The soundtrack to the best movie ever made about strippers nods to the second-best, with a new version of Irene Cara's theme song from Flashdance, and to another famous cinematic striptease, with Tom Jones's cover of "You Can Leave Your Hat On." The bulk of the score, though, consists of songs that are more or less real-world stripper classics. It's hard to hear Hot Chocolate full blast and not bump and grind at least a little. Trivia note: Anne Dudley, who wrote the movie's incidental music (two pieces are included here), used to be in the Art of Noise.--Douglas Wolk ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get up and dance!
If you loved the movie, you'll love the soundtrack. I play this one in my car on a regular basis. It's a great mixture of dance songs and they also bring alive some memories of great scenes in the film. You just can't sit still while this one is on. Once you've seen the movie, can you EVER hear Donna Summer singing "Hot Stuff" and not see the guys in the unemployment line? Buy it, you'll like it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Full Monty Review
"The Full Monty," is the soundtrack to a movie of five men who are in need of money. Hey, what better way to make money than by simply STRIPPING?. That's basically the theme and the style of the music on the CD. Great! It is the perfect party CD, because the beats are fast and the lyrics become stuck in your head straight away. My favorite song on the CD is "You sexy thing" by Hot Chocolate, but there are many other cool songs on the CD. I highly recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars This soundtrack is "Hot Stuff".
The truth is, this is a great disc to have if it's your favorite movie, or if you just really love to strip. Most of these tracks are well known, and each one is more fun to dance to than the last. There's a few oddballs here, but most of it's oldies/disco era tunes, and all likely to put a smile on your face, and a jump in your step. My favorites are "You Sexy Thing", "Land Of 1000 Dances", and "Rock N' Roll, Part 2". Of Course it's hard not to like "Hot Stuff" and the "Flashdance" tracks too. After this, all you need is a good stereo and a stripper's pole.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great movie deserves a great soundtrack
With a mix of rock and roll types from the 70's to the 80's, one can't help but like The Full Monty soundtrack. The original songs written for the movie are also wonderfully unique in their sound. And, with titles like "The Lunch Box Has Landed" how can one go wrong?! =) (The song is actually quite good). Though the redo of "Leave Your Hat On" isn't quite as good as the original, it does have a nice flair to it. A feel-good compilation! =)

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun, up-beat album
A great mix of classic songs like "You Sexy Thing" by Hot Chocolate, and a great remake of "You can leave your hat on" by Tom Jones. There are also 2 tracks that are from the original score, composed by Anne Dudley. This is an album that will make you wanna get up and dance, with it's semi-camp 70's disco songs, and the final song may even get you to doing your own version of The Full Monty. Just make sure that the curtains are closed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice mix from funk
A lot of good tracks here. Sounds like an hour from commerical free radio on the night your favorite DJ is spinning the records. Put it on and close your eyes. You'll think you've traveled back in time.

5-0 out of 5 stars I know what I like
A lot of the other reviewers have blasted this CD because it is not a true funk compilation. Well, maybe so. I don't know. I'm not a connoisseur of the art form. All I know is that I enjoyed the hell out of these songs (with the exception of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust," which I could happily live the rest of my life without hearing again). I was exclusively into metal when these songs came around the first time, so it's a pleasure to be exposed to so many great pop songs that I was only dimly aware of, if I had heard them at all.

1-0 out of 5 stars Soft and commercial
Seems like they sold too many of the first volume, and have produced a second just to try to rake in a little more. Hardly any of the tracks on this album are funk, and as for Queen being the opener... it speaks for itself. To me, funk is typified by an active bass line, compelling beat and sharp guitar or brass; any or all of these are lacking on most of the tracks here. What you get instead is a collection of slothful, disparate songs, hardly conducive to dancing. Save your money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not FUNK!!!
This is, in no way, shape or form, funk!!! I mean, how the hell is "Another One Bites The Dust" funk?! My God!!! This is sure as hell not "Pure Funk", this is soft, white funk!!! (...)

2-0 out of 5 stars pure non funk 2
funk is that kinda vibe you eat hotwings and groove at fish fries funk is when you come out of church's chicken jamming, sorry but half this cd is not funk, d train is bubblegum pop, gap band outstanding is not funky enough, but hits, why is queen on here they was not a funk group, the whispers no way hose, carl carlton's she's a bad mama jama is not a funk classic, i always said these funk compilations does the artists injustice, if you wanna learn what funk is check out the original recordings well i'll list a few, the entire catalog, and entourage of james brown, parliament-funkadelic, sly stone, larry graham, bootsy collins, barkays, ohio players, chaka khan and rufus, cameo, curtis mayfield, mandrill, earth, wind fire, war, the list is endless. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Solid Set
I think this is a Cool overall set&covers alot of 80's Jams!! but I don't think that every Act here should have a Long Version.but the Jams that stood out truly only get stronger here.you will enjoy the Bumps&Grooves here.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you were in high school during the 80's....
My younger brother bought this one. I took a listen and while many of the tracks I relish from the 80's, a good number of the remaining ones suffered from the "extended" versions featured on this compilation.

The longer/remixed versions of Blondie's "Rapture", Rick James's "Super Freak", "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" (The Gap Band) and "Rock Steady" by The Whispers are welcome jams that are timeless.

However, cuts like "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" (Indee), "Ain't Nothing Going on But the Rent" (Gwen Guthrie), "The Show" by Doug E. Fresh and a few others had their "moment in the sun" in that decade and were more appreciated by my sibling's 30-something-year-old ears than my slightly more "mature and refined" late 40's-year-old ones.

What a difference a decade and a half makes! Sheesh! ... Read more

The second in the Hip-O imprint's series of '80s box sets, this three-CD compilation collects 42 hits from the decade of decadence. For those who want to shake their booty, they can get their freak on to Rick James, "Jump" for the Pointer Sisters, and do a little "Safety Dance" to Men Without Hats. Love new wave? Indulge in Flock of Seagulls, Duran Duran, Devo, and Adam Ant. And for those who want to rock--although not too hard--there's Billy Idol, the Pretenders, Rick Springfield, and Scandal. Yes, many of these cuts are predictable, but there are some surprise entries, like Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me," Greg Kihn's "Jeopardy," Peter Schilling's "Major Tom," and Jan Hammer's "Miami Vice Theme"(!).Given this set's diverse artist roster, it's doubtful that you'll love every song; and, truthfully, the third disc is weaker than the others. But as a throwback for the music-video generation, Hit Me with Your '80s Box! makes a hip retro compilation that may finally get pop-culture snobs to admit that they liked many of these songs a lot more than they were willing to let on back in the day. --Bryan Reesman ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection, But ...
This is a great collection of awesome 80's music, but I feel that each disc should have had about three more songs on them. Also, I think the title refers to Pat Benatar's HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT. Strangely enough, the song is nowhere to be found on this set???

3-0 out of 5 stars I don't understand...
...Why does this box set not contain the very song its title is a reference to? If it were to be truly complete, it would contain: HIT ME WITH YOUR RHYTHM STICK, by Ian Dury & The Blockheads.

4-0 out of 5 stars Huge collection of 80s hits
Some of them, I am so tired of hearing, and others I'd love to hear again! Nice mix

4-0 out of 5 stars A great by for Any fan on Eighties Music
Hit me with your 80's box is great box set for anyone who likes eighties music. While it not as good as "Like, Omigod:The 80's pop culture box" It still will take the listener back to a great time in the music industry.

