5-0 out of 5 stars Bootsy and Buddy rock out big time!
This album rocks hard and it is ridiculous that it went by largely unnoticed by the rock community at large. Guitarist Steve Salas is great and really screams. Produced by Bill Laswell, there is an interesting mixture of hard rock, funk and some freaky experimental textures. Overall the songwriting is strong -- strong enough to have gotten some radio play on any progressive rock station ("But oh, wait. They're Black and Native American. Only white guys play rock. We don't know what to do with this.") Play it you morons! Oh, poor ignorant radio, one of the last bastions of segregation in America. "Walls Came Down" is a great song which applies to that situation quite well.
Definitely has a Band of Gypsys vibe combined with Funkadelic, but with some slightly pop-edged songs (in a good way.)
Salas' vocals are also very strong.
Overall this is a solid release worthy of attention.
For me, the best part of this disc is hearing Bootsy just jammin out on some balls-out rock n roll. You know him & Buddy had a good time making this. I was hoping they'd tour and/or do a follow-up but no go as of yet... Oh well. (I can dream can't I?)

4-0 out of 5 stars Bootsy and Buddy Miles perfect combination

5-0 out of 5 stars For REAL Music Appreciators Only!
I happened to stumble upon a CD called "Hed Sessions" while shoppin at the local Media Play here in Pittsburgh. I listened to it and heard a tight song by "Droid". So i read the inside and it said that they do their music live. I went out on a hunt to all the local music spots and came across this cd. This is probably one of the best cd's that I have ever heard in my life, being a strong music listener and having a huge music background. Imagine sittin on some grass in a park in the middle of the day, and it's a nice 78 degree sunny day. You have a live drummer that can play at 180 bpms, a trumpet player with the most ambient sound, and a key board player with ill effects right in front of you. This album is a "must-buy". If you don't like it, you are just a consumer! I'll be lookin for more! Check out Saru and Illforms also! PEACE ANd LOVE To ALL!

5-0 out of 5 stars What in gods names is this!!
This is just awesome. It switches styles from African to R&B, rap, ambient, techno, and rupture twists and destroys every song to its most primal element. Creating a magnificent soundscape only rivaled by the Avalanches Since I Left You. PEOPLE BUY THIS!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Defying description, one beat at a time.
I like doing my own compilations of cds, burning my favorite songs from a bunch of different cds onto one cd that I can listen to in the car. This was the first and only cd where I just burned the entire thing for a copy in the car (only burn cds that you own kids) so I could keep the original copy in my stereo. It's that good. It's fantastic. It's got beats, rhymes, and bass that are intermingled into a package that sounds like it was the source for each bit of song that /rupture utilized. Not quite techno/electronic, not quite a dj mix album, all original in presentation. Check out the track listing above for a taste of what was used, but don't expect /rupture to just sit idly by while an Aaliyah song spins. /rupture is a sound weaver, mixing and matching beats from two, three, even four songs like they were made as one to begin with. Ultimately, this cd defies any genre that I may have in my personal cd collection, making its own niche near techno/electronic, just north of hip-hop and a few spaces down from break beats. This is a masterpiece like you could never believe without giving it a spin. ... Read more

One of the very first major faces in drum 'n' bass music, LTJ Bukem has always enjoyed the spacier, spiritual side of the breakbeat arena. Known for weaving atmospheres and moods using a mixture of almost jazzy pieces and tribal rhythms, Bukem has been both prolific and successful. This Producer set is one of a clutch of recent Bukem releases and serves up a tasty nine-track sampler illustrating how Bukem works his technology yet manages to retain a thoroughly organic sound with his electronic creations. Opener "Cosmic Interlude" (Bukem, like many drum 'n' bass stalwarts, has a fascination with outer space and science fiction) is a peaceful, downtempo arrangement of jazz and hip-hop; "Demons Theme" sees Bukem kick into heavier tribal break beats; while the superb acid-house-tinged undertow of "Atlantis" offers a view to the early days of breakbeat. Rarely hardcore, always evocative, passionate, and certainly innovative in the drum 'n' bass world, the flavors that comprise LTJ Bukem's work are admirably represented here. --Steffan Chirazi ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Best Of Bukem
I am a big fan of Bukem, but was disappointed to hear the same tracks on many of his CDs. If you have many of his previous releases bypass this disc. If you are new to Bukem this will be a worthwhile buy. I recommend Logical Progression sessions for his better stuff.

