Although the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City takes place in the 1980s, its musical accompaniment leaps light years beyond the simplistic plink-plonking found on that decade's primitive gaming systems. GTA's whopping seven-CD soundtrack set (also available as individual volumes) culls the best of the decade of decadence's musical offerings. V-Rock, and Wave 103 spotlight the '80s musical mainstays, hairsprayed heavy metal and bursts of fizzy New Wave electro-pop, while saccharine love songs and mellow light rock populate the next two discs: Emotion 98.3 and Flash FM, respectively.

Volume 5, the appropriately titled Wildstyle Pirate, celebrates the origins of hip-hop and DJ culture; Fever 105 focuses on sizzling soul;and Radio Espantoso rounds out the set with upbeat Cuban jazz hybrids. With such differing styles, not every disc will appeal to every listener. And not every CD is mixed well--Fever 105 can be monotonous, and Emotion 98.3's tunes are overplayed. However, the best part about GTA is its often surprising musical selections: Tears for Fears' morose "Pale Shelter," the long mix of Grandmaster Flash's "The Message," and Mary Jane Girls' slinky "All Night Long." Throwing in lesser-known musical gems among the hits adds spice and unexpected turns, which redeem GTA's shortcomings and make this set a treat for everyone, not just fans of the game.--Annie Zaleski ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Music Collection For A City That Never Sleeps!
I purchased this box set before I bought the game and I have not been disappointed especially with the Esperanto cd, the Cuban jazz and the New Wave cd with Adam First! The cd runs like you're listening to an actual radio station complete with commerical breaks, though the commercial breaks are not that frequent. You here more music! I was expecting some Phil Collins, at least one of his songs on the party cd with Toni but alas, no Phil. The cds don't have all the 80's big hits on them but enough to set an atmosphere while playing the game, afterall it's all about game, but I found myself listening to every cd, including the rock cd with Lazlow of people before he became that annoying talkshow host from GTA3. This boxset is a definite buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent soundtrack...
It's amazing that a video game has the depth to be able to offer a soundtrack which contains 7 CD's. But Vice City does have that soundtrack, and it is superb. If you are a fan of 80's music, or want to own a diverse collection of 80's music, get a copy of this soundtrack. The box set is the best deal, containing 7 CD's for a reasonable price. Even if you don't own or plan to buy the game, you will thoroughly enjoy this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just A Great Game, But A Great Soundtrack.
Despite the at times violent, yet comical game, Vice City has lots more on offer, a seven disc box set of all your favourite radio stations from the soothing Emotion 98.3, all the way through to the Spanish sounding Espantoso.

There's something for everyone since most genres are covered, 80's rock on play on VROCK and the origins of today's hip hop music scene on Mr Magic's Wildstyle Pirate Radio. RockStar certainly did it this time round with a great selection of 80's hits and surprisingly good unknowns.

Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Soundtrack
I do believe that this soundtrack may very well be one of the greatest soundtracks of our time. Some people may even die without this soundtrack, metaphorically speaking, of course. My hypothesis: Buy this baby to find your inner peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars SHAYLE HARRIS
I REALLY LIKED THE MUSIC BUT THERE IS ONE SONG I WANTED TO LISTEN TO BUT I COULDNT WHITCH WAS ROCKY BY AUSTIN ROBERTS,AS I WANTED TO KNOW IF IT WAS THE SAME SONG I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR,FOR AGES. THANK YOU SHAYLE

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice blend
How tacky are some of these songs? Well, I can remember hearing these songs being played at SEARS while shopping for clothes (no choice in those days. I lived in the suburbs and didn't yet have a car). The direct memories of denim jackets with sequins, and shorty tops - with sequins, fill me with shivers both warm (memories) and cold (fashion hell), as I listen to these songs. But not all of 'em are tacky. There are a couple of juicy goodies that actually broke the ground of riskless AM radio. "You Sexy Thing" was a hot crossover tune that got white people dancing (one could even say it was one of the first preludes to disco), and that title garnished many a sequined shorty top. Even many a pair of ..... (the seventies were SO fabulously sleazy!). And "Eighteen With A Bullet", despite it's slight '50sish Frankie Lymon feel, had a tight euphoric bite to it, which was a fresh charge in let's face it, what was a pretty stale, generic musical wasteland by the mid-seventies. Even Bay City Roller-mania was a delightful change, despite the fact that their fans all looked like Catholic school rejects (I guess that's where they got all that plaid). Come to think of it, maybe sequined shorty tops weren't so bad after all! Have fun -
and don't forget to have a nice day! :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Songs and Great Memories!
Oh great songs and great memories when I was only in elementary school and listening to these hits on the old KJR AM in Seattle! Great collections from Rhino!

3-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Rhino!
As a fan of Rhino Records for many years I was elated when they started this series years ago. This was the 70s collection with songs that you couldn't find on any other compilation - the quirky ones that you remember hearing on AM radio, had the 45 but wasn't on the "most popular" list. For example: Sky High by Jigsaw (which I remember hearing in 1975) and Convoy by C. W. McCall (which I had the 45 rpm of). This isn't my favorite volume of the series but nonetheless, a volume that should be in your collection.

Please note! The cassette versions are different from the CD release. There are "Bonus Tracks" on the CD that are not found on the cassette.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! The rest of the album's good too!!!
The first time I brought this album, I was only into the song "I'm Too Sexy". I was a young (17 Maybe), cocky kid who thought the song perfectly fit me. Out of sheer boredom one day, I decided to play the rest of the album while playing video games. I was absolutely intrigued by some of the big-band sounds in "Deeply Dippy", lulled into a peaceful state by the music behind "Swan", and just absolutely FELL IN LOVE with "Those Simple Things". The ENTIRE album is incredible. It's such an eclectic mix of sounds, that one can't help but enjoy the entire thing. Everyone that I know that's heard "I'm Too Sexy" just thinks that the song is silly, but I'm telling you, the album just has to be heard to be believed!!! I don't care what anyone else says about this album, this is one album that I'M NOT ASHAMED TO SAY THAT I LIKE AND I WILL DEFEND THIS ALBUM TO ANYONE WHO DOESN'T THINK THIS GROUP CAN PUT OUT A GOOD SONG OTHER THAN "I'M TOO SEXY"!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Silly novelty stuff
"I'm too sexy" was a funny novelty song for a while, until it got used in, oh, about a thousand ads and movies. If you can forget all of the media overkill, this "song" (actually, it's basically just the lead vocalist talking over a MOR dance beat) is still fun once in a while as a novelty song.

