Of course the title song was included, probably his best known song but a convicting song of commitment. But the songs range in style from ballad ("My Place is with You") to adult contemporary ("Midnight Cry") and light pop ("His Love's Comin' Over Me"). Then there are the fun songs "Saving the World" and "I Call Your Name." Yet Clay manages to handle each new style with ease. Unfortunately, Clay has a small following for such a big talent. Don't be left out. Get this collection and enjoy his rich vocals and some great songs.

The pros now...this CD has about seven good songs of the 21, some of the real fast stuff like Weak, Another Song About TV, The Aspect, and Dead End make this worth some downloads, but in general, the CD is either slow of the riffs are too corny and end up hurting my ears. But I do have to wonder...why did they lose Andy? They need that guy back. With this CD and his sound, the CD has really bad recording, and I like that. I would still hardly call this punk...this is punk for babies, just coming out of the mainstream. I was there once, I used to like those dorky bands like Limp Bizkit and Korn, and this was one of the first bands I started listening to out of mainstream. Unfortuneately, the mellowness got to me too much and I stopped liking them, but I have moved deeper into punk. Go for stuff like Bad Religion, Black Flag, and Propaghandi for true punk. Please people...

This was the album that finally brought this pioneering Christian rock band to a level of musical and lyrical sophistication that could compete with the best of the secular rock bands. Many listeners will be familiar with some of these songs from later hits compilations such as "Rock Block," but you should really get the original album to hear the songs in context with lesser-known songs. "The Coloring Song" opens the album with a beautiful and poetic devotion, which makes allusions and allegories inspired by colors. The vocals, organ, acoustic guitar, and mixolydian mode give the song a refreshing, folklike flavor. The next two tracks "Chameleon" and "Angel of Light" showcase some outstanding electric guitar work and fierce vocal performances by Greg X Volz, whose voice has a more gospel / soul orientation than his successor John Schlitt, who has more of a hard-rock voice. "Killing My Old Man" was a controversial song because on the surface, many people took it as a horrible ode to patricide (instead of a song about the biblical admonition to crucify our old selves), and Petra's label actually didn't let them release this song for a few albums. It's a catchy tune. "Without Him We can do Nothing" closes out side one with a powerful, rocking praise number. Exhortation at its best. Side 2 is a little weaker than Side 1. "I Can Be Friends with You," and "Father of Lights" are okay, but nothing special. The same could be said of the title cut, although its lyrics are very encouraging and positive, and the guitar hook is admirable. "[Too Late] For Annie" is a well-known song about a girl who commits suicide because she feels that nobody cares (the message being that Christians could have told her that Jesus loves her, cares for her, etc., and her untimely death could have been averted.) Whether or not people liked the song or its message, it challenged listeners- and with unsentimental realism- in a way that CCM had seldom done before or since. "Praise Ye the Lord" closes out the side with the same rock-solid praise of "Without Him We Can Do Nothing." I heartily recommend this album to any fan of Petra (or Kansas, or 70s progressive rock for that matter). You'll enjoy it. ... Read more

This is stunning record, often bettering Brian Wilson's originals. For example, the shiny power-pop rendition of "I Know There's An Answer" from Pet Sounds, melding the unused "Hang On To Your Ego" lyrics, is absolutely joyous. Aaron Sprinkle -- practically a one-man producer/band, nails the song, making it contemporary and yet still respectful to the original. And this is how it goes throughout the 17 tracks included here. Phil Keaggy absolutely nails "Good Vibrations", and while it doesn't veer from the original formula, he meets the challenge of a daunting song well. Kate Campbell does a beautiful folk-country rendition of "Add Some Music To Your Day." And while there's not a single surfing song here, there's much from Pet Sounds and the late 60's/early 70's Beach Boys records, as well as covers of three songs from Brian Wilson's solo records, and frankly, these versions -- by folkie Tom Prasada-Rao ("Your Imagination"), Christian music's Randy Stonehill ("Love and Mercy"), and folk-pop singer-songwriter Jane Kelly Williams ("Lay Down Burden") -- are (dare I say it??) superior to Wilson's own renditions. And I must say that D.C. Talk's Kevin Max (in arguably the most creative interpretation) brings U2 to "Help Me Rhonda!" Can you imagine? No, you can't, but believe me, it works. The producers even toss in a campy version of the silly "Vegetables" from the aborted "Smile" album for hard-core fans (though that's one I generally skip over). From power-pop to folk-pop there's a beautiful consistency to this record. Bottom line: If you are a purist who cannot abide the Beach Boy originals being tampered with, go buy Beach Boys Classics because you won't be able to tolerate this record or any tribute for that matter. But if you want to hear a contemporary album that demontrates the continuing vitality of these songs in a new era, get this record. You'll be glad you did. The packaging, the 24 page color booklet with loving tributes to Brian Wilson by the artists, and the beautiful cover (inspired, of course, by the original Smile cover), are icing on the cake. This is my pick for the album of the Summer of 2002! ... Read more

