2-0 out of 5 stars Good Cover Art, Bad Album
The music on this album is boring, repetitive, and stale. Repetition wouldn't be so bad if these looped beats were better -- more danceable perhaps. A solid groove to move to is a good justification for repetition in electronic music, but this isn't really a dancefloor album. Some reviewers suggest listeners approach it as a soundtrack. Well, unfortunately, there is no movie, and there are no visual images to prop this music up. As such, the album falls flat. To be fair, there is one standout track on here, entitled "Gone." Holmes apparently knows its all he's got going for him, because over 1/4 of the album is "Gone" remixes. "No Man's Land" is also good, however, these two tracks can't justify the purchase in my opinion. My advice is to download mp3's of "Slash It," "Got F**ked Up Along the Way," or "Minus 61 in Detroit." If you like these tracks, you may like the album, so go for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This art is great.
I like the cover art. Overall you see his cinematic fondness showing on this very well. The b-side disc is great. I never thought I'd say this but the remixes are a great addition. The main cd has both "No Man's Land" and "Gone" which are spectacular. I read somewhere that he sold all of these songs to films, commercials, and tv shows. I could see how. I just wish he would dispose the the mandatory digital dance stuff sometimes (although the one he has on here has a bumpin' hip hop groove to it). Great find it you can get it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Slick soundtrack for a private mind
My first foray into D. Holmes' particular brand of music has been well-rewarded. I give it 3 stars cuz it seems to only be breaking the surface of something that could be much much more--but the second CD (included in all US releases, from what I can tell) offers nice variations that more than satisfy. Music that simultaneously puts you in a trance and allows you to think should always be applauded for expressing such a wonderful paradox

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Debut
Not as polished as Let's get Killed (my possible #1 fav) but it shows what a genius the man is using alot less sophisticated gear then the latter album. The entire album is brilliant.

4-0 out of 5 stars dum di dum
Despise the horrible cover the music is surprisingly good. Not directly uplifting but not as dark and gloomy as the cover suggests. I'm surprised Holmes has only one review (now two) because this is quality music alongside darker songs of Massive Attack and Underworld. Almost everybody is gonna recognize the first song from somewhere and there is another track on the album that got slightly remixed by Kruder and Dorfmeister (sessions). I wish it would be a double album but unfortunately I have no idea what reviewer no 1 is referring to. My copy of this album came as a single cd?! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Stale
Well, ever since their first album The Crystal Method has sold records on pure hype.

I saw them twice on tour, and both shows were almost the same performance with MINOR tweaks...

It goes to show every album has a niche or one cool sound that is promenant throughout the album... It's too little too late. The album reminds me of the old booty bass discs that people used to blast to show off the stereo's bass in their cars.

The cd is a bore after one listen through....notice the low price you can buy it for and where you can find it in bargain bins.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent variety of remixes for new Crystal Method track.
This is the latest remixes for the legendary dance act The Crystal Method. This single features a different type of remixes for the more adventureous dance fan. The mixes range from really aggressive house to a a mixture of electro/freestyle. The vocals are by John Garcia and he sounds like AC/DC or some heavy metal vocalist doing dance music-weird but really interesting. These are the mixes:
1- Erick Morillo Main Mix (7:03)
2- Erick Morillo Dub Mix (7:03)--both mixes very aggressive house.

3- Deepsky's Green Absinthe Dub Mix(8:12)
4- Nu Breed Remix(6:58)-full vocals
5- EK's Spider In The Corner Alt. Dub Mix(6:11)
This hit number 3 on the Billboard Club Play Chart and Dance Sales Chart. The Erick Morillo mixes are the best here. Excellent.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK
To be honest I must say i was a bit disappointed - the morillo remix is in my opinion not quite up to the standards that he has set in the past. None of the remixes sound too close to the original - each sounds very different, so for those who are used to borland's guitar riff will find that the central sound no longer revolves around that. I would say that my favorite one would be the EK spider or NuBreed mix. It's only a few bucks, so i think it's worth it for the fans. Those who aren't should stick to the legion of boom album itself - born too slow, wide open, and the highlight, weapons of mass destruction, are definitely more satisfying.

