Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold, two of the most famous DJs in the world and kings of big beat and house, respectively, are supremely showcased in this double-CD collection. The Essential Selection, Vol. 1 glorifies each mixmaster's equal, yet mutually exclusive talents in roof raising. The back-to-back discs are an enlightening example of the yin and yang of club music; Fatboy Slim's grounded, drier, giddier expressions of overlapping funk and disco juxtapose Oakenfold's spatial, entrancing continuum supplemented with buzzing, flatulent bass lines, and celestial synths. Both DJs are experts in flow, building beats seamlessly into climactic moments of frenzied, adrenaline-fueled euphoria, then swinging the vibe down again with the subtlety and patience of a free-falling feather. No doubt Fatboy Slim is known for his deliberate lack of subtlety stylistically, but when placed in this context, immediately compared to Oakenfold's ethereal grooves, it's evident that Stormin' Norman possesses copious finesse. Because of their stylistic polarity, like platinum and gold, these DJs shine with matched but multihued brilliance, and like soil and sun, are indispensable components of a diverse dance music ecology. --Beth Massa ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Crazy-style
While this album is a valuable piece of my collection, it can be hit-or-miss on a track by track basis. The largest problem I have is that the two sets are so different - while I like both, it doesn't seem to make sense to have both in the same box.

Fatboy Slim's set starts off with an annoyingly loud beat but falls into its groove by the fourth track, at which point he unleashes a set that includes some of the best track-to-track mixes I've heard anywhere. His lead-ins between tracks 4 through 9 are mind-bogglingly excellent, and then... the set degenerates into another annoying beat that continues through several full tracks. The remainder is spotty, though his mix of Groove Armada's "At the River" bears mention.

Oakenfold's set is, well, Oakenfold. It's neither above or below the standard for most of his other material, and difficult to differentiate from Tranceport. It doesn't spend a lot of time in my MD player, but I'll throw it on at a party. Nothing specific on this second disc jumps to mind.

I think this set is worth buying just for the incredible zone Fatboy Slim hits in the middle of the first disc, but I suspect not everyone would agree with me. Be sure to listen before you buy this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars great paul okenfold. OK If you like fatboy slim
I was very disappointed when I played disk 1 in the car on the way home from the music store. Then I played disk 2 and I felt better, a lot better. To me, It's worth the price of the set. (Note the 5 stars)

I didn't check out Paul Okenfold's mixes till he was rated best in the world by "Details?" and I bought TrancePort. This is better than TrancePort.

I guess I don't like Fatboy Slim too much. Although I have liked a couple of his other CDs like "You've come a long way baby." I have them all I think. I didn't like this CD at all.

FYI: I like Trance (Sahsa, John Digweed), NewAge (Enigma, Euphoria), Breakbeat (DJ Icey, Kurtis Mantronik, Micro), Techno Industrial (NIN, Front 242) and Chemical Bros. I really really liked the first Chemical Brothers, and the "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" mix album. I don't like Prodigy as much.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is Comical!!!
Boy, do I love this. Fatboy Slim tears it up on his CD, Oakenfold continues to put me to sleep!!! All I have to say is, if you have the extra money to drop on these CDs, buy it for Fatboy Slim's Disc. Truely one of his better...

4-0 out of 5 stars Two genres, two discs, two different moods
First of all, if you've never been exposed to electronic music, buy this double CD set. It is a rarity among dance mix compilations since it includes two popular but very different styles of dance mixed by two of the biggest DJs in the world. Almost all other dance mix sets contain one style exclusively, so this album is truly a 2-for-1 deal.
If you happen to be an electronica guru, this compilation may not whet your thirst for innovation. The first CD, Fatboy Slim's big beat mix, sounds dated, despite being fairly high energy. True, there are it's fine points, such as the few tracks in the middle of the mix that create an enjoyable climax, but as a whole the mix sounds old and worn. Unless you're a truly big Fatboy Slim fan, his mix probably will have you hitting the "skip" button on your CD player over and over again to escape the repetition of annoying beats.
As for the Oakenfold mix, it's the reason I gave the album 4 stars. Stand-alone, this CD is one of the best trance mixes to come out just before the trance genre began to flood with exhausted, overplayed, producer driven stagnation. Some critics have panned the Oakenfold mix claiming the song selection was second rate. I could not disagree more. Most of the songs are wonderful selections on their own right, utilizing pure emotion. The CD begins with a surrealistic soundbyte of a New York Thanksgiving day television weathercast, which quickly builds into an energetic hill with the likes of "The Spirit" and "Free". The 3 song climax is among the best I've ever heard, and one that can't be missed. Of note is Solarstone's "Seven Cities", which literally makes the listener feel as if he/she is truly on an emotional ride. The closing two songs on the mix are a wonderful cool-down, of note is "Viola" which is one of the best late night driving songs ever.
Overall I think it's a ...investment well worth the cost.

3-0 out of 5 stars big beat and trance together?
Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold are two of the biggest dj's out there right now, producing great mix cd's and doing sellout shows. so where did they go wrong on this album???

The first disc, the Fatboy Slim essential mix, rolls with the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Art Of Noise, Groove Armada, and of course Fatboy Slim. Each track follows right on into each other but no track is very similar to another. Pinpointing the genre of this disk would be difficult. If you've ever heard Fatboy live, you know what I mean. Funky swelling guitars, disco beats, and twisted vocals fill the air with sound as this disc wanders on. While his "On The Floor At The Boutique" mix had a bit more personality, this mix has more big tracks. The highlights are Fatboy's own "Everybody Loves A Carnival" (very similar to "Everybody Needs A 303"), Mr. Spring's funky "Blaxtraxx 3", Underworld's "Born Slippy" (very tweaked by Slim), and the closer with Groove Armada's "At The River" is the best part of the album. In my opinion, this disk is much better than the staggering disk2.