1. "Lies of Serpents..." - pretty good opener, nice riffs but a little short.. 2. "To Think of You..." - a heartfelt and actually somewhat beautiful lament over a friends death, really melodic guitars and a great chorus even though some of the riffs seemed a little erratic 3. "A Fall Farewell" - another song about a dead friend.... heavy, insance vocals as usual, one of my favorites 4. "March" - this track pretty much just plods along with a few slow riffs and extremely religious lyrics, should have been shorter 5. "Ember" - another favorite, a few fast catchy riffs and some nice melodic leads...a little short 6. "Ravage Ritual" - weird voice-over intro, the song isn't bad but the lyrics are just so preachy its hard to enjoy it 7. "Fifteen Rhema" - an ok track but it seems a little standard for zao, the riffs sound almost random sometimes 8. "For a Fair Desire" - some great leads and rhythm guitars, one of the album's better tracks 9. "The Latter Rain" - beginning is a little slow but it picks up...an ok track 10. "Violet" - a pretty instrumental piano track but still a little pointless, and it doesn't really fit with the rest of the cd Overall not a bad cd, standout tracks are "Lies of Serpents A River of Tears", "A Fall Farewell" and "To Think of You is to Treasure an Absent Memory"

"You" is the first The Kry CD I purchased even though it is the second studio effort by the band.In my opinion, it also is the most "radio friendly" collection of songs. The first CD ("I'll Find You There") featured more aggressive guitar work and up-tempo songs while this one toned down the edge and speed somewhat. You will hear a little more piano and strings, but fear not, The Kry still rock on this album The strength of this CD rests on the hearts and the integrity of the band. The lyrics are honest and pure in motive. The music flows with pop melodies that are easy to sing along with while listening.I find myself wondering why I do not hear more of their songs on the radio. As with all "The Kry" CD's, this one blends a good mixture of rock tunes, acustic pop, and stirring ballads. It is possible you will like what you are hearing during the first listen.

If you are a die-hard PfR Fan, this is a must have. If you haven't heard them before and want to get an idea what their music sounds like, at least listen to a demo of this disc. Also consider their other 4 wonderful projects. Joel, Pat, Mark, if you guys are reading this, Thanks for your last concert in Brainerd. It meant a lot! We love you guys! God bless.
While some songs, like Name and Pour Me Out just plain rock, others, like The Love I Know, Wait For The Sun, and Forever are beautiful in both lyrics and song. Many have shared stories of going through a hard time in relationships, then only to hear The Love I Know. The lyrics can be powerful. The Music is varied from Hard Rock to country (the last song, not listed on CD). And It closes with the retrospect, Fare Thee Well. Of the 17 tracks, 3 are new. 2 are from Pray For Rain (1992), 5 are from Goldie's Last Day (1994), 4 are from Great Lengths (1995), and 2 are from Them (1996).