5-0 out of 5 stars January 13, 2004 is coming "Too Slow"!
In 1997, The Crystal Method become the new leaders of the electronic music with their debut album: Vegas. Since then, nothing has changed. No reason to hurry, came back for more in 2001 with "Tweekend". Their music couldn't missed from the clubs and from many-many motion picture soundtracks (and from my home).
And after more than one year work, the new album will explode on January 13, 2004, called: "Legion of boom". Till then, they released a CD-Single, which proves the quality of the whole new album for me. The "Born too slow" tune can be found on the legendary game series latest part: Need for speed - Underground. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Dated Big beat
This is not Hardcore Techno. This is dated big beat in the vein of the Chemical Brothers. 1or 2 decent tracks but mostly unoriginal, erratic and badly presented fluff.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hard Beats for the Long-Term
Eboman, Keoki, the Crystal Method and more contibute to this great hardcore techno compilation. The beats are solid and fast, the bass is juicy, the beeps and samples trypnotic. This'll trance you out faster than a bucket of pills. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Psilocybin needs to be beaten!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clearing something up --- Breakbeat music originated in the United States and was later revolutionized by artists like DJ Icey. The difference between Icey's version of breaks and Adam Freeland's breaks is like the difference between, for example, Massive Attack and Dieselboy.Music that comes from the southern U.S. (Atlanta, Orlando, Miami, & St. Louis) incorporates a good amount of bass if you didn't already know.More than half of Adam Freelands bass rythms on the ON TOUR CD for example only hit on the 1st and 3rd beat.Freeland is a great DJ and does produce good sounds, but if you were to play one of his mixes versus one of Icey's mixes to a random crowd of electro\breakbeat\techno-music-in-general fans, I would bet more than 9 out of 10 times Icey would get the most favor.I listen to my Icey, Huda Hudia, and Friction&Spice CD's much more than I do my A. Freeland, Rennie Pilgrem, or Uberzone CD's - and I like both genres. My point is, and I know I'm taking a while to get to it, is that you shouldn't write reviews on 2 different Icey CDs just to dis his music and glorify Adam Freeland's because thats clearly all your trying to do.The only electronic CDs that I think I've ever listened to and not picked up some cheesyness are those produced by The Crystal Method, but thats beyond the point. The point is, Psilocybin, that you should do everyone a favor and throw away your keyboard and just use the mouse from now on.This CD, released about the same time as Essential Elements, is a great display of Icey's uncanny ability to rock a set.I can't say that I've seen a wide variety of wellknown DJ's live but then again we are talking about a CD and not a live set.I have been to a few Icey shows that were completely awesome and I've never talked to anyone else that didn't enjoy the same experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars CAN YOU SAY FUNKY???
Well, I have read all the other reviews and am a little dissapointed with the way psilosibin tried to make a case. Icey broke the mold. I have heard all of the Dj's he put in his review live in London. And they pale in comparison live, yes they do have some good cd's and maybe a couple of records but in the long run go with Icey!!! I live in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and have been to London, Maidstone, Paris, Ibiza, Boston, LA, N.O., Brussles, Amsterdam and several other places. You get the idea?I spin mostly D&B and a little breaks. Icey is one of the phattest dj's I have ever seen live period I put him in the top 5. If you like D&B you should check out a few London Dj's. That is where it all started!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Florida Breaks cheesy????? Are U out of your mind?????
I have been living in Florida all my life, but have traveled to Houston, Dallas, Charleston, Omaha, and a slew of other cities in my time.I am a Florida Breaks DJ, so maybe I'm a bit biased. But I still fail to understand how people can listen to the same BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM for 6 hours on end at some of these night establishments.THAT'S CHEESY.Being in the Air Force, I have met many people and transformed them into Florida Breaks fans with the spinning of one set.

Florida Breaks, as a genre, is the most refreshing, energizing, revolutionary movement in the ENTIRE dance music scene.Period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diverse Breaks!
Icey has delivered quite a different sound with this Mix cd consisting of newer works, the tunes span the range of breaks starting off with some nu-skool flavored tracks that merge into Electro territiory as well as the techy break sound of "Alright" and the housey head nodding groove of "Drive", The mix glides seemless and grows on you with repeated listens. Definetly one to add to the collection.