Amazon.com essential recording

Cher's recording career has long taken a back seat to her acting pursuits, but with Believe she's back with a vengeance as a throbbing disco diva. Although no fewer than five producers with dance pedigrees are along for the project (including Todd Terry, Junior Vasquez of Madonna fame, and Rob Dickins, who helped resurrect Rod Stewart's ailing career), this is by no means a dance album in the '90s trip-hop sense of the term. Rather, it's a tour de force that summons mid-'70s images of strobe-lighted dance floors, sequined miniskirts, and writhing bodies. In "Power," Cher wails, "Ain't nothing changed much through the years." Not a bad thing in this case, since Cher's star was still rising in the steamy '70s and '80s with a string of hits that included the disco gem "Take Me Home" and the haunting "If I Could Turn Back Time." Although not blessed with much vocal range, Cher knows how to work a song with her trademark sultry, slightly ironic delivery. And she's certainly in fine form on the masterful title track, which is marred only by the intrusive, anachronistic wah-wah vocal effect. --Jaan Uhelszki ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta hand it to you, Cher... you rock!
Make it 4 1/2 stars. I don't own the album (yet) but one of my friends owns it and I listened to it on New Year's Eve. Never before has Cher sounded so good. The exuberant, throbbing dance beats on this album suit her powerful voice very well. Songs like "All Or Nothing," "Believe," and especially "The Power" (which was originally recorded by another of my favorite singers, Amy Grant) are meant to be belted by someone like Cher. Almost any cut on this album would have made a great single. This album is evidence that Cher isn't ready to bow out gracefully yet. How a 53-year-old can still sound so hip is amazing. The one cut I didn't really like was "Taxi Taxi." Also, the remix of "We All Sleep Alone" is cool, but I wish she'd recorded new vocals for it instead of simply remixing her original vocals from 1987 (the original was a #14 hit in 1988 from her self-titled Cher album on Geffen). In addition, Cher's version of "The Power" uses the same backing vocals and instrumental track as the original Amy Grant version from 1994, which made her version sound a little fake, even though Cher's performance is, as always, flawless. Those are the only iffy parts of an otherwise EXCELLENT album. "All Or Nothing" is without a doubt my favorite on this album, though I do own the single for "Believe." CHER ROCKS!

4-0 out of 5 stars Believe In Cher
Cher made a huge comeback in late 1998 with BELIEVE, a song that made her comeback a success. This album dabbles mostly in electronica, which was very successful and a formula she again used on her 2002 album LIVING PROOF. The title track and hit single is an inspiring song about picking yourself up after failed chances. The rest of the album is pretty good too. "All Or Nothing" should have been a huge hit, its the highlight of the album. "Runaway" is another strong suit, should have been a single. She remakes her 80's classic "We All Sleep Alone" on here with an updated sound, excellent track. "Strong Enough" was the second single and basically has a similar theme to "Believe". Ohter highlights include "Love Is The Groove" and "Dov'e L'Amore". The only songs I didn't care for and felt were more bside quality were "The Power" and "Taxi Taxi". Cher may have comeback with this album, but I always felt her 1995 album ITS A MANS WORLD should have done that, as I feel its better than this album, but still check this one out nonetheless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Believe
Believe is a pretty good album. The singing is awesome; but the lyrics are pretty stupid and inane. She has never been good lyricist and that is pretty evident on this album. Even though this is true it is a good album.

4-0 out of 5 stars It took Believe to get her back on top again!
This is a good album by Cher! I think that she got tired of singing midtempo rock songs and wanted to get back to dancing again. I like the electronica direction she takes on this album. It's made Brian Rawling and Mark Taylor far more received now with their rumbling dance songs on her album and others. Runaway, Believe, All or Nothing and the other offerings are quite different. The least favorite song I don't care too much is "Taking Back My Heart." It kind of drags a bit and doesn't fit well into the album. I like Taxi Taxi as well. Another song that stands out is her dance version of her '87 song "We All Sleep Alone." It takes a more disco direction this time as opposed to the Bon Jovi-based power ballad sound of before, and it has me dancing to it every time! I have listened to her later album "Living Proof" more, but "Believe" is such a fabulous effort from her--she sounds more confident on this one than past efforts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best album of Chers career
After several not well recieved albums from Cher she finally hits the mark. She melded great with Rock in the 80's and came back to dance music at the end of the 1990's! What can I say, every song on this album is a gem. A few I didn't like a first but they grew on me and now I love em.

Her follow up album, Living Proof, was created with the same writers and producers but lost a lot of the magic this album had unfortunately.

For Cher fans this is probably the best album of her career. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars What? No "Hot Chid in the City"
Okay I haven't yet purchased this soundtrack but I was amazed that many songs I thought would be included in this, weren't. For instance, the divine episode of "Hot Child in THe City"...that was a classic! How about that one tune, that lead Carrie down the cat walk? And the Sade song in the episode where Sam slow dances with Richard. I am utterly amazed that some songs were overlooked. I would have bought four copies if those songs were included. I'm dissappointed. I'm sure there is a good excuse as it why many songs were cut from the final product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Disco
Sylvester, just one word described the style and energy of an era. Just as he was about to cross over to the "mainstream" , we lost him. One of the most talented and entertaining men of his time. This package starts with his "Fantasy" label, to the end, with the much loved "Megatone" label. I was never that pleased with his covers on "Menergy" etc, But loved Patrick Cowley (his last producer). My only complaint: the beautiful "You Are My Friend" was missing from this disc.It was taken from his last LP. Not a dance track, but an intense song about meeting people. My fav. has to be with where it all started, Stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST HITS

5-0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC DISCO!!!!
THIS IS ANOTHER CD THAT IS GREAT FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER HEARD OF SYLVESTER, BUT LIKES DISCO. THIS CD IS PACKED BUT TRUE DANCE CLASSICS, WITH SONGS LIKE "DISCO HEAT", "ROCK THE BOX", "MENERGY BY PATRICK COWLEY", "DO YOU WANNA FUNK", "DONT STOP", AND "STARS". THIS CD IS VERY SOULFUL, WITH THE DRIVING ELECTRONIC BEAT AND VOCALS BY SYLVESTER THIS CD WILL GET YOU DANCING. BUY THIS IF YOU LIKE HI-NRG/DISCO MUSIC!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars SOULFUL DISCO
This is the most delectable, passionate disco music, better than 90% of today's House. Sylvester has a wonderful falsetto voice that is carried along on the most infectious dance beats. In the late 70s he was as popular as Donna Summer and ruled the dance charts. My faves here include Dance (Disco Heat), You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real), Do You Wanna Funk, Band Of Gold, Stars and I Who Have Nothing. Very melodic, hypnotic music that works well for home listening and on the dancefloor.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great mix of hits from 1979
I was 10 years old in 1979, and I remember listening to a lot of these songs on the radio, especially "Escape"(Pina Colada Song). It was one of my favorite songs back then.
This greatly eclectic mix of genres will bring back some great memories of a year that spurned some great music.
Disco was fading, but Blondie got her hooks into it with "Heart of Glass", which starts this disc off right.
"My Sharona", the one hit wonder of The Knack is on here, along with a few 70's party standards for fast dances, "I will survive", "YMCA", and "Ring my bell".
The slower songs are sad love songs: "Just when I needed you most" and "Sad Eyes".
This is fun album to have on and sing along with(karoake here i come...)in the car, or at home in the background at a party.
I've actually recognized it being played at clubs, between bands.
I am highly recommending this for 70's music fans! It's one of the greatest if not the best compliation album I've heard for that decade.