Mid seventies was the year of break through for canadian group Prism, offering the seeds of their sound: A mixture of hard-prog-pop (with Horn gimmicks from time to time). A repetitive formula that began to grow in 1978 with See Forever Eyes, and reached the peak of its maturity with the album Armageddon in 1979. In 1977, Prism was formed by Ron Tabak(RIP)/Lead vocals; Lindsay Mitchell/Lead Guitar & vocals; Tom Lavin/ Rhythm guitar & vocals; John Hall/Keyboards & vocals; Ab Bryant/Bass; Rodney Higgs/Drums & keyboards; and Prism hornisection was Tom Keenlyside & Bruce Fairbairn(RIP). All songs were composed by Rodney Higgs who helped to create the music formula; just I Ain't Looking Anymore was composed by Lindsay Mitchell and Freewill by T. Lavin. This record shows a lack of creativity, maybe by the presence of Higgs, Lavin, Bryant who walked out for the See Forever Eyes Album. Aparently after this, the rest of the group had enough freedom to develop the music style of the band. The Top songs of this album are: Spaceship Superstar, Open Soul Surgery, It's Over, Vladivostok and I Ain't Looking Anymore. A weak stand for a Rock but a good beginning for a Roll...a recommended album for any kind of Rock listeners. Outside there, I ain't looking anymore to tell...Good luck! ... Read more

"Call Me Christian" sets the tone for the album much like "Prophet, Priest, and King" did for the debut CD. Other strong songs on "Listen Closely" include "Anything Genuine," "Gloria," and "Hold it up to The Light" (just to name three). For those of you who know a little music trivia, "Call Me Christian" has been released before from a little known band named Villanelle. In fact, if you ever get your hands on Villanelle's "Orange Peels and Pinwheels" CD, check and see how many members of that band found their way into Smalltown Poets. You may also notice that Villanelle associated closely with The Waiting on their "Blue Belly Sky" project (check on the back of the CD flyer where it says, "Much Love and Gratitude"). Okay, let's get back on the subject here. I, for one, am glad to see the Smalltown Poets continue to release music. They are definitely one of the best pop/rock bands around right now.

My initial impression upon buying this CD was one of disappointment, because the music was just so different sounding than Take Me To Your Leader. Leader was a bit more "edgy" and hard rock sounding, whereas Step Up To The Microphone introduces new sounds into the songs, like (gasp!) stringed instruments(!). This turned out to be not such a bad thing afterall, as it gave the Newsboys more range in their sound and undoubtedly helped to increase their status as one of contemporary Christian music's premier bands. In fact, they seem to be enjoying taking their music into new directions like this (think Love Liberty Disco, and Adoration), and their popularity just keeps growing and growing because of it. Ultimately, Shine: The Hits has gone on to be my favorite CD of all time, even in light of the Newsboys' most recent releases like Thrive and Adoration. Maybe the next greatest hits CD will vie for the top spot in my heart, but for now it's all about Shine...

MWS' The Big Picture is one to stand out as one among of such albums. Its emphasis on truthful radicalism is reflected in the bomshell of musical format that it carries. The music rocks; and although the production may not be as equal to the quality found in todays releases due to the aboundance of great technology and the possibilties that it have made possible thereof, this album is quite excellent considering what still-limited technology is only available at the time of this album's recording. The track "Pursuit of the Dream" (perhaps the only passable song found here melodical-wise), which serves as the one to carry thematically the album title - is about one's christian goal to advance in the world that is lived in; whilst "Rocketown", a track that depicts an allegorical story of Christ visiting a small town as an alien from another planet... is one of christian rock's finest moment. The track is comparably equivalent to the likes of YES' Space-Rock ballad "Onward" (from the TORMATO album) and SUPERTRAMP's "Dreamer" (from their 1974 epic release CRIME OF THE CENTURY). Truly a XtianRock Classic. Like among the number of other reviewers - this album also have served to influence me a great deal during in those stage of being an easy-pikens as a young christian in a world that could easily ensnare with its deceit and pretensions. The intermission track "Tearing Down The Wall" is a good musical piece including the outro-hidden piano track by the LP's end as well (my well-worn and old tape copy is a half lenght much longer about this part - dunno about the cd). Along those albums that leveled similarly with Michael W. Smith's THE BIG PICTURE - also there's DAVE PERKINS' The Innoscence; AD's Art Of The State; BOB AYALA's Rescued; Mark Heard's IDEOLA album called Tribal Opera; PETRA's classic More Power To Ya and its worthy follow up Not Of This World; and those of Steve Taylor's releases are remarkable as well- including his work with the NEWSBOYS; plus for the most current, it's only Rebecca St James' grammy winning cd Pray that i have found evidently to have equally emulate such similar kind of integrity in christian music. May Xtian Rock arise again to unfold such music as these before the second coming arrives. Peace.