3-0 out of 5 stars -=Low Key=-
Personally, I found it meandering, dated and repetitive. And yes, I do like most types of drum & bass, but I found the newer tracks on this album more or less as evolved as ancient tracks like "Music" (also featured here.)

Maybe try one of his 'Earth' series compilations instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funky beat
I heard it in A virgin Megastore and so I asked what the C.D. was. They said it was this. I looked at it and I thought I would buy it. It adds funk to a party, adds chill after school and is just pure heaven.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but mostly old stuff
Bukem is my favourite artist. I own all of his albums. Like all of Bukem's stuff, this is a great CD. But if you are looking for new stuff, this isn't the product to buy: all of the tracks are on previously released albums.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a MUST HAVE CD
When I think Drum and Bass, I think of LTJ Bukem. His Good Looking label is amazing. His drum and bass is a lot more low key with low rolling bass lines and jazzy, ambient samples. Very cool to chill out to. If you like this, check out Earth volume 2 and 3, or any of his Logical Progression compilations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a fantastic collaboration of funk- based jungle music
This is jungle sky is a wonderfully intruiging title for a ground breaking, mezmerizing, not to mention irrisistably groove splitting album. The music is extremely progressive and pioneering, but the funky beats rival those of funk fore fathers such as James Brown, Stevie Wonder, or Earth Wind and Fire. Obviously, I reccoment this album to all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LTJ IS THE SHH...
This is a gem right here. Forget his Earth series, LTJ's Progression Sessions are where its at! The beats are hot and a little jazzy-just like I like it!!!!! If you've never heard LTJ live, you definitely missed out. He is THE BEST electronica dj ever!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Sorry people, but I found this one disappointing, the continual mix seems to go on a bit, not like Bukem's other stuff at all.
It does indeed sound like the live set he played last year, but somehow there just isn't enough variety. The second CD being purely instrumental is a bit of a rip off really.

5-0 out of 5 stars Instant groove :)
I bought this album shortly before seeing LTJ and MC Conrad play live in Tallahassee, Florida. The show was amazing and this album captures the performance brilliantly. While not recorded live, there is a definite energy about the whole album with the ebbs and flows in all the right places. Conrad's vocals blend effortlessly into LTJ's silky smooth mixes and to havw one without the other would be wrong. Brilliant.

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is increadible
Although some of the lyrics are well recycled from the other Progression Sessions, the beats make this album absolutelly unique. I can't believe anyone can mix d'n'b so well. While not quite as intense as PS4, this album is still a top notch production. Extremelly groovy, easy to get into right from the get go, this disk made me upgrade my car stereo.

5-0 out of 5 stars cookies and cream
This is another intelligant album from the man they call bukem. Made all the more better for the represantaion of conrad and drs. 4-0 out of 5 stars Grooverider remix kicks!
I can't tell if this is the version of this single with the grooverider and Ed Rush/Optical remixes. The original version of this song just doesn't quite work, and Grooverider reinterprets it for the dancefloor as probablythe best argument yet to mix jungle and metal. (with the origianl mix beingone of the best arguments against). Ed Rush and Optical do somethingsimilar, but not quite as impressive. This would get five stars if itweren't for the original. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars genius
taking the freewheeling rhythms and virtuosity of Squarepusher, tossing in doses of Aphex Twin and the kitchen sink, and you've got Aaron Funk, aka Venetian Snares. Familiarities aside, VS certainly has cut a big hole for himself in current music that sounds like nothing else. After breaking out just a couple of years ago and since dropping 5 full length albums, he's the one of the brightest young artists (and most vital) in 10 years. This is his best. VS cuts, slaps, clicks, buzzes, and crashes his way through melody and rhythm like literally NONE before him. Its often a bit overwhelming, but in a truly satisfying and inspiring manner. Drill n bass and glitch cut across a barren, generally bassless landscape with actual vocals and classical and disorientingly modern melodies sitting atop the maelstrom. Hands down the best track here is "Cashew". A track like this can hold up to anything AFX can put up. After 5 albums, this guy is getting better and better. AFX and Squarepusher have a new peer. Now, lets get that new KID606 album out.

