainstream black hip-hop is much better. Unless Missy's singing it, it's probably boring, uninspiring, and grating.

Then there's this. Lights went off when I heard it. Is it grating? Hell yeah, but in a MUCH better way than the Jay-Z's of the world. Id DHR and Tigerbeat 6 made a hip-hop record. Agressive, loud, and fun. digit. ... Read more

This is the electronica equivalent of a tribute album:Instead of gathering bands together to cover the songs of an influential group, here we have a bunch of more or less well-known DJs (including members of Goldie's Metalheadz crew) remixing and reconstructing actual recorded works in their own image, namely with drum and bass (a.k.a. jungle) beats. In this case, the object of affection is Art of Noise, a clear forerunner to the current boom in sampled and spliced dance music.

The Drum and Bass Collection is the latest in a series of Art of Noise remix compilations, following 1990's The Ambient Collection and 1991's more techno- and rave-oriented release, The Fon Mixes. Considering that Drum and Bass is, thus, the third new Art of Noise record since the group disbanded eight years ago, perhaps the only tribute here is to the infinite possibilities for recycling old songs in this high-tech age. Then again, there's little here to suggest these tracks have anything to do with Art of Noise. For instance, in the hands of the London duo Flyright, Art of Noise's hit "Peter Gunn" (itself a drastic remake of the '50s television theme) loses all traces of the original's most distinguishing feature, Duane Eddy's twang guitar lead line. Similarly, Lightfoot's reworking of "Yebo," Art of Noise's 1989 collaboration with South African singing group Mahlathini and the Mahotella Queens retains only two syllables of the original vocal part.

The question, then, is: If the rhythms are altered and the melodies disappear, what makes this an Art of Noise record? The answer: nothing. But, then, in the strange world of techno, all matters of source material and songwriting are bound to remain fuzzy. Do yourself a favor: Keep all inquiries to yourself and just concentrate on those crazy beats. --Roni Sarig

3-0 out of 5 stars Absolute disappointment!
If you decided to check this one out for the "Art of Noise" name on it? Ruuuun away from it. I actually had to throw it away, this is how upset I was. Imagine buying new CD by J.M.Jarre to find "Metallica" on it. If you want the best remix album by "Art of Noise"? Go to "Ambient Collection".

3-0 out of 5 stars A good drum & bass album
This is a good album for drum and bass fans. However, if you're buying this strictly because you're an Art of Noise fan, you'll probably be disappointed. You can occasionally make out connections to the Art of Noise songs that are being massively remixxed and that is a special treat for someone like me. Also, at least one of the songs is too repetitive even for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's not the Art of Noise, but what is?
At first glance, it seems true that this CD could just as well be called "Plastic Bananas: The Drum and Bass Collection" for all it has to do with AON. However, if you can get past this disappointment, it is an excellent compilation. Though there are few explicit sounds from the AON's catalog, this CD as a whole does as good a job in sketching a landscape in sound as the best discs of the real AON, such as In No Sense? Nonsense! or their newer Seduction of Claude Debussy. In fact, it may be the most imaginative CD of its genre I've ever heard, managing to be evocative while conforming to the rather strict DnB form. AON fans tend to be the kind who don't want to listen to the same trite sound over and over again anyway, and this disc is no less original or interesting than one written by AON themselves. Though I've owned it for years, it's still in the short stack of CDs I play often, which is high praise indeed.