Lift caught me completely off guard. The lyrics, in classic Audio A style, were strong and meaningful. I guess the only gripes are just personal things. I like their new sound but its a little too slow for me. It reminds me of bar-room musicians playing at the end of happy hour (no, I've never sat through happy hour but my dad used to play in bars and I've seen alot of musicians with the same style play)...It has all the resonances of a little rhythm and blues with some 80s vocal backups and some strong synthesizer intonations. Its groovy, if thats your style....Personally, I'm the underdog type: hit it fast and leave'em screaming... If you like strong lyrics with an 80s sound, with a slow melodic pace, this is the CD for you. I liked songs like Ocean Floor, Rejoice, Lift, and Tremble...They were all good but those were the ones I liked in particular. You have nothing to lose by buying this very cool CD, and I'm sure everyone will find something they like in it.
One wonders what would happen after two 5 star albums, then two 4 star albums. Which way will it break with the next album? The next album is WORLDWIDE, and in my opinion, it is one of the great albums of any genre. Oddly enough, the best song on LIFT is also on WORLDWIDE.. Ocean Floor. There is a lot to like about LIFT, but the must have albums are, in order of importance to me: HIT PARADE, WORLDWIDE, BLOOM and SOME KIND OF ZOMBIE. Music is food for the soul. Great Christian music from Audio Adrenalin is a huge feast for the soul because, in my opinion all their albums are 3 star or better, except one -the self titled one released in 1995.
You Still Amaze Me (3/5)-This song is not their best work but is an excellent beginning to Lift. I'm Alive (4/5)- I'm Alive starts to get a little bit faster and is a great song if your looking for an uplift. Beautiful (5-5)- Definently one of my favorite songs and what i would consider a wonderful ballad to the Lord. Ocean Floor (6/5)- Nuff' said. Rejoice (4/5)- A good fast song with a chorus that is fast and pleasing to the ear, though you might miss the bet part if you don't listen intently. Speak to Me (5/5)- Another of my favorites. One of the slowest songs on the CD but the honesty of the words and the harmonies are incredible. Glory (3/5)- I hate saying any song is a filler but i didn't like this song a whole lot. It's fast but it doesn't have any big meaning. Summertime (3.5/5)- A very fun song with surprisingly childlike lyrics for such a hard song. This is everything (5-5)- This song is alot like Speak to Me but with a little faster pace and it addresses a different issue, giving yourself to God. Lift (4/5)- Not quite the quality i would expect from the title track but all and all a very good song. Tremble (3/5)- Not a very good song. It's way too long and the words probably have more of an inside meaning from the band than what could be interpreted by a normal listener. Beautiful (Radio Remix) (5/5)- Basically the same as its counterpart but with more of an acoustic sound. Lonely Man (2/5)- The hardest and worst song on the CD. Don't get me wrong, I like hard music but the chorus is way to short and choppy and this isn't the best Christian song. I hope you found this review helpful and happy shopping!