3-0 out of 5 stars if you like icey's style, buy it
i managed to get my hands on this mix recently because i wanted to hear icey's style.my first icey album was his "essential mix," which i liked at first.in my early days as a breaks fan, i liked icey and his style, but i've had a change of heart.as adam freeland said, florida breaks are just cheesy.the tracks on this album, a lot of them produced by icey himself, will get very tiresome very fast (much like his albums "essential mix" and "generate").if you like breakbeat, i would check out the UK scene.artists and djs such as adam freeland, kevin beber, tayo, rennie pilgrem, the plump djs, apex, blim, ils, and the likes are revolutionizing the genre.the beats, the breaks, and the bass are all certainly present in this album, and the tracks are mixed well, but after listening to this cd you'll be left wanting something more.and you just won't get it by listening again.give it a shot if you're real brave and patient. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars breahtaking
uberzone has a very unique style because instead of taking electronic equipment and trying to make it NOT sound electronic...he pushes more and more toward a "robotic" sound. hopefully his first full-length will be out soon (he signed to astralwerks)

5-0 out of 5 stars Please get this track. It speaks for itsself.....
Uberzone is amazing. Few titles on the market but the track...this track "The Freaks"....This is the best percussion lick I have come across of this genre hands down. (if you like this check out the track "Pearl's Girl" by Underworld (no kidding).

5-0 out of 5 stars Hypnotic beats, Surreal synthesis
I first heard Uberzone's "The Freaks" and knew I would buy their CD from that one song. You can tell immediately when a group has got it or not. Uberzone has definitely got something. I love African rythms and good synthesis and you can hear these guys are masters in Tribal, Acid and Tryp. Definitely an investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars groovin beats, amazin scratches
These guys are the best in electronica. The album does justice to their amazing live shows. Listen to this EP and you'll go anywhere to see them perform.

5-0 out of 5 stars It has never been topped.
I remember when this first came out and it was just a few of us going nuts over this stuff. Three years later I had people telling me, "You've got to hear this new group from L.A., they're the hottest thing going!" If you like techno/break-beat/house/drum&bass////whatever genre you listen to of electronic music this has to be in your collection. If you thought Crystal Method, DJ Icey, Baby Ann, Rabbit in the Moon, Chemical Brothers were something, you haven't heard anything yet!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simplicity at its Best
Q (of Uberzone) has a great EP here - the robotic, flowy feel to nearly every song on the disc is a welcomed break from the big beats, a la Crystal Method and Chemical Bros. Buy this if you want a break from the mainstream.

5-0 out of 5 stars Space Kadet EP
this is quite possibly the best techno cd i have heard since the chemical brothers "exit planet dust". from start to finish this cd is great. a must have for all techno fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars True perfection
Well, I'd have to say that uberzone is the best techno I've ever heard without a doubt. I struggle to find something better and I've been into them all. I've enjoyed crystal method, prodigy, orb, orbital, fsol but uberzone is just awesome..very trippy, very brain expanding...very skilled

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome

Reviews (1)

5-0 out of 5 stars A much more balanced offering
"Pressure Point", the second proper album from UK electro/big beat/ragga collective Freestylers, is significantly more balanced than "We Rock Hard", their debut offering, and benefits greatly from this fact.

Where "We Rock Hard" had a few anthems - featuring appearances from Tenor Fly, MC Navigator and Definition of Sound - and the rest of the album essentially as instrumental workouts which, although they worked well as club tracks, fell down as listening, "Pressure Point" has learned from this mistake. Here, Tenor Fly has four appearances ("Weekend Song", "London Sound", "Phenomenon One" and "Signs" with Spanner Banner"), and Navigator clocks in with three ("Bad Boy Love", "Get Down Massive" and "Rumours of War"). As well as this, female vocals are provided by Petra and Valerie M - both of whom hold up their end of the bargain very well - and a surprising freestyle from Justin Warfield sets off "Broadcast Channels".

