This compilation left me feeling disappointed. The mix weaves in different directions, putting the listener on edge, leaving him unsatisfied. Incomplete. Random. Neurotic. Inclusion of Green Velvet's "La-La-Land" totally ruined whatever goodness there was in the mix.

The album is as coherent as this review.

4-0 out of 5 stars an excellent representation of the Fabric Live sound...
This cd provides an excellent representation spanning two years of Fabriclive in London, an openminded night showcasing an array of breaks, techno, house, leftfield and other genres of electronic music. According to James Lavelle, "I wanted this mix to reflect the diversity and sound of FABRICLIVE - past, present and future..."

The Fabric resident works his way through many of these aformentioned genres with ease throughout the course of the mix. The cd opens with Rare Earth's percussive take on the Temptations "Get Ready" and runs through classics like DJ Shadow's "Organ Donor," subsequently mixed with an excellent Quannum rap track named Divine Intervention.

The pace progressively builds into breaks such as the Chemical Brothers "Piku" which later open up into house with tracks such as Landmine "Fairytale" and Bushwacka's "The Healer"

The mix then winds back down again, closing with Lavelle's own mix of "Everything in its Right Place" by Radiohead.

Throughout the entire experience, a lot of musical ground is covered which can be considered uncommon for mix cds in general. Having seen several Lavelle's sets at Fabric, I can attest that this mix is quite an accurate portrayal of the eclectic sounds showcased by James on a weekly basis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Y'all ready to hear The Chemical Brothers?
This EP is awesome. The Title track and its two mixes rule. Electronic Battle Weapon 1 a.k.a. Don't Stop The Rock(Electronic Battle Weapon Version) is worth a listen. You should definetly turn up the bass and volume for Not Another Drugstore and These Beats Are Made For Breakin'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Justin Warfield makes this happen
If you get a chance to pick this one up, do so! I heard "Not Another Drugstore" on the "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" Mix CD, and tracked it down to this single. I totally agree that it was a shame that the song didn't make it to the DYOH album. "Not Another Drugstore" may be one of the best kept "secrets" and one of the best songs C.B's have done to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars Who is this doing this . . .
For anyone who can appreciate the wonderful world of the Chemical Brothers this single has some great tracks. Elektrobank its self is a good fast-paced track but the others give this single a personality. Like the Dust Brothers remix. If you're into the Chemical Brothers, then you will like this single.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the buy
This is one of the first Chem. Bros. CDs I bought and it led me to buy about 7 more. Elektrobank is a very technical complex well done song and the Dust Bros. Remix is awesome too. Not another Drugstore has some good freestyling action. The rest are so-so. That's about it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Such a good CD for a single...
This is by far the best Chemical single. "Elektrobank" is an amazing track. "Not Another Drugstore" is probably my favorite Chemical creation. I can't believe it didn't make "DYOH". The Dust Bros. remix is a great sample track. Every track has wigged-out guitars and fat bass. How could you resist buying it? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Micro is "the" Meistro!!!!!!!
Okay, I have been a fan of Micro's for years and years, and in his first CD "Coast to Coast", you will find that Micro has definitly been at the top of the list of Dj's ever since he started out! I don't really care for the non-stop "Breakbeat" thing, but oh my Lord!!!! This CD will blow anybody away, I guarantee it!!!! In my opinion, this is when Micro loved to show what he could do, because there is a little bit of everything burried in this CD!! The CD starts beautifully working it's way into the hit "Acid or XTC", then simply blows you away!! Buy it, even if you don't like "Breakbeats"!

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!
This CD is off the hook. If you like the funky breaks then this CD is for you. This is Micro before he found trance. Buy this CD if you ever get the chance.

5-0 out of 5 stars a little bit of this...a little bit of that...
One of Micro's earlier works, although just as good as his new stuff. 'Coast to Coast' has an incredible blend of acid house, trance, and good ol' breaks. The mix starts off well with a great remix by Omar Santana and peaks at Kingsize's breakbeat track "Acid or XTC." Although all the tracks on this mix are excellent, those two, as well as MVP's "Make Me Feel" are stand-outs. This album just goes to prove that Micro was one of the US's founding electronic dance music DJs. Overall, I would recommend this to any Micro fan, or anyone looking for a little variety in their music. ... Read more