The lyrics are definitely deep and thought- provoking, but the music just doesn't sound very good, almost like a Christian version of No Doubt (Think "I'm Just a Girl" and "Spiderweb"). Tiffany Arbuckle has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. Unfortunately, on this CD the instrumentation (which sounds very amateurish)almost drowns out her harmonies completely. Don't get me wrong. I think Plumb is awesome. I just can't believe how bad this CD sounds compared to their second one. Do yourself a favor and spend your money on Candycoatedwaterdrops. It's a million times better.
As for this remarkable debut, I remember walking into the music store, and the guy who worked there said to me, "Hey! we just got a shipment of new cds...check this one out! It sounds a little like Garbage." (That's the BAND Garbage...) Anyways, I listened to it, and at first, I HATED it. Probably because I was expecting, well, Shirley Manson-esque vocals, with a techno/electronica flair. But after I listened to the entire cd, I ended up buying it. Plumb is not Garbage. such a comparison would be unfair. They're both genius in their own right. Plumb's debut comes off somewhat aggressive, but it's a UNIQUE aggressive. I don't think I've ever heard such power in such meek sounding vocals. While I DO love this debut from Plumb, there are a couple songs that seem...unpolished. For example, The Cure. In my own personal opinion, it's repetitive. This release is marked by trademark drum loops...and it's the same loop in like four songs. The Cure is also somewhat annoying. Also, Pennyless seems to drone on, never really allowing the listener's ear to quite adjust. But that's just me. Personally, I think Plumb does a kick butt job being aggressive. I think her best songs are Sobering, Concrete, Unforgivable, and Crazy. She's inspired me so much that's it's ubelievable. There you have it. My little rant on how great Plumbs debut is. Go out and get it!
I am not a teenage girl, so I can't tell if these lyrics will send girls into the abyss or pull them away from the edge of it. As I said, musically there are 5 interesting songs, but I don't see anyone getting lifted up with any of this music. As a parent, I would say check out the lyrics at your favorite lyric website before buying. Make sure they are OK. I bought this based on a recommendation for my 11 year old daughter, but did not give it to her.

The next two songs aren't exactly Christmas tunes but they're very nice to listen to if you feel the need to relax or to rewind from the stresses that Christmas sometimes generates while trying to manage your money while shopping! I especially enjoy the Fluffy Sav Mix of "Blind", which I would recommend buying if it was a song by itself! And then there's "Wicker Baskets" which is a short, mellow instrumental that closes the album with calm acoustics.
Both CDs have the extraordinary rendition of "The Little Drummer Boy" and a great instrumental "Wicker Baskets". I enjoy both songs immensely. "The Little Drummer Boy" is just done beautifully by Jars of Clay. It is awe-inspiring. The vocals are really superb and the music is incredible. "Wicker Baskets" is also a nice soothing song of reflection. Regarding this CD's songs, the remix of "Drummer Boy" is good as well. I enjoyed the original more but the remix does add some "spice" to the song with some great effects. I personally didn't like the "Blind" remix too much though. It isn't all bad but it didn't seem like it belonged on the CD. Now the original release of this CD had an excellent version of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" on it. The song had exceptional guitar work on it. Then there is the song that I think is the best out of both releases. "He" (acoustic) is just beautiful. It sounds magnificent and is very emotional and touching. Both releases are great and should be added to your personal CD library but if you can try and get the first release. I personally own both and enjoy them both very much.

"Let me tell you about my voice. It's big and loud or tiny and soft. It comes from several places in my body and being, and I truly love it" is what Melanie wrote for the back cover of the CD case. And it's so true. Her voice is all that and more, Melanie's voice is as incredible as ever. The songs vary from soft and slow to loud and faster - one more beautiful than the one before -- or just as wonderful? Melanie speaks to us, the listeners on track 12 followed by the wonderful song that this CD is named after -- CRAZY LOVE. I have to say this is my favorite song on this CD. The last song is, 30 years later, a brand new version of BRAND NEW KEY. In the little booklet that accompanies the CD, Melanie writes about this song and her problems with it. This new version is just as wonderful as the original. This song as well as many others has a few explanatory words and it's fun to read them as you listen to the music. Melanie allows us into her world for a while and through her words it's easy to feel welcome there. All in all I would definitely consider this a MUST HAVE for any and all Melanie Safka fans. Sidenote: On the CD cover it shows melaniesafka.info as a website address, however, I received an error message trying to go there. Instead you can find her official site at www.crazyloveonline.com