The rest of the album is nothing but filler.

1-0 out of 5 stars deeply dreadful
I can honestly say that Deeply Dippy remains my most loathed pop single of all time, with Don`t Talk Just Kiss a runner-up.
Deeply Dippy is a love song with no love, no heart, no soul, no sincerity. RSF are all camp, no substance. They hark back to the
vapid archness of Spandau & Human League yet manage to be EVEN WORSE!
With so much great music out there, why does anyone bother with stuff like this? One`s mind boggles.

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a picker-upper
While most girls will roll their eyes if you mention Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy" this song is straight up my alley. I, being a chick, love this song and coupled with everything else on this album, you just can't get enough of it. It rocks, pure and simple, to a tune and rhythm and attitude all it's own. Body image ain't everything but belt a little RSF and you are the sexiest person alive; even if it's only your cat that thinks so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shut up and listen...
There`s thousands of people in this world who gladly sang along to the hits from this album, and there`s a reason why - the music is good! Set aside 'I`m Too Sexy` and the girls favourite (so I`m told) `Deeply Dippy`, it`s STILL a great album. I guess you just need a great sense of fun to appreciate it. I like all sorts of music, ranging from the songs of Nick Cave to the beats of Erasure and after listening to `UP` a countless amounts of times I am yet to tire of it. It is a pop classic and no-one seems to make pop as bravely as Right Said Fred. Every song is perfectly crafted. Seriously, give it a chance - listen closely, open the bright side of your mind and enjoy! It`s brilliant. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Dance Floor Hits Disco Nights Vol. 8
The cover says, "Extended long play club versions!", but only 5 out of 12 songs are longer than 5 minutes. I've heard the album version of "Makin' It" (the reason why I bought this compilation) and this ain't it. The long version is at least 5 minutes and this is 3:08. This version of "Bridge over Troubled Water" is only 3:18, but the mix I already have is at least 9 minutes.

Save your money if you like long play.

4-0 out of 5 stars GOOD PERIOD PIECE
Maniac, Makin' It, San Francisco, Brazil, Can't Get Enough ..., Hot Stuff and She Works Hard ... were huge pop hits in the late 70s and early 80s, whilst Linda Clifford's version of the Simon & Garfunkel classic was an underground club hit and considered something of an outrage by musical snobs way back then. Thank God Its Friday was the theme song from the movie. So this compilation veers more to the pop side of disco but is very enjoyable and an excellent reminder of those good times.

3-0 out of 5 stars ROCKWELL IS THE ONLY GOOD THING!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

The liner notes that accompany this collection note that '70s soul music has never really gotten its due. One could argue that point for days, but hubris aside, there's no denying that Can You Dig It pays serious homage to the golden years of American soul. The new box set contains 6 CDs and 136 cuts, 65 of which hit the No. 1 spot on the R&B and/or pop charts. As you'd expect with a project that mines such a rich era (the CDs are compiled chronologically), it represents a who's who of stars. Among the notables: Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone, Curtis Mayfield, theSpinners, the O'Jays, the Staple Singers, James Brown, Chairmen of the Board, Laura Lee, Freda Payne, and Jean Knight. Lesser lights also get to shine, i.e., El Chicano, who deliver the salsafied hippie anthem "Tell Her She's Lovely." But let's be honest--the selling point is the hits, and from the uplifting "Ooh Child" to the sassy "Want Ads," if you grew up in the '70s (hands up), then these tracks are beloved. Sure, the hard-core fan will probably wish for more obscurities, and the exclusion of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, and George Clinton is troublesome, but anyone wanting an at-home jukebox loaded with classic R&B will certainly dig this. --Amy Linden ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Great 70's soul music collection
I love this cd box set, and I love the way it looks! Rhino has done a good job of capturing the look, sound, and feel of 70's soul music with this attractive six cd collection. I love how they made the outside of the box look like an old 8 track tape rack! And it's great to hear songs like Betcha By Golly Wow, I'll Be There, Rainy Night in Georgia, War, Didn't I Blow Your Mind This Time, Family Affair, Let's Stay Together, and so many others once again. I felt like it was 1973 all over again!

I do have one minor complaint: Over 20 of these songs are on another Rhino Box set that I have called "Have a Nice Decade." I felt a little cheated, that Rhino could have sampled some other songs. Moreover, there were some great soul artists that didn't have songs represented on this collection at all: Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, and a few others.

But this is still an excellent collection, and if you love 70's soul music, you might want to splurge and buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A top notch collection of 70's soul nuggets
This is the best box set I have shelled out for in quite some time, presenting an (almost) comprehensive collection of outstanding nuggets of 70's soul. Covering everything from the O'Jay's "Back Stabbers" through "Float On", by the Floaters, this is an outstanding soul collection in a perticulerly cool package. Dispite the omision of such artists as Stevie Wonder and the Jackson 5, if you have a deep need for top notch soul, this is virtually a one stop buy, instently giving you a great collection of amazing music.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rosetta Stone of 70's Soul!!
Let me just start by saying this is quite simply the greatest
compilation ever unleashed on man or beast. This is the most deluxe boxed set I have seen- 6 discs in an 8 track carrying case
style package. This will take you back to the days of shag carpets, lava lamps and monster size afro hairstyles. Classic 70's Soul is my favorite genre of music and to find such a lovingly compiled set just blew my mind. 136 of the very best cuts of this era including the obvious smash hits like "Cruising","Let's Stay Together", Mr. Big Stuff", I Wanna get Next to You" alongside lesser known or forgotten tracks like "I'm Doin Fine Now" by New York City, "Golden Touch" by Rose Royce.and "Why can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas. The set also comes with a beutiful 76 page booklet packed with photos, track by track commentary and artist bios. Obviously a package like this will set you back a bit financially but the fact that you will never stop playing this for the rest of your life makes it worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "8-track" box they come in is a real hoot!
This is a nice collection of some of the best R&B songs of the 70's. My cousin used to always watch "Soul Train" when we were growing up so these songs pleasantly remind me of my childhood and visiting with my beloved grandparents at the holidays.