Album Description

Visionary, Forefather, Innovator...these are terms that getthrown around all to loosely in the world of electronic music, but forcertain individuals, these descriptions apply without question. JackDangers, the veteran composer and sound sculptor behind Meat Beat Manifesto,is one of these individuals. His constantly evolving musical invention hasgenerated a long string of futuristic classics, such as "Strap Down", "GodO.D.", "Helter Skelter","Psyche Out", "Radio Babylon","Edge of No Control"and "It's the Music". Past Dangers' production/remix projects include:Public Enemy, David Bowie, Orbital, DepÍche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Coil,David Byrne, Bush, Banco de Gaia, and The Shaman. Adding to this list ofheavy hitting achievements, the single, "Prime Audio Soup" from the MBMalbum Actual Sounds and Voices, was featured in the sci-fi fantasyblockbuster, The Matrix and on its platinum-selling soundtrack. Danger'sinnovative uses of samples and breakbeats have inspired countless artists(both in the dance and hip-hop worlds), putting him in a category with othervisionary artists of the late 80's/early 90's such as Coldcut, The DustBrothers, and The Bomb Squad. R.U.O.K? , MBM's seventh album and first in 4 years, represents a healthygrowth in the innovative Meat Beat sound, and includes colloborations withturntablist of the moment, Z-Trip, and ambient legend Alex Paterson of TheOrb. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Meticulously crafted sonic mayham!
The attention to detail on this album is amazing. Even the smallest sounds in the backgrounds are created with a great amount of detail and variety.

Meat Beat takes a new direction on this album by choosing to forgo lyrics, and also not using as many vocal samples. On first listen, this can leave you wanting more, but as you listen more and notice the subtle varitions in loops, and the sound design....there's plenty going on!

Oh....let's not forget the BASS! If you don't have your bass up, or just don't have bass...get some for this record. The sub-bass is heavy and thick, and, combined with Jack's breaks, really get ya movin'!

The collaborations on this album are well-done also. Alex Patterson adds his signature sense of atmosphere, while DJ Z-Trip cuts and scratches in perfect time to Jack's grooves, to wonderful effect!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but not entirely new
Taken out of context with the rest of Jack Dangers' work, this album is a smooth, groovy, charismatic trip. The production is impeccable, the beats are right in the pocket, the ambience is full and gratifying. But many of the tracks seem to be constructed out of elements from his work on previous albums. You'll recognize many of the beats, breaks, and vocal samples and in many cases you can go back to "Subliminal Sandwich" or some other album and find them already used in much the same way. Therefore, many of these tracks seem more like remixes than orignal material. So if you're looking to discover what new and exciting concepts Jack has cooked up in his studio, you're not going to find it on RUOK. Still, it's a great listen. Nobody does this stuff quite like Meat Beat Minifesto.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best releases I've heard in awhile
RUOK is such a difficult album to discribe. As per usual, Jack Dangers has created yet another album of "beats in space" but with more emphasis on space. Though I won't claim to be an expert of Meat Beat Manifesto 101, I will say his music has ranged from hard hitting indrustral dance that would have Trent Reznor frothing at the mouth, to ambient land scapes competent with that of Future Sound of London. Inbetween that lengthy comparison lies RUOK. Its still got some funky grooves and it still feels like its lost in space, but it feels a little stripped back and less busy then some of the things I've heard in his catalog. What results is a tight, textural journey that's got rhythms to make your head move while tripping you out at the same time.

Largely on display is the sampled drum work from Lynn Farmer, who's looped syncopated rhythms largely take the forefront of the music. The drums (largely unvarried in each song) take hold of the song and push in the direction that Dangers wants it to go. And since drums largely point where the song is going, that leaves Jack and his collaborators ( The Orb's Dr. Alex Patterson and Scratch tour favorite, DJ Z-Trip) to build a sonic space around each song. From there the songs range from minimal explorations of drums and bass to wildly experimental ambient noise exposistions. And while traditional song structure is largely abondoned on this album (there is hardly a single melody on this entire album), I still find it strangely compelling, if not just for the funky drum breaks and odd, spacy textures. And while its not completely sucessful ( there are definitely some misses on this album), when RUOK hits on its mark, it definitely becomes one of the most entertaining, most thought provoking and most certainly groovy album that I've heard in a long, long time. Unique, original, and almost unclassifiable, Jack Dangers is certainly a pioneering voice after nearly 2 decades of making music who still continues to push the boundries of music. RUOK may be on his more comercially more accessable albums, but its certainly no less entertaining or compelling.