Disk 2 is Oakenfold's mix. While Oakey has been known for playing the big tracks everybody likes, I don't know what he was trying to do with this mix. His almost blasphemist use of "The Baguio Track" and the sickly tech-pop of "Free" and "Perfect State" make this disk unaccomlished. The best part of the mix comes on tracks 7-9 where his real talent finally begins to show with the strings in "Another Day" building up to heavy emotional trance on the awesome "Flesh" and "Seven Cities", the latter being the best track on the album by far. That vibe is way too soon deminished with the slow, housey closing tracks, which sound disturbingly out of place. His other mixes ("Tranceport", "GU004: Oslo", and "Another World") are MUCH better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gatecrasher UK Rocks!
This was an impulse buy Period. Listened to it a few times but then it got to me. First set started with Garbage's When I Grow Up and it just blew me away. Track 5 - Orkidea's Unity is especially cool - the synthesiser tunes! Dang! Aurora's Hear You Calling on CD2 was way cool too. Gatecrasher was the FIRST Dance Trance Compilation I've bouught and I've not regretted it! I've already Got DISKO TECH and it's a great CD too. Starts with some Classical (music) tunes. Wow.!

Need I say more?

5-0 out of 5 stars !
This is the Porsche 911 of the genre, period. The set is a little bit pricey but if you're into techno/house/trance at all, you'll be more into it after having listened to Gatecrasher Red.

The Gatecrasher DJ's somehow pack more energy into this set than in any mix compilation I've found anywhere. Apart from the manic energy level of the set, the mix is also excellent in that there is always at least one minute or so of the original vocals and bass line; with too many mixes, there's only a 15- or 20-second long sample of the original song before the foray into the DJ's particular mix rendition, or the opposite, not much mix at all. The segues between tracks are also brilliant, and the CD tracks are put together as one continuous mix, rather than tracks being separated. I guess I would call the music "trance", but it's definitely not the American flavor of trance, highly commercialized, overpriced, mediocre on quality. Oh, make sure you buy the Sony International Import Gatecrasher Red, not the US version; the tracks are different, I've heard.

Anyway, the energy in both CD's is PHENOMENAL. I suggest JBL or Bang & Olafsen speakers to go along with it. Cheers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Is there anything better?
Driving beats, soaring synthesizers, and a soothing rhythm is the only honest description of Gatecrasher Red. A friend gave me Red in early 2002 and since then I have gone on a mad buying spree with the hope that I'll find an album that parallels Red. An album that inspires and uplifts you each time you pop it into your CD player. An album where you continually hear new and exciting parts even though you have previously listened to it innumerable times. An album that stands the test of time and remains today one of my favorite albums. I have found many albums that try, and are close, to paralleling Red, yet my efforts have been in vain. Gatecrasher Red is entirely unique and original, as far as trance goes, and will pay you back in the full with the many joyous moments that you will have from listening to this album. Do yourself a favor and buy this album... you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The start for me
This album started me into trance music, and serves as a constant reminder of what all music mixes should be. I started out liking "plasma," but as my tastes evolved, I liked "future" more and more. I still listen to this set endlessly, as it really gets at your emotions like good music should.

4-0 out of 5 stars I believe what I was told about Red!
Okay first off Red is a great album! That said now let's cover the whys and hows.
Red has remixes of some of my favorite artists: Robert Miles, Garbage, ATB, PVD, Fatboy Slim, DJ Tiesto, LoveChild, and Basic Avalon. WOW!
Miles is ambient and his songs are awesome, having them remixed really brings out his talents. Garbage, well her voice says it all! I'll be seeing Garbage in concert May 17th. Should be a blast!!
ATB, PVD, and Fatboy Slim: I love all three for different reasons. Paul Van Dyk was introduced to me right beside Paul Oakenfold. Between the two, I'd have to say I enjoy Oakenfold more than PVD's style. These artists were good before the remixes. Now that they've been remixed at Gatecrasher, they sound even more awesome than I thought they could be!
I would have to say that Red and Digital are perfect for parties.

Wet is great for chilling out and working on projects with it playing in the background. If you do artwork or write, listen to Wet in the background. I've found it very relaxing.

The Red CD is only for those who love collecting trance. It's definitely a highly ranked album. But the songs are faded and mixed together & into each other, only buy this album if you like Gatecrasher and their styles, or if you want something to play during trance parties/DJing for a weekend. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Quite a few tracks I don't recall?
WHich seems odd for that time period. I was a pretty big music fan, had tons of albums and knew who was who, etc. So, I am surprised to encounter songs I don't recall at all.

3-0 out of 5 stars only a few good songs
This CD only has a few good songs most notably Ah-Ha "take on me". The rest of the CD I kind of find myself scrolling through the tracks. Skip buying, it is not worht it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Awesome 80's - Revisited
This CD is a great means of traveling back to the 80's, if only for a little while. The people who would benefit from this the most will probably be those who grew up in the '80's and long to hear the music of that time period. It is a compilation of a variety of songs some of which are less likely to be seen in "Top Hits" sort of compilations, but still represent the decade well. Don't be suprised if this CD may end up on your "Favorites" pile.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONLY ONE DECADE FRIENDS -80'S ROCK.FAVOR DARLINGS

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this!
Where else are you going to get this many great 80s songs on one CD? Listen to it, and if you're not reminiscing immediately, you must be under twelve. (If you are under twelve, then you should listen to this anyway, and find out what all the fuss is about.) Everything's catchy (although I wish they hadn't included the annoying "I Can't Wait", which appears in every other 80s compilation anyway) and will have you moving your feet. Definitely worth your time! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Disco Hits at bargain Price!
First of all let me say that reviewer Larry Reader doesn't know what he's talking about! Songs such as Gloria Gaynor's "Never Can Say Goodbye", Michael Zager's "Let's All Chant", Village People's "In The Navy", etc were all big hits! I was a club goer in the 70's and 80's and believe me most of the songs were played alot in all the clubs I went to. This collection contains some extended versions such as "Livin' it Up" - Bell and James, "Let's All Chant" - Michael Zager Band, "Dance wit Me" - Rick James, etc. For the price alone this is a nice collection for disco lovers. Buy it and enjoy! Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars HAPPINESS
Michael Zager's "Let's All Chant" was THE underground dance classic of 1978, while Teena Marie's Square Biz and the Rick James song are lovely bubbling slabs of funk, In The Navy by Village People is real singalong pop disco, as is the Pointer Sisters track, and Never Can Say Goodbye was of course a huge pop hit. I think this is a great collection from an era when dance music still had style, soul and personality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's Larry Reader been all these years? This cd jumps!
UNKNOWNS? I'm not sure how old Larry is, but I'm a 40 year old ex-nightclub disc jockey. ALL of these songs are great. Ollie and Jerry was a huge hit for me, as were Never Can Say Goodbye, Sugar Pie HoneyBunch, Let's All Chant, Square Biz...etc. I'd have to say that anyone who's looking for classic dance tracks would appreciate this cd. Some of the tracks on this cd are a little more familiar than others by title, but you'll remember them all once you listen to them!