The box the discs come in is also cleverly designed to look like it's filled with 8-track tapes. This would make a great gift for anyone who loves 70's soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth 10 Stars-They Sure Don't Make 'em Like This Anymore!!!
One of the very best, top of the line soul/r&b collections you could possibly own! Man oh man, do these classic tunes bring back so many fine memories! This type of talent as far as singing & songwriting is sorely lacking in today's music world. Today's youth should try giving this set a listen to hear what real talent was actually like. If you are a major fan of 70s soul/r&b like I am, then this is a MUST-HAVE collection. Very highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for finding hard to locate songs
I am a fan of this series as it often is the only place to find old school classics. Songs that were popular back in the day, but by either one-hit-wonders, or artists with out of print recordings. This CD is the only place I could find "Firestarter" by Tease, and "Sugar Free" by Juicy. I also enjoyed "Who Do You Love" by Bernard Wright and "Come into My Life" by Joyce Sims. This collection is from a day when slow jams were more than just the whining you hear on the radio today. There was rhythm, there was funk, there was soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars very smooth!!!!
A very nice selcetion of songs that are nice there is a song by Eugene Wilde who was popular in the 80's but he didn't get a lot of exposure who is a good singer he has a song on here called don't say no tonight and firestarter, I'm curious, Silver Shadow, Slow down and many other great songs and I would recommend anyone to buy this album I am almost finish with completing the whole collection of smooth grooves but this is a nice cd to add to your romance cds!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars JUST WONDERFUL!!!
THIS IS GREAT! WORDS JUST CAN'T EXPRESS MY EXCITMENT WHEN I FOUND THIS ALBUM. MOST OF THESE SONGS ARE ONES I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR SINCE FOREVER! I'D HEAR IT ON THE RADIO AND WONDER HOW I CAN FIND IT, NOW I HAVE

4-0 out of 5 stars Late-night afterhours dance jams galore!
An almost seamless compilation of slow jams and mid-tempo 1980s dance hits featuring Atlantic Staar, Juicy, Tease, Roger and Eugene Wilde among others. I did not give it a 5-star rating because Oddysey's "Inside Out" and Real To Reel's "Can You Treat Me Like She Does?" are way too uptempo for this CD but otherwise it's superb. Great cover photos also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Smooth Grooves
This is without doubt one of the finest in the Smooth Grooves series. A good mix of laid back soul (Juicy, Tease, Keni Burke) and smooth dancers (Bernard Wright, Odyssey, Atlantic Starr). Lots of the tracks here have had a hammering on my soul radio show, and feedback has been excellent. Do yourselves a favour, if you've not purchased this yet, don't waste time putting it on your wants list, get it now. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars BRONSKI BEAT AND THE TECHNOPOP
AGE OF CONSENT is basical to understand the eightis music and the new excitent movement of technopop-remakers as Felix Da Housecat, Ladytron or Chiks on Speed. Every song on this album sounds different, and that's not a god thing, but there are a really 2 or 3 themes as Smalltown boy or Junk.
Vey interesting for the new generation that discovers oldies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome stuff
Smalltown boy alone gives this album 5 stars. Way ahead of its time. It is a pity they didn't stick around together very long, because Bronski beat was Erasure before Erasure was cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hit That Perfect Beat, boys! 6 stars!
Straight female with a baby here, 30-something, and a smalltown girl. I got my first dose of Bronski Beat back in the days of the Montreaux Rock Festival (anyone remember?). I immediately bought it (cassette at the time). Jimmy Sommerville's stage presence and booming vocals blew me away. The man gives me goosebumps to this day! This album has, and always will be, one of my favorites. It is timeless. No two songs sound alike. If you like a blend of dance tunes (Why, Junk, I Feel Love), rhythmic, sensual groove tunes (Scream, my personal favorite, Love & Money, Need a Man Blues, Smalltwon Boy), and a few blues/jazz tunes like It Ain't Necessarily So and Heat, then this album is for you. It covers all the bases.....and well! Each song has an addictive and intoxicating hook. I Feel Love is a sure bet for someone new to Bronski Beat. Even conservative people will say "It's got a good beat...." Jimmy Sommerville and Marc Almond are a great pairing. Marcs bass voice compliments Jimmy Sommervilles awesome screaming soprano. They never miss a note. This was the first of many Broski Beat/Communards CD's but this one rises to the top effortlessly. If you only buy one CD by these guys, make this the one. But buy 2, you'll wear one out in the first year.

5-0 out of 5 stars This album will knock your socks off!
This is more than a re-issue of Bronski Beat's debut album, because some remixes taken from the Hundreds and Thousands LP and

Smalltown Boy is a poignant story about a young man leaving home and parents who can't understand homosexuality, whereas Why? is a HI-NRG rant against discrimination and hatred. Ain't Necessarily So is a brilliant re-working of the Gershwin classic, whereas the other, non-single tracks each have enough oomph in them to be singles. Junk sees Jimi using the lower end of his vocal range, and is comparable to Steinski & Mass Media's I'll Be Right Back (popular at the time). The best version of I Feel Love is of course the one with Marc Almond which is inspired in its incorporation of Donna Summer's Love To Love You Baby and John Leyton's Johnny Remember Me.