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit of a letdown
This album lacks the adventurous nature of his previous work. It's still good music but not nearly so engaging or interesting as before. If dancing to the music is your only interest than I guess this will do it for you though... I keep listening in hopes of hearing something that I've missed, but the tunes ARE more simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Come on people don't be so shallow
(...) Of course this record is brillant, its by (...) JACK DANGERS. He used some really old equipment to make this album too, and he used it to it's fulliest. For any of you doubters think about the facts. First, every drum beat in a MBM song is original, he doesn't sample that stuff. Second, besides this album he worked on a bunch of others for Tino Corp, which are awesome, so give the guy a break. Third, people like DJ Shadow, MBM, Orbital, and The Orb are originators that help techno keep it's good name. Look at all the rave crap thats out there now that people consider techno, but it is surely not. Finally, every MBM album is different and each has its strengths. Sure people seem to agree the Actual Sounds and Voices is the best, and I won't disagree, but RUOK is a new page and is still great! ANYONE who took the time to read this review please do yourself a favor and buy this CD. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars God Has Spoken
I will start off by saying I got into this CD after I had been listening to Tech Mix 2000. This is just another fine CD by Micro. It has that industrial sound, very heavy but not over powering. Micro knows how to get a groove on and knows how to use the bass. Overall, I didnt find this CD as ambiant as 2000, but its a close second. His remix of Godspeed speaks for itself. Just another CD I fell in love with. I would say Micro rivals many U.S. DJs with his style, sound, sophistication and talent.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's Micro! what did you expect?
i may be a little biased, but this album is my favorite of Micro's because it is how i first got introduced to his sound. I've had this album for almost 2 years now, and i still enjoy it completely! In his "upgrade" of the original Micro-Tech-Mix, version 2.0, Micro doesn't waste any time getting down to business. the first track is micro's own remix of fellow moonshine group cirrus' "Stop and Panic." As the next couple of tracks go by, you will notice the music getting deeper and more progressive, bringing us up to Transa's "Behind the Sun." Mixed right in after that is BT's popular cut "Godspeed," which marks the middle, and possibly the peak. following "Godspeed" are a bunch of 'okay' tracks, and Micro's journey ends with the powerful "S-Express" by Phil Fuldner. all in all, this album is quite impressive. version 2.0 got me into the Micro sound--the progressive trance, the breaks, the caffein-style...buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Put:The Best Micro Has 2 Offer
Awesome album ,full of energy and emotion ....leaves nothing to be desired, this is the one that got me n2 him in the first place....Go grab it

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Micro
Like the other reviews, the beginning of this cd is Micro . . . so it is descent; but not packing the trancy punch and vibe usual to micro's work. But like i said this is Micro, and he puts a mindblowing remainder of the cd. The cool, loungy feel of BT with his own style incorporated, and doesn't stop with more energy abounding from there. Bass fans will love the sound later in the album and love the next album: tech mix 2000, my favorite cd in my collection. Old school, nu school, trance and house fans will be united with micro's mix.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tasty rollercoaster ride through the trance experience
This CD doesnt waste any time breaking into what seems an endless stream of smooth, well blended trance tunes. A highly recommended thrillride! Purchase and enjoy........... ... Read more

This compilation, offered by LA's Urb Magazine, is only deceptively straightforward: it explores the current state of electronica, with dance-floor stalwarts DJ Icey, Uberzone, and Rabbit in the Moon butting heads with neo-pop stars like the Crystal Method, Goldie, and Portishead. One might suspect this to be yet another cash-in "electronica" compilation, a mere licensing scheme intended to separate you from the contents of your wallet. But this ain't no scam: not only is the track selection topnotch and accessible, with an equal dose of well-known hits and underappreciated gems, but the compilation also offers an entertaining education. On disc two, New York's Liquid Todd throws down a set of classics, tracks like Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life," Orbital's "Chime," and Dubtribe's "Mother Earth," giving an insight as to what today's electronica stars were hearing whilst in their nappies. As an introduction to the overhyped and confusing world of "electronica," this compilation can't be beat. --Matthew Corwine ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Think 15,000 people raving till dawn in a field
Forget the first disc of Urbal Beats 2. Its got some decent tracks, the Grooverider remix of Temper Temper, the Roni Size track, the DJ Hype remix of the Prodigy, the David Holmes and Portishead tracks are allright as well. But the rest of them are pretty much disapointing...

HOWEVER! Disc 2 not only saves the CD, but puts it to the top of the list! Its brilliant, such a great selection of songs all stuck together, its pure rave! Orbital's Chime - absolutely amazing, 808 State - amazing, A Guy Called Gerald! It carries on, Cybotron, and Dubtribe, class tunes, but Moby's Go is absolutely fantastic, brings tears to the eyes. Then Charly, how classic is that! And the Utah Saints can't help but make you smile, then WHOP! The dark and evil rumblings of Energy Flash, with the Battle Cry of a generation "Ecstasy, ecstasy" to carry it through to Salsa life, a brill track from Derrick May, one of the inventors of Techno!

How could you go wrong?