Thus, "Pressure Point" has many more vocal offerings than its predecessor. This is a considerable advantage as many of "We Rock Hard"'s instrumentals seemed tailor-made for a vocalist, and yet none were forthcoming. On "Pressure Point", the instrumentals are as high quality as they ever have been, they just happen to have vocals over them as well.

And what vocals! Navigator's tongue seemed elastic enough on his "We Rock Hard" tracks, but the interval between Freestylers albums has seen him grow considerably as an artist. His razor-sharp narrative skills are demonstrated on "Bad Boy Love" and then come "Get Down Massive" and "Rumours of War". "Get Down Massive" is clearly one of the prospective anthems from the disc - Navigator flows like an old hand over this party-oriented track, blending just enough hip-hop into his ragga style. He then follows up with a spell-binding performance on the reflective "Rumours of War", he is almost two different performers during the track - the singer of smooth contemporary reggae and the acid-tongued DJ. Somehow he is capable of bringing the trick off, and the album is much the stronger for it.

Tenor Fly is also back with a vengeance. My one criticism of his role on "We Rock Hard" was that he might have been slightly under-utilised. Certainly there is no chance of that being true here. "London Sound" and "Phenomenon One" are incredible performances of what we've all known he's capable of producing, while "Weekend Song" sees him much looser than normal, a great benefit to the track. His performance on "Signs" is worthy of considerable plaudits as well. Performing the "ruff" role to Spanner Banner (Pliers' brother, for those for whom that means anything)'s smooth, Tenor delivers a highly conscious performance and one with distinguishable lyrics - a rarity in contemporary reggae.

The backing tracks and instrumentals, as previously mentioned, are top notch as we have come to expect from the Freestylers. Of particular note are the appearances of "This or That" (the Black Sheep classic) in "Phenomenon One" and "Armagideon Time" as the riddim for "Signs". These samplings demonstrate that not only are the Freestylers conscious of their roots in the electro scene - roots often given nods to with vocoder vocals at the most unexpected times - but also those in the broader spectrum of hip-hop or reggae.

Overall, a very strong outing indeed by a group to watch in the future. This album may turn out, over time, to be a "poppier" version of the Freestylers sound - containing as it does so many vocalists - as opposed to the more break-heavy "We Rock Hard". Regardless, both albums are worthy inclusions in anyone's collection - this one in particular. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably one of the best mixed tapes of all time
If you like a tastefully done mix that just isn't hip-hop, techno, house etc. This is for you. A Sure party banger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Breakbeat mix ever
If you like bigbeat - breakbeat You will love this mix. I have yet to find a mix that compares with this mix. The chemical brothers do an insane job putting this mix together with everything from meat beat manifesto samples to public enemy. The other two LIVE AT THE SOCIAL mixes dont compare to this mix.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely ... AWESOME!
There's not much to say except this disk just kicks arse like no other DJ mix album I've ever heard. So many different styles - Hip Hop, Techno, Trance, House - and anything else you can think of. It just goes OFF. The first half is very big beat with a heap of old school Hip Hop tracks but it evolves through many different realms as the disk goes on. Puts you on a new level. If you like techno/trance/hiphop dj mix kinds of things, I challenge you to not LOVE this album. Simply the best I've ever heard.

3-0 out of 5 stars a funkier cd is what i'm waiting for
with all the decent names on this cd i thought for sure it'd be a winner. unfortunately, i was wrong. those looking for true electro-funk grooves should look somewhere else. if you want standard house beats then this would satisfy as filler at your next party. nothing outstanding on this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dance Music at it's Best.
This is an excellent compilation of dance hits. The first three tracks are excellent

1. Bodyrock - Moby (Olav Basoski's Da Hot Funk Da Freak Funk remix) 2. Jumbo - Underworld (Future Shock Worlds Apart mix) 3. This Life - Mandalay (Cevin's Main Frame dub)

The other tracks didn't catch my attention but are just as good. This cd is House, dance music that will keep your ears and feet interested throughout the CD. I do highly reccommend this CD. All these tracks at a very good price too. Believe me you wont be dissapointed. Take a chance. Thank you for your time on reading my review. I hope it helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME
when i first heard this cd, i didn't know what it was... it was unmarked. by the time i got to tracks 8 and 9 i was goin' nuts. it took me back to the breakdance era, when i was in second grade, which is the last time i heard those particular tracks. if you're into breaks, hip hop, electro -- GET THIS. i'm trying to find it on LP right now -- as well as listening to it at the moment.

