I've Just Begun (Again): This song talks about a simple optimism in our walk with Christ. Even if we run into hard and sad times, we still have hope. We have to "try not to think of things that can't be done" because God can do anything. Sunday's Child: Another great song, the main theme of the song is about meeting the "King of Hearts". Love Divine: A fun song with a simple and loving message, about a "Divine Love" from our Lord. I Will Be There: A song with a beautiful tune and beautiful lyrics. The song is telling about Jesus "will always be there" for you. Where Is My Maker?: The words were taken from the book of Job, when Job cried out "where is my Maker?" The shuffle at the end is really neat, making me want to tap my feet and snap my fingers to the beat. What A Day: "What a day that will be when we go up to heaven" is the theme of the songs. Makes me want to sing along!! If you would like to start collecting Phil Keaggy albums, I suggest you start with this album, then "Time 2". Don't miss out on these great music!!!
Many of Keaggy's classics are present (i.e. Sunday's Child, I will be There, Pilgrim's Flight, etc.). The music has an ELO and Beatles type sound to it, and as usually, Keaggy demonstrates how wonderful a guitar player he actually is. Also, the CD includes several previously unreleased tunes, and live versions of other tunes. Each song on the CD has it's own personality, and in my book this is a good thing, since too many musicians tend to get into a rut and begin to sound the same. Keaggy does not fall into this trap. This is a great CD for the long time Keaggy fan and the new fan alike. I highly recommend it. p.s. the other time CD (part 2) is a good investment as well, check it out.

In 2001, contemporary Christian music (CCM) saw two boy bands come on the scene. Founded by 98 Degrees founder Jonathan Lippman, True Vibe joined Plus One to become the first boy bands CCM had ever seen. With sounds compared to other secular boy bands, both groups quickly rose to the top of the charts. Unlike their counterpart, however, True Vibe went down a slightly different path. From the beginning, True Vibe chose to forego videos for the most part. In addition, their concerts were void of much of the dance moves found in other boy bands. Instead, True Vibe focused on their music and lyrics, seeking to get their message across without all of the pomp and circumstance. The lack of videos and dance moves doesn't seem to have dulled the enthusiasm of their fans. This self-titled debut album quickly introduces you to the harmony that this foursome is capable of producing. From toe-tapping pop-rock songs "Now and Forever" and "Never Again" to smooth flowing ballads "Sweet Jesus" and "You Found Me," True Vibe fires on all cylinders. Like their CCM boy band counterpart, True Vibe is also going through changes. At the time of this review, founder Jonathan Lippman is looking for the final replacement for the group after he and the other three members went their separate ways in mid-2003. While I do not doubt that the new make-up of the group will be just as good as the original, it won't be the same. For that reason alone (though there are many, many other reasons), you should add this debut album to your collection.

Despite my first impression, Skillet's Forefront debut is actually quite good. It sounds very little like any of the others. This is from before the electronic sampling frenzy that gave Hey You it's distinctive edge. Skillet was a novice threesome with a surprisingly tight sound, just beginning to pull together the musical chemistry that makes a band a band. The music has more grunge in it than any of their subsequent work. I Can, Beautiful Robe, Paint, and Promise Blender are tight, edgy guitar tunes, split up by a handful of more upbeat songs. The radio-friendly acoustic single Saturn (included ad infinitum on contemporary compilation albums) and the original worship song Safe With You provide counterpoint to their unpolished rock edge. The penultimate song, Boundaries, opens with a distinctly un-Skillet guitar hook that sounds like it was ripped from a Lenny Kravitz CD before John's rasp takes us to the song's anthemic chorus. Splinter closes the album on a peppy note. For someone just getting into Skillet's music, I would advise starting with either Alien Youth or Hey You, I Love Your Soul before digging back down to their roots. This record is less pulled-together than either of those CDs, though it certainly earns its place alongside (or just above) Invincible and Ardent Worship. The awkwardness of certain filler tracks bumps the album down to a four, but it's a respectable early effort from a powerhouse of underappreciated alterna-rock. Headbang with me. ... Read more

The crystal clear production from John and Dino Elefante, while sometimes a bit bland and processed-sounding, suits their acoustic-guitar-based creations well. On songs like "You Breathe," Alan even begins to sound a bit like John Elefante, while "Simply Beautiful" and "Never See the Day" recall power-popsters like the Posies and the Rembrandts. Altogether, "...and this is how I feel" is a very enjoyable and affecting work. The boys definitely knew what they were doing, and one can only hope that Paul Alan's recent solo debut will continue to shine a light for Christ as brightly as this album does almost 6 years after its release.