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a pointless review.. for a pointless album
First thing about this album that i must mention right off is that the track slection is horrid. If it wasn't trying to be a "definitive guide to electronic music" it probably wouldn't have been so annoying. Really this "urbal beats" series works well if view together, but the track selection seems wrong in the individual sets. This time around the balance is thrown off by adding too much big beats, jungle, and trip hop. Three styles that do come from the same influences. Giving the whole album a lack of diversity. Digital empire 2 does diversity so much better. Another issue is the repetition of the same groups and groups that are seen together all the time.. I mean we have an original prodigy song, a remix of a prodigy song and a song prodigy remixed? is this the "definitve guide to prodigy?" We have a fatboy slim song, and a fat boy slim remix. And the whole first disk breaks down to basically 3 different types of related electronica. giving a very bad "definition" of electronica.

The second disk is a half way decent attempt at mixing alot of classic together, but I am getting somewhat sick of hearing old school electronica thats just doesn't hodl up well over time.

I give the album 4 stars since it does have some decent gems on it. But I highy recomend "digital empire 2" over this compilation if your looking to get schooled on the so called "electronica genre"

4-0 out of 5 stars Good "past and present" collection.
No collection will ever be perfect, but this does a decent job. The first disc is what's supposed to be hot (in 98). The second is supposed to be some old school classics. Some well known artists are on here like "Prodigy", "Moby", and "Portishead". My favorite thing by far is some of who's sampled on different tracks. Samples from "Bad Brains", "Kate Bush", "The Verve", and the theme from "Twin Peaks". Overall a good comp. The 1st "Urbal Beats" is good too. Pretty much electronica's greatest hits.

4-0 out of 5 stars People have problems
Trying to compare the two discs is like comparing...well...apples and oranges! The first disc is meant to show what was hot when the album came out. The second disc is a retrospective of the glory days of techno years ago. There are two completely different aesthetics here and I'm amazed how many people don't get that. Consider it a two volume history of electronic music. Either one of the discs is worth your listen, though the first disc has a lot of tracks that I skip over...(Wildchild, Method Man)

3-0 out of 5 stars A letdown
This CD was a big letdown.. it was recommended by the person at the record store, looked good, etc. Basically disc 1 was too jungle for me. There are some tunes that are pretty good, but there are some downright angry-feeling ones as well. Temper-temper gave me a headache and "release YO' Delf"--well, you can figure it.

Disc 2 was much better, but still not enough to compell me to repeat the purchase.

Summary: Disc1 1-2 stars, Disc2 3-4 stars ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bigging up the Birmingham masseeevvee
Now, I'm not normally one to praise my sometime home town too highly, but it has prodUced some excellent music, (think Pram and Broadcast rather than Ocean Colour Scene) and that includes this CD. I first got into Bentley as a result of my brother owning the Bentley's Gonna Sort You Out single, which I listened to over and over and stole and brought to foreign countries with me, and then he stole it back. This basically resulted in me having to go out and buy the album for myself, and I'm very glad I did.
It's getting 4 stars because it's not perfect...it doesn't really fill that niche where you can listen to a CD any time and it's always going to sound great, you have to be kind of in the mood for it.
That said, it is an awesome CD, I still love Bentley's gonna sort you out and Run on the Spot, Flutes and Midlander are also excellent.
Basically buy this CD if you like big beats and silly samples, kind of like Fatboy Slim with a sense of humour. I think the best way to determine whether or not you'll like this CD is to ponder the fact that Bentley's initials spell out the word BRA. If you find that amusing, you'll probably like the CD! (I think that's hilarious.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Stands up to repeated listening
None of the songs on this album have the easy hooks needed for club/radio play, but that doesn't matter. The quality is consistent - it's a rare album where I enjoy every song. It's a bit goofy in places, it's a bit long, but it's managed to stand up to repeated listening, something few albums (especially techno) do. If they had another album, I'd buy it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots or rhythm, little flourishes
One of the many lesser bands to crack the States in the electronica "invasion" of 1997, this duo had the style label execs thought American audiences would eat up. It's easy to see why, as BRA layers on heavy doses of rhythm and groove then toss odd, cheeky samples throughout. Fatboy Slim anyone?

Actually, they could take a lesson from labelmate and fan-fav Slim; the man knows the importance of a hook. His tunes may be simpler, but they're more infectious. BRA are stuck in the middle, developing tracks with twisting, lively basslines, fluctuating beats- and not much else.