4-0 out of 5 stars More.
Frenetic, freakish rhythms in the same vein as Squarepusher, Autechre and Aphex Twin. Intricate enough to just listen to, but with enough energy that you can't help bobbing your head along with it. Occasionally gets more abstract and detached than I like, but still very well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars AND THEN THERE WAS ARRON FUNK...
IT IS THE KING OF BREAKCORE'S NEWEST RELEASE. STOP THINKING AND BUY IT. NOW, RIGHT NOW, OR HIS CATS WILL EAT YOU!

4-0 out of 5 stars free improv/psychedelic-electronica fusion
This is an impressive document of a tour of the U.K., including January 03 recordings from Brighton and Bath. The unusual line-up includes several free jazz/free improv veterans (Evan Parker on sax, Han Bennink on drums, William Parker on bass, and Matthew Shipp on electric keyboards), Jason Pierce, aka "J. Spaceman" of Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized on guitar, and Spring Heel Jack (Coxon & Wales), the electronica duo.

Taken that combination of elements, it is not at all surprising that a common point would be the electric Miles, and that is where this disc begins, with a four-note theme from "In a Silent Way," to be specific. Pierce plays the John McLaughlin role of course. Evan Parker, on tenor, sounds much more like "A Love Supreme"-era Coltrane than on his own recordings. As through most of the 75 minutes, the electronica is not foregrounded, though it does emerge periodically to play a more focal role. Although the organization of the music is not made explicit, it seems that one of the reasons this ensemble could go under the moniker "Spring Heel Jack" is that Coxon & Wales serve as orchestrators or arrangers, setting up pre-arranged contexts for the other players. In other words, it seems to me that the improvisation is not total, but rather takes place within a structure. The Miles piece gradually morphs into an up-tempo section with someone playing what sounds like a stritch alongside Parker's sax. I suspect it's probably the other Parker, though he is credited only with bass, and he is probably the flute player in later sections as well. A lullaby follows, which is interrupted by electronic glitches. The glitches emerge into a section with vocal samples, and the first set ends with the return of the lullaby.

The second set, one continuous track, is actually two separate performances. The first opens with 8 minutes of energetic bass/percussion duet. Sax, guitar and electric piano enter, and the piece morphs into a funky number with walking bass and the closest we'll probably ever come to hearing Evan Parker play R&B. After applause and a break, the last 20 minutes is the "Spiritualized" section, a tragic dirge with a repeating, descending minor-key keyboard pattern. Sax and guitar scrawl chaotically over this pattern in a gradual crescendo, and then subside, replaced by a flute.

This live record follows two previous studio albums from the new free improv version of Spring Heel Jack ("Masses" in 01 and "Amassed" in 02, both also on Shipp's Thirsty Ear label). Somehow this project slipped past me until now. I'm impressed, though I have to say I think it would sound as good or better if the electronica was removed. It's a worthy fusion, though, and I certainly hope it brings new listeners from the electronica side over to the realm of free jazz/free improv! Back in the mid-90s when SHJ was putting out bass&drum albums I listened to a lot of electronica, and after the initial fascination wore off, I decided that what was missing was real live interaction of actual musicians. This is an example of moving in that direction. If you're coming from the electronica side and you like this, I encourage you to seek out Evan Parker's Electro-Acoustic Ensemble, with two ECM discs -- "Toward the Margins" and "Drawn Inward." It's real-time improv combining a free improv ensemble of long-standing with computer processers -- fantastic!