It would be easy to pigeonhole the Bronskis as a 'gay group' but there is much more to them than that. The superb musicianship of Steve Bronski and Larry Steinbacheck puts them in a class of their own in terms of 1980s synthesiser music, and the crunchy sounding square-waves still sound fresh nearly twenty years later. The lyrical sophistication and idiosyncratic singing of Jimi Somerville lifts this up above its contemporaries, telling a story that needed to be told and still holds up today. Mike Thorne's production also deserves a mention as he hits the right balance between vocal and instrumental prominence. The remixes are just superb, particularly Why, with its kettledrum solo being one of the best extended versions I have heard.

My only regret is that they didn't accept my offer to take over from Jimi when he left!

4-0 out of 5 stars Bronski Beat - a stepping stone in pop music for gays
Yes, the Village People were directly targeted as the first actual gay group because of their gay themed songs and homoerotic images, but the first actual "out and proud, and in your face about it" group was Bronski Beat; Jimmy, Steve and Larry. This remaster/reissue of their debut album AGE OF CONSENT is definitely a treat. As WHAT'S GOING ON by Marvin Gaye was a stepping stone for African-Americans, AGE OF CONSENT was the same type of anthem collection for gays everywhere. Dealing with issues of homophobia, growing up gay and family issues, discrimination, religion vs. the gay issue, gay love between young men and so much more, AGE OF CONSENT is THE recommended "coming out" album for every gay man. The haunting single "Smalltown Boy" deals with a young gay male growing up in a small town, and choosing to run away from home to be able to live his life and be himself. The single "Why?" basically deals with discrimination and the way people view gays. This reissue also also includes bonus remixes not available on the original version (but most appeared on the HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS album). With excellent dance beats provided by Larry and Steve, and the falsetto voice of Jimmy Somerville, AGE OF CONSENT is an 80's must-have and is worth more than dancable music; for those of you who are unfamiliar with gays and gay issues, listen to the words to a majority of these songs to better understand what you don't understand. This is a landmark album, but Jimmy left the group after this album was released and was replaced with new vocalist Jon John for the following 2 albums, and Jimmy formed a new group, The Communards. All of this definitely worth checking into. Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Let's just let the band jam for a while, " he said!
Barry White's Love Unlimited Orchestra, The Salsoul Orchestra, and M.F.S.B. provided the 1970's with some of the best dance music of the decade. The latter was responsible for providing the "background" instrumentation for Philadelphia-International hit-makers like The Three Degrees, Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, The O'Jays, Billy Paul, Archie Bell & the Drells, and countless others on the label. There were occasions when the band was allowed to come to the "foreground" and make the charts themselves. The group's "T.S.O.P (The Sound of Philadelphia)" became its biggest hit by virtue of the fact that it was the theme for the successful dance show, Soul Train.

This particular compilation displays the band's versatility as it tackles big band sounds, pop, jazz, and funk. While a couple of the tracks are dated, the remaining ones are as timeless as music can be. Compliments must be heaped upon original producers Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff, Bobby Martin, Vince Montana, and Jack Faith.

I just wondered why the folks at Motown never thought of showcasing their session musicians. They had one heckuva group themselves.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for the 70's, but now very dated!
If you blend disco, jazz and R&B music, you get "The Best of MFSB". While this music was quite hot and unique in the 1970's (from around 1973-1976) most of these tracks sound very dated and just plain boring today. Had their music been more influenced by jazz instead of disco, this CD probably would be a timeless treasure.

No one would argue that these were some of the most talented studio musicians around, providing that unique "Philly Sound" for such giants as the O'Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Billy Paul, Teddy, The Intruders, The Three Degrees and others, however the music they recorded under their own name just doesn't stand the test of time, in my opinion. I bought this CD for just one song - "My Mood", clearly the best track MFSB ever recorded. This is a classic that is mellow, jazzy and still sounds as great now as it did some 27 years ago.

Other notable tracks here include "Cheaper to Keep Her", "TLC" and of course the million-selling theme song from the longest running syndicated TV dance show Soul Train, "TSOP". "Smile Happy" isn't bad, but it is an unnecessary remake of the original version performed by the group War on their "Why Can't We Be Friends" album. MFSB's version of the song just doesn't do it any justice. Also, this CD is missing "Touch Me In The Morning", an instrumental version of Diana Ross's classic.

Except for the songs noted above, this CD is a collection of dated, lackluster disco-jazz music. I strongly recommend Leon Huff's "Here To Create Music" CD instead of this one. It has the MFSB musicians performing, but the songs are much more jazzy and timeless than these.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love is still the message
I have read most of the reviews and they all focus on TSOP (Soul Train Sound Track). Have you all forgotten Love is the Message. This is the ultimate dance record, what else is there to hustle to. No matter when or where I hear this song it invokes memories of happy times when I was about 11-12, 15-16, 20-38. This song unlike so many others has stood the test of time. The break when the song goes from a mellow jazz composition to a "this is my part!!" get up and dance beat that is unforgettable. While I agree that TSOP may have gotten more air play because of soul train, I truly believe more people recognize MFSB for their Love is the Message theme.