They come close a few times, and get it right with "Let There Be Flutes," thanks to, er, flutes, and "On Her Majesty's Secret Whistle," featuring, uh, whistles. Kudos are in order for the madcap, justly named "Return of the Hardcore Jumble Carbootechnodisco Roadshow." But the rest of the tracks make you wish they could have added that "something " to make them rise up. Bentley Rhythm Ace deliver the groove but forget the flourishes. B-

5-0 out of 5 stars Now Is The Time!!
I already owned Vegas but I bought this CD mainly because it had More and the live version of Now Is The Time. I'm really glad I did because I love listening to this CD along with Vegas. However, I could probably live without track 5 because it's basically the same beat over and over without much change but it's still fun to listen to. TCM plays really fast techno/rock kind of music and is great to dance to and just get into the beat. I mainly got interested in TCM after hearing Keep Hope Alive, More, Now Is The Time(olympic mix) and Busy Child from the fifa 98 soundtrack, so I knew that I had to get Vegas. If you love techno than buy this CD and Vegas. TCM ROCKS!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Track 6 is Killer
If you buy this CD for track 6 only ("Dubeliscious Groove"), it is worth the green. But tracks 2, 3, and 4 are also great remixes of previous TCM cuts. There are some fantastic, intelligently done grooves on those tracks. If you call yourself a TCM fan, or any kind of lover of boom 'n doom techno, then you gotta have this CD.

There are some fantastic, intelligently done grooves on those tracks. If you call yourself a TCM fan, or any kind of lover of boom 'n doom techno, then you gotta have this CD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth it to me for track 5
The rest of the disc is lame but ohhh, the dubelicious groove spanish fly mix track FIVE -- a slow, dark and sexy groove caressed with spanish vocals a la femme ... buy it for that!! ((unless of course you ONLY want electronica you can dance to))

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but not ENTIRELY perfect
First of all, this is an awesome CD.I know it's just an EP, but it's a great one.The best thing about the CD (nay, Crystal Method in general) is the sheer amount of layers in their songs, and the complex beats they jamwith.Track 1 is great, but it's kind of mainstream.Track 2 issupposedly a mix of the same thing, but is COMPLETELY different, andtotally chill.Tracks 3,4, and 6 are all completely original, incrediblesounding, and immensely layered.Track 5 I could actually do without, butjust because it's not as good in contrast with the rest. This review alsocomes with an obligatory rave for Vegas.Get it. ... "Extremis," the truly lame single on which X-Filer Gillian Anderson makes the first of what will likely be many bad career moves, sounds and feels like electronica's death knell. The rest of Disc one here redeems the genre with fine body slams by Fluke and Chemical Bros. Disc two delves into the past with ambient trips by David Sylvian, Brian Eno, and William Orbit, among others.--Jeff Bateman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars i loved it !
this was such a great cd! i am so happy for gillian because she is succeding in everything that she does. i thought that the songs here were wonderful and that extremis was one of the best. it is so different from what everyone else is doing and she did a great job on it. the song really fit the series' atmosphere and her voice and the music sounded really sexy. i would definetly recommend this to anyone who hasn't heard it yet, and also try to check out the video. gillian is such a wonderful person and i look up to her so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heaven Sent... I first heard this in 1998
it was out in double cassette then. the only reason I'm writting this review is because of "cdnow's" review. HA HA! nothing but top reviews. Shows how out of touch this guy is!

Anyway... the music.... loved all but two tracks.... the salsa and mesq. was a little monotonous as was??? whatever.

his cd is in my top 10 of the 1500 cd's in my collection. I've been into electronica since 1988 and it really doesn't get much better than this.... the next best thing being a live show... check out Ladytron, they are the next beig thing in electronica... 70's mellow acid beets meets 2003!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good!!!
If you are a techno fan, then this c.d is a must-have!!! I have to admit that I only checked out this c.d because I am a huge Gillian Anderson fan but after listening to it I totally forgot she compiled the songs and even sang one herself.

I really enjoyed listening to it and am now a fan of techno. My reason for this review is that if you are not a Gillian Anderson fan, then you don't have to put down this c.d or ignore it because you see her name on the cover. It has a lot of great material and any techno fan will love it. And if you are a Gillian Anderson fan, then more power to ya because this is one more thing that you can enjoy of hers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth Your Time!
If you like techno/electronica, you are going to love this album. There is a good cross-sampling of songs that give you a flavor of the artists featured. I ended up buying other CDs after hearing some of the selections featured here. I first heard this CD compilation from a friend at work who shares my taste in music and had to buy a copy of my own. I didn't realize that it was compiled by Gillian Anderson until I came to Amazon.com to buy it. Don't base your purchase decision on what some of the "reviewers" have to say about their personal feelings for Ms. Anderson, the artists and selections featured on this compilation are great. If you don't believe me, then sample the selections for yourself on this page.

1-0 out of 5 stars Why?
I think the only possible way to react to this release is: "Who Cares"?

Who cares what Gillian Anderson listens to? Is she famous for her friggin 'taste'? I don't think so.

What's next? Assorted Chocolates compiled by Gillian Anderson? Swimsuit hunks compiled by Gillian Anderson?

Gimme a break. I'm dying to know how much it cost the record company to stick her name on a friggin mix-tape.