1-0 out of 5 stars No Art of Noise Here!!!
I agree with most of the others. This is NOT THE ART OF NOISE. The only song that even has AON in it is "Something Always Happens". The other songs are unrecognizable. The Art of Noise are AWESOME. If you like cool remixes of Art of Noise, don't get this CD!! But since it has AON on it, it is in my collection, which I have every Art of Noise CD, album and 12" remixes made to date. HUGE FAN.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is not art.
Don't get me wrong... I do like d&b remixes and I love the art of noise but this album is more noise then art. When musicians rely on drum machines to make their music sound 'cool' this is what happens. There are a couple of exceptions on this album such as opus4 & peter gunn which must have taken effort and talent to create. However for the bulk of the rest of this album.... pllease!! ... Starting with 2001's Masses, an all-star effort featuring Matthew Shipp and a cast of downtown jazz luminaries, Spring Heel Jack's Ashley Wales and John Coxon have sculpted free-jazz source material into sometimes brilliant, but always interesting, sound collages. With Amassed, the duo use Shipp again, but lean heavily on European players like drummer Han Bennink and saxophonist Evan Parker, as well as guitarist Jason Pierce, leader of the space-rock band Spiritualized. The music is often surprisingly subdued and sometimes downright lovely--on "Lit," Kenny Wheeler plays a soulful trumpet over slowly shifting organ chords until the sound of a crumpling can finishes off the song. Things are their most cacophonous on "Duel," when Parker and Bennink go toe to toe as other sounds slowly move in and surround the two players, finally drowning them out for a time. Dynamic, imaginative, and overwhelming, Amassed defines this new fusion genre by realizing many of the possibilities of both electronic production advances and avant-garde jazz. --Tad Hendrickson ... 5-0 out of 5 stars improvisation and force override electronics
Sometimes I think that music sellers believe that we net-surfers are stupid, or that its is more important for us what we read on the Internet than what we hear. Please don't misunderstand me: this is an excellent record, but it is not drum n'bass at all. Electronics are one more free instrument (it reminds me in many places the mid '70s pieces by Braxton and Teitelbaum), and acoustic instruments this wild cannot surrender to an athmospheric, steady tempo, similar to what Nils Petter Molvaer or Jon Hassel do. 4-0 out of 5 stars My introduction to lamb
I'll admit that this is the first lamb album I've listened to. But I truly love it. Lamb very skillfully molds smooth rhythms and melodies into phenomenal songs. Although this album lacks the level of sophistication that most Massive Attack and Portishead albums have, it's a soothing and extremely pleasant journey. If you're into Chill Out music, this is a definite buy.

Let's just say that I miss the upright bass and jazzy sounds of the first two albums. Although "Darkness" is less cloying than the almost vomit-inducing (in my opinion) "What Sound," it is only a baby step away...
The first and third tracks caught my ear, but by "Angelica", (which is merely one phrase of a Debussy piano piece set to a beat and repeated over... and over....), my attention was drifting. I have no idea what happened, but this is not the same Lamb that produced one of my favorite songs of all time, the soaring, epic, "Gorecki," but a once-interesting and innovative group pushing for popular, Dido-sized and -shaped success. My advice: bring back the wooden bass, Lamb! I'm begging you! And for all you peops interested in this band, pick up Lamb's first 2 albums. They are guaranteed to please!

4-0 out of 5 stars too much lamb, not enough wolf
Maybe it should be only three stars, not four. Undoubtedly, there are some gorgeous tunes on this album. "Angelica" and "Wonder" are superlative, for instance. However, whether this is progress for the duo, as has been suggested, is a trickier proposition. With their first two albums, conjuring a mood out of a variety of dark types of music, among them drum-and-bass, trip hop, and acid jazz, Lamb created a perfectly original sound: trademark vocals over very sparse core composed primarily of powerful and inventive beats, a prominent upright bass, and strident wind instruments. The band occupied its own musical space. Beginning with "What Sound," they gave up that space and stepped into a far more densely populated arena, where Moby, Everything But the Girl, and so many others compete to lay down ravishing pop hooks imbued with electronic magic. You might call this a process of beautification, which began with "What Sound": Lamb now floats tender melodies over lavish keyboards and acoustic guitars, and, as if to emphasize the rosy atmosphere, throws in some surprisingly optimistic - and trite - lyrics about us all being one and not having to worry about dying, and so forth. Inevitably, there are drawbacks to this new stance: once you abandon a certain harsh musical independence and begin to sound as if you were vying, with a kerjillion others, for a chart hit, you necessarily expose yourself to comparison. About half of this album compares favorably with everyone else in the field, the other half does not. I've always loved Lamb's instrumentals, and "Angelica" is possibly the most memorable tune on the CD. But the loveliness begins to peter out with "Sun" and gradually becomes too bland to register. Some of the last songs on the CD, to folky foursquare rhythm, sound like something you might hear done much better by Beth Orton. I've been listening to "Between Darkness..." repeatedly, with utter enjoyment, but cannot remember most of it. To say that I've not been deeply affected by it, as I was by "Lamb" and "Fear of Fours," would be an understatement. Too much lambness, not enough teeth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hammering that nail in: Lamb rise even higher...
When Massive Attack failed to keep up with their own quality standards (and yes I know that's sometimes hard to define) a point was proven once again: it's incredibly hard after 3 albums to keep fulfillinf the expectations of your own fans especially if you've accustomed them to top-notch stuff.