4-0 out of 5 stars the epitome of "back in the day" hiphop
Artists have always tried to capitalize on the popularity of "retro" or "throwback" melodies in modern works, hoping to cash in on the nostalgia, campiness, or similar incentives. What they often lack is an actual appreciation and command of the musical style, and end up sounding like remixing hacks.

The Freestylers (or if you prefer, Cut & Paste) are not such hacks. Climb in the the "way way back machine", kid, this is a trip to the past with the edge of today's DJ skills.

The blend of beats and melodies on this particular "old school" compilation is similar to that Norman Cook (Fatboy Slim) and the like coming out of the UK en force, but the Freestylers seem to wrap it all in a tone of pure enjoyment and good spirits, never trying to prove they have the most eccelctic tastes, but rather trying to put together a series of memorable (and sometimes overlooked) classic breakbeat, hiphop, funk and urban beats of the past, as well as a few contemporary pieces that carry on the traditions laid down in the era of "Beat Street" and "Breakin'".

So strap on the fat laces and work on your windmill technique - it's deja vu all over again. ... Read more

This is packed with all the hits! The only beef I have with release is that they are all short radio versions...apart from a couple of remixes on cd2. Apart from that, it's a great compilation!Well worth it! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lesson Learned!
As I write I still haven't finished listening to this for the first time, but initial impressions are really good: the segue into "The Message" alone will bring a smile to your face, and the sequencing of Ike & Tina Turner, David Holmes and Toots and the Maytals is unbelievably funky. The Hexstatic mix is groovier and less frantic than DJ Food's first mix in the Solid Steel series, and to my mind it's much more listenable. Excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't strike the sore with your tongue, tuff it out!!!!!!!
I heard this cd playing at my local get fresh record store, while my ears were being filled with gasm juice I was wondering "What is this gasm juice inducer" the fine worksmith exclaimed "this is the new ninjatune release" I bought it. It was good.

More In Depth:
The mixing is superb, its not your typical hey look i'm beat mixing... its smooth, its suave, its ready to ROCK YOUR ABS. the track selection is phenom as well. Groove to this album front to back, you'll enjoy it very much. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Some of Trip Hop's best
I've had this CD for a few years now and I consider it an essential part of my binder. My favorite songs on the album are "The Beat Goes On" by Basco, "Terminal Intensity" by Wizard of Oh and "Weekend Starts Here" by Fatboy Slim. I used to hear the Basco track at raves back in the day and it sounded a lot better at a faster tempo, but its still a good track. The Wizard of Oh track sounds in some ways similar to my all time favorite Prodigy song, Poison, and the Fatboy Slim track sounds similar to a once popular Snoop Doggy Dogg song. This album was made around the same time so the DJ's and producers were using the same machines. Its interesting to hear how different ideas materialized using the same medium. This is definitely not to say that these songs are a rip off of other commercial hits. As for "Nothing Like Tomorrow" thats my least favorite song on this album and I don't feel it even belongs on here. I skip this track every time I get to it. I just cant stand the bassline. I'm not an authority on the matter, but I don't think that track even qualifies as Trip Hop.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Oversoul Song
Please ignore the rating, but if you listen to the sample the song "Nothing Like Tomorrow" and really like it, or if you have the CD and really like that song check out the band "Supreme Beings of Leisure" because it sounds like it is them under a different name. Their debut is self-titled and pretty good. In fact a different version of "Nothin' like Tomorrow" appears on it. I don't think they sound at all like Portishead-- Much more upbeat.