5-0 out of 5 stars DISCO, COUNTRY AND BEAUTIFUL BALLADS
This excellent compilation contains four massive disco smashes, one stunning piece of power pop, three soulful ballads and one great country story song. The heavy presence of disco is to be expected since this dance style still rules the charts in 1979. I Will Survive and Y.M.C.A. became ageless club anthems, Ring My Bell is famous for its atmospheric syndrum effects and Heart Of Glass crossed the boundaries between new wave and disco in a big way. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) was a novelty hit and it still irritates me, but Just When I Needed You Most, Sad Eyes and Fire are great emotional ballads that have stood the test of time very well. The Devil Went Down To Georgia is still an amusing country song with some superb instrumental breaks. Nine great songs out of ten tracks make this one of the better Billboard compilations, reflecting all of the relevant styles that made 1979 such a great year for music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Those Were The Days!!
Ah, 1979. It was the last year that disco ruled the pop charts, new wave began its rise, rap had its first Top 40 hit ("Rapper's Delight"), and every newscast began with a countdown of the number of days hostages had been held in Iran. As a 9 year old, I heard these songs everywhere, from "My Sharona" played round the clock on the radio, to "Sad Eyes" and "Just When I Needed You Most" played during slow skate at the local roller rink. I saw most of these songs lip synced to on "Solid Gold" (remember that show?), where Dionne Warwick's hair got shorter every week. I thought Charlie Daniels was one bad dude when he was talking about the Devil coming down south, where I lived at the time! Who knew then that "Y.M.C.A." would become the most played song in the history of the universe? And though I've listened to it for 25 years without tiring of it, I still don't have the foggiest clue what Debbie Harry is singing on "Heart of Glass?!" Needless to say, this CD sums up one year better than just about any other Billboard collection to date. Memories usually don't come this cheap!!! As we said in 1979, "Na Noo, Na Noo."

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compilation
I really love Billboard collections. Instead of buying the individual albums that contain my favorite songs, I can buy a Billboard album that already has all of the hits on one disc. Usually, Billboard albums are chock-full of songs that I recognize and enjoy. This particular album, though, is especially rich with first-class music; the year 1979 must have been an extraordinary one for the music industry. "Billboard Top Hits 1979" starts out with "Heart of Glass," an upbeat, yet relaxing tune by Blondie. Next is a song that everyone recognizes but hardly anyone knows the artist -- "My Sharona" by the Knack. Although this song can get a little repetitive, I still enjoy listening to it from time to time. I really like its placement on the album; the rock tempo is a nice complement to "Heart of Glass." The album continues with another highly-recognized song, "Just When I Needed You Most." This romantic ballad is one of the few soft, slow, emotional songs; it adds variety while still contributing nicely to the whole. One of my personal favorites is the next track, "Escape," which most everyone knows as the infamous PiƱa Colada song. This song's memorable lyrics never fail to touch me every time I hear them. Next up comes two more rock tunes which have also become some of the more popular dance music of the last twenty years, "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor and "YMCA" by the Village People. These two songs have a universal appeal that has already spanned generations since the time that they were first released; the longevity combined with the immense popularity make them some of the greatest songs ever written. The next track is "Sad Eyes" by Robert John; although it isn't a terrible song, it just doesn't deserve to be a follow-up to a song like "YMCA." Its mellow tune just doesn't seem in sync with its placement on the album. The album makes a recovery, though, with "Fire" by the Pointer Sisters, which was another one of my favorite songs with its mystical, enigmatic, fast-paced melody. "Ring My Bell" by Anita Ward was also one of my favorites; it is a perfect follow-up to a song like "Fire," returning the album back to a more cheerful, light-hearted theme. Finally, the album closes with "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," which is not only a great song, but also a great story as well. The country flair of this song is different from the predominant rock/pop theme, ending the album on a different note and thereby contributing to the pleasant variety of music that this album exhibits. Overall, I thought that this was an outstanding album and I certainly recommend it to fans of 1970's pop, rock, and disco music. With such a diverse assortment of classic music all on one disc, this album is a treasure for music fans of all ages.

4-0 out of 5 stars This hits collection is worth it just to have "My Sharona"
Wow, Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" must have been the best song of 1979 because it appears on both "Billboard Top Hits: 1979" and "1979: Billboard Top Dance Hits." This is one of those Billboard hit collections that really covers the music spectrum for the year in question. Not only do you have Disco with Gaynor and the Village People, you have Punk/New Wave represented by by Blondie and The Knack, whatever "Escape (The Pina Colada Song" happens to be, and Country Western with the Charlie Daniels Band. I think this album will make the cut for most people when it comes to checking out the play list to see if there are five or more songs you would like to add to your music collection. The downside is that there are half as many songs here that you will probably just pass over when you play the album. However, I cannot begin to count the number of times that the driving beat of "My Sharona" has gotten me through a late afternoon. That has to count for something, boys and girls. ... Read more

One of the many wonderful things about the film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert was that it educated the populace on the school of drag. (At least a little.) Likewise, the film's soundtrack also enlightens those who may have wrongly thought that drag is rooted specifically in disco and torch classics. Sure, there's more than one version of disco stalwarts like "Shake Your Groove Thing," "I Love the Nightlife," and "I Will Survive," but this collection also finds the camp in songs like Paper Lace's "Billy Don't Be a Hero" and "Take a Letter Maria" by R.B. Graves. And of course, Abba's "Mamma Mia" emerges as the embodiment of overwrought dramatics. The soundtrack, with songs by the Village People and Vanessa Williams, is as much of a romp as the film. --Steve Gdula ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You gotta Love Women in Music...
What can I say? I love this thing! Maybe its because I have been looking for a CD with a lot of songs within my singing range, or maybe I just like that "I Don't Care if The Sun Don't Shine" song. I don't like ABBA though.. Mind you I didn't grow up with disco either. I wasnt even born yet! (I'm 17) A must-have for those nights alone with your hairbrush microphone! Guy Pierce is amazing! I'll admit, the movies better than the music. Caio!

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome soundtrack, a few too many extras
My only qualm with this soundtrack, which is one of my all time favorites, is the extra extended mixes of "I Love the Nightlife", "Go West", "Shake Your Groove Thing"(one of my fave dance hits of all time), and "I Will Survive". These are all really fun songs that came out of the 70's, but I don't need to hear them this often! Maybe as a party disc, I can see how these mixes would fit in. Or maybe if you are working out it would be a great collection of fast songs to get you moving, aside from the few slow ones. I just feel that there is too much repetition.
The disc is outstanding aside from that. This is such a fun group of songs to just pop in your c.d. player and groove to. It's always gets me dancing. It is very entertaining, and I even appreciate the older songs, "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine", and "Can't Help Loving That Man", and "A Fine Romance". These are all by great female singers of an earlier generation than the 70's.
Being an Australian movie, they just had to throw a little ABBA in, "Mamma Mia". There are a few songs from the 90's, "Save the Best for Last" by Vanessa Williams and "Finally" by CeCe Penniston. Then there are a few obscure 70's songs, "Billy Don't be a Hero", and "Take a Letter, Maria". It is a very ecclectic mix, and the mix of songs all fit perfectly together. It's a perfect compliment to the film itself.
I highly recommend this soundtrack. This will not disappoint! Especially for fans of the movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of songs!
The CD opens with a song meant for camp purposes. But, you know it's a guilty pleasure because you'll start singing along too! We're all allowed.

The variety of songs on this CD is wonderful. From jazz to folk to disco to modern remixes of those old dance hits--you will not be disappointed.

As you can see, there are a lot of tracks and the CD is worth it! It's a great disc for parties and other fun activities.

During my cassette days, I wore out the tape. Now that I have a CD player, I can play the disc over and over and over as many times as I want. I still catch myself singing "Can't Help Loving That Man" from "Showboat." That's just one of many great songs on this soundtrack CD. Treat yourself to the movie and then relive your film experience with this CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Wanna make your CD player smile?
Then, drop in this compilation of tunes selected for one of cinema's most unusual stories. Anyone that lived during the oh-so-delicious 70's, as well as anyone with a longing to experience the "ME decade" will delight in this offering. Even the early 90's "Save the Best for Last" and "Finally" have a place here among the disco gems of Peaches & Herb, Alicia Bridges, and the greatest dance song of all: "I Will Survive". Each of the latter are presented in multiple versions, sure to get one's feet a-thumping.

Now, where in the attic is that disco ball?