1-0 out of 5 stars Songs that never made it
This CD should be named "Songs That Never Made It". Except for 2 tracks (Jump and Heavan Knows),which are available on other volumes, the songs on this CD are all unknowns for a very good reason. It would be interesting to know the names of the DJ's who thought these were their "Favorite Pix".

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Stop Moving!
If you never own another dance CD, this is the one to buy! It contains an extra long version of Lady T's (Teena Marie) best dance song "Square Biz" along with an extra long version of Donna Summer's "Heaven Knows". Who can forget the quintessential Friday at work music "Livin' It Up (Friday Night)" by Bell & James that got you excited about the weekend. Every song on this CD is great although I could have done without the last track. Other than that, every song would be an excellent addition to anyone's dance or workout collection for that matter. You can't go wrong with this one! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars awful sound quality
while this cd has a great selection of songs from the heyday of disco the sound quality was very poor. In almost every track there are dead spots where the music stops playing for several seconds. At first I thought vibration was making my cd player skip, but I played the disc in 4 different players with the same disappointing results. The sound quality is as I said poor, sounds like a cd someone burned on their home pc. I would look elsewhere for collections to purchase--specifically from companies that have a track record to go by(Sony, Rhino etc.) I gave it 2 stars only for the song selection. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mtv doesn't have the right!
Mtv doesn't have the right to even pretend they know whattechno music is. Come on, DJ Skribble is so bad it's not even funny, and the only thing they know how to play is Barfy Spears and the Skankstreet Boys. This collection does have some good artists on it, that's why it gets 3 stars. The Chemical Bros., Fluke, Underworld, Aphex Twin, Orbital, And Prodigy are all great musicians, but the thing is MTV just slapped all this together in one big sticky mess. How bad is the world when Underworld is anywhere near Atari Teenage Riot (or as I call them, Atari Barfage Riot.) The good songs on here are okay, but nothing special. Any fan of these artists can find these songs on their CD's. They could have at least had remixes or something special on them. The way this CD is set up, there is virtually no reason someone would have to rush out and buy this CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars An artifact of '97 Electronica
It's funny, in looking back at this CD, I feel some peculiar nostalgia in listening to what folks in 1997 believed was the future of music.

As for the content, there are some essentials. Underworld's "Pearl's Girl" still melts my cortex with its synth line that ebbs like amniotic fluid. The tracks by Photek and Apex Twin are still great abstract electronica(see the Mille Plateaux label for further excursions.) There are also some overproduced misfires like the Chemical Brothers remix of "Voodoo People and the Chrystal Method's work that sounds like Musak for future "extreme sports" commericals(whoops! it did.)

Overall, Amp marks a time when MTV had this brief period of innovation before the advent of the Boy Bands and Total Request Live.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the BEST electronic compilations
First that all, I'm an electronic music fan from Colombia. I remember that my first SERIOUS contact with electronic music was the AMP TV show, via cable television, way back to 1996. In south america, just like in the U.S. the fresh new sound of the AMP TV show captivated a lot of people like me. And just like in the U.S., here in Colombia, finding good quality electronic music was a lot harder than now...

So when this CD came out, I ordered it in a music store that worked with imports, and WOW... even now after six years, few discs on my collection have the ammount of quality that this one has. It has the biggest artists in electronic music, as well as some of their most famous tracks. Of course, this cd may not be of the likeness of the "bang-bang-bang-boom-boom-boom" techno-fans, because every track on this album is pure flowing style. Real quality. Buy it NOW.

5-0 out of 5 stars the original gangsta
This CD's a great starting point and nothing more. it was best back in 97 in my friend's car when we first heard aphex twin and atari teenage riot and laughed it off, only to end up putting it back on later. before circuit city came along and labeled it "electronica" and god knows what else, this was the best starting point for american listeners to get into british techno. only a few stinkers out of an otherwise very diverse (drum 'n bass, chaos, cyberPUNKROCK, straight up big beat) and catchy bunch, sure to sell any disbeliever after time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Experimental MTV?YES!
Can you believe I have owned this CD since 1997? I stumbled across AMP one Sunday night after watching 120 Minutes. On AMP, I was exposed to for the first time Prodigy, the Chemical Brothers, Future Sound of London and many other cutting edge artists. From that moment on, I knew I had to have the CD! I agree with the other reviewers here, it is a taste of what MTV in the US can be if they chose to get back their experimental and groundbreaking roots. With songs from the likes of Goldie, the Chemical Brothers, Underworld and the now infamous Prodigy...this CD gives you an overview of the first AMP shows. I can tell you, all of these groups are still very much popular here in Europe and are not "One Hit Wonders" by any means. If you want a taste of experiemental MTV before the Nu-Metal and Boy Band take over of 1998, respectively, then pick up this CD, you wont regret it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Euro NRG At Its Best!
As a fan of the Euro NRG sound, it's a treat to see that one of the leaders of the sound (SAIFAM Italy) is paying tribute to the 80s with some great new productions. Mauro Farina & Factory Team are in top form here, as can be seen in NRG classics "It's A Sin," "Take On Me," and "Neverending Story" among others. It's nice to see that a remix of Divine made it on and a song I haven't heard in nearly 20 years "Vamos A La Playa" is great fun. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love This CD!
When I heard that the label that released the Let's Hear It For The Boy CDs also put out a CD with dance mixes of hits from the 80s (my favorite decade), I had to get it. Great energy and great mixes of some of my favorite 80s hits ("Venus," "Neverending Story," "Respectable," "Like A Prayer." A must have!

