3-0 out of 5 stars Get "Live From Amsterdam 1985"
This is the original Relix release from 1986 of portions of The Flying Burrito Bros. '85 Amsterdam show. It's got it's moments but in 1997 Relix took the ten tracks found on this cd, added the remaining five tracks from the show and released the entire concert as "Live From Amsterdam 1985". It is still a single cd and if it costs any more it's not much. So it would be a good idea to pick that one up rather than this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why it's not in stock.
This album is hard to find b/c it's good, and b/c the record company, Watermelon records I think, went bust, I think. The Gourds new record company is Sugar Hill Records. Also signed Sam Bush and other bluegrass favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gin and Juice, bluegrass style
If you can get your hands on it, it is worth every penny if only to hear their version of Gin and Juice (originally Snoop Doggy Dog). Around the net, popular wisdom is that the cover is by Phish or Ween, but THIS is it so find this album and buy it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Gin and Juice
I love Gin and Juice, some friends from Fayetteville introduced it to me over the Fourth of July weekend and I had to get the CD the only way to get it was over the computer. I wish it was more popular so maybe we could hear it on the radio sometime.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music Fan from the South Side of Tarry Bank
The Gourds flat out rock and this album is outstanding. There's nothing better than rolling the bones, tossing back cold skeet, and jamming to Gin & Juice.

Singing morbid mini-operas over simple country chord progressions and ungainly programmed rhythms, the Handsome Family were once a better concept than a live band. Their early shows, Rennie Sparks writes in this disc's notes, "elicited chair-throwing and death threats." Live at Schuba's Tavern is more than proof of Rennie and husband Brett's maturation as performers; recorded in December 2000, the set--drawn mainly from In the Air, Through the Trees, and Milk and Scissors--stands as a greatest-hits collection for a band that's as likely to hit the big time as an experimental bagpipe troupe. It's also a fine comedy album, rife with bickering shtick and oddball anecdotes. And not least, this document of one of the duo's last Chicago gigs (they moved to Albuquerque in 2001) is a typically macabre mash note to the city that served as both the Handsome Family's home and muse. Fittingly, it closes with "The Woman Downstairs": "I dreamed of lying down on the el tracks," Brett rumbles over Rennie's wheezing melodica. "The trains roared by under smoke-gray skies/Lake Michigan rose and fell like a bird." --Anders Smith Lindall ... Read more

great album by my favorite band...the banter in between the songs is half their sweet charm. You won't be sorry with this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing disc for fans and newcomers alike.
If youre a Handsome Family fan, you'll love this disc. The live arrangements sound great (although there's a bit too much reverb on Brett's voice), and the track selection is wide and varied, doing a good job of covering the first 3 discs. If anything, the live versions of the songs sound a bit *too* much like the studio versions which is a good and bad thing, really. But the real kicker here are the tracks of banter and anecdotes between Brett and Ronnie. They run the gamut from poignant to the downright hilarious, and are almost worth the price of the disc alone.

If you're new to the Handsome Family, this disc is a great introduction if you don't want to pick one particular studio album beforehand. While there's not much from their most recent album "Twilight", this live disc does a great job of cherrypicking some choice tracks from their first 3 discs that really give you a great feel for the Handsome Family sound. Lots of reverb, cheap keyboard drumlines, soft floaty organs, and deep accoustic guitar flutter along beneath Brett's sonorous voice singing backwoods death poems. There's really not much else like it today, and it only tenuously fits in the "insurgent country" movement it gets lumped into. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

4-0 out of 5 stars gotta have their live show
helluva an album. we've always known the sparks were great live and it's so nice to have a clean, mastered album that captures a sort of greatest hits effort of songs as well as hilarious rennie on stage. and brett's voice is so powerful. great record, love it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Document of the 1985 band
This 1985 line-up was not among the best. John Beland and Gib Guilbeau had called it quits (temporarily) so Greg Harris, Sneaky Pete, and Skip Battin recruited a drummer and attempted to return the band to its roots. Unfortunately, they didn't have the creative drive that the underrated Beland/Guilbeau team had. The musicianship is great, but the 1985 group took a big leap backward. Harris' strained vocals didn't help much either. The sound quality is miles above the very poor "Cabin Fever" CD (which features the same line-up), so, if you're curious, get this one. If you are not familiar with the FBB, don't start with this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Engaging live cd
Ok, lets get this straight: this Relix cd, "Live From Amsterdam 1985" is not a reissue of the 1972 double- lp set "Live In Amsterdam". It is, however, a reissue of the 1986 Relix lp "Live From Europe" but with five songs added. Of course, that cd which is still apparently being made (?) is not the 1990 cd "Encore-Live In Europe". Whew. So now that everything is understood... This is a thoroughly entertaining cd, containing the entire 1985 gig in Amsterdam. The lineup of Greg Harris on guitar and vocals, Sneeky Pete on steel, Skip Battin on bass and vocals and drummer Jim Goodall had also had another live cd from Relix the previous year, "Cabin Fever". This one is more interesting due to a few less obvious selections and a few originals as well. Best of all: the bluegrass instrumental 'Burrito Jam', a fine rendition of Gram Parsons' 'Blue Eyes' and the very best version of the old Burrito classic 'Hot Burrito # 2' ever captured on record. 'Come A little Closer' and a very bizarre rendition of Skip's Byrds classic 'Citizen Kane' also make this cd well worth picking up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flying Burrito Brothers Top Live Pick
This is, without a doubt, the very finest of all the live Burrito releasesavailable. Taken from 1990's killerlineup of John Beland on guitar/vocals,Gib Guilbeau on vocals/fiddle, SneekyPete Kleinow on steel guitar, LarryPatton on bass and Rick Lenow on drums,"Encore" is a spirited and masterfulcollection of past and present classicsperformed by the greatest country-rock band in history by one of their verygreatest lineups. This is, to date, theonly live FBB offering to include thegreat John Beland, which should be reason enough to pick this up. His leadvocal on Dylan's 'You Ain't Going Nowhere' is a particular treat. But it's all great, so make sure you have thisdisc in your collection. ... Read more