5-0 out of 5 stars You know you love it! Admit it!
It's true. For all the earlier reviewers bashing this CD for having disco (gasp!), get over yourselves. Honestly, this is a fun CD that also is suprisingly well-balanced. Sure you get some disco classics, like Go West, SHake Your Groove Thing and I Will Survive. However, you also get Take a Letter maria, and I Don't Care if the Sun Don't Shine, to name a few. This CD is not meant to be some grand, serious affair. It's fun music that backed up a great movie. Relax, it's okay to love it! ... Read more

The Miami-based KC and the Sunshine Band scored again and again in the '70s with their spirited, ultracatchy pop-disco. As this two-disc set makes clear, hits such as "Get Down Tonight," "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty," and "Keep It Comin' Love" remain utterly delightful. 25th Anniversary Collection also places emphasis on lesser-known prestardom singles such as "Queen of Clubs" and "I'm a Pushover." Its only real flaw is in a certain too-completeness that leads to the inclusion of three versions of the ballad "Please Don't Go" and a couple of weak Motown covers (KC's own Detroit pastiche, "Who Do Ya Love," is much more successful). Still, it's hard to imagine a more definitive look at these party kings. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Party Disc for New Year's Eve 1999
In his negative review of "The Disco Box", LA Times' aging rock critic, Robert Hilburn, dismissed "Get Down Tonight" and the Disco era as if it were nothing special. Of course, the problem with rock critics like Hilburn was that they were afraid to admit they liked a lot of disco music. Most rock critics are always shy about recognizing a guilty pleasure when they see it. And sadly, with the music sounding as good as it did back in the late 70's, they still can't admit they are wrong. KC & The Sunshine Band didn't start out as critic favorites. Only when they faded from the charts did critic's take notice. And they weren't a guilty pleasure, either. They were a great band who wrote great hits. This 2 CD set only suffers from a poor finish. The amazon reviewer is right when he says that 3 versions of "Please Don't Go" are too much. Sometimes, completeness gets the best of Rhino. But by adding "Who Do Ya Love" and "Rock Your Baby" this makes a strong addition to KC's catalog. If you own Rhino's single disc "Best Of" you might not need this. But the rest of KC's fans will eat it all up. Here's hoping Rhino sends a copy to Disco-critic haters like Hilburn. He'll love it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complete to a fault -- For serious fans only
Unless you are a hardcore KC fan, skip this 2 CD set, and instead get "The Best of KC & the Sunshine Band [Rhino 1990]"

If you want some kitschy fun, that disc has it in spades. This double CD has lots of retro fun, also -- in fact, too much.

The double set has too many unremarkable songs, and lots of filler. Three (count 'em -- 3) versions of "Please don't go," including one in Spanish ("Por Favor no te Vayas"); An instrumental version of "Rock Your Baby," (wherein the Sunshine Band erroneously mistakes themselves for Duke Ellingtons orchestra), and covers of great motown hits like "Same Old Song" and "Dancin' in the Street."

All told, the single disc has all of the great KC tunes you remember from the radio of your youth (or every Bar Mitzvah and /or wedding you've ever been to) without all the useless filler.

You can listen straight thru without having to skip skip skip, skip skip skip, to the bootie . . .

4-0 out of 5 stars Disco's Day In Sunshine Recalled on KC 25th Anniversary Set
This 25th anniversary two-disc set of KC & The Sunshine Band's best is bookended by two versions of their signature song, "Get Down Tonight."

Disc one starts with the original 1975 single, one of disco's (and, by extension, the 1970s) most explosive, assertive musical moments. Bandleader/leadsinger Harry "KC" Casey jumps from a sparking guitar solo and pounding drums to ask the world if its ready for a brand newer beat. "Get Down Tonight!" is exhortation as well as invitation, completing in disco the mix of the gospel and blues Ray Charles spent his early career forging. Rock theatrics, JBs groove, Spectorian production and Miami salsa joined then to form disco's hedonistic music and message.

In the extended mix closing Disc 2, legendary DJ Tom Moulton dismantles, reassembles and stretches pieces of the original hit across its incessant bass/drum beat. You hear sparse piano jazz, guitars conversing in Morse code, horns leading a charge then pulling back in rhythm. Moulton rethinks a classic pop single, providing a composing lesson to dance to.

In between those versions Rhino tells KC & The Sunshine Band's story through its remarkable string of 1975-78 hits: propulsive grooves like "I'm Your Boogie Man," "Keep It Coming Love," and the "That's The Way (I Like It)" turn horn riffs and female chants into sexy, trashy, and gritty songs in disco's heydey. Even their lone ballad hit, "Please Don't Go" (the first #1 of the 80s) packs big band production punch and a near carnival riff repeated throughout the song.

In the margins you hear the Sunshine Band's showcase sharp Kool & The Gang-style disco-funk ("Shotgun Shuffle," and their version of George McCrae's hit, "Rock Your Baby.") You also hear should-have-been-hits like "Who Do You Love?" and 1978's surprisingly strong take on the Four Tops' "It's The Same Old Song." You also hear occasional missteps like 1982's "Let's Go Rock and Roll," and a flaccid, "Dancing In The Street" before KC rebounded with 1984's comeback, "Give It Up."

This group was entirely about its singles, so this collection is slightly less essential than either taut collections like 1990's best-of or KC's entry in Warner's "Essentials" series. But disco and general 70s music fans will find this 2 CD-set expands and celebrates an underrated group and phenomenon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Somebody cut on the disco ball!
The collection from KC & The Sunshine Band could have been a one disc recording instead of two because there were too many songs I didn't recognize on the first disc, while the second gave it to me like a neutron bomb. For the first disc, even if you don't dig them all, some of the tunes will have you bopping in rhythmn. On a whole, this set will bring back the seventies in a grand fashion and have you stepping to a almost forgotten beat.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love Disco...
This greatest hits package is wonderful. It even has Wrap Your Arms Around Me. I bought it just for that song and love all the rest too. If you still love Disco, this is a must have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rating 100%
Back in 1990, Rhino records commenced the collaboration of the "Have A Nice Day" compilation series. Ultimately this resulted in a 25 volume set of CD's. All of the discs contain a mixture of top charting hits and obscure classics from the seventies. Many of the discs have come together quite well with a collection of great tracks, whilst some of the other discs are as horrid as my old set of pink flares.

One of the best volumes is number 22. This one contains that guitar stumpin' classic "driver seat" from Sniff and the Tears. What about abit of dance with Hot Chocolates "everyone's a winner" and Nick Gilders "hot child in the City". Feeling romantic? There's Nicolette Larson's "lotta love", John Paul Young's "love is in the air" and Robert John's "Sad eyes". Other tracks include Chris Norman and Suzi Quatro's Duet "stumblin' in" and John Stewart's "gold". I was about age ten when many of these tracks where at the top of the charts. Nothing beats that good old seventies nostalgia. Again a disc that get's a good thrashing at my place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rhino sure knows how to pick 'em
One of the outstanding members of the Have A Nice Day collection, this disc captures the feel of a turning point in musical styles. Briefly...

"Hot Child In The City": Seductive, androgynous vocals here from Nick Gilder. Listeners appear to have missed the "cautionary" point of this song...everyone wanted to meet the young girl dressed in black.

"Love Is In the Air": A memorable tune from the late 70's, from Aussie singer John Paul Young. It had a brief renaissance when it was included in the Aussie film "Strictly Ballroom" in the early 90's.

"My Sharona": The Knack gave us a preview of the changing attitudes towards the "disco" late 70's with their "garage band" rock tune. Appeared in the slacker/nostalgia flick "Reality Bites".

"Gold": Great vocals by John Stewart, with backup and "ooo-ooo's" by none other than Stevie Nicks!

"Driver's Seat" and "Hold On" are complex, existentialist "mood" pieces with innovative instrumental and vocal arrangements. Contrast these with Rex Smith's bubble gum "Take My Breath Away".