On a personnel note, my understanding is that Pierce was brought on board this project via Coxon & Wales having produced an early Spiritualized album (and his interest in free improv). It's interesting that Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, also of the Spacemen 3, has since formed a group called EAR -- Experimental Audio Research -- which has included Eddie Provost of the group AMM, 1960s free improv pioneers along with Evan Parker. Since Parker and Prevost are mates, perhaps they can bring about a Spacemen reconciliation and reunion on the basis of free improvisation..... ... Read more

LTJ Bukem’s Earth 6 isn’t really a new Bukem record, since the series exists to showcase up-and-coming acts on his Good Looking Records label. But the man and the label are essentially synonymous after a career spent putting ego and fame aside in favor of an overall sound. His name may fail to ring bells like a Digweed or an Oakenfold, but Bukem long ago claimed his spot in dance music’s hall of fame by inventing and expanding the ambient alchemy of breakbeats and jungle. Stellar examples of that sound heard on Earth 6 include the swanky breaks on Marcel’s "Solitudo 3" and "Jealous," as well as hypnotic MC work on ESP and Substance’s "Run The Gauntlet." Calmer rhythms rule here, as opposed to the hyper-speed jungle beats found on other Good Looking releases, but fans of airy ambience and downtempo will be happily anesthetized by Bukem’s melodious prescriptions. –Matthew Cooke ... 5-0 out of 5 stars exploring , thats what is all about .
LTJ BUKEM to me is a very smart man , he is able to enter different type of musical styles , master them , produce them , and market them .

In this EARHT 6 cd we have : SUBSTANCE ( R&B dance with loud and clear vocals ), RUN THE GAUNTLET ( "cant go in my water and not get wet" ) hard core rap with statement beats , OUTER MIND ( a nice D&B with a soothing sax and flut .

so for those of you who are at this moment lost in what will be called BUKEMS world please dont misjudge and try to catch up to what could be called a revolutionary musical moovement .

1-0 out of 5 stars Not one of his better CDs
I admit I haven't bought any of Bukems CDs since Progession Session Vol 5, but I was quite disappointed to find out that this CD is not even Jungle. This CD is more of an ecletic mix of chill out breaks at about 120 BPMs (certainly not the 170 you expect to hear on a jungle CD). This CD is more like jazzy lounge music. It's not a terrible CD, just not at all what I expected.

3-0 out of 5 stars Eh 3 stars
I own a couple LTJ Bukem cd's so bought this one on name alone. Granted this isn't a collection of HIS songs but the styles on this album are very similar to his stuff and he seems to have exquisite taste. So it's a good cd overall, but just nothing to get terribly excited about - he's done better before. Still, it's good background/chillout/late night listening music. Overall though, 3 stars which is still better than most "electronica" cds out there.
Check out Journey Inward if you're interested in a good preview of his work...

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm totally hooked...
This is by far the best CD I've bought this year. Yes it's abstract but there is an underlying sheer brilliance, maybe because I saw this piece performed live I was drawn in more easily but I purchased this cd the very next day and haven't stopped listening to it since. It's powerful, loud, grinding and orchestral at the same time. If you like the darker and more obscure sides of the Aphex Twin (e.g. selected ambient works vol II) or Throbbing Gristle's 'I.B.M.' off of their D.O.A. album then give this a listen.

3-0 out of 5 stars difficult listening
Panacea made a name for himself recording some of the most brutal tech-step drum and bass tracks of the nineties. He always appeared to be on the fringes of chaos, which lent his music the edge that put it two steps ahead of the rest of the pack as far as the d&b genre was concerned. However, while d&b's progress slowed and it grew to become the average Korn fan's dance music fascination, Panacea accelerated further and further away from conventional musicality.

Enter Brasilia: this release is one of several "Archittetura" releases on the Caipirinha label. There were signs that this release was on its way, although at first it may seem like a jarring departure from albums like "Twisted Designz" and "Low Profile Darkness." There is not a breakbeat in sight, for starters. But to those who may have picked up the odd 12" or two, or managed to sneak a peek at his progress via compilations such as "clicks_+_cuts" or "Modulation & Transformation", this may not seem like such a surprise. Needless to say, this is a different beast altogether from anything he's released in the past.

Beats have been replaced with pure, unaffected white noise. When the occasional rhythm does develop, it sounds more like incidental interference rather than calculated breaks. In the past Panacea incorporated bits of odd noises and shrill sounds under the surface of the music, but on "Brasilia" it rises to the surface and almost completely takes over.