5-0 out of 5 stars These is instruments!!
Today's music is like the grammar I displayed in the title, W-R-O-N-G. You could not put this BAND in music today because they don't understand that this is music. That there are real fingers playing pieces of strings and metal. Not a big board with buttons. They are following marks on a paper that are called notes. Not looping a mindless beat. There is a melody and a bridge. Not sound effects in its place. This is by far the album. If you want to remember when you used to sneak in the basement and play your mom and dad's records this is the album. If you want to relive the times when you wake up on Saturday mornings and watch Fat Albert and then Soul Train this is the album. THIS IS THE ALBUM. Go ahead and give your children a real music memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take me back to the sound of Philly
This album takes me back to the days of my youth and listening to my dad's records. Now that I am older I can truly appreciate the genius of the ensemble know as MFSB. Most know of MFSB's work through their 'Sound of Philadelphia' disco orchestrations (The theme music for Soul Train is an example). The Best of MFSB definitely delivers that sound. If you want to feel like you are stuck right in the middle of a movie set from the 70s, this is the album for you. However, this band goes far beyond the lush strings and horns of the disco theme. Tracks like 'Something for Nothing' and 'Poinciana' stretch the limits of the 70s dance sound. ... Read more

If Car Wash looks and feels like a 97-minute music video, there's good reason for it. Lacking anything resembling a workable script, screenwriter Joel Schumacher (yes, him--funny how things don't change, isn't it?) enlisted Motown veteran Norman Whitfield to compose a batch of songs that would, in effect, "drive" the film. It's clear from the finished film that Schumacher never overcame his writer's block, but Whitfield more than met his end of the bargain, compiling a soundtrack that yielded three top 10 singles, and a musical oeuvre that Rose Royce is still milking to this day. Car Wash succeeds by way of its mass appeal. Whitfield forwent the parochial, if classic, Motown Sound, and incorporated elements of rock, disco, and blaxploitation-esque incidental music, resulting in a meaty--and marketable--party record. Whitfield casts Rose Royce as the new Sly and the Family Stone, and though they don't quite fill those shoes, it's a blast to hear them try. --Matt Hanks ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wanna get next to you
love this plus that movie still a fan this brings back good memories every song on here jams and mostly it's instrumentals but hey I'm an old school funk fan and plus original funkadelics eddie hazel, and billy bass nelson held the whole groove down that's why this soundtrack is helluva funkdafied fire a classic every song on here is a classic and far from disco which sadly is a category rose royce fell under in later years.

4-0 out of 5 stars will take you home
did you ever work a hard job for little pay? love someone you just couldn't reach? well this music comes from a film that will take you home. rose royce really hits t on the mark. my review is as much about the film car wash as it is the music. you may have to be over 40 to understand, but if you have ever been there, hated it, but wouoldn't trade the experience for any $$ this is the music and film for you

5-0 out of 5 stars In full bloom !
If you have ever seen the film Car Wash, you will remember the importance of the soundtrack. I personally saw the film again on T.V. not too long ago, and when I found this cd was available, I simply ordered it (I had bought a long time ago the LP version, which only had 10 tracks).

This can be counted as one of the great soundtracks of that era, together with others such as "Superfly", "Shaft" or "Saturday Night Fever". The more recent "Jackie Brown" goes in the same direction actually. But, the originality of this one is that the whole soundtrack was apparently recorded BEFORE the shooting of the film (the songs were really playing while the film was shot, and the actors seem to have the time of their life), and that the band was made up by Norman Whitfield especially for this recording. The songs were so great and the band was so successful that it went on to record more albums and competed on the charts with CHIC. In fact, I can tell you the film was shown everywhere in Europe and that "Car wash" and the ballad "I wanna get next to you" were played all over the world... Not bad for what some would call a low budget film with a made up band playing in the background.

This really is a recommendable cd because of the story behind it, because of the sound (typical of that time), and because you have more than the two star tracks ("Zig Zag" and "Water" are super instrumentals, "Yoyo" is a lot of fun, the Ohio Players like "Born to love you" should have gotten the same recognition as the title track, and the musical scene - "Daddy rich/you gotta believe"- with Richard Pryor and the Pointer Sisters is extraordinary).

Car wash, ladies and gentlemen, a must have from a band and a producer (Norman Whitfield) in full bloom at that time !

Amazon.com essential recording

There are many, many Andrew Lloyd Webber albums out there, including cut-and-paste compilations and songbooks from individual artists, most notably Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, and even Jose Carreras. The Premiere Collection is probably as authentic as you can get in a hits album, however. In addition to the most popular selections from the original casts of Evita, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar, the 57-minute album includes two selections from Tell Me on a Sunday (also recorded by Bernadette Peters as Song and Dance), the title tune from Starlight Express, the "Pie Jesu" from the Requiem, and a snippet from the Paganini Variations, thereby allowing you to hear the good stuff without having to spring for the complete albums. Note that the three selections from Phantom of the Opera are the 1986 pop singles instead of the cast recordings, meaning Steve Harley rather than Crawford sings with Brightman on the title tune and Cliff Richard subs for Steve Barton on "All I Ask of You." (Crawford does sing "The Music of the Night," of course.) This 1989 compilation was too early for Aspects of Love or Sunset Boulevard, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is ignored, but these omissions are rectified in the follow-up album The Premiere Collection Encore, and the American-slanted version, The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection. --David Horiuchi ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just The Best Of Broadway!
A wonderful collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals...Especially Phantom Of The Opera, Don't Cry For Me Argentina and Memory are great. You will never regret buying this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great collection, but...
I love Andrew Lloyd Webber as much as anyone and I know that there are people who will disagree, but I wasn't fond of all the singers on this CD. Julie Covington sang "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" with a lot of emotion, but her voice seemed to be suffering. Also, maybe it's just a different version, but "Mr. Mistofolees" seemed a little overdone. However, despite these two complaints, this CD is filled with classic songs and would be a good addition to any Broadway fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fair Album with 1 starlight and 0 aspects
I think this album is F-A-I-R because it has one starlight express song and zero aspects of love songs. This is why i liked the album The reason i said that this is a fair album is that I like Starlight Express better. Song i like are "The Phantom of the Opera", "Take That Look off Your Face", All I Ask of You", "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Mr. Mistofflees," "Superstar," "Memory", "Starlight Express", "Tell Me On A Sunday", "Music of the Night", "Another Suitcase in Another Hall", and "I Don't Know How To Love Him". I dislike the following songs:" Track 6" and the last one because the last one was hard to understand and track 6 is instrumental.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb collection
... It is a collection of the best of ALW's creative efforts, and a collection of great performances. Anyone who loves "Broadway" should have this disk in their collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD is wonderful!
This cd was given to me as a gift after I had first seen the magnificent Phantom of the Opera when I was twelve or so. Upon receiving it and playing it for the first time, I was hooked. The haunting change of lyrics in the romantic rock version of Phantom of the Opera, the pure, thrilling fear of a woman being cheated on in Take That Look Off Your Face, the chilling poignance of "Memory".... I love it all... This cd is brilliant - one of his best! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good, some bad and some ugly
Like most volumes in the "Have A Nice Day" series, Volume 23 is uneven, mixing good songs and not-so-good songs with some utter dreck to avoid at all costs. Examples of the "good" category include "I've Got The Music In Me," "Love Me," "Back When My Hair Was Short" (Some people might disagree with me on this one, but I've always liked this song's tongue-in-cheek nostalgia) and "Amie". Rhino has taken some flak for including an edited version of "Amie" on this set, but this is the exact same edit people got when they bought the 45. "Oldies" radio only plays the full-length album version nowadays, which exacerbates the problem.