Robert John's "Sad Eyes" is blessed with muscular instrumentalization and one of the finest falsettos you are likely to hear in the modern age.

Besides that, this CD will prove a "fistful of memories" (hopefully good ones) for anyone who grew up during this era. Don't miss out!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite CD in the series.
Growing up in the 1970s, I was an avid listener to radio (both AM and FM). My dad frequently bought me LPs and 45s (for those of you who are young, you might not remember vinyl *g*) of my favorite songs or songs that he thought I would like.

My favorite songs on this CD are:

Every 1's a Winner (Hot Chocolate). This top 10 hit is by the same group that had a hit with "Emma" and "You Sexy Thing."

Hot Child in the City (Nick Gilder). Number 1 song for the week of October 28, 1978 for one week. This song made the record of the longest time of a song to reach number 1 (taking 20 weeks to go from Number 88 to Number 1).

Love Is in the Air (John Paul Young). This is one of those songs when you were young, you would lip synch in the living room next to the record player. You know you yell out the chorus with arms open wide, "LOVE IS IN THE AIRRRRRR!!! OOOOOHHHHHH!!!!"

Lotta Love (Nicolette Larson). A Top 10 hit in early 1979. This song always reminds me of roller skating at the rinks on Saturday mornings. When listening to the song, I can still hear the skates on the wood floor.

Stumblin' In (Suzi Quatro & Chris Norman). Leather Tuscadero from "Happy Days" recorded a Top 40 hit. This was the biggest American hit for the duet.

My Sharona (The Knack). Number one song the week of August 25, 1979. I had this 45rpm and played it constantly in 1979.

Gold (John Stewart). This is a song that featured Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac. You can't miss Stevie's background vocals while she sings a half a beat behind. My favorite line would have to be: "Well my buddy Jim Bash, he is workin' pumpin' gas and he makes $2.50 for an hour." Wow! What a wage!

Driver's Seat (Sniff 'N' The Tears). This song should be on everyone's "car" or "driving" tape or CD for travelling.

Sad Eyes (Robert John). Number 1 the week of October 6, 1979 for one week. This song was tied with Nick Gilder's "Hot Child in the City" for the longest time reaching Number 1 on Billboard's Charts (entered the charts at Number 85 and then 20 weeks later it arrived at Number 1).

This is my favorite volume in Rhino's Super Hits of the '70s series. It brings back those memories of the late 1970s when I was 8 years old and the freedom of being a little kid during the fall of 1978 and the summer of 1979.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely blend of 70s styles
This is a lovely blend of late 70's styles like disco (Hot Chocolate), big ballads (Rex Smith), wistful pop (John Paul Young, Robert John), power pop (The Knack), atmospheric rock (Nick Gilder), catchy singalong pop (Quattro & Norman) plus a couple of lesser known but still great tracks by Ian Gomm, Nicolette Larson, etc. I remember 1978 as a great year for good music in which singles sales reached a record high, in a decade that I consider the golden age of pop music. Even dance music had personality then and wasn't just mass-produced 4 beats to the bar anonymous variations on a theme. My favorites here include the tense, erotic "Hot Child", the dreamy, hypnotic "Love Is In The Air", the poppy disco of "Everyone's A Winner" and the sensitive "Sad Eyes." Vol. 22 makes a valuable contribution to an excellent series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Disco, Ballads, Rockers...Take Your Pick!
Volume 22 in this "Have A Nice Day" CD series covers the major hits from the Fall of '78 on through to the fall of '79. There's something for every fan of late '70's music here. You have Disco (Every 1's a Winner-Hot Chocolate), Ballads (Lotta Love-Nicolette Larson, Dancin' Shoes-Nigel Olsson, Stumblin' In-Chris Norman and Suzi Quatro, Love Is In The Air-John Paul Young, Sad Eyes-Robert John and You Take My Breath Away-Rex Smith) as well as some good rockers (Hot Child In The City-Nick Gilder, Gold-John Stewart, Driver's Seat-Sniff 'N The Tears). The only bad song in this collection is Ian Gomm's "Hold On", otherwise, the many above listed songs make this d a must buy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Music From Far, Far Away.
This compact disc rocks! I vaguely remember hearing the music when I was a wee fry many moons ago. When I got older, I heard about the album but never was able to locate a copy of it. About a year ago, I was informed it was out on cd and I now finally have a copy. The music here is disco so unless you're a disco fan or Star Wars buff, you probably wouldn't want a copy. However, if you are a member of any of the above mentioned categories, this album would make a nice addition to your collection.

The second title on this album, "Other Galactic Funk", is a delight to hear, too. The sound of the song sounds like a marching band gone disco. What an idea! Awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars I still have it!
I have this L.P. at home here. It's in great condition, but it's not like I can hook up a record player in my car when I'm going to work. I love the sound of the 70's and Star Wars is one of my favorite movies, so when I found that they put this on CD, I was psyched! Disco lives on!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cheese. . .
This CD as many have stated before is a Disco Star Wars along with several other mixes. Trust me, it is really cheesy and very corny. It is however incredibly fun and light hearted. I enjoy the whole aspect of the disco/john williams hybrid and just simply have fun with it. I am listening right now to a light saber battle with a disco beat underneath it and smiling all the while. Come on music buffs, lighten up and have some fun. This is some great stuff to just rock out to and feel good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disco NOT funk
The theme to Star Wars to a disco beat plus other Star Wars music done disco. To top it all off, two more versions of Star Wars done disco. This is NOT funk. It is disco at its cheesiest. It will definitely bring you back to the era where disco nearly killed off live music...

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sound To Old Ears...
I worn out this vinal LP when it originaly came out.

I am glad that this was re-released on CD.

The orignal LP just encluded "Star Wars" and "Other Galatic Funk"

This re-release also gives us the 45 rpm single (7" edit), and the 12" Disco Edit that were mainly played on the Radio at the time.

"Star Wars" is a great mix of inspired music from Meco that he saw fit from the movie. A must for any Star Wars fan (before Lucas ruined the movie), and also children from the 70's.

"Other Galactic" funk is a very rare track for Meco, he takes the marching rhythm and the sounds he heard from the city streets to produce a real good marching themed track.

Now there are other albums from Meco I have not seen on CD yet, and they are

"Encounters of Every Kind" - A fantastic voyage using a 'Time Machine' based story line for the entire album. This is by far my most favorite Meco album. Since this album features a great deal of sound effects, including a full drive by shooting before the song "Crazy Rhythm" when the time machine visits the 1920's era.

"Wizard Of Oz" - Meco visits and arranges music from the classic MGM movie.

"Superman and Other Galactic Heroes" - Meco sets out on a musical adventure as Superman.

"Moondancer" - Meco, the Moon and Disco Music... nothing else more to say.