Buy this CD if you like the music, but I can't for the life of me figure out why her name's on it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars predicatable, unoriginal, a bit dated but great.
This album is not for those who are looking for anything original or groundbreaking, nor is it the most memorable of records. In spite of this it is a very fine album with some tracks that are so beutiful they really make the hairs on the back of you're neck stand up.
If this LP was a car it would be a Volkwagen Golf. Safe, boring, rather dated, predictable and not much to look at. However, it is still a really fine and solid car.

Having remixed tracks for bands as varied as Korn, the Beastie Boys, and Pitchshifter, Brooklyn's DeeJay Punk-Roc drop-kicks club music into the new millennium on his debut, ChickenEye. Drawing from old-school beats and hip-hop style, ChickenEye ignites an explosion of diverse textures where the big beats come straight from the heart. What stands out here is Punk-Roc's playfully warped sense of humor. The tantrum of a spoiled child looping through "I Hate Everybody" gets layered between James Brown sound bites and dialogue from '60s youth-culture films. The staccato dance groove of "All You Ladies" has the commercial viability of Daft Punk's "Around the World." "No Meaning" mixes scratching with sampled jazz-lounge piano, producing something like Grandmaster Flash meets Combustible Edison, and "Far Out" announces "hardcore beat-box action" over a frenetic urban rap infused with electronic dance beats. DeeJay Punk-Roc clearly had a great time making ChickenEye, and the proof is in the playing. --Gail Worley ... Read more

Straight outta Brooklyn (not Brighton) comes a ball of fire. If you like big beat and want something to chew on try chicken eye. Its fat, meaty and high in protiens and carbohydrates. Extra bonus: grandma's recepies for chicken eye pie and saucy beats.

2-0 out of 5 stars 50,000,000 Headaches Can Be Wrong
The only reason I didn't fall asleep during the highly repetitive and washed out tunes of "50,000,000 DJ's ..." is because I was on the road.
Okay, repetition is a trademark of "techno" cd's, but when the sounds repeated combine ancient squaking horns and leaf raking, I find my patience dwindling rapidly. As I bribed my ears to take in the blandness of the energy-less electro sounds, various singers somehow moved along with the music, adding in a mixture of hip-hop rapping, drolling grunge, and spastic turn-table-lapsing word repeating (such as "body movin" repeated possibly 80 million times on one of the tracks).
I regretted almost every second of this album. There are a few moments when a slick beat gets moving with a few complementary zip/zap fillers in the background, and this pulls my rating up for a total of two stars. Unfortunately, the joyous beats often turned sour when rough transitions with awkward, cracked electric-whistles or the ramblings of an anti-groove vocalist came to play. On top of all this, it seems like the whole recording process was filtered through an oversize sea sponge - not much bass depth or tone richness can be detected.
I recommend this CD pack if you have some strong headache medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Over 2 hours of non-stop joy!
This double cd set is a wonderful collection of some of the finest mixes out there. Some of the biggest names are on here including: Fatboy Slim, Moby, The Beastie Boys, and the Chemical Brothers, just to name a few. Listening to this CD is like having a DJ in your own home, with over 2 hours of some of the finest mixes out there. I love this compilation and can't recommend it enough!

5-0 out of 5 stars Body Movin'
I initially got this CD for the remix of Body Movin' because I'm a big Beastie Boys fan. I'm glad I got this compilation becacause I discovered a lot of good DJs that are on it (DJ Spooky, Leftfield are great!) A friend remommnded it to me and sent me a link to hear some tracks and I was like, OK they sound pretty cool and Body Movin's on - guess I'll give it shot. So I did and it rocks! Been playing it on my car on my way to school everyday and I get lots of good comments on it. Good stuff- I certainly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars And they are right!
As a part-time amateur DJ myself, I must say this cd is amazing. This cd is superb, whether you want to rock 'da house' or to simply liven up your party at home. With great names such as Asian Dub Foundation (which opens the cd), Primal Scream, BT, Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim (need I say more about these two?), Massive Attack and Moby and his "Natural Blues" hit among others, you are in for a real treat. It's a double cd, so it's double fun. I often find these "djs compilations" rather weak, but this one changed my mind 180 degrees. I'm eagerly waiting for the volume 2.
50,000,000 DJ's surely got it right and now they're 50,000,001!

5-0 out of 5 stars Phat Fatboy Remixes of "Body Movin" and other cuts
Overall, this CD is fantastic. It's one of the best DJ compilation out there and it has some good and hard-to-find remixes by Fat Boy Slim. The remix of the Beasties' "Body Movin" is kikin'! Way to go Slim! Moby has a good remix as well. There are some other tracks from DJs I didn't know before which are very cool....especially that Kid Koala track. I'd recommend this to anyone who is seriously into the DJ culture or who wants a good intro to it. Great for parties. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars If you are just looking for the video...
Buy the IMPORTED single (ASIN:B00005BIWG) with Enhanced video instead. This version contains the video (I bought both), but the import contains an enhanced version that's full-screen. I sure would like to see it compatible with a DVD player though, monitors are only so large.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's the deal
Oh, my relationship with Fatboy and his music goes back a few years. Let's just say we've come a long way, baby.