In the "not-so-good" category, we have "Hocus Pocus" (surely, one of the most bizarre songs ever to crack the top-10), "Never My Love" (okay on its own terms, but an embarrassment when compared to the Association's version), "Love Really Hurts Without You" (a lackluster early Billy Ocean effort) and "Tubular Bells". I really like the full-length version of "Tubular Bells," which clocks in at 25 minutes and could never be included here, but the version Rhino HAS included here suffers from some very choppy editing and, unfortunately, is not the TRUE 45 version.

In the "utter dreck" category, we have a good argument in favor of keeping actors FAR away from recording studios: "Let Her In," as sung (?) by John Travolta. Frankly, I'd rather listen to "Feelings" on a continuous loop than have to listen to this song once.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Fun
Super Hits of the 70's, Volume 23 is an excellent collection made up of some fun songs. The album opens with two instrumentals, the goofy "Hocus Pocus" by Focus that has some strangle yodeling on it and the super creepy "Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield which served as the theme for The Exorcist. The Kiki Dee Band's "I've Got The Music In Me" shows off Ms. Dee's impressive pipes, Blue Swede do a credible cover of The Association's "Never My Love", Pure Prairie League's "Amie" is one of the best country-rock songs of all-time, The Sweet's "Fox On The Run" is a great glam-rocker, John Travolta scored a top ten hit with his easy moving "Let Her In", Yvonne Elliman's pre-Saturday Night Fever "Love Me" is a nice surprise and Billy Ocean's first hit in America "Love Really Hurts Without You" doesn't really show the catchiness of 80's hits.

2-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst "must have" albums in existence
The entire "Have a Nice Day" series is comprised essentially of one hit wonders. With the butcher job done on "Amie", this disc is a one-hit wonder as well, but what a one. The hair-raising, eerie sounds of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" (theme from The Exorcist) have never been duplicated, and that one cut makes this disc worth having. Yvonne Elliman's "Love Me" adds a little support, but that's about it.

Rhino was definitely on the downhill slope with Volume 23, but it's still a decent value and worth the purchase price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hits and Misses
An awfully edited version of the classic "Amie" by Pure Prairie League is a blot on this CD that taints the rest of the collection. "Back When My Hair Was Short," a Weird Al soundalike by Gunhill Road, barely made the top 40, and Billy Ocean's first American hit "Love Really Hurts Without You" is out of place. Many of the hits here can be found elsewhere. All original versions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Get the Import
Brenda Russell is a great singer/songwriter. This is her "Best of..." collection. They have a US version but it omit's a very good song, (I can't remember the name of it, the lyrics are "...better get a grip and get it on..."), that one should have if you are going to get her greatest hits.

If you like or study singer/songwriter's, Brenda Russell should not be missed. Particularly since some of her songs have been re-recorded by some well known artist. Example: "Get Here." Oleta Adams recorded this one and it turned out to be a winner for her.

5-0 out of 5 stars "So Good So Right!"
This is a fabulous collection of soft melodic soul music from Brenda Russell's solo albums from 1979 through 1990. Brenda is an incredible talent that has unfortunately been for the most part overlooked. Her songs have been recorded by such talented performers as Luther Vandross, Joe Cocker, and Oleta Adams...to name a select few.

On the collection of 10 songs, there are two chart highlights. Her signature song is the exquisite top 10 "Piano In The Dark," which initially graces the collection. This a modern adult contemporary classic with Brenda's signature sultry vocals and features addtional vocals from Joe Esposito. It peaked at #6 on the charts in 1988 and earned Brenda a grammy nomination for best vocal performance, female. It is a timeless ballad that still graces many easy listening radio stations, even to this day.

The other major pop chart hit was her first chart song, "So Good, So Right" (#30) released from her 1979 self titled debut collection. The song has simple, spare arrangements which was reflective of the nature of her first album. Also represented from that album is the tender, "If Only For One Night" and the melodic, yet mediocre track "Way Back Then."

The title track to her 1990 set, "Kiss Me With The Wind," serves as a beautiful, feel good, and upbeat love song. Also included is the classic "Stop Running Away," a song that addresses domestic violence. On "Dinner With Gershwin," she playfully woos her mate indicating that his company is just as important than the company of many icons in our culture. Donna Summer recorded this for her "All Systems Go" album in 1985 and it was a minor chart hit for Summer.

"Get Here" is the title track that hightlights Brenda's wistful, seductive vocals as she urges her lover to return to her after a long time of being apart. This is one of her greatest songwriting accomplishments which was given a robust vocal interpretation from ex-Tears For Fears collaborator and diva Oleta Adams on her 1990 debut "Circle Of One." It was a solid chart hit for Adams peaking at #5 and earning Adams a grammy nomination as well.

The gorgeous, "Le Restaurant" is a consummate closer to this beautifully collection of well-crafted songs. It features David Sanborn on saxaphone. This is a tasteful mood piece that should have been a hit, but surprisingly wasn't released to the massses.