The whole second half of the set moves emotionally and musically to the thoughtful The Now and the Not Yet. The "realness" of her voice quality and interpretations come through. Easy to understand why she would soon be doing duets with Peter Cetera, etc.
'Amy says in Ladies Home Journal (December, 1985, p. 100), "I have a healthy sense of right and wrong, but sometimes, for example, using foul, exclamation-point words among friends can be good for a laugh."' Where in the Bible are words like S()H()I()T, A()S()S(), or 'Amy says, "Why isolate yourself? Your life isolates you enough. I'm isolated when I walk into a room and somebody says, She's a Christian and NOBODY OFFERS ME A JOINT and all the coke (cocaine) disappears. . ." (Bob Millard, Amy Grant, (New York, 1986), p. 169)' What Amy means by this statement is that anybody else could walk into the room and BE offered a joint, and the cocaine wouldn't disappear. But she feels isolated, or alienated, because she isn't offered one and people look upon her as the party pooper. 'Husband Gary Chapman confessed in People magazine (July 15, 1991 p. 72), of a six-year cocaine and marijuana addiction!' First of all, that's Gary Chapman, not Amy Grant. Secondly, it could have been before he became a christian. You seem obsessed with digging up dirt. You must want to TOTALLY destroy Grant's legacy or career. 'Amy also says, "I remember years ago - the first time I smelled anybody smoking a joint at a concert, I WAS THRILLED . . . it meant to me that obviously this person is not affected by the church peer pressure."(Bob Millard, Amy Grant, (New York, 1986),p. 30)' She wasn't thrilled because she craved the marijuana. (Great job capitalizing the comment in question) She was thrilled because she feels that the organized church has crossed the line once again and smoking pot is considered a sin. Note the words "Church peer pressure" So there you have it, your case and your attempt to damage Amy Grant's career has been refuted. Go bother Evanescence. Paul ... Read more

If you really want a Christmas cd that "gets" the respect and wonderment of Christmas and yet has fun with the secular party element of the season this is THE cd for you.
I usually think that Amy Grant is almost the ideal singer of Christmas songs, because she has a nice enough voice, but it is also a natural voice, and you can sing along without feeling like she is blowing you away. She sings slow songs like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas" as well as the fast paced holiday rocker "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." I really like the medley of "Joy to the World/For Unto Us a Child Is Born," and the beautiful "Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song)," one of the two songs co-written by Grant. Once again, Grant ends her album with a really old-fashioned hymn, this time Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," as a final reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. Once again, Amy Grant supplies a solid mix of Christmas songs for our holiday listening enjoyment. "Home for Christmas" made it to #2 on the Billboard album chart in 1992 (and #1 on the Top Contemporary Christian chart, of course).
"Breath of Heaven (Mary's Song)", is a song Amy co-wrote with Chris Eaton, and is for me, the highlight of this CD. The words are incredibly moving, and apply not only to Mary as she carried Jesus within, but to motherhood, and every new mother who must feel awe and little fear; " I am waiting in a silent prayer / I am frightened by the load I bear". Amy sings her composition with conviction and passion. It is a perfect song and a perfect performance. Another standout is "I'll be home for Christmas", with a great vocal by Amy, Clare Fischer playing a wonderful jazzy piano, and lush and fabulous strings.