When Mr. Cook (better known as Fatboy to his U.S. contemporaries) released "Better Living Through Chemistry," I received an advanced copy from Astralwerks as I was the primary RPM directory at my college station. I enjoyed his formulaic yet insightful method of building-it-up, tearing-it-down (which his since become Fatboy Slim's signature style) on great tracks like "Michael Jackson" and "Song For Lindy."

With his next release, "You've Come A Long Way, Baby" I was similarly interested in the gems among the radio singles, favorites including "You're Not From Brighton" and "Love Island" (which began to grow on me dispite tearing its melody straight from "Lindy").

After "On The Floor At The Boutique," which was possibly one of my truly favorite efforts, my attention began to grow weary. Norman Cook was quickly becoming an MTV icon, a SPIN cover model, more or less an advertisement for The Next Big Thing. Along came his third album, and I had long since forgotten Fatboy, moving on to less commercial DJs and ensconcing myself in the rave scene (vs. the club scene).

Then I picked up a club mix by Johnny Vicious which featured "Star 69." Without looking at the case, I knew I had found a new winner. Let me just say I was shocked to find out that it was Fatboy. Once again, he was creating innovative music.
Once I saw the "Weapon Of Choice" video one night heavily under the influence, I was corralled back into Cook's world of predictable club beats. I bought this single primarily for the video featuring the wondrous Walken doing what he does best. I stayed on for the remaining audio tracks which are incidentally just plain great. "Star 69 (What the F**k)" is a terrific track, Fatboy Slim fan or not. Shell out 7 bucks. That's a dollar a track, and with a deal like that, trust me, you'll be building it up before you'll be tearing it down.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent .. if you like the fat man!
i only know a few fatboy slim songs, like Gangsta Trippin, Rockefeller Skank, Weapon of Choice.. but if you love the catchy but repetitive voice samples he uses into infinity, you'll probably love this song. i fell in love with it (even though i can't play it around parental units) the VERY first time i heard the MP3 i grabbed off the "Napster of the internet circa mid-90s" and HAD to buy the single... (see? that's how it's supposed to work!!)

4-0 out of 5 stars good stuff
the album version of star 69 is decent, and the more i listen to it, the more it grows on me. these remixes are much the same way.

xpress 2's mix, dj godfather's first mix, and tino maas's mix are really superb. godfather's second mix isn't all that great though, and the 6th track is just a vocal isolation of roland clarke repeating the song's lines over and over (for dj use i'd presume). but 4 out of the 6 songs on here are very nice. add to that the weapon of choice video, and this is well worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars For the video alone
I bought this CD for the video of Weapon of Choice alone. Its a great video and Christopher Walken shows off his great talent as a dancer. Well worth it just for the video. I wish they would sell it on DVD as well. ... Read more

great vocals, hard beats, what more could u ask for? i first heard the song 'attitude' in the movie my first mister and fell in love with it immediately, other fav songs are cozican and come in hardhighely recomended

2-0 out of 5 stars uhh no
i really can't see why people like this stuff. i've heard "coz i can" off mp3.com and saw a bit of some rather awkward live show, and both were perfect examples of why, despite what some people would like to say, there are good techno producers and bad techno producers. these beats are weak, uninteresting and unoriginal, and for gods sake its so obvious "steve p" used loops instead of programming his own beats a lot of the time, because he can't even be bothered to sync them with the rest of the track. listen to that skip on "coz i can", thats the sort of mistake you make when you're a 13 year old making mod's with Fasttracker that sample the chemical brothers for all your beats. these tracks never take off, they're pretty much like video game music. not horrible, just detrimentally uninspired and boring. i definitely would not reccommend this to anyone, i don't think, unless you really crave that "in your face" attitude. i'll admit, they are hardcore, but there's a lot more to good music than that. once again, nice solid proof that, indeed, anyone can write techno music, but it doesn't take any less skill to make it good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slammin!!
An outstanding album... Steve P. throws some positively bone-crunching tracks in, showing the darker side of breakbeat. Attitude, Come In Hard, Psychopath... some wicked tracks showing how far the duo have progressed since leaving Skint records a couple of years back. My favourite is Coming Back With A Sword, an epic, brooding number with some nice vocal samples. Unmissable if you're a breakbeat fan who likes rock as well. Strongly recommended for any bigbeat fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hardknox is a must-have!
I heard the song "Psychopath" on a compilation CD and knew immediately that I had to have this band's album. This is the most unique electronic sound I have ever heard. Their combination of techno and some hardcore hip-hop is incredible. Tracks like "Coz I Can", "Fire Like This", and "Attitude" are guaranteed to make your heart race and your head bob. Plus, anyone who takes AMG's most famous line and uses it in a track is allright with me.(listen to "Who's Money") Hardknox is a must-have for anyone who is tired of the candy-store techno that seems to be dominating the radio lately.