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic NRG
Good selection from the vaults of TSR. All but the last 3 are the org. US 12" mixes. The last 2 seem to be misplaced on this CD. Weekend sounds like a rip-off of Paul Parker, Eastbound Expressway, with Kraftwerk on acid. Thankfully its short. Most of the songs come from Europe via the Record Shack label in England. The disc whould have received 5 stars if they whould have tossed out the last 2 fillers and placed the org. mix of "Stop". That tune had an incredble break not found here. Overall, great party tracks from mid-eighties. Another good sourse of this style is "Record Shack Presents" 1&2. Both have 2 discs of the same 80's style and full length. Well worth the money if able to find them.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SELECTION - ORIGINAL 12" VERSIONS-ORIGINAL STARS
What a Great selection of Dance Hits. This is the way the dance music sounded in the Clubs during the 80's. TSR released SO many great tunes it is a shame they didn't make this a 2 disc compilation. BUY IT NOW!

5-0 out of 5 stars A slice of 80's NRG
Perfect collection of 80s hi-energy songs all in their 12" extended glory! A few of these extended mixes are not available anywhere else but on this disc. From the Sylvester-ish soul of Shawn Benson's "Secluded" to the quirky fun of Magazine 60's "Don Quichotte", you can't go wrong with this collection of fun NRG songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best CD I Have Not Yet Heard!
I have yet to hear this CD, although, I was there on the dance floor when these songs were being played. I can hardly wait to get it in my hands, er... uh... on the CD player. Just seeing the titles of these songs brings back memories of fun in the 1980's.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Early 80's Hi-NRG...YOU FOUND IT!
This album contains my favorite songs of the early 80's "post-disco" era...The songs are in their full 12" format...songs you can't find anywhere else on CD!!! The CD is worth it just for Pamala Stanley's "Coming Out of Hiding" a rare gem found here in 12" version. These are my favourite 12" singles..."So Many Men, So Little Time", "High Energy", "Colour My Love"...HOT dance songs from end to end....perfect for dancing, exercising...Beautiful sound, beautiful tracks... ... 4-0 out of 5 stars If you were ALIVE in the 90s, you need this
This CD collection ROCKS !!! Excellent tracks, one after another on 3 CDs!!! This is a terrific collection of 90s hits.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW...this collection is actually good!
Most 90's collections have 1 or 2 hits followed by other songs that barely made the Billboard charts. ... But THIS collection actually has bona-fide, top-of-the-chart songs! I'm ordering my copy right now!

4-0 out of 5 stars Top 90's hits on three c.d's!
This particular c.d is one that will intrest anyone who is a fan of the music from the early 90's. If its the hip hop side of the decade your looking for, Vanilla Ice, M.C Hammer are just some of the names youll find. Not only is this a great c.d for the 'old school' generation, but also included are 90's love songs like, "how do you talk to angel"(Heights), "damn, i wish i was your lover"(sophie b. hawkins) and "Hold on", by Wilson Philips. Alive in the 90's has some great power ballads such as, "can you take me high enough" by damn yankees, and the infamous,"Life is a highway" by Tom Cochrane. Alive in the 90's is a one of a kind, with a ton of great hits packed into 3 discs! ... Read more

Album Description

‘The sun became as black, the moon became as blood. The revelation has begun’ …

Dead or Alive burst forth, from the ashes of Nightmares in Wax, into the UK pop charts with a raunchy version of K.C. & The Sunshine Band’s That’s The Way (I Like It). This cover may have been a ‘Cheese whiz moment’ for the enigmatic DOA front man, Pete Burns, but it was an important record for many of DOA’s fans.

Coordinating and compiling ‘Rocket’ was indeed a labour of love for us, and it was particularly satisfying to decide what bands to approach and on what songs to give them. One of our objectives with this release was to shift the focus away from their biggest hit "You Spin Me Round" (track 13) and to concentrate on the band as songwriters, by showcasing their other pop gems first. "Black Leather" (tracks 2 &14) is a prime example of this, and is a seminal track in itself, dating from the pre-DOA days as Nightmare In Wax. It’s a song that today still sells for big money on the likes of ebay and record collector.

All the artists included here took hold of the DOA mantel with flair, passion and determination. So thank you for supporting us and Dead Or Alive with your purchase of ‘Rocket’. Sit back and enjoy all the hard work contained in these interpretations. This Tribute was twenty years in the making, but only months in the realization… so watch out, here we come! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ROCKET, More DEAD Than Alive
This tribute CD was the worst I've EVER heard! It was more DEAD than alive. The music is somewhat ?OK? but the vocals are to be less desired. If your expecting a high energy remake album from ROCKET,.. DON'T WASTE YOUR $MONEY$. I was very disappointed with the arrangement of the music & the vocals. The vocals do not match with the musics output. It just sounds wrong. I made the mistake of purchasing this rotten CD only because I am a DEAD OR ALIVE fan & it's true that, "Curiosity Killed The Cat", 2 bad it didn't kill this CD. I'm going to use my copy as a coaster. There are better re-makes out there by Massive Ego & such, don't know why the producers of ROCKET would release something that sounds like it was put together in a day. Let this one stay in the grave. Oh well, you've been warned. Thanks DJ WACK "O" (Schroeder)

5-0 out of 5 stars Rockets ablast
I have been a huge fan since i was 13years old. Twenty years later, hasn't changed that.
This tribute album, for a lot of Dead or Alive fans is kinda a confirmation of sorts. The group has never really spent their due in the lime light.Rocket, is brillaint music.......that moves you. Its "Simply Alive" if your not up and moving to "Rocket" then re-insert CD correctly! Empire State Human, should take a bow.
I am sure Mr.Pete Burns is very pleased with the love and efforts to this project. So, run out and get a copy soon...
It really is that good!!