The booklet: Actually, it's not a booklet but instead a square folded in four. However, all the lyrics are listed, even if not very readably. The artists: I saw these guys in concert once in 1999 at the Eastern Maine Teen Convention in Bangor, Maine. While they were a small enough band that the Convention could actually get them to come, they put on a very good performance. They were open and personable on stage, had some cool guitars, and remained cheerful even when showered by handfuls of quarters and bottles of water thrown by an exuberant crowd. After that impressive show I promptly purchased their CD, and while they have since broken up and gone their separate ways, this self-titled album remains a good example of their rolling rock and high energy. In summary: Not deep, but not shallow either. A good middle of the road rock/blues effort by some dedicated little guys.

So 'X 2004' had lots of appeal to me when it came out. Although it doesn't have as many songs as 'X 2003' (34 songs to 18, I wasn't very happy about that), but the music is still great. Some of the slower, or more boring styles of songs from 'X 2003' have been shaved away and the result is an even harder, edgier, and BETTER cd. Even if there aren't as many songs.

Without a doubt, "Destiny," "Ready, Willing and Able," "Dance," "Secret Weapon," and "Sight Unseen" rock with the energy you would expect from Petra. In my opinion, Petra shines best when they play hard and heavy. "Who's on the Lord Side" sounds like gospel on steroids (bluesy, heavy, and hard) while "Hand on My Heart" is quite a soulful pop song. "I Need to Hear from You" is rock/pop at its best with its hooky melody and sing-a-long chorus. "Hey World" provides a thought-provoking yet positive spin on abortion and suicide (positive solutions that is). "In the Likeness of You" is a pretty prayer ballad requesting the Lord to help us be more like Him. All-in-all, this is a very enjoyable mix. If you ever get a chance to watch the accompanying videos, you may enjoy it more.
"Unseen Power" cranks it up a little more on some of the songs, and a little less on the others, but the overall power is there. The band has always had a very beautifully polished sound, and this album is a perfect example of that. Great solo work by Bob Hartman, killer drums by Louis Weaver, slap your face bass by one of the most under-rated bass players of our time, Mr. Ronnie Cates, sweet keys by another monster musician, John Lawry, and finally, the voice that sets the standard for rock artists, John Schlitt are all present and accounted for on this album. The wierdest part of this album is the inclusion of the psuedo-doo-wap song "Hand on my Heart", though if you listen closely, Schlitt's voice starts to really get cranking around the bridge. All of the other tunes rock big time, especially "Destiny", "Ready, Willing and Able", and "Dance". Over-all a phenominal album. Taken into account by itself, without comparing it with "Beyond Belief", that is, this album is a commercial hard-rock masterpiece.
A lot of Petra fans think this album is too heavy, but it actually sounds like the band really mean business & are giving it their all. "Unseen Power" has a real-ness, depth, honesty and out-and-out punch particularly missing from more recent Petra material. A slight change of emphasis & sound from the "This Means War" "On Fire" and "Beyond Belief" albums. Out goes the similarity to Bon Jovi and the "80s hair rock" brigade, enter the pounding, heavy grooves typical of "Destiny," "Dance," "Who's On The Lord's Side," (gospel-meets-metal) and "Ready Willing and Able" (very bouncy but "Quo-phobics" or those allergic to denim or 12-bar rock beware, especially its opening riff!!!) Only joking, this and "Dance" are my favourite Petra songs to date. Other nice touches include much deeper lyrics ("Hey World" talks about abortion & suicide) "I Need To Hear From You" is a guitar-heavy and over-produced ballad, but Petra perform it with real conviction. "In the Likeness of You" is a wonderful closer which departs from this typical 80s & early 90s "power-ballad" feel. Difficult comparison to make between this and "Beyond Belief" -the head says choose "Beyond Belief" but the heart (and head-banging tendencies!) says I prefer "Unseen Power." ... Read more