Not so for Lamb.
Lamb, prove with "Between Darkness..." that this is a group totally underrated and with potential that goes way beyond our imaginations so far, indeed, Lamb are a group that after 3 brilliant albums make a comeback that not only is a step into a different direction but simoultaneously a step forward.

While the signs were already there for those that were watching (or listening) with their previous (and also stunning) album "What sound", this, their new LP is one that comes through not as an electronica release (even though it is) but as a very organic-sounding one.

It seems that Lamb are able to convey more feeling with each new release as such is here the case. It also seems that their singer seems to be maturing in a spectacular way. Her voice stays with you long after the CD is over and it makes you come back constantly for more.

Some critics said that this close to a "progressive electronica" album but I'm not sure what that is supposed to mean. Perhaps they are trying to point out the absence of pompous deep beats or power basses. If you've heard Lamb's "Scratch bass" in their previous album you probably know what I mean, but, having siad that, i note once again that Lamb attempt here a "different" direction and the result is nothing less than spectacular.

Dark, deeply heartfelt, tremendously atmospheric and more melodic than we've heard them before, "Between Darkness & Wonder" is an album that yes might go unnoticed in the storm of garbage the music industry is raining us with, but for those that will discover it will be another Lamb gem to cherish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Newest Lamb Album Shines
If you enjoyed Lamb's previous album, What Sound, you might want to pick up their newest release, Between Darkness and Wonder. It's a departure from their older releases, but it is still definitely Lamb. This album takes a bit more listening to get into, but the latter half is really worth waiting for. (From Please until the end of the album...words can't even describe) The remix-Debussy stuff from Track 4 is a little Moby-ish, but overall this CD is excellent. If you're not willing to fork over the import price, shoot for What Sound instead, as it is a stronger, more accessible album. BD&W is worth it if you're a die hard fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure hardstep and jump up pounders from the early years!
Sheer ragga hardstep and jump up madness from the days of old! Although many junglists will insist that the amen style is played out, I still listen to this CD for a dose of heavy breaks, rudebwoy chatter, and quivering basslines. If you're still loyal to the old school sound of 1994-95 then you'll especially like "Limb by Limb" by Cutty Ranks, "Anything Test" by Pure, "Come Easy" by Ant Miles and Liftin Spirits, and the infamous dance floor smasher- "Super Sharp Shooter" by DJ Zinc. This style of jungle may be old but it's a part of drum'n'bass history so take note and learn from the pioneers! Biggin' up all the UK, Canada, and Stateside massive!

4-0 out of 5 stars Slammin ragga and poundin jungle!!
From start to finish, this jungle compilation is incredible.Ragga jungle tracks like Limb by Limb and Rince Out stand out as some of the greatest. This CD is a little outdated (2-3 years) and jungle on the scene is alittle different now, but still a must for any jungle lover out there!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE...

4-0 out of 5 stars cool cd, i guess.
i kinda like ragga jungle, so i bought this cd(along with volumes 4 and 5). i don't know why, but the covers of these cd's remind me of that dire straights video hehehehe.ok, so if you like ragga jungle buy this cd. but i highly recomend vol.5 because it has the "super sharp shooter" track on it, and vol.5 get's the most play in my cd player as compared to vol.4 and 3.peace

DJ Hype serves up a massive helping of jungle's ruffest riddims. There are anthems all around for all da rude bwoys. The album kicks off with the classic "War in 94" and grooves into other mad ragga 'choons by such notables as Dillinja, Andy C, and Krome & Time. Everything is smoothly mixed and the song selection is fantastic. This should be in every junglist's collection whether be jamming at home or blasting it in tha car. lighta!

5-0 out of 5 stars Early Jungle At It's Best