4-0 out of 5 stars not too shabby for remakes
i have been a fan of dead or alive ever since i was a kid and heard you spin me round for the first time i have loved them ever since. i have waited a long time for them to have a tribute album made for them i have not heard of these bands before now but i tell you i will look for most of these bands own c.d's if they are anything like the sounds of the songs they have remade here ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great selection for representing '81!
I bought this album for "Bette Davis Eyes" and didn't really pay attention to what else was on it when I purchased it. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the whole collection is great! I was not around in '81 but with music like this I wish I was. Anyone else 21 or younger ought to check out this CD for a great introduction to 80s variety! My favorites are "The One That You Love", "The Tide is High" and "9 to 5".

I will never forget my big tough brother-in-law belting every word to "9 to 5" as my sister and I watched in laughter. Buy this CD if not to get a great introduction to '81, then to laugh at the ones who know all the words! It's worth it either way!

4-0 out of 5 stars Music's Confusing Direction at the Time Shown Nicely Here
Although 1981 was the year MTV was born, the synth sound of the decade had not completely flourished yet. During this year, artists from various genres were making big moves on the charts- not just artists in new wave, but artists in R&B, soft rock, pop, country, and even disco, among other genres. BILLBOARD TOP HITS: 1981's ten selections follows that formula pretty well- new wave is represented with "The Tide is High"; R&B is represented with "Being With You"; soft rock with "The One That You Love," "Kiss on My List," "Bette Davis Eyes," and "Physical"; pop with "Jessie's Girl"; counry with "9 to 5" and "Queen of Hearts"; and disco with "Celebration."

Overall, a nice selection of songs that represents 1981, yet there are still some good (and big songs) that could have been here, like "Endless Love"; "Waiting For a Girl Like You"; "I Love a Rainy Night"; "(Just Like) Starting Over"; "Keep on Loving You"; and "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)." Most of us would have probably liked to have had a few of these songs replacing selections from this volume, but yet, a different set of ten songs could have rarely improved on defining the year as the set here does. And considering that the ten songs here are all good, anyway, they help make BILLBOARD TOP HITS: 1981 a nice collection of interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Diverse collection from '81
1981 was the year MTV was born. Despite it not getting big for a couple more years, this is where the '80s started to gain their own sound.

A great upbeat party song is "Celebration" by Kool & the Gang. Blondie's feelgood mid-tempo "Tide Is High" is one of her best. I thought Hall & Oates were better at upbeat rock than at ballads. "Kiss on My List" is a little of both. "Jesse's Girl" was Rick Springfield's biggest hit and an energetic rocker, not as 'teen idol' as it may seem. "Queen of Hearts" was perfect Pop/Country by Juice Newton, when Shania was in Elementary School.

There's a few rare tracks too. Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" is another great Pop/Country tune from the hilarious Jane Fonda movie of the same name. Though Smokey Robinson was becoming an oldie, he had a good ballad in "Being With You." Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" was another now-vanished, cute song and a guilty pleasure. The similarly styled "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes is a nice slower tune. Half the songs here were from women, which is nice too.

The only one I don't like is Air Supply's "One you Love." I like ballads quite a bit, but this one is too sappy. Still a worthy, short collection of hits.

5-0 out of 5 stars Celebrating women dominating the Billboard charts in 1981
I was wondering why this particular collection is just called "Billboard Top Hits: 1981." Usually we are told these are Rock/Pop/Dance/R&B or some specific sort of hits. But then when you look at the artists you have to admit it is hard to put Kim Carnes, Blondie, Olivia Newton-John, Dolly Parton and Jucie Newton into a single category. So this time around Billboard gives you a mix of rock, pop, country and soul representing where music was in 1981. Just looking at the titles of the Billboard collections for each year across the past couple of decades can certainly give you a sense for the shifting trends in music. This particular album begins with "Bette Davis Eyes" by Kim Carnes and ends with Kool & The Game's signature tune "Celebration." I was rating this collection at a 4.5 and ended up rounding up because none of the songs fall into that horrible category of being ones you never remember having heard way back when. The closer you get to the present the harder it is to actually find five songs on a collection you would like to add to your music library, given how many hundreds of CDs you already own. But the ten songs included here have a good shot at meeting the five song criteria.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great tunes! Great sound!
Rhino has remastered 10 classic pop singles from one of pop radio's last great years. Before radio splintered into half a dozen different (but very strict) formats, the top 40 stations of the time played whatever their listeners wanted to hear, be it pop, rock, R&B or country. This disc is a great cross section of the glory that was Top 40 radio during Reagan's first term of office. Kim Carnes had the record of the year and it still sounds great today. Rick Springfield started his comeback and Air Supply had yet to grow stale. Smokey had possibly his all time greatest solo hit this year. Dolly Parton sang a great song that topped both country and pop lists. Blondie continued to show their diversity. Hall and Oates were at the top of their game. Olivia Newton-John plateaued in popularity. Juice Newton came roaring back with a string of hits. Kool & The Gang released the party anthem of the century. Not bad for a year that is generally regarded as "bland" for being post-punk and pre-new wave. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this collection 18 stars
I dj'd at college radio stations for 5 years in the late '80s, and was always pleasantly excited when I found a Wax Trax! label in the New bin. (Unfortunately, I usually did my shows in the dark and thought the name was "Wax Traxi" for the longest time!) The label was a mainstay of industrial music, and founders Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher consistently managed to sign and produce the most exciting musicians of the time -- the many incarnations of dear troubled genius Al Jourgensen, The Young Gods, FLA, Coil, Controlled Bleeding, Doubting Thomas, A Split Second, Lead Into Gold, Psychic TV, Foetus -- they are all here on three great discs packed with music that makes you want to move and feel. Disc One, Track One: Trent Reznor covers Black Sabbath's 'Supernaut' with 1000 Homo DJs -- a version previously unreleased, and then you are zipping through Sister Machine Gun and The Young Gods and oh so many more seminal industrial bands. Divine puts the "fun" in funky with "The Name Game", the label's second release. I was also happy to hear a few groups that had somehow slipped past me the first time around, like Wreck. I had a great time listening to this collection and am still listening to it. You can put in any of the three discs and be happy for a long time.