Grade: B+
While this is not my favorite Petra album or favorite Petra Praise Album (this is their 3rd), it is definitely a GOOD effort! There are a number of REALLY good songs on this one, from the up-tempo (The Noise We Make) to the mid-ranges (Amazing Grace) & the softer ballads (Better Is One Day). While this is one of Petra's 3 "Praise" albums, they are as different sounding as one could imagine. My favorite is still their 1997 release, Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus as it was a TRUE praise & worship album from start to finish. Their first Praise album, Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out, was unheard of at the time (1989) - the blending of traditional praise & worship with the uptempo of contemporary christian music. Starting with I Love The Lord, you knew this album was going to push the boundries, and it did. It had a vast mix of music from the aforementioned song to tradional praise, to the 50's do-op of "Friends, All in the Family of God". This latest release has been coined as a "Modern Worship" album, and that is a title that seems to fit. There is a nice mix of music style in this album (though not to the same degree as Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out). This album may have the better balance of songs musically. There are only a couple of songs which I knew of, the others are new to me. I'm not sure if taking this approach is positive or negative, but I do like the musical treatment given to all of the songs. The only songs that appear lacking are Meet With Me & The Prodigal's Son - they never seem to go anywhere, leaving you with a dry taste in your mouth. The rest of the album is top notch production, though as I mentioned the song selection could have been better. This is their 2nd best praise album & overall is probably in the top 10 of their all-time albums - and when you have 19 studio albums, that is a nice feat. DEFINITELY check it out - you won't regret it! (...)
I do agree with other reviewers that it would have been great to have all of Petra return to the fold for this one. But times change and I give them credit for trying to inject some "newness" into their music but still hold on to the personna we die-hard Petra fans know and love. Let's face it though; we're all growing older. In the opening song, Revival, I did hear a slight aging in John's voice (sorry John), not that it made the song bad or anything. If you like Christian Rock and P&W, this is definitely worth having in your Petra collection. I cannot say it is my favorite Petra CD (and I have just about all of them) but I enjoyed it a lot.
That's not to say this is their best release. Although it is far better than Double Take, it shares some of its faults; songs like "Send Revival" and "How Long" have the same ridiculous production, with Stryper-esque power-ballad vocals screamed out over an acoustic backdrop. Also, the sound lacks originality (aping contemporary bands rather than setting a trend) & some original songs would have been nice, rather than covers. Having said that, these weaknesses can at times be the album's strength - Petra pulls off a convincing impression of Sonic Flood (Oasis, Satisfy, Amazing Grace, Jesus Friend of Sinners.) "The Prodigal's Song" sounds like Delirious on a good day, also being distantly reminiscent of Radiohead. Not forgetting that even though they're all over 50, these guys can still rock out. "The Noise We Make," and "We Want to See Jesus Lifted High" hark back to the band's halcyon days of the late 80s / early 90s. A pity that this approach sounds at odds with the more modern-sounding material, making the album feel slightly schizophrenic. Mostly, the production is top-notch, and there are some class moments ("The Prodigal's Son" is my favourite track, and John Schlitt's vocals still sound as strong as ever (with appropriate production!). Tips for future releases (intended to be constructive, from a long-time fan & fellow musician who appreciates Petra still being around). (1) Don't have one foot in both camps - either get the 80s line-up back together (from This Means War, On Fire, Beyond Belief etc) or change the sound completely. (2) Producers - you have at times done an excellent job with this release, but in future use your ears to judge the sound! ... Read more

Some of the songs, like "God Alone is Enough," are inspired by early Christians. "God Alone..." is attributed to be based on the writing of Teresa of Avila, a Sixteenth Century Spanish nun. Largely, though, the songs are derivations and paraphrasings of Psalms. Any who enjoyed JMT's 1989 double CD "Quiet Side" will find "Simple Heart" to be a perfect transition. After reading Scripture, or while walking, this can help facilitate meditation and focus on God. When grieving a loss in my life, I found in "Simple Heart," and in "Quiet Side" great solace and a reminder of the goodness and faithfulness of God. It is good rest. This isn't easy listening or light new age, nor is it background music. Despite the peaceful nature of JMT's voice and style, I believe it was produced to be interactive, to provide spiritual direction. I fully recommend "Simple Heart" by John Michael Talbot. Companion books worth reading with a similar tone are those by Henri Nouwen, Richard J Foster, Brennan Manning and Oswald Chambers. Anthony Trendl