2-0 out of 5 stars Is missing something
In my opinion, this CD is a all right but needs to be listened to couple of times before you can really start to appreciate it. It doesn't have anything that really grabs your attention at the first time so it is a potential for one of those CD's that is forgotten after a while. It is also missing the depth to it and is all to alike. I liked Nothing Like Tomorrow - Oversoul 7 the most. It reminded me of Portishead and was the only song that really got to me. It had a mysterious sound to it and by listening to it you feel like you are drifting away. I am an avid fan of music that gets deep into the soul and has a beautiful sound. Most of the other songs on the CD were too alike to each other. I personally prefer more variety I would recommend this CD if you have patience and are ready to listen to it couple of times before you start liking it. I have to admit that I do not know much about the other music they have made so I wouldn't be able to compare it to that so I will leave it to say that I am willing to keep this CD but I would not invest in any others without prior listening. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars This 303's Pretty Good!
I am a huge fan of Fatboy Slim, and the song "Everybody Needs a303", in particular.

Although this CD's got a coupla good mixes, ifyou really want to get the full 303 experience, get Part One. This disc hasa good techo mix of 303, called "Everybody Loves a Filter", whichis reason enough for the disc alone. There's also a nice jam called"Es Paradis", and a Radio Edit of "Everybody Loves aCarnival", as well as another nice tune called "Where You'reAt".

The main reasons to get this CD are 1) Everybody Loves aFilter, and 2)Es Paradis.

If you love "Everybody Loves aCarnival" and/or the original 303 mix, then get Part One. It hasfull-length mixes of both, and truly captures the essence of 303.

Inshort, this 303's good for the fairly rare songs, but Part One's better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Norman is brilliant.
Fatboy Slim, aka Norman Cook, has done it again. His finest work ever, in my opinion. At once carefree and thoughtful, this maxi-single, however short it may be, will have you dancing wherever and whenever you hearit.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brothers Rock !
I did not realise that so many other people liked the Chemical Brothers, i agree with everything that haas been written before me and i am glad that the Brothers have got a following over in the USA. The single totally kicks arse, the album is going to be simply awesome. These guys really put all other dance acts to shame, i have bought everything they have released so far, so i must have almost 15 CD's of theirs, and to know that they are still grinding out the best dance tracks 7 years after they started up. Well done you guys.

5-0 out of 5 stars HERE WE GO!!!
"Hey girls, hey boys, superstar DJs, here we go!"

They've done it again! The new Chemical Brothers single is simply AMAZING. There is a drastic stylistic progession between this and Tom & Ed's previous works. Here, the "big beat" motif is abandoned for a more acid/trance sound. But fear not, the music is no less complex than it was before- quite the contrary, actually. Keyboard noodleing, conga beats, drum breaks, anthemic guitar riffs and a subtle kraftwerk sample are laid over a delicious 4/4 beat- THIS IS NOT JUST A BOOTY-SHAKER, IT IS A SOUL-SHAKER! Nothing short of sublime.

The single is already receiving air-play on BBC Radio One, so a few of you may have been so fortunate as to have heard it already. You can also hear it at the astralwerks web-page.

You all are in for a big treat...

4-0 out of 5 stars Ahh, the summer of '99
This song reminds me of watching Rage in the late-summer of '99 with my brother, this was the first Chemical Brothers song I ever heard, and I only liked it because of the great movie clip. After hearing Surrender, which held other great tracks like 'Let Forever Be' and 'The Sunshines Underground' this is what made me come to love the work of the D.Jing duo, the Chemical Brothers. This single is great and I recommend this single way more than the album, because the album only has a few good tracks and it's not worth forking out money for an album when you can buy the best track for 1/3 of the price

4-0 out of 5 stars A "flashback" to big beats and blasting bass
Already owning "Surrender," I bought this CD for the B-sides and was pleasantly surprised. "Flashback" is a super tour-de-force a la "Loops of Fury," and it alone made the disc worth every penny. "Scale" was a little dissappointing, based around cheap-sounding, gimmicky synth scales, but it holds up well enough. A good buy for any Chem Bros fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too cool for words (But I will try)
I defy anyone to come up with a cooler song than "Flashback" It is quite possibly the best b-side ever recorded. ... Read more