"Meco Pop Goes To The Movies" - Meco's has taken famous movie themes, such as "M*A*S*H", "Gone With The Wind", "The Pink Panther", and more and has remixed them as his own versions. ... Read more

Despite its title, director Whit Stillman's follow-up to Metropolitan and Barcelona isn't really about disco at all. It's more a story about young people coming of age, friends all a bit out of touch with the direction in which their lives are headed. So it makes sense that the songs included here--mostly disco chestnuts--are far from groundbreaking. Contributions from Alicia Bridges, Diana Ross, Chic, and Sister Sledge are safe bets that give the film its Studio 54 shadings. Eveyln "Champagne" King's "I Don't Know If It's Right" and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' "The Love I Lost" may the lack the quirks of "Doctor's Orders" by Carol Douglas and "Let's All Chant" by the Michael Zager Band, but it still makes for a solid, fun collection of disco tunes. --Jason Verlinde ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great dance music, one of the best soundtracks ever
This is one of the greatest soundtrack I've ever heard. I saw the movie, but was hesitant to get the soundtrack because I didn't really like disco, but I'm so glad I did. Hasn't left my cd player since forever

5-0 out of 5 stars When Disco Was King
Am 20yrs of age. In contrary to review above, thought movie was absolutely marvellous and made me want to write my first book about the disco years and how they were a mixture of Utopia and hell...and this s'track convinced me even more...the music here is wonderful! Apart from, obviously, the new version of "I love the nightlife"...favourites are sister sledge, alicia bridges, "more more more" (did anyone else recognise it in that song "you can steal my sunshine"?), "knock on wood" (a great re-working of an old soul number...which i am listening to right now sung by otis redding). unlike other people i like "the oogum boogum song" as well. but my ABSOLUTE FAVORITES here and two of my favourite songs EVER are "i'm coming out" and "love train"...i am sooo sooo glad i bought this cd, it is disco heaven! I love the nightlife! I wanna boogie! a much better s'track than say contemporary disco s'tracks like "saturday night fever"...to my mind disco is horribly underrated still and much abused and sneered at...it should be seen as a continuition of the 60s, the fallout from vietnam and watergate and altamont...people just trying to have fun w/ drugs and drink to forget the emotional heartache and great energy expended in the long hot 60s, but the whole thing having a heart of darkness (ie aids and drug/drink dependency etc etc...see "boogie nites") and ultimately destroying itself, see this film and "54" etc (and "saturday night fever" which is nothing more than fitzgerald in the 70s)...v. great gatsby/sun also rises esque...but back to the s'track. what else can i say? buy it and re-live the funkiness of disco and WATCH THE FILM! s'track and film are some of my favorites ever! etc etc

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great CD
I agree with the review above...the cd is great, but the movie was dumb. Don't waste your money on the movie, buy the cd instead!

5-0 out of 5 stars People all over the world..... join in and buy this CD
It's got long tunes(Shame, The love I lost), tunes you have never heard(Oogum Boogum Song), tunes you haven't heard in twenty plus years(More,More,More, Doctor's Orders) and tunes you will never be able to get out of your head(ALL OF THE ABOVE). 17 songs on this album and the only one I don't care for is the modernised version of Got to be Real. When the first Pure Disco CD came out I was really into it because it had some hard to find tracks. This CD blows that away. THIS IS PURE DISCO and is essential to any fan. They also didn't cop out and throw some half-baked songs and try to make two CD's worth of incomplete songs. This CD is disco bliss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the CD, NEVER watch the movie
I got this disc at a going-out-of-business sale before I'd ever seen the movie. The soundtrack is fabulous, especially the elusive Don Ray's "Got To Have Loving" (did he record anything else?), so I thought I might rent the movie. Ahhhhhhhhhh! It was TERRIBLE! Completely dumb! My advice is to buy the CD and stay away from the movie. It's really too bad that such a good soundtrack is wasted on such a pitiful movie. ... Read more

The wisdom of their wardrobes notwithstanding, the Bee Gees rank with ABBA as the ultimate '70s pop heavyweights. As the title suggests, the concert collection One Night Only captures the brothers in action, serving as a compendium of some of their greatest hits--"Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever," "More Than a Woman," "I Started a Joke"--fleshed out with Gibb-penned songs successfully recorded by others. Hence, the inclusion of "I Can't See Nobody" (recorded by Nina Simone, among others), "Guilty" (Barbra Streisand), and the Dolly Parton-Kenny Rogers classic "Islands in the Stream." Recorded in 1997, One Night Only shows the brothers' age somewhat, especially in Barry's falsetto, which sounds tinny and forced. But it's a small complaint amid strong live performances and the enduring sheen of the material itself. --Courtney Kemp ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Only one song justifies the price of this CD
I've been waiting years for a full-length version of the Bee Gees performing "Islands in the Stream," and this recording made it worth the wait. It's a wonderful song, done here with energy, feeling and a great arrangement. I have to say though that energy and feeling are lacking throughout the rest of this album, with the exception of their medley of hits. "I Can't See Nobody" is breathtakingly beautiful, showcasing the brothers' incredible harmonies. I would much rather hear full versions of the songs they do in medley and skip the disco songs altogether. They don't even sound like they enjoy singing them anymore. Their 80's and early 90's albums died on U.S. charts because everybody thought those albums were loaded with disco songs - even though they weren't - and they turned out to be some of the best Bee Gees recordings that no one has ever heard. If "One" and "Wish You Were Here" and "Paradise" were included here instead of "Tragedy" and "Grease", they could actually be selling some of these CDs to people other than die-hard fans. If you want a truly wonderful live Bee Gees recording, buy the DVD version of the "One for All" concerts.

5-0 out of 5 stars No More Jive Talkin
In the 30+ years of the Bee Gees recordings, one tends to forget just how diverse these guys really are. From the early days of songs like "Massachusetts" to the disco days of "You Should Be Dancing," to their still melodious works like "Still Waters," the Gibb brothers have silenced many critics because they just don't stop. This live and studio track collection is a good representation of their many hits, not only for themselves but for others: "Heartbreaker," a smash for Dionne Warwick; "Guilty," the Barry Gibb-Barbra Streisand classic; "Islands in the Stream" the Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton hit. They even had someone who sings higher than them (Celine Dion) join them for "Immortality." A touching tribute to their late brother, Andy, is a nice addition- "Don't Throw It All Away." My only disappointment came with the toned-down acoustic version of "Nights on Broadway," but hey, it's their song, they can be creatively different if they want to! I also missed "ESP" which is one of their most cleverly different disco tunes from the mid-nineties. All in all, this is a must for any Bee Gees fan who have achieved "Immortality" in their career!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Outstanding Concert
Since this is the first concert to be recorded in DVD format since the Bee Gees is born, so for sure it's very catchy. This is a CD with the concert recorded in only voice, but it will still be a great CD since it went plantium in serveral countries. 1997, the concert was held in Las Vegas, was also the year when Bee Gees was in the Songwriters' Hall of Fame, and Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. It was a fantastic year for the Bee Gees.
This concert contains great songs including Massachusetts, To Love Somebody, Closer than Closer (The only Maurice Gibb solo in the concert), One (Their best song ever), How Deep Is your love, and Alone. There are songs that have not bee performed by the Bee Gees themselves, which are Islands in the Stream, Heartbreaker, Guilty, Don't Throw It All Away (Recorded voice of Andy Gibb), and Immortallity featuring Celine Dion. I suggest the Celine Dion's fans to buy this one too, because Immortallity is very touching.
Overall, this concert and the CD was super well done, since it was the third CD that was recorded lively. If you want the other two that were released earlier, they are Here At Last...Bee Gees Live, and Tales from the Brother Gibbs. Later on, Live By Request was released.
Enjoy the trio!

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly good.
All I can say is that this album is excellent. Casual fans may be tempted to get their 2-disc "Greatest Hits", which is also amazing, but this 24 track live disc is just as great. Song after song is just classic, and newcomers will probably be suprised by how many hits these guys had. Included is "Stayin' Alive", "To Love Somebody", "Tragedy", and even "Grease". Plus "Islands In The Stream", and my favorite "(Our Love) Don't Throw It All Away". This is a perfect example of quality and quantity together in one collection, and it's all live in Las Vegas too. It's a must for any level of fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1998 Album of the Year
It's not often that a Live album can cement the title of "Album of the Year", but clearly in 1998 the Bee Gees' effort on "One Night Only" merits a share of my choice for Album of the Year. The Bee Gees who were nearly 30 years into their career came together for a 1997 Pay Per View Las Vegas concert entitled "One Night Only". Before this effort, the Bee Gees had only moderate success as a performing group following the incredible success on the heels of the "Saturday Night Fever" era. This particular performance by the Bee Gees caught them on their "A" game putting together a concert of innovative, powerful and inspiring music.