One of industrial music's founders, Jack Dangers has morphed from rock's resident futurist to become headmaster of the old school. In 1999 he cofounded Tino, a record label focused primarily on breakbeat: vinyl sets of protean drum loops coated in spaced-out samples. Hello Friends! collects over a dozen Tino tracks into an hour of continuous party music. Listen to how he leaps from the surreal conclusion of "Mambothon" (perfect for hipster wedding receptions) into the hard-driving "Kick It Dub," or how four minutes later he uses a distorted voice to duct tape that track to the one that follows it. Dangers enjoys stressing the seams between component parts, winding up one song's rhythmic motor just in time to jump headlong into the next. If you miss the days before you'd heard one too many samples of James Brown's whip-crack rhythm sections, Dangers is here to make things right. --Marc Weidenbaum ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jack Dangers extends 'Meat Beat' brilliance to side project
A side Project from "Meat Beat Manifesto" frontman 'Jack Dangers'....differs slightly from his Meat Beat Manifesto work, as it has a more Trip-Hop / Dub feel to it....the usual trademarks of Complex Breaks & Beats, with snippets of Dialogue still remain, but here it's direction takes a slightly less hurried approach here, with a more hypnotic sound. Case in point track 8 ("D.U.B. Dub") weaves wonderful Dub instrumentation with arranged breakbeats to joyous effect...and the move into track 9 "Elegant Dub", is virtually seamless...the mixing also deserves a mention, with its rough & ready approach, contrasting wonderfully with each track, and thus creating something that feels like a superior mix tape mish-mash, and although this is a solo album, it compares extremely favourably with the best of his 'Meat Beat Manifesto' work. But be warned....this is not 'Meat Beat Manifesto' insofar as this is ideally suited to home consumption, and if the idea of a Predominately dub influenced album with the usual smatter of vocal dialogue appeals, then this will ultimately appeal that those looking for a smoke-fuelled variation on the IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars Would have been a great stocking stuffer!
Must have been living under a rock. Never heard of "Tino Corp." until recently (the Tino Dub series dates back to '98.) Regardless, this is excellent (albeit different) stuff, and I can't recommend it enough for anyone who enjoys MBM. As someone noted in the reviews below, this is a mix CD picking up bits n' pieces from the other Tino Corp releases (Tino Dub series, Bo Square & DHS.)

5-0 out of 5 stars This is pretty cool stuff
Once you see that Jack Dangers was in control of this, you knew you were in for a sonic ride. And what a ride it is. Jack started a record label named Tino Corp. and this CD is basically him doing a continuous mix of the label's offerings. If you're familiar with MBM's latest offerings you know that this is not your run of the mill techno music. Instead you definately hear a Latin and Carribean influence in the beats. It makes for a somewhat mellow sound without becoming ambient. If you liked MBM's last two CD's, you'll probably like this as well. If you've never heard anything by Jack Dangers or MBM, I would recommend you start with _99%_, probably MBM's most accessible music. Either way you won't go wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars Forget the naysayers; you can dance to this
Jack Dangers, aka Meat Beat Manifesto, serves up 15 mixed tracks on this release. In a way, one could argue that MBM, more than just about anyone, paved the way for a generation of electro-breakbeat with the single song "Helter Skelter." That said, this disc lacks much of the trademark noisy bluster of some MBM releases - not entirely a bad thing - but still leaves the foot tapping. Parts of the non-stop mix tend to drag a bit, but on the whole I found the combination of crisp breakbeats, bongos and weird vocal samples to be quite engaging. More importantly, one can hear Dangers' signature on the work. In a genre of music that is often cookie-cutter and/or anonymous in its presentation, 'Hello Friends' reminds you that, at its best, electronic music has a detectable heartbeat underneath the cold machinery, particularly in the hands of a mixmaster like Jack Dangers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Whatever happened to Jack Dangers?
A few years ago the man could do no wrong. Everything he touched was great. MBM material and his remixes were so inventive and engaging. But this stuff is boring and pointless. It meanders without a direction. Some of the really dubby stuff has that old spark (and some of these aren't even done by Dangers) but nothing leaves an impression. I know this is a mix CD but nothing on this would get me dancing-maybe head nodding. Maybe if I was in a club and this was on I'd be really happy but at home it's kinda annoying. Maybe Jack should have a steak. ... Read more