Blisteringly loud, furious, and wildly unconventional, "Brasilia" is more likely to alienate listeners rather than attract them. The connections with the architect whose work is described within the liner are implied at best, but if nothing else at least there's something to read...?

1-0 out of 5 stars ex-nay on the brasilia!
i have heard a lot of Panacea's stuff at friend's house's and everything i've listened to i just fell in love with. so when i went out to buy one of the CD's for myself, i picked up this one. BIG MISTAKE! 13 out of the 20 songs are basicly silence with an occasional random distorted blast or cricket noises--literally! and then the remaining songs sorta have an implied beat.... but thats stretchin' it. i actually double checked the CD about 3 times to make sure it was the correct band because it was so bad. anyways.....unless you feel like buying something that sounds like they stuck a microphone in the middle of the forest at midnight, stay clear of this album! as for me, im gonna try to sell this one back to the music store! 5-0 out of 5 stars Compilations of reviews I found on this album -
I found this unwittingly on vinyl at a store that I never would have guessed would carry it. Very well put together drum n bass from Harris and Neil Harvey of PCM. I fluxuate as to whether I am more fond of this or QUOIT, but they are definately in the same ballpark. Deep, overmodulated bass notes squeeze in between hard, skipping drum beats. This wouldn't sound out of place in a dark drum n bass room, but I still get the impression that djs, at least the ones in the US, have no idea about this stuff. I would like for it to be a little faster, but I have a pitch slider, so I can fix that. Nice artwork as well, and the tracks are listed on the labels, unlike the QUOIT, so for the time being, it wins out just for that reason.

Credited to - mjeanes

slogan for today: "Never underestimate Mick". I did it. I confess and beg for mercy. I think that I have quite big collection of Harris' beat-oriented works and there was this moment when I asked myself a question. What else he can do to those rhythms to make my blood run faster? Don't get me wrong, I love it all, but after all those albums is there something more to unveil? There is. This time Neil Harvey (of PCM fame) opens a new line in the ongoing list of Harris' collaborations. The clash between rather slow, minimal breakbeat and mechanical structures of progressive drum'n'bass makes this record probably the fastest Harris album to date. It reminds me of a train journey. I don't know if you've had this feeling before, but I sometimes (when in a running train) listen to the sounds of the wheels hitting the little gaps between the tracks (especially on junctions) - it forms strange rhythms sometimes. Railway rhythm - it comes to my mind when listening most of the records signed by Mick, but this time it's a total blast. It's like a junction rhythms mixed up and treated combined with those guts moving basses. A machine gathering momentum and still accelerating. The railwayman's nightmare. Harris/Harvey - I hope these two will meet in the studio some time in the future to stir in the music pot again. In the meantime you will have to excuse me I have a train to catch...

Breakbeats and drum 'n' bass have become very common and increasingly popular forms ofpercussion within electronic music. With that said it's nice to know that some people are still willing to forge ahead with a unique approach, instead of getting sucked in by the complacency that musical popularity tends to entail. Mick Harris, best known for his work as the head of Scorn and a member of Painkiller, has shifted from the music of his recent collaborations into a disk of energetic percussion. This is the first time Birmingham DJ and PCM founder Neil Harvey has appeared under his name, and matched up with Harris they crank out a bass ridden collection of rhythmic instrumentals.

Lastsigh review:
The tracks are all set to a backdrop of distant, droning soundscapes with an ambient tinge. This is a slight platform for the rhythm, which sharply contrasts the melodic backdrop that adds more substance and character to the otherwise predictable course of the electronic drums. After Harris' sticky fallout with Invisible Records a while back there is the possibility that a lot more of his releases will be channeled through Sub Rosa. His music doesn't reflect the side of his personality that publicly voiced his profanity-laced disgust with Invisible, and that's definitely a good thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars jungle dub, sound system style
That Jungle is derived from hard hard roots dub is no secret, and this is a perfect combination of dancehall reggae,MC style,Jah Shaka style sound system bass pressure, and Ragga Junglist...Its really well done, and meticulously produced...MC Navigator lays down some conscious lyrics,UK roots sound system bass lines shudder menacingly, and sufferers lyrics abound..the best track by far is "Down in Rwanda",beautiful dub menace, with heart felt lyrics, and raw junglist drum patterns..."Badness a Madness" is the conscious follow up MC version from Navigator, exhorting the listener to live a spiritual, righteous life....I remember reading an interview with MC Navigator when he stated that hard hard roots rockers stepper Johnny Clarke was a major influence on him....it shows on this material,in regard to lyrics and vibes.