The Bee Gees open the concert with a segue between the old and new. They start off with their most dynamic song of their career - "You Should Be Dancing". Without a bunch of remixing, you will come to appreciate this classic in a whole new light being performed live. Listen especially to the percussions on this song. You'll also hear crowd noise which the CD does a great job at not making too overbearing. Following "You Should Be Dancing", there is a nice segue into one of their newest songs called "Alone". The segue is perfect and is one example of bridging old and new nicely.

After the "You Should Be Dancing/Alone" segue, Barry Gibb says "...shoot back thirty years....and bring you up to date slowly but surely". Thus a series of older Bee Gees songs "Massachusetts", "To Love Somebody", "Words", and "Closer than Close" go back to the older years of the Bee Gees. The Bee Gees won't perform songs in chronological order, but by going back to the Bee Gees early stuff at the beginning of the performance, it sets the table real nicely. I wasn't as familiar with this material by the Bee Gees, but after hearing it, I did come to appreciate things better.

The Bee Gees make use of modern technology in a couple of areas. One is to perform a live "duet" with their late brother Andy Gibb. The title of the song is called "Our Love (Don't Throw It Away)". In this song, the Bee Gees make use of some tracks that Andy recorded when he was alive and put some of their own live tracks around it (very similar to what the Beatles did with John Lennon on the "Anthology" album with "Real Love" but in this case the Bee Gees do it live). I happened to watch the video of this concert and you can see the emotion on Barry Gibb's face thinking about his late brother as he sings "this losing you is real, though I still feel you inside". On the CD, you will also feel Barry's heartache and true emotion as he sings those words. It's really powerful stuff. The other area is a "duet" with Frankie Valli to sing "Grease" which is a song that the Brothers Gibb wrote. The Bee Gees perform a live version of "Grease" and in the middle of the song they put a recorded track by Frankie Valli. (who sang the version of that song for the movie back in 1978) Although Valli didn't perform live with them, they do an amazing job at integrating him into the live performance and it is another example of bridging the old and the new nicely.

The Bee Gees do a nice job at including many of the songs that they wrote for other artists. Besides "Grease", there are versions of "Islands in the Stream", "I Can't See Nobody", "Heartbreaker", and "Guilty". The bad news is on the latter three songs, they are only small segments from those songs and they don't include the full version of the song. It would have been nice if Barbra Streisand was folded into "Guilty" much like Frankie Valli for "Grease", but these are minor flaws - the stuff that is included is still top notch.

The Bee Gees bring out a special guest - Celine Dion to sing "Immortality". I'm not a big Dion fan by any means, but she does an very nice job with the Brothers Gibb. It is worth noting that this song was included in the Broadway Musical "Saturday Night Fever" (which ironically was my other choice for 1998 co-Album of the Year).

On Tracks 9 through 16 the Bee Gees do sort of 'Unplugged' segment with "Lonely Days", "New York Mining Disaster", "I Can't See Nobody", "And the Sun Will Shine", "Nights on Broadway", "How Could You Mend a Broken Heart", "Heartbreaker", and "Guilty". Although again there are some segments of songs used here - the Brothers Gibb show that they just aren't Disco Kings by performing some excellent acoustics.

As for the Saturday Night Fever stuff, the main Bee Gees stuff from the movie is all there. There is a nice segue between "Night Fever" and "More Than a Woman" early in the concert. Most of the SNF material comes later in the concert "Jive Talkin" (technically not an SNF song, but was on the Soundtrack), "How Deep is Your Love", and "Stayin Alive". The Bee Gees end their performance with a reprise of the electric start they used to this CD with "You Should Be Dancing". It is also worth noting that the classic songs "Tragedy" and "I Started a Joke" are also performed.

The liner notes are a little thin, however the band credits are given. Despite the thin liner notes, I think the performance speaks for itself. Due to the death of Maurice Gibb in 2003, this would really be the last great live performance by the Bee Gees. The innovations used in this performance combined with a high energy performance truly make this the Best Album for 1998. It's a great way to discover or re-discover the Brothers Gibb. Must Have CD. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
It contains all of the hits from 1979-1987, when Kool & the Gang were in their heyday. I was in high school and college during this time and many of the songs on this CD were mainstays on the radio. From the haunting "Cherish", the funk of "Take my Heart", the disco dance classic "Ladies Night, to the unforgettable R&B classics like "Joanna", they're all here. For the true fan of Kool & the Gang, if you have no other CDs by them, this is the one to get!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's time to celebrate!
Without a doubt, Kool & The Gang are one of my favorite funk/soul artists, if not my favorite. This album covers the late disco era of 1979 all the way up to when pop was going strong in 1987. All of Kool & The Gang's best hits in those years are here on this album. Although Kool & The Gang might not get the credit for it, they were a good versatile group. While you listen to this album, you'll hear songs that have a little bit of disco in them such as "Ladies Night," rocking tunes such as "Tonight" and "Misled," and good ballads such as "Joanna" and "Cherish."

Even though the song "Celebration" is still widely played at various celebratory events such as when a home town NBA team wins a game, Kool & The Gang's other songs and Kool & The Gang themselves don't get the credit they deserve.

I recommend anybody who likes rock or soul from the era of the late 70s to mid 80s to get this album. It's the definitive album for a great group. The booklet with the CD tells a biography of Kool & The Gang and also tells the chart positions on both the R&B and Pop Charts for every song.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Penultimate Collection
I actually give this 3-CD collection 3.5 stars. CD 1 will teleport to the great times of the 70's and 80's. CD 2 incorporates more synthesizers and has more of a rock 'n roll feel. If they had left songs like "Straight Ahead", "Peacemaker", "Rags To Riches" and "Strong" off of the second CD and added the three missing classics, "Summer Madness", "Hollywood Swinging" and "Open Sesame", I would have given this CD collection 5 stars. CD 3 provides hipper (remix) versions of a couple classic tunes. Thus, this not the ultimate collection but the penultimate collection. Still, it's a nice CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the combo
The CD is a good complilation of the later works of Kool & The Gang. It compliments the Best of Kool & the Gang 1969-76 CD, so I suggest buying the both of them if you want a comlete collection of CDs that cover Kool & the Gang's career with out overlapping and duplicating tracks. Added bonus: the version of "Cherish" on this CD is the extended track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jamming CD!!!!!
This is one of the baddest best of cds this one great it has all of my favorite kool and the gang songs on here and therefore I reccommend anyone whoever likes kool and the gang should buy this album because this is a great best of compilation cd . Some of my favorites on this album are: Misled, Joanna, Fresh, Cherish, Let's Go Dancing, and many other great songs!!!! ... Read more

The Originals languished on Motown's roster until Marvin Gaye took an interest in their career in 1968. Soon he'd produced and cowritten two Top 5 soul hits for the smooth quartet. The doo-wop-influenced "Baby I'm for Real" and "The Bells" are hardly the only highlights of this compilation, though--"God Bless Whoever Sent You" and the later disco smash "Down to Love Town" are near classics that deserve the new light that falls on them here. Most rewarding for Gaye fans will be an early, unreleased version of "Just to Keep You Satisfied," a song he later rewrote for Let's Get It On. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy Happy, Fun Fun
This CD is so great. When you pop it in at a party the whole room starts to dance! The songs on it are ones we'll all recognize, if not from the originals then from the rap songs that sampled heavily from them. This is a fun CD and everyone I play it for runs out and buys it. We want the funk.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have disc for anyone who's having a party soon
Rhino records has justifiably made its name with compilation CDs. "Millenium Funk Party" rates about the highest groove-per-dollar you could ask for. With scorchers like the Ohio Players' "Love Rollercoaster" and the apocalyptically danceable "Atomic Dog" from Parliament/Funkadelic frontman George Clinton, even the most staid wallflowers will find themselves grinding their hips to a quality of funk which, sadly, is lost on the screechy R & B dance disasters of the present day. Rhino's liner notes, while excellent, suffer slightly by Rhino's own high standards with a somewhat affected style. But this is a very minor criticism for a very important CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring on the funk
Every song on this CD had me singing along with the songs that I remember from so long ago. This is one of the best various artist CDs on the market. Every last one of these songs is vintage funk. There is no filler on this CD, its all great music that will have toes tapping, feet stomping and butts shaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Source of many a rap rip-off or sample
This CD is definitely one of the best party and driving CDs in my collection. It's kinda like going back in time and finding a long-lost soul station somewhere down south. Every track here is a classic - it's fun to play this CD for someone who just heard a great 'original' rap song and play the funk song it was swiped from! The music here shows lack of originality in some of today's R&B; it also shows the creativity of many of the 70's and 80's funksters, even if some of them only had a couple of hits. This CD is guaranteed to liven up your next party or get together - so much better than many of the tired, safe as skim milk, moldy oldies compilations found at too many baby boomer parties today.