The packaging is beautiful -- a heavyweight black box covered with hip lettering and disturbing images; three black CD cases containing labeled discs and a listing with artist, cut, time and version information; and a terrific booklet that relates the anecdotal history of Wax Trax! -- it's artistically interesting as well as substantive and entertaining.

If you enjoy industrial music, you cannot go wrong with this incredible collection of the music and people that started it all. And why not put a few bucks into the pockets of the guys who loved the music more than the profits?

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money!
This Chicago-based record label compilation is an awesome chunk of the work done by most of the best industrial bands that came out of N. America and Europe in the 80s. Very interesting and innovative music- fans of industrial music or darker techno should like most of this stuff quite a bit.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wee handbook for the perplexed
This 3 CD set offers an excellent overview of the artists that made WaxTrax! Records synonymous with beautiful, challenging music. Coil, Thrill Kill Kult, Meat Beat Manifesto, Ministry, KMFDM, Pig, RevCo, even some early Frontline Assembly is featured on this Box. And for you NIN fans, there's even the original version of 1,000 Homo DJs' 'Supernaut' with Trent Reznor on vox. The enclosed booklet encapsulates the WT! history, including the TVT buyout. Overall, a great mix of music and information about the early days in Chicago that is well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this now!!
If you have only recently discovered industrial, you need this cd. Take a listen to the masters! They just don't make music like this any more. Hear KMFDM and TKK at thier finest. A truely nessary addition to every collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars The start of indust. music in the chicago underground and US
If I could rate this compilation any higher I would instantly. There is nothing quite like popping in disc 1 and hearing Trent Reznor screaming his lungs out to a Black Sabbath song and knowing that there are 30 more songs after that one. Everything from the classically punk, Strike Under, to the ultimately twisted likes of Pig and Pankow. Not to mention that this compilation holds in it the very reason industrial music has made it as far as it has in the past years. If it wasn't for WaxTrax! and the Chi-town underground.. the only people trying to figure out what KMFDM (Kein Mehrheit Fur Die Mitleid) stands for would be a bunch of germans. Long live Alien Jourgensen, TKK, Sister Machine Gun (the list goes on), and finally...JIM AND DANNIE... may they be immortalised as music industry gods. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Appreciation...
Just a note to the previous reviewer... *all* appreciation is in the mind, not 'in the sound'. The sound is heard in the mind. That said, some will appreciate this stuff and some will not. In my opinion, the music isn't even important... the Moog (and the artists who created and played these sounds) are the stars of the show. Listening to this music is like watching a (pretty bad) movie starring a great actor... In my opinion, the unique and magical sound of the Moog (when played by people who know what they're doing) can redeem the worst, cheesiest song and make it into a masterpiece.

If you like that unique analog Moog sound, you'll probably like this -- it's that simple. But please, don't buy it mainly for the music -- likely you'll be disappointed. If you buy it because you love the sound of the Moog, you're sure to be rewarded.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Contrived and Forced Look at a Fascinating Genre
I suppose if you've never ever heard of a moog record this would be a decent place to start. My feeling from listening to the album is that it was compiled by an MTV VJ or turned about by the fad machine associated with MTV...
The person who stated that it was essentially a Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley copilation was absolutely correct. Thats what makes this record so bad...Perry and Kingsley were pioneers, but they made the bulk of their electronic music before the moog(on things like the Ondes-Martenot that you never hear of anymore)and a good portion of their music is more important because of their innovative use of tape-loops in pop music...not their use of the moog. Check out perrey and kingsley's "The In Sound from Way Out" to see what I mean.
Martin Denny is on here, god knows why...he made about one moog album, and it was alot of his most boring stuff. His records are still all over thrift stores, go dig if you're interested. Hugo Montenegro was great, and I believe his moog album is still in print, if not, its on ebay for not alot. Command Records has two of the best "greatest of" albums for this genre: Electronic Eclections with Dick Hyman(whom I consider to be tops for all around cheesiness) and Richard Hayward and Walter Sears who did a version of Girl From Ipanema that gives me chills every time. As far as contemporaries, check out the Moog Cookbook-Ye Olde Spaceband, and AIR-Moon Safari...from the 90s, and still a great example of moog related music.
In closing, if you're interested in this genre, more power too you, but this is a novelty collection for rich kids who'll go on to whatever gets fashionable next week. I'm not an expert but i've got a collection of a couple hundred records, you can find alot more interesting, higher quality examples of Moog Records.
email me if you'd like some title

3-0 out of 5 stars Not all it could be and I ain't biting
Though I'd certainly describe this as a good, fun CD, it lacks extremely necessary artists in the Moog (rhymes with Pogue, like the band the Pogues) era. As described by Disinformation Records representative Richard Metzger in the CD's liner notes, those who know their Moog will be severely disappointed in this collection of classics. You do get a good number of out-of-print hits from artists whose records would cost extreme amounts on auction sites and collector conventions, but there's no diversity and some of the best artists are completely absent. There is no Bruce Haack, (though he is briefly mentioned in the liners (where his name is misspelled!!)), no Wendy Carlos (or Walter Carlos!!), not even any Raymond Scott, the original creator of the prototype Moog later popularlized. Many of the tracks included are covers of Hollywood tunes and classical arrangements, and the last track is a completely worthless Fatboy Slim remix of E.V.R. Why is it included on a 60's and 70's hits CD? Who knows, maybe he's a shareholder...