In her 2 decades in the music business, Brenda Russell has endured as a singer/songwriter crafting a series of quiet melodic classics. If you like light, middle of the road, catchy pop and soul music with a heir of elegance and style, the CD is a pleasant listening experience that is highly recommended.

My only criticism with the collection is its length. It is only about 40 minutes long. The colection only highlights 3 of Brenda's albums over an 11 year time period. I believe there are 2 others (the titles escape me at the present moment) that are out of print, which could have been represented here to make the collection more complete.

There are several omissions that would have enhanced the collection even more. "Gravity," was a minor chart hit from the "Get Here" collection that is missing. She also recorded several other projects: a duet with Al Jarreau "The Body Song" on a collection of socially conscious songs called "People," and a beautiful duet with Oleta Adams "Love Will Find A Way," which appears on the soundtrack to the Whoopi Goldberg film "Corina, Corina."

This compilation was a bit premature. In 1993, she released a very good collection of songs called "Soul Talkin'" that is well worth the bargin bin price! On that album, she expands her range and sings many upbeat tunes and lovely ballads about love and the perservation of the planet. Among its highlights are "Matters Of The Heart," "No Time For Time," "You'll Fall In Love Again," and "Who Are You" (a duet with Bobby Caldwell). This album is worth searching for.

For those who wish to keep up to date with Brenda, her current album is called "Paris Rain"(2000) which has been heralded as her most mature and sophisticated set that has international feel to it touching on many genres: adult comtemporary pop, rhythm and blues, torch, with a touch of jazz thrown in for good measure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Grammy Nominated Singer Songwriter from Hamilton, Canada!!

BRENDA RUSSELL FEATURING JOE ESPOSITO

Whoever hears the musical richness of Brenda's GREATEST HITS is absolutely amazed how true she stays to her own evolutionary path and how much SOUL this record has!!

5-0 out of 5 stars True classic soul!
Do you like Classic Soul music? If so, then you need to add Black Ivory to your collection. They didn't have many hits, but the ones that they did have are on this cd.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful...
Russell should have become a huge star. Her songs simple yet beautiful constructs filled with grace, passion and genuine soul. Think of the hits others have had with cuts like "Get Here" (Oleta Adams), "Dinner With Gershwin" (Donna Summer) or her very first success, 1978's "So Good, So Right" (which Joe Cocker covered admirably on Sheffield Steel). Her originals are far more rewarding, her voice lithe and supple, the arrangements cultured and tasteful. Yep, that's her playing the keyboards as well! This collection is a great find for pop fiends and remains a recommended way to get into Russell's magic easily and effortlessly. Exceptional soul music from the eighties... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some of T.K.'s lesser-known disco hits.
Based in Miami, T.K. Records was one of the most important disco labels from 1975-81. The Miami disco sound was more energetic and robust than that of New York, Chicago and Los Angeles (it also had a more tropical feel). This is a great party CD- disco, however, was a type of music that more often than not lacked soul, emotion and substance and most of these songs are no exception.

4-0 out of 5 stars less well-known disco classics
A nice collection of tracks for anyone who's looking for the not so obvious disco of the 70's. The cd contains funky disco like 'Blackwater Gold', more 'cheesy' stuff like 'Come Into My Heart', and tracks as 'Dance To The Drummer's Beat', that nowadays are mostly known by its breaks used in hiphop. More than enough to keep you locked in the groove. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You need this!
This is a superb collection of full-length disco classics - none of your disappointing radio edits and definitely none of the usual rubbish that appears on every other second-rate collection. Stunning! Why didn't they make this a series - or would that have been tempting fate?

4-0 out of 5 stars I love Disco!
I just received this CD yesterday and have been playing it since. The cuts I like the best are "Do Your Dance" by Rose Royce (a full 9:17 minutes), "I Caught Your Act" by Hues Corporation (4:31 minutes), "Dancer" by Gino Soccio (8:28 minutes), and "Forbidden Love" by Madleen Kane (8:24 minutes). "Victim" and "I Found A Cure," also favorites, I already owned on different CD's. "Whistle Bump" is growing on me as well as "Hollywood." I don't remember hearing "Night Rider" before, but it's an Ok song. This CD is definitely worth owning. All songs were originally released in years 1977, '78 or '79.

4-0 out of 5 stars awesome compilation
this cd is a great compilation of hard to find songs in their full 12 inch versions with one exception. love deluxe's here comes that sound again is really a 16 minute song thats cut down to under 9 min. granted your not losing anything musically with the same chorus being sung over and over on the last 7 minutes of the song, but it is somthing you should know if your into just the 12 inch versions like i am.but dont pass this cd up for that because the 12 inch version is practically non existant,i bought my on bootleg some 15 years ago. as far as the other songs go you cant go wrong with victim, i caught your act (which is about 25 seconds longer than my 12 inch vinyl copy),found a cure, dancer, and one of my all time favorites forbidden love.which is even longer than madleen kane's 12 inches and more album by 3 minutes. and a pleasant surprise was night rider, a song i totally forgot about. thats the sign of a great compilation. i know you will enjoy this cd as much as i will.