Jah Shaka had a HUGE influence on any and every bass explorer worth their salt in the UK Junglist dub scene...(check Dillinjah decision to call his new record label VALVE SOUND in homage to the MAMMOTH bass roar Shaka created from old valve amps)..More Rockers are worthy disciples carrying Shaka's banner into other musical realms.Buy this before it deletes, and while you are at it,buy "WORLD DANCE MUTANT SOUND SYSTEM",to catch some more hard hard Uk dub junglist vibes. These two releases are far far better,in my humble opinion, than the rather lame and cliched new Dilinjah release.

5-0 out of 5 stars jungle dub
The wickedest jungle rythems in the world!! If you like Smith and Mighty you'll love More Rockers. I'd give this album a million million trillion stars if I could...

5-0 out of 5 stars about more rockers
get it ! the ruffest jungle/dub sound you'll ever have heard. Nice dubby women vocals with killing beats give you the absolute summer feeling. Nothing for tech step freaks, nothing about indus, just a *(you know what I mean) and go! Even if your into reggae you should keep an ear on it.

But what the hell did they do to 'selection 1'?

p.s. more rockers=smith and mighty w. company, you'd compare their sound to the track 'same' on smith&mighty's "big world, small world" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sounds to set your mind free...
LTJ Bukem, handing out another great Earth Album. This one happened to be alot more jazzy I think. If anyone is reading this, trying to decide whether to buy it or not, if your a fan of downtempo jazzy music, with a pinch of d&b, you wont be disappointed. For those hardcore D&B Fan's this will also appeal to you, check out Blame's J-Walkin! This album is moody music, listen to it on a rainy day, or when your just chilling out. Personally I prefer to listen to it in the morning, its very peaceful and not harsh on my senses. Peace all...

4-0 out of 5 stars LTJ Bukem presents Earth Volume 2
Earth Volume 2 is a great album that mixes some aspects of jazz with drum and bass in quite a few of the tracks. It's an album to chill out to, and I especially like the first 3 tracks and the last 2, which experiment with phat bass lines and cool variations in the drum beats.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible
Haven't heard such a luscious combination of beats for quite a while. LTJ is a genious in this field. Check out his other stuff, especially Logical Progression I.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific sampling of the ever-evolving drum and bass genre
Lush, spacious, and groovy are just a few of the adjectives that I could use to describe this fantastic collection assembled by LTJ Bukem. Its varied bpms, timbres, and tonality have kept me listening to this disk non stop for about a month now, with no near end in sight. Of the countless Drum and Bass comps I've heard recently, this one definitely stands out. Volume 1 and Logical Progression are also definitely worth checking out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Looking rounded the box for round duex

4-0 out of 5 stars Disc 2 alone is worth the purchase.
If you like any of the Logical Progression series releases, you will certainly love Level 2 - the crew from GLO is notorious for their clean, rolling drum and bass sound and doesn't disappoint with this one. Unfortunately, I happen to love underground hip-hop as well as jungle/DNB, so the tired, early-eighties era lyrics and lackadaisical delivery of MC Conrad ruined the otherwise impeccable beats on disc 1 for me - a complaint I have for all Conrad/GLO tracks . Fortunately, disc 2, which is primarily instrumental, is one of the best sessions the crew has put out on CD thus far, with the exception of one exquisite track (dis)graced by Conrad flows. My opinion - buy Level 2 and listen to disc 2 while resting your cool drink on your new GLO coaster (disc 1).

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best drum'n'bass records ever.
this cd is by far one of my all time favorites, of both the ltj bukem stuff, my drum'n'bass cd's, electronica and hey, all my cd's.

it can be heard again and again and again. If you are just slightly into this kind of music you will like this one. Buy buy buy. Highly recommended. ... Read more