Anyways, here's a list of all the performers as they appear on the CD:
1)Hot Butter
2)Perrey-Kingsley
3)Jean Jacques Perrey
4)Richard Hayman
5)Martin Denny
6)Perrey-Kingsley
7)Gil Trythall
8)Enoch Light and the Light Brigade
9)Perrey Kingsley
10)Armando Travaioli
11)Perrey-Kingsley
12)Elektrik Cokernut
13)Armando Travaioli
14)Elektrik Cokernut
15)First Moog Quartet
16)Hugo Montenegro and his Orchestra
17)Dick Hyman
18)First Moog Quartet
19)Jean Jacques Perrey (remixed)

It's also helpful to note that many of these groups were actually organized by Perrey and/or Kingsley. In effect, this is nearly a best of Perrey and Kingsley CD! The label rep goes to all the trouble of claiming he wants to reissue OOP and expensive classic tunes, but he only has like 3 artists on here, not to mention the lame Fatboy Slim remix.

Despite all the huge flaws in this release, it's still a fun listen. There are only one or two tracks on here that aren't worth the time, and even the covers are fun. I'd recommend it to those of you who aren't huge Moog fans, but not to the hardcore followers (though you guys probably know not to buy it already). For those who are still learning ot beauty of the Moog synth, I suppose I'd recommend this. The actual records are far too expensive now, so go ahead and pick up the cheap comp and see what you think before shelling out major cash...

2-0 out of 5 stars It is 2002 and it is time for something new.....
.........and this is not it!
The 2 cuts that stand out are Popcorn by Hot Butter and E.V.R. by Jean Jacques Perrey. The rest is a pile headache inducing kitsch. The appreciation of this quaint style of music lies purely in the mind and not in it's sound. No matter what is claimed, this stuff did not influence Krafwerk and should be sent back to the rubbish bin as it is begining to smell. Wendy Carlos was a pioneer on many fronts, but Bach's music is what makes her recordings last. The tracks included here are not even composition they are just pastiche.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Fun Fun
Although this compilation of vintage electronic music starts out as a fun and highly enjoyable listening experience, it begins to drag and becomes somewhat annoying towards the end. Perhaps it would have been better as a shorter album, omitting inferior tracks such as "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" by Gil Trythall (one too many electronic hoedowns), and both of Electrik Cokernut's unintelligent covers of pop songs ("Jeepster" & "Back Off Boogaloo"). The good songs are very good, e.g. "E.V.A." by Jean Jacques Perrey, which sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday, and "Bond St." by Enoch Light and the Light Brigade which, although it barely features any synthesizers, is a highly entertaining version of the Burt Bacharach tune. But many of the inferior tracks become a chore to sit through, especially when you begin to feel, "Haven't I heard this before?". Despite its flaws, I would still recommend this to anyone interested in the origins of modern electronic music, anyone who wants the song "Popcorn", or anyone who loves Disneyland ("Baroque Hoedown" is the theme song to.....now with an electronically enhanced voice...."Disneyland Main Street Electrical Parade!"). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Trance Anthems from Germany
This mix is superb. Provided by the famous German DJ Talla 2XLC, it will take you on a true journey of human emotions -- a journey whose beauty cannot be described, but only heard. While some tracks are rather dark and ominous ("The Arrival", "Are You Ready"), others -- especially "Relieve My Pain", "Children of Paradise", "Reminisce Over You", "Memories" -- will lift you up to the world of thoughts and reminiscences, where you will see a light of hope on the horizon. If there is such an expression as "music for the soul," then it fits this CD perfectly.

The tempo is not extremely fast, and Talla's mixing is excellent. My only complaint is that the CD was partitioned into tracks incorrectly in some places (e.g. Track 6 starts in the middle of the 6th song). In all other respects, however, this CD is extremely impressive. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars relieve my pain
in a few words, this cd rocks. it is well mixed by one of the best dj in the world of trance. talla 2xlc is awesome from trac 1 through 12.

5-0 out of 5 stars ICU Scores Again
If you have heard any of the other 2 ICU Generation Trance cd's and liked them, then you have got to get this cd. The Generation Trance cds are some of the best compilations out there (in my opinion). And The 3rd installment in this series keeps the pace perfectly. This cd will take you to a whole other world. It all starts with the song "are you ready" by by DJ chris, which gets you prepared for a journey of such fantastic colors and sounds, and then runs into one of my favorite songs on the cd "revelation" by chapter&Page, though it does have seemingly dark undertones, its all in preperation of the rest of the album and i personally love it! Then its time to take "the voyage" by sean dexter vs. de la ray. This song will take you to the new segment of the cd which is the journey to the new place (world). 3 GREAT song later we have "The arrival" by traveller. This takes us to the happier and more uplifting part of the cd which is very energetic and enjoyable. It seems to me like the cd starts on earth, and then you journey to a new world of peace and unity (hence the words of "reminisce over you") And it all comes to a fantastic conclusion with Electras "Hear me Feel me" Which is a wonderful closing number. Friends, enemies, people i don't know. YOU MUST GET THIS CD. It is essential to me, so i figure it must be good. I rated this cd 5 stars and an (A+). Yes, its my first time giving away a plus ;) This cd gets it because it makes you feel as though you are travelling. !!!!OH!!! and dont skip songs, you will lose alot of the feeling!!!! If you hear this you will want the rest of the GT2000 cds', they are all good might i add.

5-0 out of 5 stars Evil Genius
If you're a fan of the other two generation Trance 2000 episodes this one won't let you down. Not as good as the second episode, but right up there with the first, much darker then both though.

I played this CD for my girlfriend and it made her stomach hurt it was so evil sounding. I love it thought all the dark sounds, especially the voice in the "Revelation". That's enough to send chills down any ones spine. Not to worry though if you not into the darkness, after it reaches "The Voyage", it turns the darkness into beauty, and the warm happy feelings come alive the rest of the CD.