Modern Hollywood has developed a tradition of releasing similarly themed pictures in near pairs, but who'd have thought it would release two films with a central theme of societal scapegoating within weeks of each other in '99--and that one of them would be South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut? Spike Lee's Summer of Sam is a little more straightforward in its telling of a New York neighborhood's descent into paranoia and finger-pointing as a serial killer stalks its streets in the summer of '77, and while its soundtrack doesn't plumb the scabrous, madcap satiric depths of Messrs. Parker and Stone, it's a serviceable--if occasionally threadbare--collection of period rock (The Who chestnut "Baba O'Riley"), pop (ABBA's "Dancing Queen," "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin Bishop), funk (Roy Ayers's "Running Away," "Got to Give It Up" by Marvin Gaye), and a whole lot o' 1970s disco/club music (Chic's "Everybody Dance," "Best of My Love" by the Emotions, "La Vie en Rose" by the incomparable Grace Jones among them). Oddly missing for a film in which one of the main characters sports a nascent Mohawk is any hint of the era's--and region's--blossoming punk and new wave music. Still, it's a thematically sound, smartly sequenced collection that evokes both era and atmosphere well. --Jerry McCulley ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I "fooled around and fell in love" with this soundtrack.
I am a huge fan of soundtracks specifically for the variety and the mood they create. This one does a fabulous job in both categories. I really enjoy this CD because it does have some of the more popular 70s songs, but they aren't all disco. (Ok, so "Dancin' Queen" is my favorite song.) Nevertheless, if you liked the movie then you'll love the soundtrack.

4-0 out of 5 stars SUMMER OF SAM IS THE JAM!!!
SOS movie and soundtrack bought back a lot of memories!I was 9 years old when the son of sam was on the loose(which was hor rible)but most of the songs are a treasure! My favorite is the hard to find "There for the grace of god"!I also love "Running away" but hate the edited version."Let no man put asunder,Every body dance,Dancing Queen and La vie en rose" are definetely on my favorite list as well!Although I'm not to familiar with THE WHO, I enjoy "Baba O'Riley"!!I would have prefered "Do you wanna get funky with me"(Peter Brown) instead of "Dance with me"."Fooled around and fell in love" is another unfamiliar but likeable song.I would have also prefer "Boogie Wonderland" (Emotions) over the boring "Best of my love".Even though I like "Don't leave me this way", it is toooooo common!!!You hear this song everywhere all the time so Spike Lee could have put some thing more rare and less commercial as "DLMTW".Otherwise I love this cd and I consider it a disco collection. If you're not a true disco diva like myself, you may not understand and enjoy this cd but I do recommend this cd for those who love disco!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good but where's the punk?
I got this in the local store thinking there was going to be the song "Hello From The Gutters" which was actually recorded and performed by the actors (!). Unfortunately it wasn't on there and I don't know where to find that song or if it even exists at all on CD. With the exception of the two Who songs (especially "Baba O' Riley") there is not a shred of punk in this album.

But, the disco and pop and such work well here. "There But For The Grace of God" was probably the best song with the best message, and ABBA always works wonders. Chic's "Everybody Dance" is another classic, though I'm convinced they used it in the wrong movie scene. Also of interest are the various soul and diva anthems. Of course you can't go wrong with the Who.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just because!
The mid seventies: I was born. The early nineties: Wished I was a disco queen. The late nineties: Saw "Boogie Nights." LOVED it, especially the dance sequences and the tight disco and dance music. The late nineties: Saw "54." LOVED it, mostly because of the dance sequences and the tight disco and dance music. The late nineties: Saw "Last Days of Disco." LOVED it, ONLY because of the dance sequences and the tight disco and dance music. The late nineties: Saw "Summer of Sam." Much like "Boogie Nights" I watched it repeatedly...until I noticed that these movies ALL had something in common. THE SAME SONGS! The only real standout as far as disco music is concerned on the "Summer of Sam" CD is the cut by Machine...a song I'd never heard or heard OF before I watched the movie. But "Fooled Around and Fell in Love?" (I'm tired of typing quotation marks now) Boogie Nights. Don't Leave Me This Way? 54 (It was even in each movie's trailer!) Best of My Love? Opening sequence of Boogie Nights. Got To Give It Up? Boogie Nights AGAIN. A song that DID appear in SOS actually WAS the Heatwave cut Boogie Nights, which never, ironically, showed up in the Boogie Nights movie...doesn't it seem like the powers that were could have included a song like that on the SOS soundtrack instead of ones we've heard over and over? Like one other reviewer said, if you like the song by Machine this CD is worth the fifteen or so bucks. If not...listen to your Boogie Nights soundtrack. Or...your 54 soundtrack...etc.

3-0 out of 5 stars A lot like Boogie Nights
The movie was great but the soundtrack is too much like Boogie Nights. Wish they'd used some of the more obscure songs from the movie rather than these. Still good but if you already have the Boogie Nights soundtrack, it's not worth it. Don't buy it for the Who, buy "Who's Next" instead! ... Read more

Rose Royce was the most anonymous of disco hit-makers. Theyscored 11 R&B top 30 singles, but the fact that they had four leadvocalists couldn't have helped cement their image, and neither cantheir range of material, from funk-pop stomps ("Car Wash," "Do YourDance") to smoldering slow ones. Originally assembled by psychedelicsoul controller Norman Whitfield as a post-Motown project, the groupgradually drifted from disco downpours to Quiet Storm drizzle. Aftertheir full-throttle debut with the Car Wash soundtrack, diminishingreturns set in, though this compilation cherry picks the good albumtracks from later records as well as the hits. But Whitfield's presenceinsured that there was usually something unconventional happening inthe mix--check the Space Invaders bass on the ballad "Love Don't LiveHere Anymore"--and the songs Whitfield and his stable handed them werepowerful and resonant, including the original versions of Mary J. Blige's"I'm Going Down" and the much-covered "Wishing on a Star." --DouglasWolk ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars cool package
Rose Royce has there classic Jams on this Set.while there are many Greatest Hits Sets out on them this one is fully loaded on the Main Versions.this Band peaked at the right time&had a nice Mix of Funky Jams&Slow Jams that worked really well for there overall Style&Sound.

3-0 out of 5 stars Are the record company's sleeping????
So many best of cd's of Rose Royce, but never including the 12"
version of BEST LOVE, the song many soulful 80's lovers are searching for!!!!!!!!!. 5 thumbs down for the record companies.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is the real deal
This is a good compilation of Rose Royce's best songs. The liner notes are decent, and explain the changes in the band's makeup over the years.

Most of the songs appear in the full length album versions. The sound quality is good, but I wish Rhino would use HDCD encoding (like so many other WEA titles do).

It's likely that anyone who buys this will already know the biggest hits on this cd, but if you are unfamiliar with Rose Royce's music, just think "old school" disco and "old school" ballads. ... Read more