4-0 out of 5 stars A TOP-NOTCH COMBINATION OF DISCO CLASSICS!!
I have to say that this is the best combination of 70's jams by far!Other cds had songs that were too common and commercialized exp:(I will survive and Don't leave me this way).I like those songs too but it's nothing like listening to a song that's rare & treasurable that you wish that you can turn back the hands of time! Most of all, this cd plays the original versions and with NO CUTS/EDITS!The combination of raw, funk and euro disco is what compelled me to add this to my collection."VICTIM & FOUND A CURE" is indeed good dance hits but TOO COMMON!My favorites are the funky and raw "HERE COMES THAT SOUND AGAIN" fun & bubbly "I CAUGHT YOUR ACT" and rare and instrumental "WHISTLE BUMP"!!Plus there is the entrancing/pulsating "DANCER" sophisticated euro- disco "FORBIDDEN LOVE" and the smooth & swingy sounds of "NIGHT RIDER"!!"HOLLYWOOD is a likeable upbeat tune that had to grow on me and I didn't like "DO YOUR DANCE"(Rose Royce).Once again if you're looking to purchase a disco combination with rare and bona-fide get off your seat dancehits, I highly recommend "CLUB FLOOR CLASSICS THE 70'S! YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED !!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars dancefloor thrillers
A great collection of 'oldskool' disco. The tracks are at maximum lenght and this serves the cd-title right. I can't imagine a party where people would escape the dancefloor when this cd is on. The music varies from the - little over the top - string arrangements of Love Deluxes' Here comes that sound again, funky disco like Asford & Simpson or Rose Royce, to trancy tracks like Gino Soccio' Dancer. Definitely a better collection than the standard disco compilations: you got the full 12 inch versions and less too well-known tracks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sept. 2003 - COME AS YOU ARE - A&S
This is a great CD, however, there's one album in particular that I have been looking for since it came out in 1976 -- 'Come As You Are', which contains the song "It'll Come, It'll Come, It'll Come." It's been out of print for so long. Can anyone tell me where I can get a copy from, please.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some Great Nick and Val
Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson know how to write music. From their early Motown hits, to their work with Chaka Khan, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight and many others, they have written and produced some of the choicest soul music of the last 35 years. Unfortunately, they never seem to get the recognition for their self recorded/produced music that they have received for their work with others. This set goes a long way to showcasing how extremely talented the couple is as a duo.
A&S hit their peak as recording artists with a series of mid-70's albums on Warner Brothers Records, and that makes up the bulk of this set. To me, "It Seems To Hang On" is their single greatest moment in the studio, and listening to this tune is bliss, indeed. Sweeping strings, a wonderful base line and intelligent lyrics sung by two people who are clearly in love with each other make for an epic moment.
Also from the Warner years, the beautiful ballad "Is It Still Good To You" is a beauty of a duet - its lyrics reflect the level of commmitment in a relationship that has gone on for years, and Nick's strong vocals here are a real pleasure. "Street Corner" is another r&b radio staple that sounds great - unfortunately this album uses the single version, rather than presenting the entire "Street Corner Symphony".
Many fans will appreciate that "Solid", A&S's biggest hit from their years recording for Capitol is here - it's a good song, but for my ears, I would have preferred the inclusion of "Babies".
Another unfortunate exclusion is "Stay Free", a beautiful song from the mid-seveties. But it is more than made up for by the inclusion of Quincy Jones's "Stuff Like That", which features Nick, Val and Chaka Khan in what was their only joint recording appearance - these three could have done some great stuff together, given the opportunity (especially when one considers that Nick and Val wrote two of Chaka's biggest solo hits, I'm Every Woman and Clouds).
A great collection, but since it doesn't include "Babies" and "Stay Free", I can't give it a perfect score.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Hits Collection, But There's More Where This Came From
If you just want a nice collection of some of the greatest hits, this collection does a nice job of giving you just that...

The duo has started their own record label and have re-released two of their rare Warner Brothers albums on cd (avalible on cd for the first time ever). The releases include their very first album for Warner Brothers titled "Gimme Something Real" and their last Warner's album "Performance" which was a live recording with additional studio material. Both cds include the original art work, and could easily be considered collectors items. Once again, if you want the hits, check this cd out, and if you want more be sure to stop by the duo's official web site.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Songs
Ashford&Simpson are kinda taken for granted because they have written so many great songs&rarely get half there due.this Set Highlights many of there Solo Jams that still sound as fresh now as the time they were released."Solid" is still a Cut that can light up a dance floor same with "Street Corner".there voices also blend well together.this is a Happening set.

EVERY TIME I SEE ALICIA I KNOW IM SEEING VALERIE. MAYBE TONITES R AND R HALL OF FAME WILL END MY ENDLESS FRUSTRATION WITH THIS HIGHLY UNDERRATED DUO. I SWEAR I SAW THEM ON THE PROMO..? 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD
First a disclaimer: my brother, Billy Goodrum, has a song on this album. But I feel confident saying I would give this a positive review if he were not. (And I've often told him his song here "We Should Always Be Together", is the one of his I'm most sure I would like if he were not my brother...it is truly gorgeous.)

That out of the way, this is a really fun CD to own. The selections range from get-down-and boogie ("Surely" and Miss Fabulous") to the haunting ("This Perfect World", "We Should Always Be Together") to the cheesy ("Disco Inferno"). Not to mention tried and true rock journeymen such as Blues Traveler and Todd Rundgren. It's pretty safe to say that if you can't find anything you like on this CD, it's because you don't like music.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kingpin soundtrack is a pleasant surprise.
With the exception of Oh LA La La,etc. every song is great, especially Surely, I Love You. Very good easy listening tape and cute movie too.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST SOUNDTRACKS EVER!
I just LOVE this CD- it's a really great collection of songs! My favorites are "Surely (I love you)" and "I Saw the Light". I also like the classics like "Disco Inferno" and the folk/rock "But Anyway". You should buy this CD right now because you won't be able to take it out of your CD player! It's GREAT!

5-0 out of 5 stars fun cd
this is my all time fun cd, i loved the movie then bought the ST thinking it would contain Freedy's Bad reputation, but when i found out that the song on the cd is completely different i was a bit disappointed until i heard the cd very well & it's worth every single penny, really cool. If you like the soundtracks of "there's something about mary", "dumb and dumber" then this is it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT CD WITH A VARIETY OF MUSIC!!!
I bought this Cd after seeing the movie and absolutely loving the music!! The songs by Blues Traveler and Colin James and the Little Big Band are so fun and great songs to sing along with or dance to. The best part of the soundtrack are the classic songs by Todd Rundgren and The Tramps. You can't get any better than Disco Inferno!!! ... Read more