Lots of good hard tracks, very original. This disk doesn't get boring or annoying. It keeps changing enough to keep me interested. I didn't like it too much when I first got it, maybe because of the intimate doom that lingers over the first three tracks, but the more I listened to it the more I grew to love it. Excellent Trance Anthems, so if you're an anthem fan, especially if you like darkness spun into your sets, this would be worth checking out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting Trance
This Cd is the first in the Generation Trance 2000 set that I have heard and let me say that it is some of the most original track compilations that I have yet to hear on a cd. The first 3 tracks are in minor keys as opposed to the major key candy trance that the majority of major label djs are spinning today. The minor keys give the first three tracks a haunting, almost scary mood to them...until track 4 which has a beautiful piano solo before the progressive break that pulls all of the emotion within you to the next level. From there on the mix continues the explosion, but without entering the realm of cheese. Hard to find major label stuff that does that nowadays. All in all If you enjoy anthem trance mixes but are tired of hearing dreaming, skydive, and the other superpopular tracks today, give this one a try. I sincerly doubt you will be dissapointed. 5 stars. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Put On Your Dancing Shoes!
Some great tunes that will make the straight crowd get into the dance mood as well. Standouts include sexy voiced Paul Parker's rendition of "Wicked Game" and the equally shake your groove thang "All The Places" by BND. Gloria Gaynor's gay anthem "I Am What I Am",the infectious move your booty "You Look Like The Sun" by 2 Colors and Gala's move your feet and body to "Freed From Desire" make this a sure bet and a great buy. And if that isn't enough....the hunk on the CD cover is added incentive!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome party album for me,Eric Smith!!
Being openely gay,I appreciate the fact that they make gay dance compilation records. When I am not listening to true musical genius' such as Will Smith, Backstreet Boys, and Mariah Carey(I Love Listening To Whining),I just dance around abd be gay.Me and my boyfriend love to make out while this cd is playing because it really gets us in the mood.Whenever i go to gay strip clubs,I love it when they play this music, buy it now.Take it from me,Eric Smith,This album is amazing.By e Bye good friends!

5-0 out of 5 stars "I really like to spoon with this CD on!," Rod L.
This CD is one of my favorites. When my midnight mistress comes over, we like to "jam" and "slam" to this CD. Excuse me for not metioning my last name cause I am in the closet right now. This CD just rocks, so buy it now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Horrible title for a CD !
The track listing is great and varied. Plus, it's great to findly hear a song on a dance compilation from Ms. BARBARA(Underated)TUCKER.

The only thing that lowered my rating for this CD was the horrible "predictable" art work on the cover jacket along with the STEREOTYPICAL TITLE....both should drop.
The problem with this CD is not the content but it is the packaging.

How can any label believe they'll mass distribute such a title and cover jacket to a homophobic middle America ?

Does that label think we all "gay dance" while listening to the songs on this compilation ?
I'd like to learn what exactly qualifies a songs as a quote " A GAY DANCE SONG " !

Truly the Dumbest title for a CD....EVER !

1-0 out of 5 stars Utterly terrible, but would make a great gag gift
Uggh, 2 discs of vapid dance music... play it at a party and watch people leave. ... Read more

For all the millennial hoo-hah he wrapped his music in, L.T.J. Bukem never made it to the future, only holding on to his pop moment for, well, a moment. By the time Americans heard his easy-listening version of jungle, the Brits had stopped listening. That shouldn't undercut the importance of what he did, though (hey, junglists need to feel classy, too), and there's no better showcase for his urbane aesthetic than this '96 two-CD compilation, which features Bukem mixing the likes of Adam F and DJ Trace while MC Conrad gooses the music with his unmistakably minimalist interjections. "The beats go forward / The beats go back," Conrad announces at one point. Give Bukem and his acolytes credit: though their synth pads could get a bit gooey, they snuck some unpredictable rhythm tracks beneath the gauze. Other meaningful verse from two guys who always understood that you can shake a dance floor without beating it over the head: "You like the, you like the / Beats so loud / I like to, I like to / Move the crowd." --Jeff Salamon ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Different, but still excellent.
I really enjoy LTJ Bukem's brand of jungle, and this is no exception. There is a slightly different sound here than on his GLO releases, however. This compilation is a little harder, and a little less lush than say your typical Progression Sessions release. Here it seems Bukem focused on more on bass and breaks than on the swooning atmospherics that made classics like Logical Progression so popular. This is not a bad thing. Quality tracks like Orca's "Discovery", and Future Sound Of Hardcore's "Desire" and "Euphoria" are easy highlights. This is CD2. CD1 on the other hand, which features MC Conrad's horrid chanting, or rapping, or whatever you call it, is hardly listenable just because of that (which is the reason the whole compilation only received 3 stars. As a cheaper, single disc compilation featuring only CD2, the compilation would receive 4 stars).

Fans of other Bukem CD's might enjoy this, but I'd recommend Logical Progression as a more suitable starting point for those just beginning to explore his catalouge.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing, mindblowing
the maximum in chill, dance, and heart-stopping beats. this album makes my heart flutter, and my mind go to crazy places. without drugs, i might add. absolutely amazing, and mc conrads vocals are just about the best ive ever heard. absolutely incredible. im in love with this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars an awesome classic
This has to be one of my favorite mix CDs of all time. Early intelligent d'n'b. Really drummy just like i like it. This is one of the earlier conrad/bukem CDs and in my opinion one of the best. If you like bukem this is a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars great jungle from LTJ -- as expected
If you are a d'n'f fan get this cd. If you are a LTJ fan don't wait.

I am a big time LTJ fan, but don't let that thought underestimate the importance of this cd. Featuring many all time progressive jungle classics this cd is a must have for everyone who enjoys electronic music out there. Oh MC Conrad is magnificinet as always. You will especially enjoy his words rythmically blending to the beats and few lyrics of (Adam F's) Circles. The other tracks are great too. Don't wait just buy it.

2-0 out of 5 stars All Sounds the Same
Every song on this 2 CD compilation sounds the same; it's an ok song, but do you really want to hear it for 1 & 1/2 hours? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem: Lesser-Known Disco Classics in Full-Length Versions
Volume 3 may be the high-point of the excellent Disco Nights series, a true value offering mostly full-length versions of beloved disco classics. This volume focuses on Eurodisco, which was ultra-melodic,smooth, and very futuristic for the time. And what variety - the eerie "Supernature", the gospel-tinged "You Make Me Feel/Mighty Real," the campy "I Love America", the almost orch
